One of the things we hope to see happening this year is the local community groups who weren’t able to meet for most of 2020 start to open again and with it local people once more get to interact and meet socially without restriction. With that in mind we ask you to please let us know as your groups open up again throughout 2021. We can help by reminding the wider community what your group is all about, where and when you meet and whether you are inviting new people to join.

4 News from Green councillor Leo Littman…

Councillor News for Preston Park ward Happy New Year, 2021! As we all know, 2020 was an extraordinary year. Unfamiliar experiences became commonplace, while many familiar activities disappeared. velodrome grandstand in Preston Park. Besides breaking rules for lockdown and the Tiers system, some of these young people have been putting themselves at risk by climbing on the high wall overlooking the tennis club. City Parks and the police are aware and dealing with the situation. • There have also been very disturbing reports of criminal incidents in Springfield Road, including acts of violence towards residents. Caroline Lucas MP called an online meeting at the beginning of December with residents, police, and Councillors to discuss a united approach to dealing with these sorts of incidents. On a happier note, Springfield Road is also finally about to see the replacement of one of the magnificent trees it has lost in recent years. The tree-pit has been dug, and the arboriculturists are awaiting the arrival of the tree for planting. Cllr Leo Littman Leo.Littman@brighton-hove.gov.uk

March 2020 seems so long ago. It was then though, that the three of us who represent Preston Park ward on Brighton & Hove City Council held our first ward surgery. Within a week, the first lockdown began. Since then, we’ve all become adept at using online platforms for meetings, and, hopefully, our second ward surgery will have been held in mid-December via Microsoft Teams. We’re planning for there to be more surgery (virtual or face-toface) in 2021, where residents can raise concerns and ask questions. Please see our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/PrestonParkGreens) and any newsletters for details. Turning to recent events in the ward; following on from Cllr Heley’s piece on crime in the November edition, the process of creating a Preston Park ward Local Action Team is ongoing. There’s certainly enough enthusiasm in the ward for a body to help liaise between residents, the police, and the Council on matters of public safety, crime, and antisocial behaviour. Sadly, it looks like it’ll have plenty to do. • There have been renewed concerns about road safety around the Preston Drove area. The Council and the police are looking into ways of promoting public safety in the face of increasing reports of dangerous driving. • Since the Summer, when criminal and antisocial behaviour spiked in our two parks, increased police patrols and the colder weather seem to have deterred some of it. However, there are still groups of youths congregating at the

North Laine news…

If you need to contact your local councillors...

Frederick Gardens gate request

North Laine Councillors

In response to a petition from residents of Frederick Gardens for a gate, Brighton & Hove City Council will introduce signage improvements to reduce the use of the twitten as a through route.

The ward councillors for St Peter’s and North Laine are Lizzie Deane, Sue Shanks and Pete West. They all represent the Green Party. You can contact them as follows: Lizzie Deane: lizzie.deane@brighton-hove.gov.uk Tel: 01273 291138

A council report to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee said that there are many twittens in the city that form a network of walking routes and closing them would discourage walking and cycling. However, the report said there were some users who should be discouraged from using the twitten and that this could be helped by improved signage. The council said that an unlocked gate would be an obstruction to the right of way and couldn’t be granted without thorough consultation. They will instead be consulting with residents on what signing could be installed.

17 Councillor Elaine Hills on how a liveable neighbourhood can improve the streets of Hanover…

Liveable Hanover

It’s extremely worrying that Hanover, which is home to so many young families, has poorer-than-average air quality. A liveable neighbourhood will help clean our air and make our streets safer. The reduction in traffic makes walking and cycling easier and safer for those living within the area, and the streets become much more accessible to those in wheelchairs, the visually impaired and to people transporting small children on foot. There are many other benefits too: quieter, cleaner streets, more green and social spaces, and streets that are safe enough for children to play in. But while active travel is encouraged in a liveable neighbourhood, people will still be able to drive. Delivery and emergency vehicles will still have access, and residents and their visitors will still be able to park their cars as before.

