Welcome to Poets Pages! Don’t you just love it when the temperatures start rising and the days start to stretch out and the long winter months start to recede behind us! We have plenty for you this month so put the kettle on, put your heels up on the kitchen table and enjoy a nice cuppa and a browse through your local directory and please do let us know what you like about it and also how you think it could be improved. We love to feature local people. Meet Anna Lin ...

Poets Person: Anna Lin Anna lives in Portland Road. She is a former Miss Malaysia and now runs Anna L Designs, also in Portland Road. What was your role as Miss Malaysia? I was Miss Malaysia Universe in 1990 and Mrs Malaysia World in 2004. I was busy doing public appearances, for example opening and gracing events and attending charity events. I am now the official licensee and pageant organiser for Miss Malaysia World in association with Miss World United Kingdom. Does that involve a lot of travel? Yes, I normally travel for grand final night to whichever country is holding Miss World. The live show has two billion viewers across the world. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I’ve lived here with my family for about two years. Before that we lived in Bayswater, Central London, for more than ten years, after leaving Malaysia.

The one & only laura ashley

store in Brighton & hove

plus interior design service by Anna L Designs

What do you like about living here? I like Brighton & Hove because of the fresh sea air and because it’s good for bringing up a family. Would you like any changes to be made? I think there should be changes to make it more attractive to tourists to come here. It should be more cosmopolitan.

Tell us more about your shop, Anna L Designs... I have a very established brand, Laura Ashley – we are the only Laura Ashley stockist in Brighton & Hove. We need to get people to be aware that we are here now in Portland Road. It’s easily accessible by car, and if you want to buy anything for your home you can park right in front of the shop. It’s a boutique, selling men’s and ladies’ fashions, handbags, accessories and things for the home, such as furniture, lights and wallpaper. You can also come in for nice Italian coffee and gluten-free cake. What do you like to do when you’re not working? I enjoy yoga classes and swimming. I also like relaxing with a nice cup of coffee!

City Reads have announced their chosen book for 2016...

City Reads 2016 – The Good Son by Paul McVeigh Brighton & Hove’s BIG READ returns to its to its cultural home in 2016 as City Reads becomes part of the Brighton Festival’s 50th anniversary celebrations. The chosen book is “The Good Son” by Paul McVeigh. “The Good Son” is a bitter-sweet tale, set in 1980s Belfast. Mickey Donnelly is smart, which isn’t a good thing in his part of town. Despite having a dog called Killer and being in love with the girl next door, everyone calls him ‘gay’. It doesn’t help that his best friend is his little sister, Wee Maggie, and that everyone knows he loves his ma more than anything in the world. Sarah Hutchings, Artistic Director of City Reads, said: “Choosing one book for a whole city to read, share and celebrate is a wonderful thing because it brings people together. This outstanding debut from Brighton-based Northern Irish writer Paul McVeigh was

the perfect choice as this year marks the centenary of the Easter Rising, a rebellion that led to the eventual signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the creation of Northern Ireland, which is where the story is set. I defy anyone not to fall in love with its protagonist Mickey Donnelly. I hope you love it as much as we do.” From its launch on World Book Day (3 March) to the final event at Brighton Festival on 29 May, there’s a wide range of events encouraging residents across the city to get reading and start talking. Highlights include: an Irish Whiskey Tasting on St Patrick’s Day (17 March), with readings from The Good Son and live music, a special screening on 24 April of Pat O’Connor’s 1984 film Cal, and The City Reads Book Quiz returns on 27 April.

Young City Reads Danny Wallace’s “Hamish and the Worldstoppers” has been chosen for Young City Reads. What would YOU do...if the whole world just stopped? Yes, the WHOLE WORLD. Birds in the air. Planes in the sky. And every single person on the planet - except you. Because that’s what keeps happening to tenyear-old Hamish Ellerby. And it’s being caused by the WorldStoppers and their terrifying friends, the Terribles! They have a PLAN. They want to take our world for their own... Oh, and they hate children. The next in the series of gardening articles prepared especially for Poets Pages...

