4 A famous elm from Preston Park is to be given new life in Kemp Town’s Secret Garden…

Preston Twin given new life in Kemp Town One of the Preston Twins has been saved by Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, Brighton & Hove City Council and The Secret Garden Kemp Town. In 2019 the magnificent elm tree in Preston Park had to be felled due to elm disease. In May the tree, which is five metres high, was moved from Waterhall Sports Ground and positioned in the Secret Garden in Bristol Gardens, Kemp Town.

The Preston Twins, considered to be two of the largest and oldest elms in the world, were planted around 1613. Until 2019, the last of their kind, they stood majestically together, having avoided contamination by elm disease through the stringent control measures adopted by

A storm in 2017 exposed a hollow trunk in one of the ‘twins’, and thereafter the disease spread within. In 2019, the council had no option but to fell the tree but they were determined not to lose this national treasure.

transported to Waterhall Sports Ground for temporary storage. He approached the acclaimed sculptor, Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva, who de-barks and chars dead elm trees (an ancient Japanese process called Yakisugi) which she then gilds, to convert them into sculptures of breath-taking beauty. Many visitors will have admired her gilded elm at Nymans garden. Elpida agreed that she might be able to give the tree new ‘life’, so that it could eventually be reunited with its remaining twin in Preston Park as a major artwork. But she needed a large space to complete the work, so she approached Gavin Henderson, Chair of the Secret Garden Kemp Town, for which she is already creating a new piece for a major exhibition in spring 2022. This unique garden is spacious, enclosed and secure, and Gavin was delighted for Elpida to work on the elm here. The sculpture will be completed in time for next year’s exhibition, where it will be an exciting addition. Once this show has

ended, it is intended that the piece will go directly to Preston Park. During summer 2021, there will be special openings of the Secret Garden so that visitors can see Elpida at work. The garden is the perfect backdrop for artworks. Visitors of all ages are welcome. Entry is free and the garden is accessible for wheelchairs. Girls Group is a wonderful and inclusive space for autistic girls (and their parents) to relax in an autism-friendly environment and interact as much, or as little, as they wish. The Kemptown Girls Group is a place where autistic girls can meet up with others to socialise, make friends and have some fun! We started in October 2020, but with the various lockdowns, we’re still quite a new group.

We do all sorts of activities, from arts and crafts to outdoor games, slime making, hula-hooping, yoga, Lego and, as the weather gets nicer, hopefully some outings, too. Activities are mainly aimed at primary-school aged girls, but if younger or older ones would enjoy it, they are very welcome too. The group meets every Thursday during term time, after school, at The Manor Gym, Manor Road, BN2 5EA. We would appreciate a voluntary donation of £3 per child, (or £5 for two children) towards the hire cost but if that’s a struggle, please do come along anyway. The group is open to girls with an autism diagnosis or those who are going through, or thinking of embarking on, the diagnostic process.

Kemptown news…

An apology from Brighton & Hove City Council…

Brighton Fringe in Kemptown

The Green Wall We’d like to apologise to our residents for the way we went about cutting back the stretch of Green Wall at the bottom of Duke’s Mound in March.

Brighton Fringe is now up and running until 27 June and there are plenty of events in the Kemptown area. At the New Steine Hotel, there’s solo cabaret with Dressing Up Dietrich. At Le Village you can see Princess Scissors in LEGS, a post-pop musical exploration, or hear queer comedian Ross Kamp’s most intimate dating stories, while at The Curzon in Rock Street there’s a fusion of cabaret and theatre in Topsie Redfern’s Crystal Balls.

Dressing Up Dietrich is at The New Steine Hotel

For something a bit more mellow, Geoff Robb’s The Music of Trees is an evening of magical storytelling and virtuoso guitar at St Mary’s Church; and neo-classical electronic composer King Jamsheed will be livestreaming from St George’s Church. The Lantern in Rock Place will be staging three plays. Tickets and more information at brightonfringe.org.

The Green Wall at Duke’s Mound before it was cut back; photo from Google

It should not have been cut down in this way. We are very sorry about this, and an investigation is underway to find out how this happened. As part of the Black Rock regeneration project a road safety audit was carried out. This found that the greenery limited visibility and may result in collisions between vehicles and pedestrians. The cutting back of the greenery was not raised with councillors. It was arranged by council staff as an operational requirement, stemming from the road safety audit. Councillors have requested an urgent review into how the excessive cut-back happened, what lessons need to be learnt from it, and what work is being done to re-establish the greenery. Officers will report back to councillors on this as soon as possible. We recognise that we should have engaged with Brighton & Hove Building Green when it became clear that this vegetation needed to be cut back. We have spoken to them to apologise and ensure further engagement in future, and we are grateful for their involvement. We would emphasise that although there are plans to build a cycle lane here, the recommendations of the road safety audit were made in relation to pedestrian safety with regard to traffic in general and nothing to do with the cycle lane in particular.

