Welcome to the twelfth edition of

Poets’ Pages!!! Horrible to have to admit, but I think it is now indisputable that summer has indeed passed and that we are now in autumn. Autumn isn’t so bad however...the colours are amazing and you can’t beat those fresh autumnal mornings. So what have we for you this month? Well, we actually have a bit of an expanded magazine for you!! We have had to add four pages more than usual to accommodate the articles that we have received from the Poets’ Corner community this past month. We are delighted about this as it’s your articles that make Poets Pages what it is, so please don’t stop but keep them coming! Our only criteria are that the article is about something happening in or near to Poets’ Corner or is about something that a local Poets’ Corner resident is involved in. So, enjoy the season and watch out for all the ghosts and ghouls at the end of the month! The Poets Pages team info@poetspages.co.uk Publisher: Sussex Magazines Ltd. A Community Fall Prevention Class for People with Age-Related Balance Problems...

Keeping Your Balance - Keeping Active How does good balance help keep us active? As we get older we can experience loss of balance control and this loss can lead to a general lack of confidence or even falls. Our sense of balance and good balance reactions can be retrained through specific exercises. With regained confidence we will go out more and this will, in turn, keep us fitter and more active. How will the class help with your balance system? I assess you before we start the classes to see what your needs are. In the classes, I give exercises tailored to improving your balance system, in sitting, standing or walking, depending on your fitness and ability. The course is based on the Otago Exercise Programme, a strength and balance retraining programme designed to prevent falls in older people. This exercise programme has been shown to reduce falling and the likelihood of injury when older people fall. Who will run the classes? Martina Bisping is a qualified physiotherapist who practises in her clinic at the Shadi Danin Medi Spa in New Church Road. She has been keeping older and younger adults active and balanced for twenty years. She is run-

With possibly the longest title for a play ever, here we bring news of a local theatre group’s latest offering…

Sackville Theatre Company’s Latest Offering Amateur dramatics is alive and well in Hove with The Sackville Theatre Company’s latest production being staged locally in October. Here is a paragraph outlining what promises to be a fun evening for all who attend. Flushed with their previous successes, the stalwart veterans of The Farndale Dramatic Society are poised to conquer yet another dramatic idiom. This production sails the SS Farndale Avenue into the world of thirties musical comedy. The ladies prove that the age of glamour, elegance and enchantment is not dead - “well, not quite”. Circumstances almost beyond their control threaten to wreck the evening’s entertainment, but the ladies and Gordon in true Farndale form soar above such mundane matters to present some catchy numbers and a stunning underwater sequence.

THE SACKVILLE THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS The Farndale Avenue Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society’s WE FOUND LOVE AND AN EXQUISITE SET OF PORCELAIN FIGURES ABOARD THE SS FARNDALE AVENUE A Comedy by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin jnr At the Glebe Villas Hall, Glebe Villas, Hove Thursday October 23rd -7.45pm Friday October 24th – 7.45pm Saturday October 25th 2.30pm (matinee only) For further details call: 01273 600983 or email: sidneyjones5@btinternet.com

Now it is fully up and running we thought a trip to The Hive Cafe was in order to see how it is going...

The Hive Café and Community Rooms

We Bake, We Make, We Brew!!

The above line is written on a blackboard at The Hive Café in Stoneham Park and, truth is, you would do well to argue any different. As the name suggests, The Hive Café is indeed a veritable hive of activity. Bustling with the delightful chatter of toddlers while Mum grabs a snack, or friends sharing a coffee at a table under a tree in the park, or one of the wide range of community groups that utilise the upstairs community rooms, The Hive Café really is a happening place in the heart of the Poets’ Corner community! The café is actually a Community Interest Company, meaning all profits after wages and expenses go back into the project to improve it and make it even more of a community asset. It is self funding but this status allows it to apply for grants and awards and, indeed, it was several grants that enabled the project to get up and running in the first place. The Hive’s stated purpose is to provide affordable, healthy food to the community whilst providing a ‘hub’ where people can meet and organise activities. The centre has three staff and welcomes volunteers to get involved with the day-today running of the café. The Cafe uses local suppliers as much as possibe for example the coffee comes from the Horsham Coffee Roaster and the non homogenised milk from Downsview Farm Dairy and bread from Spade Fork Spoon (Poet’s Corner)

