FIVEWAYS
One silver lining has been, however, an awakening of the sense of community amongst many people - the idea that man is not an island but part of something much bigger and how one’s neighbour is doing is actually an extension of how we ourselves are doing. It is an approach that amongst the disruption and upset has actually led to many great community initiatives. Once a vaccine is rolled out and life hopefully returns to near normal, let’s remember that valuable lesson learnt in 2020.
GENERAL
So finally 2020 comes to an end and what a challenging time it has been. So many fundamental changes to virtually everybody’s lives with lots of upheaval and worry.

Burning the Clocks Lantern Trail Burning the Clocks is traditionally held in Brighton on 21st December, the shortest day of the year, to usher in the coming year.
Covid-19 restrictions have made it impossible for Same Sky to produce the annual parade and fire show this year, but that hasn’t stopped them creating some seasonal lantern cheer in North Laine and the South Lanes from 2nd to 21st December. There will be a trail of 12 bespoke artist lanterns (one for each number on the clock) in shop windows and the artists will post their progress on Facebook. Scan the QR code in each window to find out more about the lantern, the artist and the creative shop hosting it. To keep updated, visit www.facebook.com/events/827833317952193
Prince Regent Swimming Complex The popular Prince Regent Swimming Complex in Church Street reopened shortly before the second lockdown with new and improved lighting and heating systems.
While the centre was closed for the first lockdown, there was an opportunity to carry out major projects including replacing the old lighting system in the pool hall with new LED lighting and installing a more energy-efficient ‘on demand’ water heating system. Further plans to replace the air handling units have been rearranged for Easter 2021. Brighton & Hove City Council says that additional safety measures have been meticulously planned and put in place at the centre to reassure visitors, once the centre hopefully reopens again in December. All staff have received training on the new protocols and the importance of supporting customers to safely return to activity and fitness. Pre-showers will be available before swimming. Swimming sessions and other activities need to be pre-booked. Activities and classes can be booked 10 days in advance for members and three days in advance for non-members. Online bookings can be made up to 60 minutes prior to the start time. Visit www.freedom-leisure.co.uk/centres/ prince-regent-swimming-complex/

9 Councillor news from Elaine Hills, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…
It’s been a difficult November, with lockdown restrictions hitting us hard. But our community has pulled together and adapted, with more local businesses offering food and essential services this time. However, not all can do this. We can help the community bounce back by buying local products online this Christmas. The Facebook page Hanover Creative Christmas Market showcases a range of beautiful creations by our talented arts and crafts community. And Brighton in a Box offers locally made products in sustainably made gift boxes: https://thisisbrightoninabox.com. We know that low air quality and sedentary lifestyles exacerbate the effects of Covid, while fumes from petrol and diesel vehicles cause global warming. Walking and cycling are easy forms of exercise, with the bonus of getting you from A to B, so we’re encouraging people to travel actively rather than by the car. I was very pleased that the council received over £2m from the Government to fund initiatives to reallocate road space, and make both active travel and social distancing easier. As a recently appointed member of the Environment Transport and Sustainability (ETS) committee, I’m very excited about taking this forward. We will consult with residents on this, to ensure that the changes benefit everyone. Closer to home, I’m working with the Hanover Liveable Neighbourhood (HLN) group, on the low traffic neighbourhood scheme soon to be piloted here. We aim to make our streets safer and air cleaner by discouraging outside traffic from cutting through our narrow streets. This should encourage more local people and their children to travel actively too. To share your vision of what your ideal, liveable street would look like, go to: hanoverandelmgrove.net/liveable-neighbourhoods
In September, I helped set up a ‘popup parklet’ with other HLN group members behind the Grey’s pub. Resident Jane Thorp described it as, ‘A small oasis, with astroturf, garlands of autumn leaves, pot plants, flowers, tables and chairs.’ Parklets allow people to relax and socialise outdoors. At a recent ETS committee meeting, I asked if we could introduce parklets in Brighton and Hove, and a report on parklets is now coming to a future committee. Last month, I chaired my first Corporate Parenting Board. Being a corporate parent means doing our best for the city’s young people in care and recent care leavers. It was wonderful to hear the positive experiences of two local foster carers at the meeting, who said that providing a home for these vulnerable children was the best thing they’d ever done. www.fosteringinbrightonandhove.org.uk Finally, I’ve been supporting the Multicultural School Book Fund, a brilliant campaign by Hanover resident Lisa Haygarth, which aims to increase the number of books in our schools by writers and illustrators of colour, featuring characters from BAME backgrounds. https://www.gofundme.com/f/multicultural-school-book-fund Elaine.Hills@brighton-hove.gov.uk