10 Meet a former ballerina who now runs her own dancing school…

Queen’s Park person…Clair Thomas Clair Thomas lives in Queen’s Park. She is a former professional ballet dancer who now runs Ballet Brighton, teaching classical ballet for all ages. How long have you lived in the Queen’s Park area? I moved with my family to Baker’s Bottom in 2014. What do you enjoy about ballet? Ballet is a language of movement that always came naturally to me. The discipline of ballet training is incredibly structured, detailed, physically challenging and rich in artistry and musicality. Beyond the technique, ballet is essentially expression through movement to music. I loved best the magical moments on stage, when the technique long practised in the studio came to life and was set free, to a live orchestra. Ballet was my calling; fortunate enough to have enjoyed a professional career as a ballerina, it now feels like an honour to pass on that knowledge and experience to my students.

Why did you start your own ballet school?

As a freelance ballet teacher I found myself correcting bad habits from poor training. 12 News from Labour councillor Amanda Evans…

Councillor News for Queen’s Park While there is much positive work going on in and around Queen’s Park ward, as ever – examples include the successful campaign waged by residents along with my colleague Nick Childs to keep the historic Princes Street pedestrianised, as well as the gathering pace of plans to start restoring the first tranche of Madeira Terraces arches – our postbags continue to be dominated by the problems of drug-related anti-social behaviour in pretty much every corner of the area. The irony of how pernicious the problem is in a ward which contains the largest police presence in the city isn’t lost on either the council or Sussex police and – whilst most of us know what complicated issues drug abuse and the crime surrounding it are, and that addicts are often victims too – we are very aware of the misery it causes to residents confronted with the realities on a daily basis. Those realities include barely concealed dealing and use at all times of the day and night, intimidating behaviour, and the regular sight of over-imbibers in alarming states of semi-or-un-consciousness, as well as discarded paraphernalia – cans, foil, needles – left lying around, potentially causing great harm to children and animals. Recently, the problems have been particularly concentrated around the Tarner Park and Carlton Hill School bit of the ward, with both Tarner and school staff having to scour their grounds to find the needles left behind, and despairing at the sights the children in their care are witnessing.

tracks criminal activity with software that can inform further action. We’ll see how it goes, and it’s all-too easy to be cynical given such an intractable problem, with root causes that are hard to fix at a local level, but I’ll finish on a plea to keep reporting where you see anti-social activity happening here or anywhere in the ward. Report to Sussex Police on either the emergency (999) or non-emergency (101) line depending on how serious what you are witnessing is, and to us: Amanda.evans@brighton-hove.gov.uk, Nick.childs@brighton-hove.gov.uk, communitysafety.casework@ brighton-hove.gov.uk . It may feel like your reports go unheard, or that the police are often just too busy to attend, but the data is always collected and collated, and it’s only if good citizens keep reporting that the authorities can direct the allocation of scarce resources where they are most needed. Cllr Amanda Evans

So, a raft of measures are planned to try to tackle the immediate problems, including ensuring the gates to the park are locked overnight, applying anti-climb paint to various external access points, cutting back some foliage providing ‘hidey-holes’ for deals, installing CCTV and trialling new Artificial Intelligence equipment that To advertise to 3000 QUEENS PARK homes and 12,000 across Brighton call 01273 551021

15 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Anti-Social Behaviour, or ASB, the more sanitised acronym favoured by politicians and the police, is my focus this month, writes Geoffrey Bowden, chair of the Friends of Queen’s Park. An almost throw-away line from one of our newly appointed local Police Community Support Officers, who had been invited to join a Friends committee meeting to introduce himself, is the starting point for this article. The plan had been for a quick ‘how do you do’ to put a name to a face, but, to let everyone know that he’d already hit the ground running, he announced, “In a recent sweep of the park 29 used needles were found.” It was quite a show stopper – especially for committee members with small children or grandchildren who delight in being able to let them run free in the park. By all accounts a find of 29 needles is low by comparison to some other areas in the city, but serious enough for the committee to organise a community safety meeting to hear from law enforcement and other agencies how they propose dealing with this particular kind of ASB. Drug dealing and taking in and around Queen’s Park is not new, nor is it confined to our local park. In 2013, prompted by MP Caroline Lucas, an independent Drugs Commission for Brighton & Hove was established to look at various aspects of the problem. Fast forward to 2021 the Council has set aside funding in its 2021/22 budget to organise a drugs summit to look again at effective strategies. Newly re-elected Police Commissioner Katy Bourne has pledged to continue to provide the Council with £265,000 each year for its drugs intervention programmes and community safety work.

