Blakers Park Tree Project After an amazing response from our local Fiveways community we are delighted to announce that we have hit our fundraising target for 50 new trees by 2025 - that’s within just 12 months of starting the campaign! We have already planted 13 trees that’s three sweetgums, three oaks, two juneberries, two cherries, hawthorn, a rowan and a pear. The remaining 37 are paid for or pledged. Our volunteers are ensuring the health of new trees by watering them weekly during the summer for these first two years. In September we will be ordering more trees from specialist suppliers Hillier Trees so that next winter we can begin planting once more. Special thanks to... all of our tree sponsors, volunteers, Park Ranger Emma and her colleagues for helping to get trees in the ground and to our friends at The Cleveland Arms for use of their outside tap to keep our trees well watered in the summer months. So...what’s next? Now that we are winding down our Tree Project fundraising, we want to keep up the momentum. Later this year we will launch fundraising for new green projects in Blakers to keep up community connection with enhancing our special little park. Before we consult with the Council’s Cityparks team we would love to hear from you about what you would like to see. It could be moss walls (with the aircleaning capability of over 200 regular trees), new playground features, community gardening... the list goes on.

Plans rejected for phone mast opposite school An application to the council by Vodafone to build a 20 metre-high mobile phone mast on land at the junction of Upper Hollingdean Road and Ditchling Road (opposite Downs Junior School) has been turned down by Brighton & Hove City Council after more than 300 objections, including one from local MP Caroline Lucas. Vodafone wanted the mast to upgrade their coverage in the area, particularly in relation to providing new 5G services to increase data speeds. Local residents were concerned about the proximity of the proposed mast to Downs Junior and Infant Schools and the adverse effect it would have on the conservation area. One said: “As a local resident I strongly object to a phone mast with potentially serious detrimental effects on health being placed near two primary schools.” Caroline Lucas said that a number of her constituents had written to her about the application and she was concerned about the proximity of the mast to nearby schools. As well as being opposite the Grade II listed Downs Junior School, the site is directly adjacent to a locally listed tram shelter, dating from the early 20th century, and Brighton & Hove City Council’s Heritage Team recommended refusal of the application. The council refused permission for the mast as it would appear overly visually prominent and, along with its associated cabinetry, would create undue visual clutter, causing harm to the character and appearance of the streetscene. They said it would also have an overbearing impact on residents of a nearby house and would potentially cause an increased safety risk to pedestrians. The planning officer concluded in his re-

port: “The proposal is considered to cause some considerable harm to the visual amenity of the local streetscene, which itself is the setting for multiple heritage assets. The mast would cause harm to the historical significance of the grade II listed Downs Junior School, the Preston Park conservation area, and a locally listed tram shelter. It would also dominate the dwellinghouse Hollingside, and appear overbearing to residents therein. “The mast in particular would have a poor relationship with the character of the streetscene, and although the benefits of a 5G network are acknowledged, it is not considered that it would outweigh the harm that has been identified in this instance.”

Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods We were very disappointed to have had to cancel our work sessions and our speaker for our AGM, but we, like everyone else, had to abide by the government measures to curb the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic. However the upside of all this has been a significant reduction in pollution and many more people able to get out and discover their local green spaces. The weather this spring has been glorious and the blossom of the blackthorn and hawthorn in the woods has been spectacular. The woodland spring flowers have all done well after the wet winter and subsequent warmth, and in the hazel coppice the wood anemones are now establishing well. The cowslips which escaped from the confines of the covered reservoir site onto the adjacent meadow are advancing across it towards the chalk butterfly and insect banks. These banks also had a fantastic show of cowslips, which were sown by our rangers, and hopefully these will spread south towards the ones from the reservoir and in time cover the entire meadow. The pink sainfoin are now in flower on the chalk banks as well as the oxeye daisies, although these are spreading a little too much to the detriment of some of the lower growing species, but in the meadow it is welcome and looking pretty amongst the purple knapweed which is now coming into flower. Since the late summer downland cut was introduced the number of species is rising year on year with red and white clovers, yellow cats-ear, rough hawkbit, yarrow, and on the edges ladyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bedstraw.

