We love to feature local people. Meet Kayti Dyson…

Poets Person: Kayti Dyson Kayti Dyson lives in Wordsworth Street and has recently opened Grey Door Therapy Clinic at 36 Blatchington Road (first floor) with her mum, Teena Campion-Smith. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I have lived in Hove for 15 years with my husband Peter. We moved to Wordsworth Street in May 2007. It was a wreck of a house, no heating, smelly kitchen, dirty and unkept. You couldn’t get in the back garden it was so overgrown. It’s quite different now but it’s taken us ages to do! We live there with our two children Ruby, Will and Huey our miniature dachshund! What do you most like about the area? I love Hove. I love the people, friends we’ve made, the independent shops, the pubs, great places to eat, the sea, even the sound of the seagulls! Everything is on our doorstep. I suppose it’s not what I like the most as I really love it all. Brighton and Hove is unique.

Kayti Dyson

What changes would you like to see? I would like to see more people picking up their dogs’ poop! I don’t love that. Tell us more about the clinic... Grey door therapy clinic is owned and run by my mother and I. Teena is a psychotherapist and I am a beauty therapist. We have many years’ experience and wanted to create a unique space for us and other therapists to work. The clinic itself is very homely, spacious and peaceful, not at all stark or sterile. We have ‘altered’ quite a few of the furniture pieces (very Hove!), even the art work on our walls by Amy Dury is made with vintage materials and paper. We all need a little help from time to time and well-being comes in many forms. Feeling good about yourself can be as quick as a leg wax or an organic facial, or maybe more like a talking therapy. We have a number of other wonderful practitioners offering a variety of therapies....body talk, counselling, cranial sacral therapy, life coaching, mindfulness courses, nutrition, physiotherapy, psychosexual therapy, reflexology, osteopathy. Our website www.greydoortherapy.co.uk has lots more details about our practitioners and what’s available. We hope at grey door we can help you find what you are looking for, making you feel good about yourself inside and out! What is your top beauty tip? There’s loads, I could go on and on, but if I have to go with one, my top beauty tip is clean your skin... properly...every night. Cleanse your skin and steer clear of facial wipes!

Portland Hotel The Portland Hotel, in 1911. Portland Road is comparatively modern, only the eastern portion dating from the last century. In the 1880s, that portion from Sackville Road to the Aldrington boundary was called Clarendon Villas Road and the few houses west of the boundary, Bertram Road. It was renamed after the Duke of Portland, who owned the land, in 1895, and the Portland Hotel was erected in 1896. This was rebuilt in its present form in 1928 and is now The Stoneham pub. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. Meet the man in charge of your local PCSOs...

Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Paul Ransome How long have you been with Sussex Police? This is my 20th year as a Sussex police officer. I have served in most parts of the county and came to Brighton four years ago. I am in charge of Hove and East Brighton Neighbourhood Policing Teams which consist of supervisors and a number of Police Community Support Officers who are responsible for your area. What is the best part of your job? Quite simply, the people. I have been lucky enough to work with some excellent officers and police staff over my career. You need a sense of humour to do this job and an ability to deal with almost anything. I have met some superb examples of public spirited people over the years too and continue to do so within my role in Brighton. I have also met a number of non-public spirited people who continue to impact on the lives of others; my job is to stop them.

What are the challenges that you face? Policing has changed and in order for us to look after the public we must change with it. Police and the public can all remember ‘the good old days’ or were they? We must prioritise our work based on threat, harm, risk and vulnerability and can’t continue to do the ‘nice to do’ things. We have to get the most out of every officer and work efficiently to ensure we make a difference to people’s lives and keep them safe. We cannot always get it right but we should do what is important well. What are your interests outside work? Sadly my football career is coming to an end and I have recently taken up football refereeing. I am kicking myself for waiting so long as I thoroughly enjoy it. How can we help you in your work? This is the really important bit; the simple answer is support us by calling in suspicious activity or provide evidence so that we can deal properly with suspects and offenders. I am a big believer in positive action whether via diversion schemes or court, but I am frustrated when we don’t have the evidence to prosecute. Please help us to make Brighton a better place to live and work. How can we contact you? Sussex Police can be contacted on 101 (non emergency) or 999 (emergency) or visit www.sussex.police.uk to report incidents on-line. I can be contacted via email : Paul.ransome@sussex.pnn.police.uk

Take part in deciding what happens with Hove library…

Have Your Say on Hove Library If you haven’t yet had your say on the proposal to move Hove Library into Hove Museum, the public consultation on the city’s library services is open until 16th February. The current library in Church Road is a Grade 2 listed building which is expensive to run and is in need of £0.75 million repairs over the next five years. Brighton & Hove’s library service also needs to save £1.34 million in the next four years as a result of reductions in funding HOVE MUSEUM & LIBRARY to local councils from central government.

