Welcome to Poets Pages... The days are getting shorter and pre-Christmas events are already fast approaching, including the Christmas Artists Open Houses festival, which starts on 23rd November. There’s also a Christmas Gift Fair at West Blatchington Windmill on 30th November – another great place to start your Christmas shopping. Our featured local person this month is Stephen Down, a writer who’s just moved to Poets Corner but is still commuting to London and has written a book about his adventures on the tube. We also have another fascinating local history article from Rachel Bridgeman about the important role of Caldra House, now Skerritts, in Coleridge Street for the British Polish community. Have a great November! The Poets Pages Team info@poetspages.co.uk www.poetspages.co.uk Cover picture: Portland Road by Jane Galvin Publisher: Sussex Magazines Ltd. News from the Friends of Stoneham Park…
The scent of autumn in Stoneham Park The weather has turned distinctly colder and wetter. The nights are longer, the mornings darker. If you look close enough, other more subtle changes are detectable. Spider’s webs are suddenly everywhere. Fungi sprout up from the stumps of rotten trees. Squirrels are spotted on garden walls and in parks. pouring rain half the day. But the fair still went ahead, undaunted. Once again, we will have stalls inside the Holy Cross Church hall and in the park, a fabulous Santa’s grotto in the room above the Snug, live music, street food and the all-important mulled wine to warm your hands as you take in the festive atmosphere. In the next couple of weeks, look out for our prize draw tickets on sale in local shops and businesses. We had some fabulous prizes raffled in our summer fair, and we will have some equally fantastic offerings this time. Once again, and I make no apologies for sounding like a stuck record, we desperately need some handson help on the day. Please get in touch with us at friendsofstonehampark@gmail.com: you won’t regret it! Richard Hearnden
Autumn has come and its presence is here for us all to see, to feel and to smell. Yes, to smell. Because, just as we have always suspected, you can actually smell autumn. It can be quite noticeable on a mild evening. I noticed a slightly sweet aroma in the air around Stoneham Park: it was ever-so-slightly woody and smoky. This scent isn’t attributable to smoke but to chemical changes taking place as trees shed their leaves. Organic chemical compounds called terpenes and isoprenoids, a sort of essential oil, are released through the microscopic pores in the surface of leaves as they die. Combined with the whiff of decomposing plant matter and complex atmospheric shifts, your nose sniffs what your eyes see: the change in the seasons. This month, take a look in Stoneham Park’s wildlife among the shrubs and the trees, beyond the ubiquitous seagulls. Spiders, squirrels, fungi are all there and a real education. Like the scent of the season, you will notice it if you try hard enough. We always put a big effort into our festivals. The brilliant Halloween festival has just passed, after we went to press. Next, we have our Christmas Market on Saturday 7 December between 11am and 3pm. Please put it in your diaries. Last year the weather was dreadful, with

Meet a writer who’s just moved to Poets Corner...
Local author...Stephen Down We sit down with local author Stephen Down to chat moving to Poets Corner, seagulls and surviving the London commute. How long have you lived in Poets Corner? I moved this summer with my wife, two-year-old son and our crazy cat. I’m originally from Horsham and my wife from Patcham. After nearly 10 years in the big city, we’ve ventured back to good old Sussex by the Sea so our fish and chips can be nicked by seagulls. Why did you decide to move? Why not? The local community, shops, pubs, parks and of course the beach… So many reasons why we already love living in Poets Corner. Plus, I’m a massive Brighton & Hove Albion fan. Seagulls! So, you’ve written a book? Incredibly, yes. Although you could describe it more as a catalogue of musings from the underground. In the end, I called it “Commuting: An Underground World”.
Check it out. Here’s the synopsis: Commute to work? Probably. Love the daily slog of train delays, overcrowding and sweaty armpits? Unlikely. Jump on board, find that inch of personal space and dig into a wholeheartedly honest account of funny, bizarre and captivating occurrences on the London Underground. The book is an amusing portrayal of commuting in London, covering everything from awkward situations (the pregnant guessing game) and unbelievable altercations (violence and racism), to downright comedic events (number two on the tube? Yes. Really.). What’s the funniest thing you’ve seen on the tube? Tough question. There are so many funny moments, which can all be read in the book, but if I had to pick one, I’d say the chapter entitled “Carrot and Bean Casserole”. A graphic story, but here’s a clean summary - a man needed the toilet while stuck on a delayed tube train. Enough said, or is it? Truly terrifying. I still have nightmares. Are you still commuting? Unfortunately, yes. I leave the house at 6am (much to the dismay of my wife), venturing onto the 6:32 from Hove to London Bridge. I then work my way on the underground to Canary Wharf, so I’m still lucky enough (not!) to be using the tube every day. Request to work from home submitted. Farewell to the big smoke - hello to a more picture-perfect Poets Corner life. “Commuting: An Underground World” by Stephen Down is available from Amazon. Follow him on Instagram for more wacky commuter adventures — @Downontheunderground.