There have been instances of people lighting fires, leaving their empty beer cans behind, digging into the soil disturbing the roots of our veteran trees and moving our insect log piles to create ramps for mountain bikers. The ground flora of the woods is sparse at the best of times but now there are areas which are completely denuded of vegetation. When we are allowed to resume our work sessions there will be a lot of repair work to do. Please enjoy the woods but bear in mind their fragility. How has Arka Funerals been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic? We were all quite scared initially not knowing what this would mean for the community of Brighton & Hove as well as the wider picture. We of course had to bring in restrictions, and the wearing of PPE which does not come naturally to us. It was stressful keeping up with the changing regulations from government and crematoria, and then communicating those changes to families for whom plans had to keep being amended. Were you much busier than usual during the spring? Initially we were but things calmed down quickly. How did the families cope during lockdown with so few mourners allowed at funerals? It has been so difficult having to restrict numbers at funeral ceremonies, especially at the beginning of lockdown when numbers were restricted so severely. Families and friendship groups have found creative ways of involving more people to be involved. On the positive side there have been some very person-centred creative ceremonies that have allowed people to mark the death privately and beautifully. How have you altered your working practices? Right at the beginning, even before lockdown we decided to reduce our fees by 10% to reflect the limitations on funerals at this time. We hope this has been helpful. There was a short period of time where we

were not able to support viewings within our chapel of rest, but we can again now. We have found ways to flexibly work within the restrictions whilst protecting both families and ourselves. I like to think I am supported at Arka by the most incredible team. Do you think much is likely to change over the next few months? I would hope that as restrictions loosen and the community becomes more comfortable with current guidelines, the number of attendees at funerals will increase, that families will again be able to have more involvement with their dead. I so hope that the number of COVID deaths continues to reduce and that people who have been on waiting lists for ongoing treatment will be able to be access services. The pandemic has brought with it a rallying cry: our world needs change. With the world in lockdown, people quickly noticed that the air was the cleanest it had been in 100 years. People want a greener world and see that it is possible. But this past week (at the time of writing in mid-June) has also witnessed a worldwide cry to the horrific death of George Floyd at the hands of police in America, and with it the message that racism is still alive here in the UK, despite the 2010 Equality Act - and within the institutions that we all rely on: the police, education, and health. Brighton’s Labour and Green groups immediately responded with a message of solidarity to the city’s BAME (Black and Minority Ethnic) community, stating “that we in the UK are not immune to institutional racism in our justice system”. The city council has also pledged to review all statues, monuments and street names to ensure that they “reflect our city’s values”. I will also be asking a question at the upcoming committee that deals with equality issues, about the Global HPO review that investigated BAME staff experiences. They previously detailed racism taking place within the council, and we now need an urgent update on how this is being addressed. The world is standing up to racism, and we must respond by stamping out unconscious racism in our council, and ourselves. Ward news: Greens have been pushing for a recovery that will be good for our planet and people. We welcomed recent government guidance to help us respond to the pandemic. We have been making the argument that we need to have more space for safe walking, public transport, cycling, queueing and for small businesses to recover. Council officers have been examining how this can all be done at breakneck speed as the government have given the council a chunk of money, which must be spent by the start of July 2020. Emergency measures will be put in place in four weeks, and if the grant is given, will be completed in eight weeks. Then a bigger pot of money will be given to the council to make these changes more permanent. Because of the tight timeframe, only stakeholders and councillors have been involved so far in the plans. Hanover Actionâ&#x20AC;Ś a time to reflect on our lives The pandemic has been a very painful time for many people, the loss of loved ones, unable to see close family even when they are ill, the loss of jobs and the prospect of future economic hardship. However many of the forced changes in our lifestyle have chimed with the kind of changes many of us involved in Hanover Action would like to see in our community. A real increase in neighbourliness, WhatsApp groups linking people in streets so that neighbours know who is vulnerable and needs some help. We have stood outside together clapping and celebrating the NHS but also protesting at their lack of resources and the way we have undervalued our health and social care staff. It has been a time to reflect on our lives, we have been taken off the treadmill of consumption, needless shopping for entertainment, the roads have been quieter than any time since 1955, there is no longer the constant noise of air traffic overhead. We have been less wasteful, eaten the food in our cupboards, ignored best before dates and used our senses to know whether food is good to eat.

