Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News As I write the country is lifting virtually all restrictions, Covid cases are rising and I am worried that by allowing the virus to spread further and giving it more space to mutate we will see another more vaccine-resistant strain emerge soon. Right now with so many people pinged to self-isolate the council is struggling to maintain some services as well as struggling to catch up on the backlog from previous lockdowns. On a positive note, despite the pandemic, we managed to achieve 144 additional council homes last year, the most for many many years. The council have adopted a homeless bill of rights and part of our commitment to this includes continuing to make an offer of accommodation to verified rough sleepers. This offer has contributed to bringing down the annual count of rough sleepers by 67%, the best reduction outside London. We are now developing ambitious plans to sustain this by providing long-term secure accommodation with support such as “Housing First”. Another big challenge is the council’s goal of becoming a carbon neutral city by 2030. To succeed, as well as the council needing to do even more, it needs individuals, community groups, business and a huge amount of additional funding from national government. A significant step towards carbon neutrality comes with the new plan for the council’s downland estate. This plan is still being developed but should have at its heart a carbon-negative downland estate and the expansion of the species-diverse precious chalk grassland. Closer to home, I continue to press for any development of the publicly owned Brighton General Hospital site to serve lo-

cal health, housing and community needs rather than luxury housing. Our regular work with GoodGym volunteers and residents that help clear up the ward and paint over the constant flow of fresh graffiti continues. We record thanks to those Hanover residents who tirelessly help keep on painting out graffiti in between GoodGym visits. Particularly Francis Field (who is sadly moving away) working across Hanover and to Simon Bowers (who thankfully isn’t moving!) who has helped to transform the feel of the Phoenix Estate. Anyone else able to step into Francis’s shoes would be so appreciated. Staying positive, here is a picture of the wonderful artwork produced at the top of Hartington Road, with materials funded by the councillor ward budget, and effort and creativity contributed by community members young and older. david.gibson@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Hanover Community Association Hanover Community Association (HCA) is the small charity that manages the Hanover Centre on Southover Street. The charity is run by a committee of voluntary trustees who live locally. It’s been an uncertain year for all of us and the Hanover Centre has had great support from locals and hirers alike. In particular we would like to thank Pat, who runs the Wutan Kung Fu class, so here is a little bit about what he does: Pat from Wutan Brighton

instructor in Brighton, has been teaching for nearly 10 years and regularly visits the head of the school in Southampton to ensure his teaching and forms are correct. The aim of Wutan International is to promote a healthy society from which we can all benefit. By practising and teaching the martial arts of Kung Fu and Tai Chi we aim to improve the mental, physical and spiritual health of ourselves and those around us. Wutan Brighton teaches the martial arts of Kung Fu and Tai Chi in relaxed, friendly classes where everybody is welcome. Our Beginners Kung Fu classes are ideal for those who have never tried before as well as more experienced martial artists who want to try new styles. All our classes aim to promote your fitness and develop your skills at your own pace. Hanover Homeless Project

HANOVER

A local group doing some great work in the area…

The Hanover Homeless Project was set up in early 2016 following an incident involving a homeless person seeking shelter in the garden of the Hanover Community Centre during a snowstorm. We started out informally, as a concerned group of local residents, but have since become a constituted group with plans to become a charity in the future. At the beginning we just had the will to try and make a difference but little idea of how to go about it. We consulted people working in the field and it was suggested we should concentrate on producing ‘Starter Packs’. Our ‘Starter Packs’ are distributed to recently homeless people who have been homed in Brighton and Hove. The packs contain basic items that are essential to enable newly housed people to settle into their new home. Items include cutlery, crockery, toiletries, towels, bedding, cooking utensils and some food and drink items to get them through the first day or so. Typically, the people we support are destitute or on very low incomes. They are referred to us by Brighton Housing Trust, St Mungo’s, or Brighton and Hove City Council, with occasional referrals from local food banks. This year alone we have supported over forty people into their new homes. We are extremely grateful for the support we receive from the people of Brighton and Hove but particularly from the community in Hanover and especially Anthony Murley, Vicar at the Church of The Annunciation, for his ongoing support. Each of our packs cost approximately £65.00. During the pandemic, there has been considerable demand for our niche support. On average this year we have

Four of the Hanover Homeless Project members from left: Tracie Milnes, Roger Dean, Amy Allison and Robert Ashby; photo by Penny Farrar

received requests for ten packs a month and this at a time when COVID restrictions have rendered the traditional fundraising methods we use almost impossible. We are always grateful to receive donations, both financial, (we have a GoFundMe account), and of items that we require for the packs. We are also keen to create a skills list - people who can’t commit to regularly being involved but are happy to help with occasional tasks – graphic design, social media, cake making etc. To find out more you can follow our regular updates on our Facebook page The Hanover Homeless Project or why not visit our cake and second-hand book stall which will be in the garden of the Hanover Community Centre, Southover Street, on Sunday 29th August 13.00-16.00. www.hanoverhomelessproject.co.uk hanoverhomelessprojectbrighton@hotmail.com

