Dunford House, Eastern Road This photograph of Dunford House, Eastern Road, was taken on 17 May 1970. This large house stood between Walpole Road and Upper Abbey Road. Little is known of its early history or when it was built, but for most of its life it was owned by Brighton College. For many years it was used for boarders. In April 1970, it was sold by the College and later demolished. Sadly, during the demolition work, part of the old flint wall in Upper Abbey Road collapsed onto the pavement killing an elderly woman pedestrian. Kemp Town Housing Association later built flats for the elderly on this site.
Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. You can see thousands of more historic pictures of Brighton and Hove at www.regencysociety-jamesgray.com

Q
The first in a series of interviews with the new councillors for Queen’s Park….
Meet Your Local Councillor: Daniel Chapman Daniel was elected in May as a Labour councillor for Queen’s Park. What is your connection to the Queen’s Park area? I have many connections with the ward, I grew up with my mother and great grandmother in Wiltshire House, along Lavender Street and I attended Queen’s Park primary school. I am often recognised, as my first job was working on the checkouts in Safeway (now Morrisons) at the bottom of St James Street. What is your background? Whilst studying Politics and History at Sussex University I worked part time and helped care for my great grandmother. I worked for an education charity for 3 years that linked schools with employers across the country and I currently work for a professional association for teachers.
What made you want to become a councillor? My great grandmother was the secretary for a tenants association and she dedicated much of her time helping others, with even the smallest of issues. I admired what she did and I’ve always felt that I wanted to do the same and I think being a local councillor is one of the best ways to do this.
Daniel Chapman
What do you hope to achieve in the area over the next four years? There are lots of things that I would like to achieve in the ward, one of the issues I know concerns a large number of residents is the recycling and rubbish situation which desperately needs to be addressed. But I think it’s important to help everyone in any way possible no matter how big or small the issue is. What are your interests outside politics? Politics seems to take up a lot of my time at the moment but previously I have travelled around Australia and New Zealand and I’d like to visit more countries. I also love cricket, I’ve even completed an umpiring course. I occasionally enjoy baking cakes too, so if anyone has a good recipe they’d like to recommend, please let me know.
How can people contact you? There are several ways people can contact me or my fellow councillors Karen and Adrian. People can contact me through my email: Daniel.Chapman@brighton-hove.gov.uk or call me on 01273 291353. You can also see what we’re up to through our Facebook group “Queen’s Park Labour”.

Magic In The Park
The library taster collection launched at St Luke’s Church in summer 2013 is still going strong. If you are a member of Brighton & Hove Libraries you can borrow adults’ and children’s books from the micro library.
Don’t forget this summer’s outdoor theatre in Queen’s Park - The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a magical production for all the family.
The library was re-stocked in March 2015 and is unstaffed. A book is provided for borrowers to record their library card number and details of the books they are borrowing. The library is open to the public from 9am-12pm on Wednesdays and 11am-2pm on Thursdays. Church-goers are welcome to use the library after services. If you are not currently a member of Brighton & Hove Libraries, you can join at any Brighton & Hove library or online www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/leisure-and-libraries/libraries/join-library and collect your library card from one of our libraries prior to using the taster collection.
Saturday 4 July 2015
The performance takes place at the Royal Spa, Queen’s Park, at 7pm on Saturday 4 July. Tickets are £12.50 adults, £6.50 children, and can be purchased online at fqpbrighton.net. The show, presented by the creative team at Illyria, features eye-popping magical illusions designed by the world famous magician Paul Daniels. We must, however, warn everyone that this is a splashy-splashy performance in which everything promises to go disastrously wrong. Illyria are anxious for visitors to be aware that “The show features a HUGE amount of water.”