11 An uplifting celebration of live music in challenging times…
The Advent Sessions Three Hanover artists, Emma Higham, Freya Wynn-Jones and Helen Nelder, have banded together to create The Advent Sessions: live music created by the community, for the community, all from the security and warmth of everyone’s own homes. The intention is to bring neighbours together by safely listening to live music and supporting a brilliant local charity in the process.
The intention is to bring neighbours together by safely listening to live music and supporting a brilliant local charity in the process. The Advent Sessions will take place every night from 12th-23rd December at 6pm. One musician and one street will feature, performing a short uplifting session for their street and neighbours. Inspired by Hanover’s Advent Windows and the musicians who played during the first lockdown, Emma says: “There have been so many beautiful stories up and down the country which show how people’s resourcefulness and creativity has helped relieve moments of isolation and stress. We are excited to see what is possible in the run up to Christmas when so many of our usual ways to come together are on hold.”
Freya is all too aware of the impact on the music industry: “We all know how painful it has been to see the paralysis of live music over the last months for music makers and fans of live music. We hope this can reconnect us, even in the smallest of ways.” On Christmas Eve, restrictions permitting, The Advent Sessions will culminate in a Christmas sing-along in the Royal Spa Nursery grounds – bring your own blanket and a flask of hot chocolate, tone up your tonsils and join in. Donations will be collected for The Choir With No Name who will be supporting the sing-along. “It is a challenge in the current pandemic,” says Helen, “to create an event that is Covid-safe but we are working hard to ensure the event is run in strict compliance to Council rules with regard to Covid health and safety. The prospect of leaning out of my window and listening to live music floating over the Hanover rooftops is so exciting - I can’t wait!” If you are a musician and would like to be involved please contact Emma Higham at rapt.theatre@gmail.com

15 An update from the Hanover Community Association…
Hanover Community Association It may have been ‘raining cats and dogs’ recently, but in Hanover it’s reigning cats and dogs! Regular visitors to the Hanover Centre garden, already familiar with Process Pup, might have the pleasure of meeting Marmalade too. Marmalade is often to be found lounging around when she is not busy surveying her grounds, firmly (and furrily) establishing herself as Queen of the Garden. Thank you to Georgia for this regal portrait.
Windmill Young Actors (ages 5-21) have continued online, but nothing beats live drama, and they are eager to return. So, if you or your young ones need an outlet or inspiration for expression, check out their website: www.windmillyoungactors.com Another ‘alive and kicking’ class is Wutan Kung Fu who have very kindly supported us during lockdown by continuing to pay for their room hire while the centre is closed. They hold both adult and children’s classes; find out more here: www. wutanbrighton.co.uk ‘Bring a Bauble’ - It has been difficult to plan and decorate for Christmas in the Centre so this year we are bringing Christmas outside into the garden. Please help us decorate our garden from Tuesday, 1st December by bringing along a decoration and hanging it on our tree and shrubs. If you cannot reach, there will be a box to leave your decoration and we will hang it from the higher branches for you. All we ask is that they are not made of glass in case they fall and shatter which will be dangerous for Marmalade and our regular four and two-legged visitors. We will also be taking part in the Hanover Advent Calendar this year, so keep a watch out for our windows in Southover Street being lit up.
The Centre successfully re-opened in The HCA wishes everyone a joyful holiday September with a reduced number of and all the best for 2021! adult classes which could operate within the guidelines. Just when we thought it was safe to do so, more children’s activities returned at the beginning of November - Toddler Group, Musical Bumps and Sunshine Baby Boogie - only to be thwarted at the outset by the second lockdown. These activities will be back when we reopen and we look forward to welcoming them and their attendees. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

16 Meet a local resident who’s written a children’s adventure series set in Brighton…
Local author – Jack Noddings Jack Noddings of Elm Grove has written a children’s magical adventure series, Way And The Witch, set in Brighton. The main character lives in Hanover. The first book, Giggling Zombies In Brighton, received a great response and the second, Saving Christmas, is to be released in December, with 30% of profits going to local children’s charity Rockinghorse. What is your background? I’m from a village outside Brighton called Forest Row, and went to school in Horsham. I’ve been a jobbing TV comedy writer for the last ten years, working with Channel 4, BBC Three and Comedy Central, among others. I’m now self-publishing the Way And The Witch series and the response from the local community has been very encouraging. Tell us more about Way And The Witch… Way And The Witch is a magical adventure children’s book series about 11-yearold Way from Hanover and her best friend Stella, a witch. They have to protect Brighton from things called Wild Enchantments, a very dangerous kind of magic. It’s a fun, high energy series with lots of twists and turns and plenty of heart! Why did you set the books in Brighton? It’s my home and I love it. It’s so unique! I liked the idea of mixing Brighton’s vibrant character with a magical adventure story.
Jack’s nephew Tenzin Keal enjoying Way And The Witch Plus, when I was young, I would have been so excited to have read a book set in places I knew - it would have made the experience much more personal. “I’ve been there!”, “I know where that is!” That’s what I imagined young Brightonians saying as I wrote it.

