Welcome to Poets Pages!

Contents...

With the festival now over we move into what undeniably should be referred to as ‘Summer’. Whether this is reflected in the weather we experience remains to be seen but with fingers and toes crossed for all intents and purposes Summer is here!!! We have a variety of local items for you this month with the stand out item being news of the imminent closure of the YMCA Community Centre in Marmion Road. It’s very sad to see this community centre going and we hope that the effect on local life isn’t too significant. Please have a good look through this edition and see what you find of interest. Good luck to England this Summer in the European Championships!! Poets Pages Team 01273 551021 info@poetspages.co.uk Cover: Peter Spells

Local news about Stoneham Park...

News from the Friends of Stoneham Park As the warmer weather is here, the park is being used by more and more people. It’s lovely to see the crowds after school, people having a rest after work, picnickers and lots of people of all ages using the park all day. The park is a public space and is there for everyone in our community so please come and take advantage of our little green (and grey) oasis in the middle of Poets Corner. Our local PCSOs patrol at least once a day and the more the park is used, the safer it is. Small improvements are always being made, mainly thanks to the Parks Department and our wonderful Park Ranger, Min. The area around our wooden pigs has been redone so it’s no longer the mud bath real pigs would love. The picnic benches have been bolted down so they are safer to use. Sadly, rubbish in the park is a constant issue, with the seagulls making it worse. Some recycling bins have appeared on the pavement next to the park on Tamworth Road so please make sure you recycle, leaving more room for rubbish in our bins. We are planning a more social AGM this year with Pimm’s in the Park at 6.30pm on 7 July followed by a

(short) business bit to vote on Officers. Please come and join us for a drink to celebrate our hard work over the last year and see what we are planning for the next year. If you think you can help out in any way then come along and have a chat and get involved - we are always in need of more help! Any ideas and suggestions are always welcome. If you’d like to get more involved please email us on friends.of.stoneham.park@gmail.com or follow us on Facebook/FriendsOfStonehamPark or Twitter @friendsstoneham. We are also on Instagram as Stoneham Park, so tag us in your photos.

We love to feature local Poets people - meet Louise...

Poets Person: Louise Symington Louise Symington lives on Sackville Road and is a dietitian. She runs workshops for parents in the Brighton and Hove area as well as working with people on an individual basis. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I’ve lived in Poets Corner for two years. My husband and I love being outdoors and often go camping and surfing. Although we appreciate being close to nature, we also like to be able to dip into the urban lifestyle too so this area is perfect. What do you most like about the area? I really like Portland Road and often find myself there for some reason or another most days. When we first moved here I thought I’d be going into Brighton all the time but this area has everything I need. I like the variety of buildings, shops and amenities. It’s changing a lot and it’s interesting to watch it blossom. What was your last meal out? The last time I went out to eat was at the Connaught Pub. It’s good for us as we have a toddler and it is family friendly. We went down on a ‘Meat Free Monday’

and I enjoyed a lasagne. Although I’m not vegetarian I’m interested in animal welfare, fair trade and environment so it was good to go down and support their healthier, ethical menu. Tell us about the dietetic sessions you run at Small Talk Play Café...

Since having my daughter in 2014, I often find myself in cafés with other mums and chatting about baby health. There are so many mixed messages around diet online and in the press, it can be very confusing for new mums. It gave me the incentive to start doing some local nutrition workshops (and other topics eg fussy eating) which would be affordable. Small Talk is one of my favourite child-friendly cafés so I thought it would be an ideal venue. What are your top tips for getting children to eat healthily?

I’d advise getting babies to try vegetables when they first start eating. This will help train them to like these foods. It’s good to prevent them getting a taste for sweet/ salty foods too early on in life. Also, involving your child in the process of preparing and cooking is essential. If you are cooking, let them see, feel, smell and taste the ingredients. This will not only stimulate their mind but will make the new world of solid food less daunting. Junction of Old Shoreham and Sackville Road Looking down Sackville Road from Nevill Road in December 1967, before the widening of either road had commenced. Previously there had been two changes in this part of Sackville Road, originally the old Hove Drove. Early in the 1930s the ground floor of the Sackville Hotel (now The Hove Park Tavern) had been built out beyond the original elevation. Until 1936 the terrace of five buildings north of Frith Road had been private houses with small front gardens similar to the rest of the houses on this side above the railway bridge, but with the building of Nevill Road which commenced in 1933 they were converted to shops.

Sad news for Poets Corner...

YMCA in Marmion Road to close in July Sadly, the YMCA building in Marmion Road is to close in the summer. Chas Walker, Chief Executive of YMCA DownsLink Group, said: “YMCA DownsLink Group has been open about our need to consider the future of our Centre at Marmion Road. The current operating environment for charities, with the changes in public funding, is challenging for us and our Centre requires a level of investment that isn’t realistic for the Charity. This has been a difficult decision making process for us; the Centre is where our YMCA began in the 1930s and we have been touched by the support for the YMCA through the Save Hove YMCA community response. “As an organisation we have to be realistic about the future and our Trustees are responsible for ensuring YMCA DLG is fit for purpose in that future. YMCA DLG put in a residential planning application for five town houses, which was unanimously approved by the Council’s Planning Committee in September of last

year. Since that date we have been looking internally at the impact of current government policy on our finances, the value of our site at Marmion Road and our ability to provide continuity of service if we were to sell the building. “The outcome of this work is that we have had a very competitive offer for the site from a reputable local developer. It is also clear that funding cuts will continue to have a significant impact on our organisation and the young people YMCA DLG supports. We have been working closely with the Council and other community sector partners to look at how we could relocate a number of our existing services that operate from the Centre. “We have now concluded this work and our Trustees have taken the decision to shut the Centre and sell our site at Marmion Road in line with our recent planning consent. Our activities will be shutting through July as part of the sale process and I can confirm that the purchaser will be developing the site in line with planning permission gained by YMCA DLG. We will be relocating all our contracted services and we are working hard to secure local premises in the West Hove area where we can continue to provide a local community after school and holiday club. “For those who regularly use the Centre I would like to thank you for your support, and for our neighbours I do believe that the planning permission gained by YMCA DLG and the credibility of the local developer will deliver a residential scheme that fits well in the local area.”