We have exercised close to home, appreciated the flowers growing out of the pavement, our local parks and access to the beautiful South Downs and the sea. Artist Denise Harrison teaches painting at Phoenix Art Space. During May she organised Openwindows2020 to show artwork in windows following the postponement of the Artists Open Houses festival. How did Openwindows2020 go? Openwindows2020 has been very successful and so it will also run next May during the festival so that everybody can take part in showing their art. As other parts of the country are also taking part, Openwindows2020 will continue this year to show groups such as Cambridge Open Houses in July on our Instagram page @openwindows2020. Anybody can still send in work by using the hashtag #openwindows2020. Tell us about your own art… I have a studio at Phoenix Art Space where I do all my paintings using acrylics and oils. I am interested in painting conservation spaces, especially hidden or forgotten places which I stumble across on my walks. I make sketches, take photos, research, and just spend time in every space that I paint. I love the physicality of paint; having synaesthesia enhances my perception of colour. I teach painting at Phoenix Art Space as well as Starling Studio on Havelock Road. My work will be on display in the Starling Studio window throughout July. Teaching is currently on hold, so I am now setting up my own online course and warm-up painting sessions which can be found on my website when I have dates ready. Last year I was commissioned to write a practical book as part of a series, ‘If You’re Bored with Acrylics, Read This Book’ by Octopus Publishing, which is available in all book stores and online. Who are your favourite artists? The work of Fiona Rae, Joan Eardley and Richard Diebenkorn really inspires me, especially their mark making and use of colour.

What do you like to do when you’re not working? I love walking, and this is when I gather visual information for my paintings. I try to seek out new places and particularly enjoy wooded areas and the coast. There’s a great walk from Brighton to Lewes, across the South Downs. In contrast, I also enjoy walking to Shoreham Harbour, passing through the more industrial seaport of Portslade. I spend a lot of time at Stanmer Park, exploring its history and pathways that lead off on other walks to places such as Ditchling Beacon. How has Phoenix Art Space adapted during lockdown? Phoenix is currently closed to the public due to lockdown, but it will eventually have the public back in when it’s safe to do so and return to having courses and exhibitions. The Covid-19 lockdown was quite a setback for Queens Park Tennis Club. Since restrictions were lifted in May, however, the club has been booming with record levels of participation on all six tennis courts.

“We’ve never been busier. There have been tons of new bookings and membership renewals. All that pent up energy and general frustration is taking itself out on the tennis court,” says QPTC director Conrad Brunner.

Queens Park Tennis Club is one of the 12 parks clubs in Brighton & Hove. Since 2017, the club has operated as a non-profit, volunteer-run Community Interest Company, so it manages its own finances and funds its own court maintenance.

“Tennis is probably the best sport for social distancing. All players are necessarily separated by at least two metres, and a net. In a recent analysis, tennis rated the single safest activity. So while visiting a restaurant has a threat level of 8, tennis has a threat level of one.

“This has worked out well for QPTC, and we recommend it to other parks clubs in the city thinking of doing the same thing,” says Brunner. “You don’t want to be waiting on the council for every little decision. If something needs fixing, we just get on with it and do it ourselves. Danny Hoskins lives in Queen’s Park Terrace. He runs Bedlam Brewery, who supply beer across Brighton and Sussex. They operate a solar-powered brewhouse on the South Downs and are now one of the top six independent brewers in the county. How long have you lived in Queen’s Park? Rebekka and I have lived here for four years this summer. How has Bedlam Brewery fared during lockdown? We temporarily lost 95% of our customers with the closure of pubs but our new home delivery service has been a terrific success and we make over 50 deliveries per day while continuing to supply the various bottle shops and businesses offering a take home service. While the majority of our team were furloughed, the three of us that remained were enjoying long but very rewarding days. We missed our Bedlam family but it was and is still great to see so many smiling faces every day, receiving our beer. We understand that you have won recognition for your local community and charity work… Community along with supporting the environment are both core values for Bedlam. We are extremely proud to have been the only brewery to be awarded ‘City Angel’ status by the Pride charity for consecutive years, and our ‘Turtle Recall’ Pale Ale beer has also raised significant funds for the conservation of baby sea turtles. You’ll also find me regularly hosting talks across Brighton & Hove, bringing some Bedlam love and beer to as many people as possible. This is one of the best parts of having a brewery!