What age group are the books suitable for?
Why did you choose to support Rockinghorse? I was born with club foot and had multiple operations at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital, which the Rockinghorse raises money for. I needed a charity to appear in the first book and it seemed like an obvious fit. They have been very supportive of the book. A Figgy Christmas
Why not give us a try…
20 News from Green councillor Clare Rainey…
Councillor News for Queen’s Park ward Covid-19: As the pandemic continues and we enter lockdown phase two, the council is working hard to ensure all those who need access to support can get it. If you are in need of any assistance with shopping and deliveries, emergency assistance, keeping your home warm or even mental health support, there are teams who can help. We were pleased to see that many of the city’s arts and cultural institutions such as the Pavilion and Museum received some funding from government. However in what continue to be testing times, we will keep pushing for sufficient support for our city’s businesses, self-employed workers and cultural and arts institutions, as well as our residents. In addition to what the council can provide, there will be services that we anticipate will need ever increasing support in the future, as people navigate their way through this crisis, and its mental and physical health impacts. At a recent meeting of all councillors, I secured agreement that BHCC will ask the government to recognise, research, communicate and address the long-term impacts of the pandemic and lockdown. We will also raise with government our concerns that additional funding is needed for mental health and other services as the impact of the lockdown continues, and I will continue to raise this issue. Tidy up campaign: I have had a number of Duke of Edinburgh award volunteers helping me this year and their work culminated in a beach clean as part of efforts to improve the local environment. Previously to this they carried out a survey of residents and their priorities and identified litter and graffiti as major concerns. More
clean-ups are planned for the future. If you are interested in getting involved please contact me at the email address below. Queens Park playground: Having donated my ward budget to repairing and improving the equipment in Queens Park playground I recently met with Friends of Queens Park and the newly appointed playground officer to identify the best way to proceed with this. I am really pleased that the desperately needed repairs are finally being progressed and that Queens Park playground has been recognised as a priority. St James’s Street: Work continues to improve the St James’s Street environment with business owners and community volunteers getting involved. A recent walking tour of the street identified quick, easy and cost-effective ways of improving how the street looks. Traffic calming measures: Due to ongoing traffic speeding problems I have been working with local residents to establish a speedwatch team in the Queens Park area and we are currently looking for volunteers. Please contact me if you are interested in getting involved. We are also looking at improving signage and traffic monitoring. Clare Rainey Clare.Rainey@brighton-hove.gov.uk

23 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…
When pressed Johnny Webb, the Friends of Queen’s Park’s (FoQP) outgoing chairman, is vague about how long he’s occupied the post. “Perhaps five years, but that’s a guess,” he says. All of which gives credence to the old adage ‘How time flies when you are enjoying yourself!’ writes Geoffrey Bowden. “The park had an air of neglect about it when I took on the role – particularly the pond.” In fact, taxi drivers dropping him home after a day’s graft in London at his award-winning television production company, Sundog Pictures, often passed negative comments about it. “Thankfully our stalwart, Chris Lowe, along with other committee members, have worked hard to make it a jewel in the park’s crown.” He’s reluctant to name check every individual who’s played a part during his term, but when pressed a wry smile spreads across his face as he recalls the late Ann Ewings. Not only was she a demon arm twister getting companies to donate prizes for the annual Picnic in the Park fundraiser raffle, she was also a vociferous advocate for the park’s wildfowl. Council officials knew they hadn’t a chance but to agree to her lobbying and installed an electric fence to deter foxes from nabbing any hapless goose when it came to draining the pond to reline it. “Great idea, but it largely fell to me, my children and other committee members to act as geese herders!”

