Welcome to the November edition of
Poets’ Pages!!! So here we go starting into our second year of the Poets’ Pages with another mix of local items for you. We hope you find something of interest this month. On page seven please find Simon and his vision for The Stoneham Bakehouse. We love this concept so please have a read and get involved if you can. Seems early but it isn’t really...we have news of the Friends of Stoneham Park Christmas Fair that will be here before you know it. To make sure you are up to speed on all that have a look at page 5. The West Hove Forum features on page 21 and is well worth looking at and getting involved with. We also have, amongst other things, a new recipe feature for children which should be fun on page 13 as well as a lot of the other usual items. Have a great November and be careful on Bonfire Night!! As sure as the sun rises in the east Christmas will be upon us before we know it...
Christmas Market in Stoneham Park Saturday 6th December, 2014 Picture the scene...A crisp winter’s day, clutching a warm, boozy hot chocolate whilst browsing festive market stalls, discovering presents for loved ones and irresistible treats for yourself! Meanwhile the children are prancing around to Christmas tunes, absorbed in winter crafts, having their little faces painted, or running off some excited energy whilst waiting for their turn to see Father Christmas! Sounds lovely, we know! This is the vision of Friends of Stoneham Park, who are organising a Christmas event this year, following the huge success of the big event that took place last autumn. Our Christmas Market will be held at Stoneham Park on Saturday 6th December, starting at midday and running through till 5pm.
WAKE UP TO A WOOD BURNER!
If you have an open fire, as much as 80% of the heat goes straight up the chimney. With a wood burning stove you’ll benefit from at least three times more heat. So you’ll just be burning wood - the original carbon neutral fuel - not money. Be part of the renewable revolution. Energy Wake Up specialises in the supply and installation of energy-efficient wood burning stoves. From consultation to installation.

The park will be bursting with activities and entertainment to satisfy all of the family, and cater for all the senses. Kick back in the warmth of the popular community café, The Hive. Their full festive menu, delicious seasonal specials and boozy treats will be on offer to tantalise the taste buds as ever! In addition there will be a variety of stalls selling hot tasty fare, local ales, punch or winter Pimm’s (courtesy of The George Payne) and hot roasted chestnuts. There’ll be plenty of music too! Carol singers, a brass band, plus live performers dotted round the park, playing festive songs with a set of popular Christmas tunes spun by the ever-popular local DJ and radio presenter, Elle J Small. The local preschool, Happitots, will also be performing their Nativity Play! The children will be delighted with pony rides, a festive story teller, festive face painting, and craft tents. There will also be a Santa’s Grotto, with ticketed slots so that families don’t spend the whole afternoon in a queue! We want to appeal to all members of the community, and are encouraging local small businesses and sole traders to offer quality goods for sale in the designated stall area within the park. If you have beautiful crafts, cards, jewellery, clothing or similar, and would be interested in having a stall, please email friends.of.stoneham.park@gmail.com - fao Emily. So please, come on down, meet up with the rest of your community and enjoy the fun and all your park has to offer! We really look forward to seeing you all there! With love, Friends of Stoneham Park

Read the story of a local resident with a unique community project...
The Stoneham Bakehouse
My name is Simon Cobb and I’m on a journey to set up a Community Supported Bakery in the heart of Poets’ Corner. The Stoneham Bakehouse will bake Real Bread for the community, by members of the community, to benefit the community. Stoneham Bakehouse will use community volunteers to support me in baking: learning traditional techniques, gaining work experience, and benefiting from the therapeutic effect of working with dough. It will also aim to promote intergenerational interaction, bringing disparate parts of the community together. As a Community Interest Company it will also put profits, after wages and expenses, back into the project, so that everyone can