And how have you fared during the last few months on a personal level? Apart from the ‘day job’, lots of deliveries and a bit of brewing have kept me fit! We also have the beautiful Queens Park for additional exercise if we need it. What are your plans for the next few months? As pubs start to reopen we have some exciting new beers ready to launch, which I cannot wait to taste. Personally, I am looking forward to buying that first pint in one of my favourite local pubs such as Greys Freehouse, The Village or Hand In Hand and doing some much needed catching up with family and friends, naturally over copious amounts of Bedlam Beer! Have you always lived in Kemp Town? Mum and Dad moved down from Barnes in London when I was about two. I’m 61 now, so I’ve been in Kemp Town a long time. Tell us about your photography… I’ve been taking photographs for about 12 years. Before that, my posture was so bad that I couldn’t use a camera as I’ve got ankylosing spondylitis, an arthritic condition. Then I had an operation about 14 years ago to straighten me up. They broke my back and reset it. I worked in the theatre for about 15 years as a stage manager and I like studio portraits, the wackier the better. You can control the light in a studio. I have a favourite model I use called Jevon and I take a lot of photos of him. I do a bit of short film-making as well. I’ve made a film on domestic violence and one called “Deliver Us” which was on Latest TV. How have you coped with lockdown? It has been challenging for both myself and my partner Sarah, who is also my carer and also a photographer, as neither of us drive, so we haven’t been able to do our usual trips out of Brighton. But we’ve still managed to do quite a lot during the past couple of months, including a couple of indoor photoshoots, a short animation and an art technique demo slideshow for Instagram. I’ve also done some photographic work for a couple of friends.

What was it like growing up with a famous actress as a mother? It was exciting and different. Mum was this well-known actress and we went all over the world. I went to Brighton College. There were three of us brought up by nannies (some of them were weird!) and we didn’t see much of my mum. Is your exhibition at Artisan Coffee House likely to be rescheduled later in the year? It was disappointing when the exhibition had to be postponed. It’s likely to be rescheduled when everything goes back to normal, but we don’t have a date yet. Artisan is still open for take-aways. Black Rock scheme given go-ahead Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee has approved plans submitted by the council for the Black Rock site, including the renovation of the much-loved Grade II Old Reading Room and Temple as part of the creation of a new activity hub. The site, at the eastern end of Madeira Drive, was formerly a 1930s open air swimming pool which closed in 1978 and has long since been demolished.

The plans include expansion of the site with a new realigned free-standing sea wall structure, serving to improve sea defences through an enhanced design based upon the latest flood risk projections. There will also be improvements to access; ecological enhancement; and the creation of an accessible beach boardwalk from Duke’s Mound to Black Rock. The new activity hub will include the provision of an informal children’s play area and temporary uses proposed within the site include an events space, a pump track and a recreation space with half court and basketball net. There will also be new public toilets. Black Rock beach supports coastal vegetated shingle, an internationally rare habitat. The site is also important for supporting a diversity of notable coastal species, including sea kale and tree mallow which are protected, and it is an important stopping-off point for migratory birds. It is proposed to relocate vegetated shingle to

Brighton & Hove City Council has secured £12 million of funding from the Local Enterprise Partnership to provide a scheme of infrastructure works necessary to enable the future development of the site.

the west of the proposed sea wall, south of the Volk’s Railway. The planning officer’s report to the committee concluded: “The proposal is welcomed as it will enable future regeneration of the derelict Black Rock site and implementation of a strategic allocation in the adopted plan. It will also provide significant improvements in links to the Marina.” The Planning Committee, meeting on 10th June, voted unanimously in favour of the application. However, Cllr Bridget Fishleigh said she had concerns about possible traffic congestion on the A259 with the proposed installation of new traffic lights at Duke’s Mound. Cllr Joe Miller agreed with Cllr Fishleigh’s concerns over traffic but said he thought it was a great scheme: “For 41 years this site has been a blot on the east of the city…and therefore I think it’s really important to say that we support it.”

