Welcome...

Welcome to the June edition of Queens Park Living!
Another four years passes and once more the World Cup is here. For once the expectation levels amongst the majority could be termed as ‘realistic’, with the gradual realization since the last World Cup that we are no longer a major force in world football. That said, however, and what keeps us all gripped and fascinated by sport is that it can throw up amazing stories and unexpected heroes. Fingers crossed!! For those of you lucky people who aren’t into the football, there are actually far more worthwhile things going on locally. Queen’s Park springs into community life in the summer with both the Bark in the Park Dog Show as well as the annual Shakespeare in the Park. Both are fantastic local events that should not be missed! Have a great June!!

Shakespeare In The Park faced an uncertain future when, after five seasons of unstinting service, local actors Owen Aaronovitch and Fiona Bruce decided to stand down as event organisers. They’ve called it a day due to their own acting commitments - Fiona has a major part in the West End hit musical ‘Once’ - but The Friends Of Queen’s Park agreed to retain the event, with Conrad Brunner from the committee taking on the organisation. “Owen and Fiona have done a brilliant job, and last summer saw a large audience turning out for ‘As You Like It’. It was a beautiful evening, the production was excellent and we want Shakespeare In The Park to continue forever,” says Conrad. “We’re delighted to be working again with Illyria, who really understand outdoor Shakespeare, having been performing nationwide for over a decade. The quality of the acting and direction for ‘As You Like It’ was, I think, remarkably good.” “My aim will be to try and continue the good work of Owen and Fiona. Fortunately, Macbeth is the nearest thing to a guaranteed crowd pleaser. It revels in the dark side of human nature - there are some decent characters, but they mostly get killed off - pre-dating 18/07/2012our 14:18:33 modern infatuation with psychotic drama. Macbeth has a lot in common with TV shows like Game Of Thrones, only Shakespeare’s script - written around 400 years ago - is so much better, don’t you think? “ I can’t think of anything I’d rather watch on a warm summer’s evening, perhaps with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.” Death, treachery, blood and murder are not everyone’s idea of family entertainment, but the Jeavons family of Queen’s Park Road will be out in significant numbers for Macbeth. They will be there to support aspiring young actor Beau Jeavons-White, 23, who will be performing with Illyria in the part of Macduff. Beau is a graduate of the E15 Acting School, and he specialises in sword play - an ideal qualification for Macbeth. “Will we be attending? Try stopping us! We’re so excited and proud of him,” says Lesley Jeavons. You can buy Macbeth tickets direct at Picnic In The Park, on Sunday 29 June, or via the Dome Box Office. All details are on the Friends Of Queen’s Park website. Please note that, while this performance takes place during Brazil 2014, there are no games scheduled for Sunday 6 July.

The campaign’s three key messages are the ‘bread and butter’ principles for developing good oral health. • Brush for two minutes twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks • Visit the dentist regularly, as often as they recommend.
Research suggests there is a link between poor oral health and these nasties: • Dementia • Heart attacks • Strokes • Complications during pregnancy • Male sexual health problems National Smile Month is your chance

Through The Archway The Local Artist Who Created The FQP Logo We are rather fond of our Friends of Queen’s Park logo. It scales up, it scales down. It works black on white, or white on black. It has a simple, sophisticated design with a timeless quality that holds within it the essence of the park that inspired it. FQP was established in the 1980s, but it wasn’t until 1995 that chair Mag Morris recognised the need for a logo, and she had just the man for the job: her husband Peter. Then in his sixties, Peter was enjoying a busy retirement after a long and distinguished career as a graphic designer, a job which had taken him from art school in Cardiff to Montreal, London and eventually Brighton. His CV included a stint in the aircraft industry and running a successful design studio. Many local people know Peter for his oil painting – “a pernicious habit which I still practise” - portraying everyday scenes seen through his own distinctive prism. “I ended up at the University of Sussex as graphic designer, then departmental manager. I am now fully retired, though enslaved by my painting. I’ve done some Open Houses and exhibited here and there [including the Montreal Museum Of Fine Art] and sold a few.” FQP was indeed fortunate to have someone so well qualified for the task of designing its logo. “Having been
educated at a traditional art school - the world of life drawing, anatomy, perspective and the like - my drawing style was what we irreverent students called “chopped hay”, depicting light and shade using a soft pencil. In a pre-computer drawing office, the medium was the 7H pencil, which dispensed a barely visible thin line. This turned me onto line drawing, so-called ‘basic design’.” “The envelope on whose back was scribbled the initial design for the FQP logo has long since gone to the rubbish dump,” says Peter. But he does recall how his creative thoughts were guided by his fondness for the park itself. “Perhaps the components of the design were influenced by my address - 1 West Drive - which nestles in the shadow of the Queen’s Park arch at the top of Egremont Place. The little tree framed by the archway is what I see every time I come up the hill, and, as you know, it is obviously a feature of the park itself.” Sandra Magson, former FQP chair, welcomed the arrival of Peter’s logo: “Queen’s Park is Grade 2 Listed [since 1999] and its current charm owes much to its historic beginnings. The logo, representing in clean, modern design one of the original features of the park, acknowledges the importance of balancing history with the changing needs of current park users.” Now 83, Peter and wife Mag still live on the park, where their contribution remains warmly appreciated.
