Happy New Year to all Poets Corner residents! We hope you had a relaxing Christmas and are looking forward to the new decade. If you’d like to welcome the new year Chinese-style, Asiana in Portland Road will be celebrating with a lion dance on 26th January. We have details of how you can get your Christmas tree collected for a small donation to charity and an article from Al-Anon, who run a support group at St Philip’s Church for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking. This month’s Poets Person is independent celebrant Stewart O’Sullivan, who can give you a very special personalised wedding, and Councillor Carmen Appich updates us on what the Westbourne councillors have been busy with lately. We wish you a very happy new year! The Poets Pages Team info@poetspages.co.uk www.poetspages.co.uk Cover photo: Stoneham Park

News from the Friends of Stoneham Park…
Raise a glass to the Twenty-Twenties It’s now 2020. 20 years since the end of the Twentieth Century and 20 percent of the way through the present century. For this Generation X-er, I have lived almost as much of my life in this century as in the last. The slightly dizzying feeling of time marching on is palpable. The last 20 years have seen great changes in the life of Stoneham Park. At the Millennium, the park still sorely needed many improvements. For a long time there was next to no grass laid at all, with cheap-to-maintain tarmac being considered adequate in a mere recreation area for the labouring classes. By 2001, there were only two swings in the whole park, which had become notorious for drug abuse, vandalism and arson. A concerted campaign by local residents to raise funds, clear up the space and lobby the council began to bear fruit. By 2004 there was a ParkSafe scheme to reduce anti-social behaviour and things started to look up. New swings and
decent play equipment were installed. Lawns and flower beds were laid out, with some of the spiky hedging cut back. The café, which had opened in the year 2000 as a volunteer project, became a commercial enterprise not long after Stoneham Park won its first Green Flag award in 2011. In 2013, the centenary of the park was celebrated in style. A ping pong table was installed and the iconic mural was repainted in 2017. The last two decades have been twenty tremendous years, yet the work still goes on. There are all sorts of nascent plans for a wildlife area, more trees, shade for the preschoolers’ park and better games facilities. Looking back, securing funding has always been difficult which is why it is vital we take the initiative to raise our own.

Our Christmas Market and Santa’s Grotto on 7 December was an enormous success. The weather was good and the sun shone. The music played, the choir sang and the mulled wine flowed. Crowds turned out and people were happy. In all we took nearly £1,400 on the day, making a respectable surplus for our coffers. And the band of local volunteers who made all this happen had a very enjoyable time. There is not enough space to thank all the people who helped us on the day, who donated prizes for the raffle, who bought a pitch for a stall, who provided entertainment or allowed us to use their facilities. You know who you are so, from the bottom of my heart, thank you and raise a glass to the Twenty Twenties! Richard Hearnden

