Meet Councillor Nick Childs

It’s holiday time for many of us in August, so we hope you have plenty of time to read your copy of Queen’s Park Living.

Page 9 Kemptown Bookshop

This month we feature one of the three new councillors for Queen’s Park, Nick Childs, who tells us what he hopes to achieve in the area. We hear about a great new project by the Kemptown Bookshop in St George’s Road called Reading Aloud, which aims to alleviate loneliness. We also have news of Brighton College’s plans for a new Sports and Sciences building.

An interview with one of the new councillors for Queen’s Park...

Meet Councillor Nick Childs...

Nick Childs was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Queen’s Park and is also Deputy Leader of the Council. Do you live in this part of Brighton?

Yes. I have lived on the border of Queens Park and Hanover for over 11 years. My family and I have and do attend schools/nursery schools, pool, park and church in the ward. Tell us about your background...

I moved to Brighton 11 years ago and love living here. I have worked as trade union official for an education union for many years.

What made you want to become a councillor?

As a democratic socialist, I want to give a voice back to our communities, tackle poverty and inequality and make sure more services in the City are run by the council as opposed to being privatised and outsourced.

have much time to myself, but I enjoy relaxing with my family, walking on the Downs and listening to podcasts whilst jogging. I do like a pint or two of real ale!

My first priority as Chair of the Children and Young People and Skills Committee is to visit every school in the ward and meet parents, teachers and pupils. I want to do as much as possible to support our great schools and to reduce inequality and child poverty.

GAVIN GRAHAM

What do you hope to achieve in the Queen’s Park area?

Going forward, we need to look at how to improve and regenerate the St James Street area. I will also be lobbying to have our children’s play areas in Queens Park and Tarner renovated and to try and improve recycling rates in the ward. What are your interests outside politics?

Outside of my trade union and council work I don’t

Kemptown Bookshop launches new Reading Aloud programme...

The award-winning independent Kemptown Bookshop has launched a new programme aimed at alleviating loneliness in the elderly or isolated. By pairing people up with volunteers who will visit and read aloud to them once a week, the project aims to help book lovers who find that they can’t easily access libraries or bookshops any more or who struggle to get out and about. Darion Goodwin, owner of the Kemptown Bookshop, says: “We know that loneliness and isolation are a growing problem amongst the elderly and we know there are a lot of people who, for whatever reason, can’t readily access a bookshop or library, so we decided to see how we could help.” Darion discussed the issue with charity Age UK and, after they approved his plans, went about setting the scheme up. Volunteers are interviewed and paired up with people in their local area, though travel expenses are paid if public transport is used. A full

support pack has been prepared for volunteers which includes preprepared reading materials and training is given.

Darion Goodwin in the Kemptown Bookshop

The bookshop is recruiting volunteers to visit people and read to them for an hour or two each week for an initial six-week period and is also inviting people to nominate someone they feel would benefit from the scheme. Anyone interested in volunteering or nominating someone for a visit can call Darion on 01273 682159 or visit the bookshop at 91 St George’s Road, Brighton, Sussex, BN2 1EE.

This month’s column from the local WI...

Three concerts this month at St Luke’s Church…

Hanover Queens WI

Music and Wine at St Luke’s

No meeting of the Hanover Queens this month – but we’ll meet again on Thursday 12th September.

On Friday August 2nd violinist Sabina Virtosu is joined by violist Raisa Zapryanova to present a programme of duos for violin and viola.

Hanover Queens (Hanover and Queen’s Park) are a small friendly bunch of women with members from all over the city. We meet every second Thursday of the month from 7.30 to 9.30pm. A varied programme of speakers and activities this past year – from Zumba and Alexander Technique to Punch and Judy, a barrister and a local author - and Lynn Ruth, 85, our oldest comedienne, had us entranced for the evening. We actively support and fundraise for Stopover, local organisation for homeless young women, and will also be supporting Small Acts of Friendship – who help improve the lives of older people in the Royal Sussex County Hospital. Always keen to attract new members so come along on the night or check us out on Facebook or at wihanoverqueens@gmail.com. Recipe of the month Summer slaw Shred white and red cabbage; add celeriac chopped into matchsticks, finely sliced red onion, grated carrot, quartered radishes. Add dressing – eg half fat crème fraiche, wholegrain mustard and cider vinegar - and parsley and mix. (Other options - fennel, beetroot and apple.)

