Community power in Preston Ward

FIVEWAYS

Preston Park & Fiveways Local Action Team (PPFLAT) has just launched in Preston Ward…

Joining the dots and collaborating around local community issues

As a voluntary group we are action focussed and crowd powered – all about getting stuff done, not just talking about it. Voluntary time is limited and highly valuable, so to respect that we are keen to join local dots efficiently and get projects off the ground to create some impact, always being able to draw on the wisdom of our members to make things viable. Who’s involved? Success will be about getting the right mix of people in the room and creating an environment that encourages individuals to step up, take part and achieve some positive change together. The LAT is open to all residents and we are really keen to welcome individuals as well as businesses, third sector organisations, schools, sports clubs, ‘friends’ groups etc. Our three local councillors all take part in meetings, as well as the team of Police Community Support Officers. Partnerships also extend to Brighton and Hove City Council Community Safety Team, youth support services, schools,

council housing and social services, among others. Getting stuff done We hold monthly meetings (still Zooming right now…) to connect members, get updates on what’s happening locally and monitor progress on our project work. We do our very best to keep meetings on time and on agenda and in between these monthly meetings working groups keep projects moving. Our first project is up and running, triggered by a rise in antisocial behaviour in both Blakers and Preston Park. Community safety in our parks is paramount, especially at a time when we value our outdoor green spaces more than ever. Get in touch if you’d like to find out more. Get involved To take part, simply drop a line to ppflat1@ gmail.com and join our online community Slack space – see everything that’s being talked about and get meeting info. www.ppflat.org launches soon!

News from the Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods Unfortunately, the news from us is not good. We had hoped by now to have been running our work sessions again as there’s lots to catch up on.

We were looking forward to bringing back our volunteers in May, albeit socially distancing and abiding by the latest government guidelines, but not only is Covid hampering our efforts but the state of our Ash trees in the woods has raised health and safety concerns.

a huge challenge. While we seek further clarification from the Council about their strategy for dealing with this we will have to confine our work to the areas away from the woods and concentrate on the butterfly banks, meadow and hedgerows.

We are hoping that with the easing of restrictions we will be able to invite volunteers back to help in June; we will post more about this on our Facebook page and update our website (www.fhbw.org. uk) as soon as we have more concrete information. It will be very sad to lose our graceful Ash trees with their inconspicuous but beautiful flowers as their loss will totally alter the dynamics of the woods, but we must try to look for the positives. It’s not as if we haven’t had to face this situation before: the Friends’ group was formed after the Great Storm of 1987 toppled most of the trees in the woods, but The Council’s arboricultural team has we set about replanting and expanding advised our Ranger that it is unsafe for us the woods and created more habitats and to work in the woods where Ash is presdramatically increased the biodiversity. In ent as its dying branches can be prone to this respect it’s beginning to feel a bit like suddenly falling. As the Ash is widespread throughout our woods this presents us with déjà vu… Ash Dieback is caused by a fungal pathogen which was brought to this country on infected planting stock and possibly by spores being carried across the Channel on the wind. It was first identified on Ash trees in the UK in 2012, although it is now believed it was present here as early 2005/6. It has relentlessly spread across all counties of England and locally its effects became visible in 2017/8 on the fringes of our city. It has gradually crept south to infect the Ash on Hollingbury golf course and is now in both of our woods.

News from a local group…

10 News from the Friends of Blakers Park…

Sunshine and Park Life in Blakers Here’s the latest from in and around Blakers Park, our special little green space near Fiveways. As we all adjust to an easing of lockdown after a tough winter period, park life is the perfect antidote. The tennis courts have just reopened, the café is open for business and everyone is out enjoying spring sunshine and longer evenings – albeit with the need to stay firm on social distancing for a while yet. Playground transformation! Best of all, the new normal in Blakers will include a major refurbishment of the playground, scheduled to begin mid summer. As part of a citywide scheme that sees £4.8m of Section 106 money (spin off funding from property development in the city) being invested in playgrounds across Brighton and Hove’s parks and green spaces, Blakers is getting an amazing facelift! The design of the new scheme will include: a link path to increase foot, buggy and wheelchair access around and into the sand pit area • natural theme with all timber and grass mounds being refreshed • new safety surface under climbing pyramid • new swings together in one space • new rock and spin zone, including giant seesaw • central picnic bench area so carers have clear sight to all play zones • new multiplay zone – more accessible for children with disabilities • new sand play zone with lots more features

Safety in the park We are taking an active role in the newly formed Preston Park and Fiveways Local Action Team (LAT), working in collaboration with Friends of Preston Park, our Police Community Support Officers and others, to address antisocial behaviour in our local green spaces. Please report any issues to the Police: Crime in progress or there is imminent danger – call 999 Crime has finished or ASB is taking place – call 101 You can also report at www.sussex.police. uk or email 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk Stay safe and please look after Blakers – use the bins or take your litter home and recycle whatever you can. Enjoy the sunshine!

15 Councillor news from David Gibson, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

This week we re-started with working with GoodGym to paint out graffiti and clear away rubbish in Hanover and Elm Grove and as I write spring blossom is decking streets and parks, bluebells are poking up and we can meet again outside. The terrible pandemic is diminishing for now in the UK. A time for us all to feel hopeful. My biggest hope is that we build back fairer. We are the sixth richest nation in the world and yet we fail to house homeless people, and tragically, despite increasing total wealth, more and more people are depending on food banks than ever. For me greater fairness is driven not by ideology but the evidence that taking practical steps to narrow inequalities leads to healthier and happier lives for all social groups, rich or poor. The research published in “The Spirit Level”, by Kate Pickett and Richard Wilkinson, demonstrates the link between narrowing inequality and better outcomes for people across the developed world. Making developed countries like ours richer by the constant pursuit of growth does not lead to better health, less violence, suicide, mental illness etc but remarkably it is shown time and time again that making countries more equal does help improve quality of life for everyone. This is particularly good news for the planet with its limited resources since we do not need to pursue climate-ruining growth endlessly. As a council we are striving to narrow housing inequalities and in March we became the first council in the UK to sign up to a