Meet a local resident who conducts weddings…
Poets Person… Stewart O’Sullivan Stewart O’Sullivan lives in Cowper Street and is an Independent Celebrant. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I have lived in Poets Corner for three years and love the vibe of the community! We are really lucky on Cowper Street to be surrounded by great neighbours, independent coffee shops and businesses that create such a lovely feel in our corner of Hove! How did you come to be a celebrant? I have often been called upon to be either master of ceremonies or best man so it seemed like a natural progression! I am Irish and we love to tell a good old story so being a celebrant allows me to do all of the things I love…meeting people, talking and sharing
Unattached? Aged 50+?
The Group offers a great opportunity to meet new friends of both sexes in a welcoming atmosphere. Walks, lunches and dinners, golf, theatre, pub evenings, sports and holidays. We have a great time. So push open that door, come in and join us. You’ll be very welcome.
Take a look at our website
their stories! I am qualified with The Fellowship of Professional Celebrants. Tell us more about your work… More and more couples are moving away from the traditional-style wedding nowadays, wanting to personalise their big day! A Celebrant allows you the freedom to have the wedding you want...your day – your way! I love to include a ‘ring warming’ whereby the rings are passed around the guests throughout the ceremony to hold for a moment and make a wish…by the time my couples exchange those rings they are filled with all the love and good wishes of their guests. Handfasting ceremonies are also very on trend – an ancient Celtic tradition symbolising the binding together of two people and the origin of the phrase ‘tying the knot!’ What is the most memorable ceremony you have conducted? I am lucky that I get to work with people at a very exciting chapter of their lives. I recently conducted the ceremony of two lovely grooms who lived in Hong Kong and had been together for 26 years…long before an LGBTQ wedding ceremony would even have been possible! On their wedding day, they had invited friends they had met through their travels in life, so it was a wedding and a reunion all rolled into one! We even had Chinese dragon dancers as a nod to where they live. It was certainly a colourful celebration! What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love to network with other wedding suppliers in the area and to support our local independent coffee shops so can often be found there chatting all things wedding related! Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…
“If I don’t speak, who will?” Alfred Huberman Holocaust Memorial Day, 27th January 2020, marks 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. One West Hove resident dedicated his life to bearing witness to the Holocaust in the hope that his own harrowing story would help future generations learn the lessons of the past, and to show how the Holocaust was a process which started with intolerance and discrimination. Painful though his memories were, Alfred gave talks to local schools and community groups. His widow told me: “Alfred wanted everyone to know what hatred of the other could bring about.” Alfred was part of a large, happy, close-knit family in Pulawy (Poland). Although he had previously encountered anti-Semitism, after the Wehrmacht invaded in 1939, the Jewish population was immediately confronted with violence – savage beatings; deportation for slave labour; driven into overcrowded ghettos. 11-year-old Alfred and his family fled to the countryside but, denounced by the local mayor, were forced into a Jewish ghetto. His family were torn from each other during a roundup; his last heart-breaking memory was of his youngest sister, terrified and distraught. Alfred was deported to a slave labour camp where, working in a munitions factory, he suffered from TNT poisoning and tuberculosis. Later, he was transferred to Buchenwald concentration camp from where – starved, emaciated and ill - he was forced on a Death March to Theresienstadt concentration camp. He was liberated in May 1945. Among 732 child Holocaust survivors brought to England, Alfred was first welcomed to Windermere (Lake District), before moving to Hove in 1946. He traced one sister who had miraculously survived Auschwitz; his parents, four sisters and more than 50 relatives perished in the death camps.
This is the only surviving photo of Alfred with his five sisters. Only Alfred and Ides survived the Holocaust. © Huberman Family
“I get upset when I cannot remember their names. I am the only one left who knew them, what they looked like, so I often repeat to myself my cousins’ names.” He worked as a master tailor in Brighton, married a local girl and had three children. Alfred died in 2011. His legacy is The Alfred Huberman Award to encourage young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and to ensure that its horrors should never be forgotten (see separate article). You can celebrate Chinese New Year in Portland Road...
A writing competition for children and young people…
Lion Dance at Asiana
The Alfred Huberman Award
Last January Asiana at 117 Portland Road had a great time celebrating their first Chinese New Year in Portland Road.
The Alfred Huberman Award is a writing competition designed to encourage young people to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and to ensure that its horrors should never be forgotten.
Chinese New Year 2020 starts on 25th January and 2020 is the Year of the Rat. The Rat is the first sign from the 12-year cycle of animals which appear in the Chinese Zodiac and the Year of the Rat is therefore considered a year of new beginnings and renewals. There will again be a Lion Dance performance for Chinese New Year at Asiana on the afternoon of Sunday 26th January. For updates, visit Facebook: Asiana Grocery & Dim Sum.
The writing can take the form of a short essay, letter, poem or creative writing (max 500 words). Entries should demonstrate understanding of the Holocaust; how the story impacts on them; and the hopes they have for the future. There are two categories: primary school children aged 8-11 years (1st, 2nd, 3rd prizes of Waterstone vouchers of £25, £15, £10) & secondary school children aged 11-18 years (1st 2nd, 3rd prizes of £100, £50, £25 respectively). Prizes are awarded for the most striking pieces of writing. Closing date 30 June 2020. Entries accepted from schools and individuals. Al-Anon provide support for anyone affected by someone else’s drinking…
Al-Anon Family Groups... Al-Anon Family Groups provide support to anyone whose life is, or has been, affected by someone else’s drinking, regardless of whether that person is still drinking or not, with currently over 700 meetings around the UK and Ireland and over 24,000 meetings worldwide. Lisa, 49, shares her story: “I met my husband when I was 20 years old. There was an instant attraction and within a month of meeting we were living together and inseparable. I knew he liked to have a drink, but I had no idea what an alcoholic was. “On our wedding day, he was hungover even though I had pleaded with him not to drink the night before. I worried every time he wasn’t home when he was supposed to be – “Is he dead?” I would ask myself. It got worse when I got pregnant; when our first child was born, he disappeared for almost four days. After our second child was born things got even worse; he was hardly ever home. “When the children cried for his attention, he would put on earphones and turn the volume up. It was so awful that I began to realise I was happier when he wasn’t there, so finally I asked him to leave and he did! “With the help of Al-Anon meetings I am improving. I have begun detaching from responsibilities that are not mine. For almost 30 years I have carried the responsibility that it was my fault the children were not raised by a decent father. My children ended up having a good life, and that was thanks to me. It’s hard to feel
comfortable with that, but it is necessary for me to let go of blame, both of him, and of myself.” A new Al-Anon group has recently begun meeting at St Philip’s Church, 71 New Church Road (in the Vestry), 7-8pm on Wednesdays, or find other meetings at www.al-anonuk.org.uk/find-a-meeting/. Contact enquiries@al-anonuk.org.uk or call our free and confidential helpline on 0800 0086 811 (10am10pm).