QUEENS PARK
Johnny, it was good…

The events programme features strongly in Johnny’s look-back highlights. “It was great to see the park establish itself as a destination not just for the immediate neighbourhood, but also the rest of the city,” although he was quick to point out Bark in the Park regularly attracts dog owners from further afield. “Apart from our events, Brighton Festival has used the park and the nearby Pepperpot as a backdrop for some of its most spectacular attractions and that’s left me feeling chuffed.” One of the less glamorous achievements was working with Council officials to develop a Management Plan. “It was an important piece of work that allowed us to highlight what’s unique about the park as a piece of Downland with heritage status and has laid the necessary groundwork for the park’s long-term future.” COVID has temporarily put paid to the park’s outdoor events, but signing off with some optimism Johnny Webb said: “I am confident that they’ll be back and I’ll be there to support the new committee to make them a success!”

27 Meet a local film-maker…
Kemptown person… Ruby Phelan Ruby Phelan is a film-maker and director who lives in Kemptown. Her debut short film “The Mermaid and The Artist”, made on Brighton beach, has just won the Rome Independent Prisma Award for the best experimental short film.
What is “The Mermaid and The Artist” about? The Mermaid and The Artist is about the male gaze within art and storytelling. It follows the story of an uninspired artist who spies a mermaid in the Brighton sea and becomes obsessed with her image. Upon falling in love with the mermaid he descends into dreamlike utopias and swirls through a world of creation and art making until the mermaid gets her own back. The film questions the idea of the muse and the female body being objectified. Are you using Brighton-based actors? Yes, my brother and myself have grown up in Brighton and we both trained at drama school in France and I have most recently attended RADA in London. All of my team were Brighton based and my brother is the main actor in the film. I was very blessed to have him and we worked very collaboratively in our pre-production period.
It was probably the amount of artwork that had to be completed in the time frame. My bedroom became an amalgamation of hundreds of paintings of mermaids and I actually felt like I embodied the artist’s obsessive qualities whilst I was drawing, which was very funny. Although this challenge gave me an opportunity to develop my artwork and my drawing style, which I’ve only just discovered, so I was incredibly grateful for the immersive experience of the work.

What was the most challenging part of making the film?
How can we see “The Mermaid and The Artist”? The Mermaid & The Artist is currently circulating around several film festivals but I will post events and chances to watch the film via my production company’s Instagram and my own personal Instagram: @suver_nuver_productions and @ ruby_decourcy What are you working on now? I am currently developing my second short which will hopefully be shot this winter and also acting in my brother’s short film which will be shot around the same time. We are always looking for new passionate artists to collaborate with and trying to expand our artistic voices and challenge our skills. Replacement of heritage lanterns
Councillors for Kemptown
Inspections of more than 80 lanterns on Marine Parade and Madeira Drive found that 20 posed a safety risk and should be removed and replaced urgently. Forty more will be replaced within the next 12 months. The work will see both the bracket and lanterns from each of the affected columns removed and replaced with temporary lighting until a permanent solution can be found. The replacements will ensure pavements and streets will continue to be well lit throughout the winter months. Contractors have been instructed to try and preserve the original materials wherever possible and an independent consultancy firm who specialise in lighting will be working with English Heritage to consider long-term solutions to restore the historic lanterns. Please report any faulty or dangerous street lighting to the council. If you have any questions about street lighting in the city, You can contact the team directly by email streetlighting@brighton-hove.gov.uk