Poets Gardens and Patios - Spring Spring should see your pots and containers beginning to burst into life. The bulbs that were planted in autumn should be in full bloom, but these will fade away as summer arrives. It is quick and easy to buy bedding plants to replace your bulbs, but it is far more rewarding financially and enjoyable to sow your own. Annuals make great bedding plants with a large variety of colour and size to suit any tastes. They complete their lifecycle within 12 months so are always grown from seed in spring. You can choose to stick to one colour for dramatic effect or mix many colours for a cheery look. Sunflowers come in many sizes and shapes and they can add the height in your pots; don’t forget to stake them as they grow if you have chosen a tall variety. Sow your chosen seeds in seed trays indoors using multi-purpose compost. Ensure you water the compost first and allow it to soak in. The seeds should be sown as finely as possible so you have no need to thin the seedlings later. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of compost. Place them in a light, sheltered place out of

direct sunlight, until they have germinated. Keep moist but don’t over-water. Why not also sow some herbs at the same time? They are aromatic and can break up colourful flower displays with their ranges of green foliage. Learn how to make your own delicious bread...

Learn To Bake Bread with Stoneham Bakehouse Have you always wanted to make your own bread, but need a bit of help? Simon Cobb of Stoneham Bakehouse now runs a monthly Everyday Bread workshop at The Hive in Stoneham Park to teach you the basic skills you need. There are only four participants in each workshop, so Simon, a former school teacher, can give you plenty of individual attention. He is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and gives you some great tips. Knowing a bit of the science behind bread-making can help you to understand the method and get it right. During the evening, you will learn how to make two different loaves – an everyday loaf and a light malthouse loaf – as well as bread rolls. Simon teaches the basics of fermentation, kneading, shaping, scaling and baking, in a very relaxed atmosphere. You can have fun playing around with the dough to experiment with different shapes for your bread rolls, eg knots and plaits, and decorating them with seeds. Most people are put off making their own bread, as it seems to be such a long process, but for much of this Share the Roads, Brighton & Hove

time you are just waiting for the dough to rise or bake, so you can get on with other things. Once the hard work is done and you are waiting for your bread to bake, Simon serves up a delicious vegetarian soup to accompany some flatbread you’ve just made, and you get to have a good chat with your fellow participants. It’s great to go home at the end of the evening with a bag full of warm bread and rolls! The workshops run from 6pm to 10pm on a Monday evening and cost £50. This includes the ingredients, recipes and refreshments. The next workshops are on March 21st, April 18th and May 16th. There is also a bun workshop on 7th March. Stoneham Bakehouse is a community interest company, so any profits go back into community projects. There are now more than 20 volunteer bakers, and their community work includes healthy food and bread workshops with Happitots Preschool and Hove Junior School. To order bread from Stoneham Bakehouse, email orders@stonehambakehouse.org.uk, phone 07786 927110, or fill in a form at The Hive. Simon and his volunteers are looking for a permanent home, so that they can do more baking. If you can help with this, or would like more information on the workshops, please contact Simon at stonehambakehouse@ gmail.com , or visit stonehambakehouse.org.uk .

An update from The West Hove Forum....

Police & Crime Commissioner Speaks at The West Hove Forum The Police & Crime Commissioner (PCC), Katy Bourne, attended the latest meeting of the West Hove Forum and explained her role. PCCs came into being about 3½ years ago, to replace the old police authorities. Before that, police priorities would be set by the Government. The Sussex Police Authority had 17 members who ensured that the priorities set by the Government were carried out by the Chief Constable. However, some felt they didn’t connect with the public. The PCC sets police priorities which must reflect the wishes of local people. She is also responsible for the police budget - £250 million annually. This has to be cut by £30-35 million and Sussex Police will be smaller in numbers by 2020. The senior policing team in Sussex are designing a new local policing model and they are currently looking at neighbourhood policing. Crime types have been changing, with much theft and fraud now online, and many historic cases of child abuse reported. Katy Bourne said that local neighbourhood policing needs to adapt to these changes. Some PCSOs have taken on extra responsibility, without getting paid for it. They may be given more powers around licensing and investigation. When the new role is decided, they will get paid more. There will be fewer PCSOs, but we don’t yet know how many will be lost. The PCC has been given permission to raise the police precept of the council tax by £5 per year, to pay for an additional 45 police officers who can investigate digital crime. The next West Hove Forum meeting will be at 2pm on Wednesday 23rd March at Muriel House, Ingram Crescent. If you would like to attend on behalf of a residents’ association, business or other organisation, please email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com or phone the Chair, Ron Gurney, on 01273 385361.

Following on from the article we ran in January.....