The next in the series of articles written especially for Queens Park Living by local business Furry Friends...
Who Is The Top Dog? Unfortunately we weren’t able to attend this year’s Bark in the Park, however I hear it was as popular as ever. Having been along in previous years and seen the wide range of shapes and sizes, I started wondering more about our pet dogs. A 2014 survey by the Pet Food Manufacturers Association showed that 13 million UK households have pets, with dogs being the most popular choice. There are 9 million dogs living in 24% of our households, ranking highest in sheer numbers after fish, and beating cats into second place in popularity stakes (7.9 million cats in 18% of households). Since 1992 cats were the most popular choice of pet, but the trend for small fashionable dog breeds and ‘designer’ dogs recently helped to tip the balance. The Kennel Club say that between 2001 and 2011 the number of pedigree dog registrations rose by 25%. In January the BBC reported that, based on data held on electric chips in five million dogs, the UK’s favourite dog breed is the Labrador with over half a million tagged. London, the West Midlands and the North West all bucked that trend by choosing the Staffordshire Bull Terrier as their top dog, while people in South Wales, the West Country and Northern Ireland picked the Jack Russell as their perfect pooch. According to this data, the most popular breeds here in Brighton are (in order) the Labrador, Jack Russell, Staffie, Border Collie and Cocker Spaniel. Where space is at a premium, as expected, smaller breeds are popular, whilst in rural and sparsely populated areas larger dogs gain in popularity. (There was no data on mixed breeds; in my opinion the poodle crosses seem to outnumber all other breeds in Brighton and Hove right now!) In late 2014, research carried out by dogsblog.com
July 23rd to August 28th
The Cockapoo – reigning supreme in Brighton and Hove?
showed that over two thirds of UK animal rescue centres saw an increase in the number of rescued dogs over the last year. Common reasons for dogs coming into rescue include training issues, cost of upkeep, underfeeding and failure to treat health problems. It would seem that whilst dogs are becoming increasingly fashionable, not all prospective owners research the breeds they buy or fully understand how much money and effort is required to keep a dog, train it and ensure it lives a fulfilling and harmonious life with its humans. Billie-Jo runs Furry Friends Pet Services with her husband Sam and lives in Hendon Street with dogs Harvey and Mouse. www.furryfriendspetservices.co.uk
Children love the huge range of wonderful activities on offer and the project really makes full advantage of the beautiful park. The children will be playing games and sports, making camps, having welly throwing competitions, cooking and gardening, making and doing, creating lots of noise and mess and most of all having lots and lots of safe healthy fun! Not far from Queens Park this month we feature Eurotiles and Bathrooms...
A must visit venue for your New Tiles and Bathroom If you’re revamping your bathroom or need tiles for your kitchen or conservatory floor, look no further: Eurotiles & Bathrooms is the one place that you ought to visit.
There is a huge selection of tiles ranging in style from large size porcelain ones which are perfect for a modern bathroom or for kitchen, lounge and even patio floors, through mosaics to more traditional 10 x 10cm for kitchens and marble and stone effects for bathrooms. Wood effect tiles are very popular at the moment as the latest technology means that they are virtually indistinguishable from the real thing and they can be used in areas that are prone to damp where real wood would not be suitable, and the showroom has lots of choice of different styles and colours of wood. It is the exclusive stockist of Ca’ Pietra in Sussex giving you access to some fabulous natural stone tiles. There is also a full range of bathroom products on display including furniture, sanitary ware, showers, taps and accessories such as mirrors and heated towel rails. Ege sanitary ware, which comes with a 10-year warranty, is exclusive to Eurotiles & Bathrooms in the UK and they have other stylish brands such as Burlington and Pura Bathrooms.
Most of the range is in stock so you don’t need to plan weeks in advance, you can just come in, choose your products and take them away, or arrange for free local delivery. The Brighton showroom is based on the Freshfields Business Park, near to Screwfix and Benchmarx Kitchens. They offer free parking so you can pull up outside, and knowledgeable, friendly staff to help you decide on the best products for your project. www.eurotilesandbathrooms.com Email: brighton@eurotilesandbathrooms.com; Phone: 01273 605445
