Meet Councillor Zoë John Zoë John was elected in a May by-election as a Green Party councillor for Hollingdean & Stanmer ward, replacing Labour councillor Tracey Hill.

Yes, we’ve lived in Hollingdean for nearly a decade and before then we were only just on the other side of the ward! We love it here, our eldest goes to the school three roads away, we have woods at the end of our road and a wonderful community, local shops, town and the seafront are a short bus ride away and the Downs a short walk… It’s pretty perfect really.

particularly those in central government, make policies for people who they have never even spoken to, let alone sought to find out what people are actually experiencing. I spent a lot of time feeling angry and then decided that I needed to direct that energy into something positive. Initially I had decided just to become more active locally, but the by-election came up and the rest, as they say, is history!

Tell us about your background...

What do you hope to achieve in the ward?

I’ve done lots of different things, but for the last 12 years (give or take a few bumps in the road) I have been a Researcher and Lecturer in Human Centred and Sustainable Design. I am currently finishing writing a Doctorate that has a focus on Sustainable Fashion. I am also a parent of two young children, and as you can imagine they have shaped a lot of the last seven or so years!

What are your interests outside politics?

Do you live in this part of Brighton?

I’d like to respond to the needs of the ward. So far that has been a lot about safer streets, Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, care for our communities and more bins!

My neighbours and I have been developing a community garden at the end of our road, and as restrictions lifted it’s been a wonderful way to connect with people outside of my immediate bubble. I also love What made you want to become a walking and we were very lucky recently councillor? to get a dog, so I can’t wait for long walks I was really fuelled by the pandemic and seeing the inequalities in our society widen. through the woods and onto the Downs. I find it very strange that any of us, but You can contact Zoë by emailing: zoe.john@brighton-hove.gov.uk To advertise to 3000 FIVEWAYS homes and 12,000 across Brighton visit www.brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

Mystery masterpieces at Preston Manor

School places petition

Preston Manor has reopened with two mysterious paintings which were recently the stars of BBC Four’s programme Britain’s Lost Masterpieces.

A petition on “School Places for Catchment Children”, led by Amy Hyland, was debated earlier in the year at full council on 25 March

The paintings have been in the Fine Art Collection of Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, stored for many years with incorrect information. The Lost Masterpieces team, which tracks BBC Four Lost Masterpieces presenters down lost and hidden Bendor Grosvenor and Emma Dabiri paintings, visited to investigate the artworks and to solve the mystery of their true origins. The programme, presented by art historian Bendor Grosvenor and Emma Dabiri, selected the two paintings in the Royal Pavilion and Museums Trust archive. One painting known as Mary Magdalene was recorded as by an unknown artist of the Italian School. The second, called Balthazar, was thought to be by Flemish artist Bernaert van Orley. The team used scientific sleuthing techniques, X-rays and infrared lighting and then sifted through museum records to find out more. They eventually discovered that they had been painted by completely different artists: Francesco Trevisani painted Mary Magdalene and Joos Van Cleve painted Balthazar. The programme is available on BBC iPlayer until the end of 2021. The works of art are now on display together for the first time at Preston Manor. Art lovers can find out just how the team solved the mystery of the paintings’ provenance and see the incredible methods used to authenticate them as two of the world’s great Lost Masterpieces. For more information and to book, visit brightonmuseums.org.uk/prestonmanor or phone 03000 290900.

The petition called for Brighton & Hove City Council to review the number of secondary school places available at Dorothy Stringer and Varndean School for the September 2021 intake. There are 62 children in the Dorothy Stringer/Varndean catchment who couldn’t be offered a catchment area school this year and have been offered places far from home. At full council, Cllr Hannah Clare said that the situation had been looked at and unfortunately there was nothing that could be done at this stage, although the process would be reviewed and hopefully improvements made for the future. The petition was referred to the council’s Children, Young People and Skills Committee, which met on 14 June, and that committee agreed to note the petition.

Making as a shared experience

FIVEWAYS

Upcoming ceramics workshops at Coachwerks, Hollingdean…

Hi, I’m Rosie! I’m a woodworker and ceramicist. I previously studied at the University of Brighton and have been lured back into the hub of community and creativity that is so alive here in Brighton! As a maker, I’m drawn towards working with natural materials. I create my forms in wood, sourced locally from Sussex. Then I transfer these textures into clay to create woodgrain ceramic forms.

Making is something that is intrinsic to us as humans. Making helps us to engage with the physical world around us. The more we understand how things are made, the more we can connect to the objects, materials and therefore meaning of things in our lives. I’m excited to be teaching upcoming ceramics workshops at the beautiful space at Coachwerks in Hollingdean, Brighton. We’ll be crafting plates by hand and also using production techniques involving plaster moulds. We will then decorate our handmade tableware using coloured clay slips and different mark making tools to create botanical inspired patterns and images. Learn a new skill and have a go at ceramics! Beginners welcome! Dates: Tues 6th July 6-9pm / Sun 18th July 2-5pm. £40pp. Max 5 in a group. All work to be glazed, fired and collected. 19

KEMPTOWN

Creating in a time of silence during the pandemic was hard. But I found ways around it by experimenting with traditional forms of pit firing, using whatever materials were available to me without a kiln. Finally, it was a relief to move into a studio, as an artist in residence at a school in Sussex. After months of working in isolation, being able to run workshops as lockdown lifted has been a fantastic way of allowing creativity to become a shared experience once again.

