Featuring our local tennis club...
Join Your Local Tennis Club It has been a difficult spring for tennis in Brighton & Hove with the news that the council will withdraw funding for community tennis courts in 2017. One of the options discussed is for local courts to be administered by an outside group, taking control of all 70 public courts across the city.
A decision was taken at the Queens Park Tennis Club AGM in March to investigate the option of becoming an independent tennis club, run as a selffunding volunteer-run organisation. This initiative is being led by club secretary Joel Pearcey, with help from a team of current members.

“QPLTC has a strong membership list but, looking to the future, now would be a good time for players to support their local club. The annual fees remain fantastically good value at £60 a year for adults and much less for juniors,” says Joel. It would be the aim of QPLTC to remain an active member of the Brighton & Hove Lawn Tennis Association, to encourage local membership and to

Just down the road in Kemptown...
Kemptown Carnival Returns on June 4th 2016 The largest free street arts event in the South East, the Kemptown Carnival, makes a welcome return on 4th June after a year’s sabbatical, writes its chairman Geoffrey Bowden. With the support of Arts Council England, the parade and the footprint of the Carnival has been expanded and will feature over 800 performers. Attracting over 25,000 visitors from the city and beyond, the Carnival will be launched by the Mayor of Brighton & Hove Cllr Pete West and opens with the Parade of Flowers.
There will be eight live music stages and performance areas featuring some of Britain’s finest musicians, choirs and dance troupes. Outside St George’s Church there is a children and family entertainment area, including performers, creative workshops, face painting and fairground rides. However, if you like a bit of slapstick, there’s the return of the Grand Custard Pie Fight. Apart from the entertainment over 100 stalls with traders, community organisations and charities will be vying for your attention.
However, to make such a large event possible it also needs the support of the people of Brighton and Hove. We are running a Crowd Funding drive. To find out more visit: https://www.gofundme.com/nbpa36xj To find out more about the event and how to get involved visit the website www.kemptowncarnival.com

Here we feature local musician Rachel Fryer....
Local Person Rachel Fryer Bringing Live Music to Queen’s Park A small cultural renaissance is taking place in Queen’s Park and it’s all down to local musician Rachel Fryer. The Music & Wine Concert Series takes place alternate Fridays at St Luke’s Church and has made high quality music performances a regular fixture in the neighbourhood. Rachel, a talented concert pianist who has performed at leading venues throughout Europe, founded the series almost by chance when she first moved to Queen’s Park ten years ago.
She was seeking out local venues with good pianos and was fortunate enough to come across St Luke’s. She said: “Once I saw the beautiful Steinway there, combined with the lovely acoustics, it seemed an ideal venue for performances.” The first concerts took place in 2005 but it was only when the church installed heating three years ago that concerts could be held year-round.
Rachel – who is the series’ Musical Director as well as founder – aims to create varied schedules that feature the talents of up-and-coming and local musicians as well as internationally-acclaimed performers. She said: “Listening to your favourite music on your headphones is great, but being in the moment and seeing the music being created in front of you is an entirely different – and more exciting – experience. I want to make live music more accessible, so our concerts are relaxed affairs, with a glass of wine and a spoken introduction by the musicians. Plus, of course, great performances. That's why people will come out on a rainy evening to St Luke’s!”
Rachel, who has a Masters in Advanced Performance from the Royal College of Music, is an acclaimed soloist who performed Bach’s Goldberg Variations at last year’s Brighton Fringe. She is also much in

demand as an accompanist, described by one musician as “the best”.
Rachel and her partner Adam – also a professional musician – now live in Newhaven. They have a twoyear-old daughter and Rachel admits it’s sometimes hard to juggle professional work with family commitments. “My life has changed somewhat but I feel it’s important for all of my family to keep playing they wouldn't want to be around me if I wasn’t!”
Rachel’s next performance at the church is on May 13 where she’ll be performing with local violinist Andrew Roberts, a member of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. The programme will include pieces by 20th century composers Josef Suk, Einojuhani Rautavaara and Rebecca Clarke, as well as favourites by Debussy and Prokofiev. Andrew says: “It is rare to find such an intuitive and inspiring musical partner as Rachel and I am really excited to be performing with her at St Luke's." Conrad Brunner