Sharing the space, respecting each other... Ever since movement restrictions were first introduced at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, Brighton & Hove has seen a huge shift in the way people are choosing to travel around the city. More of us have chosen to dust off the bike and cycle short journeys or walk to the shops instead of jumping in the car. There’s been a dramatic reduction in the number of motor vehicles on the roads, down by as much as 60% at the height of movement restrictions.

But there’s more to come. In May, councillors approved a Transport Action Plan that will support the city in its short, medium and long term recovery from Covid-19. The plan includes measures such as ‘pop-up’ cycle lanes, widening footways and prioritising cyclists and pedestrians at junctions around the city. The council is also working to bring forward permanent schemes already agreed, such as the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, proposals for a car free city centre and encouraging more walking and cycling to school. It’s a time to be bold and innovative.

GENERAL

In response, Brighton & Hove City Council has taken some significant steps to keep the city moving and promote active travel to its residents. We were the first local authority in the country to close a road to motor vehicles to free up space for cyclists and pedestrians when Madeira Drive was shut. Old Shoreham Road now has a temporary cycle lane to link with our existing cycle network and NHS workers in the city have been given free memberships to our BTN BikeShare scheme. But we must all play our part in sharing the space we have. Whether we’re in a car, riding a bike or walking, it’s important we respect each other and consider the changing space around us. We want drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to travel respectfully and harmoniously around the city and this can only be done if everyone considers and respects those around them. As with most places around the UK, Brighton & Hove City is working to build a new normal in a post Covid-19 world. The city council is working hard to ensure residents are safer in the short term and to promote accessible and sustainable travel in the long term, but we’re all in this together.

The History of Cycling in Brighton In the summer of 1925, the Brighton Herald published an advert for Bradshaws Bicycles, a local business with branches in Western Road and Blatchington Road.

Brighton’s connections with cycling were established during the Victorian era. James Harrison, an early champion of the sport, opened his ‘Bicycle and perambulator depot’ in Queen’s Road in the 1870s and set up the Brighton Bicycle Club, the first of its kind in the area. Thanks to the growing popularity of cycling, clubs were formed in different parts of Brighton. Competitive cycling was clearly taking off, too. The Preston Park velodrome was created in 1877 and was first used for competitions the following year. Some wonderful material relating to bicycles is held at The Keep Archive, including papers relating to the Brighton Mitre Cycling Club, formed in 1894 and still going strong. Named after the Mitre Tavern, where members used to meet, it held its first track championship in Preston 10 members of the Brighton Mitre Cycling Club, c1937, East Sussex Record Office/The Keep

Park in 1896. The archive includes correspondence and minutes, club magazines, and details of competitions such as the ‘Brighton Mitre 50’, a 50-mile time trial which first took place in 1924. The London to Brighton bike ride first took place in 1976, but archives illustrate some extraordinary early attempts to cover this distance. In 1869, John Mayall Junior cycled with two friends from Trafalgar Square to Brighton in 12 hours, arriving ‘in time and in good condition for dinner’. And the following year, two local men, Mr Moon and Mr Fry, went further, cycling from Brighton to London and back in a day. The Brighton Gazette reported that ‘these roadsters spent a jolly day,’ covering 104 miles in 15 hours, not counting stops for breakfast, lunch and tea. The lockdown – with its empty streets and advice to stay home and avoid public transport - has given us a taste of what it might have been like for the cyclists of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. The challenge now, for those who have rediscovered the joy of cycling, is just to keep getting on our bikes. At the time of writing, The Keep is closed to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic. On-the-spot fines restart for litter louts

Reflecting the city’s values

The council has restarted fining people for littering, with enforcement officers patrolling the beaches and seafront.

Councillor Nancy Platts, Leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, has announced that the council is reviewing all plaques, monuments, statues and street names on public land to ensure that they celebrate legacies that reflect the city’s values.