It’s a celebration of Volunteers’ Week...

Volunteers’ Week June 2016 Martlets volunteers make a real difference – will you join them? At Martlets, volunteers are vital. They offer counselling, spiritual support, legal and financial assistance as well as patient transport. They provide massage, acupuncture, manicures, pedicures, hair care, pampering and art therapy, all of which help local people live through their terminal illness.

We’re also on the front line ensuring that valuable items are spotted and sent to our eBay team where they can raise even more money for the hospice. I enjoy the fact that I am helping a wonderful organisation that supports people at such a difficult time.”

They help run our shops, support our events and fundraise. They arrange flowers, work in our community café, help organise our community choir, keep our gardens beautiful, sort clothes, books, bric-abrac and, in the past 12 months, have made over 13,000 cups of tea in our hospice! Without them we wouldn’t be able to care for nearly 1,000 local people a year. On behalf of everyone at Martlets we want to say a big thank you to all our volunteers. Gill volunteers in our warehouse in Hove, sorting through donated clothes:

We need you! Do you want to make a difference? Volunteer at Martlets and you’ll learn new skills, have fun, and make new friends – all while helping out your local charity. It’s not just about our hospice in Hove – we currently need volunteers to help in our charity shops and furniture warehouse. Interested? Let us know and we’ll get back to you with the latest volunteering opportunities. Local independent business...

Sussex Funeral Services (for caring, compassion & choice) Family owned Independent Funeral Directors, Sussex Funeral Services, have been located in Portland Road, Hove, since 2013 and have recently opened their second branch in Eastern Road, Brighton. The business is owned and managed by Philip Evans Jnr and his wife Sallie. Philip says, “Being a truly independent company we are able to provide a completely bespoke service which is responsive to individual needs. Whether you require a traditional religious service, or an alternative approach, we can cater for your specific requirements. We also have available a fully qualified and experienced female carer, to look after the personal needs of your loved ones. “We realise that arranging a funeral can be one of the most challenging things you will ever have to do for your loved one. That is why we not only care for the deceased with the utmost respect, sensitivity and professionalism, but we can also support you through the myriad of options available to mark the passing of a life.

We emphasise our company slogan – “For Caring, Compassion & Choice”. “For us it is all about offering you choices and you remain in control. We won’t rush you into making immediate decisions, but rather, we will take the time with you, to determine what type of funeral you want.” As well as ‘at need’ funeral arrangements, they also offer pre-paid funeral plans, which can provide peace of mind for you and help to make things easier for your family. The benefit of a pre-paid being that you pay at today’s price and beat inflation, no matter when the service might be required. Further information can be found on the website www.sussexfunerals.com

News of the launch of a local choir...

Shining a Light for Disability We are pleased to announce the launch of Shine Your Light Choir, Brighton and Hove’s first pan-disability choir for adults with disabilities and health conditions of all kinds, and for carers. The choir, which is supported by Scope and People’s Health Trust, is part of Scope’s five Local People Programmes across England aimed at asking disabled people what change is needed in their communities and providing resources for them to address the issues that matter to them most. Christian Holder and Tom Isaacs felt that more could be done locally to help all disabled people access the happiness and health benefits of singing. Having a disability can be “isolating and lonely” and singing “builds self-esteem and confidence” as well as “making you feel good!” Josephine, who has lupus, fibromyalgia and is a wheelchair user, says: “Even when I am in a lot of pain I feel much better after singing, but there are not many fully accessible choirs.” Following a successful bid to the Hove Local People Programme by Christian and Tom for a Scope grant, Shine

CRB ROOFING

The choir will involve simple, uplifting songs from across the globe, in many moods and genres, taught by ear so you don’t need to be able to read music. Here is the latest in the series of gardening articles written especially for Poets Corner gardeners...

Poets Gardens and Patios - Summer Summer can mean a lot of maintenance for plants in pots, continual watering, deadheading and occasionally replanting. However if you are away a lot and want an interesting display all year long requiring little attention, why not choose slow-growing succulents. Plant them, in well-drained soil, during autumn and spring but not winter, as it’s too cold and wet. Very few pests and diseases bother succulents. Succulent plants thrive with minimum fuss and grow in small amounts of soil and the maximum amount of sunshine. Better still, they require little moisture. Succulents have bold foliage forms and bright colours. They are fun to work with, and with so many varieties there is something for everyone. Avoid the really prickly ones, as they will be difficult to control. Concentrate on the smooth-leafed succulents for your pots such as Echeveria, Aeonium, Crassula, Sempervivum, Sedum, Agave and Cotyledons. Arrange them into artistic designs — planting many of the same variety will create a sweep of colour like a painting and will be more visually effective. Focus on harmonising colours, not

clashing ones, and you will create a tranquil collection pleasing to the eye. Being in pots, those of you who rent will be able to take your collection from house to house. Persistently wet soil is really bad for succulents, as their stems will rot away at the base. Avoid this by planting in well-drained soils, crevices, pots, and mounded garden beds, and completely avoid watering in winter and shelter from heavy rainstorms if possible.