St Mark’s Church It was intended primarily as a chapel for St Mary’s Hall School. St Mark’s soon superseded St George’s as the church for the recently built Kemp Town Estate, but closed as the parish church in 1986 due to declining attendances and was then taken over by the school. St Mary’s Hall School closed in 2009 and the chapel was gifted to the parish of St George’s. It is currently used as The Spire community arts centre. This photo was taken around 1909. 35 Paula Wrightson, Venue Officer at Preston Manor, on Christmas past…
An Edwardian Christmas at Preston Manor I am frequently asked, at this time of year, how the resident household celebrated Christmas at Preston Manor and I’m afraid I don’t know. Charles and Ellen Thomas-Stanford, the last private inhabitants, did not leave us evidence by way of diaries, letters, or photographs of their celebrations.
A prettily decked Christmas tree would be placed in the hall, gifts sourced from the most fashionable tradesmen and department stores; a church service on Christmas morning, an afternoon walk in the gardens if the weather was fine. At Sandringham gifts were presented to the hard-working servants and estate workers, “handsomely bound books, articles of jewellery, etc from the King, and books, art pottery, art needlework, wood carving and silk dresses from the Queen”. The crowning ceremony of the day was Christmas dinner, an evening meal for the Edwardian upper-class. Servants clad in splendid liveries stood at attention in the new Preston Manor dining room (added in 1905), tables were laden with the best china and plate and decorated with hothouse flowers. The menu would include beef, turkey, plum pudding and mince pies, foodstuffs we would recognize today. After the meal Ellen would emulate her Queen in leading the ladies to the drawing room for chatter or a game of bridge leaving the men to port, cigars and talk of sport and politics.
FIVEWAYS
So, we must turn to contemporary sources describing Christmas celebrations in other grand residences. A 1904 article, “Christmas with the King and Queen” in The London Magazine, tells of Christmas at Sandringham as celebrated by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Ellen Thomas-Stanford at Preston Manor would aim for a Brighton equivalent. © Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove
Christmas celebrations lasted into the night. At Sandringham, the servants had their Christmas dinner the following day. However, I can’t picture Ellen Thomas-Stanford doing as the royals did and joining the merriment below stairs. Her son John described his mother as “a terrific snob”. Former housemaid Ethel Cook, interviewed aged 78 in 1984, says of a servants’ Christmas, festivities were “only what we made ourselves”. When asked, “Did you get any presents from upstairs?” she replied, “Oh, no.” Charles and Ellen sometimes spent Christmas on the balmy island of Madeira, changing the festive mood downstairs back home. Then “in the servants’ hall they really had fun, and they had the workers, the men would join in with the celebrations and they had a party. All above board of course.” To check opening times and find out more about Preston Manor visit www.brightonmuseums.org.uk

Hollingbury Golf Course under new management... An historic golf course in Brighton is marking a new chapter in its 100-year history.
The new venue will offer a variety of leisure, sporting and social opportunities... The new venue will offer a variety of leisure, sporting and social opportunities – ranging from a round of golf, lessons, equipment for sale, yoga classes and osteopathic and physiotherapy treatment to a Sunday roast or wedding celebration. Former European Tour Pro David Allen has been brought on board to manage the golf course. David’s vision is to provide a community-based affordable golf facility. He has also been looking at how to keep walkers safe by clearly defining the existing footpaths and opening up new pathways to direct walkers away from the dangers of wayward golf balls. He plans to increase footpath signage so that the routes that cut across the course to the Hillfort can be seen more easily.

Hollingbury Golf Course is now under new management after The Circle Brighton Limited was granted a lease from Brighton & Hove City Council. The new food menu offers more healthy and nutritious options, and a wide selection of drinks is available from the bar.
Rachel Cameron, Head of Operations at The Circle, said: “Our ambition is to create an inviting environment for everyone to enjoy: golfers, walkers with or without their dogs, Hillfort visitors, or those who just want to sit and have a tea, coffee and a snack while taking in the wonderful views of the South Downs and south coast. 39 News from Green councillor Martin Osborne…
Councillor News for Hollingdean & Stanmer ward
First and foremost, is the campaign for a local trial for a Universal Basic Income (UBI). I feel this has massive potential to benefit people in the city and, as well as empowering people, it could help to reduce economic insecurity and poverty that are likely to increase because of the pandemic and perhaps it could even go some way to restoring people’s faith in government. At the end of last year, I co-founded the group Basic Income South East and after several months of campaigning and a widely signed petition to the council, at the recent full council in October, the council supported the idea. We already have plans for the future so watch this space and get in contact if you want to hear more. coal. Part of the issue, I feel, is the lack of monitoring of the problem and so I’ve called for a more open approach, which embraces citizen science, and utilisation of a network of small scale, local monitors to identify hotspots. Also, I’ve suggested a range of other proposals such as expansion of smoke control zones across the city which are being considered. I’m in the process of setting up a campaign group to further interest in air quality, raise awareness and research about what can be done to combat this, so again watch this space and let me know if you are interested in getting involved. Finally, I am passionate about the environment and recently I’ve called for the council to provide better information on how to get more wildflowers in place across the city. There are some fantastic examples of this, including in the new Valley Gardens scheme, but with many unused grass verges throughout the city there is a great opportunity to provide wildlife with corridors to cross the city and to enhance biodiversity. I’m hoping that my ward, Hollingdean and Stanmer, can become a ‘Wildflower Ward’ where we can test out plans and put the process into action. Councillors have powers to influence the decisions which affect how the city works but with a centralised government and other external pressures, many of us also get involved in campaigning on issues that are important to us. In this piece, I thought I’d comment on a few of the larger campaigns that I have taken a lead on as a councillor over the last year.

