We love to feature local Poets people - meet Mark Drayton......
Poets Person: Mark Drayton Mark Drayton lives in Molesworth Street and works for the Trust for Developing Communities (TDC). He is also a governor at Hove Junior School. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? Since July 2003, having moved to Brighton in 1988. What do you like about the area? People say “Hello, how are you?” And generally mean it. Where is your favourite local place to eat out? Tough one; so many to choose from, especially with the local pubs upping their game. In the end I would have to say Otello’s for the Italian food and the friendly welcome my family get when visiting. Tell us more about your job... I am the TDC community development worker for Portslade and Portland Road. TDC is a local charity that recently became the charity partner of the British Airways i360 and does most of the paid community work in the city. My job is varied but I spend most of my time supporting community groups such as local ‘Friends of Parks’ groups and Local Action Teams in Portslade and West Hove. Most recently I have been supporting Patient Participation Groups based in doctors’ surgeries in Hove such as Wish Park Surgery and have been helping groups apply for funding to promote their aims. For more information check our website: www.trustdevcom.org.uk. How can people get help to set up a new community group? Assuming the group in question is covered by my area they can always contact me on my email - mark. drayton@trustdevcom.org.uk - or contact the TDC directly. Another good source of support is ‘Community Works’ and the small groups network they operate via: www.bhcommunityworks.org.uk.
What do you do when not working for the TDC? I have another part time job as a trade union caseworker supporting and advising members on issues they face at work. My passions are pretty standard. Football, politics and real ale - not necessarily in that order. I play five-a-side with a group of veterans and am a season ticket holder at the Amex. Politically I rejoined the Labour Party after many, many years following Jeremy Corbyn’s historic and inspiring successful bid for the leadership and a pint of Harveys is my poison. Otherwise I enjoy facing life’s ups and downs with my family in Poets Corner and with the support of those who say “Hello, how are you?” and mean it.

Here is a report on local policing...
New Role for Local PCSOs Following a review of local neighbourhood policing, Joe Higgins and Bethany Edge will continue to be our local PCSOs for Wish and Westbourne wards.
in support of resolving local issues. They may also complete community resolutions for low level crimes. PCSOs will be equipped with body-worn video cameras and smartphones as these are rolled out across Sussex, giving them access to the latest information and intelligence. Stoneham Park is currently on the list of local priorities due to anti-social behaviour by a group of youths, and Hove Neighbourhood Policing Team urge all local residents and users of the park to report any crime or anti-social behaviour by calling 101, or 999 if appropriate. If you wish to sign up to their newsletter or discuss local policing issues, you can contact the PCSOs as follows: Wish ward - PCSO Joe Higgins: joe.higgins@sussex.pnn.police.uk Westbourne ward – PCSO Beth Edge:
PCSO Joe Higgins
They will however have a revised role from July, when they will be given new powers. The new role will involve investigating low level crime and antisocial behaviour. They will be able to complete basic investigative tasks, such as the taking of statements from victims of crime and handling court exhibits,

Here is a poem by one of our readers...
Seagulls’ Summer Summer, the sun shining bright and clear Is when me and my wife dear Watch our young ‘uns, newly hatched, Black eyed, sweet, and rather hunchbacked, On flat roof as they lurch and waddle Under the turn of the weather cockerel Before we snuggle between and betwixt Our chimneys tall, two rows of six. Us and the rest of the colony Like roosting in Poets’ Corner on Sea And, from above looking down At the folks on the ground Unable to thrive on pickings from bins Wingless and beetling about in tins, We sympathise for their plight And drop luck on them when we’re in flight. Seasons show magpies and jays Lapwings, even, a stone’s throw away. It’s countrified with squirrel and fox As us who once lived on rocks Now, at dusk, we’ll yip-yip in the sky Before wak-waking our young ‘uns lullabies And at dawn we’ll chorus with all good cheer Letting everyone know we’re happy to be here! Here we feature local business Splash Orthodontics.....
Splash Orthodontics – Part of the Local Community Previously known as Sackville Road Orthodontic Practice, Splash Orthodontics has been a part of the local Hove community for over 30 years. Once owned and run by Dr Andrew Farr, the practice has treated thousands of children and now their children. Taken over by Dr Iain Hoeltschi back in 2012, Splash Orthodontics now treats both private and NHS patients. Dr Iain Hoeltschi studied dentistry at King’s College Hospital, London, graduating in 1991. After working in Wales and Newcastle, he was awarded a Fellowship in Dental Surgery. He trained as a specialist orthodontist, before joining practices in Sydney and then Tunbridge Wells. Iain bought Sackville Road Orthodontic Clinic, now known as Splash Orthodontics, in 2012. Married to Marisa, with two young children, Iain enjoys running, cycling, music and the arts. Back in 2014 the practice underwent a makeover and rebranding, providing a bright new reception area, two clinical surgeries and a consultation area. Iain now treats both NHS patients up to the
age of 18 and private patients, offering them the latest treatments from Invisalign (clear removable brace). Iain says, “I love the fact that we are an independent practice and that we play a very big part in providing orthodontic treatment to the local community. It’s a great sense of achievement when you know that you have helped a patient that may once have come into the practice shy and embarrassed of their teeth to leave full of confidence and with a big smile. It’s a great feeling to be able to help someone regain confidence.” To book your free consultation contact Jan, Zoe or Caroline and let us put that smile back on your face. Private patients can call 01273 203514 for a free consultation. NHS children will need to be referred by your dentist.

