“We’ve had our flu jab.”

Frveeryeone

for e 5 aged 6 r e and ov

Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

Ask your GP about the free flu jab.

The Victoria Baths The Victoria Baths seen here were built in Park Street in 1887, at a reported cost of £5,743, and opened in the following year. They were so named because building commenced in Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year. Being located in what was then a poor district, with no baths in the small dwellings, they were extensively used until well into the present century, when prices were 6d for a first class bath, and 3d for a second class, towels provided, with soap at 2d a tablet. As the area improved, the baths were used less and less, although about 15,000 baths were taken in 1978. This view, taken in 1980, shows the entrance to the baths and the commemorative plaque and scroll. Sloane Court now stands on the site.

We received this interesting and forthright articel from Friend of Queens

Queen’s Park must not Se Envy. The green-eyed monster. It is not a noble virtue to covet one’s neighbour’s ass. And yet I believe that a desire to match or exceed the assets of our fellow citizens can potentially bring some good, and may even lead to a better, brighter future for Queen’s Park.

Let me explain. Since becoming a member of The Friends Of Queen’s Park, I have become interested in the activities of similar community groups around the country. I discovered, for instance, that there are several ‘FoQPs’ across the UK, in Glasgow, Bolton, Swindon and Chester, to name just a few. And when you peruse their websites, you see that their parks enjoy similar features to our own: tennis courts, playgrounds, wild gardens, clock towers, cafés, water features etc. Their summer events bear comparison with our own dog shows, family festivals and outdoor dramatics. It is true that few urban parks in the UK can match our splendid Georgian landscaping, or Grade II listed architectural features, or fine collection of noble elm trees. Yet several boast unique assets which do them great credit. For instance, there’s the new open air theatre in Queen’s Park, Glasgow; the first class cricket pitch at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield; and the petting zoo in Queen’s Park, London. There was one feature they all share which caught my eye, casually at first and then with growing envy. It was the fact that virtually all the Queen’s Parks I came across had a small but distinctive green logo on their websites, the Green Flag Award for parks and green spaces. Their home pages are illuminated by celebratory photographs featuring smiling locals as they hold their Green Flag aloft. Hooray! Our sister parks are all verified award winners, acknowledged green space champions. Queen’s Park, Brighton, I am sorry to tell you, has no such Green Flag. There are over 1,200 Green Flag Parks in the UK, awarded by a national body for ‘high environmental standards, setting a benchmark of excellence in recreational green areas’. Edinburgh City Council has 26 Green Flags, while there are 287 park awards within Greater London. I’ve walked through Southwark a few times, and am astonished to read that they have 16 Green Flags within that built-up stretch of riverside. Hillingdon Borough Council claims a barely believable 24. Sussex is not quite so blessed. Lewes and Worthing have two each, and Eastbourne one, while Brighton & Hove is home to a respectable seven Green Flag parks, proudly listed on the council website as Easthill Park, Hove Park, Preston Park, Kipling Gardens, Stoneham

ettle for Second Class Status

Park, St Ann’s Well Gardens and The Level. You’ll sense, by now, my curiosity turning into something altogether darker. Peevishness. Hurt. Jealousy. The Level, for heaven’s sake? St Ann’s Well Gardens, across the border in Hove, is almost exactly the same size as Queen’s Park - what on earth have they got that we haven’t? In terms of everything that makes a successful public park, we are - at the very least equal. Except for a Green Flag award. Must we stand by while our blessed plot remains ignored, unrewarded, downgraded? Should Queen’s Park live out its days in that tumbleweed purgatory reserved for non-Green Flag urban parks? The Green Flag award is not just a piece of pseudo corporate window dressing. It does represent a fixed national standard to which a community park of our history and size should automatically aspire. The award system is specifically focused on “maintained” urban areas, so, while they might require certain individual features (eg toilets), the key to a successful application is strong evidence of park maintenance and planning. Furthermore, Green Flag parks need to renew their status on a regular basis - rather like a Michelin star restaurant - so extending the pressure on key stakeholders, such as the council, Friends groups and local volunteers.

The point is that if Green Flag status places extra pressure on us all to make sure the bushes are trimmed, the paths and gates are maintained and the toilets work, then so much the better for the everyday park user, don’t you think? What we really do not want, and cannot reasonably tolerate, is council funds in this city being allocated towards maintaining the status of other Green Flag parks while Queen’s Park is allowed to decay. And now for the good news. Green Flag status for Queen’s Park is, potentially, within our grasp. The current consultation process, being led by the council’s Parks Department with the support of the Friends Of Queen’s Park (Brighton), is going to make that goal attainable. The Master Plan, scheduled to be complete before the end of the year, will incorporate a detailed Management Plan, and that plan can, in turn, form the basis of a Green Flag application for Queen’s Park. There’s work to be done, but having seen the list of requirements, they are quite achievable. The consultation process, in which our Friends group has been so active, has given us a window of opportunity, and we should seize it. By Conrad Brunner. All views are his own.
