Welcome to Queen’s Park Living!

This magazine has to be put together two weeks ahead of distribution. With so much uncertainty at the moment due to the coronavirus, there is a high possibility that some of the events and classes mentioned in our April issue may not go ahead, so please do check before attending.

We still have all our usual articles for you this month and our featured local person is Tamsin Shasha, who will be staging a play in her St Luke’s Road garden during the Brighton Fringe in May. Let’s hope for some bright weather so that if everything else is cancelled we can at least get out for a walk! The Queen’s Park Living Team info@queensparkliving.co.uk www.queensparkliving.co.uk

Meet a local resident who will be performing at the Brighton Fringe in May…

Local Author... Tamsin Shasha

Tamsin Shasha lives in St Luke’s Road. She is an award-winning theatremaker and manager of Actors of Dionysus who will be performing at this year’s Brighton Fringe. How long have you lived in Queen’s Park?

I’ve lived here for nearly eight years and before that in Cuthbert Road for ten - I really love the area and proximity to the park, sea and the Downs. Tell us more about Actors of Dionysus…

aod is a Brighton-based touring theatre company and charity that specialises in new adaptations of ancient Greek drama and new writing inspired by myth. We’ve been going over 25 years (gulp!) and moved from the beautiful city of York to the dynamo that is Brighton in 2003 and haven’t looked back.

What will the group be performing at Brighton Fringe? We’re performing a new play called Savage Beauty, which I’ll be writing further to a period of Arts Council funded research and development. It’s inspired by Antigone and other ancient Greek dramas and is a site-specific piece performed in our garden with the world music choir Vocal Explosion. It also has a strong environmental message and is combined with an extensive community engagement programme of singing and gardening workshops (for young children and over 50s). Please get in touch with us if you’d like to participate: info@ actorsofdionysus.com

You are in another Fringe show, at the Spiegeltent. Tell us about that… It’s called Everything I See I Swallow by Shasha &

CCA AL LL FFRR L FFOO Q E RR QU E U O E AA O TE E TE

Taylor Productions and we took it to the Edinburgh Fringe last year where we won two awards and were also featured in the top 50 shows in The Stage for 2019. It’s a study of female empowerment and shifting generational attitudes to sex and feminism, fusing theatre, circus and shibari – the erotic art of Japanese rope bondage!

What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love running and representing Brighton & Hove Athletics Club when I can. I also enjoy singing with Vocal Explosion and learning new songs. But one of my biggest passions is gardening and I’m looking really forward to the Spring and spending more time outdoors preparing for Savage Beauty in May. Savage Beauty will be performed in St Luke’s Road from 1-3 May at 8.45pm and Everything I See I Swallow is at the Spiegeltent from 11–13 May at 9pm. For more information and tickets, visit brightonfringe.org or phone 01273 917272. A planning application by Real Patisserie…

Queen’s Park toilet could become a café... Real Patisserie, who have five shops in Brighton, have submitted an application to Brighton & Hove City Council to change a disused derelict public toilet in West Drive, Queen’s Park, into a café/bakery, with the creation of a decking area for outside seating. The café would be called Open Bakery and would sell artisan bread, savouries, sweet pastries and hot drinks, all hand-made on-site. Real Patisserie say they would use locally sourced fresh meat products, and organic eggs and milk in all their products, but with affordable prices. On the design, Real Patisserie say in their application: “The plans incorporate an arrangement of frosted glass wall blocks - added for practical and aesthetic reasons. They are extremely tough to safeguard against vandalism while allowing more light to the premises and adding a lightness to the structure of the building which is otherwise very concrete.” More information can be found on the council planning register at planningapps. brighton-hove.gov.uk – search for application BH2020/00536.

Part of the May Artists Open Houses festival - a citywide event…

Art around Queens Park... Artists and makers living around Queens Park will be opening their homes to show their work in the Artists Open Houses (AOH2020) festival. Woohoo. It’s nearly May. The most exciting month in Brighton’s calendar is almost here and on this side of town we will be hosting the wonderful Kemptown Arts Trail, part of Brighton’s famous Artists Open Houses. This year the Trail is on for the first four weekends of May. It is a brilliant idea that allows you to visit artists in their homes and studios and view hundreds of pieces of original art. There are paintings, ceramics, jewellery, photography, illustration, textiles, sculpture and so much more!

