A NEW TYPE OF DINER

We offer incredible new versions of food and drink that you might find familiar. We have sodas made in house with some help from our centrifuge machine. They have around one tenth of the sugar of regular sodas. Our cocktails are crafted with loving care using house made essences, bitters and artisanal spirits. Some of our cakes have no added sugar. Some are completely dairy free. We are really proud of our velvety, house made, organic cashew and tiger nut milk blend.

Our coffee has to be tasted to be believed. We only use the best butter, virgin coconut oil (for our many non dairy/vegan creations) and extra virgin olive oil for dressing. Our tea is brewed in clean glass, to the perfect temperature.

Everything we have is completely free of gluten. That's right, everything. Even our house made sourdough, sweet bakes and our buttermilk pancakes. Our aim is excellence as standard. We make super food for super people.

We feature another new councillor in Queen’s Park this month – Clare Rainey, who tells us what she’d like to achieve. We also have news of an oral history project that you might be able to help with, particularly if you have worked at any of the Brighton hospitals, and the UK’s youngest feature film director tells us about his latest project on a Channel swimmer born in Freshfield Road.

Q

An interview with one of the new councillors for Queen’s Park...

Meet Councillor...Clare Rainey Clare Rainey was elected in May as a Green Party councillor for Queen’s Park. Do you live in this part of Brighton?

Yes I do. I have lived in the Queen’s Park area of Brighton since 2002. Growing up in London, I often visited Brighton and have great affection for this city and everything it has to offer. Tell us about your background...

I have worked as a graphic designer since my early 20s and have always been passionate about the natural environment. My first graphic design job was with WWF-UK and since then I have worked for a range of environmental groups and charities. Before moving to Brighton I lived and worked in Australia, New Zealand and Scotland. When I relocated to Brighton I set up my own business and have continued to work as a graphic designer. I have also been involved with a number of community projects including setting up a local after school club and raising money for solar panels for St Luke’s Primary School. I have worked as a volunteer at The Royal Sussex hospital and at the Brunswick Ward in Hove. What made you want to become a councillor?

I have always been interested in politics and am a natural Green Party supporter. When my son was offered none of his secondary school choices, I and other parents formed a campaign group to raise awareness of the impact on children of being sent to schools out of their catchment area and away from their local Complete community. During this professional time, we had a lot of decorating support from some of service our local councillors and Interiors &Exteriors I realised the difference Sensible Quotes a good local councillor Call Mr Gilmour can make to people going through difficult 01273 679350 / experiences. I put myself 07748023392 qpd1@live.com forward as a Green www.queensparkdecorator.co.uk Party candidate in the

Queens Park Decorating

2019 local elections and was delighted to win the most votes in the ward. What do you hope to achieve in the Queen’s Park area?

Queen’s Park is a very diverse ward with distinct areas such as the seafront, St James Street and Kemptown, the area around Queen’s Park, and the southern part of Hanover. I hope to help to improve recycling services and green spaces, particularly Queen’s Park itself, and to improve opportunities for walking and cycling. I would love to see Madeira Terrace reopened and have already made some progress on ensuring restoration work will start sooner rather than later. I would like to reduce crime levels particularly in the St James Street area, and increase support for residents affected by crime and anti-social behaviour. The whole ward has a lot to offer in terms of creativity, diversity, strong community groups and projects, the Eastern seafront, and excellent primary schools, and I would like to see increased investment and opportunities in this part of Brighton. What are your interests outside politics?

I enjoy walking our dog on the Downs and on the beach, running, cycling, camping and spending time with my family and friends. I also love reading and am part of a local book club, as well as anything art and design related. How can we contact you?

You can email me at: clare.rainey@brighton-hove.gov.uk My surgeries are:

First Thursday of every month starting September 5th 7.30 to 8.30pm (drop-in) St Joseph’s Church Hall, Kemptown

Third Saturday of every month starting October 19th 3.30 to 4.30pm (drop-in) BYC, Edward Street

A great annual opportunity to visit new places...

Heritage Open Days 2019...

It’s the 25th year of the Heritage Open Days festival, England’s largest festival of history and culture.

It’s an opportunity to visit some places not ordinarily accessible, and best of all everything is free, although some events must be booked. This year the festival will run for 10 consecutive days, from 13th to 22nd September, and the theme is “People Power” in recognition of the 200th anniversary of the Peterloo Massacre. Brighton College tour: Brighton College will once again be open for tours (Friday 13 and Friday 20 September). There will be an introduction to the history of the school and its buildings – the early parts were designed by Sir Gilbert Scott from 1848 to 1862. Pre-booking is required by 12 September.

The William Pye exhibition at The Secret Garden in Kemp Town

The Secret Garden: The Secret Garden in Kemp Town, on the corner of Bristol Gardens and Bristol Place, will be open on the weekends of 14-15 September and 21-22 September, from 11am-5pm (no booking required). A stunning selection of major works by internationally acclaimed sculptor William Pye is on exhibition here. Kemp Town Enclosures: If you’d like to see the secret tunnel to the Kemp Town Enclosures, join a tour led by Michael Bedingfield and learn about the history of these private gardens. (Sunday 15 September, 2pm, prebooking required by 12 September) Booking for events in the Brighton and Hove area is co-ordinated by the Regency Town House, with all events listed on their website: www.rth.org.uk/BHOD19, or visit www.heritageopendays.org.uk for further information on these and many other events.

It’s the 150th anniversary of the Kemp Town branch line...

A correction to an article in last month’s magazine...

Choo Choo 150...