Start your Christmas shopping at West Blatchington Windmill...
Artists Open Houses Christmas Festival
Christmas Gift Fair Saturday 30 November 2019, 11am-4pm, West Blatchington Windmill North Barn
This year’s Artists Open Houses Christmas Festival runs every weekend from 23rd November to 8th December. There will be a hugely diverse selection of artwork, ceramics, homewares, crafts, jewellery, children’s toys, Christmas cards and foodie gifts on offer. Many of the houses also offer mince pies and mulled wine to ease you into your Christmas shopping! The Christmas Artists Open Houses festival provides a fantastic opportunity to shop away from the high street and buy unique Christmas gifts in an inspiring environment. Some of the highlights of the 2019 Christmas festival include Urban Graffiti, which will see 40 top international graffiti artists, including Pure Evil, Cosmo Sarson and Xens, create a subversive miniature city – a model village like you’ve never seen before! Highly acclaimed Brighton photographer JJ Waller, whose pictures shine a light on the unique characters and flavour of life in Brighton, will be exhibiting as a solo artist for the first time at the Artists Open Houses festival. At Villa Lucia’s Emporium (11B Goldstone Villas), you can find an emporium of treasures and treats at a secret garden flat in Hove. You can shop original up-cycled clothing, headwear, hats, headdresses and road-kill taxidermy, plus art, textiles, upholstery and jewellery with plenty of Christmas gift ideas. For more information on all the open houses, visit www.aoh.org. uk from 13th November.
This is the second year of the Christmas Gift Fair at West Blatchington Windmill (191 Holmes Avenue, BN3 7LH), to raise the profile of the 190-year-old windmill which has been restored and open to the public for 40 years. Last year visitors commented on the friendly and relaxing atmosphere and the quality of gifts on offer. There will be a good variety of stalls selling button art, Brighton-themed board games, gemstone and crystal pendants, pottery and papercraft, embroidered and embellished textile gifts, book art and gifts, watercolours, mosaics, personalised Christmas ornaments, candles, and knitted and crocheted gifts, plus a range of windmill souvenirs. There will also be Christmas-themed refreshments. For more details visit: www.westblatchingtonwindmill.org or: https://www.facebook.com/ events/433444467265840/

A NEW TYPE OF DINER
We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.
Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.
Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

News from Wish ward councillor Robert Nemeth...
Councillor News... The news in October that yet another King Alfred Leisure Centre deal has collapsed came as no surprise to me and Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn – but, trying to be as positive about it as possible, we see the sad news as a chance to now do things properly. Looking back, the commencement of the project in 2012 would have been a wonderful opportunity to ask the public what they wanted. Instead, a leisure specification from 2003 went through on the nod and an unpopular design was picked in secret. Transparency is paramount. Sport has changed so much since 2003. Not only has an Olympic Games been hosted in this country since then, we’ve seen the explosion of parkrun, CrossFit, and Ironman. Locally, there’s now the Brighton Marathon and Brighton Triathlon. The Amex Stadium has opened, Saltdean Lido has reopened and Sea Lanes isn’t too far off. Trends have changed so the specification must be reviewed. Rather than three separate small pools, a new leisure centre in Hove should undoubtedly feature a flexible 50m pool with moveable floors and adjustable booms.
CHRISTMAS FAIR 30th November 2019 Central United Reformed Church Blatchington Road Hove 10am-1pm
Coffees, lunches. Stalls:
Cakes • Books • Gifts • Toiletries Jewellery • “Men in Sheds” • Toys Tombola • Raffle
Such an arrangement costs less and can do more. Getting a 50m pool for Hove and Portslade is a huge priority for me as Parliamentary Candidate. Not having one is letting down local kids in a big way. More generally, a new development should be about sport first and foremost. The Council seems to view the site as a potential housing estate with sports below as an added extra. It should be all about sport though with just enough enabling development to pay for it. Other sites for a sports centre are now being looked at which I think is a huge mistake. Worthing’s Splash Point works incredibly well on the seafront. Our sports centre should stay put. In terms of deal structure, the last attempt was clearly a disaster. Crest Nicholson, when picked as developer, were able to keep the city on the line for three years without paying any sort of deposit or paying any fines. This is wrong. A deposit must be taken as soon as a buyer, partner or developer is picked. Finally, not only are the public being messed around, so are existing King Alfred clubs and tenants. Garry and I would like to see assurances given that the Shiverers, Marlins, Cheetahs, boxing and kickboxing gyms, and all of the other clubs and tenants, are given a proper voice in the process – whatever form it takes and whenever it happens. Cllr Robert Nemeth Wish Ward

