Welcome to Poets Pages... Welcome to our November Poets Pages and we hope you managed to get past Halloween without getting too frightened!! So what have we for you this month? We have an article on the Hove Luncheon Club if you are over 55 and fancy getting out and meeting other people who you might not otherwise get to know. We also have a page of local fireworks displays that you might like to attend as well as all the usual What’s On pages. Add to that a feature on the local Christmas Open Houses in Poets Corner as well as a chance to win a family ticket to this year’s panto and we hope you can find at least a few things of interest to you. In the meantime have a great November! Poets Pages Team info@poetspages.co.uk Cover: James O’Sullivan. Send your photos to info@poetspages.co.uk Publisher: Sussex Magazines Ltd. Meet a Poets’ Corner resident and local TV writer who has a book out this month...…
Poets Person – Sue Teddern Sue Teddern of Suffolk Street has written for TV and radio for over 20 years. Her credits include Birds of a Feather (BBC), Homefront (ITV), soloparentpals.com and The Archers (BBC Radio 4). She has just co-written a book called “Writing for TV and Radio”. How long have you lived in Poets’ Corner? It’ll be three years next April. What do you like about the area? I love the shops on Portland Road; everything you need from nuts and bolts to nuts and seeds…and both shops side by side too! We often pop into The George Payne or Ancient Mariner when we don’t feel like cooking. Stoneham Park is a terrific community resource, plus it’s just two minutes from the house. The Hive offers great soups and sandwiches and I love the way Lara and Col have made the place such a valued and cosy neighbourhood resource. What is the script you are most proud of? When you finish the first draft of anything, you can’t help patting yourself on the back! Phew, you did it!
And then the slog and stress begin as you rewrite it until it works. I wrote a radio play in 2006 called Sad Girl, about a woman trying to find a painting that had been stolen from her family by the Nazis. That was an important one for me. We hear you run writing courses... I’m part of a group called Beach Hut Writers and some of us have got together to offer courses to writers who need to recharge their batteries or may be starting from scratch. I’m co-tutoring a course in January with Brighton writer Hannah Vincent. www.facebook.com/beachhutwritingacademy Tell us more about your book... It’s the seventh in a series of eight ‘how-to’ books on writing. Part one looks at the nature of TV and radio; part two features 20 essays by working writers and part three gives practical advice on dialogue, structure, rewriting, etc. Part two is a really good read. My job was to commission the ten TV writers. So we feature reflections and tips by writers of Borgen, House of Cards, Peep Show, Coronation Street, Doctor Who, Veep, Marvellous and many more. “Writing for TV and Radio: a writers’ and artists’ companion”, by Sue Teddern and Nick Warburton, is published by Bloomsbury on 19th November.

If you want to get out and meet people locally why not try the Hove Luncheon Club...
Hove Luncheon Club Hove Luncheon Club is a friendly lunch club for older people based at Hove Methodist Church. We believe that food tastes better when shared and it’s a real pleasure to cook a meal every week for people who you know have been looking forward to coming all week. We don’t manage to please all the people all the time but we generally receive lots more compliments than criticisms! We meet every Tuesday during term time between 12:30 and 2:30pm and a three-course meal with transport currently costs £2 thanks to funding from the People’s Health Trust and the Sussex Community Foundation. Our members are varied and aged from 55 to 95 from around the Poets’ Corner area and as far afield as Hangleton and Mile Oak. We hire two buses with drivers from Brighton and Hove Community Transport to collect people for whom a bus journey is unmanageable. We have a fantastic committee, made up of members including Des our chairman, which meets regularly. Our volunteers are really at the heart of the organisation. They help with food preparation, setting up tables,

serving food, clearing up and often just sitting and chatting to members. Peter is our resident poet and also in charge of the music (although we did veto the pan pipes a few weeks ago). We subscribe to the food charity FareShare, who redistribute food donated by supermarkets. We received some amazing items last week including tomatoes, ham, parmesan, mushrooms, orange juice and Alien birthday cakes! It’s my job as co-ordinator to turn the food into a three-course meal so it’s a bit like Ready Steady Cook on a grander scale. We have after-lunch activities regularly – last week we had Jo doing massage. Some of the members had never tried one before and enjoyed it. In a few weeks we have a visit from a local historian to talk about the Great British seaside holiday with handling objects. We are also looking forward to our Christmas buffet with Christmas cakes and singing, held upstairs at Hove Methodist Church on 16th December. This year we are hoping that some members from the Brighton Festival Chorus will be able to sing for us. If anyone is interested in finding out more about the club you can have a look at our Facebook page on www.facebook.com/hoveluncheonclub or call Caroline Henderson on 01273 728678.