Hollingdean Terrace. BN1 7HB I am also working with Coachwerks to organise a series of subsidised outreach workshops for carers. If you care for someone at home, a friend or family member or even a neighbour in need, then this could be for you! It will be a series of fun, relaxed workshops making and decorating your own tableware. We want to engage more members of the local community with the brilliant arts space at Coachwerks and get more people making! Contact me to find out more about upcoming ceramic workshops that you can get involved in. Email: rosietdesigns@gmail.com Instagram: @rosietdesigns Web: www.rosietweedale.com

10 Hanover Action have a new website…

News from Hanover Action Hanover Action has been active in your community for 11 years. As a small community group we stand for: •

Working together on practical solutions to promote community spirit and alternatives to unsustainable consumption

Raising awareness of and acting in the light of the climate and ecological emergency we all face

If those principles appeal to you and you’ve got ideas to contribute or would just like to get involved we would love to hear from you. We have just launched our new website https://hanoveraction602341499.wordpress.com - you can see details of some of the things we have been involved in over the last years: •

Eco-refit of Hanover Community Centre and development of a pleasant garden in the car park

Promoting street events and the Zocalo

Showing environmentally themed films and hosting events and speakers

Planting street trees and coordinating neighbours to look after the planters in their street

a wider level. The recent announcements about courtrooms and boardrooms turning on the executives at Shell, ExxonMobil and Chevron and forcing them to go far further to reduce climate emissions is a really welcome sign that campaigning works and environmental activists are getting the message across. Our next meeting is going to be at 7:30 on the 7th July; it is a social event, welcome to new members and will be held outside on the grassy space opposite the Constant Service on Islingword Road. Bring a rug or a chair, something to drink or a snack and come and join us.

One reason for holding it on that space is that we are considering putting in a grant • Running an annual seedling swap and application to Southern Water (who own the land and have recently launched a sale • Researching and promoting the need community grants scheme) to improve the area and make it an attractive place to sit for bike shelters and spend time with neighbours, a place • Working on a One Planet Living acwith attractive planting to attract bees and tion plan for Hanover butterflies and birds and a space children • Promoting Hanover to be a pilot area can enjoy. We would like to discuss that for Liveable Neighbourhoods idea and other ideas that local people might have with anyone that is interested. Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News The three HEG councillors met to support the peaceful demo organised by ACORN last month. Together with Labour colleagues we pledged our support for Acorn’s demand, which states: ‘I pledge to do everything in my power to oppose the police, crime sentencing and courts bill.’ This bill, we believe, in short, gives too much power to officers, to the Home Secretary, and in turn could violate human rights. It would unquestionably be discriminatory towards specific groups, so we strongly oppose it. In March I attended the Town Hall with Labour’s Cllr Grimshaw to receive the RISEUP 30k-strong petition to the council. The domestic violence commission saw RISE lose a key contract through the council’s procurement process, of which councillors have no part. Greens are committed to finding a way forward and we continue to stand with anyone who has experienced domestic abuse in our city. At my request, the council are establishing a cross-party working group to examine what happened in this instance, and how we can work with other parties to prevent it happening again. At the time of writing, our libraries are planning to resume more services on 21st June, subject to easing of restrictions. Visit the council website for more information. Ward News Since the easing of restrictions, we’ve carefully been getting out and about. Hanover Action organised the ever-popular annual seed swap last month, and despite it being a drizzly day, lots of plants were exchanged and sold. It was simply lovely to see people again.

The folks at GoodGym are back up and running (forgive the pun). We usually meet with them every six weeks or so to litter pick, paint out graffiti, or weed. Please let ward councillors know if an area needs some TLC, and watch the Hanover Community Facebook page and Twitter for dates. We are keen to work with residents to make our streets safer, greener and happier. Cllr Elaine Hills is doing sterling work on collating ideas and turning them into reality. Please email thoughts to: liveablehanover@gmail.com At publication, our ‘in-person’ surgery will have resumed. Long may it continue! It’s always the second Saturday of every month, 10.15am-11.15am. Venues currently change each month, so keep an eye on Facebook and Twitter for dates. I am here to represent and assist in matters relating to the local area. 15 Meet a local children’s author…

Richard Sinclair lives in Hanover and writes children’s books. His latest book, written during lockdown, is “Mason and the Bees”. How did you become a children’s author? My daughter lives in Brisbane, Australia, and is an avid reader. I started writing stories for her about her dog Mason on the long flights between Australia and the UK and it took off from there. My new book, ‘Mason and the Bees’, is my fourth book to be published. Tell us more about Mason and the Bees… Mason is a super clever West Highland White Terrier and he is left at home in the garden one day while his owners are out. He can smell tantalising food from a party being held up the street and he is determined to get his paws on some, so he comes up with a cunning plan involving some bees and a fishing rod… ‘Mason and the Bees’ is a fully illustrated book for 0-7 year olds. It’s based on a semi-true story. Who is your own favourite children’s author? I would say Julia Donaldson. ‘The Gruffalo’ and Julia’s many other creations were essential reading when my children were growing up. The style of her books is quite similar to my own and I’m sure must have influenced me.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

When I am not writing children’s books, I am writing songs with my band Murmurs of Earth. Our latest single ‘Edge of my Dreams’, was released in May and I have been doing lots of radio interviews to What are you working on at the moment? promote that which has been fun. www.murmursofearth.uk I am working on a follow-up book called ‘Mason and the Barbecue’, which again Mason and the Bees by features our mischievous dog and his adRichard Sinclair is available ventures, which I hope will be out later in from Amazon, Waterstones the year. I have plans for at least another and other major book two after that. stockists. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

Royal Spa concerts The Brighton Early Music Festival continues its summer season of outdoor events until 11 July, with most of the concerts taking place at the Royal Spa Nursery School in Queen’s Park. Audiences bring their own chairs or picnic blankets and are socially distanced.

