Queen’s Park Primitive Methodist Church This rear view photo of Queen’s Park Primitive Methodist Church in Queen’s Park Road was taken on 22 March 1970 from Albion Hill. At that time, its future seemed uncertain; it stood empty and boarded up for some time and in 1988 plans were approved for its conversion to flats. However the building (built in the 1890s) is still standing and it is now used by the Orchard Day Nursery.

Local Charity...

Accommodation in Abbey Road for families with children in hospital…

Ronald McDonald House

Ronald McDonald House Charities UK provides free accommodation and support to families with seriously ill children in hospital. There are currently 11 houses across the UK, just a short walk away from the partnered NHS hospitals which provide specialist care for children. Equipped with communal kitchen/living areas, laundry facilities, Wi-Fi, en-suite bedrooms and hospital line phones, the houses provide families with everything they need. Parents are able to have their other children stay with them at the house and have friends and family visit them whenever they wish, making it a true ‘home away from home’. Here in Brighton, we have an 18-bedroom house. Working alongside the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Trevor Mann Baby Unit, we are able to accommodate around 200 families from all over Sussex, Surrey, Kent and even further afield each year. In 2019, families stayed with us for an average of 26 nights.

It costs from just £1 a day to get your name into every Queens Park home every month

In 2017, Poppy’s family stayed with us for 356 days after she was born with Gastroschisis. Without our house in Brighton, the family would have had to make a 45-minute journey to and from the hospital each day just to see their little girl. Spending a fortune on petrol, they would have the added stress of not being able to be at the hospital as much as they wanted, especially if there was an emergency in the early hours of the morning. Staying with us completely removed those worries. They were able to be as close to Poppy as possible, along with their other daughter and Poppy’s big sister, Grace. The family have been back to visit the house many times since being discharged, to meet up with the House Team and let them know how well they are all getting on now back at home. Poppy is doing remarkably well; she is almost three and will be starting nursery this year. On their last visit, the family expressed some kind words about the house and charity:

‘’Truly, being so close to Poppy in hospital impacted her recovery. This charity provides a beautiful, beautiful service. It’s an integral part of a child’s life in hospital – keeping their family close. The impact having these houses makes is heart-warming.’’ For more information, visit rmhc.org.uk/ourhouses/brighton-house/

Q

Meet a local resident whose first novel has just been published...

Local Author...Alice O’Keeffe How long have you lived in Queen’s Park?

Nearly six years! It doesn’t seem that long. I still occasionally feel like I’m on holiday (in the summer). What do you like about the area?

Alice O’Keeffe lives in Queen’s Park. She is the former deputy editor of the Guardian’s Saturday Review section and her debut novel On The Up, partially set in Brighton, has just been published.

The welcoming, creative and open-minded community, the beach, freezing cold sea swims, cosy cafés, the buzz of Brighton and the rolling hills of the Downs. Really, what’s not to like? Living here is like winning the lottery. Why did you decide to write a book?

When my youngest son was born we were living in a flat in east London. Things weren’t easy – we were broke and sleep-deprived, caring for a baby and a toddler. During nap times, to reclaim a bit of headspace, I started writing little bits and bobs. Gradually, over many years, those bits and bobs came together into a novel. Having a newborn is such an intense time of life. It brings up deeply-buried things from the past. I didn’t really know who I was any more, my old pre-motherhood self was gone forever – that was sometimes exciting, and sometimes really challenging.

Writing helped me to find a new identity as a mum and a grown-up. It also allowed me to laugh at things that might otherwise have made me cry – a mouse infestation, a botched house move. I thought: surely we can’t be the only people going through this stuff? Turns out – we weren’t.

Tell us more about On The Up… On The Up draws loosely on real life, but became a fictional world of its own. Sylvia and Obe live on a council estate with their two young children. They dream of a better life: a house on a leafy street, a garden, somewhere to put the Lego… But when the estate is earmarked for redevelopment they find a new perspective on their eccentric and diverse community.

It’s about the challenges and the rewards, the tears and very importantly the laughter, of modern family life. Do you have any more books planned?

I’m writing my second novel now. It’s very different. I can’t say much more right now but watch this space.