Views of Brighton & Hove in the Early 19th Century There is one month left to see an exhibition of prints and drawings of early 19th century Brighton & Hove at Brighton Museum. The exhibition shows how Brighton developed into a fashionable seaside resort. There are pictures of past attractions such as the Chain Pier and the Royal Brighton Gardens, other grand projects which were never begun, and buildings which have
survived to the present day, such as a lithograph of the Royal Sussex County Hospital from 1841. Pictured above is The Anthaeum. Kate Elms, of The Royal Pavilion & Museums, writes: “In the summer of 1833, an unnamed artist settled down to sketch an ambitious new building that was nearing completion on a piece of land north of Adelaide Crescent in Hove.

Artists’ impressions such as this ink and wash drawing provide a visual record of life before the development of photography, and this example was particularly timely. Just a few weeks later - at the end of August 1833 – this vast iron and glass structure lay in ruins. “The Anthaeum, as it was known, was the brainchild of local botanist Henry Phillips. He envisaged a horticultural Eden, complete with exotic trees and birds, a lake and a rocky hill. Designed by architect AH Wilds and engineer C Hollis, it was to be a domed glasshouse measuring over 65 feet high and 165 feet in diameter. It was a huge logistical project for the 1830s: the structure was formed from around 500 tons of iron, which was shipped into Shoreham Harbour and then dragged to the site by teams of horses. “The construction was fraught with difficulties and further hampered by professional disagreements. Wilds and Hollis argued that the dome needed a central, supporting pillar, but, faced with resistance from the contractor, both architect and engineer abandoned the job. This proved disastrous. Before Phillips had sought further advice, the contractor removed the temporary support and, on 30 August 1833, the Anthaeum collapsed.
Cycle Prints from £40.00 Excellent gifts for all cycle enthusiasts!

“Hundreds of people came to view the tangled remains, which stayed where they fell for another 20 years. They became an odd tourist attraction in their own right until they were eventually removed for the development of Palmeira Square.” The exhibition is on until 13th December at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in the Royal Pavilion garden (closed on Mondays) and is free with Brighton Museum admission. Here is a chance to win tickets to the local panto....
Win tickets for Jack and the Beanstalk Monday 22nd Dec 2015 to Saturday 2nd Jan 2016 Music Theatre 2000 and Showtime Productions are proud to bring to the Windmill Theatre a traditional musical pantomime for all the family to enjoy. Packed full of toe-tapping tunes, amazing dance routines, hilarious comedy and fantastic audience participation – this is a show that’s simply not to be missed! Down on their luck, Jack and his mum can barely afford the rent – to make matters worse, the whole town is being terrorised by the evil giant. When Jack is tricked into selling the family cow for a handful of magic beans – and returns home to the furious Dame Trott – their madcap adventure at the top of the beanstalk begins. Will Jack slay the Giant? Will he rescue the girl of his dreams? There’s only one way to find out and that’s to join us on the adventure this Christmas! The show is directed by Nathan Potter and Simon Gray, and features a full company of actors, singers and dancers accompanied by a five-piece band. Jack and the Beanstalk is supporting the Chestnut Tree House Children’s Hospice - the only children’s hospice in Sussex caring for children and young people with lifeshortening illness. It costs over £3 million per year to provide these services. The hospice receives less than 8% of that figure from central government funding, so without the support of the community to raise the balance there would be serious funding issues. You can get tickets at www.jackandthebeanstalkbton.com or call the box office on 01273 565130. Tickets cost from £12.50 to £20. Venue: The Windmill Theatre, Nevill Avenue, Hove COMPETITION: We have one prize of four tickets to give away. To enter, answer the following question: What musical instrument did Jack take from the giant’s house? Email your answer to info@poetspages.co.uk or post your answer, name, address and phone number to Jack & The Beanstalk competition, Sussex Magazines, 10 Hollingbury Road, Brighton BN1 7JA. The winner will be selected at random after the closing date. Competition Terms & Conditions Tickets are valid to see Jack & The Beanstalk at The Windmill Theatre on a date of your choice, subject to availability. Tickets are non-exchangeable. Closing date for entries is 20th November; entries received after this date will not be counted.