In the meantime, our local PCSOs, working alongside Cityclean, will continue to undertake periodic sweeps of the park to remove used drug detritus. Heat maps will inform officers where they should focus their patrols, while intelligence is being deployed to disrupt the county lines dealers. Ideas such as better lighting or increased patrols have significant cost implications, while the provision of sharps bins for used needles could be seen as a tacit encouragement for injectors to use the park. So what we’ve learned is that there are no easy answers but we can keep reporting needle finds to the Council, which aims to remove them within 24 hours, discreetly take note of number plates of cars you suspect are being used by dealers and report them using the 101 non-emergency number.

23 Councillor news from Elaine Hills, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News... Being a councillor is a privilege and also means a busy life, particularly when you have another job too! Below is a summary of a few things I’ve been involved with recently.

Many residents have told me they would like to be able to recycle plastic pots, tubs and trays, and to have food waste collected by the council. I’m pleased to say that both are currently being explored and look likely in the near future. A lot of people were upset recently when the owners of the racecourse fenced off routes that many residents use regularly. Suddenly, journeys across the area became either impossible or more difficult and less safe. Cllr David Gibson and I asked council officers to negotiate the restoration of these routes and I worked with local residents on a map showing where access points are needed. Estates staff met with racecourse managers and pedestrian access has thankfully been restored at a number of these points. While the majority of children in the ward received a place at a secondary school of their choice for September, I was sorry that this was not true for all. Local schools Dorothy Stringer and Varndean were unable to accommodate more than their published intake number and both schools proved to be very popular. Parents were invited

HANOVER

I’ve been working with staff at local schools on a Hanover and Tarner Liveable Neighbourhood project. Pupils were asked to create a poster of their “Dream Street” and came up with some very imaginative ideas, from streets filled with flower beds and trees to brightly coloured roads with car-free play areas. The posters will go on display at Jubilee Library between 13 and 26 September. Picture of her dream street by Edie in Year 4 at Elm Grove Primary School

to meet with councillors and council staff to discuss their situations, and families have been given extra support from the Schools Wellbeing Service. We’re trying to learn from this, and a report is coming to the next Children, Young People and Skills committee. The number of children affected across the city had dropped and is likely to decrease further after the appeals process. If anyone has been affected and needs support, please contact me. Finally, I chair the Corporate Parenting Board, which meets every three months to talk about issues relating to looked-after children and young adults who have left the care system. Young people will be involved in shaping the agenda and taking over part of the next meeting, so they’ll be able to highlight the issues that matter most to them. It’ll be a chance for councillors and council staff to listen and find out what really matters to these young people. elaine.hills@brighton-hove.gov.uk

27 Hanover news…

As part of Brighton Artists Open Houses, Hanover Arts Trail will be running a fun trail to get kids crafting! Don’t let having a young family put you off from visiting the local Artists Open Houses this May and June. To keep little hands occupied the houses of Hanover will be running a mini craft trail. Just visit the four venues on the Hanover Arts Trail and collect a craft item from each one. When you have been to them all you will have everything you need to make a fun craft! This should leave parents free to explore the arts and crafts on display and will also hopefully inspire young minds to get creative themselves.

29 A new Cafe/Bistro at 135a Islingword Road, Hanover that has kept going despite a challenging start...

Keeping it in the family…

HANOVER

Susanna always had the dream of having a café with her daughter Laurelle so when they opened La Famille in early March 2020 it was literally a dream come true!!

However, the mother and daughter team couldn’t have been more unfortunate with the timing of their new venture. Located in what was previously The Mighty Seed Café on Islingword Road the café only managed, due to the Covid outbreak, to be open for three months in the first year…a difficult scenario for any small business but for a new café trying to get a local following a particularly challenging situation. Susanna and Laurelle invited me in to sample their menu . Laurelle is a fully qualified chef, qualifying locally at City College she has an amazing passion for the art of creating delicious food. I was given a detailed account of each item on the menu and how each element had been created right there on site often amounting to a labour of love; the caramelised onions for example take 2 hours to prepare! To demonstrate the food to me I was given a selection of open topped sandwiches, consisting of; whipped goats cheese with charred pears and walnuts / beetroot hummus with smashed confit garlic and rocket and sliced smoked beef / mustard mayonnaise, pickled cucumber and caramelised onions.

This eaterie has its own unique style which can be described as afro Eurocentric, Caribbean, with a passion for organic, healthy ingredients and very big on flavour! The mouth-watering menu is a joy for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike with dishes like : Spicy beans with smashed avocado, tomato salsa and fried dumplings ; and rice and peas and plantain with spicy corn fed jerk chicken served with organic homemade coleslaw. There are also familiar cuisine like their signature house burgers and French fries all made from scratch. I can honestly say that it was like eating top cuisine in a laid back, friendly café setting …very impressive! The café has now evolved into a bistro and recently changed its opening hours to take in the evenings and has applied for an alcohol licence so represents a lovely place not only for lunch but also for a pleasant evening out. There is outside eating space and also the best ingredient any bistro needs apart from amazing food – friendly welcoming staff Overcoming all sorts of barriers and complications to keep the dream alive and the show on the road I would highly recommend trying out La Famille and adding it to your list of regular eateries!