benefit. Young or old, affluent or disadvantaged, we will bake with each other and bring the bread oven back to the centre of the community. The project is a big one, with lots to do before we can be baking and serving the community. We’ve found a potential venue, next to Hungry Monkey on Stoneham Road, and now need to see what adaptations the site will require to transform it into a small bakehouse. Amazingly, we’ve discovered that both 2a and 2 (Hungry Monkey) Stoneham Road were once a baker’s shop. You may remember the days when Clark’s Bakers had their shop there and the large sign was on the wall of the adjoining property. Poets’ Corner used to have shops on most corners, whether butcher, baker, or I suppose candlestick maker. Won’t it be great to return one of these to the area, and at the same time develop the sense of community? I really want the business to meet the needs of, and involve, the community. It’s important to me to gather opinions of the project from the residents of Poets’ Corner. I’ll be having a stall at the Stoneham Park Christmas Market on 6th December. Why not come along and try some bread, and have a chat. I’d love to know what you think, whether you’d like to bake with us, or if you can support the project in another way. I’m also collecting opinions at the moment; so if you have access to the internet you can complete this survey https://www. surveymonkey.com/s/XTXHH2Q and have a chance to voice your opinions. If you want any further information, the Stoneham Bakehouse project is on Twitter: @stonehambake and Facebook page:htttp://www.facebook.com/stonehambakehouse. Poets’ Corner Past... Sackville Road Bridge Last month we showed a photo of the old railway bridge in Sackville Road that was too low for horse-drawn carriages to go beyond. Moving forward to the 50s, as a condition of making a grant towards the cost of the new bridge, the Ministry of Transport stipulated that the level of the roadway must be lowered by 12 inches to provide minimum headroom of 16 feet. After the remains of the old brick bridge had been removed this work was put in hand, as seen in this photograph. The promised camber of the old roadway was flattened out.

The first in a series of recipes for children...
Cookery Doodle Doo
Jess is a teacher from Cookery Doodle Doo, who organise children’s cookery classes and parties across the UK. With lessons on everything from edible Flowerpot Cheesecakes to healthy homecooked meals, there is always a fun new activity for the children to get stuck into.
Jess runs preschool and afterschool classes at Pelican on Portland, a great new café on Portland Road. The classes are suitable for fussy eaters and messy bakers alike and, after preparing the food, parents get a chance to relax in the café as the food cooks and the children use the playroom.
Firework Truffles
Preschool classes (ages 2½ to 4) run on Mondays from 1011.30am and 1-2.30pm, Tuesdays 10-11.30am. Classes are £7 per child or £12 for two siblings, including a recipe card to take away. Reductions apply for people who book a half term course. Afterschool club (age 3-10; school-aged children can be left during the food preparation) runs on Mondays from 3.30-5pm. Classes are booked as half termly courses at £7 per child per lesson. Children can try a paid taster class before committing. Classes can be booked online at www.cookerydoodledoo. com or through Jess on 07970 997 224.

Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti
Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP
Easy, Energy-Packed, Delicious Breakfast Ideas In my last article, I explained why breakfast is so important for preventing chronic illnesses, helping with weight issues and boosting mental and physical alertness. To feel fuller for longer and really improve focus, energy and general sense of wellbeing, always include a wholegrain, good fats and some protein in your breakfast feast. Here are some easy and delicious recipes to kick start a healthy, energy-packed day: Super-rich muesli: oats (or other gluten-free flakes: quinoa, millet, buckwheat, rice) + 1 tbsp raw unsalted nuts + 1 tbsp seeds (chia, linseeds, sunflower, pumpkin, sesame…) + 1 tbsp desiccated coconut + 1 tbsp goji berries – eat with your favourite milk or plain yogurt – add a cut-up date or fresh blueberries or 1 tsp of raw honey (optional). Go go smoothie: ½ glass of almond/rice/coconut milk (or plain live organic yogurt) + 1 handful of kale + 1 handful of fresh berries + 1 tbsp seeds + 1 tbsp desiccated coconut. Blend thoroughly.
Energy-rich scramble: Eggs + kale + fresh/dried herbs scrambled on top of almond-buttered wholemeal wheat/rye toast. Quinoa porridge: substitute oats with quinoa (always rinsed) and cook with your favourite milk. Add a tsp of cinnamon, a handful of raw unsalted nuts, seeds and blueberries and a tsp of raw unpasteurised honey (optional). Enjoy! Nathalie x