Chalk versions of the Liveable Hanover logo have been appearing all over Hanover

HANOVER

Brighton and Hove’s first low traffic neighbourhood scheme is soon to be piloted in Hanover and we want residents to be at the heart of its design. The main aim is to stop traffic from outside the area from using our narrow streets as a cut-through, making our roads more dangerous and polluting our air.

The Choir with No Name runs choirs for people who have experienced homelessness and marginalisation. The Brighton choir was set up in partnership with Brighton Housing Trust and started in August 2018. It began with two people, now we have over 50 members. We were founded on the premise that singing makes you feel good and helps you to build confidence, skills and genuine, long-lasting friendships.

Petition for crossing on Freshfield Road... Queen’s Park Councillor Nick Childs submitted a petition to the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 24th November calling for a new crossing and traffic calming for Freshfield Road. The petition, signed by 343 people, requested a pedestrian crossing at the junction of Freshfield Road and Queen’s Park Terrace as well as permanent traffic calming measures. It said: “Residents have campaigned for a crossing at this busy point of the road for many years. Scores of children and parents using St Luke’s Primary School have to cross the road daily and risk vehicles speeding down the hill. Vehicles speed down the hill regularly, leading to real risks of harm to pedestrians including users of three schools. Current council procedures mean until there is a serious accident no action can be taken. We believe this is nonsensical and fails to take account of near misses, minor incidents and unreported risks.”

The Future of Volk’s Railway Brighton & Hove City Council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture (TECC) Committee approved a motion at their meeting on 19th November to thank the Volk’s Electric Railway Association (VERA) for its proposal document, “An Accessible Future for Volk’s Electric Railway”, and to call for an officer report exploring how its proposals could be considered alongside existing planned works at Black Rock and Madeira Terraces and to explore options for external funding.

KEMPTOWN

The Volk’s Electric Railway was built in 1833 and is owned and operated by Brighton & Hove City Council. The report makes a case for extending the railway towards the proposed Black Rock development. The current Black Rock Station, owned by Southern Water, is also a venting and pumping station for the Storm Water Collection drain. VERA say the station is not fit for purpose and the drains emit a highly toxic combination of gases, causing a very unpleasant smell. Cllr Robert Nemeth, Conservative Group Spokesperson on the TECC Committee, who proposed the motion, said: “The railway is one of the city’s most loved tourist attractions but it’s suffering from a handful of easily remedied ailments, some expensive, some cheap, but all within a package that could deliver overall payback of investment within six years.” He said the issues as laid out in the report divided into five areas: bad signage, especially by the Palace Pier; a missing second platform at the start of the railway; the lack of a fully accessible railcar; a lack of the most basic of shelters at Halfway Station; and a curious final destination at the east end of the line. The solutions, he said, would be to install decent signage; let the Association get on with the second platform; investigate the purchase of a new railcar; buy a basic shelter; and extend the line. Plans for a pay-as-you-feel café As a result, they rapidly established a food hub, using their volunteers and their established partnership with the Real Junk Food Project, who provide hot meals, as well as support from the Brighton and Hove Food Partnership, Fareshare Sussex, Sussex Gleaning Network, Brighton Food Factory and Brighton & Hove City Council. Since table tennis limited play resumed, the hub now uses the parish hall of St John the Baptist’s Church next door to the club three days a week.

BTTC Co-Founder Wen Wei Xu serving in the Real Junk Food Project Community Café

A newly established Fitzherbert Community Hub (FCH) has been created comprising BTTC with neighbours the Real Junk Food Project Brighton, St John the Baptist Church and Voices in Exile, and there are plans in progress for the FCH to renovate the parish hall and some space around the church to create a pay-as-you-feel café to serve the whole community all day, every day, and a beautiful courtyard, complete with a table tennis table. Tim Holtam of BTTC told us more…

nity down the linked corridor to play a bit of ping pong in the club, or on the outside tables. It is a unique opportunity for great pay-as-you-feel meals created from surplus food in the same space as the most easily accessed fun sport for all ages. All this, combined with companionship and a warm welcome, aims to enable people to feel a sense of belonging and well-being in their community.