A

homeless bill of rights. We are working to end the need for rough sleeping and ensure all homeless people have an offer of accommodation (rough sleeper numbers have fallen by 67%). We have replaced twice the number of socially rented homes lost to the Right to Buy scheme over the last two years and in doing this are providing not only much needed affordable housing but also employment and apprenticeships at a time of economic crisis. In the same way that the after the trauma of the Second World War came a vision of a fairer country fit for heroes, after the trauma and loss of the pandemic, I hope and urge national government (despite their ideological leanings) for everyone’s sake to grasp the opportunity and build back fairer, to prioritise narrowing inequality rather than choosing the pursuit of endless profit-driven growth which is totally unsustainable and will condemn the next generation to the ravages of the climate crisis. 16 Hanover news…

Hanover Arts Trail We are pleased to announce that the Hanover Arts Trail is back for 2021 as part of Brighton’s Artists Open Houses. This year, to link in with the Brighton Fringe Festival, Artists Open Houses will be running from 29th May – 27th June. There are five venues showcasing their art on the Hanover Arts Trail this year, which includes the opportunity to explore the extensive Phoenix Arts studios. We also have three new houses opening their doors, one of which is the home of AOH brochure cover star Becky Blair. Many of the spaces will be open every weekend over this period for you to visit (check individual listings for opening dates and times). These are mainly private homes where artists and makers hide away the rest of the year, working in attics, garden studios and on kitchen tables. Then along comes AOH and we give the house a

good tidy and fill our walls and shelves with all the products of our hard work, ready for you to come, browse and hopefully buy! This is a unique opportunity to buy directly from the artists. Not only does this mean you may find a piece of art you fall in love with, but it also means you get to meet the people behind the work and find out what inspires them and their creative process. Artists Open Houses will be complying to strict Covid regulations as laid out at the time of opening. This may mean you are required to provide details for NHS Track and Trace, sanitise hands and wear face masks. Hanover map by Lisa Holdcroft

Plans to convert The Freehaus A new application has been submitted for planning permission to convert The Freehaus pub at 1 Howard Road (formerly The Reservoir) into a three-bedroom family home, with a large living space and garden. The pub is owned by the Brighton Bier brewery. A previous application was withdrawn because the planning officer couldn’t support it. The main reason for this was the loss of community facilities. The applicants, Graderich Ltd, say that they have now provided evidence that the building was economically unviable as a pub even prior to the Covid pandemic. They say in their application: “For some years now the amount of pubs in the city has been on the decline for a good reason, their popularity is declining. After all, a pub is a business, hopefully profit making, so when the customers start to diminish, keeping the business afloat becomes impossible. Indigo Leisure tried for over 4 years until 2019 to their cost, well before Covid arrived. The fact that there are so many pubs in such a small area has played a large part in the demise of The Reservoir.” The application says that there are seven public houses within a five-minute walk of Howard Road and a further eight within ten minutes’ walk. It also pointed out that there had been no objections from neighbours to the first application. For full details or to comment, see application BH2021/00983 on the council’s planning register at planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk.

21 News from Hanover Action…

Over the last six months Brighton and Hove City Council have been holding a consultation process about the future of the 12,800 acres of the South Downs owned by the city for the last 100 years. Many individuals and organisations connected with the Downland Estate including farmers, walkers, The Sussex Wildlife Trust, archaeological societies, the Brighton Downs Alliance and Extinction Rebellion have joined online discussions and made submissions about the future management of the land. A draft Whole Estate Plan is being produced taking into account the views that have been submitted. At the same time as this consultation is happening BHCC have produced their Becoming Carbon Neutral by 2030 strategy. The ecological/ bio-diversity crisis features very little in that strategy.

and to listen to the people that have real expertise in this. There are lots of competing and important interests in how the Downs are managed – there is some concern that the consultation process, in the difficult context of not being able to hold open public meetings, has not been set in the overall policy priority context of addressing the climate and ecological emergency and is not being run by people who have expertise in the environment and conservation.

In that context the priorities should be to require all farms on the estate to restore ecosystems through regenerative agriculture, low carbon and nature friendly farmHow the downland is managed is key to ing, to protect the chalk aquifer and so the both promoting biodiversity and recity’s water supply, to protect and restore ducing carbon. Although much of the biodiversity and to allow and promote species-rich chalk grassland has already public access. A popular suggestion within been lost, it is an internationally rare priori- this context is to allocate the next suitable ty habitat; one square metre can support farm tenancy for community management up to 80 species of plants and moss. leading to local food production, local It must be a priority to conserve those employment and connecting local people existing areas and to select other areas to food growing. where there is an opportunity for recovery Hanover Action supports the measures that link most closely to addressing our climate and biodiversity emergency. There will be more opportunities to follow and comment on this process. If you are interested go online to City Downland Estate (brighton-hove.gov. uk/city-downland-estateplan-0) and follow the process as it unfolds. www.hasl.org.uk Have a local editorial item? 23 Meet a Hanover resident who’s just written his first book…

