Don’t miss Picnic in the Park...
News from the Friends of Stoneham Park By the time you read this, here at Friends of Stoneham Park HQ we will be gearing up for the Picnic in the Park on 10 September. We have lots of food and drink stalls, music and entertainment. Brighton Gin are joining us along with Hannah Makes Cakes, the Amazing Art Cart, Bee in the Woods and plenty more. All the money we raise will go towards improving the park so come along and support us. Over the summer, the council have opened up the consultation on the City Plan Part Two. It’s up on their website and part of it is about the city’s open spaces such as allotments and of course parks. In this time of budget limitations, it’s essential you let the council know how much we need our green spaces. Please take a look and fill it in. It’s great to see the table tennis table finally installed. This was possible with a grant from the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund topped up with money we raised from previous events. Thanks to Mark Drayton from the Trust for Developing Communities and CityParks for their invaluable help along the way.

We held our AGM in July under the guise of Pimm’s in the Park, and the bribery worked as we were joined by many of our friendly neighbours and supporters. Ellie Cobb was voted in as Chair, with Paul Moore stepping down from Chair to Deputy. Richard Hearnden took over from Sandie Spackman as Treasurer and Domino Moore remained as Secretary. We meet every two months in a local pub to plan events and talk about improvements or issues in the park. Details are posted on the Facebook page and anyone is welcome to join us. We have taken over the growing garden from Happitots this year and are planning an informal gardening club for all ages from September. We’ll be in the park on a Monday after school so come over to the allotment area on the east side and see how we are getting on. This could be extended to Tuesdays and we are keen to open this up to older people too. If you love growing your own or you want to get started and can help, please get in touch. We are always on the lookout for garden tools or seed donations too! Keep an eye on the Friends of Stoneham Park noticeboard for event information - it’s on the wall of The Hive as you come in the top gate. We are on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram too or email us on friends.of.stoneham.park@gmail.com. We always need volunteers!

Here’s news of a book set in Poets Corner...
Local Author – Lucy Rutherford Lucy Rutherford lives in Sackville Gardens and her debut crime novel “A Bunch of Lies” is set in Poets Corner. How long have you lived in West Hove? I’ve lived here for thirty years and couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Tell us more about your book... It’s a crime novel with a touch of comedy noir! A little girl is killed in a hit and run in Coleridge Street. Her single parent mother is desperate to know who the killer is. Much of the book centres on a florist’s shop on Portland Road and the florist, Nina, feels she’s guessed the identity of the driver of the car, as a strange man bought flowers and then placed them at the incident scene. However, she only has her intuition to go on and who would believe a troubled young woman secretly in love with a gay man and who’d stop at nothing to turn him straight? That is until they find Amy’s diary and a chain of events is set in motion linking lies from the past to the present among members of the local community and which only another death can stop….

Poets Corner is a lovely neighbourhood with a unique character that I knew would be perfect for my plot. There’s a good community and a diverse population ensuring that there are enough characters with a story to tell. I used to wonder what went on behind the closed doors and thought if I want to know, then I’d better write it! I’ve used a lot of the streets, the old Connaught Centre and the pub that used to be The Eclipse and became The Poets Corner (now The Poets Ale and Smoke House). Have you got any more books planned?

Why did you set it in Poets Corner?
I’ve nearly finished writing a revenge novel called “The Sun God’s Daughter”, again set in Brighton but this time based on one of the estates. I love hearing from readers, and people are very welcome to get in touch via my website: www.lucyrutherford.co.uk. I try and reply to everyone. I’m always happy to talk to readers’ or writers’ groups too. “A Bunch of Lies” by Lucy Rutherford is published in paperback by Publish Nation. It is available from Amazon priced £7.99 paperback and Kindle for £2.10 and City Books Hove. The book is also available to borrow from Brighton and Hove libraries.

Could you befriend an older person?
Time to Talk Befriending Time to Talk Befriending is a local charity that helps older people who feel lonely, invisible, forgotten, to “feel like they are living again” and “no longer feel trapped inside my own home”. Take our amazing scheme member Muriel for example. Muriel is awesome yet before she was matched with her volunteer befriender she felt very lonely: “I don’t have any family and most of my friends have passed away. I didn’t use to get out much and I couldn’t be bothered to eat…but since being introduced to my volunteer befriender I have a purpose! I feel as if I am in the world again and it’s marvellous!” (Muriel, West Hove) Muriel is one of the many elders living within our local community who have a rich life history and lived experience to share, yet, like Muriel, there are a staggering number of people who feel chronically lonely most of the time because they have no one to talk to, which is why it is time for change! Through careful matching with trained and vetted volunteers, older people are able to benefit greatly from regular companionship and ‘time to talk’ through