Local history from Rachel Bridgeman...
Solidarity with Poland from Poets Corner In September 1939, the double occupation of Poland by the German Third Reich and the Soviet Red Army began. The Polish Government-in-Exile moved to London and the Polish Armed Forces continued their fight from Britain: their pilots amongst “The Few” during the Battle of Britain and Polish soldiers leaving these shores on D-Day. In 1945, when the charred remains of Photo of Caldra House Poland became separated from the free (now Skerritts) courtesy of world by the “iron curtain”, many Poles Mr Filipowicz-Phillips chose to remain in exile in the UK. (former Managing Director) For over 70 years, the British Polish diaspora would rely on the newspapers Dziennik Polski i Dziennik Żołnierza (Polish daily & Soldiers’ daily) from 1940 and Tydzień Polski (Polish Weekly) from 1959 to keep in touch and to read about events in their homeland and from around the world. With its editorial in London, from 1953 its printing press (and Weekly editorial) was at Caldra House, 23 Coleridge Street, Hove (in the former Catholic school). From Poets Corner, news was disseminated of the unimaginable atrocities of the Second World War – the extermination of Polish Jews; one-fifth bloodless revolution, paved the way to the fall of the of Poland’s citizens killed; slave labour; the destruction Berlin Wall, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the end of cities, towns, and villages. of the Cold War. An appeal to help people in fuel poverty...
Brighton Lions Club Project Wenceslas
An event in support of homeless people...
Brighton Lions Club are once again launching Project Wenceslas, a campaign to help combat fuel poverty. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions.
Big Sleep Out at Hove Lagoon
Excess winter deaths in Brighton & Hove are slightly higher than both England and the South-East.
The World’s Big Sleep Out is taking place on 7th December at venues across the globe.
People in difficulty will be contacting agencies such as Age UK who will refer them to Brighton Lions. Direct applications will not be accepted to ensure all the donated money goes to the people who really need it. Brighton Lions will make payments direct to the energy supply companies, not the individual beneficiaries, whose details will not be known to the Lions.
50,000 people will sleep outside in 50 cities to call for an end to global homelessness and to raise money for charities helping homeless or displaced people. Participants around the world will include actors Will Smith and Helen Mirren. Brighton’s event will be at Hove Lagoon, where money will be raised for charities including Sussex Homeless Support.
“Last winter we spent more than £9,000,” said Pete Dilloway, President of Brighton Lions Club. “That was an increase of £1,000 on the previous year so there really is a need even in this, the so-called affluent South-East. One of those we helped last winter had been admitted to hospital with hypothermia having been too scared of running up bills to use enough heating.” Donations can be made by credit/debit cards through Brighton Lions Club’s website at www.brightonlions.org.uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Wenceslas should be sent to Brighton Lions Club, c/o 9 Westfield Crescent, Brighton, BN1 8JB. People sending cheques are asked to confirm that their donations may be treated as Gift Aid so that the value of the donation can be increased by 25%.
You can register to take part at: www.bigsleepout.com/join-asleep-out/brighton Answer to “Where in Poets Corner?” on page 15 Picture 1: Arthur Street Picture 2: Westbourne Street Picture 3: The Ancient Mariner