St Luke’s Church

“The Madrigal Reimagined”, an exciting exploration of the madrigal by the Monteverdi String Band, is on Saturday 3 July (6pm and 8pm) at the Royal Spa.

St Luke’s Church, Queens Park Road, has commenced many of its popular community activities .

Tickets cost £15 (£7.50 concessions); free for under-12s and carers. On Sunday 11 July at 7pm, there’s “Opera @ The Spa”, a gala fundraiser by an international cast of young performers, with highlights from Francesca Caccini’s colourful and witty opera “La liberazione di Ruggiero”. 19 News from St John’s School and College in Walpole Road…

Blue Plaque to be unveiled at St John’s The Mayor of Brighton and Hove, Cllr Alan Robins, will be unveiling a Blue Plaque in honour of the founder of St John’s School & College, Sister Jane Borradaile, in Walpole Road, at 11.30am on 8th July. QUEENS PARK

Jane Borradaile (1825 – 1918) founded a home for deprived children from London which has now evolved into one of southern England’s major providers of special education, residential care and therapy for young people with autism and other complex needs. Jane Borradaile’s work was driven by her strong Anglican faith and the philanthropic ethos of the late 19th and early 20th century. St John’s is now a secular special school and college, but Jane Borradaile’s values and caring spirit remain a central part of St John’s to this very day. Further information can be found in the History of St John’s by Simon Smith, who is now Chair of the Trustee Board: https:// www.bloomsbury.com/uk/a-history-ofst-johns-brighton-9781784423476/ Simon Smith’s book describes St John’s as: “a remarkable and enduring part of Brighton’s educational landscape”. Simon Charleton BEM, who was awarded a British Empire Medal in last year’s Birthday Honours for the work of St John’s all through the pandemic, said: “Jane Borradaile’s work lives on today in the outstanding care, therapy and education the staff at St John’s provide – day in, day out. She provides a great role model to our young people of a strong and deter-

20 Meet a local resident who’s just published a guidebook on grief…

Queen’s Park person… Sasha Bates Sasha Bates is a psychotherapist and writer, living in Freshfield Road. Her second book, A Grief Companion, was published in June. How long have you lived in the Queen’s Park area? Since 2017. You started out as a TV director and producer. What sort of programmes were you involved with? I worked on a huge variety of factual entertainment programmes - Grand Designs, How to Look Good Naked, Embarrassing Bodies, Omnibus, Live and Kicking, and more. How did your change of career come about? I was fed up with the stress and long hours of the television world and wanted to do something more meaningful. I’d benefited from psychotherapy myself and thought it would be a good way to give something back, as well as educate myself further. The writing was something I used to do on the side – travel journalism mainly – but when my husband died I found myself writing about grief, almost as self-therapy. My first book, Languages of Loss, was the result and I found that writing sat very easily alongside my therapy practice, so this second book followed, with a third on its way. Why did you decide to write about grief? It wasn’t so much a decision as a necessity. I was so thrown by my husband’s unexpected death that to write about it was the only way I could make any sense of the tumultuous emotions I was experiencing. As I wrote my feelings down, I found my therapist’s voice naturally came in alongside to explain and reassure myself. I realised

that understanding what was happening to me, through the lens of psychotherapeutic theory, was helpful and thought it might be useful to others too. Understanding doesn’t take the pain away but can normalise and help you feel less mad and overwhelmed. Tell us more about A Grief Companion… I had amazing feedback from Languages of Loss, with many readers asking for more practical suggestions for navigating their grief. At the same time Covid was creating grievers out of all of us and I was doing a lot of press and radio interviews where the question everyone asked was how to cope. So a guidebook for grievers, and for those trying to support them, felt like the obvious next step. A Grief Companion is the result. A Grief Companion by Sasha Bates is available now from bookshops and online at Hive, Waterstones and Amazon.

Liveable Hanover and Tarner

Madeira Terrace

Plans for the city’s first low-traffic neighbourhood, which includes the Tarner area of Queens Park ward, are progressing well. Leaflets to inform residents about the scheme have been distributed, and we are keen to hear your ideas.

Work is continuing to progress on the restoration of Madeira Terrace and concept designs for restoration of the first 40 arches have now been approved. Work on-site is expected to start in 2022.

More information and opportunities to get involved can be found at: hanoverandelmgrove.net/home/liveable-neighbourhoods Real Junk Food Project Brighton’s Kemptown Community Café has reopened for takeaways every Wednesday from 12.30 – 14.00 at St John the Baptist parish hall. You can collect a delicious takeaway lunch made from food that would otherwise go to landfill on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis. You are encouraged to eat your takeaway in the church courtyard or on the green opposite. Also at the parish hall is a non-referral foodbank which can be accessed by anyone who is facing financial hardship. The foodbank is open on Sundays from 12.30 – 14.30. Drug-related crime Councillors in Queens Park are continuing to address the on-going problems of drug-related activity and anti-social behaviour, particularly in the ward’s parks, Queens Park and Tarner Park. Edward Street Quarter The Edward Street Quarter development is rapidly taking shape and will provide three new public squares, including 80 mature trees, as well as around 300 new solar panels. The development is also providing employment and training for local people.