10 News from Labour councillor Nick Childs…

Councillor News for Queen’s Park One of our priorities has been assuring the long-term future of St Luke’s Swimming Pool after the Council published its recent leisure strategy for the city. The plan included scant reference to the well-loved pool and earmarked no investment. Following a short campaign, I put a formal question to the Council in July and was delighted to obtain an assurance that the pool will remain part of our long-term leisure provision. Cllr Evans and I shall continue to scrutinise the plans and remain vigilant to any attempt to backtrack by the Administration. Progress continues to be made to address anti-social behaviour in the ward with increased police patrols, reconfiguration of street furniture on St James Street, enforcement orders being issued, CCTV and new fencing in Tarner Park and several properties being closed following intelligence from police as well as arrests being made. We encourage residents to raise sightings of anti-social behaviour and drug crime with police and us as this allows intelligence to be collected and action to address the situation. Following concerns raised by residents of Upper Rock Gardens we have asked the police to start issuing enforcement orders, ban drinking and are meeting with Officers to discuss longer term plans for the area. We have raised several ongoing issues with the Council including the parlous state of the toilets in Queens Park, calling for their restoration; the continuing problem of pavement parking obstructing pedestrians, a calling for a citywide order to prohibit this practice as in London; and again calling for action to address speeding traffic and lack of a crossing on Freshfield Road. The Council continue to refuse to act on the Freshfield Road situation despite many warnings from Cllr Evans and I and the local SpeedWatch group of the risk of an accident. We will continue to campaign for action.

Black Rock and Madeira Terraces regeneration continue with new nature reserves planted, Duke’s Mound partially cleared and work commencing on renovation of the old Reading Room and Temple. The plans will make this part of the city a lovely place to visit with a new play area, toilets, cafés etc. We have argued for an extension of Volk’s Railway to the Marina and hope this can be realised. Finally, Cllr Evans and I proposed the restoration of a high-speed foot/bike/wheelchair passenger ‘channel-bus’ service from Brighton Marina to Dieppe at Council. A crossing last existed in the 1990s and could take under 2 hours to reach France. The link would have a very low carbon profile and bring great economic and cultural benefits, building community wealth in our city. Unfortunately, the Green Council opposed further investigation arguing residents should travel to Newhaven. This was very disappointing as the Newhaven crossing is a car ferry, more polluting and takes four hours. Cllr Evans and I shall continue to campaign for Brighton to have its own low carbon, accessible foot passenger channel crossing. Nick.Childs@brighton-hove.gov.uk

13 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Bark in the Park, which happened too late to be reported in this edition of the Brightonian, has, nevertheless, meant a great deal of engagement with local dog owners over the past few months and has served to remind us all what a powerful lobby group they can be, writes Friends of Queen’s Park chairman Geoffrey Bowden. The lobby swung into action last month and, supported by one of our local Councillors, Clare Rainey, an online community meeting was organised to examine, among many things, why the dog area in Queen’s Park isn’t fully fenced off, as it is in other city parks, such as Withdean. There are distinct advantages to having an area that’s clearly defined and well sign-posted. The likelihood of dogs running into the road is virtually reduced and people entering the area would see clearly that it isn’t an ideal place to sit and have a picnic. I won’t go into all the details of the long and convoluted history of how the dog area came to be so designated. Suffice it to say that, a long while ago, some officers thought it was a good idea to rationalise some by-laws, which resulted in unforeseen consequences. Local campaigners armed with day-glo pink flags highlighted the many unsavoury messages left behind by irresponsible dog owners across the park. The end result was to get the worst effects of the ill-thought out by-laws overturned and we ended up with the current designated area. So why isn’t it completely fenced off? Like so many things these days, it all came down to cost. New lights/sockets Darren Clarke to full re-wires Home Electrical Guaranteed low rates Services Call Darren

Miss Clover, the Irish Terrier, would probably support the dog lobby’s campaign for fencing but is usually far more concerned about holding onto her favourite stick

When campaigners last put this proposition to the Council’s minority administration around 14 years ago, before central government embarked on an austerity programme and when local authorities had more dosh, they were told, “Yes you can have fencing, but you’ll have to raise the money to pay for it yourselves,” or words to that effect. Back of fag packet calculations to fence the whole area are eye-wateringly high, which is probably why no one set about raising the money. Sadly, on the back of further cuts to local authority spending, the dog lobby is likely to receive a similar answer this time round. However, judging by the determination of the individuals I have met, I suspect it will not deter them looking for creative solutions to achieve their objectives and, on a personal basis, wish them every success.

What have they been doing? During the four years the school have been working with STARS, they’ve worked hard to promote active and sustainable travel to their children and their families: • Staff have been trained to deliver balance bike skills training to early years children. • The school has been working to promote Active Travel Fridays throughout the school year, asking parents, carers and children to walk, scoot or cycle at least the last five minutes of a journey or hop off the bus a stop early. • Children and family centred learning on the benefits of physical activity. • Regular class walks all year round, whatever the weather, including learning about road safety.