On Friday August 16th Jon Byrne will be giving his debut recital at St Luke’s, performing Beethoven’s Pathétique sonata, alongside nocturnes by Chopin, preludes by Rachmaninov, Liszt and Carl Vine.

Finally, on Friday August 30th we welcome back Illuminate, a new project to promote the work of emerging women composers and performers. The Ethel Smyth piano trio (violin, cello, piano) will be performing Illuminate’s composers in residence, alongside historical works including Morfydd Owen's 1915 piano trio. Includes short pre-concert talk at 7pm. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church and start at 7.30pm. Tickets £7 / £5 unwaged and low waged / under-16s free. Wine and refreshments served. News of a local planning application...

Brighton College plans new Sports and Sciences building

Brighton College have submitted a planning application to demolish their existing Sports Hall, Chowen building, Blackshaw building and Pavilion and to build a new three-storey Sports and Sciences building, with an additional storey primarily below ground. There would be a five-lane swimming pool on the lowest level of the building. A section of the boundary wall facing Sutherland Road would be removed to create a new car park entrance with a car lift to an underground parking area.

Brighton College want to bring their facilities up to date as part of their strategic vision. They say their current sports hall and science laboratories are too small and require modernisation. The new building would replace buildings constructed in the 1970s and 80s. It would be a contemporary design with a predominantly glass façade, 3.3 metres lower than the historic Sir Gilbert Scott buildings. The roof is proposed to be green and partly occupiable. As well as photovoltaic solar panels, it

will provide a seating area and a 70-metre outdoor running track, which will not be visible from the street. 33.7 metres of the existing flint boundary wall along Sutherland Road would have to be demolished for the new building and to provide access to the proposed underground car park. The new building itself would provide the primary boundary along Sutherland Road. For full details of the application or to make a comment, visit planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk and search for application number BH2019/01575.

News from the council...

New bins for the seafront The city’s seafront could soon have self300 new bins in a bid to increase recycling rates and prevent plastics from ending up in the sea.

hel

The bins will have three separate sections in different colours: Brighton Borough blue p for plastic bottles and cans, Hove Borough maroon for glass, and black skil for ordinary rubbish. They should not be used for barbecue materials as these canlsc create a fire hazard. There are special barbecue bins near the sections of h.c the beach where barbecuing is allowed. It is expected that the first bins will o.ube placed along the central beach area, with the rest being rolled out k they may be soon after. If the bins prove successful, used throughout the city.

Last month we heard about “Hidden Sussex”, a new anthology celebrating Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic voices. This month we hear from one of the contributors, Queen's Park resident Sheila Auguste...

Good Girl in Queen’s Park...

In ‘Good Girl’, the story published in the Hidden Sussex anthology, I imagine what it would be like if my dad was alive and came to visit me in Brighton from his home in Stratford East London where I was brought up. He died when I was 21 and he was 53. Perhaps if I had lived in Queen’s Park when I wrote 'Good Girl', I might have included this… Dad leans back on the bench, his face up to the sun, watching the gigantic puffs of cotton wool as they trail across the sky chased by a warm sultry wind. The weather is being kind, sub-tropical in fact. I watch the reflection of the clouds in the pond. He looks around the park, it’s really showing off today, in its picture perfect, green glory.

Sheila Auguste

“Reminds me of the Botanic Gardens back home,” he says. He means back home in Castries, St Lucia. I too have seen these gardens, with Mum. Although I was born in England, we’d moved back to St Lucia when I was 10 for about a year. “Yeah, George V Park it was called.”

“How do you remember that? Such a long time ago.” “I remember a lot about St Lucia, Dad, sometimes I

think that’s how I’ve ended up living on the coast, so close to the sea.” I know other people with a Caribbean connection who live in Queen’s Park. A man from Barbados who married a woman from Yorkshire, a woman from Montserrat, another from Jamaica. There are people from everywhere here in Queen’s Park.

But it’s the trees in the park I introduce him to. “Meet Charlie and Rosa.”

He shows no surprise. I’ve been doing this since I was a child. He just steps back and takes them in top to bottom and inclines his head nodding. “I’ve known them for twenty years.”