41 Brighton past and present...
Daddy Longlegs This picture of the Brighton and Rottingdean Seashore Electric Railway, nicknamed the “Daddy Longlegs”, is from Calvin Partridge’s new 40-page colour book “Brighton’s Past Brought To Life”.
When first built, Volk’s Railway ended at Banjo Groyne, opposite Paston Place. Magnus Volk wished to continue all the way to Rottingdean, but the terrain made it impossible for a conventional line so he came up with this extraordinary invention to continue the journey. The sea train ran from 1896 to 1901. Old photo from Illustrated London News, 5 December 1896.

42 News from the council…
Facelift for basketball court
Urban design consultation
The council’s Seafront Office have teamed up with VisitBrighton to give the Seafront Basketball Court a well-needed sprucing up.
Everyone in the city is invited to share their views on new guidance for the design of buildings and open spaces. The Urban Design Framework will be used to guide planning applications and ensure designers and developers provide high quality new buildings and attractive public spaces that are usable for all residents.
The court surface has been repaired and repainted with splashes of purple and magenta, the colours used for the #NeverNormalBrighton campaign, and new backboards also sport VisitBrighton logos. These improvements will not only improve the facilities for players but will hopefully give this much-loved facility a new lease of life. In the summer, as we all started to come out lockdown, there was an emphasis on what the new normal may look like. However normal is not a word often associated with Brighton & Hove. We are a city that is known for our digital economy, year-round events and as a home to free thinkers, artists, entrepreneurs, eccentrics and entertainers. We couldn’t do normal if we tried. The rebranding of the basketball court is the newest in a long list of activities that make up the Never Normal campaign by VisitBrighton. VisitBrighton have set up a Never Normal blog (www. visitbrighton.com/blog/nevernormalbrighton) to highlight some of the quirkiest activities. To get involved in the conversation on social media look for #NeverNormalBrighton.
A central theme is the way in which good design can help provide inclusive, accessible, sustainable and climate-resilient new development. This will help the city achieve its aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Your views will feed into the final version of the guidance, which will then be taken back to the committee for review. The aim is to adopt the new guidance in early 2021. You can find the consultation at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk. Comments can also be given by email to planningprojects@brighton-hove.gov.uk or in writing to: Draft UDF SPD Policy Projects and Heritage Team, Brighton & Hove City Council, First Floor Hove Town Hall, Norton Road BN3 3BQ. The closing date for comments is 11 December.

Planning applications and appeals The planning system can appear confusing and daunting. Mention the word ‘planning’ and it is often met with a roll of the eyes followed by a story that does not end well – normally a refusal notice, withdrawn application or a completed development that bears limited resemblance to the applicant’s initial dream.
At CMK Planning we aim to make your experience with the system as streamlined as possible. We provide our clients with a plain English, realistic professional opinion, whether you want to consider a new residential extension, explore maximising the development potential of your site, or
engage CMK Planning to appeal a refusal for your bespoke dream home. We are committed to assisting you with a clear and realistic way forward. On behalf of our clients, we have a proven track record in securing planning permissions and winning appeals and this has been consistently demonstrated in 2018, 2019 and 2020. If you would like to book an informal consultation with our director, Colm McKee MRTPI, please email info@cmkplanning.com We look forward to hearing from you.

Rightly or wrongly, ‘town planning’ has traditionally conjured up images of red tape, clipboards and site notices. The recent ‘relaxation’ of planning rules has not necessarily helped and, it appears, introduced some further confusion. Additional changes are on the horizon.

45 Local history from Kate Elms of The Keep archive centre…
A Christmas Tree at St Peter’s Nothing raises the festive spirits quite like an imposing Christmas tree set up in public for local people to enjoy. Combining tradition and decoration oan a grand scale with a sense of shared civic pride and celebration, towns and cities around the world have erected trees in prominent locations for decades.
Today, St Peter’s is known as the parish church of Brighton but it was built in the 1820s as a ‘chapel of ease’ to St Nicholas, the town’s ancient and original parish church. Brighton’s population had grown dramatically in the early 19th century, and people were being turned away from Sunday services due to overcrowding. Funds were made available for the creation of new churches, and the Brighton Vestry took advantage to ensure as many people as possible could benefit from public worship, and the religious and moral teaching that was thought to come with it. St Peter’s was designed by Charles Barry, then at the beginning of his career. He went on to design other prominent local buildings, including the original Sussex County Hospital, as well as the Reform Club in London and, perhaps most famously, the Houses of Parliament. But St Peter’s is often said to be his first acclaimed building and, according to many architectural historians, it helped to make his name. The Keep holds an extensive archive relating to St Peter’s, including registers