32 Coachwerks are on the Fiveways trail as part of the Brighton Artist’s Open Houses 2021…

Open Studios at Coachwerks We will be open at the weekends (Saturday 29th May - Sunday 20th June, 11am - 5pm) for you to come along and enjoy the work of local and resident artists-makers. There are 13 of us this time round, all connected to Coachwerks in some way, whether as a resident artist or as a friend to Coachwerks. We have a wide variety of work on show – handcarved spoons by Annie Slack; handcrafted stoneware pottery by Rachel Entwistle; paintings by Sandy Infield; lino prints by Heather Parr; stoneware mugs and pieces by Louise Kelly Pottery; wooden sculptural assemblages by Made In Shed; stone and ceramic sculptures by Alison McGechie; foil-printed purses by Sal Goodyer; ceramic bead jewellery by Orangecat; bath salts and more by The Nurtured Life; copper art by Paul Hounsell; smoke-fired vessels by Chalk & Flint Ceramics; wall sculptures by David J Batchelor. All of this will be accompanied by the delicious plant-based Mexican cuisine by Bendito Maiz. There will be fifteen houses/studios on the Fiveways trail this year; Coachwerks will be number 15. The Fiveways Artists Group is celebrating its fortieth anniversary and has a rich and interesting history: it was set up in 1981 by artist Ned Hoskins, who pioneered the idea of opening houses as galleries during the Brighton Festival. Now, 40 years later, that idea has grown from a handful of venues to the current AOH Festival that spans Brighton, Hove and beyond. Make sure you pick up your copy of the shiny, celebratory Fiveways trail guide which will guide you

35 A post-lockdown poem from a Fiveways resident…

The Favelas of Fiveways It started with Lockdown, with ‘Stay Home’ and ‘Furlough’ We couldn’t go out and the office a ‘No Show’ The frantic and broke must now work from home But where’s there the space and a quietness zone? It won’t last forever were all of our hopes Weeks on left us all at the end of our ropes Squashed in together in houses quite small

Crammed in and desperate for personal room Computers and workspace and sessions on Zoom Those lucky enough to have gardens to use Were much better off - if they had a short fuse The summer that year was thankfully kind And for several months, the sun often shined But as Covid continued for week after week The autumn and winter proved dismally bleak As the year faded out, we’d all had enough Lack of freedom and space was terribly tough So another pandemic we hadn’t expected In many a garden, huge sheds were erected A contagion of work-rooms was suddenly born As the smallest of gardens then gave up its lawn And the workmen arrived with their hammers and drills The landscape dramatically changed in these hills From my upstairs window, the views now for me Are of sheds and flat rooftops laid out in a sea Of home-office buildings all close-knit and cluttered Like the outskirts of Brazilian Favelas I muttered Kim Lane

37 News from Green councillor Amy Heley…

Councillor news forPreston Park ward These included the welfare of the animals in the pond, the damage to the grass in the rose garden, graffiti and litter in the park, as well as plans for more tree planting. We are working with the Friends of Preston Park group to make sure we see improvements in these areas, including better signage to protect the wildlife around the pond. We have been helping residents liaise with Network Rail over some of their maintenance work, and urged them to improve their communications. There is work happening at the Lovers Walk depot which affects residents on Hamilton Road, as well as the Hove Cutting works which impacts residents of York Villas and Howard Terrace. It’s vital that large organisations like Network Rail communicate properly with the local communities and their representatives, and we hope we will see improvements with this in the future. The Preston Park LAT (local action team) is up and running in the ward. The LAT is led by local residents and hold monthly meetings to discuss local issues, which have recently focussed on crime in our local parks. Please get in touch if you’d like to get involved.

ning both morning and afternoon closures of Grantham Road. The scheme prevents the road being used as a rat run during drop off and pick up times, improves air quality, encourages sustainable transport and makes the road a more pleasant environment for the children, parents and school staff. The scheme is recruiting for volunteers, so if you’re interested in helping out please contact us. We are aware of our residents’ ongoing concerns about the need for the council to increase what can be collected for recycling. As Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee I am making this a priority: we are currently looking at how to retrofit our recycling facilities to be able to collect pots, tubs and trays, and in June we will be considering options for introducing a food waste collection service. 43 This article is by Anja Ashton of Language Garden…

Five essentials to raising a bilingual child If you’ve thought about raising your child bilingually, but find the prospect daunting, or have previously tried and given up, then this article is for you. No matter what age your child, by following these five steps, you should be able to give them the wonderful gift of a second language. 1. Define your goals Ask yourself what you want for your child. Would you like them to simply understand the second language, or be able to speak it, or read and write it, or ultimately to achieve a qualification that will allow them to work in the country of the second language? With a bit of research, you can usually find a good range of resources. Every major language has a wide spectrum of learning materials from books and DVDs to educational software and apps. Once you’ve done your research, plan a weekly schedule with daily manageable activities. A Zoom call with relatives can be as valuable as more formal learning. 3. Maximise human exposure There’s no substitute for interacting with people who speak the second language. Indeed, without such interaction children don’t reach the comfort level that enables them to willingly use the language. 4. Activity based learning is king