Harold Heath is a music writer living in Hanover. His first book, on the life of a DJ, is published in May. How long have you lived in Hanover? 12 years. Why did you decide to write a book? Well, I was a DJ for years but never quite reached the top level. There are lots of books about famous DJs and their highend adventures, but I wanted to write the story of every low-level DJ who perhaps didn’t ‘make it’ but whose lives were nonetheless enriched by their time behind the What’s the funniest thing that’s hapdecks. pened to you as a DJ? Tell us more about the book… DJs get lots of funny requests. I’ve been asked things like “When will it get betSo it’s a low-rent whirlwind journey ter?” or “Do you know where my friends through three decades as a DJ and producer, featuring, obviously, tales of DJing, are?” quite often. I was once DJing and had been playing hip hop for an hour. I budget international travel, nightclubs, changed the mood a little and a girl came promoters, security, making records, buying records and all the highs and lows up to the DJ booth and said, “Can you play of small-time DJing. It’s a funny, poignant, some hip hop?” I said, “I’ve been playing hip hop for the last hour.” “Yes,” she said, full-on and honest tale and hopefully, it’s “but I was sitting down then.” like the very best DJ sets in that it gives you plenty of what you wanted as well as “Long Relationships: My Incredible Journey lots of what you didn’t know you wanted. from Unknown DJ to Small-Time DJ” by Harold Heath is published on 7th May by Do you have a favourite Brighton Velocity Press and will be available from music venue? the Velocity Press website and others inI have a soft spot for what is now Dead cluding Goodreads, Borders and Amazon. Wax Social, formerly Riki Tiks. Although there are venues in town with better sound systems and bigger dancefloors, it has a certain vibe and charm all of its own and I’ve spent a few happy hours there over the years, on the dance floor and on the decks. I mention it in the book too as I had my album launch party there a few years ago and DJed there regularly one summer.

25 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Get down Shep! My dad invented a verb. Its usage was confined within close family circles, but its meaning was abundantly clear to us, writes Friends of Queen’s Park chairman, Geoffrey Bowden.

QUEENS PARK

“Don’t bok it!” he would boom, if someone started to speak too effusively about an event on the horizon that everyone was eagerly looking forward to, but secretly feared might not happen. To be guilty of ‘boking’ meant that you were increasing the chances of ruining something happening simply by talking about it. That’s how I feel as I prepare to file my copy for the Brightonian a fortnight before publication. In this Topsy-Turvy world a lot can change in fourteen days, let alone two and a half months. So, in trepidation of ‘boking’ it, I write that on Sunday, 18th July, Bark in the Park is scheduled to return to Queen’s Park. What could possibly go wrong? The last time the Friends of Queen’s Park organised this glorious and much-love community event was in the Summer of 2019. It was a little chilly and there were some spits of rain. Neither deterred entries or people coming to the park’s dog area to enjoy watching the competition to be top dog in the ten fun categories. With the support of Coastway Vets and numerous stallholders, much needed funds were raised and allocated for various park maintenance projects. That was then. Now we are in a world where no one knows from one week to the next what restrictions there will or won’t be by the time we gather to see which furry friend walks off with the winner’s rosette as the top sausage catcher, or whether it is a rescue or golden oldie that is declared Best in Show. All we can do is remain as positive as possible, work closely with the Council,

Arthur, the 2019 winner of Happiest Dog

volunteers and our friends at Coastways, with the common aim of delivering a safe and enjoyable community event. So put Sunday, 18th July in your diaries and start grooming your puppies, making fancy dress costumes, rehearsing those doggie tricks and hope to goodness that by writing about Bark in the Park, I haven’t ‘boked’ it! Spoiler alert! While it is always welcome to write about a fun community event, I must warn you that next month’s article will, most probably, be less fluffy. The Friends of Queen’s Park will have held a community safety meeting focussing on Anti-Social Behaviour and I will be reporting on that.

27 News from Green councillor Clare Rainey…

Councillor News for Queen’s Park

While many residents are feeling that there is light at the end of the tunnel, the longterm impacts of the pandemic cannot be underestimated. Some people are grieving for relatives and friends lost to the virus, while others are still suffering from the effects of COVID. As widely reported, there has also been an impact on mental health and well-being, and by the end of 2020 as many as 10 million people in the UK, including 1.5 million children, were thought to be in need of new or additional mental health support as a direct result of the pandemic. Areas with a higher concentration of younger people, such as Brighton and Hove, areas with higher rates of unemployment and urban areas outside of London are among those most affected in recent months. Mental health services, particularly those for children and young people, are overstretched and due to years of national underfunding have little capacity to cope with the increased demand due to the pandemic. Our recently agreed 2021-2022 budget includes investment in youth centre services and youth engagement. It also includes investments to continue to tackle inequality and disadvantage among young people, BAME initiatives and race education. In Queens Park ward I was very pleased to

have the opportunity to award some of my annual ward grant to White Street and Bedford Street Community Gardens. The link between being in nature and taking part in group activities, and improved mental health, is well known, and these community gardens give residents the opportunity to do both. If you have a community project you need support with then you can apply for the council Communities Fund. See www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/ life-events-and-communities/community-and-voluntary-sector-support/communities-fund for more details. I was also pleased to have the opportunity to vote for a joint notice of motion at Full Council in March asking for future funding to mitigate the impact of COVID-19 on children, young people and households. This includes calling for long-term funding from the national Treasury to support children and young people most affected by the pandemic. I am always happy to be contacted by residents, and interested to hear about new ideas and issues that you feel need to be addressed. Cllr Clare Rainey clare.rainey@brighton-hove.gov.uk

QUEENS PARK

As we move into Spring and lockdown restrictions begin to be lifted there is a sense of optimism in Brighton & Hove. People can now finally see the friends and family they have been missing, participate in sports and resume many of their day-to-day activities. Pupils and students have returned to school and college.

29 Congratulations to Shauna and her staff...

Local Nursery Celebrating Significant Milestone... When Shauna Caulfield moved to Brighton from London in 1990 with two young children she needed childcare. QUEENS PARK

Shauna was looking for somewhere where her children could really learn and thrive in a loving and nurturing environment. There was nothing available in the area at the time so Shauna started her own nursery! She found a semi-derelict Methodist church that had stood unused for many years and started converting it into a nursery - Orchard Day Nursery was born! She started with a couple of rooms and, with eight children including her own two, the nursery opened for their very first day on 6th May 1991.

dren benefit from an early years environment and a fantastic enthusiastic team providing amazing experiences has been a wonderful thing to witness and special thanks go to my amazing team. Carnival welcome BIMM Music College as the headline sponsor for 2021, giving much needed support to their event students helping to manage the stages and performance areas, all in an exciting brand-new location which will be announced on kemptowncarnival. com and across social media this summer. If you want to register as an artist, volunteer or to have a market stall, that is coming up in May. A start was made last September, with the planting of a Ginkgo biloba tree. Now spring is here and BTTC and residents of Hampshire Court and Warwick Mount have planted some trees and shrubs, along with Jamie Greenland of Urban Jungles.