Have you seen a big demand for your food hub meals?

Although we are not actively recruiting for volunteers currently, we welcome interest and for people to keep in touch as we develop. Donations are always welcome, but it’s worth checking product suitability first. We accept financial contributions of course, and like to promote the pay forward concept, where people buy a meal plus one for someone else who may not easily be able to afford a meal.

There is an ever-increasing demand for the meals. Numbers have grown throughout this difficult period. How will the new café work? It will work as a regular café but with a focus on social interaction, refreshment and activity for everyone. There will be tables for communal eating for lunch and for gathering to meet old friends and make new ones. It can be a venue for meetings and events. Barista coffee will be available all day with other drinks and snacks and of course there will always be the opportu-

Do you need any more volunteers or donations?

When do you think it might be up and running? There is a big refurbishment ahead, so it’s safer to say Christmas 2021. Hopefully before.

36 We catch up with one of Brighton & Hove Albion’s former players…

Meet Adam Virgo Adam Virgo played football for Brighton & Hove Albion from 2000-2005 and then again from 2008-10, with a spell at Celtic in between. Since he retired as a footballer he has worked as a TV pundit and co-commentator for channels including BT Sport, Sky, Eurosport and Channel 5, and he also runs his own football academy, the Adam Virgo Academy, in Brighton and Sussex. What was the highlight of your career with the Albion? Making my debut is my favourite highlight. This may surprise many as people will remember me for my goal against Swindon and my goal against Ipswich to keep us in the Championship. Another highlight is playing at the Millennium Stadium in the League One play-off final. The reason I picked my debut is because it was always my dream to become a professional footballer and it’s a reward for the sacrifices and hard work to get to that point. It was a goal I set myself from the age of five. The experience of playing for your hometown club and the experience of playing a competitive professional game for the first time is one I will never forget. Who was the best player you played against? When I played Ipswich earlier in my career, I played against a young Darren Bent who went on to play for Tottenham and scored over 100 Premier League goals. Even at that young age his movement and his thinking of where to be in the 18-yard box was something you could clearly see he would go onto a successful career. We played Tottenham in the FA Cup and I played against Robbie Keane.

His movement was exceptional, he never stopped running and he had this mindset of always knowing what was going to happen before everyone else did. Are you still in touch with any of your old team-mates? When you move from club to club you do build friendships with players but once they move on it’s difficult to keep in touch with everyone. You will find with most footballers that they may keep in touch with one or two good friends from their playing days (as I have done), but fortunately in my job travelling the country with my media work I always say hi and have a catch-up with ex-players, for example Steve Cook at Bournemouth who I catch up with regularly when I cover Bournemouth. He was kind enough to pass on a signed shirt for my son! What do you think of the current Brighton team? I think Graham is assembling a very good squad of players to be competitive in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed watching his style of play as I felt this needed to

37 players aged 13-18 are kept in the academy system longer. Tell us more about the academy… We will soon be approaching our third birthday and as a family run business we are extremely proud of what we have achieved so far. Aimed at girls and boys of any ability, the academy offers weekly training sessions during the term and 5-star rated football camps during the holidays. Players are coached by our FA qualified and UEFA coaches. I also offer personal, high quality 1-2-1 coaching sessions for all ages and abilities for anyone looking to improve their technique, skills and ability on the ball.

I hope to build players’ confidence (whether they want to play professionally or just for the enjoyment of the game) but change even though Chris Hughton did if we do produce a professional footballer, a brilliant job. Christmas Tree Recycling

Warm homes support

Brighton & Hove City Council has teamed up with local children’s hospice Chestnut Tree House and Just Helping for a Christmas tree recycling scheme.

Many more people are likely to be struggling to pay their fuel bills and keep their homes warm this year.

