Welcome to the September edition of Queens Park Living! Welcome to Queen’s Park Living and we hope you have enjoyed a great summer in our wonderful local park.
It has certainly been a mixed summer weatherwise. I have stood outside my house and measured 102 degrees during that heatwave early in July and I have also headed out for the day in a jacket and with a woolly hat in my pocket just in case as it was so chilly! It has certainly been predictably unpredictable in a truly British way! We have some good local content for you this month. Another local councillor is featured. We also have an article from the Local Action Team on page 9 that you may well like the sound of. On Page 13 we have an article about the great efforts of The Friends of Queens Park. Have a great September!

The Spa was built in 1825 by Friedrich Struve, and was patronised by members of the court when in Brighton. With the passage of years the Spa changed to a large bottling business, Hooper Struve, and it was then that the factory and outbuildings were added. In 1965 Hooper Struve gave up the premises and the Pump Room became derelict. It was subsequently demolished, leaving only the façade. Eventually, in the 1970s, the Royal Spa Nursery School was built there. Thanks to the Regency Society for this image from their photographic archives, The James Gray Collection. Have you had your ‘flu’ jab for this winter? Influenza, or ‘flu’, is a common, highly infectious viral illness that is spread by coughs and sneezes, and is especially widespread in the winter months. It can leave you feeling extremely tired and achy, with symptoms of a high temperature, headache, sore throat, and often nausea and a cough. The symptoms last around a week on average, and are more severe and longer-lasting than those caused by the common cold. You can also infect other people during the first 5-6 days. In the UK, around 600 people a year die from a complication of seasonal ‘flu, and this can rise to 13,000 during an epidemic. So have the ‘flu’ jab for‘flu’-free winter! The last in a series of interviews with the new councillors for Queen’s Park…
Meet Your Local Councillor: Adrian Morris Adrian was elected in May as Labour Councillor for Queen’s Park and is lead spokesperson for Tourism and the Arts. What is your connection to the Queen’s Park area?
I have lived in the city for 50 years. I went to Brighton Art School and in my student days worked in St James’s Street. At that time there was a huge choice of jobs for students in Brighton & Hove. Sadly things are nowhere near as good now for young people starting out in life. What is your background?
My parents were poor working class, but hugely aspirational for their children. They never relied on credit. Money was put in jam jars every week for bills and food. I admire their values - an example of what you need, rather than what you want, and never living beyond your means. Why did you want to become a councillor?
I have been fortunate in life, having had a good education with inspiring teachers and lecturers, followed by continuous employment. Now I feel I have reached a stage in life where I can give something back. But one thing I dislike about politics are the insidious attacks, which appear in the press and media. For me residents come first and their wellbeing is most important. I worked in the voluntary sector for over ten years with people who were terminally ill. That experience changed my life and it became my benchmark for the future. What do you hope to achieve in the area?
The demographic of Queen’s Park is extremely varied and that presents many different challenges, which I find exciting. Listening to people is paramount, but equally important is to be honest and not to promise something that cannot be delivered. There are areas that need regeneration, such as St James’s Street and the

seafront, and I have ideas how that can be done, looking for funding beyond traditional council revenue. What are your interests outside politics?
I love living here and feel that the city is like a comfy sofa. Although I enjoy travelling I can’t wait to get home. The city has many great bars and restaurants where I can relax with friends. One place I never tire of visiting is the Royal Pavilion. It sums up the uniqueness and quirkiness of the city. How can people contact you?

Here is a report on the latest meeting of the Local Action Team...
Update on the Queen’s Park Local Action Team The Queen’s Park Local Action Team met in July at The Hanover pub. Party Houses Former Cllr Geoffrey Bowden attended the meeting to present information on the party house scrutiny process which he initiated. He was concerned that the six month review of the actions agreed at scrutiny would not now take place as no further complaints had been received about party houses, leaving officers to conclude that the issue had been resolved. Residents felt that this was not the case, but that there were unresolved problems around reporting, leading residents to ‘give up’ complaining. Councillors present undertook to look into the issues raised and report back.
Cuthbert Pub Group The Cuthbert Community Buyout Group started life 18 months back, with a few residents getting together to share concerns around the lack of community facilities in their area. Seeing that The Cuthbert pub was empty, they had the idea to turn it into a community hub with a drop-in centre and community café. Their proposals have been welcomed locally; however a planning application has been registered to turn the pub into private residential accommodation. The group are asking residents to object to the current plans and support them in developing a vision for the site. More information can be found on their website: cuthbertcommunitybuyout.wordpress. com . It was agreed that a letter of support/opposition to the current planning application could be sent on behalf of the LAT.

Park News...
Q
News from Conrad Brunner of the Friends of Queen’s Park…
Friends of Queen’s Park... It’s a fishy business How did this get in here? While our volunteers were kindly performing their pond clearance duties recently, a flash of gold popped out of the duck weed. A fish.
It was a small, golden creature that looked – to our semi-educated eyes – like a carp. We then saw another, then another, and another, all pretty small but surprisingly numerous. Oddly, when clearing the pond just a fortnight previously, there were no fish sightings. None at all. The only realistic conclusion is that a citizen has unilaterally taken a course of fish diversification in the public parks of BN2. Or, to put it another way, someone emptied their fish tank into our pond. The thing is, these fish are not really welcome in the Queen’s Park pond. “We don’t want them in there,” explains Park Ranger Lindsay Cattanach, “because they breed prolifically, disturb the base of the pond, deoxygenate the
water and eat the pond wildlife including tadpoles, newtpoles, water beetle larvae and various other important micro-organisms. Carp are the worst of all native fish to have in Queen’s Park pond as they feed by grubbing in the fragile silt at the bottom of the pond, causing deoxygenating clouds of mud as well as preventing oxygenating plants from taking root.” The carp (Cyprinus carpio) is included in the list of the World’s 100 Worst Invasive Species, along with the grey squirrel, the Asian tiger mosquito and Japanese knotweed. And carp breed like crazy, with a female typically laying 300,000 eggs at a time. FQP’s Chris Lowe adds: “We caught 40 carp between 2cm and 4cm long but there are likely to be many hundreds more. The pond was emptied in 2005 because the water quality had deteriorated so badly that poisonous blue-green algae was forming. A number of lice-infested carp were removed. It took over a year for the pond to fill naturally with rainwater, but now, 10 years later, there is a healthy crop of Hornwort (one of the best oxygenating plants) and huge diversity of water creatures including newts and at least four species of dragonfly.” So, in the future, please do not think of liberating your little fishes in the waters of Queen’s Park. Check www.FQPBrighton.net for latest volunteer events in Queens Park. JACK & THE BEANSTALK A Traditional Family Pantomime