Since opening in April, the café has gradually established itself and is now offering a full menu to the good people of Poets’ Corner and beyond. All the food is cooked on site, with the exception of some of the cakes that are made in Poets’ Corner. The menu is designed to cover breakfasts and lunch for example...an all day breakfast sour dough sandwich or sweetcorn fritters with mango salsa, can both be eaten as a brunch or a lunch. The Cafe also has excellent homemade soups and sandwiches with a real emphasis on healthy food. Each day there is a specials board with several options available in addition to the standard menu. On my visit I sampled the meatball & mozzarella focaccia bake which was extremely tasty and tastefully presented! Another feature of the cafe is that they have a wall featuring work done by local Poets Corner artists which are all available for purchase. In its previous existence, the café was more of a kiosk with lots of randomly arranged office spaces behind the counter and upstairs. It is now a light, spacious café with a contemporary style and comfortable atmosphere, providing a real service to the community with its excellent food and community rooms available for hire. If you haven’t been there yet, get yourself along to check out the menu and the spaces - The Hive Café is a real local resource for Poets’ Corner.

Association

Our local association was inaugurated in 1972 to promote and prosper the National Trust (NT), and to arrange social events for the enjoyment of our members. Our objectives remain the same and our friendly group, until now restricted to NT members, is now open to anyone wishing to support our ideas. We meet twice a month on a Thursday afternoon at the Ajex Centre, Hove, and on a Monday evening at Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC). We have a variety of speakers during the autumn, winter and spring giving talks, usually illustrated, on a wide range of subjects, including Charles Dickens, the Olympic Games, Brighton In Pictures Over The Last 100 Years and Bee Keeping, to mention just a few. We also have a NT sales table at these meetings, not forgetting a cup of tea and biscuits. We have several coach outings during the summer months, visiting NT properties and many other places of interest. In the autumn we have a lunch, a Christmas tea, and a New Year lunch. Each year a five day holiday is organised, visiting places of great national beauty and NT properties. All these activities raise money and we are proud that over the years we have donated over £100,000 to the NT, priority being given to local properties, namely Nymans Gardens and Saddlescombe Farm. The annual subscription is £10 and details of the dates and times of all our meetings and how to join are available from our Membership Secretary, Miss E RaynarSmith, tel: 01273 562404. Please contact her for more information and an application form. Come along to one of our meetings for a taster; you will be most welcome.

Roz Scott visited Sussex Central YMCA to find out what happens at this community hub.

Sussex Central YMCA, Marmion Road Yolandi Taylor heads up the YMCA Centre on Marmion Road as one of her five hats. She is Head of Education, Youth, Sport and Community as well as of the youth centre. The YMCA centre is a community hub in the heart of Poets’ Corner. She likes the regeneration of Poets’ Corner and would love to oversee the development and refurbishment of the youth centre into an all-singing and all-dancing, 21st century, purpose built youth centre. Her ambitions are constrained by ever-reducing funding which is Yolandi’s primary frustration. The YMCA is a Christian organisation which rightly has a zero tolerance policy towards drugs. Yolandi regrets the end of the ParkSafe programme, where the YMCA provided three youth workers to put on activities for young people and patrol Stoneham Park. She welcomes the opening of the Hive café in the park with graffiti provided by young people from the YMCA. Further investment is needed to organise positive activities for young people in the neighbourhood. Sussex Central YMCA has merged with YMCAs across Sussex in Hastings, Lewes and YMCA Surrey in Guildford to form YMCA DownsLink Group, which will be a big enough organisation to attract more and larger pots of funding.

East Sussex Decorative Fine Arts Society

The employment strand of DownsLink Group finds Positive Placements for young people that give them work experience and training which may lead to an apprenticeship or employment. Three students from this programme have got jobs in leisure centres and three young people have been offered jobs in the YMCA.