Tim Holtam of BTTC told us: “We are really excited about the positive response from local residents, businesses and passers-by. We want to make the Kemptown Community Garden a welcoming space for all. It is more important than ever to have outdoor spaces where we can get some fresh air, exercise and socialise. From the 17th May on Thursdays The Real Junk Food Project will be serving hot lunches on a pay-as-you-feel basis and we hope that people will eat together outside in the new community garden.”

The winner of the recent ‘Carnival rebrand competition’ will be announced with Roxy & Ant on the Decadance Radio Breakfast show on Friday 30th April at 8am; you can listen on DAB Digital Radio or via the app/website at decadanceradio.com. 32 A new Sporting Memories Club is opening in East Brighton…

Sporting Memories What were you doing when England won the football World Cup in 1966? Do you remember Jonny Wilkinson’s drop-goal in the rugby World Cup Final? What about more local sporting events – did you follow the achievements of Sally Gunnell, Steve Ovett and Chris Eubank? What about the Seagulls? Do you remember the 1983 FA Cup Final, when Jimmy Melia’s team arrived at Wembley all white-suited and in a helicopter? Did you celebrate when Chris Adams, Mushtaq Ahmed and the team brought the County Championship Trophy to Sussex for the first time in 2003? Perhaps you have your own sporting memories of taking part in and enjoying sport with others. These memories form the basis of Sporting Memory Clubs and a new club is poised to open in East Brighton to join five others that already operate across Sussex under the auspices of Sussex County Cricket Club. THE SPORTING MEMORIES FOUNDATION is a national charity that uses sport and people’s interaction with it throughout their lives to bring together older people, who may be isolated or lonely, in a spirit of comradeship and a love of sport. Research has also shown that this approach can be helpful to people who have problems with their memory or a diagnosis of dementia. There is already a successful club that runs at Sussex Cricket’s Hove ground (although of course meeting online currently because of the pandemic) and two local residents of East Brighton, Thurstine Basset and Alastair Hignell, have decided that it is time to set up a club in their locality. This club will most

Brighton’s arts charity Lighthouse is offering free online creative workshops on 8, 15 & 22 May for families and young people as part of its programme for this year’s Brighton Festival. Led by Leap Then Look, whose creative workshops have been described by Tate galleries as “nothing short of brilliant”, children and young people are invited to explore the science behind the Big Bang using everyday objects found at home.

Also included in Lighthouse’s Brighton Festival programme is Informals II, an exhibition and live performance created by artists Polina Medvedeva and Andreas Kὒuhne in collaboration with a group of young Brighton musicians.

“Our work is about making connections between art, technology, science and society and our programme for this year’s Brighton Festival shines a light on people and things that might not be immediately visible.” Alli Beddoes, Artistic Director and CEO of Lighthouse, says: “Our work is about making connections between art, technology, science and society and our programme for this year’s Brighton Festival shines a

37 News from the council…

Become a “groundwater guardian” Become a “groundwater guardian” and help care for the precious aquifer that gives us all clean water to drink and enjoy. That’s the message from The Aquifer Partnership (TAP), which is offering simple ways for residents, gardeners, community organisations and businesses to help safeguard the chalk aquifer of the South Downs that supplies water to over 1.2m people and is under increasing threat from climate change. High levels of nitrate have been recorded in Brighton & Hove’s water supply.

1. Create a rain garden: Rain gardens are designed to mimic the natural processes that break down pollution and reduce flood risk by slowing water down. They use the power of plants to filter and cleanse polluted water. Easy to incorporate into a garden or allotment, it can be as simple as a planted area with gravel and sand layers below to cleanse water before it filters into the ground. For more advice see: raingardens.info 2. Drain your driveway: To avoid excessive surface water run-off, it’s a good idea to choose permeable paving and have it properly installed. Take a look at the Royal Horticultural Society’s guide to permeable driveways (rhs.org.uk). 3. Healthy plants – help your herbaceous perennials: You can prevent chemicals leaching into the groundwater by avoiding chemical fertilisers and pesticides. Well-rotted manure can be spread and dug into the soil in spring, rather than in the autumn. Companion plants help to attract beneficial insects, taking those unwanted pests’ attention away from your prize blooms and veggies.

Above: Create a rain garden Left: Phacelia will help improve soil health

4. Don’t leave your beds bare! Don’t leave your beds bare over winter – sow “green manure” seeds such as phacelia or crimson clover in the autumn and they will help improve soil health and prevent nitrate leaching. The flowers also attract beneficial insects like hoverflies. Phacelia makes an excellent companion for kale, broccoli and tomatoes – and it’s very fast-growing! 5. Only rain down the drain: Most road drains and surface drains are designed to carry only rainwater. Pouring pollutants down these drains is like pouring them straight into the groundwater via a soakaway. Just one litre of oil can pollute one million litres of drinking water. 39 Advertorial...an interview with Paul Leonard, the local businessman behind NESTY Homes...

Solving your Property Problems... Paul – can you tell us about NESTY HOMES? NESTY Homes is a Hove based family business here to solve people’s property problems. We help sellers, buyers, landlords and investors who need more support and better solutions than they’re currently being offered right now. We help people sell their place when it’s not selling for the price they want. We do what’s called an assisted sale where we refurbish the property at no cost to the owner then we sell it for them. We ensure they get the sale price they want, handle all the refurbishing, decoration and management of the sale.

Can you give an example of an assisted sale? Of course – ‘Glendaruel’ was a 2-bed terraced house that was not selling at the price the owner wanted. It needed lots of attention though the owner didn’t have the time or money to complete the work. We agreed with the owner a sell price they were happy with and we completely refurbished the place. I It sold within 12 days for over the asking price and even broke the record sell price for that size of property in the area! The house also received a record number of viewings and received 5 offers above asking price. It was a great result for everyone involved – allowing the owner a hassle-free way to move on. The agent was super-happy as the standard was above the norm for a refurbished place.

