Welcome...

Q

Welcome to the November edition of Queens Park Living!

The wind and rain have been lashing across the park this last week and the leaves have been descending from the trees, the clocks have gone forward and it is all rather bleak! However, no time for despondency; your latest copy of Queen’s Park Living has landed on your door mat, so kettle on, feet up and have a browse. We hope you find something of interest in this month’s edition. Please don’t be shy about sending us in local articles - we would love to get some more articles each month to publish. The only real criteria is that they have to have some connection to Queen’s Park, or very close. We also welcome feedback on what type of content you would most like to see each month and might find most useful. Drop us an email with any ideas you might have. Have a great November and take care on Bonfire Night!! The Queen’s Park Living Team info@queensparkliving.co.uk www.queensparkliving.co.uk Cover photo: Simon Dack

Have you had your ‘flu’ jab for this winter? Influenza, or ‘flu’, is a common, highly infectious viral illness that is spread by coughs and sneezes, and is especially widespread in the winter months. It can leave you feeling extremely tired and achy, with symptoms of a high temperature, headache, sore throat, and often nausea and a cough.

The symptoms last around a week on average, and are more severe and longer-lasting than those caused by the common cold. You can also infect other people during the first 5-6 days. In the UK, around 600 people a year die from a complication of seasonal ‘flu, and this can rise to 13,000 during an epidemic. So have the ‘flu’ jab for‘flu’-free winter!

Are you between 30- 75 years of age and suffer from Erectile Dysfunction? We can now supply you with prescription tablets (all major brands available) without you having to go to your doctors (subject to certain criteria). You can come and see the pharmacist at O’Flinns in strict confidence.

At ONLY £10, protect yourself and those around you. You can call in the Pharmacy. No appointment necessary.

The latest edition to the local food scene is STOCK, the new shop in Islingword Road...

Take STOCK in Islingword Road

There seems to be no let-up with the current food revolution. We are becoming more interested in the provenance of the food we eat and the quality of the ingredients that stock our shelves. Numerous food festivals, street dining on a weekly basis, superb restaurants and even quality goods at Brighton Station are putting Brighton firmly on the gastro map. In our local area, takeaways are upping their game significantly, and there are many places to grab a lunchtime snack or coffee that vendors in the Lanes

would be proud of. The latest addition to the local food scene is STOCK, located at the top of Islingword Road, just into Islingword Place, next to the popular new takeaway, Smoque. STOCK is described as a “quality grocer’s” by Rachel and James, who opened the shop at the end of June. They are familiar faces around Hanover, having both worked in pubs in the area over the last 15 years, and lived in the area for most of that time too. The idea to open STOCK came to them after experiencing problems trying to find a range of quality ingredients locally to make a good meal. STOCK is still in its early days and is working to expand its range over the coming weeks with more fresh fruit and vegetables, and a bigger selection of products from the Real Patisserie bakery. There has been significant demand for gluten-free products, prompting plans to introduce a range of baked goods. The yard adjacent to STOCK has now been cleared and is being set up to house market stalls for local producers and will sell seasonal goods. STOCK plans to sell smokeless fuel and logs for the colder months; Christmas trees and decorations will be available throughout December, with a winter fayre feel being created in the yard. Free-range turkeys from Holmansbridge Farm will be available to order for Christmas, as well as goods from the Lewes Smoke House and Downsview Dairy. STOCK has tried to keep convenient opening hours, being open until 7.30pm Monday to Friday, 6.30pm on Saturday and 4.30pm on Sunday. For more information, search on Facebook for STOCK, call 01273 945050, or email stockbrighton@gmail.com .

Here we feature a local group that was born locally and has the purpose of helping tenants...