Stories of Teenage Love, Loss and Rebellion for Free Oral History App In our January issue we shared the news of a Brighton & Hove oral history project which has been supporting students from Longhill School to recruit, interview and photograph people with a story to tell about being a teenager in Brighton & Hove in the 40s, 50s & 60s. Since then, the Giddy project has staged four Memory Days attracting 33 people to come and tell their stories of giddy love, loss and rebellion – all of which will be used to create a free oral history app. Using GPS navigation technology, the Giddy app will take users on an alternative walking tour of the city, punctuated by the personal histories straight from the mouths of the people who lived them. Histories such as those told by the man who, after a gig in 1969, met Jimi Hendrix in a beaten-up MG at the Dome stage door. He recounts how, after having his tambourine signed by the man himself, he was chased by a gaggle of screaming fans through the North Laine, narrowly missing being mobbed.

Also, the lady who told of finding first love and first kisses in Preston Park at the age of 13, and was subsequently forbidden by her parents to see her boyfriend again. Forty years later she managed to find him online and they’ve been together ever since. And the man who described his passion for fashion and music and how it led him to Brighton clubland and eventually discovering his gay sexuality. Carina Westling of The Nimbus Group, the Brighton arts collective behind Giddy, says: “We wanted to use digital technology to create something that celebrates the stuff of life that unites us as humans; that reveals our individuality but also highlights universal themes associated with youth that span the generations. Oral history offers a perspective of the past that stands outside the received wisdom of the history books. Our intention for Giddy is to bring history to life in such a way that the young (or not so young) people who hear these stories will never look at older people in quite the same way again.” Giddy will be launching as part of Brighton Festival in May. To find out more and keep up to date with the project as it progresses, visit: www.facebook.com/Giddy-Brighton, and follow @NimbusGrp on Twitter

After many years it looks like King Alfred may well get a make over!!

Plans proposed for the King Alfred Leisure Centre... We are at last hearing proper debate about the King Alfred project and this is music to my ears. Some simply want to see the new facility built – urgently. Others think that the proposed enabling development is too big. Some don’t want any enabling development on the site at all. Many, including me, want to see a 50m pool. Others actually quite like the current building and want to see it refurbished (again). When I started the campaign with Mike Weatherley MP to get a new public sports centre for Hove, we wanted to see a quality facility on the current site alongside however many flats were required to pay for it. We were very successful in persuading Brighton & Hove City Council to kick-start the project but, once this principle of development had been established, the council stopped listening.

The proposed design for the King Alfred Leisure Centre

For some bizarre reason, the swimming clubs weren’t even consulted when the specification was written. Nobody had the courtesy to see the bowlers, weightlifters or dancers. Much was decided from behind a desk. This was wrong. As it goes, I do think that we have reached something not a million miles away from the ideal solution. There is much good about what has been proposed by Rob Starr and Crest Nicholson. Most importantly, the sports centre is to be breathtaking. It will be the pride of Sussex once completed. The height and number of flats are lower than those of the Frank Gehry scheme which of course has planning permission already (18 vs 26 storeys, and 565 vs 751 flats). And the finances of the scheme actually stack up. If we are to get it spot-on then we need more public input. As the Conservative representative on the Project Board, I have been able to air my concerns behind the scenes. Residents of West Hove have not had this opportunity. The planning process itself, which is likely to start mid-2016 and conclude mid-2017, gives opportunity to comment but it is always better to start earlier, before an application is finalised. As Wish residents know, I certainly don’t shy away from listening to what the public has to say. Tell me on the bus. Stop me in the street. Write to me. Send me an email (robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk). Send me a telegram. I don’t mind. If I am going to represent your views on the biggest single-site development in Hove’s history, I need to know what you think. Robert Nemeth, Councillor for Wish ward

We are pleased to help promote this council campaign promoting road safety...

Road Safety: Focus, Look, Listen The road safety mantra for crossing the roads has been “Stop, Look, Listen” – from when we were in primary school. Failure to look properly is the biggest cause of collisions in the city – for all road users. Modern life gives us many distractions – mobile phones/devices and headphones. However, being human, we are often caught up in our thoughts and emotions when using the roads. Worries on what we have to do – or anger at what has happened in our lives – can mask our full attention from the road. Taking time to be aware of how we are feeling and accepting that – before we get on the roads – can help us focus on the roads when we are using them. Roads remain probably the riskiest environment we use each day – walking/cycling/driving or riding. The new “Focus, Look, Listen” campaign reminds all road users in the city that a clear focus on the roads allows you to look and listen effectively, able to make the best decisions. Join the discussion with stories and factors on the Facebook page: Share the Roads, Brighton & Hove.