• Conversations during lunch about healthy eating and good habits. • Parent meetings, evenings and talks include the benefits of walking for children. • Encouraging families to continue the daily walks over lockdown. Jasmin Brackenfield, one of the school’s Kindergarten teachers, said: “Our Travel Advisor, Polly Stebbens at Brighton & Hove City Council, put us forward as she was so impressed by our daily walks. At drop-off, the children put on high-vis vests, greet their friends then set off to East Brighton Park. We walk all year round, no matter what the weather is like, as it’s so good for the children’s physical and mental health. For example, if a child has some stress at home, by the time we return to Kindergarten after our morning walk they are happy, completely in the moment and just ready to play. Walking is excellent for both physical and mental health as it not only increases a child’s resilience, but it also sets good habits of healthy activity for life.”

19 News from the council…

Work on Black Rock site is under way

KEMPTOWN

If you have been down for a stroll along the eastern end of the seafront recently, you will have seen that the Black Rock site is a hive of activity.

The current Black Rock wildlife site

This is part of a large-scale regeneration effort to transform this part of the coastline and enable further development in the future. Plans include biodiversity and accessibility improvements, restoring the Temple and Grade-II listed Old Reading Room, and an expanded sea wall.

Another new pedestrian route through to the Marina is also being created, underneath the current ramps, that will provide the necessary infrastructure for the future possibility of a seafront hopper service along the coast - although this is only a future ambition for now.

Brighton & Hove City Council are also introducing a new seafront classroom as well as new seating and lighting. After consultation with local residents, they have taken on board suggestions for some short-term uses for the space that will be created by these works, such as a temporary BMX ‘pump’ track.

Biodiversity Throughout the planning of this programme of works there has been a strong focus on biodiversity improvements. An ecology trail is being created with reintroduced native plants, wildflowers and chalk grassland.

Improving access There will be a new crossing across the Volk’s Railway to improve access between the beach and the Old Reading Room. The council are also putting in a new decked area and a 3m-wide boardwalk enabling visitors to travel the full length of this section of the beach, that will be fully accessible for wheelchairs and pushchairs. The boardwalk will be part of a new pedestrian route that will run all the way from Duke’s Mound and into the Marina, with access along the new sea wall or through the subway.

The council are also relocating and expanding a local wildlife site, so that they can realign the sea wall. This expansion, that has already begun and will mean a local wildlife site at least five times the size it was, will allow our local plants and animals to thrive. Throughout the planning of the project they have been working closely with biodiversity experts. The whole eastern seafront will start to transform through a masterplan starting later this year, setting out the future vision for the area. School for the Blind This photo of the School for the Blind in Eastern Road was taken in July 1958, shortly before its demolition. It was a Venetian Gothic building designed by Somers Clarke in 1860-61. Initially called the Asylum for the Blind, it was for poor children between the ages of 8 and 16 and was supported by charitable subscriptions. The Charles Hunnisett building of the Royal Sussex County Hospital has since been built on the site.

23 News from Green councillor Leo Littman…

Councillor news for Preston Park ward... For example, as well as representing the residents of Preston Park ward, I chair Planning Committee and sit on Tourism, Equalities, Communities, and Culture Committee. I also sit on two bodies, one internal, one external, which help fund local third-sector organisations and I am Deputy Chair of the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority. I also sit on various other planning-orientated boards and groups. This means our workload is, to say the least, extremely varied.

Meanwhile, in our other roles, we’ve chaired the first round of face-to-face/ hybrid meetings in over a year, ensuring Members, Officers, and members of the

This month, among many other things, my two ward colleagues and I have worked with local ecologists and the Parks Department to determine the best possible ways of helping to protect endangered wildlife in a pond in Preston Park. We have also worked with the newly formed Preston Park & Fiveways Local Action Team, and local sports clubs, to make Preston Park a safer place for all park-users. We organised the removal of a colony of rats from a sheltered housing block, helped numerous residents with parking permit queries and helped Springfield Road residents negotiate the continuation of their use of land owned by Network Rail. Plus, we ensured that graffiti was removed from the Preston Park clocktower and arranged the removal of pavement weeds and undergrowth.

public are all kept as safe as possible. We’ve set up feasibility studies on both introducing a food waste collection scheme, and increasing plastic recycling in the city. We’ve worked to ensure accommodation for rough sleepers continues beyond the end of Covid restrictions and overseen the development of a vision for the Council’s Downland estate. We’ve also organised better coordination between council departments in order to ensure next year’s Fringe Festival runs more smoothly. Greens have also advised residents of a large block in Hove on how to go about getting solar panels installed, worked with Plant Your Postcode on an ambitious programme of tree-planting and agreed tens of thousands of pounds of funding for small local charities, catering to the needs of underprivileged children.