This article is from local charity Together Co Befriending...
Can you spare an hour to make someone’s week? Before her health deteriorated, Linda travelled the world and worked as a letting agent and holistic therapist. Since her disabilities developed, she can only leave the house once a week with assistance. A visit from Rebecca, a Together Co Befriending volunteer, makes a huge difference to Linda’s week. Linda: “When I became housebound, my friendships slowly dissolved as we had less and less in common. My befriending volunteer, Bex, is great. She is the only person I see socially. My carers visit daily to help me with my daily routine, but there’s no time to chat. Together Co match you with someone who shares your interests. Even an hour a week of friendliness can make a lot of difference to my life.”
A concert in aid of Martlets hospice...
Dreaming of a musical Christmas The Martlets Good Vibrations Choir will be bringing tuneful Christmas cheer to Hove Methodist Church on Saturday 30th November.
Rebecca and Linda
Bex: “Popping round to Linda’s for a cup of tea and a catch-up is something I know we both look forward to each week. It’s a mutually beneficial connection.” About Together Co Befriending Everybody should have somebody. We match people with people to create friendships that make life better. We’ve been doing so for over 20 years. In that time, we’ve seen loneliness eased and lives changed – all through the simple power of human connection. Please get in touch if you can spare an hour a week to visit a neighbour. Call us on 01273 775888 or email: sally.clarke@togetherco.org.uk
The members include hospice patients, family members, staff and volunteers who sing under the musical direction of local singer and voice coach Aneesa Chaudhry. The choir will be singing songs from Les Misérables and the classics, along with a sprinkle of festive tunes. There will be tea and cake, plus a prize raffle. Doors open at 3pm for a 3.30pm start. Tickets are £10/£8 concs and children are free; book online at www.themartlets.org.uk/events, email ann.borg@martlets.org.uk or telephone 01273 273400 ext 746. A bereavement allotment group for men...
Martlets Earthworks First 12-week Open Access Course starting the week of 4 November 2019 Earthworks is a space for bereaved men to meet and get together to grow, harvest, tend and maintain Martlets’ new allotment. Throughout the year Martlets will be offering sessions on mornings, afternoons, evenings and on a Saturday. Previous gardening experience is not required and attendees are free to take on whatever jobs interest them, be it lighter work pricking out seedlings or getting stuck into digging and clearing. The Earthworks course will run for 12 weeks and is ‘Open Access’, meaning that any bereaved man in Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas is welcome to attend; you do not have to have a previous connection with Martlets. The Earthworks counsellor will provide a welcoming and supportive environment in which to work and the session starts with a cuppa in the allotment shed around the wood burner. Sharing experiences of loss while working with the natural cycle of life through the seasons can be a positive and healing experience. For more information, please contact Martlets’ Patient and Family Support Administrator on 01273 273400, or email bereavement@martlets.org.uk. www.themartlets.org.uk

Consultation on Graffiti Brighton & Hove City Council have launched a public consultation on their proposals to tackle graffiti and tagging. At present the council are only responsible for removing graffiti from their own buildings and other equipment they own like bins and lamp posts. They are not responsible for removing anything on private property or land, unless it’s offensive. Councillor Anne Pissaridou, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport & Sustainability committee, is urging people to complete the consultation. She also acknowledged that the council needs to clean up its own buildings and equipment. She said: “Some of the consultation is quite controversial as we’re asking people if they think businesses, private homeowners and landlords should remove graffiti from their buildings or pay the council to do so.” The consultation is open until 15 December. You can find it at: https://consultations.brighton-hove.gov. uk/rubbish-recycling-and-streets/graffiti-removalenforcement-consultation/

A local resident sent us this poem remembering her great-aunt’s home in Ruskin Road...
Poem...The Pantry Our friends are enjoying cheese and pineapple truffles and plonk And asking about the disconnection whilst getting wonderfully drunk. “The fridge freezer was getting to be over the hill And we thought ‘pantry’ thus cutting down on the bill.” Our friends’ curiosity was heightened, cocktail sticks poised in the air. “Show us,” they cried, “this is something in which we can share.” “Then follow us,” and into the kitchen we bundled where anticipation grew.
And above them stood bottled fruits of the hedgerow, Elderflower champagne and gin from the sloe, Along with lemon curd, a loaf of wholemeal bread, Cottage cheese, peanut butter and, always, pickled eggs.
“This is it and for donkey’s years it was once the outside loo.” Back slid the pantry’s bifold door, on came its electric light Showing a small window, four shelves and walls of tiles white. Homemade produce was displayed to the happy band From our garden’s bushes were jars of blackcurrant and gooseberry jam
And the memory came of Great Aunt Rose Of her pantry, the first I saw, at her house in Ruskin Road. On Sundays, taking pride of place, her cake of caraway seeds And a milk jug, doily draped, fringed with coloured beads, For that ritual, high tea in the afternoon, ToONE be sipped with NAME Typhoo and sugar and stirred with ROOF ONE apostle spoons. ONE ROOF But back toONE oursNAME where there is anarchy against the grid.