Fitzherbert Community Hub Brighton Table Tennis Club, Real Junk Food Project, Voices in Exile and the Catholic Parish of East Brighton are working together to transform the parish hall and courtyard at St John the Baptist Church to create a Community Hub and City Garden. The Fitzherbert Community Hub will be a place where residents can get to know each other, and will bring together the links between sport, physical activity, eating well, health, wellbeing and community cohesion. There’s no such thing as owt for nowt – oh yes there is! There’s been a heightened awareness of neighbours in need and no shortage of people stepping up to the plate to give their time freely to ensure that support is to hand when it is most needed. It has challenged the received wisdom encapsulated in the old Yorkshire saying “There’s owt for nowt.” People of all ages have demonstrated that within many of us is an unsung hero bursting to get out and all without a single thought of personal gain. 27 Brighton news…

Electric Vehicle Rally The inaugural London to Brighton Electric Vehicle Rally, sponsored by The Big Lemon bus company, is to take place on Sunday 18th July 2021. It will go ahead with restricted numbers and social distancing. The organisers say it will demonstrate and celebrate the rapid development of electric vehicles and renewable energy. It will celebrate The Big Lemon’s transition to a 100% electric fleet, powered by renewable energy and owned by the local community.

The rally will start at Westminster and finish at Madeira Drive, taking in picturesque Surrey hills, the Sussex Weald and Ditchling Beacon on its 58.7 mile route (94.5km). The road at Madeira Drive will be closed to host a mile-long village of showcases, workshops, member displays, entertainment, challenges, food and drink. Founders Tom Druitt and Bill Murray said: “The Big Lemon London to Brighton Electric Vehicle Rally is the first of what will hopefully be many events showcasing the development of electric vehicles and renewable energy. The aim is to raise awareness of more sustainable vehicle technologies, and have some fun at the same time.”

29 Kemptown news…

In a series of live streamed performances, with Arts Council support, Melting Vinyl is giving a new generation of exciting artists the opportunity to perform at St George’s Church, Kemptown. This series of shows celebrates grassroots musicians, who can perform against a beautiful backdrop with outstanding acoustics to complement their music. Each show will be recorded by Brighton sound engineer Mat Benzie and camera/ light artist Innerstrings. The next concert is by fourpiece ĠENN, on 8th July 2021 at 8pm. ĠENN was established when Leona (vox), Janelle (guitar) and Leanne (bass), a trio based in Malta, struck up an online friendship with British drummer Sofia. They are now all firmly rooted in the UK. On 15th July at 8pm, French-Swedish musician, composer and sound artist Johanna Bramli will be performing. She is one half of motorik electronic pop band Fröst. Tickets cost £5 and are available from meltingvinyl.seetickets.com

Volk’s Railway A report to Brighton & Hove City Council’s Tourism, Equalities, Culture and Communities (TECC) Committee, meeting on 17 June, considered some suggested potential improvements to the Volk’s Railway which were put forward last year by the Volk’s Electric Railway Association (VERA).

KEMPTOWN

Grassroots concerts at St George’s Church

The report, which was accepted by the committee, recommended as a priority a project to achieve a new accessible, weatherproof railcar with a new shelter and siding. Most of the available resources are to be used for that project. As well as addressing accessibility issues, a new railcar that can operate in wind and rain would provide a more reliable service. The report also said that careful consideration should be given during the development of the Eastern Seafront Masterplan to extending the railway to Black Rock. Any extension to the line would take up a strip of land across the Black Rock site which would inhibit movement across the site and could have a significant negative impact on links into and out of Brighton Marina. New signage for the railway was considered, but this could damage the waterproof membrane of the station, so other options are to be considered to improve marketing. Also considered was the provision of a new shelter at the Halfway Station, but there were issues with cost and with identifying a suitable space.

31 News from the council…

Two-way cycle lane on Madeira Drive Motor vehicles can continue to travel one-way eastbound from the Palace Pier, exiting at Duke’s Mound, and Madeira Drive will continue to be available for organised events. including the Brighton Marathon and Burning the Clocks. The changes have been made through an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO), which means the council can develop the scheme further if required. You can also comment on the changes up to 29 November 2021. Left to right: Councillors Steve Davis, Amy Heley and Jamie Lloyd open the new cycle lane

The changes, agreed at a meeting of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee last September, are creating more space for both walkers and cyclists and retain vehicle access to the road. It means cyclists can now move east and westbound - separated from motor vehicles and pedestrians - all the way from the Palace Pier to Duke’s Mound. It also means pedestrians have more space to walk or exercise along the promenade with the existing cycle lane being removed. The distinctive green-coloured cycle lane is part of a series of improvements to the road which will also include: • pedestrian crossing points at key spots • extra parking spaces for Blue Badge holders (from 14 to 27) • re-orientation of parking spaces for easier use.

A new chapter for an iconic part of the city Opening the new cycle lane, Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee Amy Heley said: “The new cycle lane looks amazing and will benefit everyone who uses Madeira Drive. Moving the existing cycle lane off the pavement means cyclists no longer need to share space with pedestrians and motor vehicles, which undoubtedly makes it safer for everyone. With people using the Drive for exercise and to visit local businesses, we know how important it is to residents that we create more space on our pavements. “It’s so important that we are also creating extra parking spaces for Blue Badge holders and ensure that Madeira Drive can still be used for organised events which are so popular throughout the year. Madeira Drive is such an iconic part of Brighton & Hove. These improvements will help write the next chapter in its long and rich history.”