Brighton College new building – correction

Saturday 21st September, 5pm-10pm

William Clarke Park (‘The Patch’), Picton Street On 21st September Choo Choo 150, a free community event celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Kemp Town Branch Line which opened in August 1869, will take place in The Patch.

In last month’s Queen’s Park Living, we published an article on the new Sports and Sciences building at Brighton College.

The railway carried goods and passenger trains from Brighton station along a short 2km route, over the Lewes Road viaduct, along a deep cutting and through a 1km tunnel from Elm Grove, and under Carlisle Street, before emerging at Kemp Town Station, now the site of the Freshfield Industrial Estate.

In 1933 passenger trains were suspended due to competition from the more regular tram service. The last train - a special - ran in 1971. The viaduct was demolished in 1983 and the cutting, linking to the tunnel under Elm Grove, became a landfill site which was grassed over and became known as ‘The Patch’. In 1994 the Patch was officially named ‘William Clarke Park’, after Labour councillor ‘Nobby’ Clarke, who had campaigned to turn the railway land into this recreational space.

The Friends of William Clarke Park group recently commissioned graffiti artist Ben Wilson to create a huge mural depicting a train on the line, to celebrate the anniversary. The 150 Choo Choo event will include local bands, an exhibition, slide-show and recorded spoken railway memories, and a train-themed procession along the route of the line. We would like to apologise for the impression given that there was a completely new planning application for this building. In fact the current planning application proposes some amendments to the conditions of a previous planning permission, including changes to the vehicle entrance, replacing a flint boundary wall and relocating the cycle parking. The new Sports and Science Centre is now in the final stages of completion. It will provide state-of-the-art training opportunities for pupils, including a double-height sports hall with basketball court, a running track and a 25-metre pool. Thanks to everyone who wrote in to point out our mistake.

Hospital memories wanted to make medical history

Council weed removal programme

Sussex residents are invited to share their memories - both as staff and patients - for the final phase of a heritage project co-ordinated by Strike a Light - Arts & Heritage and Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals (BSUH).

Researchers are appealing for current and former employees of hospitals run by BSUH to help create an oral archive. Participants will be asked about their memories of the five BSUH hospitals, including the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Sussex Eye Hospital and Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital. Oral history project manager Nicola Benge says: “We are interested to hear about training, the social life of hospitals, of hierarchies and comradeship. We want to know about changes in the way that patients are treated, medical and technical innovations, in care and also, possibly, in difficulties or struggles. We very much want to collect the hitherto unrecorded or neglected story, for hospitals are more than bricks and mortar.”

The stories will form a new oral archive at the hospital after March 2020. There will also be an exhibition at Jubilee Library from 5th-21st September, with a vox pops memories collection session from 10am3pm on Saturday 7th September.

Anyone interested in participating should contact: Nicola Benge (Project Manager), Strike a Light - Arts & Heritage, Studio 8, Open Market, Marshalls Row, Brighton BN1 4JU, or email: strikealight@rocketmail.com For further information go to strikealight.org

The council has begun an extensive weed removal programme after pledging to become a pesticide-free city.

A team of eight will join existing staff who are already touring the city to remove weeds by hand and with tools as the council reduces the use of the world’s most widely sold weed killer, glyphosate, which many experts believe causes cancer. No glyphosate will be used in parks while the impact is monitored and alternative solutions are trialled.

Residents who would like excessive weeds removed from public land can contact Cityclean on 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove. gov.uk.

News of a Brighton-based film about a swimmer born in the Queen’s Park area...

Vindication Swim...

The UK’s youngest feature film director, Elliott Hasler, is 19 years old and comes from Hove. His first feature film, Charlie’s Letters, premiered at the Brighton Fringe Festival in 2017. His latest film in production is Vindication Swim, about Mercedes Gleitze, the first English woman to swim the Channel, who was born in Freshfield Road. Elliott told us more... Why did you decide to make a film on Mercedes Gleitze?

I decided to make ‘Vindication Swim’, a film based on the life of Mercedes Gleitze, because it’s just an incredible story about an equally incredible and inspiring woman. There’s a whole lot more to it than just swimming the English Channel, but to go into that would be to spoil the film! What stage is the film at currently?

We’ve just started shooting the water sequences for the film, which we hope to wrap by the end of the summer. From there we move back onto dry land to film the rest of the scenes.

BACK to SCHOOL...

Tarner Community Project offers a vibrant range of after school clubs and holiday play schemes for children aged 4-11 years. With OFSTED outstanding accreditation, the children benefit from a wide range of activities and the wonderful outside space of Tarner Park, where the project is based.Children are collected from school and then have an afternoon of activities including games, arts & crafts, sports, cooking, then end the day with a hot vegetarian 2 course meal. Spaces for this increasingly popular club are limited, so sign up soon to avoid disappointment.

‘OFSTED OUTSTANDING’ 2014

We are absolutely using Brighton actors and locations! Our lead Kirsten Callaghan is from Brighton, as are the majority of the other cast members including John Locke of ‘Darkest Hour’ and ‘The Favourite’, who plays Mercedes’ coach in the film. The idea is for this film to be the next ‘Quadrophenia’, an iconic Brighton-based film that the whole city was able to come behind and fully embrace; we’re looking to emulate that with ‘Vindication Swim’. Have you got any more films planned?

I think I’ll concentrate on the task at hand first, which will take some time due to the huge challenge of filming out at sea. Although having said that there are certainly ideas running through my mind. Is it difficult combining your film-making with your university studies?

Not particularly, I did it before with ‘Charlie’s Letters’, so I’m not concerned about doing it again with ‘Vindication Swim’. For more information on Elliott’s work, visit www.relsahproductions.co.uk.