This photograph from The Keep’s archives was taken on Thursday 18 December 1952 by an unnamed Argus photographer. It shows an enormous tree positioned outside St Peter’s Church, in the centre of Brighton. A couple of brave men are tweaking the decorations – there are no signs of vertigo from the man at the top of the ladder – while the spectator standing nearby seems more interested in the photographer than the decoration of the tree.

of baptism and marriage dating back to the 19th century, minute books, parish magazines, and plans and images of the church, among them illustrations showing a spire that was part of the original design but never built. A star of the archive is the beautiful Second World War Book of Remembrance, which lists and commemorates the 968 servicemen, servicewomen and civilians from the parish who were killed between 1939 and 1945. The book was unveiled at St Peter’s in a special service in November 1952, just a few weeks before the Christmas tree in our picture was put in place. www.thekeep.info

The support we’ve received has been wonderful. However, with success came an unforeseen problem of getting too many boxes, filled with too many of the same things (more shower gel than Superdrug!). So, in the last few years, we’ve asked people to make financial donations too. This has enabled individual project workers to choose and buy a specific present for our residents. Our staff work closely with the young people living in our 24-hour supported accommodation, so get to know them well. A financial donation enables key workers to choose a specific present for each young person. It could be something to help them pursue a passion or hobby, or something they desperately need; a decent coat, warm jumper or new trainers.

51 An online Christmas concert ...
Brighton news…
Sussex Sings Brighton Centre Christmas plans to reopen Christmas is the time for the ever-popular Brighton Festival Chorus Christmas Concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. This year they are keeping the festive tradition alive with a joyful family concert brought directly to you in the comfort of your own home and they want to get all of Sussex singing. They are creating two virtual choirs to sing with them and are asking people to upload themselves singing Christmas favourites. They will magically put all the performances together to be streamed on 23rd December, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Music Director James Morgan said: “Alongside the usual sparklingly festive favourites performed by Juliette Pochin, our chorus, youth choir and the RPO, this year is a unique opportunity to celebrate Christmas by joining together in song online. We want as many people as possible to upload their versions of the carols we’ve chosen, so we can make the concert one that will live long in the memory!” Send your recordings via bfc.org.uk by Friday 4th December. The Brighton Centre is planning to reopen in December (if the latest Government restrictions permit) for a programme of socially distanced events, “A Venue Within a Venue”, where you are seated and served at private tables.
Jools Holland
Events will be strictly run to adhere to current social distancing guidelines. Thanks to receiving a grant from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund, the venue hopes to reopen with a brand new cabaret layout. Advanced anti-bacterial fogging machines will make sure that surfaces are protected for up to 30 days and air conditioning and heating systems use fresh air only. Face coverings need to be worn when you are not eating or drinking, unless you are exempt, and you can only attend events with members of your own household or support bubble. Planned socially distanced performances starting from 5 December include comedy from Russell Kane and Friends; Jules Holland; and tribute acts Absolute Bowie, The Bootleg Beatles and Forever Amy, featuring Amy Winehouse’s original band. The capacity for each show will be 504 seated fans. Please check brightoncentre.co.uk for the latest updates…

Plaque Unveiled New Comedians Handbook A plaque was unveiled at Whitehawk FC on 31st October to Private Charlie Standing, by Charlie’s great-grandson Elliott Hasler and Mayor Alan Robins.
The New Comedians Handbook by Brighton comedian Louise Stevenson has been published by Funny Bones Publishing.

Charlie was a fan of Whitehawk FC, who are celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. He grew up at 54 Lincoln Street, Hanover, and later lived nearby with his wife Tup in 21 Milner Flats. Charlie’s experiences in World War Two are the subject of a feature film by great-grandson Elliott. “WWII - The Long Road Home” was completed when Elliott was just 16 years old and premiered at the Brighton Fringe in 2017 under its original title “Charlie’s Letters”. Filmed on a micro-budget, it’s based on Charlie’s epic journey on the run through war-torn Italy as an escaped prisoner of war, with his wife and young son anxiously awaiting news back in Brighton.
The book is packed with content that has been successfully tried and tested by Louise, the CEO of Brighton Comedy Course, who has been performing stand-up since 1999 and has run comedy nights at The Hartington pub in Whippingham Road.
Elliott, now 20, is currently filming his second feature film, “Vindication Swim”, while also in his final year of a history degree at Exeter University. It’s another true story – this time about Mercedes Gleitze, a native Brightonian, who was the first British woman to swim the English Channel. Elliott plans to screen “Vindication Swim” during the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.
It’s the second book in the Learn Stand-up Comedy Series, which provides aspiring comedians with the tools and knowledge to do the job. The book covers everything a working comedian needs to know about the comedy circuit, with expert advice and practical exercises. It includes a chapter on the impact of Covid-19 on stand-up comedy and another on women in comedy.
“WWII – The Long Road Home” is now available from: Asda, Tesco and Morrisons, Sky Store, iTunes, Amazon and HMV (certificate: 15).
You can buy the book in paperback at brightonstandupcomedy.co.uk or on Kindle from Amazon.

