Welcome to the eleventh edition of

Poets’ Pages!!!

I have to admit I am writing this super early in an attempt to get this September edition off to the printers before heading off to France for the family holiday. At time of writing the Summer so far has been amazing with lots of sunshine and soaring temperatures. I hope that that still applies for you as you read this! So what have we for you this month? Well good question! What you should find within the Poets Pages this month are all the usual features plus an article featuring a local artist and mother, and also a feature about the YMCA in Marmion Road which is a real focal point for activities locally. You know I am sure there is loads more but I can’t tell you what!! Put your feet up, have a flick through and see what you find!! Have a great September! We love to feature local groups. Please send articles to info@poetspages.co.uk...

Your Local U3a What is the U3A? U3A stands for the University of the Third Age but it runs no courses, requires no qualifications and gives none! It is organised by its members and funded by low annual subscriptions. What it does do is offer opportunities for people to meet in groups to follow their interests or pursue new ones, as well as the chance to attend talks by interesting speakers, plus social events and outings. Who can join the U3A? Everyone in the Third Age is welcome. The ‘Third Age’ refers to the time after full-time employment and/or parental responsibility, when we are freer to pursue our own interests. No qualifications are required, and none are given. What do we do? Brunswick, West Hove & Portslade U3A has about 25 special interest groups which meet regularly throughout ‘term’ times. The interests covered by these groups range over Theatre Visits, Reading Fiction, Music, Lan-

guages, Writing, Walks, Art, Play Reading and Theatre Studies, Gardens, Discussion Groups, Patchwork… and many more. Suggestions for new groups are always welcome. Each group has a co-ordinator, with members of the group sharing knowledge and experience, discussing ideas. Groups usually meet at members’ homes, although obviously theatre or garden visits and walks take place elsewhere. We also have a programme of interesting talks and visits to places of local interest, plus social events for all members, and at the AGM in November we have some entertainment and again a chance to socialise. What does it cost? There is an annual fee, currently £16, and that’s it! Talks, social events and visits may have a small additional charge. How to join or just find out a little more? On Wednesday, 10 September 2014 at 2pm we will have an Introductory Meeting to be held at the Ralli Hall, near Hove Station, where you can hear what is going on, meet members and see what all our groups are up to – and if you like what you see, you can join. If you would like more information, you can contact our Membership Secretary: Cynthia Barnes 01273 550745 cynthia.barnes@talktalk.net or visit our website: u3asites.org.uk/brunswick-westward . You don’t have to live in a particular catchment area in order to join a U3A, you can join any – or more than one! There are six local U3As covering Brighton and Hove and the surrounding area, with many more nationwide and internationally. Details available from U3A National Office: Telephone 0208 466 6139 or national.office@u3a.org.uk.

It all started in Poets Corner at the YMCA Centre in Marmion Road but has now grown and moved to King Alfred’s. Read on...

Netball club is looking for new recruits Thousands of women across the UK are discovering a great way to get fit which is fun, friendly and you probably last played at school – netball. UK figures reveal it’s one of the fastest growing participation sports for women with more than 156,000 women of all ages, from 25 – 60 years, playing every week across the country. It’s also a great alternative to working out in the gym or jogging. We’re a new netball club in Hove set up by a small group of friends who wanted to try out the traditional school sport again. The group has grown through word of mouth, posters and online marketing, but we are still looking for more players. Most of us haven’t played for over twenty years and we’re gradually relearning the rules and learning some new skills while making new friends as the club grows. Players say it has become ‘the highlight of my week’ and ‘brilliant fun’. Fast-paced and great exercise, netball remains a really good game to play. Although we’re mainly meeting for fun, the competitive element means you push yourself a

little bit more. And when you’re concentrating on getting the ball, you forget you’re actually doing exercise. Netball can burn up to 600 calories a session with its fast, explosive sprints and longer jogs, improves upper body strength and flexibility with its quick changes of direction plus helps hand-to-eye co-ordination. Each session we meet and do gentle warm-ups and stretches followed by some ball skill and tactic training. We then play a friendly game with players choosing what position to play and with regular breaks to swap position and have a breather. Afterwards, we sometimes go to the pub for a well-earned glass of wine and a chat. So far, we are not in a league but it is something we hope to do in the future. We’re open to all and operate a dropin policy. Just turn up and play, £5 per person. We play on Wednesday evenings from 8.30 – 9.30pm on the indoor netball courts at King Alfred Leisure Centre, Kingsway, Hove. The first session back after the summer is 10th September. Please do come and join us. If you’d like to know more email Caroline at c.sutton@virgin.net or contact Helen on 07789 912360.