Before

After

and price they wanted, with no hassle. The agency loved it as they’d seen the transformation, sold quickly - and higher than it would have been so got higher commission. The buyer got a lovely home to move into. What’s in it for NESTY? We get to do the thing we love – refurbishing – without the long-winded and additional costings of a purchase. We take on the risk that the property will achieve, a value that will encompass our costs plus profit – if it doesn’t, we miss out – not the owner, not the agent. How can someone find out more? Call, message or email us for a free, no obligation, no hard sell – happy to chat nestyhomes.com 01273 809503/07388 033621

41 News from the council…

With crowds of people gathering on the beach and seafront, Brighton & Hove City Council are urging people to take their rubbish home if bins are full.

Consultation on household waste tips The council are holding a consultation to ask residents their views on the future of the city’s household waste recycling sites, or tips. The first question is whether the council should start charging for certain types of materials that aren’t normal ‘household waste’ like rubble, soil, plasterboard, tyres and asbestos. The second question is whether there should be ID checks to ensure the people using the sites are Brighton & Hove residents.

They have put around 70 additional large communal-type bins on the seafront, but some people are still leaving their waste beside the existing triple bins while the new ones remain empty. Clear signage is being put on the new bins to ensure people know they can be used, as some people think they may be for trade use only. But even if these additional bins do become full, people should find a bin that isn’t full or take their rubbish home. Additional measures to tackle the build-up of waste on the beach and seafront include: •

Signage reminding people to take their litter home if the bin is full

Extra signage reminding people they face on-the-spot fines of £150 for littering

Additional staff until the end of the summer to collect waste

Pavement stencilling and vinyls from Brighton Station to the seafront reminding people to use a bin that’s not full or take their rubbish home.

As accepting non-household waste costs money, the council have decided it may now be time to start charging for disposing of rubble, soil, plasterboard, tyres and asbestos. The money charged would be reinvested into Cityclean services like street cleansing. Many councils already charge for some or all of these waste types. ID checks only take place at present for van users to ensure they are residents of the city and are not disposing of trade waste. However, evidence shows people from outside the city are using our recycling sites. This means Brighton & Hove taxpayers are paying for the disposal of waste from non-Brighton & Hove residents. The consultation ends on 31 May. You can find it at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ rubbish-recycling-and-streets/household-waste-recycling-sites

49 Look out for the Pier to Pier bench…

Pier to Pier provides a snapshot of coastal life Throughout May/June, a bright orange audio bench will be appearing in a range of locations between Brighton and Worthing Piers. The bench will play recordings of local people, including a fisherman, a sea swimmer, a nurse, a busker, giving their views of what it’s like to live on the very edge of the country.

The public will be invited to sit on the bench at 10 locations across the 14 miles between the two piers. They will listen to a soundscape which includes fragments from 14 people who live and work along the coast. Stories include Ron, a Goring fisherman, describing being at sea during an eclipse. ‘There was nothing between the sea and the sky. I had to keep looking back. But out there was a complete black hole. Completely black, not anything, nothing at all.’ The audio reminiscences will also feature a soundtrack of a new arrangement created especially for the project by film composer Jocelyn Pook, responsible for the music in Eyes Wide Shut and Gangs of New York. This arrangement will be sung by over 50 community choir singers from all along the Sussex coast who have been rehearsing online before being recorded for the final piece. The bench will be positioned in spots looking out to sea, such as on Brighton Palace Pier, Shoreham Fort and in the South Downs National Park, and anyone is free to sit, take a moment and listen.

Emma Higham and Lisa Peck of RAPT Theatre explain: “This piece explores the notion of living on the edge and finding a point of balance in uncertain times. Our desire is to create something unique, accessible for all and uplifting as we come out of a challenging and difficult year. We hope that the act of walking, listening to others’ stories and sitting on a bench usually a spot for people to share conversations - will offer connection at a time when contact is limited.’ The sound installation can be experienced at any time and adheres to Covid-19 restrictions including social distancing. The first appearance of the bench is on 10 May at Brighton Pier. Pier to Pier is funded by Arts Council England, Chalk Cliff Trust and Enjoolata Foundation. More details and a map of the bench’s location can be found at https://www. pier-to-pier.com For more information, contact Emma Higham at rapt.theatre@gmail.com

51 This exhibition will be at the former Holy Trinity Church in The Lanes…

Fairytale installation at Fabrica In Spring 2021, Fabrica, Brighton’s Centre for Contemporary Art, will present ‘fairytale installation’ The Forked Forest Path by internationally renowned artist Olafur Eliasson.

Visitors will be immersed in a space filled with branches, saplings and thinnings, combined with a strong, earthy smell reminiscent of a forest floor. All this works to create the illusion of being lost in a dense wooded environment. The Forked Forest Path evokes a strong sense of ‘the woods’ and our relationship to this aspect of nature and human folklore. As with many of Eliasson’s works, audiences are encouraged to physically engage with it in order to fully immerse themselves in the experience. Visitors enter via a narrow winding path which forks in the middle of the installation where they must actively choose one path to continue their adventure. The artist’s stipulation for recreating The Forked Forest Path is that galleries must only use branches and saplings sourced locally and sustainably in order to exhibit in their space. Fabrica have been working, since 2019, with Foxwood Forestry near Lewes and the Stanmer Park management team to generate the material for the exhibition. When the exhibition closes, the wood will be chipped and recycled as mulch for growing new trees at Stanmer Park.