our charity. In fact, people’s lives have literally been transformed for the better just from spending an hour in someone’s company once a fortnight or once a week. But we are literally just skimming the surface in terms of need which is why we need your help! There is a substantial amount of evidence which highlights how elderly people are more at risk of feeling lonely and isolated because of long term health conditions, issues with mobility and the loss of friends and family which is why we are looking for more volunteer befrienders to join the ever increasing voluntary team! To find out more about how you can make a positive difference in someone’s life through befriending please contact one of the Time to Talk Befriending team today on 01273 737710 or email volunteers@timetotalkbefriending.org.uk. We look forward to hearing from you!

A Must-Visit Venue for your New Tiles and Bathroom If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit. There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated towel rails. Ege sanitary ware, which comes with a 10-year warranty, is exclusive to Eurotiles & Bathrooms in the UK and they have other stylish brands such as Burlington and Pura Bathrooms.
Most of the range is in stock so you don’t need to plan weeks in advance, you can just come in, choose your products and take them away, or arrange for free local delivery. The Brighton showroom is based on the Freshfields Business Park, near to Screwfix and Benchmarx Kitchens. They offer free parking so you can pull up outside, and knowledgeable, friendly staff to help you decide on the best products for your project. www.eurotilesandbathrooms.com Email: brighton@eurotilesandbathrooms.com; Phone: 01273 605445

Look out for a Snowdog near you...
Snowdogs by the Sea Hit the Streets of Hove Snowdogs by the Sea, an extraordinary public art trail, will hit the city streets for nine weeks in September (24 September - 27 November). The magical sculpture trail will feature around 46 giant Snowdogs, inspired by the much-loved animated short film, The Snowman™ and The Snowdog, based on the book by Raymond Briggs. Each Snowdog will be individually decorated by different artists and generously sponsored by local businesses. The giant Snowdogs will be joined by a pack of Snowdog puppy sculptures designed by local schoolchildren. Locations will include the Big Beach Café at Hove Lagoon, Hove Museum, Hove Park and Hove Promenade. The trail is being organised by the Martlets Hospice in conjunction with Wild in Art, following in the footsteps of similar projects run by Wild in Art in other cities, such as Gromit Unleashed in Bristol. At the end of the event each Snowdog will be auctioned to raise funds for the hospice. Snowdogs by the Sea is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors to Brighton and Hove in the autumn. Imelda Glackin, Martlets Hospice CEO, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses, artists, community groups and schools who have all come together to enable us to create this unique trail.

What is wonderful about this project is that, as well as being a brilliant, free event, which everyone can enjoy, it will also raise vital funds for Martlets so that we can support and care for more people who need hospice care.” Many artists have drawn inspiration for their designs from Brighton & Hove’s history, seafront location and iconic architecture. DJ Norman Cook has commissioned well known street artist Ryca to create his Snowdog at the Big Beach Café, whilst crime author Peter James is likely to have a police-themed Snowdog. Schoolchildren have been busy coming up with their own designs for their snow puppies, which will join the trail and be on show at Brighton Museum, Hove Museum and the Jubilee Library throughout the event. Organisers also hope to run a farewell event in December, bringing all the Snowdogs together for a final extravaganza.