33 News from the council…

Ash dieback forces removal of trees A devastating disease that could wipe out thousands of trees throughout the city is forcing Brighton & Hove City Council to remove them for safety reasons before they collapse or fall down. Although many of the trees the council are removing look healthy, they are mainly riddled with the fungal infection ash dieback (ADB) and could cause serious damage to people and property if left alone. The disease is not only affecting ash trees in Brighton & Hove, it’s also killing the species throughout the country, with the worst affected areas being in the south-east of England.

The council’s tree experts will use this as an opportunity to develop areas with a wider range of species and habitat diversity to cope with diseases. They are working closely with ecologists to minimise any potential disturbance to protected species like nesting birds and bats. Ash dieback is impossible to contain Unfortunately, ash dieback is impossible to contain. The symptoms first become visible during early June when the leaves are emerging. These show themselves as wilting, and dark discoloration on the leaves with elongated lesions developing on the smaller branches. Eventually the

Although the council has relatively few ash trees within more urban areas, around 20% of all woodland trees owned by the council are ash. With an estimated 7580% of ash trees throughout the country expected to die within the next five to ten years, we must accept that our woodlands will look very different as a result. whole crown will become infected. The disease spreads via spores caught in the wind from tiny mushrooms born from the main leaf stalk and can spread over a tenmile radius within one year. Some ash trees are tolerant or resistant to ADB and will be retained where possible to help re-stock our woodlands with native ash trees. Tree tops will be left on site mostly as a means to feed nutrients back into the cycle and to avoid suppressing ground flora with layers of wood chip. Please be careful in woodland areas Until ash removal works have been completed within our woodlands, remember to be extra careful when in these areas, especially during windy days, due to the potential risk of falling trees and deadwood. The first two sites the council have started work on are Coney Hill Woods, next to Mill Road near Waterhall, and Coldean Lane.

36 There are several Shakespeare favourites this month at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park…

July line-up at the Brighton Open Air Theatre

In July at BOAT, there are extended runs of Shakespeare favourites A Midsummer Night’s Dream (7-10 July), by Changeling Theatre, and Romeo and Juliet (14-17 July), presented by The Duke’s Theatre Company, whose production is packed with live music, uproarious comedy and heartbreak. There’s also The Comedy of Errors by Oddsocks Productions at the end of the month (30-31 July). Other drama this month includes Dracula (21-24 July). Identity Theatre present this Victorian Gothic masterpiece with full respect for the original nightmare creation. With shades of fairy tale and folk legend, this beautiful adaptation reflects aspects often missed in contemporary reworkings – the underlying sensuality and sheer abandon buried but very much alive in the original text. Don’t Dress for Dinner (1-3 July) is a breath-taking boulevard farce by Marc Camoletti. You can spend An Afternoon with Joe Stilgoe on Sunday 4 July. Joe is an internationally acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter who has created a fresh sound for jazz in the 21st century. Another musical offering is Illyria’s performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera HMS Pinafore, with a reduced cast on a beautiful nautical set (29 July). For children, there’s a brand new, family-friendly dance adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (18 July). The iconic story is brought to life like never before in this high quality one-hour ballet, performed by an accomplished cast of dancers and musicians, with original choreography. Wonders with Grimm (25 July) by Heartbreak Productions is an evening of enchanting storytelling, full of magic, puppetry, and music, as you enter into the fantastical world of the Brothers Grimm with altered endings and a modern twist.

An Afternoon with Joe Stilgoe is on 4 July

There’s also an action-packed adaptation of The Three Musketeers by Immersion Theatre (28 July), who invite you on a swashbuckling adventure of epic proportions. This gripping tale, brimming with excitement, danger and comedy, as well as bags of audience interaction, will have families on the edge of their seats to find out whether the heroes will thwart the scheming Cardinal Richelieu and the deadly Milady de Winter. 39 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

The first swimmer at Black Rock Bathing Pool

The Mayor looks on, hat off, perhaps in deference to the perfectly-formed lady in front of him. There are admiring glances from the fully-clothed group in the background, too, although the men to the right seem to be more concerned with their pipe and cigarette. In the distance you can see the houses at Roedean, the cliff line towards Rottingdean and the east end of the massive complex of Marine Gate, finished (but not painted its iconic white!) in 1939. Virtually nothing remains today of Brighton’s glamorous Art Deco lido, apart from the extended sea frontage and some steps which went down to the changing rooms. It was built during the 1930s on a site which now lies immediately west of the access road to Brighton Marina. There were two pools – the larger with a notorious deep end – and an elegant two-height diving platform. On the upper level spectators could sit on the curved glass-fronted terrace and enjoy the café and restaurant. Filled with sea water, the pool was a huge local attraction. It was also a venue for swimming galas, celebrity photographs and model boat competitions. The spring bank holiday in 1947 was a great event on the South Coast, with over 100,000 visitors to Brighton. Beaches and

It’s difficult not to smile at this picture (ARG/3/3312). We can only imagine the topic of conversation on this chilly bank holiday May morning, between the Mayoress of Brighton, swathed in her fur coat and feet squashed into smart shoes, and the first visitor to Black Rock Swimming Pool at the start of the summer season in 1947.

seaside attractions were fully open for the first time since the war. According to local businesses, it was ‘a pre-war crowd but not much money about’. People did sit and look at the sea, however, making it, ‘the biggest ever deckchair day’. The Corporation received over £223 in deckchair rental from nearly 18,000 people. Eighteen extra relief trains were put on to deal with the 30,000 daytrippers, and homeward-bound queues started building up at Brighton Station from 4pm. Although taken by a photographer attached to the Evening Argus and the Sussex Evening News, this picture did not appear in the local papers that week. And, taking a longer look, perhaps one can imagine several reasons why. www.thekeep.info

