Welcome to the seventh edition of
Poets’ Pages!!!
Welcome to the May edition of Poets Pages. How quickly time goes by and suddenly we are publishing our 7th edition! The good news is that the publication has become established very quickly and as a result we aren’t going anywhere very soon and it looks like Poets Corner’s own local community magazine is here to stay! Amongst the different articles featuring this month is a review written by local resident, Roz Scott of Hungry Monkeys Thai Restaurant, also there is a report on the opening of The Hive just around the corner in Stoneham Park and also details of The Hove Luncheon Club that meets in the YMCA centre in Marmion Road. Have a great Festival! The Poets Pages Team info@poetspages.co.uk Cover shot: The cover photo was sent in by Tony Honess. Thank you Tony! Exciting News from the Friends of Stoneham Park...
The Hungry Monkey A pop-up restaurant and community resource in the heart of Poets’ Corner The Hungry Monkey is a versatile Thai business set up by entrepreneur Yoong, who teaches cookery to people of all ages and opens her space to the public at weekends for eat-in meals or take-aways. She introduces children to Asian ingredients during the week, and everyone who attends a class can eat whatever they cook. Yoong takes the Hungry Monkey into schools and nurseries to give toddlers a taste of her cooking in a familiar environment. Slightly older children aged 5-8 and 9+ come to the shop after school and she offers holiday clubs for teenagers. Children learn social skills and team work as they help each other and they also learn to clean. They say: ‘It’s not about the cooking; sometimes it’s about friendship and the kindness you never forget.’
These activities have attracted funding from Brighton & Hove City Council’s Inclusion grant. Parents pay £5 and people on a low income can benefit from free sessions. Some participants have mental health problems or disabilities but everyone is welcome and differences are celebrated. Yoong has won an award from Safety Net for excellent safety with children. Yoong also offers Thai cookery classes to adults from 7 to 9 pm on a Thursday. Every meal can be cooked from scratch in 40 minutes and costs £10 per session for 10 weeks (variations also available). The pop-up community restaurant offers meat, seafood, vegetarian platters and tofu. The full menu can be found on the Hungry Monkey website below. Of outstanding value is the £15 eat as much as you like ‘Banana Buffet’. You can sample starters, soup, salad and mains: an opportunity to experience the range of Yoong’s cuisine and bring your own bottle. I recommend the homemade House special chicken curry which was tender and aromatic. Catering for businesses and private parties is also available. Yoong has very recently been joined by Moon who is her assistant chef. On a Wednesday Kat offers ‘crafty monkey’ sessions, where children make toys out of recycled materials such as rubber gloves, neckties, chopsticks, jars, bottles and left-over wool and fabric. If you pop in to visit Yoong, you will see some of the arts and crafts on display. Yoong’s daughter chose the colour scheme in the venue. http://hungry-monkeys.com/

As we know most of the streets in Poets Corner got their names from historical poets . Here we uncover the names behind the names...
Who our Streets are named after...Sheridan Terrace
Richard Brinsley Sheridan 30 October 1751 - 7 July 1816 Sheridan was born in 1751 in Dublin, where his family had a house on thenfashionable Dorset Street. While in Dublin, Sheridan attended the English Grammar School in Grafton Street. The family moved permanently to England in 1758 when he was aged seven. He was a pupil at Harrow School outside London from 1762 to 1768. His mother, Frances Sheridan, was a playwright and novelist. After Harrow his father employed a private tutor, Lewis Ker, who directed his studies in his father's house in London, while Angelo instructed him in fencing and horsemanship. In 1772 Richard Sheridan fought a famous duel against Captain Thomas Mathews. Mathews had written a newspaper article defaming the character of Elizabeth Ann Linley, the woman Sheridan intended to

marry, and honour dictated that a duel must be fought. A first duel was fought in London where they agreed to fight in Hyde Park, but finding it too crowded they went first to the Hercules Pillars tavern (on the site where Apsley House now stands at Hyde Park Corner) and then on to the Castle Tavern in Henrietta Street, Covent Garden. Far from its romantic image, the duel was short and bloodless. Mathews lost his sword and, according to Sheridan, was forced to "beg for his life" and sign a retraction of the article. The apology was made public and Mathews, infuriated by the publicity the duel had received, refused to accept his defeat as final and challenged Sheridan to another duel. Sheridan was not obliged to accept this challenge, but would have become a social pariah if he had not. The second duel, fought in August 1772 at Kingsdown near Bath, was a much more ferocious affair. This time both men broke their swords but carried on fighting in a "desperate struggle for life and honour". Both were wounded, Sheridan dangerously, being "borne from the field with a portion of his antagonist's weapon sticking through an ear, his breast-bone touched, his whole body covered with wounds and blood, and his face nearly beaten to jelly with the hilt of Mathews' sword". Fortunately his remarkable constitution pulled him through, and eight days after this bloody affair the Bath Chronicle was able to announce that he was out of danger. Later in 1772, Richard Sheridan, at the age of 21, eloped with and subsequently married Elizabeth Ann Linley and set up house in London on a lavish scale with little money and no immediate prospects of any—other than his wife's dowry. The young couple entered the fashionable world and Sheridan began writing for the stage. Less than two years later, in 1775, his first play, The Rivals, was produced at London's Covent Garden Theatre. It was a failure on its first night. Sheridan cast a more capable actor for the role of the comic Irishman for its second performance, and it was a smash which immediately established the young playwright's reputation and the favour of fashionable London. It has gone on to become a standard of English literature. He went on to become one of the best known of all English playwrights and poets, as well as having a distinguished political career as a Member of Parliament.