Poets’ Corner Past... Sackville Road Railway Bridge This photograph, taken in September 1926, was the original bridge built about 1839 when the railway from Brighton to Shoreham was under construction. At that time Sackville Road was known as Hove Drove and was merely a farm road connecting Hove Street with the Old Shoreham Road. Doubtless it was of the same width as the bridge - about 16 feet. Sackville Road south of the bridge was built during the 1870s and 1880s, and the upper portion about 1900. For more than 25 years the old bridge then remained as a great hindrance to traffic as buses could not pass through the bridge, development to the north was restricted and the houses stopped at the top of Sackville Road. Reconstruction of the bridge started in August 1926.

Brought to you by locally based nutritionist Nathalie Sansonetti

Nathalie’s Monthly Health TIP

Top Tips for a Healthier ‘Back to School’ Back to school doesn’t just mean sparkling new pen cases and uniforms – for many of us it also often means the return of children’s sniffles and tummy bugs. So I thought I’d give you a few tips to help boost the whole family’s immunity: - A healthy tummy means a healthier immune system, so load up on organic plain live yogurt in the morning, and/or take a good quality probiotic at least 4-5 times a week. (Ask the health food store for advice on the right dosage for your child.) - Reduce your children’s sugar consumption by giving them regular little snacks with a little protein in each: houmous with cut-up vegetables and crackers, nuts and seeds (check for allergies first!), pieces of cooked chicken, oily fish sandwiches, almond or cashew nut butters on crackers or apples (my personal favourite!), guacamole, etc. - Feed their brains and growing bodies lots of good omega 3 fats: introduce oily fish at least twice a week (fresh or tinned) – salmon, mackerel, trout, sardines, tuna, herring; add ground seeds to their food, or have them snack on sunflower and pumpkin seeds, give them eggs for breakfast and at least one serving of green leafy vegetables every day. - As usual, make sure they are fully hydrated and reward them (not with sweets!) for finishing their water bottles at school. Nathalie Sansonetti BA, MA, DNN, mFNTP is a fully qualified nutritional therapist practising in various locations in Hove. She can be contacted by email: nathalie@newleafnutrition.co.uk or on 07980 620010 for private consultations & painless and non-invasive food intolerance tests for adults and children.

Here is a local kids group for you to check out...

Musical Bumps Musical Bumps may not be the biggest early childhood business out there, but we strive to be the best. So what is it that makes us stand out from the crowd? Real music – our repertoire is chosen to enable children to learn. The songs and games we use all have a purpose; many support the steady pulse, some will prepare the way for language development, others will help children to develop key social skills, or musical skills. Nothing happens by accident! Our teachers are all trained to deliver real music - with specially commissioned backing tracks for our dances, shake-alongs and just a few hand-picked songs, there’s no singing along to pre-recorded songs at Musical Bumps! Real education – All our teachers are carefully trained by recognised experts in the field of music and of early childhood education. We like to keep right up to date – thus ensuring that Musical Bumps fully supports the EYFS curriculum. Real fun – We know children learn best through play – our classes are playful and engaging. We have enough percussion and puppets for everyone to use, as well as

colourful resources to support circle games and dances. Many of our children who attend would like every day to be a “Musical Bumps day”. But don’t just take my word for it – come along and see for yourself! Whether you’re keen to bring your child to one of our classes, joining our team of teachers, or planning on inviting us to work at your nursery, why not get in touch today? Musical Bumps have classes at Impulse Leisure Centre, Lancing / The Studio above Little Dippers, Brighton / Hanover Community Centre, Hanover and Smile2live in Hove.