Fostering...is it the right time for you? Brighton & Hove City Council know that the decision to become a foster carer can take years, and a lot of careful thought, consideration and research. Many will hold back until the ‘time is right’, so here we look at some of the most common fostering circumstances. We took early retirement Martin, 64, and Liz, 60, took early retirement when Martin sold his business, and quickly experienced a “growing void”. The couple weren’t ready to take things easy and wanted to take on another challenge. They now enjoy fostering teenagers because it is a “familiar stage of parenting”. Liz says, “Having teenagers keeps me young, it’s got me back into real life!”

Sarah, 33, and Gemma, 35, don’t have children of their own, but both work professionally in childcare roles. It’s true that you will need some childcare experience to foster, but this does not have to have been gained through parenthood. To gain the childcare experience required, you need to understand how it feels to be fully responsible for a child overnight and on a regular basis. We wanted to make a difference as a family Sarah, Stephen and their two children aged 11 and 7 began fostering a year ago. Fostering has been a positive experience for them all and Sarah says she is proud of the “wonderful compassion, kindness and maturity” that her children have displayed. Stephen says, “It has turned out to be one of the best things we have ever done - for the children as well as for Sarah and myself.” I needed to re-evaluate my life skills and my career path Dave, 45, gained valuable experience through his 15-year career as a youth worker, but felt the time was right for him to help change the future of one young person at a time. “I loved my job, but I love being a foster carer even

more. I’ve been able to use my professional experience to help guide the young people in my care.” Beverly, 39, felt unfulfilled and unhappy in her role as a sales executive, so took a new direction in life as a foster carer. “I felt sick of feeling like what I was doing wasn’t enough – I wanted to make a difference.” They both received extensive training to ensure they had the skills and expertise required.

GENERAL

We don’t have children of our own, but we have plenty of experience to share

When my children left home, I needed to fill the void When Nick and Felicity’s children left home, the time felt right for them to make a difference as foster carers. For some parents, children leaving home is a liberating time, but many find it difficult to adjust to the sudden emptiness and space. Fostering is a great opportunity for people whose own children are moving on in their lives. Felicity says, “I had so much more ‘Mum’ left in me.” Email fosteringrecruitment@brighton-hove.gov.uk for details of upcoming virtual information events or visit www.fosteringinbrightonandhove.org.uk

50 Brighton Stories... In 2022, QueenSpark Books will be celebrating our 50th anniversary. Brighton nightlife in the 1970s…what are your memories of going out in Brighton?;

From life in the World Wars, to clubbing and performance art; from working life to days on the beach; from memories of childhood poverty to accounts of newly-arrived migrants - the first-hand stories in our archive are a unique record of what makes Brighton what it is today. To mark the anniversary, we will be publishing a landmark book comprising 50 Stories, and we are looking for tales, anecdotes and reminiscences from Brighton residents, on the following themes: 1. Donkey Rides A summer scene c1890 at the Donkey Station on the Lower Promenade, always a popular attraction to children in Victorian, and even later, times. It is thought that donkey rides continued in Brighton until the early 1960s. The year of this photograph is not known, but it dates from the early 1890s, because the Metropole Hotel is seen in its original elevation while gas lamps are just being replaced by the electric light standards, introduced in 1893.

47 Brighton news…

Blind Veterans UK to move from Ovingdean Chief Executive of Blind Veterans UK, Major General (Rtd) Nick Caplin, said: “Unfortunately our iconic, long-serving building near Brighton is now becoming less and less suitable for our purposes. We have decided to take the difficult decision to leave this building by 2024 and begun the search for a new home. This building has seen some historic periods over the last 83 years, not least the super-human efforts of all our care staff in protecting and supporting our permanent residents there throughout the pandemic.

“Unfortunately our iconic, long-serving building near Brighton is now becoming less and less suitable for our purposes. “The blind veteran population we support today is very different to that of the 1930s and the average age of the veterans we support now is 87. So, this is an opportunity for us to move to a new building, offering different services, that far better suits their needs and the needs of future blind veterans.” The building, located just off the seafront next to Roedean School, was first opened in 1938. The work of architect Francis Lorne, it is believed to be unique in being purpose-built for younger blind people who themselves had input into its design and functions. Lesley Garven, Brighton Centre Manager, said: “Our goal is to find a building that is

better suited and more accessible for our blind veterans today. We are allowing time to do this move properly and are committed to continuing our care of our permanent residents for as long as is required. When we move, those residents will be invited to join us.” Blind Veterans UK has had a base in Sussex since 1915, just weeks after the charity was founded to support those blinded in the First World War. From 1917, the charity occupied a larger property in Kemp Town. In addition to providing training and social activities, the centres in the county and elsewhere have variously served to provide holidays, a healthy seaside environment for those needing longerterm rehabilitation, and care for those who sadly have suffered with severe mental or physical health problems additional to their loss of sight. Although initially founded to support those blinded in conflict, Blind Veterans UK now supports veterans regardless of when they served or how they lost their sight.

New rapid electric vehicle chargers

A safe return to public transport

The city’s electric vehicle infrastructure is continuing to grow with the introduction of three new rapid charging hubs.

