We trust you had a lovely Christmas and we would like to wish you all a very happy and prosperous New Year! Due to printers being closed over Christmas, I am actually wishing you that well before the festivities have even started so it does feel a little strange. That said, New Year is a great time to reflect on the year just gone and make plans for the up-and-coming 12 months, so write down where you want to be this time next year and stick it to the fridge and see how close you can get! In the meantime we have no radical changes to the magazine this month, just the usual mix of local items. We are however formulating plans to freshen the publication up this year both in terms of how it looks as well as content. If you get this edition through your door before New Year’s Eve, have a great celebration; if you get it afterwards we hope you have recovered! Here’s to a great 2015!! News from the latest meeting of the West Hove Forum

Healthy Neighbourhood Fund Grants Still Available The West Hove Forum has recently allocated grants to several local groups. The Secret Garden Group were given £500, as were the Wish Park Residents Association for their vegetable garden, and Plot 22, who host activities on an allotment site in Weald Avenue. The Ingram Crescent Disability Christmas Party was granted £285. There is still £1,515 in the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund kitty. If you belong to a small community group which is based in the West Hove area and has health and wellbeing benefits for local people, you can apply for a grant. The funding criteria include: • Improving diet and nutrition and help to reduce obesity; • Increasing exercise; • Improving mental health. For an application form, please email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com . The deadline for completed applications is 14th January 2015. At our last meeting in the Salvation Army Hall in Sackville Road, the police reported that there had been an increase in vehicle crime around Wish. Due to a resident’s diligence, however, two people were arrested who were suspected to be connected with the increase in vehicle crime in October. Since then, vehicle crime has dropped. Cllr Anne Pissaridou asked whether there was anything the police could do about the large number of cars for sale on Portland Road. PCSO Darren Penter said that, unfortunately, as the vehicles all have different registered owners and the mobile phone numbers on the cars are all different, there’s not much the police can do at this time. Trading Standards are now looking into it. Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn was concerned that paper tax discs are no longer in use, as this was in the past a very good guide for residents to see if a car was taxed. PCSO

The Garden Retreat at Plot 22

Penter said that anyone can check the Government website to see whether a vehicle is taxed: https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax. Robert Nemeth (Treasurer of the Secret Garden Group) even tested this out for himself during the meeting by checking on his mobile phone that Garry’s car was taxed! (It is.) The following new community policing priorities were set for the West Hove area: 1. Anti-social behaviour in Boundary Road 2. Burglary 3. Cycle safety. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be on 21st January 2015 (venue and time to be confirmed). If you would like to attend on behalf of a residents’ association, business or other organisation, email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com or phone the Chair, Ron Gurney, on 01273 385361.

We love to feature Poets’ Corner based businesses...

Your Local Poets’ Corner Carpenter A proud Brightonian (born and bred!), Darren has always lived in Brighton and Hove and is now settled in Poets’ Corner and loves the friendly community that it is. He is delighted to be part of such a close-knit neighbourhood and keen to help with any carpentry needs. With over 30 years’ experience, he knows his way around all types of carpentry and can offer expert advice and craftsmanship. He specialises in bespoke shelving and cabinets, fitted wardrobes, kitchen and bathroom fitting, flooring, decking, sash window repairs and general carpentry such as door hanging, skirting etc. He also undertakes external works and property maintenance. He has a wide range of contacts with other trades such as electrical, plumbing, plastering and decorating. Working closely with these trades he can offer a total package of works with full planning, co-ordination and project management, providing a one-stop shop for your project. As well as being local, he is friendly, reliable, trustworthy and most importantly clean and tidy! He also has excellent attention to detail.

Darren is City and Guilds qualified and worked for a reputable Brighton building company for 12 years before he decided to branch out on his own, and he has never looked back! Testimonials “I own a property in London which I rent out and needed some work doing, so asked Darren if he would be happy to take on the project (as it’s not always easy to find reliable tradesmen up there) and he was only too willing. He did all the exterior decorations, rendering and external carpentry work and hugely smartened up the outside of the property. Brilliant job!” Miss Cooper, Brighton “Darren put a new kitchen, a pair of French doors leading out to the garden and decking in my terraced house in Poets’ Corner and both the kitchen and garden have been transformed. I was very impressed with his workmanship and he was also excellent at providing me with regular updates on progress. I would definitely recommend him.” Mrs Wells, Hove “We are delighted with the decking Darren built for us. It transformed our garden from an unkempt area into a superb outdoor living space. He did a fantastic job and, as well as his excellent carpentry skills, he is reliable, friendly and efficient; we can’t recommend him highly enough!” Mr and Mrs Key, Shoreham

The third in a series of recipes for children...

