HAPPY CHRISTMAS to Poets Corner!!! Blimey, Christmas is here again! Where did that sneak up from? It was only Summer a few weeks ago and here we are once again in a panic about turkeys, sprouts and shopping! I am afraid I am a bit last minute every Christmas and find the whole thing a bit of a strain often scratching around for presents in the shops on Christmas Eve before the shops close. I always make a resolution to be super organised for the next Christmas but never seem to pull it off. I hope you all have it nicely under control! Still all things considered it is a magical time of the year and we wish you all the very best for a restful and enjoyable yuletide! Poets Pages Team info@poetspages.co.uk Cover: James O’Sullivan. Meet a Poets’ Corner resident and Chairman of Hove Luncheon Club…
Poets Person – Des Phipps of Hove Luncheon Club Des Phipps is chairman of Hove Luncheon Club, which meets every Tuesday at Hove Methodist Church on Portland Road. How long have you lived in Hove? I moved into Poets’ Corner in 1970 – maybe I can claim to be a Hoveite now! What do you most like about the area? The local people are very friendly and speak to each other, making visitors very welcome. Tell us a bit about your background... I was born in Brighton in 1929 and life wasn’t easy at times. My father was a farm labourer and we were very poor. When I was nine I remember being out with my dad. My parents had got behind with the rent and when we got home our house had been boarded up by the council and my mother and sisters taken to the workhouse in Brighton. My dad and I decided to try and avoid the workhouse so we slept and lived in a hedge

in Woodingdean for seven weeks. The weather was OK apart from one night when it poured and we took refuge in a barn in Falmer Valley for a night. In those days, the only way to get family members out of the workhouse was to have an income and a place to live. So my dad tried to find work, leaving me during the day by myself and saying, “I’ll bring you something back, boy.” I remember enjoying being in the countryside, chasing rabbits and waiting for my dad to come back. Sometimes he brought fish and chips and we would make a fire and brew some tea with a kettle. Eventually he managed to find work and we were re-united with my mum and sisters. The war was very frightening for a young boy – bombs fell in Brighton quite close to us when we lived in Richmond Buildings. In 1941 I was evacuated with my sister Sylvia to Yorkshire but we weren’t put together and I didn’t see my family again until April 1945. I joined the army in 1947 and served six years. I met my wife soon after and we had three children together. Sadly, my daughter Marolyn died at the age of 22. I had another daughter some years later with my new partner. I am now 86 and a great-grandfather. Tell us about your involvement with Hove Luncheon Club... I have been attending Hove Luncheon Club for several years now and am proud to have served as chairman for the past three years. The club has gone from strength to strength since becoming an independent organisation and has nearly doubled in size within a couple of years.

Here is news of a great local initiative now in Poets Corner...
The Real Junk Food Project Brighton – Now at The Hive The concept is a simple one: intercept food waste from supermarkets, restaurants and local businesses that was destined for landfill and use it to feed people who need it, on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis - not just homeless people but anyone struggling financially. The revolutionary ‘pay as you feel’ concept encourages people to think about what that plate of food means to them; if they can’t afford to pay money, then they may want to wash up or weigh some intercepted food or spread the word. The Real Junk Food Project Brighton has been running for just under a year. In this time we have saved over 17 tonnes of edible food from landfill and fed thousands of people. We help individuals who are suffering from social isolation, loneliness and other mental health issues; our community cafés aim to provide a safe space. So far we have two weekly cafés and a monthly popup at The Hive, and a vast number of volunteers to help. We need food, help and support and hungry people to feed. We are a community interest company with the intention of using Government funding to expand and grow. Please get in touch to get involved. We cook a range of healthy fresh dishes from whatever ingredients are available on the day. Our volunteer teams are very creative and most of the dishes are vegetarian/vegan. The project came about in Brighton after our founder Adam Buckingham saw the project happening in Leeds where the creator of The Real Junk Food Project, Adam Smith, lives, and where they have 23 successful cafés running. Every Friday we run a café from One Church, Gloucester Place, Brighton. Every Thursday we are at Hollingdean Community Centre and on the first Wednesday of the month we are at The Hive, Stoneham Park. We also regularly cater for different events all over the city. We recently catered for MPs at The Houses of Parliament as they discussed the Food Waste Bill. We started our pop-up café at The Hive in September and have held three very successful lunches there so far. We invite members of the local community to get involved. We are there on the first Wednesday every month. We are currently looking for our own premises to run a seven-day-a-week café and community space. If anyone knows of a space that we could use, please contact us: realjunkfood@gmail.com LET’S REALLY FEED THE WORLD.

