“We’ve had our flu jab.”

Frveeryeone

for e 5 aged 6 r e and ov

Flu occurs every year. It’s a highly infectious disease that can lead to serious illness. Older people and those with long term health conditions are among the most at risk from flu. The best way to avoid catching and spreading flu is by having a vaccination before the flu season starts.

Ask your GP about the free flu jab.

Welcome...

Welcome to the October edition of Queens Park Living!

Horrible to have to admit, but I think it is now indisputable that summer has indeed passed and that we are now in autumn. Autumn isn’t so bad however...the colours are amazing and you can’t beat those fresh autumnal mornings in Queen’s Park. So what have we for you this month? We have the usual old photo of the area - admittedly not exactly Queen’s Park, but at least only a stone’s throw away. We also have the last in the series of historical articles about people who have lived in buildings around the park. This has been a fascinating little run of articles written by Lavender Jones, whom we thank very much for taking the time to write and send them in to us. A few months ago we featured a local artist… This month we again feature Kaye Teale as she has painted the front of her house with a mural of the Pavilion! Check out page 11.

Have you had your ‘flu’ jab for this winter? Influenza, or ‘flu’, is a common, highly infectious viral illness that is spread by coughs and sneezes, and is especially widespread in the winter months. It can leave you feeling extremely tired and achy, with symptoms of a high temperature, headache, sore throat, and often nausea and a cough. The symptoms last around a week on average, and are more severe and longer-lasting than those caused by the common cold. You can also infect other people during the first 5-6 days. In the UK, around 600 people a year die from a complication of seasonal ‘flu, and this can rise to 13,000 during an epidemic. So have the ‘flu’ jab for‘flu’-free winter!

Local History...

7

The last in a great series of local historical articles written by Queen’s Park resident Lavender Jones......

19 West Drive, Queen’s Park

It can be confusing to connect a family to the right house, as house numbers change, and in the case of West Drive there were originally only names. West Drive started to have numbers in the early 20th century. Before that, the few houses that were there had names, some of which remain over the door. Number 19 West Drive was called “Brooklyn” and was the residence of Mrs Annie M Ginnett, wife of John Frederick Ginnett, the circus proprietor. After her husband’s death in 1892, she moved there from 27 Wellington Road, Brighton, and by 1911 she was living with one of her seven children, Victoria, aged 23, and one servant. The house had eight rooms. Ginnetts have a long history in the circus, variety and theatre performance, dating back to the early 1800s, making them one of the oldest circus and variety

families in Europe. John Frederick Ginnett was born in 1819. He was the son of Jean Pierre Ginnett, who started in show business with his pony and budgerigar show in Ludgate Circus, London. John Ginnett came to Brighton in the late 1870s, together with his wife Annie and four sons. Their son, Louis J Ginnett, became a well-known artist and designer; his paintings are held at Ditchling and Brighton museums. John Ginnett built his first permanent circus in Park Crescent Place; it became the Gaiety Theatre in 1890 but was demolished in the 1930s. He later built the Hippodrome Circus which opened in North Road in 1891; this later became The Grand Theatre.

Local Group...

Brighton and Hove

National Trust Association Our local association was inaugurated in 1972 to promote and prosper the National Trust (NT), and to arrange social events for the enjoyment of our members. Our objectives remain the same and our friendly group, until now restricted to NT members, is now open to anyone wishing to support our ideas. We meet twice a month on a Thursday afternoon at the Ajex Centre, Hove, and on a Monday evening at Brighton Hove and Sussex Sixth Form College (BHASVIC). We have a variety of speakers during the autumn, winter and spring giving talks, usually illustrated, on a wide range of subjects, including Charles Dickens, the Olympic Games, Brighton In Pictures Over The Last 100 Years and Bee Keeping, to mention just a few. We also have a NT sales table at these meetings, not forgetting a cup of tea and biscuits. We have several coach outings during the summer

months, visiting NT properties and many other places of interest. In the autumn we have a lunch, a Christmas tea, and a New Year lunch. Each year a five day holiday is organised, visiting places of great national beauty and NT properties. All these activities raise money and we are proud that over the years we have donated over ÂŁ100,000 to the NT, priority being given to local properties, namely Nymans Gardens and Saddlescombe Farm. The annual subscription is ÂŁ10 and details of the dates and times of all our meetings and how to join are available from our Membership Secretary, Miss E Raynar-Smith, tel: 01273 562404. Please contact her for more information and an application form. Come along to one of our meetings for a taster; you will be most welcome. Paul Smith, Chairman.

Please send in your local Queen’s Park articles to info@queensparkliving.co.uk...

A house with a difference by Kaye Teale A few months ago Queen’s Park Living featured me and my art work. Well, things went from small 8 x 5” miniatures of local landmarks to creating a landmark of my own! It was the best part of a decade since the front of my house had seen fresh paint and, with the overgrown ivy now stripped away, the poor walls looked patchy and exposed. I looked around for prices for scaffold towers and got an amazing deal with Apollowe Scaffolding Ltd. Mark Lowe, the owner, is a real gent and was true to his word with the price and the timescale. That all arranged, I then had the idea of painting a mural. I’d never done it before, but hey, it’s just a slightly bigger painting, right? The Brighton Pavilion is a favourite landmark of mine, so that got me thinking and sketching out a design. The hard part, apart from looking down from the top elevation, was getting the shape to fit the house. So I designed the mural to be half of the Pavilion, and I’m hoping my next-door neighbour will commission the other half! The rest is for all to see. I must say I’ve had some lovely comments whilst up the ladder. I hadn’t realised how something quite simple could cheer people up. Hopefully when I have my Open House exhibition next May 2015, visitors will be able to spot me a mile off! Meanwhile, if any of you are thinking your place needs a fresh coat of paint, why not give me a call to see if we can come up with something rather special. Kayeteale61@hotmail.com

Fundraising...

Here we report on a great fundraising effort by a local tennis club...

Game, Set and Cash

And they served up their biggest cheque yet with over £1,000 being presented to the children’s charity. The annual NSPCC tournament has been running at Badgers for many years with players from clubs around East Sussex, including Queen’s Park, joining the event to raise money and awareness of the charity. Tracey Bravo, the NSPCC’s Community Fundraising Manager for Sussex, said the cash raised would pay for over 250 ChildLine calls. “Last year there were 681 calls to ChildLine from Brighton and Hove landline numbers. Landline calls only represent around 22% of voice calls, with the rest from mobiles. “ChildLine is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to help children and young people who need someone to talk to.” Tracey also highlighted a new initiative - the Zipit app - which has been designed to help youngsters fend off inappropriate chat. “I really would like to give a massive thank you to all at Badgers Tennis Club for raising so much money and putting on such a fun and well organised event,” Tracey added.

Tennis players smashed a fundraising target when they took to the courts to raise money for the NSPCC. More than 30 players from around East Sussex gathered at Badgers Tennis Club in Kemp Town for the annual charity tournament.

Tracey Bravo, from the NSPCC, received the bumper cheque from Badgers chairman Liz Foster. For any further information please contact Julia Waring on 07789 317143
