Here we feature the May concerts going on at St Lukes...

Music and Wine at St Luke’s Summer Series Our latest brochure, featuring concerts from May until October, is hot off the press. As well as piano, strings and wind recitals the series features a flute and tabla performance and also a charity gala concert on 19th June in aid of the Neighbourhood Care Scheme. Please contact us if you haven’t got a brochure yet and would like one. On Friday May 22nd, three years after her memorable Goldberg Variations debut, local pianist Rachel Fryer will once again perform this extraordinary work by Bach in its entirety by memory. Made famous by the late Glenn Gould and subsequently in “The Silence of the Lambs”, the variations are full of contrast and last 80 minutes.

Rachel will give a short pre-concert talk about the work, including musical demonstrations which will highlight things to listen for, helping to make the concert as welcoming both for seasoned and for first-time attendees. Venue: St Luke’s Church, Queen’s Park Road, BN2 9ZB Pre-concert talk: 7.30pm. Performance: 8pm.

Tickets: £7 / £5 concessions / £3 under-12s, available on the door. Disabled access. Wine and refreshments served. For more information, visit www.stlukesconcerts.webeden.co.uk

Eternal Vigilance: How they saved The Elm Trees of Queen’s Park By Conrad Brunner You probably know that the arrival of Dutch elm disease in Britain around 30 years ago virtually wiped out the elm population in this country. As many as 25 million trees in the UK were lost, causing an environmental catastrophe, with similar devastation across the continent.

Paris once had 30,000 elms lining its boulevards and avenues. Now there are less than 1,000. All was lost? Not quite. One small corner of Britain held out against the disease, nurturing and maintaining its elm population at more or less the pre-1980s level: the City of Brighton & Hove. Complete disaster was avoided thanks to people like Rob Greenland, who was the Senior Arborist on the council during the darkest days of the disease, when they were chopping down as many as 700 infected trees a year in Brighton. That they were able to preserve the local elm population is thanks to two factors. Firstly, the unique character of our little seaside micro-climate. “The South Downs and the English Channel form natural defences across which the disease cannot easily travel,” explains Greenland. The second factor was the diligence of the council’s elm

You can spot an elm tree by the pronounced vertical ridges of the bark and its teardrop, asymmetrical leaves.

protection programme, scouring the city for infected trees over the summer months: “It’s a fast response strategy of tactical pruning of infected boughs.” A quick look at West Drive shows you where elm trees have been lost, where new ones have been planted, and where mature, healthy elms continue to flourish. The elm is an indigenous tree, suited to the thin top soil and chalky base, thriving in the salty south-westerlies that blow in off the Channel. Not surprisingly, we have become emotionally attached to them. When an elm tree in Vernon Terrace, Seven Dials, was condemned due to its overburdened roots, 4,300 locals signed a petition to save it, and the tree is still there. When building plans at Brighton College required the removal of a 100-year-old English elm, the multimillion pound proposal was swiftly blocked by the council. The Friends Of Queen’s Park logo, inspired by the arch at the foot of West Drive, depicts a small tree visible through the arch. The tree is, of course, an elm. Queen’s Park is ringed by elm trees, on North, East and West Drives, with a couple in the Royal Spa area and a further 20 or so within the park itself. “That Brighton’s parks and Georgian streets still have a flourishing elm population,” said a recent BBC report, “is testament to the efforts of a team of council tree experts who refused to yield to its ravages.”

Concerned about your home being sold to fund your future care fees? The Issue

You probably own your home as joint tenants if you are a couple and solely if you are single. For couples this means you own it wholly, jointly and severally. Ultimately therefore you do not own it 50:50 as you might have assumed. You actually own all of it together and when one partner dies the surviving partner owns it solely and absolutely. It is sole and absolute ownership that enables a property to be taken into consideration as an asset by the local authority and puts the property in danger of needing to be sold to fund care.

The Reality

The Law (C.R.A.G - charging for residential accommodation guide) allows local authorities to assess your assets to determine if you need to pay for your own care. Currently if you have assets above £23,250, you are on your own and require care, you will probably have to pay for it all - currently averaging around £800 per week. Savings, cash and income would be used first and then your property would need to be taken into consideration. You would be expected to pay for all of your care until such time as your assets were depleted to below the £23,250 threshold. You would then pay for a proportion of your care until your assets were below £14,250 - at which point all your future care would be paid for.

The Solution

For couples, simply by changing the way you own your property well in advance of any care considerations i.e from joint tenants to tenants in common and by setting up two Trusts within a properly structured Will at the same time will in most cases, prevent your home from being taken into account by the local authority altogether should you ever require care in the future.

The children and/or whoever else is also nominated as Trust beneficiaries for that particular Trust will subsequently have access to that half of the property when the surviving partner dies. The first half of the property then is 100% securely in Trust for the beneficiaries and will not be at risk. As a result of this simple strategy the survivor is protected from having to sell the property to pay for their care should they need it because it is not possible to sell just their half of the property and the Crag guidelines clearly state that the market value of half a property is £0. The second half of the property will then ultimately go into Trust for access by the nominated beneficiaries when the surviving partner eventually dies. The beneficiaries will at that stage have both halves safe and secure in Trust and will be able to share and dispose of the property according to the wishes of the settlors (the original owners of both halves). By leaving 1/2 the property into Trust on first death, the surviving partner can still sell the property to downsize if they wish and are not restricted in any way with regards to what they wish to do to or with the property - it simply means that it is safeguarded and therefore will definitely be able to be appointed to the chosen beneficiaries when the time comes. For sole owners immediately conveying at least half of your property into Trust well in advance of any care consideration and becoming a Trustee and primary beneficiary of the Trust with others nominated to become beneficiaries after your death is usually enough to take away the risk of the property being considered as an asset to be sold if care is required as the property is not absolutely owned by yourself anymore and again it is not possible to sell half a house or force a Trustee to do something that is not in the ultimate best interest of the Trust beneficiaries. Call us now on 01273 911142 for a friendly chat about how this strategy could be of real benefit to you and your family.

