Belle Vue Hall
This large building, photographed in January 1967, was Percival Boxall, the developer of Percival Terrace.
It was built in the early 19th century and is mentioned in Le 1845, being described as “near the hospital”. In later directo so it may be that at one time its grounds extended down to which it later formed part, is of much later construction, da was demolished and replaced in 1968 with the Belle Vue Co garden wall still remains.

Featuring local person Caan Walls...
Queen’s Park Person: Caan Walls
Caan Walls lives in Rochester Street in Bakers Bottom and until February of this year was Membership Manager at the Royal Pavilion. He has recently left to take up a new position at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Tell us about your time at the Royal Pavilion…
I’ll always remember my first visit to the Royal Pavilion as a young boy with my grandfather and sister. The smell of the carpets and colours of the wallpapers never really left me. But like so many who grew up in Brighton I probably didn’t visit again for another 15 years or so. After university in London I moved back and started working at the Royal Pavilion. From running school sessions to holding Regency banquets I’ve had the chance to do so much here. A couple of years ago I took over management of the friends/membership scheme. Meeting with donors and supporters has shown me just how much people in Brighton & Hove really care about this incredible building. It’s great to think that just a short time ago we had only 900 members and today can boast over five times that number.
What will your new role be at Kew Gardens? I’ll be doing almost exactly the same thing. But with over 80,000 members I’m sure I’ll have my work cut out. Kew is an international leader in environmental research and conservation. The Gardens house Kew Palace - the childhood home of the great patron of the Royal Pavilion: George IV.
Also in the Gardens stands the Great Pagoda, 50m high and erected in 1762. Each roof of the pagoda was originally covered with ceramic tiles and adorned with large dragons; a story is still propagated that they were made of gold and were reputedly sold by George IV to settle his debts which accumulated as a result of building the expensive Royal Pavilion. In fact the dragons were made of wood, painted gold, and simply rotted away over time. How long have you lived in Queen’s Park?
I moved to Rochester Street in 2011. The location is very near where my parents grew up and very close to where my grandparents still live. The houses in ‘Bakers Bottom’ were built between 1865-1885 and they have a lot of character. There is even a small lane at the end of Rochester Street which is believed to have medieval origins. Shortly I’ll be moving to Guildford Street near Brighton Station in the hope of making the morning commute to Kew somewhat more bearable but that little house on Rochester Street will always hold a place in my memory no less special than my memories of the most magnificent house in Brighton: The Royal Pavilion.

City Reads announce their 2016 book choice.....
City Reads 2016 – The Good Son by Paul McVeigh Brighton & Hove’s chosen BIG READ for 2016 is “The Good Son” by Paul McVeigh, as City Reads becomes part of the Brighton Festival’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
“The Good Son” is a bitter-sweet tale, set in 1980s Belfast. Mickey Donnelly is smart, which isn’t a good thing in his part of town. Despite having a dog called Killer and being in love with the girl next door, everyone calls him ‘gay’. It doesn’t help that his best friend is his little sister and that everyone knows he loves his ma more than anything in the world. Sarah Hutchings, Artistic Director of City Reads, said: “This outstanding debut from Brighton-based Northern Irish writer Paul McVeigh was the perfect choice as this year marks the centenary of the Easter Rising, a rebellion that led to the eventual signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the creation of Northern Ireland, which is where the story is set. I defy anyone not to fall in love with its protagonist Mickey Donnelly. I hope you love it as much as we do.” From its launch on World Book Day (3 March) to the final event at Brighton Festival on 29 May, there’s a
wide range of events encouraging residents across the city to get reading and start talking. Highlights include: an Irish Whiskey Tasting on St Patrick’s Day (17 March), with readings from The Good Son and live music, a special screening on 24 April of Pat O’Connor’s 1984 film Cal, and The City Reads Book Quiz returns on 27 April.
Danny Wallace’s “Hamish and the WorldStoppers” has been chosen for Young City Reads. For more information, visit cityreads.co.uk

Park News... Here is an update from The Friends of Queen’s Park...
Park Ranger Funding Secured for Queen’s Park but Tennis Club Faces Cuts
Park Ranger Lindsay Cattanach with local volunteers in Queen’s Park
The council has announced that the city’s threatened Park Ranger service - including the position here in Queen’s Park - will be retained. It was feared that spending cuts would force Queen’s Park to lose its full time park ranger, a position held by Lindsay Cattanach since the 1990s. Lindsay is a popular and active member of the Parks service and is a founding member of The Friends Of Queen’s Park.