25 News from a local group…

Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods 30th anniversary What does the future hold for our group? For those who remember it The Great Storm of the night of 15th/16th October 1987 was a frightening one as the winds ripped trees from the ground across our city and beyond.

In the clear-up that followed local residents were concerned to see the Council felling, burning and clearing what was left of the woodland, so they persuaded the Council to halt the destruction and with a little bit of funding the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods was formed in 1991 to help restore and improve the woodlands.

...so they persuaded the Council to halt the destruction and with a little bit of funding the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods was formed in 1991 to help restore and improve the woodlands. We had expected to hold a big community celebration of all that we have achieved with the help of our volunteers over the last 30 years but everything has conspired against us. When the Covid-19 restrictions were lifted we were hopeful that we could resume work but we were knocked back again, this time by the Council’s concerns over falling branches from ash trees affected by ash dieback disease. This has severely limited what we can do because ash trees are scattered throughout our woods. We are still waiting for a Council assessment of the risks of working in the vicinity of ash trees, which is somewhat ironic as the public use the woods every day, and at the time of writing, the Council

FIVEWAYS

Our urban woodlands were particularly badly hit and it was a sad sight to see the devastation left in the wake of the storm.

has not advised people to stay clear of the woods. Our group undertakes thorough risk assessments for every work session and takes into account situations like high winds which could bring down a branch, of not only ash trees but any tree! On the one hand the Council is asking conservation groups like ours to plant more trees to help our climate crisis but at the same time is preventing us doing so. Other work we had planned has also been stymied by the Council so the future of our group and its willing volunteers is hanging in the balance waiting for the Council to make some decisions. The committee is seriously worried – will we still be caring for our woods in 2027, 40 years after The Great Storm? Follow us on Facebook or visit www.fhbw.org. uk or better still let your Councillor know you care about your local woods and want some decisions so that our volunteers’ past efforts weren’t in vain.

29 A great local community project…

Florence Road market and café Florence Road Market now have a café in their One Church building, open from Tuesday to Friday. We asked the project team to tell us more about it…

FIVEWAYS

Florence Road Market is deliberately not on the High Street because it’s very much about building community where people live. Relationships are the primary purpose, though we also care passionately about developing the local food system and supporting producers. The market is a One Church Brighton project, and connected to the charity’s other social projects including Chomp, which provides food to low-income families, Rock Farm, where we grow veg while offering therapeutic horticulture, and Pro Baristas, which runs the market coffee stand while also training unemployed people for coffee jobs. The café was a natural extension of the market, especially during the pandemic. So we have converted our century-old church building into a co-working and community space during the week, featuring much of the same produce, as well as fast Wi-Fi, work tables, etc. We also now operate a coffee roasting company, Skylark, which is using all profits to support our projects, fund nature conservation, and counter the exploitation of coffee producers. The market is the only true farmers’ market in Brighton, sadly, and is open every Saturday from 9:30 to 1:30 at the corner of Florence Road and Southdown Avenue. The café is open inside the gorgeous One Church building Tuesday to Friday, 8:30 to 4.

30 News from the council…

Blakers Park playground revamp The children’s play area in Blakers Park is getting a fantastic £100,000 upgrade as part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s £3 million investment in the city’s playgrounds. Work began at Blakers Park in mid-July and is due to be completed just after schools break up for the summer holidays. While the play park is closed, the nearest playground is Preston Park. The redevelopment includes 15 new pieces of play equipment, much of which is wheelchair accessible, with separate areas for older and younger children. As part of the planning process, including what the playground would include, the council consulted and worked with the local Friends of Blakers Park group and carried out pop-up consultations with the public.

The refurbishment is part of council plans to upgrade 45 play areas over the next three years, with 25 sites being finished by the end of the financial year next March. Councillor Amy Heley, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “The £3 million we are investing in 45 of our playgrounds will make a huge difference to the enjoyment children and families will get from these play areas. Not only will the equipment be newer and better, it will also be safer and far more accessible for all children. We have already

32 City news…

Council looks into food waste collection A report to the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 22nd June gave an update on the future introduction of a food waste collection service. The Government has been consulting with local authorities on proposals that they all collect a core set of recycling materials, including food waste, to help drive up recycling rates. If the Government’s proposed changes are adopted, it will be mandatory for local authorities to introduce weekly food waste collections. (This is likely to happen from October 2023.) Under the proposals, councils will also have to collect plastic pots, tubs and trays; aluminium foil, food trays and tubes; and food and drink cartons. In addition, plastic film, eg bread bags, will have to be collected by the end of the 2026/27 financial year. An analysis of the city’s waste in 2020 showed that 37% of the contents of kerbside rubbish bins consisted of food and drink waste. Around 60% of this food waste was deemed avoidable and 53% was packaged. Cityclean have been looking into different waste collection options. For kerbside collections, the option recommended in the report would provide: • Fortnightly residual rubbish collections (a change from weekly) • Fortnightly recycling collections (as per current arrangements) • Weekly food waste (new collection service) • Fortnightly charged garden waste (as per current arrangements) For communal areas, collection arrangements would remain as they are, with the inclusion of a food waste service.