We’re talking to Mark Dalton of lookafteryourdog.co.uk.
New business comes to Brighton If you love dogs read on... Mark, I hear you’re bringing a new business to Brighton that will interest pet owners and particularly dog lovers. Tell us more. Yes, my brother has been running a successful dog boarding business in the Midlands for some years. Living locally, I know there are so many dog owners around Brighton & Hove who want to lead a more flexible life and need a trusted home for their precious pet while they’re away. Does that mean you will be looking for people to host these dogs in their own homes? Yes, we are keen to hear from people who have a secure home with space, and most importantly, love dogs. What sort of person would fit the bill? You may be retired or working from home, and you may already have a sociable or good natured dog who would enjoy the company. Pet lovers who’ve had a dog in the past often, in our experience, enjoy the chance to host a dog on a flexible basis.
And finally, a bit about you and the team?
What would potential home boarders need to do?
Well, my brother Steve is a retired police dog handler, hugely experienced in all dog management. Me and my partner Suzy live in Brighton and are dedicating ourselves to building up the business in Sussex. We also plan to add dog walking and home visits for cat feeding in the future.
Firstly, get in touch with us and we can answer your questions. Depending on how many dogs you look after, you may need a licence. We are experienced in working with the Councils and will guide all dog boarders through the regulatory process. The website and contact details are below and you are free to call any time with questions

Thanks and good luck with the venture.

An update on the council’s policy on the use of glyphosate...
Council to continue with manual weeding Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee has agreed to end the use of glyphosate by its Environmental Management services with immediate effect, other than in exceptional cases to kill invasive species such as Japanese knotweed or to kill tree stumps. Glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup, is the world’s most widely sold weed killer, but many experts believe it causes cancer in humans while destroying the environment and wildlife. The removal of weeds in parks and on hard surfaces will instead be undertaken manually. An additional six staff will be employed during the growing season and information from a trial in 2019 will mean that weed removal will be better planned in 2020. A report to the council said that ending the use of pesticides on hard surfaces would be likely to mean that there will be more visible weeds for longer periods of time. However, weeds contribute to biodiversity by providing a habitat and source of food for insects. Vanessa Brown, Conservative councillor for Hove Park, commented: “Residents like the idea of a pesticide-free city but they don’t like to see all the weeds on the pavements. They are particularly bad in the outlying areas that have less footfall and this has been made worse recently by the fact that all the leaves have been coming off the trees and they’ve got caught up in the weeds. It has become a mess in some places right across the pavement and a trip hazard.” The committee will review the new approach in autumn 2020 and a survey will seek the views of residents.