Written especially for Poets Pages by local gardener Joi....
Poets Gardens and Patios -Container Roses Growing roses in containers is ideal for small gardens or where space is limited. Ideally pot up plants in November using bare-root plants, but container-grown plants will do as well, and can be potted up any time between October and April. Only a few roses are tolerant of being grown in containers, as roses generally have long shallow roots for anchoring the plant and searching out moisture and nutrients. Choose deep containers and a good show of blooms should be achieved. The best roses for growing in containers are the patio and miniature types, which can be grown in fairly small but deep pots 23-35cm deep. You could also try growing less vigorous, more compact ground cover and climbing roses, but use larger containers with a minimum depth of 30-45cm. The Royal Horticultural Society recommends these top 5 roses for containers: R. Nice Day (patio climber) R. Sweet Dream (patio, also suitable as a standard) R. Magic Carpet (ground cover)

R. Laura Ford (patio climber) R. Robin Redbreast (miniature or ground cover) The best compost to use is a loam-based one to which 20 percent well-rotted manure may be added for richness. Position the container before filling with compost as it may be too heavy to move once planted up. Ensure you push the soil firmly around the stem so that it is secure in the pot. Roses love sunshine, however it is important that container-grown plants do not dry out or they will become prone to powdery mildew. If possible position the container so that it is shaded for part of the day, leaving the plant itself in full sun. Add a drainage layer of gravel at the bottom to ensure good winter drainage. Roses grow better if top-dressed each spring with a granular rose fertiliser. Avoid feeding after August as soft growth may be damaged by cold winters. Keep in moisture by mulching with manure. Every second year, remove the top 5cm (2in) of compost and replace with a fresh layer. Roses will need pruning. If you have some already, cut back the stems once they have finished flowering. In January or February prune again by cutting back the stems quite hard. Climbing roses need to be carefully pruned to train them along the frame or wire support. An advent calendar with a difference....
World’s first Beach Hut Advent Calendar goes from strength to strength This December will see the ninth annual Beach Hut Advent Calendar every night on Hove seafront. Now established as a Brighton and Hove tradition, this family friendly event will give you an opportunity to mark the countdown to Christmas in a uniquely artistic and spiritual way. Each night from the 1st to the 24th December, one hut (and one hut only) will open its doors from 5.30pm – 6.30pm to reveal an artistic surprise to remind us of the true meaning of Christmas. Come down to the seafront to enjoy a warming drink, a mince pie and to wonder at the creativity of the artists, schools and community groups who are all taking part this year. Regular visitors will be able to collect a special beach hut stamp each night and the person who has collected the most stamps by Christmas Eve will have the chance to win a fantastic Christmas hamper courtesy of the Co-Op. The event is organised by BEYOND, which uses creativity and the arts to stimulate thinking around Christian spirituality. The full schedule of openings and further information about the event can be found at www.beyondchurch.co.uk

Robert Nemeth, Councillor for Wish ward, on his day as a binman.......
Robert Nemeth...Binman for a Day I have long felt that the bin service suffers the greatest disconnect between those making the decisions on the Council’s Environment Committee and those actually doing the work. When I contacted CityClean to take the first step to address this by spending a day with the crews in our area, I kept being asked if I really meant a whole day, doing actual work, with a 5:30am start. What was I letting myself in for? As somebody who goes to bed late, early starts are certainly not my preference. I set three different alarms and made it to Hollingdean Depot on time. My reward was a warm welcome from the guys in the cab of the truck with an energy drink! Once we arrived on New Church Road, we got straight to work as I had already been trained the day before and provided with steel-toe-cap boots and clothes for all weathers. Although it was raining, I quickly found that just a T-shirt and high-vis vest worked best.
The members of the refuse team that does most of Wish Ward – Mark, Chris and Patrik – are recognisable to many. Lots of residents did a double-take though when they saw its newest member, including my nan on St Leonard’s Gardens who didn’t recognise me when I banged on her window to take away her bin. We worked solidly and collected in the region of ten tonnes of waste before heading back to base. I spent the final part of my shift with our local recycling team of Tony, Ann and Frank on a different truck. We started at the bottom of Woodhouse Road but had to reverse all of the way back down when a single car blocked the exit. The guys take such problems in their stride but it is clear that the service would run a lot more smoothly if certain members of the public were a little more considerate. I can’t emphasise enough just how much responsibility there is in being a driver and, again, urge motorists in particular to be a little more patient when stuck behind a team on a narrow street. The safety of our crews, who work hard for us, is paramount after all. My hope is to make this an annual outing. The work is indeed heavy but there is no substitute for properly understanding how something works than to actually try doing it.

We have sold more properties in Poet’s Corner in 2015 than any other agent… POET’S CORNER CUSTOMER REVIEWS

If you have instructed an estate agent to sell your property on a sole agency or sole selling basis the terms and conditions of that contract must be considered to avoid possible liability of paying two fees.
Goldin Lemcke, what can we say? We have been buying and selling houses through them for the last 15 years. We have always found, them to be, without fail, excellent at communicating throughout the whole process, always coming back to you when they say they will, and at the end of the day buying and selling is all about negotiation and they have always excelled in that. (Cowper Street) Have used this firm twice in the last few years to sell properties and both times they were efficient, and to the point, selling my properties at good prices without giving me loads of waffles about what they could and couldn’t do. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble either. Definitely recommend!! (Stoneham Road)