The cost of introducing kerbside food waste collection could be offset by the changes to the frequency of rubbish collections. Cllr Robert Nemeth, speaking for the Conservative group, was concerned about moving to fortnightly rubbish collections, as this could lead to piles of waste on residents’ doorsteps for long periods, especially if collections were missed. He preferred the option of continuing with weekly rubbish collections, in addition to providing a food waste service. Labour councillor Gary Wilkinson said that one of the most recurrent issues in his mailbag is missed bin collections, so he proposed an amendment to explore both options – to retain weekly rubbish collections or to reduce them to fortnightly. Both options would include the weekly food waste service. This was agreed by the committee. A feasibility study and business case will now be completed. There will be consultation with residents, trade unions and staff, and a further report will be brought back to a future committee for decision.

33 A great local business…

Connected Brighton My name is Lyndsey, I’m Brighton born and bred and a Preston Park girl. I love trying new things, meeting new people, sharing stories, eating out, travel, drinks with friends, time with family and all things fitness (mainly to balance out my love of wine and chips!) And Connected Brighton is my baby. Whether you are single or in a couple, just moved to the area or been here forever, if you want to meet new people and try new things then Connected Brighton is for you.

I started the business in response to lockdown and the number of life changing break ups, make ups, job losses, job changes and moves to the coast. I had my own break up and got made redundant, and for a moment wasn’t sure what life post lockdown was going to look like. But I knew I wanted to make the most of it. Feeling inspired to bring like minded people together I saw an opportunity to offer something different that would connect people looking to be part of a supportive community, but that would also support our brilliant local businesses. Helping put cash back in tills and smiles back on faces after a tough year. And so here we are! Several brilliant events later, working with Visit Brighton and fantastic partners we are building a community of fun people who want to do fun things. New events are coming up with great local businesses offering bespoke experiences that showcase what Brighton & Hove has to offer. We are still keeping Covid safe with small groups and being outside where possible.

We can also help with private parties or team building events, get in touch to discuss. Subscribe to my weekly newsletter for recommendations or follow my Instagram for daily tips and promotions. 35 Meet the man in charge of Brighton & Hove’s museums…

Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust CEO Hedley Swain Hedley Swain was appointed six months ago as the first Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust, when the organisation left Brighton & Hove City Council to become a charitable trust. What is your background? I trained as an archaeologist and worked at the Museum of London for many years. Most recently I have been Arts Council England’s director for South East England and worked closely with all the arts organisations in the city – I knew it would be a great place to work.

Really hard work! The first few months with museums closed and the lockdown in place it was particularly tough, I would come into the Royal Pavilion and just have the security staff to talk to. Not getting time to meet all the other staff properly was the hardest bit. It also means we will have a tough financial period with far fewer visitors for a while – that does mean it’s a good time to visit if you can. What are your plans for the future of the Trust? We want to be one of the best museum services in Britain, bringing benefits to the people of Brighton & Hove and welcoming visitors from all over the world. We have great buildings, collections and staff, we now need the opportunity to get the best from all of them. And of course, the Royal Pavilion is unique but we do need to remind Brighton & Hove people to visit – I think many local people take it for granted. Are there any new exhibitions coming up? We have the Bowie photographic exhibition at Brighton Museum as well as

objects on loan from Buckingham Palace at the Royal Pavilion. We have a new exhibition by master ceramicist Richard Slee at Hove Museum at the moment. How can local people support you and get involved? Come and spend your money here. Visit, become a member, donate. We need as much support as possible. But also tell us about your experiences at our sites, it will help us make the service even better. Brighton & Hove residents can enjoy half-price admission to the Royal Pavilion and Preston Manor and free admission to Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. 37 News from the council…

Following extensive repairs to the electrical system, the Prince Regent Swimming Complex reopened on July 12. Since the serious flooding over the Easter weekend, electricians have worked their way through the building, replacing all the damaged wiring and distribution boards - a mammoth and challenging task. Miles of new cabling, along with modern distribution boards, have been installed. For up-to-date information visit Freedom Leisure’s webpages (freedomleisure. co.uk) and social media channels.