54 Former TV executive producer Nick Powell has written his first children’s book…
Poppy Goes Wild For 20 years Nick Powell ran Ricochet, a Brighton-based TV company, making programmes such as Supernanny and Escape to River Cottage. He sold the company in 2013, allowing him time to pursue other interests, and he has now written his first illustrated children’s book, Poppy Goes Wild. What have you been doing post Ricochet? I have become involved with some fantastic ventures…including Snow Camp, a Hove based charity which uses snow sports to inspire change in young people trapped by inner city life…and a craft brewery called Ibex in the French Alps…a great excuse to go skiing and to drink plenty of beer. Tell us about Poppy Goes Wild… Poppy is a plucky, nature loving young girl on a mission to save her grandad’s farm by returning the countryside to how it was 50 years ago, when wild flower meadows flourished, otters raced and kingfishers swooped through the idyllic landscape. Poppy is unstoppable in her efforts to encourage long lost wildlife to return. Why did you decide to write about rewilding? I was born in the 60s, since when much of our wildlife has disappeared, largely due to pollution and the mass use of pesticides in farming. In a fun way, I wanted to engage readers in the 5-9 age range with the magic of nature on their doorstep, and for them to learn how they can help to return wildlife and to safeguard its future.
What do you think we should be doing in the city to encourage rewilding? I would love every park and green space to have a rewilding area and for every school to plant a wild flower patch and install a pond. And if we all cast wild flower seeds in our gardens and window boxes, the city would be humming to the wonder of more birds, bees, butterflies and dragonflies than we could have imagined.

Where is your favourite local spot to enjoy nature? Anywhere on the South Downs, and anywhere where I can find a wild flower, so that’s plenty of local spots. I love to go mountain biking from Ditchling Beacon, stopping to watch skylarks soaring and kestrels hovering, before moving on to the gorgeous wild flower meadows of Malling Down. 59 Brighton Open Air Theatre in Dyke Road Park are hoping that their Christmas season can go ahead...
BOAT Christmas Season For the first time ever, BOAT is producing in-house not one, but two Christmas productions, in rep. These outdoor, socially-distanced and Covid-compliant shows last one hour each and play for two and a half weeks leading up to Christmas.
BOAT’s modern adaptation of “The Snow Queen” is a perfect family Christmas adventure - funny, magic and full of surprises. Greta’s brother, Kay, has been acting strange. He’s mean and moody and won’t play games. The Snow Queen must have snatched him and left an imposter in his place! With her new friend, the wise-cracking, fame-hungry talking Crow to guide her, Greta must set out across the snow to search for her brother in the Snow Queen’s palace and bring him home in time for Christmas. 8-24 December, 5pm (2pm Sundays); £12 (children £8) “Hansel and Gretel?” is a postmodern pantomime. Bill and Toni have just met and fallen head-over-heels for each other. Problem is, they’ve met on stage, and Bill’s been plucked from the audience to play Hansel … with Toni playing her sister Gretel. This is the least of enigmatic director Mal Sixsmith’s troubles, as Simon the Dame
GENERAL
BOAT encourages visitors to wrap up warm, bring blankets, umbrellas and something dry to sit on, and treat yourself to a mulled wine at the bar before settling down to enjoy the show. These may very well be the only Christmas shows in Brighton this year, so whether it’s a gorgeously re-told classic fairy-tale, or a musical deconstruction of the traditional pantomime, there’s something for you at BOAT this Christmas.
demands his role be expanded beyond its paltry 14 pages. Featuring musical numbers from Cardi B to Kate Bush, “Hansel And Gretel?” asks the important questions: what is postmodernism? What is pantomime? Is this really a kid’s show, or just a load of pretentious twaddle? Honestly? Probably, yes. But there is a rapping dragon, so it’s worth coming just for that. 8-24 December, 7.30pm (4.30pm Sundays); £15 (children £10); age 8+ You can book tickets at www.brightonopenairtheatre.co.uk or call TicketSource on 0333 666 4466.