Most city residents can get their tree collected in return for a donation to the children’s hospice. To get involved, sign up through Just Helping (just-helping.org. uk/register-tree/) before Wednesday 6 January 2021. Once you’ve signed up and made a donation, volunteers will collect the Christmas tree from your home in a COVID-secure way between 9th and 12th January. The trees will then be taken to a tree recycling plant in Sussex. Please do not leave trees on the street to be collected as this is fly-tipping. Trees must be kept inside your home or garden until collection takes place. Residents can also email xmastree@chestnut-tree-house.org.uk or call 01903 871820 for more information. The council still has its 23 Christmas tree drop-off points as usual (open until 11 January), but they are hoping residents will support this lovely fundraising initiative. Trees can also be taken to a Household Waste Recycling Site or, if they fit, placed in your brown garden bin if you have signed up to a garden waste collection.

Heating your home to at least 18°C is important for your health, especially if you have reduced mobility, are 65 or over, or have a long-term heart or lung condition, diabetes or are pregnant. If you need support to keep your home warm and your energy bills low, the free energy and money-saving advice service, LEAP (Local Energy Advice Partnership), can help. Their advisor could help you: find a cheaper energy deal; fit free energy-saving kit such as lightbulbs or draught-proofing; check if you’re eligible for insulation or even a new boiler. Book a free energy advice call online at applyforleap.org.uk or call free on 0800 060 7567 (8.45am–7pm, Monday to Friday, or 9am–12 noon, Saturday). The service is available to home-owners, private renters and social housing tenants who have a low income, or receive tax credits, or receive housing benefit or an income or disability-related benefit, or who have a long-term illness or disability.

News from the council…

40 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Brighton Hippodrome Middle Street in Brighton’s Lanes is at the centre of the city, but it’s a sad place. It’s depressing to walk past the long, graffitied frontage of Brighton Hippodrome and hard to believe that for many years in the mid-twentieth century, this building was the top venue outside London.

There were two shows each evening (6.15 and 8.30pm) in an auditorium which could seat over two thousand. Inside were chandeliers, plush velvet, mirrors and gold leaf and in these luxurious surroundings the audience enjoyed what they loved best, variety and music hall. In April 1933 the programme featured the Siamese twins from Brighton, Daisy and Violet Hilton, Clifford and Rhode, comedians, Leslie Strange the caricaturist, Bux and Bux the roller skaters, Donald Stuart, juggler, the Ristoris, comedians and the Kirks, trick

cyclists. It would have been a whirlwind of an evening! This photograph from the Argus archive shows members of the Crazy Gang outside the Hippodrome in August 1935 (ARG/9/7). They’re posing for a publicity shot for that month’s pre-London show, ‘Round About Regent Street’. The Crazy Gang were essentially three double acts, plus comedian Eddie Gray, who had been brought together by impresario George Black for a show at the London Palladium in 1931. Teddy Knox (dressed as ‘Prince

The early 1960s saw Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Cliff Richard, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones performing at the Hippodrome The early 1960s saw Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Cliff Richard, The Beatles and the Rolling Stones performing at the Hippodrome but by 1972 the building had become a bingo hall. In 1999 Mecca Social Clubs celebrated the 99th birthday of the Hippodrome by inviting the comedian Jimmy Cricket to perform. Doors opened for bingo at 4pm and the comedy started at 8.30pm. The Hippodrome has been an ice rink, circus, theatre, cinema and bingo hall. Whatever eventually happens to the building, at least the evidence for all the Hippodrome’s reincarnations – in the form of programmes (1901-1964), building plans, newspapers and personal letters and diaries – is safely held at The Keep. www.thekeep/info

Charlie Naughton and Jimmy Gold, in white shirts, are ‘two working men’. In 1931 all these performers were already household names. As the ‘Gang’ they combined slapstick, mime, song, jokes, high wire and juggling with lots of flour, soot and custard pies. Not much was off limits. Race, gender and sexual orientation were all targets, as was ‘high’ culture of ballet and opera.

43 Fantastic local charity Time To Talk Befriending are in need of volunteers…

Time To Talk Befriending Although the telephone cannot replace face to face human interaction which most of us crave and need, it has been quite literally a lifeline for many during the pandemic.