Hove Methodist Church in Portland Road need help to get their roof repaired...
Election results...
MP for Hove
Hove Methodist Church Roof Fund...
Peter Kyle was re-elected on 12th December as the Labour MP for Hove.
An old church in need of roof repairs is such a cliché, but here we are – any minute now we’ll be putting a thermometer up on the wall outside. We need to keep the hundreds of people using our church building every week warm and dry. A recent cascade of water down the organ stairs prompted us to call the roofer. Once he got the tiles off and the longterm damage was revealed, an initial quote of £3,000 ballooned to £20,000. And there are more tiles missing elsewhere. So, for the first time in years, we are raising money for ourselves. One of the church's community events As a church our policy is to spend what we have making this building earn its place in the local community, every penny of our rents goes towards this. We encourage groups that in turn foster community. Our aim is to spread the good news through the myriad moments of grace that happen under this roof. We welcome people of all faiths or no faith - one of our lunch club regulars is a militant atheist and enjoys regular theological disputation with the Minister but otherwise our theology is largely practice-based. We know some other local churches are in far worse situations than us, so we’re not asking for large sums, just a few pounds if you are moved to give them, dropped into the office, or passed to a lunch club volunteer, or popped through our letter box. Elin Star, Hove Methodist Church office@hovemethodistchurch.co.uk

Local news...
New plans for Sackville Trading Estate Moda Living have announced new redevelopment plans for the former retail park and coal yard on the east side of Sackville Road, to the north of the railway line. Previous plans were rejected by the council’s planning committee in July.
Moda say the development will be the most ambitious Moda community to date: “An urban village consisting of over 600 homes to rent combined with an abundance of public gardens, flexible workspace to collaborate and create, new shops, cafés, bars and infrastructure.” They say a series of naturally landscaped pathways will lead to a main boulevard and large public square, creating a new

community hub in central Hove. There will also be health and wellbeing facilities, bicycle rental, a car club and allotments. It is understood that the plans have been submitted to Brighton & Hove City Council, but at the time of writing they were not yet available on the council’s website.
News from the council...
Christmas tree collection Council emissions fall The Hove Soiree Rotary Club Christmas tree recycling collection will run again in January 2020 and will cover most of the roads between Boundary Road and Hove Street, from the south side of Portland Road down to the A259 Kingsway, as well as Poets Corner and the area around Stoneham. We ask for a minimum charitable donation of £4. More details online at http://bit.ly/HSR-Xmas - as well as a form to prebook a collection on Sunday 5th January. Please ensure that you leave your tree outside for collection by 11am to avoid us missing you, and if not prepaid, please leave cash in an envelope attached to the tree.
Brighton & Hove City Council saw another big reduction in carbon emissions in 2018/19. Figures show the city council’s total carbon footprint was 21,793 tonnes CO2e compared with 24,965 in 2017/18, a fall of 12.7%. The figures look at emissions including electricity, gas and oil use in corporate buildings, schools and housing (communal supplies) as well as emissions from street lighting electricity and fuel usage from fleet vehicles. The council’s goal is to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Carmen Appich and Chris Henry have been very busy over the last few weeks...
Councillor News... I am pleased to report that I have finally given up work in the credit union (though I remain an active member), so I can focus on my councillor tasks, which are many and varied. Chris and I have met several times with the West Hove Forum and the West Hove Seafront Action Group, to discuss ways of improving our neglected western seafront. We have also engaged with the new owner of “The Venue”, who is planning to work with residents to improve the area around this restaurant, which we hope will include new playground facilities and improved beach access for people with disabilities. City wide, Chris and I have been active in the licensing committee, including a visit with police to “Operation Marble” to observe policing and licensing in the night time economy. There’s also been a lot of training for us new councillors, on areas including licensing and planning policy and standards in public life. In my role as lead councillor for Adult Social Care I am engaging at national, city wide and local level: I have attended weekly meetings with council officers, quarterly sessions of the council’s health and wellbeing board, the public health workshop on dying well, the city safeguarding conference and the national care conference. I am very happy to report that I have found some amazing staff and residents during my visits to local care homes for older people and for people with disabilities. I am looking forward to completing my round of visits, including lunch clubs and day facilities, early in the new year. Chris has been busy with the South Downs National Park authority, and with school transport problems some parents have been experiencing following a change of provider. Please attend our monthly surgeries at Hove Museum, usually on the last Friday of the month, from 4 to 5 pm. And please do come and visit this fabulous museum, it’s worth a trip just to see the wonderful cinematic history exhibitions including some very rare old films! And please stay in touch and let us have your comments and concerns. You can get our contact details from the council’s website: https://new.brighton-hove.gov.uk, search for “councillors”. I hope you all had a good holiday and enjoyed the festivities.
