Welcome to the eighth edition of

Poets’ Pages!!! Welcome to the June edition of Poets Pages and the onset of summer! Let’s hope we get a long and hot summer full of late evenings in the park and barbecues in the back garden! It is also the start of another World Cup, with the hope of the nation resting perilously on the shoulders of a few young men over in Brazil. Thankfully no one is expecting great things, so it won’t have the traditional anti-climax attached to it! We have the usual mix of local items for you this month and we hope you find something that you like within the pages of this edition. June is National Smile Month by the way, so bear that in mind and whatever happens in Brazil…keep smiling! Have a great June! Local news from in and around Poets Corner...

West Hove Juniors

What’s in a name? Many children from Poetc Corner attend the excellent West Hove Junior School. In September this year the school will be opening an extension at the old Hove Police Station site in Holland Road. In view of this the Governors of West Hove Junior School are proposing to change the name of the School to Hove Junior School (thus reflecting the location of both sites). The school have asked for views before taking a final decision. We have been reassured that no one will be expected to purchase new uniform. Colours and logos will remain mainly the same, with the small name change being phased in as items are replaced. Although we would have preferred the new school in Holland Road to be a separate school, on balance we think this small change to the name is probably appropriate in the circumstances. Councillors Denise Cobb and Graham Cox

We love to feature local people...if you fancy featuring let us know at info@poetspages.co.uk...

Poets Person... Lisa Southon What is your name and where in Poets’ Corner do you live? My name is Lisa Southon. I live a few doors away from Stoneham Park, and The Stoneham pub. Most people will remember my house as our original nursery where we ran our childcare business for 10 years. We moved back home at Christmas after relocating our baby unit to adjoin the pre-school at our newly refurbished setting, Glebe Hall, Hove. How long have you lived in the area? My grandparents moved to Rutland Road, Hove, in the early sixties. As a child I played in Stoneham Park, as have my own sons. I’ve seen the way Poets’ Corner has grown and flourished. It has so much to offer and there’s a real sense of community here. What do you like about living in Poets’ Corner? Everything we need is practically on our doorstep or a stone’s throw away. The local pubs and shops are brilliant, plus we’re blessed with great parks for the children

and excellent schools. The fact we’re close to the beach is an added bonus. We notice that you are a local business owner… tell us more… The story began 15 years ago when I couldn’t find flexible childcare for my own children. As a new mum I found there were no choices for when I could drop and pick up from the local nursery/pre-schools, which is not what you want to hear when you’re already juggling your new life/work regime. I began caring for my friends’ children in my own home. I was in my element - enjoying the experience of motherhood gave me the ability to empathise with the needs of other families who needed an affordable, caring environment for their children. I listened to the ‘little things’ and that’s where the inspiration for My First Word blossomed. Presently we have three settings…Glebe Hall in Hove, Ditchling Road, Brighton (Fiveways), and our newest edition, St Michael’s, at the Seven Dials. What is the most enjoyable part of your job? When teenagers approach me in the street and stop to chat: ‘Hi, remember me? You looked after me as a baby.’ Those moments are precious and generate a warm feeling of accomplishment. It’s quite amazing. In fact I’m flattered that they remember me. I must be doing something right!

heir full library of old local photos of Poets Corner. Here is another...

Poets’ Corner Past... This photograph shows what a large area of open ground existed on both sides of Portland Road in the 1920s. The year is 1921 and the houses in the background are some of the first Council houses built in Hove – those in the east wing of Ingram Crescent. Further along the line of empty Portland Road can be seen the Co-operative Bakery and just to the right of the man’s cap, Aldrington Cottages. One can only speculate as to the work in progress. It could be filling in a pit, as some existed in the fields between Portland Road and New Church road, or it might have been laying the foundations for the roadway of Portland Avenue. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti

Bathrooms by

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

Eat well feel stronger (part deux)

360 Home are a local building company, with a wealth of expertise installing bathrooms, wet rooms and shower rooms. We can help you build your bathroom to your needs and budgetary requirements. Visit our website or contact us for further information

As part two of my top tips to help you prepare for the beach (and bikinis and swimming trunks), here’s one that you may find will increase your energy and general well-being, whilst helping to shift unwanted pounds: Do you exercise a lot but can’t seem to lose any weight? Think about your body as a furnace that won’t burn (calories) unless it has enough fuel to do just that. Going for a run or to the gym after starving all day will wreak havoc with your energy levels and blood sugar. You will not only struggle to gather enough energy to put in the miles, but also your body won’t be able to ‘burn’ anything else but your good intentions and willpower. Your crashing blood sugar levels will then make you reach for the crisps and take-away menus as soon as you get home - wiping out all your efforts! So make sure you’ve had plenty to drink and some carbohydrates (pasta/rice/ potato/porridge/wholemeal bread) two to three hours before you exercise. If you exercise in the morning, have a banana or a couple of dried dates/apricots up to half an hour before heading out. You’ll have more energy to exercise more efficiently and you will burn more calories that way. Enjoy your next workout! Nathalie x Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, mFNTP is a fully qualified nutritional therapist practising in various locations in Hove. She can be contacted by email: nathalie@ newleafnutrition.co.uk or on 07980 620010 for private consultations & painless and non-invasive food intolerance tests for adults and children. She also offers two-hour long gluten/dairy/sugar-free cookery classes at Varndean School, Brighton, every month. Next class is ‘Cooking to Boost Your Energy on 14th June, 2-4pm. Another article featuring the poets after which our Streets are named amd Poets’ Corner gets its name... or in the case of Molesworth Street...

Mary Louisa Molesworth She was born in Rotterdam, a daughter of Charles Augustus Stewart (1809–1873), who later became a rich merchant in Manchester, and his wife, Agnes Janet Wilson (1810–1883). Mary had three brothers and two sisters. She was educated in Great Britain and Switzerland; much of her girlhood was spent in Manchester. In 1861 she married Major R Molesworth, nephew of Viscount Molesworth; they legally separated in 1879. Mrs Molesworth is best known as a writer of books for the young, such as Tell Me A Story (1875), Carrots (1876), The Cuckoo Clock (1877), The Tapestry Room (1879), and A Christmas Child (1880). She has been called “the Jane Austen of the nursery”, while The Carved Lions (1895) “is probably her masterpiece”. In the judgement of Roger Lancelyn Green: “Mary Louisa Molesworth typified late Victorian writing for girls. Aimed at girls too old for fairies and princesses but too young for Austen and the Brontës,

books by Molesworth had their share of amusement, but they also had a good deal of moral instruction. The girls reading Molesworth would grow up to be mothers; thus, the books emphasized Victorian notions of duty and self-sacrifice.” Typical of the time, her young child characters often use a lisping style, and words may be misspelt to represent children’s speech—”jography” for geography, for instance.

She took an interest in supernatural fiction. In 1888, she published a collection of supernatural tales under the title Four Ghost Stories, and in 1896 a similar collection of six tales under the title Uncanny Stories. In addition to those, her volume Studies and Stories includes a ghost story entitled “Old Gervais” and her Summer Stories for Boys and Girls includes “Not exactly a ghost story”. A new edition of The Cuckoo Clock was published in 1914. She died in 1921 and is buried in Brompton Cemetery, London

“Simon said he could sell our house in one week. It sold in one day following a very successful open day arranged by the agency. It was clear to us that not only did the agency have the correct marketing skills to sell our property, but they had a vast client base which is a credit to their reputation in Poets Corner. It was a pleasure dealing with this agency. - Ruben, Shelley Road.