The beneficiaries of our service are people mostly in their 80+ years, and who have a rich life history to share, yet many feel hidden behind the four walls of their homes which is why befriending is such a lifeline. Barriers relating to age are broken down as we connect volunteers spanning across the generations, which proves time and again to be mutually rewarding. We only have to read the reviews to know that volunteers get a lot out of the 30-45 minutes a week they give to befriending. But don’t take our word for it! Here are a few quotes from volunteers who share what befriending means to them:

“To hear the happiness in her voice after having a conversation and talking about her life makes me feel proud to be part of the charity.” Nicola. “It’s an opportunity to give something back to the community.” Jos. “It’s really interesting...hearing different perspectives and sharing common interests.” Paul. “An amazing, rewarding and beautiful experience...our time together is precious. The whole journey since joining the charity has been wonderful. I would recommend it to everyone!” Claire. Could you help make a difference? Even if you cannot commit to once a week, a fortnightly call can mean a lot to someone who is experiencing loneliness. Visit our website to find out more: www.tttb.org.uk/volunteers. Emily Kenward

“A special supportive friendship...we have a good laugh and learn so much from each other.” Maxine.

GENERAL

It is amazing to witness the dual benefits of befriending once we have connected two like-minded people together. As a result, we’ve heard many older people say how they ‘want to live again’ and that they now have ‘purpose and no longer feel invisible’ which is a far cry from ‘not wanting to be here anymore’, something we sadly hear far too often.

As a charity we are motivated to provide support for people in their senior years, helping to create a sense of belonging through personalised befriending interventions. So, whilst befriending currently continues to be mostly over the phone or through postal contact, thanks to the wonderful kindness of community volunteers we have been fortunate to see large numbers of new and existing be-friendships blossom.

47 Care providers Home Instead share the local memories of one of their clients…

Memories of Brighton Past At Home Instead Brighton, Hove & Shoreham, our CAREGivers provide companionship and spend quality time with the elderly in our community. Often our clients tell us interesting stories from Brighton past…

We thought we would share some from our client Jean Novis (93) who has lived in Brighton all her life and experienced World War II as a young girl. Jean was at the intermediate school on London Road, York Place, when the war first started. She remembers preparation sirens going off, so residents were ready for the real ones. Jean would say goodbye to her father on the platform at Brighton station. She laughs, “The train would start moving and I would run along the platform holding his hand through the window and I would say ‘I’m running out of platform!’. It was funny but very sad at the time as I didn’t know if I’d ever see him again.” After the war began, Jean’s school was bombed, and two teachers were killed. She was never evacuated as she didn’t want to leave her mother at home, but Brighton was a dangerous place to be living. Bombs would be dropped off along the coast rather than be taken back overseas. Jean remembers when they hit the gasholder at Black Rock, sending huge

Brighton ice rink in West Street

flames more than 300 feet into the sky, and Western Road was hit tremendously. Jean remembers having ration cards. Due to the lack of food and necessities they had to eat what they could...one lady even used to sell horse meat in Kensington Gardens! However, Jean still has fond memories of the ice rink in the war, which was once along West Street (now the Odeon). It was the only ice rink along the south coast at the time. The allied troops from Canada and America who were in Brighton would visit the ice rink and hold hands with the children and women, guiding them round. Everyone found it very sad when they all had to go home to their own countries. The day the war ended people were out on the streets of the city dancing and singing - there was a blackout, but everyone was happy! 49 Daren Kay on two Brighton projects celebrating diversity…

Celebrating two centuries of queer history Despite being the UK’s queerest city, celebrating our reputation for diversity and acceptance proved challenging in a year that saw Pride cancelled and clubs and bars closed.