A programme of illustrated lectures for 2014/2015

The DownsLink Group YMCA can refer to their sister organisation, the Dialogue Centre, which offers a range of counselling services, and to the Youth Advice Centre for housing, sex education or careers advice.

Casanova: the story of Venice’s most notorious son. Performance by Mr Ian Kelly BA MA.

The YMCA has activities for people aged 0 to 50+. For young people, after-school clubs at the centre include a toddlers’ gym, trampolining and tots’ trampolining, Playzone Extra, basketball, Force Football, street cricket, street dance, tennis and netball for juniors and seniors. The centre also offers a Glee-style performance group, who jam street music, plus jazz and modern dance classes. Insanity is a high-energy exercise club; others include Zumba, over 50s fitness and Tots’ Yoga. The Playzone Extra programme for children from Reception to Year 6 provides a range of fun-filled activities on Tuesdays for £3.50. This is even more important since the safe play area called Westows closed when the funding was withdrawn.

We meet on the last Wednesday evening of the month at The Boundary Rooms, Sussex County Cricket Ground, Eaton Road, Hove BN3 3AN. Wednesday 29th October 2014

Wednesday 26th November 2014 Star of Wonder, Star of Light: a new look at part of the Christmas story, by Mrs Hilary Hope Guise MA. Wednesday 28th January 2015 Lalique: the story of one of France’s most well-known glass artists, by Mr Andy McConnell. These are just a few of our lectures. The venue is accessible by local bus services and there is free parking on site for the lecture evenings. Guests are welcome to attend two meetings - the charge is £5. A bar is open at 6.45 so you can meet fellow members and to check visits and holidays. The lecture is at 7.45pm. (No lectures are held in July, August or December.) For details, phone 01273 206456.

Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

Breakfast of Kings and Queens A study published in the Telegraph a few years ago revealed that two thirds of Britons did not eat breakfast and another recent survey found that one in 7 primary school children were going to school without breakfast. Though economics are a contributing factor to these startling figures, it is (thankfully) not the main reason why so many are missing the most important meal of the day. So if you still don’t know why you should get out of bed 20 minutes earlier to have a little something before heading off to work or school, here are a few reasons why you should ‘break your fast’ every day: - Children and teenagers who eat breakfast are less likely to become obese and develop diseases such as type 2 diabetes or heart disease in later life. They also perform far better in school and in IQ tests. - Adults who skip breakfast have a 20% higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes and a 27% higher chance of suffering from heart disease. Low blood sugar levels, naturally occurring after many hours without food and drink, will prevent your brain from functioning normally. You will also be far more sus-

ceptible to snacking on sugar or high carbohydrate foods throughout the day, thus contributing to weight gain, low energy and generally low moods. (Don’t miss your next issue of Poets Pages for delicious and energy-packed breakfast ideas.) Bon appetit! “We’ve had our flu jab.”

Frveeryeone

for e 5 aged 6 r e and ov

Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

Ask your GP about the free flu jab.

How to Find the Right Builder A Quick Guide from 360 Home Poets’ Corner offers beautiful terraces that require sympathetic remodelling to create the extra space modern living requires.

Once your plans have been drawn up and approved and the finances have been cleared, you need to find the right builder. This can often be the trickiest part of the process. There are many places you could try: Checkatrade, friends’ recommendations, local adverts. But what makes a ‘good builder’? And how can you be sure that the relationship you form at the beginning of the project is as smooth at the end? When we started 360 Home, we drew up a list of qualities we considered paramount. We instil them into every member of our team and hope they’ll help guide your decision-making at this crucial stage. 1. Professional skills supported by an intelligent approach to building. 2. Friendly, polite, genuinely helpful craftspeople. 3. Skilled workmanship with fine attention to detail. 4. Innate knowledge of different period styles and a feel for what will work in each space. 5. Clear, open communication and pricing structures. 6. Reliable and responsive client care. We don’t pretend to be the cheapest builders in Sussex but we do aim to offer extremely good value for your money. We encourage all our new clients to talk to our previous clients – after all, they’ve been through the process of finding the right builder and they’re best placed to give an honest appraisal. A good builder is a busy one It’s always worth waiting for the right builder. We schedule our projects carefully so we can be as attentive during the final stages of your build as we are at the beginning. We have a wealth of clever design ideas and experience of working with period houses that will transform your home into your ideal living space. Our craftspeople