Here is a local opportunity to get involved with helping others for a few hours on Christmas Day...
Do you have plans for Christmas Day?... Hove Methodist Church will be hosting a lunch for all those who would otherwise be on their own on Christmas Day, so if you will be on your own contact us on the number below. We have, for about 40 years, invited anyone, who might otherwise be on their own, to share in a free Christmas Day celebration, including lunch and entertainment, and we also aim to provide transport for most of the guests. This is the biggest event of our calendar in terms of outreach to the community. Last year around 100 people were fed, including guests and helpers. The lunch involves a lot of work, mainly on the day but also beforehand, and on Christmas Eve. We are fortunate to receive a good number of volunteers from outside of our church. Please do, therefore, give prayerful thought to lending a hand, whether for setting tables, welcoming, waiting at table, serving, taking coats, entertaining, washing-up or clearing the hall afterwards, or transporting some of our guests either to or from the church. We would really like to hear from you. Please contact the church office (01273 324600) about any help you may be able to offer.
Even an hour from each person could make a big difference, if enough join in, and would make it easier for everyone else. This is a great day for the whole church family and those who have helped before have said how much they have enjoyed it. We will be very glad to have you alongside and believe you will enjoy it too. With many thanks, Terry Pomfrey (Hove Methodist Church)

We are delighted to feature The West Hove Forum this issue. Please have a read...
New Members Wanted for the West Hove Forum What is the West Hove Forum? The West Hove Forum was set up in 2005 and was formerly known as the Portland Road and Clarendon Forum. At the West Hove Forum, community representatives can come together to identify issues affecting West Hove and work together to tackle them. Meetings are held every two months, in West Hove venues. The forum covers part of Goldsmid ward and all of Wish and Westbourne wards. It can influence decisions and priorities, and it oversees funded projects. This year the WHF has received £4,000 from the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund for community health and wellbeing projects and activities. Groups can apply for up to £500 of this funding and a panel decides how to spend the money. The forum can also discuss what to do with Section 106 developer contributions from new developments in the area. At every meeting there is a neighbourhood policing report by local PCSOs and local policing priorities are set. Policing issues discussed at the last meeting, in Septem-

ber, included street drinkers in Boundary Road and car dealing in Portland Road. Current community policing priorities are: 1. Bike security awareness 2. Crime prevention – scams 3. Burglary 4. Parking outside schools. There is usually a Round Robin, so that every attendee has an opportunity to raise areas of concern or to inform other members about what their group has been doing. Some other issues raised at recent meetings are cannabis use in Stoneham Park and parking problems.
Who can attend? The WHF is attended by representatives of residents’ associations such as the Ingram Crescent Residents’ Association, the Bolsover Road Residents’ Association, the Wish Park Residents’ Association and the Kingsway And West Hove Residents’ Association. It is also attended by service providers such as members of the local community policing team, park rangers and the council’s Safe in the City team. Other members include community volunteers, groups such as the Friends of Stoneham Park, representatives of religious communities, local businesses such as Bungard & Sons, and ward councillors. Local councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn says that he values the meetings and goes there to listen. The Trust for Developing Communities provides assistance to the committee. We would love new members to come along - particularly representatives of local businesses, professionals and residents’ associations. We are always looking for new volunteers for the committee. So, if you are interested in helping to organise local events or meetings, or helping with our publicity through newsletter articles or social media, please get in touch. In return, you can learn new skills like IT or social media, or learn about how a local committee works and how the council services work.

“We’ve had our flu jab.”
Frveeryeone
for e 5 aged 6 r e and ov
Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.
Ask your GP about the free flu jab.