As more people get out and about, there is an increasing amount of litter being left by those unwilling to find a bin or take their waste home. There will be on-thespot fines of £150 to anyone caught dropping litter or not disposing of it properly. People caught spitting, urinating or defecating in public will also be hit with a £150 fine. Dog owners who don’t pick up their dog’s mess will be fined £80 on the spot. Anyone caught fly-tipping – leaving any waste or household items on land or the street without permission, even in the hope someone will take them away for free – will receive a straight £400 fine.

The council will seek to remove any monuments with clear associations with enslavement or plantations. Cllr Platts said: “The Black Lives Matter movement has rightly shone a spotlight on colonial statues and street names. We will talk with the council’s BME Workers Forum, our local BAME communities and historians to ensure we fully understand the history of our statues and street names and we’ll work collaboratively to commission new street art installations which celebrate the Black community. 39 An update from a local charity who have kept going throughout the pandemic…

News from Martlets Hospice Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic Martlets has kept caring for people with terminal illness and their loved ones at our hospice and across Brighton, Hove and the havens.

At Martlets, we’re trained and skilled in both practical and very ‘human’ ways to support people through uncertainty and we have had to adapt to continue to deliver our essential care to our community day and night. Our services include providing support through our ‘hub’, 24-hour telephone advice line and we have also increased our telephone contact to make sure patients and carers don’t feel isolated. Our staff are helping patients to make video calls to family and friends and we’re running ‘virtual’ wellbeing services including seated yoga, tai chi and relaxation. We have offered ‘Zoom help assistants’ who have managed to get many of our patients using new technology and now have large numbers attending our virtual wellbeing sessions. We have all felt different emotions through these challenging times and we wanted to share with you the Martlets vision of hope, purpose and possibility which is at the heart of everything we do. We are hopeful for a brighter future with fewer restrictions, where we can hug those we love once again and our patients can see our nurses smiling – without a mask. For all of us, there are many possibilities for doing things differently as we make our way through this. As one of our inpatient unit nurses, Jess, commented: “The experience has renewed my gratitude,

love and respect for family, friends and colleagues. I notice I’m spending more time than I used to being present to each moment; I’m finding freedom and happiness in the small things, and in connecting with the people I care for.” Martlets relies on community support for the majority of its funding, but we’re unable to run our usual fundraising events this year due to the pandemic. They are currently in the Isthmian League South East, the fourth tier of non-league football; their 2019-20 season ended prematurely due to Covid-19 and was declared null and void.

45 An appeal to fund a new statue in the Royal Pavilion Estate…

Hidden from history A statue for Mary Clarke In recent weeks people across the world have been re-evaluating the political and cultural significance of existing statues and memorials.

Mary Clarke was born in 1861. She was a co-founder of the national Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) with her sister Emmeline Pankhurst and its paid Organiser for Brighton and the South East from 1909 to 1910. She was the first suffragette to die for women’s right to vote, yet there is no public memorial to her. Mary was gentle, but extraordinarily brave. Having escaped an abusive marriage, she dedicated her life to achieving women’s suffrage. While in Brighton, Mary lodged with suffragette Minnie Turner in Victoria Road. She was a formidable background organiser, but took centre stage if required, addressing rallies and public meetings in Hyde Park, Hove Town Hall and the Dome. Supporters recalled how each evening on Brighton seafront she would address several hundred people, remaining calm and good humoured in the face of persistent heckling. Suffragette leader Emmeline Pethick-Lawrence recalled: “She was on several occasions very much knocked about, and some of her young workers were inclined to strike out in her defence, but she always restrained them.” Mary was injured at ‘Black Friday’ on 18th November 1910, where, for six hours, 300 women outside Parliament were brutally beaten and sexually assaulted by police. Mary was bedridden for three days.

On the 22nd November she returned to London to protest about the police’s actions. Imprisoned for one month, she went on hunger strike and was forcibly fed. On Christmas Day 1910, two days after her release, she collapsed and died of a brain haemorrhage. Mary’s obituary, delivered at her memorial service in the Royal Pavilion, called her the “first woman martyr who has gone to death for this cause”. A wreath from Brighton members quoted Mary’s own words telegraphed from Police Court: “I am glad to pay the price of freedom.” We hope to place Mary’s statue in the Pavilion Estate, as a symbol of the city’s commitment to democracy, equality and women’s rights.
