‘OUTSTANDING OFSTED’

View of the front elevation in Queen’s Park Road, taken on 22 March 1970, when the future of the church seemed uncertain, after a life of some seventy years (it was built in the 1890s). For some time the building stood empty and boarded up. Services ceased and in 1988 plans were approved for its conversion to flats. However, it is still standing and is now the Orchard Day Nursery. Local Police...

Q

Meet the man in charge of your local PCSOs...

Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector Brian McCarthy How long have you been in the police?

I have been a police officer for 20 years. All of my time has been spent in uniform. During that time I have worked as a response officer covering the emergency calls. For the last two years I have been the Neighbourhood Police Inspector for Central Brighton. This covers Kemp Town, Regency, North Laine and St Peter’s wards. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is being able to make a difference to the communities I work for. This can be as simple as resolving a local neighbour dispute to catching a drug dealer. I am still as committed to making communities safer for the public as I was when I started 20 years ago. The only difference now is that I have a team of two sergeants and 15 PCSOs to help me achieve that. What are the challenges that you face?

At the moment the main challenge is the new Neighbourhood Policing model. This is part of the Local Policing Plan and involves reviewing neighbourhood policing to ensure it is giving the best value for money.

At this time there is ongoing consultation into the PCSO role and numbers. Here in Brighton we have already made some changes to neighbourhood police such as bringing all the Neighbourhood Police officers together into three teams so we can then target problem areas which myself and the PCSOs highlight. What are your interests outside work?

I am a season ticket holder at the Amex; I also have an allotment where I grow my own fruit and vegetables.

How can we help you in your work? You can help us by reporting crime that is happening in the area. Also if you see any anti-social behaviour or suspicious activity call it in, please do not assume someone else will. Recently as a result of a call by the public, we arrested a male for supplying drugs in Queen’s Park. If you feel that by reporting crime there will be repercussions, Crimestoppers has the facility to report crime anonymously on 0845 555 111; or on their website. How can we contact you?

I can be contacted on: Brian.mccarthy@sussex.pnn.police.uk

All incidents need to be reported by calling 101 for our non emergency number or 999 for emergencies. You can also report incidents online by visiting the Sussex Police website.

Popular local artist Janet Brooke is having an exhibition...

Art Exhibition at The Independent

Local artist Janet Brooke is probably quite well known to our readers as her work has featured on our cover more than once. Her colourful linocuts and screenprints somehow capture part of the essence of our neighbourhood and city.

For her latest venture she has got together with Matt and James, the new owners of The Independent pub on Queen’s Park Road, to organise an exhibition of her prints. Janet’s work will be the first in a series of exhibitions by local artists, one of several exciting new ventures organised at this newly revamped free

house on the site of the old Walmer Castle.

The exhibition will run from February 11th to April 7th during pub hours, with your chance to meet the artist on the opening night from 7.30pm. www.theindependent.pub www.facebook.com/theindependentpub www.janetbrooke.com

Get fit and have fun - get yourself along to Queen’s Park Tennis Club...

The Queen’s Park Lawn Tennis Club Offers Great Value

Great Britain won the Davis Cup! And soon after that historic achievement, the grumbles started about the current state of tennis in the UK. There was genuine concern, expressed by Andy Murray and his teammates, about the dearth of promising young juniors and a general decline in participation nationwide. Speaking on BBC radio, former top 50 player Anne Keothavong complained that “tennis is still fundamentally a very expensive game to get into…it costs a lot of money.” While sending young hopefuls to elite tennis programmes in Florida and the Algarve is undeniably costly, that is a world away from the easy access and great value offered by Queen’s Park Lawn Tennis Club here in East Brighton. Learning the game and competing at tennis in Brighton just isn’t that expensive, especially for kids. “Our doors are wide open,” says QPLTC membership secretary Pauline O’Reilly. Club membership there is £55 a year (£50 if you pay before May 2016). Discount rates are £20 a year for students/juniors, and even less for families: £124 a year for two adults and two kids. That’s ridiculously cheap. Membership of a local fitness club (eg David Lloyd or Virgin Sport) is about that sum per month, not per year. Season ticket prices at the Albion are £465-£660 (£230-£315 for under-18s). For your QPLTC membership you get free club sessions three times a week, with free coaching in the summer months. They run tennis ladders and host frequent one day competitions throughout the year, open to a wide variety of playing standards. There are some fine players at the club, but the standard is not intimidating. QPLTC’s membership is rising, not falling, and the number of kids doing coaching on Saturday mornings is very encouraging. “We have a growing membership of about 135 altogether. This includes 55 enthusiastic new members all keen to participate either in social tennis or in competitions,” says Pauline. QPLTC is one of the 11 members of the Brighton & Hove Tennis Clubs and Parks League. QPLTC Club Secretary Joel Pearcey: “Parks Tennis is unique to Brighton and

although it might sometimes go under the radar it has been flying the flag for inclusive, affordable and competitive community tennis for nearly 90 years.” Most importantly, it’s about those things you cannot put a price on: keeping healthy, and being part of a volunteer-run local community club with a shared love of the game. QPLTC, says Joel, has “a diverse membership comprised of self-employed people, public sector workers, actors, teachers, artists and students as well as international visitors”. Will Queen’s Park produce a future Wimbledon champion? Maybe, maybe not. But QPLTC is not substantially different to Dunblane Tennis Club where Judy Murray took her young boys to play in the early 90s. Participation is key, and building a broader player base now will put British tennis in a healthier position for the future. Conrad Brunner, www.qpltc.co.uk

News from the latest Local Action Team meeting......

Update on Queen’s Park Local Action Team The Local Action Team met at the end of November at the Hanover pub in Queen’s Park Road. News from the Park

It was reported that volunteer work is needed on the old bowling green, so that footballers can play safely. There have been problems with vandals dumping bins in the pond and nasty mess around dog bins. Anti-Social Behaviour

It was noted that swift removal of graffiti from the Pepper Pot seems to deter artists. There has been an increase in dog poo on footpaths, especially Tower Road and East Drive. Freshfield Road Traffic and Crossing

Faye Bridgwater, who presented a petition for a pedestrian crossing in Freshfield Road to the council last March, said that a report from the council’s Highways department was due, but the pedestrian crossing was not expected to be included. The meeting agreed that the crossing needed to be campaigned for, for the many members of the community who need it, eg for schools, the post office, doctors’ surgery, pharmacy and bus

stops. Parents at St Luke’s Primary School would be prepared to fundraise if necessary. It was hoped that Highways would consult the community BEFORE making a decision. Ward Councillors’ Report

Artist/Illustrator

Cllr Karen Barford reported a big caseload for the councillors, on anti-social behaviour, adult social care, highways, buses, noise and planning matters. The Cuthbert pub has been listed as an ACV (asset of community value). This means that the current owners needed to notify the council if they wished to sell and the Cuthbert Community Buyout Group had a six-month period to raise the money. Street sweeping rounds are to be altered; the LAT believe individual sweepers with their own range are more likely to be effective. The NEW Eastern Road highway opposite Leach Court is collapsing. It was hoped that the contractors would come back and repair it. Doctors’ Surgeries

Cycle Prints from £40.00 Excellent gifts for all cycle enthusiasts!

07908585703

www.peterspells.co.uk

All local doctors’ surgeries appear to be oversubscribed. Some are in unsuitable premises and problems were reported with getting an appointment or getting on the list. The meeting suggested that this was not sustainable and the councillors should report the situation to the Health & Wellbeing Board and Healthwatch. It was regretted that a new surgery proposed on land at the corner of Queen’s Park Road and Queen’s Park Terrace does not appear to be going ahead.