Brighton & Hove City Council are encouraging residents and visitors to once again use public transport to get into and around the city. Passenger numbers have increased in recent months, but numbers are still significantly down compared to a time before the pandemic.

They have been installed at four city locations: Preston Park, Ashton Rise and Victoria Road A fourth at Brighton Racecourse will be installed later in the year.

The hubs are designed in the long term for Brighton & Hove’s fleet of taxis, but two bays at each hub More public transport use will can be used by any electric vehicle owner until mean we can free up space for such time that taxi uptake requires all the bays. those who need to use a motor veA rapid charger can fully charge an electric hicle, such as Blue Badge holders, vehicle in as little as 30 minutes. Both rapid hubs tradespeople and those making and residential chargers cost 26p per kWh and are powered by 100% renewable energy. The new deliveries. rapid charging hubs are in addition to the 207 on-street charging points installed across the city last year. Residents and visitors can find their nearest charging point by downloading the EB Charging app, ‘Electric Blue’, to their mobile phones (at electricblueuk.com/drivers).

The city has limited car parking spaces available at busy times. For example, during the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May, The Lanes, Regency Square and Trafalgar Street car parks were 97% full or higher between 1pm and 3pm.

Amy Heley, Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “Our partners in public transport have worked very hard since the start of the pandemic to support safe travel for key workers and are continuing the good work as more of us get back to travelling by bus, train, taxi and bike. We have an excellent public transport network in the city which avoids the need to travel by car, meaning more space for those who do need to drive.”

53 Keep safe if you’re swimming in the sea this summer…

Beach and sea safety

At the time of writing, there are four main lifeguard posts on the beach at the following locations, from 10am to 6pm, although this information may change:

rnli.org/safety. The seafront team also post safety messages from their BHSeafrontTeam social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram.

Hove (opposite King Alfred)

Central Hove Lawns (bottom of Grand Avenue)

Central Brighton (opposite the seafront office)

If you are heading to the beach, please enjoy the beach responsibly. That includes disposing of litter in the appropriate bins provided.

East side of the Palace Pier (Madeira Drive)

The stations have new lifeguard lookout towers which provide greater visibility for the team.

While the air temperature may be warm, the water is still cold. Keep an eye on children near the water’s edge and keep pets on leads and away from the shoreline. Please help the council maintain a safe and enjoyable seafront by taking extra care if you are swimming in the sea. While the air temperature may be warm, the water is still cold. Keep an eye on children near the water’s edge and keep pets on leads and away from the shoreline. There is additional information about seaside safety on the RNLI’s website at:

Flags The team is also keen to remind people to swim within the areas patrolled by the lifeguards. These are clearly marked with red and yellow flags. A red flag means it is dangerous to bathe or swim and you should stay away from the water. This could be due to dangerous sea conditions, but it could also be as a result of a health risk caused by a sewage spill following a storm. Don’t drink and go in the water Brighton & Hove City Council’s seafront team is also calling on residents and visitors to avoid swimming if they have consumed alcohol. It is never safe to go into the sea after drinking alcohol. Even a small amount can speed up the onset of hypothermia. Drinking reduces your capabilities and perceptions. You may also think you are a better swimmer than your true ability and take unnecessary risks.

55 A great charity event on 24-25 July…

Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail Driftwood Fundraising Group, chaired and run by Geoff Stonebanks, has been organising the Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail since 2012. Sadly, the event had to be cancelled in 2020 but plans are in hand for a scaled-down trail to take place over the weekend of the 24th and 25th July. There will be 14 gardens to see, with eight of them in the city of Brighton & Hove; three of them are new to the trail too. If you want to venture out of the city, there is a further one in Telscombe, four in Seaford and one in Alfriston. Brighton locations include South Avenue, East Drive, Rugby Road and the Stanford & Cleveland Community Garden.

Geoff’s work, fundraising for Macmillan Cancer Support through the trail and other activities in and around his own garden, Driftwood in Seaford, has now enabled him to hand over more than £86,000 to the charity, all of which has gone to the Macmillan Horizon Centre in the city. All charities suffered greatly throughout the pandemic, Macmillan Cancer Support included, so why not get out and support them while improving your own mental health and having a great day out in some wonderful gardens too - a perfect escape from the last 12 months. Dogs on leads allowed in all gardens too! This year, many of the gardens will be serving tea and cake and some have art and plants for sale too. Tickets are £8 for a day ticket on either Saturday or Sunday, purchased in the first garden visited, with children free. There will be an online facility to purchase day tickets via the website

57 News of a free local dance festival...

Dance like everybody’s watching! Booking opens for this year’s free dance festival Our City Dances...Beginners breaking workshops, an online disco party, and an invitation to join Brighton-seafront regular Lya, aka BLK Diamond Dance, to dance like everybody’s watching are all part of the line-up at this year’s free celebration of all things dance, Our City Dances. The annual flagship event by Brighton & Hove based dance charity South East Dance is returning to the city after a year’s break due to the pandemic, and for the last time before its brand-new home for dance The Dance Space opens in Circus Street in Spring 2022.