The CCTV will help prevent littering at these two hotspots and also allow the environmental enforcement team to hand out fines to those who don’t bin their rubbish properly or take it home. CCTV cameras deployed at the city’s fly-tipping hotspots last October have been hugely successful, catching almost 200 people dumping rubbish where they shouldn’t. Enforcement officers already patrol the whole seafront on foot; however it’s extremely difficult to catch people leaving their rubbish behind. If these people see an officer approaching they simply wait until the officer leaves. The new cameras will allow the officers to be quickly directed to those seen dumping their litter as the cameras will be monitored from the council’s CCTV control room. The cameras are being placed on street lighting columns to monitor the lawns and the central beach and will not face or monitor anything else including housing, hotels, shops, bars or cafés. Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “Our Streets Team collected 100 tonnes of rubbish from the seafront in just 17 days recently, and much of it was from these two areas. The cameras will help act as deterrents so people bin their rubbish responsibly or take it home. If they don’t then these cameras give us a far greater chance of catching people and fining them, which can be as high as £2,500. Everyone knows not to leave litter behind and that it’s a criminal offence, so we must use whatever means necessary to stop these thoughtless people who don’t care what state they leave our beautiful beach and lawns in.”

39 has a purposeful expression; whatever the purpose, it’s going to happen near the beach!

By 11am, there were no deck chairs available between Hove Lawns and the Palace Pier. Day trippers who had come by car to Hove were facing parking challenges: ‘Families arriving at Hove Lawns were determined not to waste a moment, and mother and the children, already in bathing costumes, were in the water before father had parked the car.’ There’s nothing like a local newspaper for creating that nostalgic glow!

On that day in August, while the US were seeing gains in the Korean War, people in Brighton were camping in Sheepcote Valley – 2,500 of them - and enjoying midget car racing at Hove Stadium (now home to dog racing). The issue of the day for the Argus was the ‘Black Rock Racket’. Individuals were illegally selling sticks of Brighton rock on the beaches for seven and a half pence, whereas in the local sweetshops customers had to pay the same price and forfeit two points on their sugar coupons. Rock was traditional on the beach, said the newspaper’s editorial. ‘Why should it not be coupon-free, like ice cream and candy floss?’ www.thekeep.info

The newspaper the following day reported that ‘thousands’ were arriving daily to swell the already-existing holidaymakers. Five hundred people had brought bedding with them and were sleeping out beneath the piers, on the beaches and on the Madeira Drive esplanade – presumably under the arches. Many of them apparently bathed before breakfast ‘in a flat-calm sea’ and ‘boatmen prepared early for a big-business day’.

Zippos Circus at Hove Lawns

GENERAL

Zippos Circus is returning to Hove Lawns from 30 July to 15 August with a diverse cast of thrilling artists from around the globe.

In the fast-moving spectacle, astonishing acrobats and aerialists, comics and daredevil motorcyclists will come together from all corners of the world for this year’s colourful production featuring Brazilian showman Paulo Dos Santos, who is a multi-talented comic, acrobat and martial artist - and stands at just over a metre tall. Charismatic Paulo has been with Zippos Circus for several years and is beloved by audiences young and old. This will be his first year as Ringmaster on the show, a testament to his popularity. Returning by popular demand will be the famous Globe of Death with its team of motorcyclists performing high velocity stunts; plus amazingly ‘elastic’ tumblers from Kenya; nail-biting knife-throwing from the Czech Republic; hand-balancing from the Garcia family featuring their talented teenage sons; and high-adrenaline skills via an astonishing Wheel of Death.

Martin Burton, Founder and Director of Zippos Circus, commented: “I cannot tell you how pleased we are to be back on the road again. We have worked tirelessly with the government and public health authorities to get the show back on tour in line with official regulations and guidance and are now confident that we can do so in a Covid-secure manner. The outdoor nature of the circus and well-ventilated Big Top plus socially distanced seating and a range of new hygiene and safety measures will all help ensure that Zippos Circus will be a safe place for both our performers and families to enjoy and we look forward to welcoming everybody to our new show.” There are shows at 3pm and 7pm from Monday to Saturday and on Sundays at 12pm and 4pm. Tickets cost from £13 and are available from zippos.seetickets.com.

43 Carrying on a Brighton woman’s legacy by funding a school in Uganda…

Fundraising for a school A few years ago a Brighton woman called Zara was on a trip in Uganda. She was surprised to see kids everywhere. Her tour guide explained to her that the kids were not in school because the nearest one was 10 miles away. So Zara decided to do something about that and donated £600 towards building a school and finding some teachers. In 2016, the school was built and opened its doors to 20 children. The tour guide, whose name is Elias, has been running the school since then.

We are carrying on her legacy by partnering up people from the UK (mainly from Brighton) with language students from Russia who are willing to pay for a chance to practise their English. Since the start of this initiative, six Brightonians have spoken online to language students. This has fundraised money to pay for teachers’ salaries and buy food, water tanks and books. Some of this money was used to build a basic dormitory so the children who have to travel from further areas can stay overnight. When the dormitory is fully built, they won’t have to paddle for 30-40 minutes across a lake each day to reach the school! But to finish the construction, they need another £500.

My language students from Russia will benefit from talking to someone whose mother tongue is English. That will help You can make a huge difference for these them with their speaking skills and confidence so they are happy to pay! children. If you have a chance to talk for 30 minutes to someone who is learnIf all goes well, as soon as the dormitory is ing English as a foreign language, it will finished the plan is to then start building a help to fundraise £5 per each talk. The West Pier An undated photograph of the West Pier, Regency Square and the King’s Road frontage. It was probably taken in the early or middle 1900s and gives a good view of the Metropole Hotel. The West Pier opened in 1866 and was extended in 1893 but closed to the public in 1975. Its peak popularity was in the period between the two world wars.

