A New Exercise Session for Seniors in Hove

Keeping Dancing! Brighton and Hove has more than 35,000 people over 65. That’s about 13% of the local population, according to the latest (2011) Census. Most are retired, many are slowing down and some are becoming more socially isolated. Helen Thatcher, Hove resident, is offering a new weekly Vital Development dance-based exercise class, in collaboration with Brighton and Hove City Council, to promote health and happiness in this age bracket of the local population. Each session focuses on gentle keep-fit to build stamina and maintain mobility which supports an active lifestyle. Helen incorporates exercises of social interaction and building bonds of community between participants to stimulate a greater sense of overall well-being. A recent BUPA report into the health and well-being of older people found that fewer than 20% of men and women aged 65-74 get the recommended levels of physical exercise. It highlighted that, as people age, living a more sedentary and, often, more isolated life are

key contributors to poor health. According to a recent Arts Council England report (Dance and Health published in 2006) “dance activities can be easily adapted to suit the abilities and needs of older people. At the same time as helping reduce the risk of falls, the social side of dancing reduces isolation and helps build confidence and self-esteem.” Vital Development originated in South America and is now taught all over the world. There are no steps to learn, so participants can relax and enjoy finding their own way to express themselves to the music. A facilitator encourages and motivates. Attending regularly helps people feel better in themselves - physically, mentally, emotionally and usually all three! Past participants say they enjoy: “feeling better after the class”, “meeting new people”, “the music” and “gaining a sense of peace and calm”. Helen is warm and welcoming and has been teaching since 1994 to a wide range of people and different age groups. The session is held Wednesday 11.30am – 12.30pm at Elizabeth Court, 65 Wilbury Road, Hove. It is aimed at the over-60s and costs £3. For more details call: 077927 63106

Friends of Stoneham Park AGM The Friends of Stoneham Park are holding their AGM on Wednesday 2 July 7pm to 8.30 pm at the Hive Cafe in the Park. If you are interested in what they do or want to find out more and maybe get involved then stick it in your diary and make it along to the meeting. Alternatively you can easily find their Facebook page.

Another article featuring the poets after which our streets are named and Poets’ Corner gets its name...

Percy Bysshe Shelley....Shelley Road Percy Bysshe Shelley (4 August 1792 – 8 July 1822) was one of the major English Romantic poets and is regarded by critics as amongst the finest lyric poets in the English language. A radical in his poetry as well as his political and social views, Shelley did not achieve fame during his lifetime, but recognition for his poetry grew steadily following his death. Shelley was a key member of a close circle of visionary poets and writers that included Lord Byron, Leigh Hunt, Thomas Love Peacock, and his own second wife, Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. Shelley is perhaps best known for such classic poems as Ozymandias, Ode to the West Wind, To a Skylark, Music, When Soft Voices Die, The Cloud and The Masque of Anarchy. His other major works include long, visionary poems such as Queen Mab (later reworked as The Daemon of the World), Alastor, The Revolt of Islam, Adonaïs, the unfinished work The Triumph of Life; and the visionary verse dramas The Cenci (1819) and Prometheus Unbound (1820). His close circle of admirers, however, included some progressive thinkers of the day, including his future father-in-law, the philosopher William Godwin. Though Shelley’s poetry and prose output remained steady throughout his life, most publishers and journals declined to publish his work for fear of being arrested themselves for blasphemy or sedition. Shelley did not live to see success and influence, although these reach down to the present day not only in literature, but in major movements in social and political thought. Shelley became an idol of the next three or four generations of poets, including important Victorian and PreRaphaelite poets such as Robert Browning and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. He was admired by Oscar Wilde, Thomas Hardy, Michael Bay, George Bernard Shaw, Bertrand Russell, W. B. Yeats, Karl Marx, Upton Sinclair and IsaEmporium

Poets’ Corner Past... St Peter’s Church St Peter’s Church in 1922 looking essentially the same as it does today. When this photo was taken, the land on either side in Portland Road was still vacant. In fact, the next building to the west was then the Portland Hotel some 100 yards away. The vacant lots gradually filled in during the next 10 years. Here we feature a new service set up in Brighton and Hove by Macmillian Cancer Support...