For sole owners the process is simply to set up a Trust now and convey at least 1/2 of your property into it which will produce the same result.

The Reasoning

When you own your home as tenants in common you actually own half each. When the first partner dies, they leave their half into their trust. The surviving partner is the Trustee of that Trust and also the primary beneficiary which means that they have complete control over the property and what happens to it.

Fancy trying yoga? This article should helping choosing from the many different types available...

Finding the right yoga for you Hot yoga, partner yoga, acro-yoga, doga (yoga with your dog!) There are so many different types of yoga these days that it can become quite mind-boggling trying to navigate your way through them. As a new yoga student, you may feel a little like a rabbit caught in the headlights wondering which class you should try and how to decide which one is right for you?

Nic k

When you actually try out these different styles of yoga and you take away the ‘extras’ such as the temperature of the room, or the different types of props being used, you will find that there are strong similarities in the actual postures you do in each class. Most styles of yoga will offer physical opportunities to stretch, tone and strengthen your body, reference to your breath and how it connects with your movements and some element of relaxation or meditation. My own local yoga classes are definitely not hot, though you may increase your heart rate during certain sequences. I might ask you to do some postures in pairs, but this is not the norm and I can

I have been practising yoga for over 25 years and trained with the Vajrasati school of yoga here in Brighton. I am a 500 hour registered yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance UK and teach regular weekly drop-in yoga classes in the Kemptown area which will: • Use an awareness of your breath to connect with your body and its movements • Improve your body confidence, strength and posture • Encourage your body to release physical and emotional tension • Create space for you to relax and find time for yourself • Include a focus on mindfulness and mindful movement • Have a fun and friendly atmosphere where beginners are welcome Yoga has been shown to have many benefits for mind and body from helping with back pain to calming anxiety. Ultimately it is a refreshing and rejuvenating way to spend an hour of your time. If you don’t like the idea of a group drop-in class, I also offer 1-2-1 or small group tuition in your own home or workplace. Festival...

Q

Here are a couple of things going on locally in the Brighton festival...

Anvil Ironworks at Artists Open Houses Anvil Ironworks will have an exhibition of sculpture and affordable metal art at the Artists Open Houses festival, plus live forging demonstrations from 1pm, in the first four weekends in May. This year, Anvil will also be showcasing photos from Heath Knight. Paul Wells is the artist maker behind Anvil Ironworks. He specialises in handcrafted contemporary and traditional metalwork. He creates decorative and functional sculpture, lighting and furniture, sitespecific and architectural pieces. During the festival, Anvil are at 222 Ditchling Road, or find them with the Fiveways Artists Group in the Open House brochure.

Brighton Festival event: Ear Trumpet

Queen’s Park 16-17 May

A rich seam of music is flowing through a geological fault line deep beneath Brighton. Eonsworth of sound is harmonically bound together, trapped inside primeval rocks, and occasionally it erupts to the surface.

To hear it properly, however, you’ll need to use a series of elaborate ear trumpets created from gramophone horns, converted euphoniums and brass instruments. “Ear Trumpet” is about the noises that you would miss if you didn’t listen for them and features original music by Robert Lee. This will take place on the old bowling green - drop in at any time between 12 - 2pm or 3 - 5pm.

Queen’s Park News...

13

With important news of changes to how the park will be maintained...

Queen’s Park - Volunteers Needed... 40 years ago the Queen’s Park Community Association got fed up with the way things were going and mustered volunteers to sort out the park, save the Royal Spa and persuade the council to build the Spa Nursery School. Well, the going is getting tough again, and some say it’s time for the tough to get going!

2015 will see more cuts to our team of hardworking gardeners and litter picking at the weekend has also been withdrawn. There are already areas of the park which have not been maintained for years. Take the Cascade: in 1975 we were advised that ‘unless the community is willing to do the donkey work the stream will go.’ Well, the Cascade stream is still there but maintenance is still down to us and we need your help! This year City Parks announced it is to encourage volunteer groups to become autonomous. This means no more relying on a Park Ranger to organize volunteer sessions. It will be down to the Friends of Queen’s Park or community members. There may be a bright side to all this. Becoming autonomous would mean we ourselves can select

what work needs to be done and then do it when and where we choose. Well, OK, it will have to fit the new Master Plan (to be published soon) but within reason that will be the case. There are loads of smiles around when people work in volunteer groups and for some the rewards go way beyond the achievement of the day. Skills are learned, friendships are begun and people feel better about themselves. Our timetable for 30 volunteers sessions is on the park notice-boards and also on our website. For more information contact Chris: chrisalowe@btinternet.com or Lindsay: lindsay.cattanach@brighton-hove.gov.uk Volunteer sessions in May are Wednesdays 6th and 20th @ 1pm and Saturday 23rd @ 11am