Yet even these have been tainted by our experience of COVID-19 says Community Curator, Daren Kay. Considering the way that the pandemic resulted in a temporary censure of so many freedoms held dear by the LGBTiQ+ community in our city, it’s ironic that the over-riding theme of both projects is censorship; of lives that, until recently, were lived at best in secret, at worst in persecution. One of the most moving items in the exhibition, for instance, is a copy of the indictment of 19-year-old John Spershott – the last man to be hanged for buggery in Sussex in 1835. On the walking tour too, there are several examples of prejudice – perhaps the most bizarre being the account of a young lesbian trying to buy trousers in one of the town’s department stores. Yet there are also stories of protest and pride. From the photo of the Sussex branch of the Gay Liberation Front outside the War Memorial in the Old Steine in 1973, commemorating gay servicemen and women, to the actual banner held by anti-Clause 28 protesters on a march through the city in 1987; the exhibition is a celebration of how

50 News of a collaboration between two local businesses and the YMCA…

Curry Love for the YMCA As was true for many small self-employed businesses, 2020 has been a challenging year for Brighton-based mobile street-food vendors Curry Love, a partnership between Will Day and Carol Nicholson who started up in 2017. With these challenges have come opportunities, and an incentive to re-evaluate the role small businesses play in the community. Over both lockdowns, Curry Love went into partnership with Grissino, a local artisan bakery, to raise the profile and maintain the momentum of both businesses; more recently Curry Love have developed this partnership to begin a collaboration with the local YMCA sheltered housing scheme on Lewes Road, initially to provide food donations, but with a view in the new year to work more closely with the residents. Previously I have worked in Brighton as a special needs school-teacher, and through that connection I know the current manager of the YMCA accommodation on Lewes Road. Carol and I suggested that some of the food from our recent fortnightly takeaways could be ring-fenced for donation: we made our first delivery at the beginning of this month. The lockdowns have been particularly hard on people living alone with a higher level of need. Do you plan to continue your association with the YMCA long-term? Yes. The house manager rightly pointed out that an on-going partnership with the YMCA and interpersonal engagement with the residents would be of far greater benefit long-term than simple food drop-offs. I have a background working with vulnerable individuals and Curry Love would like to share some of our practical skills and passion for food with YMCA residents to promote their independence. We will see where it goes in 2021. For more information, see currylove.co.uk or Instagram @therealcurrylove; email info@currylove.co.uk or

53 News from the council of a new film to improve road safety among young drivers…

Keep your Mind in Gear Road safety in young drivers is not good and Brighton & Hove City Council and the NHS decided to see if a short film could help by introducing mindfulness in a simple film. Keep your Mind in Gear is a short film produced as a partnership between the Road Safety Department of Brighton & Hove City Council and Sussex Mindfulness Centre.

• Failure to look properly/emotional/ physical distraction is the largest collision factor for young drivers in Sussex and nationwide. • Research suggests that mindful driving can improve driver awareness and increase driver safety. We produced a film to be shown to young people, within driver awareness courses and within schools and colleges, to get the message across to young people to be less distracted when behind the wheel. The aim is to introduce mindfulness to drivers in order to give them a tool to ensure that they are able to fully engage with the road environment when they are driving. Key issues covered in the film are distraction – mobile phone/passenger/music/emotional (remembering an

argument with partner) – and also road awareness such as approaching a junction/responses to traffic and pedestrians. We called in lots of favours and relied on goodwill from people willing to help us make this public service film: the voiceover from Jon Briggs, original voice of Siri and the Weakest Link, combined with local actors and music from Nxrth Road, a Brighton music producer. The film can be viewed at: https://vimeo. com/466120176 For more information, please see: https:// sussexmindfulnesscentre.nhs.uk/practice-and-governance/ mindfulness-for-drivers/ or www.mindingear4roadsafety.com

Make Change Count This year hundreds of vulnerable people were brought in from the streets where they were rough sleeping to be given shelter during the pandemic. Organisations across the city continue to work with people to help them find a permanent solution to their homelessness. The city’s Make Change Count campaign, which links local organisations, urgently needs your support to help people this

winter, with fundraising activities hit by the pandemic and donations lower than in previous years. It’s easy to donate online at: justgiving. com/campaign/MakeChangeCount2020