47 A new portrait of Brighton by Orlando Gough…

Brighton book…Coming and Going Orlando Gough grew up in a flat inside Brighton College, where his father was a House Master. He is now a composer of operas and choral music and has just published a portrait and memoir of Brighton, where he still lives, called “Coming & Going”. Why did you decide to write a book?

Tell us more about “Coming & Going”… It’s part memoir, part psychogeography (whatever that may be), part history, occasionally fiction. George the Fourth, Dusty Springfield, seagulls, Edward Carpenter and my brother Jamie, Le Gateau Chocolat, Biba, bungaroosh, Haile Selassie and Max Miller, flint penises, Wartz, Elizabeth Robins, Fatboy Slim, Gandhi, Ranji, Caroline Lucas, vegan fish and chips…. Essentially it’s a sequence of stories; but at the same time it’s fascinated by the relationship of past and present, of fact and fiction, of the urban landscape and the natural world. What was it like growing up inside a school? Weird, but not horrible; there was a ready-made community, and amazing facilities: swimming pool, tennis courts, roofs to climb on. The balcony of our flat was directly above the school kitchen. I learnt, from my brother Jamie, about guerrilla cookery, poking snails and earth and weeds through the air conditioning vents into the custard. I

learnt how to climb trees, how to reflect sunlight into my father’s classroom, how to ride a bike with no brakes, how to provoke the Head Master. What part of the city are you living in now? Just off the Western Road, in a street full of beautiful houses and interesting, frisky neighbours. It’s also a street for hen parties, a street for drug deals, a street for vulnerable people. It’s a full-on urban street. What are your favourite parts of Brighton? The area just south of Seven Dials with its beautiful houses, its view to the sea, the atmospheric St Nicholas Rest Garden…..the North Laine with its quirky shops, its sophisticated graffiti….the Undercliff walk from the Marina to Saltdean, between astonishing chalk cliffs and the sea……Southwick Beach, where industry meets the sea, with its beautiful eroded wooden groynes. “Coming and Going” by Orlando Gough is published by Uniformbooks (uniformbooks. co.uk). and is available from Magazine Brighton, City Books, The Kemptown Bookshop and Waterstones.

It was a classic lockdown project. Here I was, spending my entire time in Brighton, looking around and thinking, this is a very interesting place. And this is a place that has been a formative influence on my life.

Opening up the North Laine Gateway

A drawing of the proposed regenerated arches

A current view of the arches

One of the first things visitors to Brighton see is a gloomy underpass daubed with graffiti and strewn with old posters and stickers. It’s funny to think that this underpass houses one of Brighton and Hove’s most individual visitor attractions: Brighton Toy and Model Museum.

additional 10% from the Toy Museum, we are already at the halfway mark and are now looking for additional partners to help with match-funding. North Laine is a vibrant area known for its many quality independent traders, but is often overlooked as visitors head straight from the station to the sea. If you are able to contribute to this fantastic scheme, please contact Brighton Toy and Model Museum (info@brightontoymuseum.co.uk).

Brighton Toy and Model Museum, working alongside Benedict O’Looney Architects and the Railway Heritage Trust, have submitted a planning application to replace the modern brickwork which fills the Victorian arches with glazing to regenerate the area by bringing light and life to the underpass, making Trafalgar Street the “Gateway to the North Laine”. Brighton and Hove Tourism Alliance and Network Rail are also involved in regeneration proposals, with plans of their own to improve the space beneath Brighton railway station’s entrance. Their contribution to the project includes a plan for the removal of the tattered posters and graffiti at the top of Trafalgar Street, replacing it with an attractive new mural instead. The Railway Heritage Trust has pledged 40% of the structural costs, and with an

Jan Etches, Brighton Toy and Model Museum’s General Manager, said: “We are keen to use this opportunity to regenerate our end of Trafalgar Street so that visitors to Brighton get a much improved first impression of the city and also draw their attention to Trafalgar Street and the other wonderful North Laine independent traders. We hope that everyone gets as excited about this project to improve our community as we are!” Brighton Toy and Model Museum is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It was established in 1991 by Chris Littledale to share his love of toys and models, and houses one of the finest collections in the world.

Edinburgh Fringe star Ty Jeffries brings his award-winning Miss Hope Springs: I’ve Been Around show, a riotous tragi-comic story of rags to bitches! Carol Harrison’s acclaimed celebration of The Small Faces, All Or Nothing: The Experience, returns in a new concert staging that truly evokes that period of mod style and fashion.