The Artists Open Houses brochure is available now all over the city. We like to peruse it at leisure and bookmark what jumps out, planning our route to see as many houses as possible each weekend. A few are

even open on the bank holidays. Locals should look out too for the pocket-sized Kemptown Arts Trail leaflet with a great map. Dates, opening times and special events differ slightly from house to house, so do check in the brochure, our leaflet or the website at www.aoh. org.uk before setting out.

Faye Bridgwater is going solo and showing her vibrant landscape paintings and pottery inspired by the Downs and Whitehawk Hill. Fay Hughes at “Art at No. 7” reworks vintage textiles, ‘drawing’ with scissors. She is showing with ten artists with, she says, ‘something for everyone’. Charlotte Macpherson is a fashion photographer known for her portraiture. She will be hosting a photobooth at “The Photographer's Greenhouse" along with 12 sustainably minded artists showing in the house and garden. Tracy Walker and Floppy Toast Design Studio at “The Pink House” will be hosting their first Open House showing typographic art prints, abstract paintings and stationery. Ian Daniels at “Forty Two” will be showing his fascinating abstract paintings exploring the hypnotic power of the horizon.

The Kemptown Arts Trail starts in leafy Queens Park. From there it goes down through Kemptown towards the Marina. You could make a whole day of it, strolling from house to house, browsing a stunning array of work, chatting with artists and makers and taking your morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea along the way. Many Open Houses welcome children, a few are wheelchair accessible and most are pet friendly, but please check first. We’re looking forward to seeing you. And we’re on-line too at kemptownarts.org.uk/ or follow us @ artistshouses @aoh2020

Nature…

Q

News of a council consultation…

This is from local group Saving Species…

Would you adopt a tree?

Looking after the little things If you are getting out into the garden this spring remember to look after the little things - our insects. These are dying at an alarming rate (75% in the last 25 years).

Residents are being asked if they would like to adopt a tree or possibly become trained tree wardens.

The ideas are included in a council consultation as part of a strategy to save and develop the city’s historic tree population. City Parks, the council’s open spaces team, also want your views on planting more trees, off-street parking, dropped kerbs and tackling tree-destroying infections. Insects are inextricably intertwined with our fate and that of the planet: as a food source for birds and mammals, as pollinators for food production, as waste recyclers and as soil improvers; their loss is proving catastrophic.

We call them ‘pests’ and we use ‘pesticides’ to protect our plants. Our supermarket and garden centre shelves are filled with these poisons, killing not only the ‘pest’ but killing bees, other insects, contaminating the soil, water, fish, humans and other animals. In France these are all banned for amateur use. Stop buying them and they will stop stocking them. Let’s make our gardens a refuge for nature. We may come to love the little critters; in the meantime there’s lots you can do without chemicals: www.pan-uk.org/gardening-without-pesticides/ Save our insects by signing this petition: www.pan-uk.org/take-pesticideproducts-off-supermarket-shelves/

Music & Wine have three concerts in April…

Our column from the local WI…

Music and Wine at St Luke’s

Hanover Queens WI

We have three concerts this month, after which we’ll be taking a break for the Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe. The next concert after that will be June 5th.

What a fun-packed evening with Kate Adams from Bollymoves.

Anyssa Neumann

On Friday 3rd April we welcome from London for the first time an a cappella vocal group On That Note. They will perform two sets from a range of genres, including music by Pierre Passereau, Eric Whitacre, Duke Ellington and spirituals arranged by Moses Hogan. On Friday 17th April award-winning British pianist Phillip Leslie will perform works including Bela Bartok’s Piano Sonata (1926) and Debussy’s virtuoso L’Isle Joyeuse. Our final concert in this series is on Friday 24th April. Bassbaritone Timothy Dickinson will present with pianist Anyssa Neumann a programme which draws on the vein of music and poetry inspired by Miguel de Cervantes’s epochal character, Don Quixote, including works by Ravel, Ibert, Massenet and de Falla. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, at 7.30pm. Tickets £7 / £5 under-25s / under-16s free. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. For more information, please visit www.musicandwineatstlukes.com or contact musicandwineatstlukes@gmail.com.

She shared basic hand and body moves we could all master and provided bindi and bangles with great music to move to. A return visit is a must - especially for those of us that missed it.