55 A new local business…

Kingsway Care Olly Carter of new local care provider Kingsway Care tells us more about the business… People look forward to retirement, and time for friends and leisure. But it can also bring worries about health, finances, housing and – inevitably - care. It’s something we all need to think about. If you own your home, or have more than £23,250, you are expected to arrange your own care. I learned from caring for my great-aunt that this can be challenging. Not everyone has family to rely on and many become isolated. Senior people have a lot to offer the community and I feel they deserve better choices. Who are Kingsway Care? I started Kingsway Care with Chris Lucas, a qualified registered Care Manager who loves helping clients and their families set up personalised care plans. We have recruited an amazing team of skilled caregivers and companions. They feel valued and motivated, meaning clients benefit from higher standards. We are ethical employers and committed to the Disability Confident and Brighton Living Wage schemes.

How do you use technology? Specialist software makes staff rotas, schedules and client communication efficient - meaning there is more time to spend with clients. We also help many of our clients set up new home technology to support safety and wellbeing, like fitness trackers and personal alarms, or devices to control lighting, heating and entertainment.

City wins gold award

Consultation on sports facilities

Brighton & Hove has become the first in the UK to win a Gold Sustainable Food Places Award from Sustainable Food Places.

Residents in Brighton & Hove are being asked to contribute to an exciting plan to improve and develop council sports facilities across the city.

The award recognises the city’s outstanding achievements on a range of key food issues and most recently on tackling food poverty during the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s testament to a number of city-wide food projects, businesses, community and voluntary groups, individuals and departments of the local authority striving to enshrine sustainable practices. The coordination of projects within the city has led to Brighton & Hove being a hive of sustainability and good food work, with good results in childhood obesity and the tripling of community gardens in the past five years. The bid, that was coordinated by the Brighton & Hove Food Partnership, was originally supposed to be submitted in Spring 2020 but was pushed back due to the response to the pandemic, as both the Food Partnership and Brighton & Hove City Council were involved in the Emergency Food Network, that became the vehicle for an astonishing citywide emergency food response to the pandemic lockdown.

Travel to

Brighton & Hove City Council are currently developing a Sports Facilities Investment Plan to provide good quality, accessible, sustainable facilities and services into the future. The plan aims to encourage increased participation in sport and physical activity and improve the health and wellbeing of residents across the city. Sports facilities buildings in Brighton & Hove are well used by residents and provide a range of leisure opportunities for all ages. However, most are showing their age - the most recent ‘new’ leisure centre in the city was built nearly 30 years ago! These older buildings are inefficient, expensive to run and maintain, and often fail to meet modern demand. The council has launched a consultation to find out how residents think sports facilities could be improved and developed. Residents filling in the survey have the chance to win a £25 Love2Shop voucher. You can find it at: https:// consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/health/brighton-hove-sports-facilities-investment-plan/ The consultation runs until 17 January 2021.

A new online app service aims to collect 10,000 unwanted electrical items and provide at least 500 reused electricals to residents within the first year of operation. City residents now have a free and easy way to dispose of unwanted electrical items like laptops, mobile phones and small appliances while helping charities and the environment.

A new service – the first of its kind in the country – has been set up in Brighton & Hove A new service – the first of its kind in the country – has been set up in Brighton & Hove where people can book online through a special app and have their items collected from their doorstep. Goods that are working or can be refurbished will be donated to charity. Anything that can’t be saved will be recycled responsibly. Importantly, people can be reassured that any items with personal information stored on them will have the data completely wiped by professional security experts.

Dispose of batteries responsibly The council are calling on residents and businesses to dispose of old, unwanted or dead batteries responsibly. Batteries that are thrown into ordinary bins, household waste or mixed with other recycling are extremely dangerous as they can explode and cause fires. Instead, old, unwanted and dead batteries should be taken to Household Waste Recycling Sites (off Wilson Road in Brighton and off Old Shoreham Road in Hove) or dropped off at one of the many battery recycling points throughout the city, including many local supermarkets. The council doesn’t collect batteries, so you can find your nearest recycling location at recyclenow.com by entering your postcode, town or city.