5. Build a bilingual community When your child enters an English-speaking school, it is inevitable that English will become their stronger language, even if they continues to speak the second language at home. However, she can still progress in the second language if you continue to speak it to them. It will also make it much easier for them to learn new languages. Being a German mum in Brighton, it was very important to me that my children grew up bilingual. Back in 2014 I set up a small German kindergarten from our family home in Kemptown to create a community of families and children. Seven years on, we run a thriving pre-school setting at Falmer’s beautiful village hall. The children learn the language through creative play and adventures out in nature.

Children learn by doing, so any activity that uses their senses will enhance their learning. Using gestures helps them to learn the meanings of new words. So, for example, if you’re making pancakes, invite your child to get out the milk from the For more information contact Anja Ashton fridge, pour it in the bowl, count the eggs, on 07930 494822 or email mix in the flour and smell the vanilla sugar. info@language-garden.co.uk. 46 There’s a Comedy Festival this month at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park…

June at Brighton Open Air Theatre June at the Brighton Open Air Theatre brings a Comedy Festival, with performances from a host of household names, including Stephen K Amos, Sara Pascoe, Marcus Brigstocke and The Noise Next Door. Mark Steel will be going head to head with his son Elliot Steel for a Sunday afternoon not to be missed. For children, there’s a production of David Walliams’ best-seller “Mr Stink”; and a brand new musical adaptation of “The Further Adventures of Doctor Dolittle” by Illyria, which features a fully orchestrated score, amazing puppets and a plethora of songs that you’ll be singing along to for years to come. “The Ugly Duckling” is a lovely new ballet for the whole family. With crystal-clear story-telling, larger than life characters and gorgeous costumes, it tackles themes of social acceptance and liking yourself in a child-friendly, charming manner.

Theatre this month includes Noel Coward’s timeless classic “Blithe Spirit”; “The Government Inspector”, a comedy of errors by Nikolai Gogol, performed by Year 12 students from Newman Drama Academy; and a humorous adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” by The Pantaloons. “The Bench” is a hilarious tale of an epic conflict over a public bench; and “Estella” is a ground-breaking, imaginative and vibrant adaptation of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations, led by a band of three actor musicians. “Lord God” is a new musical comedy by Philip Reeve and Brian Mitchell, whose previous collaborations include “Pugs of the Frozen North” and “The Ministry of Biscuits”. Building on their reputation for thought-provoking comedy, Lord God takes a timely look at morality, faith, and why sometimes it is best not to take things too seriously. To celebrate the Summer Solstice, Brighton’s own maverick guitarist, composer and ukulele virtuoso Richard Durrant will be returning with his trademark blend of original music, British-flavoured folk, JS Bach and plenty of tales from the road, in his first appearance in front of a live crowd this year. 49 YMCA DownsLink Group want to raise awareness of child criminal exploitation in the city…

WiSE up to criminal exploitation Have you ever thought about how drugs arrive in and move around our city? Did you know that children are used by organised crime groups to transport, store and distribute drugs and the profits of drugs, within Brighton and Hove, and across the country?

The new social media campaign, WiSE Up to Exploitation, has been devised by YMCA WiSE alongside a group of Brighton University student volunteers. It aims to raise awareness of child criminal exploitation and its links to drugs in Brighton and Hove. The campaign hopes to start conversations about recreational drug use in Brighton and Hove and the impact on children and young people who are exploited. Project worker Magdalene Mill explains: “Child criminal exploitation is a type of abuse where children are targeted, often through social media platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram; they are then groomed and coerced into committing criminal acts. On the surface it may

appear that children who are criminally exploited have made a freely given choice; however, among other tactics, intimidation, violence, sexual violence, debt bondage and weapons have been used to manipulate them to commit crimes.” Hove MP Peter Kyle, who is also Shadow Minister for Victims and Youth Justice, is backing the campaign. He says: “Consuming illicit drugs isn’t a pain-free choice. When someone orders their fix, they set off a chain of processes with exploitation at its heart. Young people are coerced to travel long distances, putting themselves in mortal danger and held in modern slavery to exploitative drug gangs. These gangs hold vulnerable young people in debt bondage, often threatening to injure or kill loved ones unless the victims do as they say. Tackling child criminal exploitation is at the heart of my ambitions as MP for Hove, and Labour’s Shadow Minister for Victims and Youth Justice.” To find out what you can do to help or how to spot the signs that someone you know may be being exploited, visit ymcadlg.org/wise-up-to-exploitation and follow @ymcawise on all social media platforms.

