Sad news about a local community figure...

Tributes to Chris Cooke from the Friends of Queen’s Park Chris Cooke, the treasurer of the Friends of Queen’s Park, died in February following a fire at a flat in Kemp Town. Chris, 48, was an important and valued member of our group, and an active campaigner for LGBT rights and community issues in Kemp Town.

FQP chair Johnny Webb said: “We are shocked and saddened to hear news of the death of Chris Cooke. Chris was Treasurer of Friends of Queen’s Park for a number of years; he kept our finances in good order with his gentle spirit and sense of humour. He was passionate about community and a keen supporter of all our events in the park. Chris was one of those rare people who lived in the service of others. He will be missed very much by every one of us in the FQP group.” “Chris was so kind, wise, good humoured and undemonstrably supportive of us all. We feel the ground has shifted beneath our feet,” said Chris Lowe, FQP.

“He was a kind and gentle man with a wry sense of humour. He was discretely efficient in his duties and

personally supportive of everyone he worked with. His sudden death is a great loss to our community,” said Conrad Brunner, FQP. At the request of his family, a JustGiving page has been set up to raise funds in his memory, the proceeds going towards park improvements. Details:

Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail

2016 sees the 5th annual Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail taking place to raise money to support the newly constructed Macmillan Horizon Centre, next to the Royal Sussex County Hospital and set to open its doors this spring. Geoff Stonebanks’ Driftwood Fundraising Group has now raised over £32,000 for the building of the centre and this year’s funds will contribute to its running costs!

Would you like to open your garden to help raise money for this stellar charity? There are already many gardens set to open their gates in the Brighton area. All will open between 11am and 5pm on both Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th July, many deciding to serve home-made tea and cakes, but this is not compulsory. The trail website has all the details or call Geoff on 01323 899296 for more details. www.macmillangardentrail.co.uk

Brighton Marathon

Artists Open Houses

This year’s Brighton Marathon takes place on Sunday 17th April, and there will be some road closures.

Each May in Brighton and Hove, artists open up their homes and studios, welcoming you inside to view a wonderful mix of art to view and buy. At 17, Barry Walk, just off Queen’s Park north side, we are opening our house for the very first time, where you will discover a diverse and innovative exhibition of paintings, printmaking, ceramics, and ceramic sculpture. Produced by four artists with very different styles and ideas showing in beautiful surroundings, this should absorb and stimulate the senses!

Volunteers are needed and you can register at: http://www.brightonmarathon.co.uk/volunteer before 10th April. TV presenter Zoe Ball will begin the race in Preston Park at 9.15am, and you can see the finish from a grandstand in Madeira Drive. The first elite runners are expected to finish at around 11.25. There will also be a charity village on the beach. For more information, visit www.brightonmarathon.co.uk

It’s a short walk from the Pepperpot bus stop, (buses 18, 21, 21A and 23) and easy parking is close by. Together with other open houses in the area, it will make for absorbing and worthwhile weekend outings for Queen’s Park Living readers during the month of May. 17, Barry Walk, BN2 0HP

Local News... Another interesting insight into the Royal Pavilion...

Q

Royal Pavilion...The Lost Photograph I’d like to tell you about an exciting new tour which has been launched at the Royal Pavilion. The tunnel tours are a fantastic opportunity for members and visitors to venture below stairs and explore some of the hidden histories of Brighton’s most famous building.

45 minute tours will offer an unpolished, behind-thescenes glimpse of areas of the palace not normally open to the public including its basement and famous tunnel. The tunnel was built in 1821 so that George IV, who was by then very overweight, could visit his riding school and stables (now Brighton Dome, Corn Exchange and Brighton Museum) in privacy. The tunnel runs underground between the basement of Brighton Museum and the basement of the Royal Pavilion. These private areas of the Royal Pavilion have seen many uses over the years. Originally the rooms of the basement were coal and wood stores which supplied the palace above. During the Second World War some of the rooms were repurposed as air raid shelters.