An update from the West Hove Forum...
News from the West Hove Forum Hove Library Our last meeting was held prior to the council’s recent vote not to sell the old Hove Library Carnegie building. The guest speaker was Sally McMahon, Head of Libraries and Information Services at Brighton & Hove City Council. She spoke about the wide-ranging changes planned to the council’s library services, including the introduction of Libraries Extra from July so that people can get access to libraries when they are unstaffed. Sally then outlined the proposal to move Hove Library into Hove Museum, building a large extension at the back, with plans for a “cultural hub”. She said a lot of people were very concerned about the old building, but it’s a nightmare to run as a modern library service. Sally was questioned about the lack of parking at Hove Museum. She said that the council had looked at putting the library into Hove Town Hall; however, the only big enough space available there is on the second floor, which would mean problems with accessibility. One forum member suggested that the library could instead be put into Norton Road car park opposite Hove Town Hall, with another parking floor added on the top, which
Wish Park Surgery
would make it more accessible. Sally said that the car park hadn’t been considered as a location for the library, but she would look into it. Wish Park Surgery parking

The Wish Park Surgery Patients Participation Group is concerned about access difficulties for disabled and ill patients at the new surgery in Portland Road. There are six doctors’ parking bays and two taxi bays, but nothing for the pick-up and drop-off of ill and disabled patients, so a petition to the council will now be the only remedy. App for reporting hate crime The council’s Community Safety Team reported that there is a new app available called “Self Evident” for reporting hate crime. For more details, visit: https:// witnessconfident.org/self-evident-app . There is also an app called StreetLink for reporting rough sleepers you have concerns about. The information is picked up by St Mungo’s, the organisation that now runs the city’s rough sleepers service. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2.15pm on Wednesday 6th July, at Hove Methodist Church (Upper Hall), Portland Road. We will hear from community groups who will outline progress on the projects they were funded for through last year’s Healthy Neighbourhood Fund.

A Poet’s Video Game Ever heard of a “Typing Adventure” game? No, most people haven’t. Epistory - Typing Chronicles is a non-violent videogame in which the player explores an origami world while riding atop a giant, tripled-tailed fox. All interaction with the world (from opening chests, to planting flowers, to fending off hostile insects) takes place by typing words. Epistory is fun and sneakily educational, encouraging better typing and expanding vocabulary. But it’s a game foremost: either stressful or relaxing (depending on how good your typing is) with an emotionally mature story. You play as “the muse”, inspiring an author to tell her story as you progress through the origami world. It’s structured and styled a little like a poem, telling a deeply allegorical story of healing and identity. And it was written right here, in Poets Corner. I’ve always wanted to write for a living, but when I moved here in late 2013, I admit it was mostly just to flatter my ego. I wanted to add “Poets Corner” to my address to impress my fans – if I ever found any.
Then I got involved with the local games community, who gave me the confidence and experience to apply to work with Belgian developers Fishing Cactus. I pitched Epistory’s plot, wrote the script and directed the voice actress - and voilà, I’d made a game! You might not know it, but Brighton and Hove is a great hub for making games. We are lucky to have a thriving “indie” development scene, plus several major studios: including Studio Gobo (just around the corner behind Hove station) who developed the award-winning Star Wars play set for Disney Infinity; and The Chinese Room (Preston Park), who created BAFTA-winning Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture. Hove is full of Creative Assembly and former Lionhead alumni. And we have a high profile conference, Develop, held on the seafront every year. Without the support of Brighton Indies, Press Fire to Win, and the Brighton Game Collective (look them up on meetup.com), I’d never have had the courage to step up and write a game like Epistory. This community has given me excellent friends and wonderful opportunities: it’s a place where dreams can actually come true. Epistory is out now on PC, Mac and Linux, available on Steam and Itch.io, see www.epistorygame.com for more details. Joseph J Clark Twitter: @jjc_uk

Yoleri and Max Bower will tell the story of Tom, who dreams of being kissed, but he’s not sure whether by a man or by a woman, and he feels he should choose pretty quickly. Director Tania Banks said: “Ours is a city rich in diversity, which also reflects our student and staff population. Citizenship was a play that connected with us all as it communicates the themes of sexual identity, which are so relevant to the lives of young people. Friendship is also deeply rooted within this production and we have bonded on- and off-stage. We are absolutely over-themoon to perform at the National as this really is the stuff that dreams are made of.”