Home Sweet Home In the spring of 2013 a group of politically active locals invited the non-profit group Movement for Change to a meeting in Brighton. Movement for Change specialises in helping groups to set up and run grass-roots campaigns - a process called Community Organising. Together they identified a series of issues affecting people who rent houses in the city - and key to the problem seemed to be unhelpful managing agents. After considerable discussion and some training in campaigning methods a plan of action was created called Home Sweet Home, it began in July 2013. A key issue was tenants’ lack of knowledge of their own rights, so a working group, including the University of Brighton’s Student Union and the Residential Landlords’ Association, worked together to produce a new guide which was published online, and has since been included on the city council’s website. As part of the campaign all 21,000 students at Brighton University will be made aware of this new guide. The group carried out ‘secret shopper’ meetings with local letting agents, to visit houses being offered to students, check their quality and the level of service provided by the agents. This undercover operation tended to support the anecdotal information they collected in discussion with students, where poorly maintained, sometimes dangerous equipment was frequently mentioned, as were tatty furnishings, poor security to doors and windows, and inadequate heating. These poor facilities could be overcome if letting agents acted on behalf of tenants to bring about the necessary improvements, but in the main they do not act in this way. This year they will expand their activities beyond the student tenant group of the first year, whilst seeking ways to raise the issues and bring about improve-

ments in the service across the city. Local groups representing residential areas in the city might see benefits to getting involved with Home Sweet Home, as many issues about streetscape are linked to absentee landlords who weaken our communities by turning homes into profit-centres, and take money out of our communities, often at the expense of the quality of our neighbourhoods. Chris Taylor, chair of the Hanover and Elm Grove Local Action Team said, “The private rental area is one that constantly needs a close eye kept on it and the work done by Home Sweet Home and The Movement for Change over recent years has been invaluable.” Home Sweet Home can be reached via the Movement for Change website, www.movementforchange.org.uk/home_sweet_ home/.

Local Group... Have you met this lady yet? If not you will do in the next 12 months or so...

Brighton Community Organisers Hello, my name is Maddy and I am one of two new Community Organisers, working in and around the Grand Parade area of Brighton, as part of the National Community Organiser Programme employed by Locality and hosted by Brighton University Student Union. Since July, I have had the pleasure of working with people who live and work in Queens Park and Tarner and my colleague Valentina is working in Hanover. Our role involves knocking on doors in the local community and asking residents what it is that they love about their communities and if there is anything they would like to change and improve about where they live. Community organising is the work of building relationships in communities to activate people and create social and political change through collective action. So how does this differ to other community work that is already going on? The big difference is that I am independent, a-political and have no agendas; any

projects that I get involved with will be completely led by the people I listen to. I am new to Brighton, but my partner grew up here so we have come back after 20 years with our little boy to live beside the sea side, beside the sea! Originally from Southampton, I have been living in London off and on for the last 15 years, and it is nice to back on the coast. I cannot quite believe that I am a Community Organiser – it is just the perfect job for me. My working life has always been about motivating people to action. My motto in life is “Rome wasn’t built in a day, but some of it was”. Small actions by many people lead to great things! l just love getting out and about meeting the residents and listening to what they love about our community, what concerns they have and what vision they have to change our town into a better place for us all to live together. If you feel the same about your role in your community or you have a great idea to share - please get in touch either by phone, e-mail or via our Community Organisers Facebook page. Here we feature a local venue that might be perfect for that occasion you are organising...

Tennis Club Serves Up a Party Ace

Badgers Tennis Club in the heart of Kemp Town is serving up a new venture which is bound to be a big hit with anyone planning a special party.

Set in beautiful gardens in Church Place, the club is the perfect setting for a wide range of events and parties including Christmas, New Year celebrations, birthdays and wedding receptions. The purpose-built clubhouse has a fully licensed bar and can cater for up to 70 people. There are kitchen facilities, a background/PA music system, party lighting and plenty of room for a band or DJ. When the weather is fine, guests can also make use of the pretty gardens and terraces. Club member Carol Wickens explained: “The clubhouse really is a fantastic place to hold a party and can look really spectacular. “It’s a very versatile space and of course the setting is really idyllic. We can help and advise on all aspects from catering to arranging special bar requests and we also have contacts with local bands and DJs.”

Children’s birthday celebrations have proved extremely popular and there is the option of using the tennis courts for a party with a difference. “The best advice is to come along and have a look at the facilities, the gardens and the lovely setting,” added Carol. Of course the club – often described as Kemp Town’s secret garden - is also keen to hear from new playing members with all standards welcome. There are club afternoons on Saturdays and Sundays and also Thursday evenings. A wide range of courses and group drop-ins are also available along with training sessions, junior performance squads, fun tournaments and school holiday camps. Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

Ask your GP about the free flu jab.
