Craven Vale Housing Estate
The area known as Craven Vale, at the end of Sutherland Road, had been used for allotments for nearly sixty years when acquired by Brighton Corporation for houses.
Possession of the land was obtained in September 1952, and the construction of roads was completed in 1953. This photograph looks north-west towards Freshfield Road, when the land was still occupied as allotments. Photographed on 25 February 1952.
Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. You can see thousands of more historic pictures of Brighton and Hove at www.regencysociety-jamesgray.com.

Here is news about a local filmmaker...
The Power of the Atom...and of the Crowd Local filmmaker Vicki Lesley has spent a decade tracing the political history of nuclear power for her forthcoming cinema documentary The Atom: A Love Affair, and is now turning to crowd-funding to help finish the film.
In 2006, nuclear power was just creeping back into the headlines not as the dirty, dangerous bogeyman of Chernobyl and Sellafield but as a clean, green solution to climate change. Vicki Lesley decided to make a film exploring this hugely controversial energy source. Little did she know that this would turn into a life-consuming, 10-year journey that is only now nearing completion - encompassing several major life events including moving to Brighton in 2011 and having her first baby in 2014.
Fast forward to today and it’s not only Vicki’s life that’s changed. The much-vaunted “nuclear renaissance” has failed to take off for a host of reasons, from Fukushima to economics. Nonetheless many people still fervently believe in nuclear power. Yet at the same time of course, many others remain vehemently, passionately opposed. The Atom: A Love Affair tells the inside story of how we got here, combining the tropes of sentimental screen romance with behind-the-scenes political drama from figures like Tony Benn, Ralph Nader and the man who ran EDF in France for 20 years. It’s been a real labour of love, starting as a side project to Vicki’s main job in television before funding from Creative England and a number
Vicki with William Magwood IV, one of the five commissioners on the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
of small shareholders enabled her to go full time on the film in 2012. After a hiatus for the birth of her son, the end is in sight at last, and Vicki is making a final crowdfunding push with a view to finishing and releasing the film this year. Here is your guide to concerts this month plus news of St. Luke’s grand piano...
Q
Music and Wine at St Luke’s Whilst we love our Steinway grand piano at St Luke’s, it badly needs to go to piano hospital for a few months before it deteriorates further, and the bill will come to £10,000.
“The old piano is a great asset to the church, but it needs a complete overhaul - repairing splits in the soundboard, replacing felts, re-stringing the piano, regulating the keys, action and dampers,” says Concert Series Director, Rachel Fryer. To help raise money, we are launching an online crowdfunding campaign which will run for 60 days from Friday July 15th. Please visit:
www.crowdfunding.justgiving.com/piano-restoration and please share the link with all your friends (eg on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram!). If you would like to make a substantial donation of over £100 please contact us via email on musicandwineatstlukes@gmail.com or by phoning 01273 510595 and you will be invited to a special event in the new year when we will celebrate the return of our piano. We are also holding two fundraising concerts. The first is on July 29th. A short afternoon concert at 3pm features local young talented pianists from the Brighton & Hove area, followed by an evening piano gala concert at the usual time of 7.30pm given by local professional pianists. Expect well-known favourites, lots of fun and a wide variety of music. Admission includes entry to both concerts with optional extra donations.
Before that, our regular series continues. On Friday 1st July the Brighton-based Herschel String Quartet, best-known for its regular appearances at the Science Centre in Herstmonceux, makes its St Luke’s debut with Beethoven’s string quartet Opus 59 No. 1 and Elgar’s string quartet in E minor Opus 83.

The Duruflé Trio
Two weeks later, on 15th July the Duruflé Trio (flute, viola and piano) perform works by English, Polish, French, Russian and American composers - each one a real gem, interspersed with original improvisations. www.durufletrio.com.
To find out more about the series please visit: www.stlukesconcerts.webeden.co.uk for more information or contact musicandwineatstlukes@gmail.com if you would like to join the mailing list. All these concerts are for the bargain price of just £7 / £5 concessions / free to under-16s accompanied by an adult. (Tickets available on the door.) Please visit http://theindependent.pub/st-lukes-music-wine-setmenu/ for information of a special meal offer at The Independent Pub. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, Brighton BN2 9ZB, at 7.30pm. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. Local Police...
Q
Here is news of a review of local policing...
New Role for Local PCSOs Following a review of local neighbourhood policing, local PCSOs will have a revised role from July, when they will be given new powers.
Sussex Police say that PCSOs will actively prevent crimes such as burglary and anti-social behaviour and will be given targeted foot patrols which are proven to reduce crime. They will work when and where they are needed, making use of police and shared premises so they can work close to where the issues are. This increased flexibility means they will be able to work in teams alongside police officers and closely with partners. PCSOs will be equipped with body-worn video cameras and smartphones as these are rolled out across Sussex, giving them access to the latest information and intelligence, saving them time and meaning they can solve problems at the earliest opportunity.
Sussex Police say that the number of officers who respond to emergency calls will remain the same under the new model.
Prevention Teams containing PCSOs and police officers will be accessible to everyone. You can contact them through the website - www.sussex.police.uk. You can also contact Inspector Brian McCarthy of the Central Brighton Neighbourhood Policing Team by email – Brian.mccarthy@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101 ext 550670. All incidents should be reported online or by calling 101 for non-emergencies or 999 for emergencies.

News about the local activities of some of Queen’s Park’s flying friends...
Swifts in Queens Park
By the time this issue of Queen’s Park Living plops onto your doormat our swifts will be at their busiest. They will be feeding hungry month-old swiftlets in nests tucked under the eaves of houses in Queen’s Park Road (three nests), St Luke’s Church (one nest) and St Luke’s Terrace (two nests). This is the ideal time to look up to find if there are swifts nesting near you. You will need to be on your toes as their dash to the nest is as quick as a blink. This time next month our swifts will be on the point of departure: high-flying groups of up to 50 slowly circling birds will drift across the sky, their excited squeals faint and distant. And then, one day in the first week of August, they will be gone and the skies silent.
Swifts were thriving 47 million years before the first humans walked the earth (two million years ago). For most of these millennia it is assumed that they nested in caves. However, for the last 2,000 years they have chosen to throw in their lot with us humans and nest in houses. Unfortunately only 1% of houses built in the last 70 years provide suitable nesting opportunities for swifts. At the same time nest holes in the more suitable Victorian houses typical of the Queen’s Park area are being lost during redecoration. In the 16 years from 1995-2011, swift numbers in the South East fell by 49% (Breeding Bird Survey). Swifts are now on the ‘Amber list’ as a species ‘of conservation concern’. How can you help? 1.
2.
Tell us about swifts nesting in your house or street. We can then draw up maps of swift locations and monitor any year-on-year rise or fall in numbers. We can also offer advice, support or practical help to home owners. By putting up a simple and inexpensive nest box. Check out the RSPB or swiftconservation.org websites or contact me.
Swift entering nest in the eaves of St Luke’s Church tower, 19 July 2015. Note the throat pouch bulging with insects collected during half an hour’s high-speed hunting.
3. 4.
5. 6. 7.
Avoid scheduling building work around a nest site from May to mid-August. Ask your builder to consider ways of preserving an active nest hole (without compromising practical or aesthetic requirements). Swifts have a lifetime loyalty to the same nest hole and will sometimes injure themselves trying to enter the location of a closed hole. Join our local swift group mailing list to keep track of swifts in our area (see below). Get to know swifts and watch a live webcam at http://www.oum.ox.ac.uk/swifts.htm .