Nine park rangers, including Lindsay, were informed by text message before Christmas that six faced losing their jobs. After significant local protests, it now appears that seven will keep their positions, with two taking voluntary redundancy.
Warren Morgan, leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “We will still employ seven park rangers, and an animal welfare post to prosecute dog attacks, despite Government cuts.” Morgan also stressed that this was recurring funding, so should not be under threat in the next round of spending cuts. There will be a reduction in total park ranger hours, from 8.22 hours to 7.22 hours. FQP’s Chris Lowe said: “Personally, I think this is a better outcome than anyone was expecting.” Elsewhere, it now appears that Queen’s Park Tennis Club will lose its council funding as a result of cuts to the tennis service across the city. A recent council meeting declared that cuts of £200,000 would be required in 2017 with the majority coming from the cost of maintaining the city’s 72 tennis courts - in the region of £144,000.
QPLTC is one of the 11 clubs that make up the Brighton & Hove LTA tennis league. “Parks tennis has been flying the flag for affordable and competitive community tennis for nearly 90 years,” says QPLTC club secretary Joel Pearcey. Losing the council subsidy raises the possibility that QPLTC, a volunteer-run club, will need to become self-funding in the near future. Pearcey said: “We should see this as an opportunity for our club. We can make it thrive. We remain committed to affordable annual membership, so we ask local tennis players to join up, play some tennis, make new friends and secure the future of the club.” Friends Of Queen’s Park: @FndsQueensPkBtn Queen’s Park Lawn Tennis Club: @qpltc Conrad Brunner

Following on from the article we ran in January...
Stories of Teenage Love, Loss and Rebellion for Free Oral History App In our January issue we shared the news of a Brighton & Hove oral history project which has been supporting students from Longhill School to recruit, interview and photograph people with a story to tell about being a teenager in Brighton & Hove in the 40s, 50s & 60s.
Since then, the Giddy project has staged four Memory Days attracting 33 people to come and tell their stories of giddy love, loss and rebellion – all of which will be used to create a free oral history app. Using GPS navigation technology, the Giddy app will take users on an alternative walking tour of the city, punctuated by the personal histories straight from the mouths of the people who lived them.
Histories such as those told by the Brighton man who, after a gig in 1969, met Jimi Hendrix in a beaten-up MG at the Dome stage door. He recounts how, after having his tambourine signed by the man himself, he was chased by a gaggle of screaming fans through the North Laine, narrowly missing being mobbed.
Also, the lady who told of finding first love and first kisses in Preston Park at the age of 13, and was subsequently forbidden by her parents to see her boyfriend again. Forty years later she managed to find him online and they’ve been together ever since. And the Kemptown-based man who described his passion for fashion and music and how it led him to Brighton clubland and eventually discovering his gay sexuality. Carina Westling of The Nimbus Group, the Brighton arts collective behind Giddy, says: “We wanted to use digital technology to create something that celebrates the stuff of life that unites us as humans; that reveals our individuality but also highlights universal themes associated with youth that span the generations.
All work is guaranteed and fully insured
Oral history offers a perspective of the past that stands outside the received wisdom of the history books. Our intention for Giddy is to bring history to life in such a way that the young (or not so young) people who hear these stories will never look at older people in quite the same way again.” Giddy will be launching as part of Brighton Festival in May. To find out more and keep up to date with the project as it progresses, visit: www. facebook.com/Giddy-Brighton, and follow @NimbusGrp on Twitter

St Mary’s Church is near by and is a community hub as well as a place of worship....
Welcome to St Mary’s Church! Have you wondered what lies behind those somewhat forbidding red brick walls at the corner of St James’s Street and Upper Rock Gardens? Many of our visitors are amazed. If you’ve never entered St Mary’s, please do.
What’s going on at St Mary’s? Lots! Our services are listed below and St Mary’s hosts frequent concerts and recitals (many of which are free), community events such as the St James’s Community Action Group’s get-togethers, wine tastings by Butler’s Wine Cellar and plays from the Brighton Fringe. Currently, Alistair Appleton is holding a Mindfulness course in the church on Thursday evenings and there’s a fitness dance course on Tuesdays. Yoga will soon be starting on Wednesdays.
Regular weekly events include the Purlers knitting group on Mondays from 10.30 - 12.30. Materials, encouragement, expert tuition, tea, coffee and chat all provided. And you are very welcome to come and just chat. Even a piano player if we’re lucky. There’s also a free English conversation class on Friday mornings from 10am to noon. It’s a great way to make friends if you’re new in the UK and struggling to make yourself understood. St Mary’s is becoming a training ground for young performers! Opera singer and mentor Arlene Rolph runs weekly singing lessons at the church and also occasional musical theatre workshops and masterclasses for children and young adults. Last autumn Young Actors Group, a Brighton acting school and talent agency, began weekly drama courses for budding actors. We also host choir rehearsals and offer an affordable recording space for young performers.
There’ll be a special Mothering Day service on Sunday 6th March, which starts at 10am. Our Easter services include Stations of the Cross on Saturday, 19th March at 11am, repeated on Wednesday, 23rd March at 11am, and on Wednesday, 23rd March there’s our annual