“The Forked Forest Path” by Olafur Eliasson will be at Fabrica gallery

Liz Whitehead, Director, Fabrica, said: “We are delighted to be able to present this amazing work at Fabrica at the beginning of our 25th anniversary year programme. Through this playful and sensual artwork, visitors will be asked to consider their relationship with nature, their ideas about the countryside and find out about the woods nearby that people can visit for themselves. If you’ve become a little bored of your regular walks, now is a great time to discover how beautiful, beneficial and biodiverse our local woods are.” There is an events programme alongside the exhibition: see fabrica.org.uk/events Fabrica is at Holy Trinity Church, Ship Street, in the heart of The Lanes. Opening hours from 18 May until 20 June are Tues-Sun 11am-6pm, closed Mon except May bank holiday, and the exhibition is also online - see fabrica.org.uk.

53 An underground arts venue is opening up east of the pier…

The Electric Arcade Otherplace (the team behind The Warren) are thrilled to have opened the doors to their new underground arts venue The Electric Arcade this April. The Electric Arcade is a brand new live theatre, comedy, music and film venue nestled on Brighton beach, just east of the Palace Pier. This multifunctional space will provide a creative hub for Brighton’s diverse arts sector and access to high-quality live performance to the city’s discerning audiences.

Featuring two studio theatres and a main cabaret stage within its organic urban design, The Gaiety and The Pit also offer affordable rehearsal space for local artists right in the heart of the city. Ahead of live performance restrictions being eased, the venue’s two theatre spaces are going to be used as rehearsal spaces. Playing host to a range of local arts companies, the venues will house readings, meetings, rehearsals and become writing rooms throughout the spring for stand-up comedians, dancers, playwrights, poets and actors. Artistic Director Nicola Haydn says: “We’ve always prided ourselves on finding and creating space for artists to develop and hone their skills and this is just an extension of that - nurturing new work is central to what we do. It’s great to be able to have a year-round home again so we can do just that. The performance spaces are due to open with live shows when further restrictions ease but from this weekend our stylish beach front patio is open for business. There might not be live theatre but the stunning view of the sun setting

behind Brighton’s iconic pier certainly does provide a bit of drama!” Table bookings are open now and we recommend you reserve your space for this destination venue with front row seats 11:42 Page 1 toDI-Version-1 Brighton’s19/09/2011 glorious sunsets. DI-Version-1 19/09/2011 11:42 Page 1

55 Advertorial; focussing on an ethical business aiming to end the use of single use cups...

Time for a Global WAKEcup? Global WAKEcup is a zero waste reusables brand with a mission to end single-use plastic pollution for good. Based in the UK, Global WAKEcup was born in 2018 after old friends Buffie and Nick got chatting about David Attenborough’s iconic Blue Planet series and realised they needed to get involved in the fight against single-use plastics.

Global WAKEcup is more than just stylish, sustainably sourced coffee cups and water bottles. It’s a movement towards a world where everyone can choose to reuse, and say no to single-use. Please support us and our charity partners by visiting our shop at: globalwakecup.com/ collections/shop Why we need a zero waste revolution Each year, 100 billion coffee cups end up in

landfill. A plastic bottle can take up to 1000 years to decompose. By 2050, there could be more plastic in the oceans than fish. These facts are what keep us going, and why we make our products from natural, recyclable materials like bamboo, stainless steel, copper and glass. As well as globalwakecup.com we supply Selfridges, Not On The High Street and The Queen’s Estate at Sandringham. Designed in the UK, we source materials and products from suppliers across the globe, with ethical standards for all workers in the supply chain a key priority, undertaking independent audits on an annual basis. We also use plastic-free packaging, including green jiffy bags, recycled cardboard and paper tape. From our #1weekplasticfree challenge to our podcast on climate action, we’re constantly campaigning for change at an industry and everyday level. Get involved by connecting with us on Instagram @ globalwakecup for daily zero waste inspiration. Small changes matter, so we hope that we can give you the tools to make a difference. Our charity partners We donate 10% of all our profits to the Marine Conservation Society. From organising mass beach cleans to campaigning for plastic bans, every purchase you make is helping fund vital work protecting sealife and marine habitats. www.globalwakeup.com

57 Enjoy a summer of culture and art with the Royal Pavilion & Museums in Brighton & Hove…

Royal Pavilion & Museums reopening in May... David Bowie, royal treasures and fun for the children are all on offer at the Royal Pavilion & Museums this year. We’re thrilled to be reopening in May and we’ve got lots of fantastic art and culture for you to soak up this summer.

Taken by his childhood friend Geoff MacCormack who toured with Bowie in the 70s, Rock n’ Roll with Me – Bowie/MacCormack 1973–76 has images from Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane of Britain’s Glam Rock years, the ground-breaking Diamond Dogs tour across the USA to Bowie’s first major film The Man Who Fell to Earth (1975) and the recording of Station to Station and his Thin White Duke persona. These intimate photographs, some of which have never been seen before, give a glimpse of a close friendship, travel and life on the road with one of the greatest rock stars of all time. Visitors to the Royal Pavilion will be able to catch A Prince’s Treasure which has been extended and reopens on Monday 17 May 2021. Spectacular items of art and furniture owned by George IV are on show for the first time in 170 years in the Royal Pavilion. Items lent by Her Majesty The Queen from the Royal Collection include majestic 15foot high porcelain pagodas and exquisite Chinese nodding figurines. The Royal Collection loan has been returned to the Royal Pavilion while building work is being carried out at Buckingham Palace. For some fun activities with the family this

summer, why not try Preston Manor, our Edwardian manor house? Discover how the lady of the manor upstairs and the butler and the maids worked downstairs. Our children’s trails around the house will keep the kids engaged as they discover facts about the pets and children who once lived there. Opens on Friday 28 May 2021. Book on our website: www.brightonmuseums.org.uk. Our standard admission tickets include free return visits for a year from the date of issue, at no extra cost (excluding promotional offers and group tickets). You can also buy our Multi Attraction Annual Pass which includes the Royal Pavilion, Brighton Museum and Preston Manor. If you live in Brighton & Hove or are a regular visitor, this pass will provide you with unlimited access to our museums for a year.