The Bootleg Beatles

Burchill’s brand new musical co-written with Caroline Gold, Hard Times On Easy Street, is also premiering on the pier. And keep an eye open for local radio hero Guy Lloyd and his show Bangers & Mash, and cabaret star Miss Jason with friends. August is jam-packed with free films on the Big Screen including all-time classic Casablanca, wonderful Brighton film My Accomplice, and Harry Loves Meghan, produced by Bill Smith of Latest TV. Finally, it’s hard to believe but Brighton has never had its own jazz festival (unless readers can correct us?). Well, that is all being put right by PierFest working together with New Generation Jazz. The summer-long festival on Brighton Palace Pier ends with a five-day jazz show from Wednesday 29th September to Sunday 3rd October. If it’s music you want, The Dolly Parton Story is a wonderful show depicting the life of country music’s biggest star. Barb Jungr has built a reputation around the world for her interpretation of the songs of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Jacques Brel and the Beatles, and she is bringing her tribute to some of the greatest songwriters of the last 60 years. And speaking of The Beatles, who can resist The Bootleg Beatles, the crown princes of Beatles bands.

63 News from the council…

Refurb for public toilets A total of £2.7 million will be spent upgrading 11 of the busiest public toilets in the city, the council has agreed.

At the same time, the council has also agreed to end its contract with toilet company Healthmatic and begin running the service ‘in-house’. The current contract will end on 31 January when the 36 loos will be directly maintained by the council. The current Healthmatic staff will then be employed by the council. The move comes after the council decided it wanted more control over the cleaning, maintenance and refurbishment of the toilets. Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “I’m delighted to announce the £2.7 million investment to refurbish key toilets in some of the busiest and most prominent

areas of the city. We know work is greatly needed to improve our public toilets, so we are pleased this investment will put us back on track, providing a higher quality service for residents and visitors alike.” The toilets earmarked for an upgrade are: Goldstone Villas, Hove Lagoon, King’s Esplanade, Lower Promenade East of Brighton Pier, Peter Pan, Royal Pavilion Gardens, Station Road, St Ann’s Well Gardens, The Colonnade, The Level and Western Esplanade. Cllr Mac Cafferty added: “Cleaning and maintaining the council’s 36 toilets is an extremely important yet often difficult task. We now feel it’s time to bring public toilets back in-house to ensure we have direct management and better accountability.”

Rampion Wind Farm Expansion Draft proposals have been produced for an expansion of the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm off the Sussex coast and a consultation is now under way until 16 September. The expansion will comprise up to a maximum of 116 turbines and could generate clean electricity for an extra one million homes. A decision has not yet been made on the specific height, number or arrangement of the turbines, but they could be around 75% taller than the existing Rampion turbines, and the project could generate three times the power output of the operating Rampion project. 65 An event to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society on 18 September…

Brighton Memory Walk 2021 Brighton and Hove residents are being invited to don their walking gear, lace up their boots, and unite against dementia by signing up to Alzheimer’s Society’s Brighton Memory Walk this autumn.

Over a year since the pandemic began, people with dementia are still bearing the brunt of coronavirus and demand for Alzheimer’s Society’s services is still increasing. Memory Walk will bring together people who have been personally affected by dementia, those who want to walk to remember a loved one, and people looking for a fun-filled activity to raise money for charity at 20 locations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Supporters can also opt to walk on their own, or with loved ones, on the paths, pavements, parks or pebbles in a location of their choosing throughout September.

By marching out in support of Alzheimer’s Society, walkers will raise crucial funds to help the charity reach more people through its vital services, like the Dementia Connect support line, which have been used more than five million times since March 2020. Sign up for free at alzheimers.org.uk/ memorywalk.

67 Cabaret, comedy and live music…

Pride at the Ironworks Although Brighton & Hove Pride are unable to hold their usual large-scale Pride events this year, they are holding an extensive season of smaller LGBTQ+ cultural events supporting LGBTQ+ artists and the wider community, while fundraising for their essential local charities and community groups. Pride at the Ironworks, supported by Tesco, is a season of cabaret, comedy and live music, campaigning and politics. The Identity Project, a stunning collection of portraits of the LGBTQ+ community, will also premiere simultaneously at the Ironworks and the Jubilee Library during Pride month celebrations in August.

Paul Kemp, Director of Brighton Pride said, “Our initial Pride cultural season will run from August to September and will launch a year-round programme incorporating Black History Month in October, LGBTQ+ History Month in February and potentially a Winter Pride season.” The stage at The Ironworks is set for upcoming performances from the likes of former Blue member Duncan James; Hannah Brackenbury’s Victorious, the award-winning musical comedy tribute to Victoria Wood; London-based electro pop-persona Girli; and the UK’s only gender-diverse pan-Asian cabaret collective Bitten Peach. There’s also an evening with LGBTQ+ icon Heather Peace; musical cabaret from Epicene celebrating iconic women in music; the gloriously bonkers, utterly over-thetop, delightful LipSinkers; the LGBTQ+ oneman show Bottom from Willy Hudson; local