Macmillan Cancer Support...Team Up Team Up from Macmillan Cancer Support is a new service for anyone affected by cancer in Brighton and Hove. We noticed that there are plenty of willing people who want to volunteer their time, but they don’t have a lot of it to spare. Macmillan research also showed that some people with cancer and the people who look after them could do with an extra pair of hands around the house from time to time. Sometimes treatment knocks you for six and you’re just too tired or unable to do housework. Sometimes you’d just rather invite people round for a cup of tea and a chat than a dusting session. Sometimes there just isn’t anyone around to ask for help with the small stuff. We wanted to find a way to squeeze some good deeds into the diaries of busy Brightonians, whilst also helping out over-stretched people living with cancer, and carers in the community. Team Up connects people with a bit of spare time with people who could use a hand with housework and gardening. Whether you want to volunteer or get some support, you register online where you can then post or search for tasks in your neighbourhood. As a helper, you can pick up a task whenever you’ve got five minutes spare, there’s no regular commitment or obligation at all and none of them should take longer than an hour.

and an empty fridge then Team Up can help. Let us start ticking those annoying little jobs off your to-do list so you can focus on what’s important. Find out more and register at www.goteamup.org. uk and tell anyone who you think would like to know about this fab free service. You can also find us on www.facebook.com/teamupmacmillan and www.twitter.com/teamupmacmillan

All our helpers are security checked and we meet them all personally. People signing up can be at any stage in their cancer journey, or looking after someone who is, and you don’t need to have received any support from Macmillan in the past. So if you’ve got a bit of space in your life to help your neighbours out, then we’d love to hear from you. If you’re looking around at a growing pile of washing up

Best well-kept secret to weight loss. Yes, you read right: good old plain water is your best friend (or should be) if you’re trying to lose weight. Our brain is about 85% water and being the only part of our bodies to be constantly active, it requires vast quantities of energy to function. It derives that energy from food and water, so making sure you supply energy to your brain in the form of water will keep you from overeating. This translates into this BIG weight-loss tip: when you think you’re hungry, sip a large glass of water as you’re more likely to be thirsty. Aim for about 4-5 pints a day sipped slowly (never gulp down more than 2 pints an hour), but only in the form of room-temperature water. Hot drinks being diuretic and caffeinated drinks hunger-boosting, they will only aggravate your dehydration and weight gain, so stick to pure water. Sodas, diet/sugar-free drinks, juices, squash should all disappear from your shopping trolley as well as they will spike your blood sugar and result in energy ‘crashes’ that will make you reach for yet more sugar. In addition to water, increase your consumption of omega oils by eating more oily fish, nuts and seeds and lots of green leafy vegetables. These great fats will help to re-hydrate and re-energise your brain (and body) cells. Try it for a few weeks. What have you got to lose?.. Cheers! Nathalie x Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, mFNTP is a fully qualified Nutritional Therapist practising in various locations in Hove. She can be contacted by email: nathalie@ newleafnutrition.co.uk or on 07980 620010 for private consultations & painless and non-invasive food intolerance tests for adults and children.

Class Of Their Own...Babysitting service Are you in desperate need of a night out but not got anyone to look after your children? Let Class Of Their Own at Home help! They provide a babysitting service which prides itself on the quality of the babysitters they supply. The babysitters are professional and friendly and are experienced childcare professionals. Whether your child is awake or asleep, you know they are in a great pair of hands! Sam Thomson, Director, says, ‘My litmus test is always: would I be happy with this babysitter looking after my daughter? And the resounding answer is yes. I would not hesitate to recommend any of our sitters. Parents ask for the same sitters again and again, and the children really look forward to seeing them.’ What is unique about the service is that it is guaranteed for members, so you know you will never be let down at the last minute. Sam adds, ‘We don’t just rely on our robust recruitment processes to ensure the babysitters are good. We contact parents after every booking to ensure that they were happy with their babysitter - this gives everyone confidence that our sitters are of the highest quality.

n Class Of Their Ow At Home

It was only when I had my own child that I realised how useful it might be for the family to be offered the chance to meet the babysitter in advance, and, especially for young children, it has worked really well.’ For more information or to book a babysitter, visit www. classoftheirown.com/athome or call 01273 732868 or email babysitting@classoftheirown.com.