GENERAL

This year, Our City Dances will take place from Monday 19-Saturday 24 July, online and at outdoor locations around The Dance Space. Whilst some events have been designed specifically for community partners such as Puffin Community Nursery and Brooke Mead Extra Care Facility, others will be free and bookable for everyone, including: • Dance Like Everybody’s Watching – an invitation to join dancer Lya in a free outdoor dance workshop, which encourages participants to reclaim the streets and assert their right to feel safe, expressive and beautiful through movement. • Join local arts organisations Carousel and Parable Dance, who support people with learning disabilities to lead creative lives, in an online disco dance party – everyone welcomed to take part. • The Beginners Guide to Breaking – an introductory workshop for young people aged 7-11 and their families. From toprock to six-step, hip-hop dance artist and producer Jamaal O’Driscoll will walk participants through some key breaking principles - no head-spins required! Our City Dances launched in 2018 to encourage more people across the city to have a go at dance in advance of the launch of The Dance Space, a place that its creators - local arts charity South East Dance - hope will become the heart of all things dance in the city. Over a decade in the making, The Dance Space features state-of-the-art studios, a 123-seat performance space, and a floor of

meeting rooms and office space to hire. When it opens next year, it will bring together professional dance artists and people of all ages and abilities to create, enjoy and experience dance. Our City Dances is curated by a Community Steering Group made up of people who live or have a relationship with the Tarner area where The Dance Space is located. Lauren Proto, Creative Communities Manager at South East Dance, has been working alongside the group: “Our City Dances is free and for everybody – whether you’re eight or 80 years old; watching from the sidelines or getting stuck in,” she says. “With events online and outdoors, and featuring everything from South Asian dance to breaking, we want to challenge people’s perceptions of what dance is and who can do it.” For a full line up and to book free tickets visit www.southeastdance.org.uk

Brighton Male Voice Choir Would you like to learn how to sing in a choir, or do you need to build up your singing confidence? The benefits of singing are well known, so why not come along and give it a try, with Brighton Male Voice Choir. We are a social, non-religious, community choir and we welcome men over the age of 18 who enjoy singing in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Brighton Male Voice Choir was formed in 1926, during the years following the depression. The original members were mainly recruited from the Welsh mining community who came to Brighton to work on the new sea defences, between Black Rock and Rottingdean. The choir has been singing in many forms since. After the war, the choir re-formed with weekly rehearsals held above Rosslyn’s Store in the London Road, Brighton, a draper’s shop, now long gone, and the present site of what used to be the Woolworths store.

63 An event for people of all abilities…

Brighton Yoga and Wellbeing Festival Yogis of all levels and abilities will unite this summer at the Brighton Yoga and Wellbeing Festival.

Running over the weekend of 24th and 25th July, the first day of the festival will be live and in person at Cardinal Newman School, and the second day will be online. And it’s not just for experienced yogis the event is open to people of all abilities, experiences and backgrounds with special taster classes for those who have not tried yoga before. The festival was launched in 2014 and is run by the Brighton Yoga Foundation - a registered charity. But its reach goes far beyond the weekend itself. The personal benefits of yoga are well-documented. Regular practice improves stress, sleep, strength and flexibility, and many of us turned to our mats to strengthen bodies and calm minds to cope with the stresses of lockdown. But there is an increasing awareness that it can also be a powerful tool for social change. At the Brighton Yoga Foundation, we believe that yoga has the ability to transform lives - enabling people who have been through trauma to reconnect with their bodies and society. Our teachers reach out to people with mental health problems, stressed teenagers and those who have experienced domestic violence and offer free classes to those who can’t afford

them. We also provide classes for those in stressful jobs such as the police force and the NHS. Our classes are safe and inclusive, and we are committed to breaking down the barriers that mean yoga is often inaccessible to those who need it most. These obstacles include cost, lack of information and the perception that yoga is only for able-bodied people. We firmly believe that yoga is for everyone. Festival goers will be asked to pay what they can afford, and proceeds from the event will go towards our important work. It has been a difficult year for everyone, and we hope that the festival will provide a wonderful opportunity for people to relax, reconnect and recharge bodies and minds. An opportunity to stay active in later life…

Lifelong learning with the u3a

Walking tour

If you are no longer in full-time work you have an amazing opportunity to experience new ideas, interests and friendship with your local u3a.

On Saturday 24 July (10.30am) there’s a walking tour through the Montpelier and Clifton Hill area of Brighton called “Special Agent, Suffragettes and Standard-Bearers”.

All across the UK, over 400,000 u3a members are learning, staying active and having fun in later life. It’s local, social, friendly, low-cost and open to all. Brighton and Hove u3a, like over 1,000 others across the country, exists to promote lifelong learning through selfhelp interest groups chosen by members. There are also Monthly Meetings with speakers and coffee mornings where you can get to know people and what’s going on. Join a group to learn French, Spanish or participate in advanced Italian; study art, local history or wine appreciation; join discussion groups devoted to poetry, books or film, there’s also photography and community gardening or join one of our five walking groups; you can choose from over 60 other groups you’ll find on our website: http://www.brightonandhoveu3a.org . Contact us (contact@brightonandhoveu3a.org) or come along to our Open Day at St George’s Church in Kemp Town at 12 noon on Saturday 24 July. There you can speak to group leaders and sign up to pursue your existing interests - or discover new ones.

During the walk, you will meet a true war hero: an agent with Britain’s Special Operations Executive who operated clandestinely in German-occupied France during WW2. You will be introduced to members of the suffrage movement and explore their campaign and activities; and meet some pioneering women, standard-bearers in their chosen fields some of the remarkable women from Brighton’s past who have helped to shape our lives today. The tour is circular; it starts from outside Wykeham Terrace (BN1 3FF) and finishes in nearby Victoria Road, Brighton (BN1 3FS). £10/person, booking is essential and payment is contactless either via PayPal or bank transfer. Please reserve your place - contact 07414 681197 or sussextours@sky.com