are highly skilled and everyone takes personal pride in achieving an excellent finish. To arrange a meeting, an estimate, or for a no-obligation chat about what you’d like to do, please call Sian or Karl on 01273 358901 or email Sian@360-home.co.uk. John Renbourn - Legendary Guitarist Hove Methodist Church, Friday 7th November Stay Up Late, the Brighton-based charity, are proud to announce that the legendary guitarist John Renbourn is appearing at a benefit gig for them at Hove Methodist Church, Portland Road, on Friday 7th November. John is maybe best known for his collaboration with guitarist Bert Jansch as well as his work with the folk group Pentangle. His work is often categorised as folk but it also covers blues, early music and classical, and he is a true master of his art. Support comes from wellknown local folk treasure Bob Lewis, a fine singer of traditional Sussex songs. The night will be raising funds for the charity’s Gig Buddies project, which enables socially isolated people with learning disabilities and autism to enjoy live music by matching them up with a volunteer ‘buddy’ who loves the same kind of music. The scheme was started by the charity in Brighton and Hove in 2013 and has now spread to the rest of Sussex, with them recently being included in Nesta’s 50 New Radicals in the UK, working to change communities for the better. Stay Up Late’s roots as a charity lie firmly in music as it was founded by the punk band Heavy Load. Three of the members of Heavy Load had learning disabilities and the band were frustrated at seeing the lack of social opportunities that people with learning disabilities had, often typified by their fans having to leave gigs at 9pm due to inflexible staffing rotas for support staff. Hence the call to ‘Stay Up Late’. (The band’s story was featured in the award-winning feature documentary, also called ‘Heavy Load’.) West Hove resident Paul Richards was the bass player in the band and is now the director of Stay Up Late, working to ensure that people with learning disabilities have full and active social lives, something that many of us take for granted.

Another fantastic local Poet’s Corner business...

Poets Based...Hushush Cakes

So, Hayley and Bash - why did you launch Hushush Cakes? We both have two young children and needed a job that would work around our family lives. We love cake and we seemed quite good at baking, so it was the obvious path for us to choose. It took a lot of courage as we didn’t want it just to be a pipe dream we’d discussed many times over a glass of wine. We dared each other to make it happen, and the next thing we’ve got a website, market stall and are up to our elbows in butter, sugar and flour!

Is it fun working with your best friend? Yes, lots! We only live three doors away from each other and are constantly running back and forth with ingredients, utensils and samples of our latest bakes. We both have different strengths and weaknesses, so balance each other out quite well. For example, Hayley is terrified of tempering chocolate, while Bash gets nervous about piping icing. We share the responsibilities and get great results. How did you come up with the name Hushush Cakes? This was the most difficult decision to make. We found it hard to both agree on the right one for our style of brand, as we wanted to steer away from the vintage look which is popular with cakes. We wanted a more grown-up feel about it and viewed eating delicious cakes as a naughty, secretive pastime (for some people!). But your secret IS safe with us; we’ll keep it hush hush, promise. What’s your favourite cake to make? Bash – Red Wine Velvet Cake and Dark Chocolate & Raspberry Tarts. Hayley – Children’s Octonauts Mint Chocolate Cake. It was the first attempt at a novelty cake and made me realise that I was good at it. Where can I buy your cakes? George Street Saturday Market or contact us directly through our website/Facebook/Twitter. We’re often found at local festivals. These are all advertised on our website: www.hushushcakes.co.uk How much notice do you need if I am ordering a cake from you? 24 hours’ notice unless it’s a novelty cake, in which case, three days. Where do you see yourselves in five years’ time? Serving our delicious cakes in our own Hushush shop and looking to open our next one! We would also like to be holding children’s baking workshops to encourage the next star baker. www.hushushcakes.co.uk