GENERAL

This activity, known as Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE), has increased markedly over the last two years and Brighton is the top target of county lines dealers according to a new report from London City Hall, with vulnerable children as young as 10 being targeted. A new campaign, WiSE Up To Exploitation, is being launched by YMCA DownsLink Group, via its dedicated project leading on both child sexual exploitation and criminal exploitation, YMCA WiSE, to raise awareness of the issue.

50 Kate Elms looks back at the Withdean Tennis Centre…

Local history... Tennis at Withdean For tennis fans, the month of June means only one thing, the start of the Wimbledon Championships. At the time of writing, we can’t be certain that the world’s top players will in fact be heading to South London later this month, but we can always dip into The Keep’s photographic collections in search of local tennis inspiration.

Photograph from The Argus archive, ref ARG/3/2695

This photograph from The Argus archive was taken at Withdean Tennis Centre on 12 September 1942. The centre was developed by the Lawn Tennis Association on the site of Marshall’s Playing Fields, named after the former headmaster of Brighton Grammar School. Officially opened by Lord Gage in April 1937, it featured 11 hard courts and 10 grass courts (with their own irrigation system),

plus a clubhouse and grandstand seating 2,000 people. Known as ‘the new Wimbledon’, Withdean’s status as an elite sporting venue seemed assured when, in May 1939, it hosted the Davis Cup tie between Great Britain and New Zealand (won by GB by three matches to two). But the outbreak of war intervened and, for a time, the centre was used as a mortuary and no tennis was played.

The match shown in this image was part of a fund-raising event held in aid of the Red Cross. According to a report published in The Argus, ‘a crowd of more than 1,200 enthusiasts took their places around the centre court at the Withdean Tennis Ground, Brighton, on Saturday afternoon to enjoy the rare wartime privilege of watching four hours of first-class tennis played by some of the country’s leading players.’ These included one of Britain’s top female tennis stars, Miss Kay Stammers, who played in both the Ladies and Mixed Doubles, and was reported to be ‘on the top of her form’. Stammers, a Wimbledon doubles champion in 1935 and 1936, was known for playing exhibition matches on behalf of the Red Cross, and served as an ambulance driver during the war.

53 Advertorial...a fabulous new creative business...

Let’s Party!

Kate has been in the events industry for fifteen years, creating high end, one-off parties, mainly in the corporate world. When the pandemic hit, she decided to take a pause and consider how to use her experience and passions to develop something new and exciting for the future.

Everything was bright pink, orange and gold and plants absolutely everywhere. To top off, we put a thousand meringues on the top table.. In the kids version they drink out of golden pineapples and have safari hampers full of midnight feast goodies.

This Morning I...

“2020 necessitated a huge shakeup for the events industry. While lots of my friends and colleagues have turned their talents to creating fantastic virtual events, my love of the party overtook me. Bells & Whistles is the result and I am so proud of the incredible experiences we are launching. We’re determined to provide adventure, joy and a sprinkle of magic and I cannot wait to see the parties in full swing!”

‘‘...woke up to my little one wanting to fly a kite. We went out to the local park and ran around trying to get it in the air. When you’re a mum you want as much quality time as possible with your small people, even when it turns out you’re not as good at flying a kite as you’d hope!” What’s the most creative theme you’ve produced? ‘’I’ve been lucky to be involved in a lot of ambitious productions, but one that stands out from recently is a beautifully exotic wedding I helped style at the Dome in Brighton. It really inspired me to create the Tropical Safari theme for Bells & Whistles. We put together a huge topiary elephant and birds of paradise on trapeze.

Why Children’s Parties?

Kate lives in Brighton with her young daughter, Aurelia, and her musician husband. Check the website for sleepover party ideas or send Kate an email. kate@bellsandwhistlesparties.co.uk www.bellsandwhistlesparties.co.uk Follow on Insta: @bellsandwhistles_parties

55 Meet an award-winning local film maker…

Brighton-based documentary maker… Phil Grabsky Phil Grabsky is a multi award-winning Brighton-based documentary maker. One film released recently to DVD is about painter Frida Kahlo. How did you start?

Phil on the set of “Heavy Water: A Film for Chernobyl”

I’ve been making documentaries for 35 years. We began with history films, I Caesar (for the BBC) and The Great Commanders (for Channel 4). About twenty years ago we started making art films and, to date, we have made over 200. Frida was made for our cinema series Exhibition On Screen. We release five films a year to cinemas around the world. When we started EOS, it was always our intention to look as broadly as we could in terms of chronology, geography and gender. Frida Kahlo is arguably the world’s favourite female artist. And her face is very well known. But her biography and life much less so. When you think about it, she is a Mexican, disabled, transgressive artist that overcame all sorts of hurdles to become not only an extraordinary artist but also an extraordinary woman. It is a gripping story – and her art warrants our attention. Tell us about some of your other films… Other films include Making War Horse, In Search of Mozart, In Search of Beethoven, history films with Terry Jones, and many more. Right now we are about to complete a twenty year project about a young boy called Mir growing up in Afghanistan.