61 Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep looks back at the Albion Hill Home in Finsbury Road…

The Albion Hill Home for Female Penitents This building is a reminder of the time when Brighton’s female prostitutes young women and girls of 13 and 14 – provided services on an industrial scale.

George Wagner knew he could not walk the streets looking for girls to reclaim without some risk to his character as a single man. He had been fortunate to meet Fanny Vicars, a keen Christian, who was not deterred from entering those streets barred to respectable women. Her idea was to approach the women running the brothels, making a friend of them, listening to their troubles and offering them assistance in their lives. There was training for work in service if they came to her. That plan had a trickle-down effect. By 1869 girls needed no incentive to knock at the door, and the rules of the Home ensured they were never refused.

GENERAL

The Albion Hill Home for Female Penitents, built on a hillside which overlooked a green valley in 1858, was designed to ‘rescue’ as many of these women as it could. It was the idea of local clergyman George Wagner, who had already set up homes for prostitutes elsewhere in Brighton. In his will of 1857 he left £1000 for the construction of a purpose-built institution for 62 inmates. Light and welcoming, it had dormitories, a dining room, laundry and sewing rooms and an outside playground with swings and skipping ropes. The latter reminds us of the age of the users.

would be distracted by the other girls and ‘the splashing and clattering and pounding going on all around her’. From doing this she went on to more specialised work in the public laundry and from there to a training in needlework and the sewing machine. Two years after her admission, she was found a place. She left with a new outfit, a Bible, prayer book and writing case. There was a gift of ten shillings if she stayed in her new job for a year.

Windmill Young Actors... Windmill Young Actors is emerging out of lockdown with good news all round. During the first lockdown we received support from The Arts Council and Brighton and Hove City Council, giving us the ability to provide free online workshops in Script Writing, Film Making and Song Writing, Story Telling and Stage Combat to young people all over the city.

It is deeply reassuring to know that funding bodies want us to survive and continue to provide the work we do creating youth-led arts with the talented young people of this city. Tanushka Marah, the local theatre director who founded Windmill Young Actors, says: “We are excited to embark on a new phase for our youth theatre company. We are re-launching with a family show at Brighton Open Air Theatre and we are also opening free drama clubs in Brighton Youth Centre, Whitehawk and West Brighton soon. We want the experience of making and watching high quality drama to be accessible to all young people. We want drama to be as accessible and easy to join as football. We have free spaces for teenagers from low-income families and we are soon to open free clubs for younger people. Please get in touch with us to find out more.” We run clubs for 7-23 year olds all through the week. 67 A new season at BOAT…

Brighton Open Air Theatre returns The new season at the Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Dyke Road Park is due to begin on 19th May.

“When Miss Shepherd drove her van into my garden in 1974 friends used to ask me if I was planning to write a play about her. I wasn’t, but 25 years later I did.” The play tells a mostly true story of Alan Bennett’s friendship with Miss Mary Shepherd, an eccentric homeless woman, who lived in a van on his driveway in the 1970s. Alan Bennett said: “When Miss Shepherd drove her van into my garden in 1974 friends used to ask me if I was planning to write a play about her. I wasn’t, but 25 years later I did.” Miss Shepherd came for three months and stayed for 15 years. The play will run from Wednesday 26th to Saturday 29th May at 7pm, with matinées at 2pm on Thursday and Saturday. Tickets cost £15 (concessions £13.50).

The Lady in the Van

June’s Comedy Festival sees a host of stand-up comedy dates at the BOAT, packed full of household names. In July, there are extended runs of Shakespeare favourites A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Romeo and Juliet, whilst August brings plenty of family-friendly productions, including local regulars Brighton Little Theatre’s production of Roald Dahl’s The Twits. The season closes out in September, with Opera Anywhere’s Gilbert and Sullivan Festival and runs of Julius Caesar and Richard II. As per government guidelines, BOAT will be operating with a reduced capacity and social distancing in place until such a time when it is safe and responsible to start loosening restrictions. For the full programme and to book tickets, visit brightonopenairtheatre.co.uk

Also in May are an evening of stand-up comedy; A Lark in the Park - a mini-festival showcasing Carousel’s learning-disabled artists; productions of Cymbeline (by Brighton College students), The Minotaur, Oh Mary, and Pandora by Windmill Young Actors, which is a joyful adventure for all the family. One of the first shows will be a production of Alan Bennett’s play The Lady in the Van, a funny and poignant tale about the generosity of the human spirit, possibly. The cast will include Nathan Ariss, Nick Bartlett, Pip Henderson, Jack Kristiansen, Sarah Mann and Paul Moriarty.

69 Advertorial: Welcoming new owners to a family-run local dental practice.

We welcome you to Boundary Implant Centre. Boundary Implant Centre is very well placed on our bustling Boundary Road, the surgery has been established for close to 50 years. Dr. Boji purchased the business in July 2020. Over the last year, Dr. Boji has taken the time to renovate the surgery bringing in state-of-the-art technologies to offer the best treatment he can locally. Having been practising for almost 30 years he holds extensive knowledge in his field. Alongside Dr. Boji there is a fabulous team of fully qualified staff at the practice ready to help complete your patient journey.

At Boundary Implant Centre, we welcome nervous patients, offering a more relaxed setting to put you at your ease. What can we do? At Boundary Implant Centre we offer all your routine general dentistry needs, cosmetic treatments, and all forms of minor oral surgery. Is there a reason you have been putting off going to a dentist? A new patient examination is just £50 and includes all radiographs. (with this advert) Alongside routine treatments, Dr. Boji has a keen interest in oral surgery and placing implants, leaving many happy smiles with prices from just £1200. Another passion and service we offer is treatment with laser therapy. It is easy to neglect your gums because we cannot see what happens below the surface. It is quite common to see people with

bone loss and over time this can lead to loose teeth. Conventional gum treatments can be extremely uncomfortable, however with the system we use at Boundary Implant Centre bone regeneration is much more positive and relatively painless (words we like to read). Another special service we offer is impression-free treatments. Having a crown, denture, or gum shield made involves taking an impression in the mouth. Many patients fear this process, we are extremely excited to be able to offer impression-free treatments. All our dental treatments such as crowns will be prepared with digital imaging. 71 News from the council…

Free Covid tests now for everyone... Everyone can and is encouraged to take twice-weekly Covid tests, even when we have no symptoms.