On The Up by Alice O’Keeffe is published by Coronet and is available from Waterstones.com.

Friends of Whitehawk Hill are holding an event on 1st March…

Beating of the Bounds - Save Whitehawk Hill Friends of Whitehawk Hill are holding the second ‘Beating of the Bounds’ on the morning of Sunday 1st March to walk, beat, remember and defend the boundaries of our ancient Race Ground Common. This is a celebration of the land and community, a demonstration of our resistance….and great fun! Common land since Saxon times, the ’Race Ground' recreational common was preserved in 1822 for "the inhabitants of Brighton and the public in general”. Beating the Bounds is an ancient tradition dating back to when there were no maps. Local people would walk the boundaries of their local parish, to commit them to collective memory. Various boundary points or stones were beaten with willow or birch wands. The Race Ground Common has 23 remaining boundary stones. They are made of Sussex marble stone, granite, one Sarsen stone and the rest concrete, but in recent years a couple of them are lost under the encroaching scrub. Whitehawk Hill is still threatened by three building sites on the draft City Plan 2. The integrity of the hill and its 'living archaeology' of diverse, beautiful, strange and threatened wildlife is a fulcrum issue for this council's commitment to their network of high value nature sites.

Beating a boundary stone on Whitehawk Hill 2018

Meet at 9.50 for 10am sharp start, on the grass outside Dobbies Garden Centre, Warren Road, BN2 9XX. The first part of the walk is easy, please do join for this part if you are less mobile. 10.30am we reach the Neolithic Camp. We finish on the field opposite Haybourne Road for refreshments. News from the council…

Brighton General hea

The Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) is lea owns the site and is proposing to create a new community children’s nursery and Trust offices on site. The new state-of the-art facilities will bring health and care services together in a modern, consolidated campus, including: community nurses and therapists; child development centre; local authority children’s centres; falls prevention; health and wellbeing; adult mental health services; therapies and podiatry; GP surgery and pharmacy (new services); and rehabilitation services for people with neurological impairment.

The 4.6 hectare site currently houses the Trust’s administrative offices and a range of communitybased health and social care services, based in more than 20 buildings. It is a steeply sloping site, making it difficult to deliver services and for people with mobility issues to access specialist clinics. Some of the buildings date from the 1860s and around half of the site is underused.

affordable housing on the site while also enabling a fully-funded healthcare scheme. In December 2019 the council entered into a non-disclosure agreement with the Trust, so that they can share sensitive financial information in commercial confidence.

New healthcare investment will need to be paid for by the release of land which will be surplus to NHS requirements. Sussex Community NHS Foundation Trust (SCFT) estimates that 3.5 hectares could be released for the development of new housing and community facilities and that around 700 homes could be built on-site. An outline business case for the health hub plan has been approved by the SCFT Board and the Trust’s commissioners, NHS Brighton & Hove Clinical Commissioning Group. The Trust will be seeking approval from its regulator, NHS Improvement, this year which will give the project team the green light to work up detailed plans and begin planning consultation.

The Trust’s preferred location for the community health hub is the north-west corner of the site, with street level access from Elm Grove. The total area for redevelopment is around 12,500m2. SCFT is talking with South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) about purchasing their adjoining site to enable the health hub to be located at the front of the site to make it more visible and easier to access. The Trust is working towards completing the new health hub by the end of 2024.

Should be a fun and gently active evening with Kate from Magic Moves Dance as we try out some BollyMoves - “Bollywood Dance for all”. Another recipe to try...

Celeriac and feta bake

On Friday 6th March we welcome back The Joss Peach Trio, this time re-imagining classic material from the wonderful Beatles canon. From a funked-out Sergeant Pepper to a reflective Nowhere Man, expect to hear interesting interpretations of some wonderful familiar classics. And on Friday 20th March we will hear the Anöna Trio, featuring Imogen Ryall (vocals), Mark Edwards (piano) and Julian Nicholas (saxophone), to take us on a sonic journey of venturesome arrangements of much-loved standards alongside well-crafted originals. The concerts take place at St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, at 7.30pm. Tickets £7 / £5 under-25s / under-16s free. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served.
