Many congratulations to Peter Burrows for his award for services to the Queen’s Park community…
Peter Burrows awarded BEM
Peter Burrows of St Luke’s Church has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year Honours for services to the community of Queen’s Park. Peter is a retired churchwarden and for more than 40 years he has been a recycling leader, a charity fundraiser, and has grown flowers and vegetables to be sold outside the church. He is also an allotment representative for Brighton & Hove City Council. Shelagh McGillicuddy, who nominated Peter for the award, said: “Peter is well known throughout the area. If people in the community don’t know Peter by name, one just has to mention the man with the wheelbarrow and then they know who you mean. Peter has inspired the whole community of Queen’s Park, by his hard working and relentless example to work for the good of other people.
“Peter has raised many thousands of pounds for charity over the last 40 years. This includes at least £1,000 every year for Christian Aid, much more for St Luke’s Church. In collections for Emergency Disaster Relief and the local Martlets Hospice, Peter has also raised many hundreds of pounds. “Peter has created an open and splendid garden in front of St Luke’s Vicarage which is admired by families on their way to and from school, those waiting at the bus stops and so many people who cycle or walk past on their way to work, or the city centre. Peter is often found chatting to the folk of the community as he tends and nurtures the flowers and plants on a regular basis.” We asked Peter how he felt when he heard about the award. He said: “I was shocked and I couldn’t believe it. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve it.”
Queens Park Decorating
When asked what he enjoys so much about his community work, he said: “Selling things, especially outside, and interaction with people and especially newcomers and visitors to the community. The most important thing in my life is my faith in Jesus Christ – my help and guide!”

News from Brighton & Hove City Council of a local consultation on planning rules…
Queen’s Park... Article 4 Direction
The Queen’s Park Conservation Area Character Statement was adopted by the council in September 2018 following public consultation.
This document identified the gradual and cumulative loss of architectural details on the fronts of single dwelling houses as being detrimental to the character and appearance of the conservation area. This includes the change of traditional sash windows to uPVC as well as inappropriate timber windows, modern doors, loss of front boundary walls, modern railings and gates and painting of unpainted brick features. As a result, a recommendation was made in the Character Statement to prepare an Article 4 Direction (planning controls) to halt these harmful changes where they affect the street frontages of houses. Certain minor works and alterations to single dwelling houses can be carried out without planning permission from the council (called ‘Permitted Development’). If the council believes that specific planning problems exist in an area, i.e. that they harm the character of a conservation area, it can make an ‘Article 4 Direction’ for that area, and certain types of development would no longer be exempt from the need for planning permission. It is important to note that no retrospective enforcement action can or would be taken for works (specified in the Article 4 Direction) carried out prior to the introduction of the Article 4 Directions. An Article 4 Direction would mainly apply to single dwellings and small HMOs. Flats and commercial properties already have much more limited permitted development rights. All single dwelling houses located within the Queen’s Park conservation area will be subject to the Article 4 Direction. In deciding whether to introduce Article 4 Directions, the council will take into account comments received during an informal consultation period 3rd February – 16th March 2020. Comments should be made online via the Council’s consultation portal: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk
QUEEN'S PARK CONSERVATION AREA PROPOSED ARTICLE 4 DIRECTION (PLANNING RESTRICTIONS)
The council is consulting local residents on the proposed introduction of additional planning controls on minor alterations to buildings within the Queen's Park conservation area. In deciding whether to introduce Article 4 Directions, the council will take into account comments received during an informal 6-week consultation period from Monday 3 February – Monday 16 March 2020. Representations can be made online via the council's consultation portal consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk

Artists from all over the city take part in the Artists Open Houses Festival...
Calling local artists...
If you are an artist thinking about opening your house for the Artists Open Houses Festival in May 2020, we’ve got the inside stories from three people who made the leap. The Artists Open Houses (AOH) Festival is made up of more than 1,500 artists and makers over 14 local trails. The Kemptown Trail is one of the largest, stretching from Old Steine, up through Queen’s Park and on to Brighton Marina.
So, you’re thinking of joining the largest art festival in the country? The first step is to register with AOH on their website www.aoh.org.uk. Registration opened on 12 December with Early Bird rates. Now is exactly the right time to put your Open House and your work on the map!
The Kemptown Arts Association can help guide you as you are preparing to open your house. We organise the Kemptown trail and produce the local trail map. Three of our members told us about their experience in opening up their homes for the first time. “It’s a mixture of excitement, hard work and trepidation,” says Sophie Wake, winner of Best Open House 2019. Sophie started showing her lively animal paintings with a group of artists, but in her third year she decided to open as a solo show. “With the support of the Kemptown Arts Association, to my delight our Open House was a great success. My fears around opening to the general public were unfounded. It proved to be a great honour to meet and greet all sorts of folk into my home.”
James Foley opened his home in 2019 and came to the Kemptown Arts Association meetings to meet other local artists. “Through the meetings I was guided in opening my first Open House and was able to make contact with artists and invite them to show in my home: painters, printmakers and craft makers whose