A proposed north-east aerial view of Hove Museum & Library Aerial View (North / East) - As Proposed

The proposal is to sell the current library building and create a new community cultural centre for Hove, bringing together library and museum services on the site of the current museum in New Church Road. The publicly accessible space on the ground floor of the museum would be doubled, with the old extension being replaced by a new purpose-built extension. The museum galleries on the first floor would remain. The library space would be about 15% smaller than at the current Hove Library.

The libraries consultation also asks for people’s views on

changing the way library services are delivered across the city. The changes include opening up access to libraries seven days a week, with a mix of staffed and unstaffed days. The final decisions will be taken in March, by the Economic Development and Culture Committee. You can take part in the consultation at: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/library-services-survey. Alternatively, you can complete a paper survey at the library.

Here we feature local business, Dream Doors...

A New Kitchen for the Spring What could be nicer than a new kitchen for the spring! Improving the home is a priority for many of us at this time of year, but installing a kitchen from scratch is not for the faint-hearted! The work can be disruptive, messy and inconvenient, involving a range of workmen including carpenters, tilers, plumbers, plasterers and electricians. Because of the number of people involved in a full kitchen renovation, budgets can easily go awry and if the estimates are to be believed almost one quarter of kitchen installations go over budget. One way to minimise costs is to opt for a kitchen refresh as opposed to a full refurbishment. Updating cupboard doors, worktops and fixtures and fittings minimises the work required, and a company like Dream Doors will cost out and arrange all the elements of the job including the workmen, in advance, so budgets are all agreed up front. Dream Doors offer a huge range of door styles and colours, made from the best available materials and fully

guaranteed. Worktops can be replaced or overlaid onto existing tops, again reducing mess and disruption. To help you get exactly what you need, Dream Doors designers ask our clients to consider fundamental questions including: •

Why do you need a new kitchen?

What do you like about your current kitchen?

What do you dislike about your current kitchen?

What preference do you have for the look and feel of your new kitchen?

What are your storage needs?

Apart from cooking, will you use your kitchen for anything else?

With this information Dream Doors can provide a quotation perfect for your needs. A brochure is available on our website or you can call or visit our showroom in Boundary Road, Hove.

Logs can be cut to other sizes, from 4" to 15". We can deliver any quantity from 1/4 cubic metre upwards. Please contact us for these prices, as they vary slightly from our standard price above.

Advice from local physiotherapist Martina Bisping..

Focus On Physiotherapy How To Make Good Use Of The Last Four Weeks Before The Brighton Half Marathon Don’t ignore lingering niggles or just put up with muscle tightness. • If the IT (illiotibial) band in the outside of your thigh is too tight, this could cause knee pain and so you should massage it with a foam roller and stretch it. • Treat tight and short calves, hip flexors, hamstrings and quadriceps with self-massage and stretching. • If you experience severe pain whilst running, rest for 2-3 days and seek help if you are not improving. • Keep up your strengthening exercises for your trunk muscles. • Whatever core exercises you’re doing, keep doing them. • Remember that strong core and hip muscles will help prevent lower limb running injuries and help you maintain pace.

Don’t over-train: • At least two weeks before the race, do the longest run of your training programme (9-11 miles for a first timer, about 13-16 miles for a seasoned runner) and then wind your training down to ensure you are rested and fully recovered by race day. • In the coming weeks you might also think about replacing some of your running units with cross-training if your legs don’t recover well. A cross trainer in a gym works fine but some people prefer swimming, as swimming gives the joints a complete rest from the pounding of intensive running.

Brighton Science Festival 2nd-28th February 2016 In Brighton & Hove, we do science with style. The festival returns for one month of interactive workshops, events and talks, across the city. Programme robots, blow square bubbles, decide your own personal evolution plan, cycle across the solar system, and witness the battle of the cephalopods, meet up, eat up, play with your food, go home, sleep, wake, repeat. It’s like that all month. Highlights include the: • Big Science Weekend (27–28 Feb) for adults •

Bright Sparks (13–14 Feb) for kids

Hands-On Half-term (15–21 Feb) for young adults.

(at Hove Park School)

The theme for the 2016 festival is Journeys. Find out more and buy tickets at: www.BrightonScience.com
