Kemp Town Brewery This photograph from 1967 shows the Maltings and Stores, at the corner of Sutherland Road and Eastern Road. William Hallett of Marine Parade founded the brewery about 1850. Later he took into partnership Henry Abbey (after whose family Abbey Road was named) and in the 1860s the Maltings were built adjoining Brighton College. The brewery was successively named Hallett and Abbey’s, Abbey and Sons, Abbey’s Kemp Town and, finally, Kemp Town Brewery. After being acquired by Charrington, brewing ceased here and the sites were sold for redevelopment. The buildings were all removed during 1970. This site is now occupied by Brighton College.

News of the first local concert of the year....
Music and Wine at St Luke’s Winter Series Happy New Year and welcome back after the Christmas break. We’re having a short break and will return at the end of January. On Friday 29th January we will host prize-winning pianist Ryan Drucker from the Royal Northern College of Music. This recital includes Scarlatti sonatas and Schumann’s Fantasie, a colourful and passionate work which reflects the difficult time in the composer’s relationship with his future wife. You will also hear Rachmaninoff ’s Études-Tableaux, one of the most technically demanding works in the repertoire. We will resume our fortnightly concerts thereafter. We are also planning some exciting fundraising events for our piano restoration fund – watch this space for more details. And finally, Music & Wine at St Luke’s is teaming up with The Independent Pub (formerly The Walmer) to offer a unique two-course preconcert meal price £12.95 or 10% off their usual menu – just mention us when you pre-book. http://theindependent.pub/st-lukes-musicwine-set-menu/ The concert takes place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, at 7.30pm. Here is an interesting local project...
Oral History Project
Do you know someone with a story to tell about Brighton in the 1940s-60s? Giddy, a Brighton oral history project, is looking for people who were teenagers during the 1940s-60s to come and share their stories at a series of open workshops – the next one being 20th January 2016, 10am to 2pm, at the Mass Observation Archive at The Keep.
The stories will be used to create a two-part digital project, including a smartphone app and an online archive; and an exhibition – all of which will launch to the public in May 2016. The app will take users on a tour of Brighton, with the personal stories acting as the guide to places of interest, offering a history of Brighton direct from the mouths of the people who lived it. Giddy was conceived by Brighton arts collective The Nimbus Group who have received funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help young people from Longhill High School in Rottingdean to learn new skills in archive research, curating, conservation and oral history interviewing.
Image courtesy of The Argus Archive
Working with the Mass Observation Archive and the Oral History Society, the young people involved will help recruit and interview participants via the open workshops who will share their stories, and then create the app and online archive. Jamie Wyld, co-Director of The Nimbus Group, says they’re looking for people to recount unusual and personal stories: ‘We’ve heard tales of rationing and mods & rockers before, but usually from the perspective of historians and the media. What we’re keen to hear about are stories that young people today can relate to: a first kiss in a dance hall, love in the face of possible German invasion, being gay in the 1950s, and what it was really like to be part of the mod scene here. ‘Each and every generation of young people thinks it’s the only one to have experienced the giddy highs and lows of adolescence – we want to show that this is a universal theme, instilling a greater sense of understanding between young and old whilst preserving some amazing stories which otherwise may well be lost forever.’ Giddy’s organisers hope those who do decide to come along to share their stories will also take along a photo or other piece of memorabilia associated with that period of their lives. These will be used alongside archive images of Brighton & Hove through the war and post-war decades to create a fascinating online archive for future generations to enjoy. To find out more about how you can get involved, like Giddy on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ giddy-brighton, and follow on Twitter @NimbusGrp #GiddyBrighton

Get out and get active in 2016...
Hit Away those January Blues Too much Christmas pud? Too many mince pies? As we know, the beginning of a New Year is a great time to start a new challenge, set a goal or try a new sport.
And although tennis may not spring to mind as a game to take up in the depths of winter, the members of Badgers Tennis Club in the heart of Kemp Town would definitely disagree! Founded in 1895, Badgers in Church Place is one of the oldest tennis clubs in the country and week in week out it’s a hive of activity with an impressive range of social tennis, training sessions, drop-ins, school holiday camps for children and fun tournaments for everyone. And to celebrate the start of 2016, readers of Queen’s Park Living can book a lesson with one of the club’s coaches at a special rate. Head coach Jon Miller said: “Whether you are totally new to tennis or just haven’t played for a while, we would love to see you at Badgers. It’s a very friendly place to come along to and make new friends and get some exercise. You might need a hat and gloves during the winter but the weather doesn’t often get the better of us!”

The club has four courts, including one astro, and floodlights are available to allow play late into the evenings. Club afternoons are held every Saturday and Sunday from 2pm and also on Thursday evenings. Players of all standards are invited to come along and are assured a friendly welcome. There are also opportunities for more competitive players to play in men’s, ladies’ and mixed teams in the Sussex County leagues, and juniors are also well catered for with camps and coaching sessions aimed at improving performance. Apart from the fantastic courts and beautiful “secret garden” setting, the club also has a large purpose-built clubhouse which can be hired for parties and events. It can hold up to 70, has a full bar, comfy sofas and a large dance floor area. There is plenty of room for a DJ or band and the club can organise a late licence. If you would like to book a specially reduced lesson please call Jon Miller on 07805 649342 and mention Queen’s Park Living. Here is a fascinating local exhibition....
Views of Brighton & Hove in the Early 19th Century
Ireland’s Royal Brighton Gardens by George Hunt © Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove
This exhibition of prints and drawings of early 19th century Brighton & Hove at Brighton Museum has been extended until 6th March 2016. The paintings are held in the private collection of Henry Smith and in the collection of Royal Pavilion & Museums. The exhibition shows how Brighton developed from a declining town into a fashionable seaside resort, with rapid expansion helped by the development of the coast road by 1820. There are paintings showing past attractions such as the Chain Pier and some other grand projects which were never begun. One painting shows a proposed grand scheme in 1883 for the head of the Chain Pier to include baths, assembly rooms and restaurants. A design for a Royal Marine Palace would have incorporated the sea as an essential feature and would have surpassed even the Royal Pavilion for splendour. There are also fascinating pictures of buildings which have survived to the present day, such as a lithograph of the Royal Sussex County Hospital from 1841, with a horse-drawn cab waiting outside. The painting shown here is “Ireland’s Royal Brighton Gardens” by George Hunt. The gardens opened in May 1823, and featured a range of activities such as cricket, bowling greens, an aviary, a maze, fairground activities and an artificial lake. However, the gardens soon declined in popularity, James Ireland sold them three years later and they became overgrown. Part of the site is now a private garden for the residents of Park Crescent and you can still see the ornamental gate piers and the wall on the north side of Union Road. The exhibition is on until 6th March at Brighton Museum and Art Gallery in the Royal Pavilion garden (closed on Mondays) and is free with Brighton Museum admission.