work complemented my own pottery very well.” Asked how his first experience went: “We’re already looking forward to the next one!”
Cathy Moss and Rupert Bagilhole first opened their flat two years ago. The high ceilings of their seafront flat allow the walls to be covered in paintings and prints hung in the manner of a salon, drawing in many visitors. “The support of other artists helped. We’ve really enjoyed opening our home as an art space.”
The Kemptown Arts Association gets together once a month to share ideas on how to promote the local trail: www.KemptownArts.org.uk. Membership is £15 a year - it’s a great way to meet other artists in the area. Contact Nick at info@kemptownarts.org.uk for further details and the date of our next meeting. Loraine Hayes

Local news and events... Two concerts at St Luke’s Church in February…
A local group...
Helen Reid
Music and Wine at St Luke’s
Hanover Queens WI
On Friday February 7th we are very lucky to welcome back violinist Oliver Nelson and pianist Vasilis Rakitzis.
A great start to the New Year with our popular quiz night – stimulating and good fun too.
Oliver and Vasilis present four varied works: the lyrical Schubert first Sonatina and impressionistic Ravel Sonata Posthume alongside the vividly individualistic beauty of Delius’ third sonata, and ending with the profundity and structural breadth of Beethoven’s Op.96.
This month we’ll have a speaker from the local Women’s History Group on Thursday 13th February, 7.30 to 9.30pm. We meet every second Thursday of the month at the Church of the Annunciation, 89 Washington Street, BN2 9SR. Pleased with our new venue and the community café room is working well for us.
On Friday February 21st BBC Young Musician and Royal Overseas League piano finalist Helen Reid presents Visions of Night. This programme explores night music from multiple perspectives, creating a thought-provoking journey for the audience. Evocations of Night Balls, Bells and Moths depicted by Poulenc; Night pieces by Schumann; Contemporary works by Michael Berkeley and Martin Butler; and Nocturnes spanning 100 years. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, at 7.30pm. Tickets £7 / £5 under-25s / under-16s free. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served.
For more information, visit www.musicandwineatstlukes.com.
We are a small friendly group, not too traditional and have a varied and interesting programme lined up for the rest of the year. And there’s always tea and usually cake!
Always keen to attract new members fresh faces, new ideas. Do come along if you’d like to give us a try and to find out more. You can also find us on Facebook or contact us on wihanoverqueens@gmail.com.

Local Person...Chloe Bullock
Chloe Bullock lives in the Queen’s Park area and is an interior designer with her own company, Materialise Interiors, specialising in vegan design. How did you come to set up your own company?
Chloe with her client,
Early in my career I was really fortunate to work at The Body Shop’s head office. I was a fairly newly graduated designer. I’d lost my first proper job in the recession of the early 90s - so I wrote to my hero Anita Roddick asking for work experience. I’m Brighton born and bred (like The Body Shop!) and I had followed her progress as I was growing up. The letter worked and I joined the team delivering their ethical global store concepts and specifications for projects globally. Stores were opening in new and growing markets. It was a great experience and I enjoyed 10 educational years working for the company. I even got to work in their Australia/NZ head office for best part of a year. In true Body Shopempowered style - in 2005 I decided to set up on my own, and set up Materialise Interiors.
Kyriakos Baxevanis,
What does a vegan designer have to do differently?
I deliver all the regular interior services to my clients’ briefs - but I avoid the use of animal products and animal-tested paints. This means avoiding leather – suede – skins – wool – silk – down – feathers – fur – and adhesives with animal content. Of course it comes hand in hand with conscious use of materials generally, so I work with the principles of circular economy, as one use is not enough. So I try to reduce the use of materials, re-use elements and specify things that are easier to repair and recycle. By the way - this can still be done luxuriously! In 2017 I was very proud to be the first UK designer to be VEGANDESIGN.ORG CERTIFIED™.

What services can you provide? I can help clients as little or as much as they need. I see regularly that design input saves clients money and prevents waste. So I have services on offer ranging from two-hour consultations to blocks of hours through to full service design.
What is your favourite project that you’ve worked on? I’ve recently worked on local modern Greek restaurant Nostos Hove. They were really open to having sustainable and vegan specifications and I’m so happy with the end result.
What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love spending time with my family and friends, travelling, visiting exhibitions and museums. To find out more, visit materialiseinteriors. com, phone 07799 534685, email chloe@ materialiseinteriors.com or social media @ MaterialiseInt