We are delighted to report that the new community room in Stoneham Park is now open with the cafe to follow soon...
George Payne Street Party Saturday 3rd May 2014
Update on Stoneham Park Cafe The Hive!!
The George Payne Public House in Payne Avenue is celebrating 2 years since it opened under the guidance of Zoe Rodgers, with a Street Party on 2nd May 2014.
Last month we had news on the opening of the community room upstairs at The Hive - the new community cafe in the park.
Zoe bought the pub in 2012 when it was called the The Kendal arms and relaunched it as The George Payne. The party will celebrate an incredible first couple of years of the pub being part of the Poets Corner community which saw Zoe and her team achieving the national award of Best Turnaround Pub in Britain as well as having a local brewer create a beer in their honour Paynes Pride.
The good news is that the cafe is now partially open serving coffees and a limited food menu. Gemma and Lara are planning to have the cafe fully operating and with a full menu soon and next month we plan to bring you a full report on whats on offer. In the meantime pop along for a coffee, a snack and to check out the great cafe space that has been created. To enquire about booking space in the Community Room please contact Gemma on hive.roomhire@gmail.com
It promises to be a fun packed day starting in the street at noon where the party will continue until 8.30pm in the evening before moving into the pub for the rest of the merry making. We hope you have received the magazine in time to head down to the pub for a great day!!!

We love to feature regular events going on in Poets Corner. Please get in contact if you have something you would like to appear in Poets Pages...
Tuesdays at 12:00 in the YMCA, Marmion Street (term times)
Hove Luncheon Club Hove Luncheon Club has been running for 2 years as an independent lunch club for older people hosted by Sussex Central YMCA at Marmion road in Hove. It was originally run by AgeConcern and had been In existence for over eight years until the recession forced AgeConcern to withdraw their funding. The members were asked if they would like to set up their own committee and bank account and take things on themselves and an experienced community cookery worker Caroline Henderson was approached. Since then the club has gone from strength to strength increasing numbers and serving a three-course lunch every Tuesday during term time at 12:00. Hove Luncheon Club managed to secure a grant to provide much needed transport to older people who were unable to walk to the club and welcome any new members. A typical menu might include soup, toad in the hole with onion gravy and vegetables and perhaps
a fruit crumble with custard. We offer experience for volunteers both in the kitchen and front of house and members often have a chance to listen to guest speakers after lunch or play a few board games. Des our chairman is very friendly and Frances our secretary will welcome you and introduce you to a few people. For more information please contact Liz on 01273 731724

So many people this time of year come to me with the hope of shedding weight to prepare for their ‘beach body’, that I thought I’d dedicate a few issues of your Poets Pages to the topic of weight-loss. So let’s start with a couple of facts: Don’t diet. It’s quite simple and you know it: DIETS DON’T WORK. Not only do they not work, but they’ll also ruin your health by throwing your blood sugar out of balance and making your organs desperately try to keep you healthy on very few calories and low levels of essential nutrients. Avoid the diet trap by eating little and often. Don’t believe the bad publicity given to snacking, and kiss goodbye to the sugar cravings and yo-yo energy levels by eating small but nutrient-packed meals throughout the day. Keep your sugar cravings (and fear of starvation) at bay by eating fist-sized meals four to five times a day rather than three large meals. Include some protein, lots of vegetables, complex carbohydrates and essential good fats in each little meal, and eat every three hours or so. Beware: this requires a little organisation and planning, another must for healthy bodies and minds! More tips on how to reach your weight goals in the next issue – so watch this space. Nathalie x Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, mFNTP is a fully qualified nutritional therapist practising in various locations in Hove. She can be contacted by email: nathalie@ newleafnutrition.co.uk or on 07980 620010 for private consultations & painless and non-invasive food intolerance tests for adults and children. She also offers two-hour long gluten/dairy/sugar-free cookery classes at Varndean School, Brighton, every month. Next class is ‘Cooking for a beach body’ on 17th of May, 2-4pm. Visit www.newleafnutrition.co.uk/ cookery-courses/ for more details.

We love to feature local people...if you fancy featuring let us know at info@poetspages.co.uk...
Poets Person... Roz Scott What is your name and where in Poets’ Corner do you live? My name is Roz Scott and I live just north of Portland Road. How long have you lived in the area? I moved to Poets’ Corner two years ago. What do you most like about living in Poets’ Corner? I like the sense of community: I interviewed Debbie Bridge and we have become friends. I am getting to know other people locally. There are good shops and an excellent Thai takeaway, Mair Kim’s, which makes the best Pad Thai I have ever eaten. I may well do the Thai cookery course this year at the restaurant near Stoneham Park. I can walk into town, building exercise into my daily routine. What would you most like to see improved in the area? I am concerned about burglaries and low level crime. The area is up and coming so it will take time for it to become safer.
children succeed, and then monitored the effectiveness of this through the statement of SEN.
What you do for a living?
We notice you have written articles in Poets Pages in previous issues - do you have any future journalistic ambitions?
I work for Brighton & Hove City Council, supporting and challenging schools and colleges to improve their results and Ofsted grades.
I would love to do more writing, particularly about politics which is my passion. What is your greatest claim to fame?
What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
My most significant contribution to date is an Arms Trade paper I wrote, scrutinising Robin Cook's 'ethical dimension' to foreign policy. I wrote about the need to license small arms to prevent them getting into the wrong hands in areas of conflict. The paper contributed to UK legislation and is now going through the UN.
The best experience at the council was a secondment to the Special Educational Needs (SEN) team where I covered maternity leave. I worked with schools in a front-line capacity including the behavioural unit (Homewood). The work was fast-paced and profoundly worthwhile. I ensured that adequate support was put in place, either in mainstream or special schools, to help