Landscaping

It is called My Childhood, My Country - 20 Years in Afghanistan and, I must say, it is really quite something. Who are your favourite artists? The reason that these artists are considered great is that, even after hundreds of years, they still have the power to move us, inform us, and excite us. Picking any particular favourite is difficult. That said Monet, Raphael, Van Gogh and Cézanne would be in my top 10. What are you working on now? We are just now releasing a film about Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. The next film, due in September, is a super film about Raphael. In all our art films, we encourage the audience to not be afraid of art. Art surrounds us and there are no stupid questions. Just be inquisitive. It’s easy to glance and move away but actually the more you look the more you see. 63 Brighton entertainment…

News from the council…

Comedy Nights Pride Festival Following on from the sell-out cancelled show with German Comedy Am-

Reginald D Hunter

On Thursday 3rd we have the hilarious and delightful Cally Beaton (as seen on QI) headlining, followed by ITV Chaser Paul ‘The Sinnerman’ Sinha on Thursday 10th and, on June 24th, the amazing Reginald D Hunter. All of these amazing comedians will be supported by many brilliant acts from Brighton and all around the UK circuit. But it’s not all just comedy! On 5th and 6th acclaimed Scottish children’s author Stuart Reid performs stories from one of his many amazing books and on the 15th we have a number of Brighton’s best burlesque and musical acts joining comedians at our first cabaret special. Keep your eyes peeled for even more top acts and entertainment at this new theatre space in a vibrant pub which is under new management. Tickets available through Eventbrite. For details: Ruby Pub, Hotel Kitchens & Venue, Coldean on Facebook or call Nik on 07734 648588.

Sadly, Pride have announced the cancellation of Brighton & Hove Pride’s Community Parade, Pride Village Party and Pride Festival due to take place on Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 August 2021. The events are being cancelled due to the continuing complexities and uncertainties involved in running such large multiple events across the city safely. Pride are still planning to run smaller Covid-safe in-person satellite community and pop-up cultural events throughout the summer and autumn, as well as online events.

Prince Regent Swimming Complex The council are working hard to carry out extensive repairs to the electrical system at the Prince Regent Swimming Complex, but they were not able to re-open the pool on 17 May as they had hoped. Flooding over Easter caused significant damage to the electrical system in the building. It is expected that the complex will reopen by the end of June. In the meantime, alternative swimming facilities are available at the King Alfred Leisure Centre and St Luke’s swimming pool.

65 The Friends of Saint Paul’s would love new members to help conserve this magnificent building…

Saint Paul’s Church in West Street “Hidden in plain sight” and the oldest surviving building in West Street is Saint Paul’s Church, a Gothic Revival treasure and also a living parish community, its lantern tower visible from many places in our city.

In Queen Victoria’s day, the services were famous, even notorious, for their music and ceremonial. They attracted not only fashionable visitors, but also protesters against Anglo-Catholic ritualism, and were nicknamed “the Sunday Opera”. Fame increased when one of the curates was imprisoned under the “Public Worship Regulation Act” (Father Richard Enraght, remembered with his name on a Brighton bus). Father Wagner also encouraged local fishermen to attend and had the “Fishermen’s Vestry” built; it is still used socially today.

And for devotees of stained glass there are wonderful windows by Pugin, interior designer of the Houses of Parliament, one of his only (almost) complete design sets in England. To this day Saint Paul’s is also a centre of musical excellence with a fine choir singing Mass settings by composers such as Palestrina, Byrd, Haydn and Mozart every Sunday at 11am - one of the only places in Brighton and Hove maintaining this tradition. The Friends of Saint Paul’s is a charitable body whose aim is to help conserve this

magnificent building as a haven of calm, beauty and history in the centre of Brighton. Once pandemic restrictions are fully lifted and the path forward is clear, we plan to resume our programme of social and cultural events such as talks, concerts, quiz nights and outings. We have seen a big increase in membership in the last year, but even more support is always welcome. So, we invite people of all faiths, and none, who care about Brighton’s cityscape and history (we are not a specifically religious organisation) to join us, with a modest subscription annually for 2021 of £15 for an individual or £20 for a couple. (We also offer individual life membership for £150 or joint for £200.) Further details can be found by visiting our website http:// www.friendsofstpaulsbrighton.co.uk/ Apart from Mass times – at the moment four times a week – Saint Paul’s is (in normal times) open for visitors during the Brighton Festival, in the summer and over Christmas. 71 News from the council…

Be a low impact traveller this summer and explore the glorious coast and countryside by bike.