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue
You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a whole property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.
The Reality Today
The care Act 2014 introduced in April 2015 allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care under the new charges and assessment of resources regulations. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all currently averaging around £1,000 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for after any relevant income was taken into account.
The Solution
For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e. from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two property Trusts either immediately or within a properly structured Will at the same time in most cases, protect the integrity of your home should you ever require care in the future, so long as avoiding care fees was not a primary motivating reason behind the implementation of the strategy - i.e. you should be looking to protect your half of your property should your spouse remarry after your death, or you should be looking to ensure that your children would not lose 50% of their inheritance should they be made bankrupt or divorce or for example you should be looking to prevent a generational inheritance tax burden in the future. These are all sound reasons for implementing this strategy which in themselves are not deliberate deprivation of assets, but the implementation of which protects the integrity of the property. For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey your property into it which will produce the same result and again this must be well in advance of any care considerations and the motivation must not solely be for the purpose of preventing your home being used to fund your care.
The Reasoning
When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. With our Post Death Property Protection Package when the first partner dies, they leave their half into their Trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the Primary Beneficiary which means that as they own half and are Trustee of the other half they have complete control over the property and what happens to it. The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as ultimate Trust Beneficiaries will have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy and because it is not possible to sell just the survivor’s half of the property, the integrity of the property is protected. While the ‘’market value” of half a property is negligible, The Care Act 2014 guidelines do allow for this half to have a charge placed on it under a deferred payment arrangement for care fees which is why this package includes a Lasting Power of Attorney grant for Property and Financial affairs which will enable a preappointed Attorney to act on behalf of the survivor should they be unable to themselves and negotiate with the Local Authority for the property to be rented out and a percentage of the income given to the Local Authority instead of a charge being placed. The second half of the property would then ultimately go into the Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. With our Whole of Life and Post Death Complete Property and Family Protection Package both halves of the property are conveyed into Trust IMMEDIATELY. This means the whole property is protected straight away and not just after the first party dies. The benefits of this package are that it then protects the property even if both parties go into care before the death of either. It also means that if the survivor goes into care the property does not have to be rented out but if it is, 100% of the income goes directly into the Trusts for the benefit of the survivor or any of the other Trust Beneficiaries and does not have to be given to the Local Authority. The most important benefit of this package though is the property can be sold at any time and the resulting proceeds be fully protected for the whole family within the Trusts and no negotiation with the Local Authority is required. Sole owners and couples who have immediately conveyed their properties into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and not solely for the purpose of preventing their home being used to fund their care (deliberate deprivation of assets) secures the integrity of the property (so long as entry into care is not within 6 months of setting up the strategy) as the property is not absolutely owned by an individual anymore and it is not legal to force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust Beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about which package would be of best benefit to you and your family.

The next in the series of gardening articles especially for Poets Pages.....
Poets Gardens and Patios Autumn brings a final harvest of crops sown in spring so now is the time to restock your pots with some fresh compost and sow onions, garlic, mizuna lettuce and spring onions. If you have a large trough you could also sow spinach and pak choi. Spinach and mizuna can be harvested throughout winter especially if you protect from the frosts with a cloche or fleece. The onions, garlic and pak choi will be ready to harvest in spring. For autumn and winter colour, ivies can be radiant. As they are climbers, provide a trellis attached to your wall for them to cling to or allow them to cling to the bare brickwork. Try Buttercup – a golden-leaved variety, or Boston - a deep claret red variety. Virginia creeper is a vigorous large deciduous climber. It has leaves with five ovate leaflets, turning bright red and orange in autumn, and produces blue-black berries. Grow green and variegated varieties together to create a contrast. The green and variegated varieties are evergreen and the coloured ivies tend to be deciduous and will therefore drop their leaves as the winter sets in. North- or east-facing walls and fences often receive very little direct sunlight and can be difficult places to grow plants, but this is not a problem for ivy. In fact most ivies prefer the shade and can get burnt in too much direct sunlight.
They are also very hardy and need little maintenance apart from regular pruning to prevent them taking over. Less vigorous varieties of ivy are great in the base of pots and in hanging baskets. For winter baskets a mix of the following plants works well: Buxus (Box), Crocus, Gaultheria, Iris reticulata cultivars, Hedera (ivy) – either variegated or plain, Carex (ornamental sedge), Primula (primulas and polyanthus), Cyclamen (small-flowered cyclamen), Viola (winter pansies and viola) and Erica carnea (winter-flowering heathers). Remember to water regularly unless there are frosts forecast. The berries of ivy are great for feeding the birds throughout the winter. Berries are another way to bring winter colour to your pots and containers. Pyracantha is a popular shrub that should be regularly spur-pruned to keep it trained and produce a good show of bright red or orange berries against its dark green foliage. News about Bowel Cancer...
Let’s Lift the Taboo on Bowel Cancer to Save Lives Bowel cancer is the fourth most common cancer but the second biggest cancer killer. Around 110 people are diagnosed with bowel cancer every day, but the good news is it can be successfully treated in over 90% of cases if caught early. The current high mortality rate is due to the high proportion of patients who are not diagnosed until the later stages of the disease when it is much harder to treat successfully. Most people are very surprised to hear how common bowel cancer is, as it is talked about much less than other common cancers, mainly due to the embarrassment many of us feel when talking about anything to do with bums and poo. In order to improve early diagnosis rates we need to get everybody talking about the disease. What can we do to reduce our own risk? Bowel Screening Bowel screening tests are posted to everyone registered with a GP once they reach 60. The test is done over the course of a few days at home and is a quick and effective way of detecting any blood in your stools which could be a sign of cancer. It also detects polyps, which are non-cancerous growths, but can develop into