I remember my grandmother Bette Green, née Owers, of Kemptown, telling me that as a child she and her sister Joyce, along with their fellow classmates, went down into the basement when they were first opened as shelters. She remembered a photographer with the Brighton Herald taking photographs of the children during their visit. The photographer said that they would appear in the paper over the following weeks and that they would be able to see the photos up in the windows of the Brighton Herald office - now All Bar One opposite the Royal Pavilion gift shop. Every day for weeks, on their way back from school, they would stop to look in the windows of the Brighton Herald office to try and catch a glimpse of their photograph but alas it never

appeared. Whilst I was working at the Royal Pavilion I had opportunity to rifle through some of the photographic archives kept on site. Finally after much searching I stumbled across an old photo of my grandmother and her sister underneath the Royal Pavilion from all those years ago.

The photograph has since been digitised and archived with the previously unknown names of the children (where known) now added. I printed out a high resolution copy of the image and presented it to my grandmother. She finally saw the photograph she had been waiting to see for so long just a few weeks ago – 75 years after it was taken. Local Activity...

Q Here is a great local group to get involved with...

Hampshire Court Social Club Seeks New Members Hampshire Court Social Club is looking to attract new members, due sadly to a large number of our older members having sadly died over the past eighteen months or so.

Hampshire Court Social Club is open to anyone who wishes to join us - it is not confined solely to Hampshire Court residents. It is primarily a bingo club and is situated in Hampshire Lodge, which is in the centre of the Hampshire Court Estate in Upper St James’s Street. The building is in the middle of the square at the back of the estate, and looks like a bungalow. It is a small, low-rise building, and very warm and cosy inside. There is FULL disabled access, with disabled toilets available inside. Bingo sessions are held:

TUESDAY afternoons: 2.00pm - 4.00pm SATURDAY evenings: 7.30pm - 9.30pm

Admission is FREE and these are great social events where you will be made most welcome!

Aside from the bingo, on these days we have a raffle, and beverages are available at reasonable prices. Everyone is really friendly and there is always a great atmosphere.

Every couple of months or so, before the bingo session on a Saturday evening, we also hold Fish ‘n’ Chip evenings, and these are subsidised by the club so you do not pay the true cost!! Usually it is in the region of £4.00, so amazing value!! We also run coach trips to various destinations throughout the year, and these, too, are heavily subsidised for members. Popular destinations are Romford Market and Rye Market.

At Christmas and New Year we also hold very popular parties in the Lodge which are fantastic social occasions. For more information about our activities and how to join, please phone our Chairman, Les, on 01273 607718 - or call in at our Club House (Hampshire Lodge) during the above bingo session opening hours.

A programme of public engagement on possible ways of changing Brighton & 23% Hove’s secondary school admissions system is under way.

The need for change has been triggered by rising demand for secondary school places, and also by the 15% University of Brighton’s proposal to create a new secondary free school in the eastern central area of the city. As of September 2018 the projected rise in the number of secondary age pupils means that in some catchment areas there will be too many pupils for the places available.

Model B would give residents of the Queen’s Park area a choice between the new school and Longhill High School. Model C would see Queen’s Park within a three-school catchment area for Dorothy Stringer School, the new school and Longhill High School. The engagement exercise will seek residents’ views on whether to keep random allocation within catchment areas as the ‘tie-breaker’ for oversubscribed schools, or to use home to school distance instead. Councillors are also looking to see whether they can make more schools more accessible to children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The chair of the council’s cross party school organisation working group is Cllr Daniel Chapman. He said: “We want to engage with people’s views on the general principles of how they think the catchment areas should work. The boundary lines indicated are suggestions at this stage. The feedback we get from this engagement exercise will help us draw up concrete proposals that will be the subject of a formal consultation process in the autumn.”

You can find out more and give your views via the council website at https://www.brighton-hove.gov. uk/2018-admissions. The closing date for comments is Sunday 24th April.