The Living Coast by Bike: Conquering the Scarp

You can now visit the South Downs, towns and coast of Brighton & Hove collectively known as The Living Coast, the UK’s only urban UNESCO World Biosphere Region, by bike. To encourage more people to explore sustainably and connect with nature Brighton & Hove City Council worked with So Sussex to create a selection of cycle routes that highlight some of our unique habitats, species and cultural heritage. With routes that pass some of the most iconic local environmental landmarks, “The Living Coast by Bike” provides an excellent way to discover the region. The Living Coast by Bike website (thelivingcoastbybike. co.uk) offers a variety of cycle routes around the region with a range of difficulty by colour, from a green route that can be easily enjoyed by a family, to red routes which will challenge even the keenest of cyclists - there is something for everyone. The website is free to use and each route is available to download providing logistical information, and includes an overview of some of the natural and cultural heritage to keep your eye out for on the way. Some of the routes can be linked to create a longer journey and they all start and end at train stations, to keep your journey low impact even if you’re travelling from further afield. What are you waiting for? Grab a bike and start exploring the unique natural habitats and landmarks that surround you.

Breeze up to the Downs The city’s Breeze Buses run every weekend to and from the city centre to Stanmer Park, Ditchling Beacon and Devil’s Dyke, making travel even more convenient to some of the most beautiful and picturesque parts of our countryside. Prices on the 77, 78 and 79 Breeze Bus services are just £5 return for adults, with up to two children per adult travelling for free. Concessionary bus pass travel is also free. All types of B&H Buses ‘Saver’ tickets are accepted on the Breeze services. More information on the services, including details of pricing, can be found on the Breeze Buses page: https:// www.brighton-hove.gov. uk/content/ parking-and-travel/ travel-transport-androad-safety/ breeze-downs-0

73 One of the many shows coming to Brighton Fringe…

Twin magicians return home to Brighton Twin brother magic act Kane & Abel will provide an opportunity for people to enjoy live entertainment while making a return to their former hometown of Brighton. The magicians will be performing as part of the Brighton Fringe Festival at The Warren on Friday 4th June at 8.15pm and Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th June at 1.15pm.

The show will mark a welcome return to his former hometown for Kane. He said: “When we first performed at the Brighton Fringe in 2018 I decided I didn’t want to leave. So I didn’t. I moved to Brighton and was in love with living in the city. When the pandemic happened, I was forced to move back to live with my parents in Shropshire. It’ll be great to be back in Brighton for these shows and hopefully, I’ll be able to also start the process of moving back. I’ve missed the thriving live entertainment scene, pubs, cafés, coffee shops, beach and the general vibe.” Abel said: “We have been fortunate enough to perform all over the world, from Adelaide to Rhodes, but there’s something about the Brighton audiences that you don’t get anywhere else. They

We can’t wait to be back in Brighton and experience the whole festival.” Kane & Abel first started performing aged just 15 in Shropshire. They have since performed all over the world at five-star holiday resorts in Greece, Cyprus and Montenegro and arts festivals such as the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Adelaide Fringe. The Warren returns The Warren is back in Victoria Gardens as part of Brighton Fringe.

Concerts at All Saints Church

The multi-venue site – now reconfigured to include two Covid-safe outdoor theatres and four immersive bars - opens on May 27 as part of this year’s eagerly-anticipated Brighton Fringe. More than 70 shows are on offer, spanning comedy, cabaret, theatre and storytelling. Audiences are seated with their own group at a safe distance from others in the auditorium.

Music Theatre 2000 and Showtime Productions are celebrating the long-anticipated coming out of lockdown and a return to theatrical events by presenting a musical double bill at All Saints Church in Hove.

Highlights include alternative comedy stalwart Arthur Smith; the return of Ethiopia’s dazzling Circus Abyssinia, the live adaptation of Julia Donaldson’s beloved children’s book The Snail and The Whale, plus after-hours comedy club The Late Show, which will be playing host to comic powerhouses such as Reginald D Hunter, Zoe Lyons and Paul Sinha.

On Saturday 3rd July there will be two different concerts featuring great talent and glorious voices. In the afternoon, there will be a programme of musical theatre songs and choruses, and, in the evening, a concert of opera highlights. Both concerts are being given in support of The Martlets Hospice. “WHEN YOU BELIEVE” (2.30pm) features music from popular musicals, with a Disney finale. The cast comprises singers who have appeared in the West End and national tours alongside some of the best local talent including the Actually Gay Men’s Chorus. Tickets cost £12.50.

Circus Abyssinia

The Warren at Victoria Gardens runs until July 11, when both theatres will move down to the seafront for The Warren on The Beach, located on Madeira Drive just east of Brighton Palace Pier. An additional programme of comedy, theatre and family shows will then be on offer until 30 August. Find more information at warrenfestival.co.uk.

“A NIGHT AT THE OPERA” (6pm) is an evening of superb singing in a programme of arias, duets and ensembles from some of the most popular operas. Tickets cost £14. Both programmes have been devised by Simon Gray, an experienced producer and musical director. There is a special combined ticket price for both concerts of £22.00 and tickets are available from 01273 555089.