CookeryDoodleDoo recipe Jess is a teacher from Cookery Doodle Doo, who organise children’s cookery classes and parties across the UK. With lessons on everything from edible Flowerpot Cheesecakes to healthy homecooked meals, there is always a fun new activity for the children to get stuck into. Jess runs preschool and afterschool classes at Pelican on Portland, a great new café on the Portland Road. The classes are suitable for fussy eaters and messy bakers alike and after preparing the food, parents get a chance to relax in the café as the food cooks and the children use the playroom. Preschool classes (ages 2½ to 4) run on Mondays from 10-11.30am and 1-2.30pm, Tuesdays 10-11.30am. Classes are £7 per child or £12 for two siblings, including a recipe card to take away. Reductions apply for people who book a half term course. Afterschool club (age 3-10; school-aged children can be left during the food preparation) runs on Mondays from 3.30-5pm.

Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

Say ‘No!’ to January Detox This may sound surprising coming from me but here it is: if you’re ever advised by anyone to get into a full-on liver detox this time of year, run for your life. Winter is a time for conserving energy and eating nurturing, comforting, warming foods, not for putting your liver into 6th gear by trying to push all those toxins out. This will exhaust and deplete you and that ‘cleaner’ and lighter feeling you expected from your detox may never happen. Spring is the best time for detoxing, when your liver is ready to expel those nasty toxins you’ve been accumulating all winter. So for now, just try and limit the toxic load by eating and drinking in moderation (more on that in your next issue). But I won’t leave you stranded on your toxic island with no lifeline. Here’s a recipe for a bloat-blasting tonic you can have when feeling like your digestive fire’s out: Ginger Zing: Squeeze ½ cup of lemon juice, add 1 tsp of turmeric powder and soak 10-15 thin slices of fresh ginger in the mixture for half an hour. Chew on a piece

of soaked ginger 15 minutes before a meal (watch out for the bite on this one!). Keeps in the fridge in a glass jar for 5 days. If this recipe has too much ‘zing’, simply try adding a tablespoon or two of apple cider vinegar to a mug of warm water and sip slowly before a meal. Great for these indulgent days when moderation and detox are far from your mind…! Happy Healthy Year to you all! Read about a new group to help you be creative...

Kickstart Your Creativity comes to the Hive this February Using our creativity adds to our well-being and boosts confidence, yet many of us don’t consider ourselves creative. In 1968 NASA gave a test, used to select engineers and scientists, to 1,600 five-year-olds. They retested the same children at age 10 and 15. The test results showed that 98% of five-year-olds achieved creative genius level. This dropped to 30% at 10 years and 12% at 15 years. The same test given to 280,000 adults placed their genius level creativity at only 2%. The conclusion was obvious. Non-creative behaviour is learnt rather than natural. At Kickstart, we can’t promise to make you into a creative genius, (though we’ll try), but we can help you make changes and put ideas into action. Our small supportive groups inspire and energise your thinking, and enable you to be more confident about your creative abilities. Whether you would like to make changes to your life, begin something new, or simply explore a more creative way to live your life, Kickstart will get you started.Taster Session runs on Saturday February 7th 10am-1pm at the Hive. For more information email createlearnconnect@gmail.comwww. createlearnconnect.comThree creative Kickstarts:See the world differently - take a different path, cross the

road, slow down, notice the world around you, the details: textures, shapes, colours, smells.Make a list of all the things you did as a child/young person that you loved to do and don’t do any more. Make time to do one.Bake something with an ingredient you’ve never used before.

21 Here is a local service that allows elderly people to stay living in their own homes...

RMBI Barford Court Day Service At the RMBI Barford Court Day Service we offer local older people who want to remain living in their own homes the opportunity to access support and a wide variety of stimulating activities. There is also the chance to meet other local people, to relax, enjoy meals and maintain current living skills. There is no typical day as staff tailor activities to suit those present, involving you in the decision making, incorporating existing skills into the daily programme and introducing new ones if people are comfortable doing so. Activities undertaken are designed to stimulate both mentally and physically, and include arts and crafts, baking, cooking, indoor sports eg snooker, jigsaws, reading daily newspapers and basic computer skills. Our staff are trained to the highest care standards, can support those with mobility issues and those living with dementia, along with personal care if necessary, using the wet room available exclusively for those using the day service. The service operates from the impressive ground floor art deco style rooms of Barford Court, with access to an

outside terrace and lawned area. We are open 7 days a week: Monday to Friday 8.30am - 7.30pm, weekends 10.30am until 4.00pm. Weekday sessions are split into a morning session 8.30am - 2pm and an afternoon session from 2pm - 7.30pm. Being an outcome-based service means that our staff will work with you to ensure that you get exactly what you want out of each session. The service has been described as “…like being back in touch with old friends...” and “…a benefit to the community” and we would like to invite you to try it for yourself by booking a free fourhour taster session. Please call 01273 777736 and speak to Michele Belch, Home Manager, or one of the Day Service Team Leaders.