In Brighton & Hove you can get tested in several convenient ways.

collect two boxes at a time; each box contains seven tests.

Pick up a test pack to take at home: If you’re happy to test yourself at home, you can collect tests from various locations.

NHS Test & Trace sites: These operate as symptomatic testing sites in the morning but are currently providing an afternoon collect option, where you can pick up test kits to use at home. Visit: find-covid-19-rapid-test-sites.maps.test-and-trace.nhs.uk.

Pharmacy Collect and Community Collect: People can go to a participating pharmacy and pick up free test kits to use at home. Across Sussex, local authorities are also setting up test kit collection sites from libraries. Search this NHS England website - maps.test-and-trace.nhs.uk/ findatestcentre.html - to find sites that offer collection of LFD (lateral flow device) test packs. In Brighton & Hove you can currently collect kits from: •

Jubilee Library – Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday 10am–5pm, and Sunday 11am–5pm

Hove Town Hall – Monday to Saturday 8am–5pm, and Wednesday until 8pm

There’s no need to book and over the coming weeks more sites will be added. Only people over 18 should use Community and Pharmacy Collect. People can

Order online: If you can’t access tests through the other routes, you can order test kits online at www.gov.uk/order-coronavirus-rapid-lateral-flow-tests or by calling 119, which will be delivered to your home. Community testing: Tests can be booked at participating pharmacies or at a testing centre at Hove Town Hall. These tests are taken under supervision of a member of staff who will process your result within 30 minutes. They must be booked in advance at: brighton-hove.gov.uk/communitytesting If you have symptoms, book a PCR test: Anyone with symptoms of Covid should not use LFD test kits. You must book a PCR test online at www.gov.uk/get-coronavirus-test or by calling 119.

GENERAL

Around 1 in 3 people who have Covid show no symptoms. As lockdown measures begin to relax, regular rapid testing is fundamental to helping us quickly spot positive cases and stop any outbreaks. If we all get into the habit of taking regular tests, reporting our results and self-isolating if we’re positive, we can get back to seeing the people we love and doing the things we enjoy.

Brighton news…

Brighton Brighton Comedy Garden Consort chamber choir returns in July The well-known local chamber choir Brighton Consort is aiming to resume live rehearsals from May 19th - initially to be held under all the necessary Covid-19 restrictions – with a view to a public performance later in the summer.

Brighton Comedy Garden is returning to Preston Park from 14-18 July with the ultimate remedy for stand-up lovers from Brighton and beyond.

The programme of mostly 16th century choral music will be entitled “Seven Degrees of Separation”. It will feature works by much loved composers of the period, including William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, Josquin, Palestrina and Victoria.

Tickets are now on sale for a very special open-air comedy extravaganza featuring stand-up king Dara Ó Briain, multi-award winning Sara Pascoe, observational wizard Josh Widdicombe, the riotous Tom Allen, plus Alan Davies, Nish Kumar, Aisling Bea, Phil Wang, Nina Conti, Reginald D Hunter, Ed Gamble, Sindhu Vee and many (many) more.

The choir is keen to recruit additional singers with an interest in early music so if you think you might like to join Brighton Consort for these rehearsals and the performance please contact the Chairman, Mike Clemens (Mike@brightonconsort.org. uk). There are currently vacancies in all voice parts. More information on Brighton Consort can be found on the group’s website: <https:// www.brightonconsort.org.uk>.

This year’s specially redesigned event swaps Big Top tent for an awesome outdoor stage and a fully seated open-air theatre bursting with pop-up bars and local street-food heroes. For the full line-up and tickets, visit brightoncomedygarden.co.uk J.H. BRICKWORK Our Services include

74 Great news for early music lovers…

Brighton Early Music Festival Summer Season 2021 Thanks to a grant from the Government’s Culture Recovery Fund, Brighton Early Music Festival will be staging a Summer Season of outdoor events in June, bringing live music back to Brighton audiences and providing much-needed employment for freelance musicians and other artists. Most events will take place at Royal Spa Nursery School in Queen’s Park, where audiences will be able to bring their own chairs and picnic blankets, and enjoy the performance in a socially distanced outdoor setting.

Most events will take place at Royal Spa Nursery School in Queen’s Park, where audiences will be able to bring their own chairs and picnic blankets, and enjoy the performance in a socially distanced outdoor setting. The BREMF Summer Season will comprise seven exciting programmes combining music, dance and storytelling under the Festival’s 2021 theme of Myths and Legends. Events will take place on Saturday 5 & Sunday 6 June, Saturday 12 & Sunday 13 June, Sunday 20 June and Saturday 3 July, with performers including the Flauguissimo Ensemble, Lux Musicae London, Fieri Consort, Pocket Sinfonia and Monteverdi String Band. All events will feature the Festival’s trademark of making music from the past 1,000 years relevant and exciting for audiences of today. Full details of the events will be published on the Festival website at bremf. org.uk imminently, with tickets on general sale from Monday 10 May, also at bremf.org.uk. Capacity will be limited

because of social distancing, so early booking is recommended. Deborah Roberts, Artistic Director of Brighton Early Music Festival, said: “Our Summer Season at Royal Spa will enable us to explore myths and ancient legends from a range of traditions including North India, with all events staged live but also filmed for broadcast via our digital channels later in the year. We are determined to continue to grow and develop the Festival in new ways in response to the challenges of the past year, and this new grant enables us to provide vital support for artists who have in many cases faced months without work. We can’t wait to share music live with our audiences once again!”

RIP Prince Philip...

Prince Philip We were very sad to hear of the passing of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in April. This photo shows him at the official opening of the British Airways i360 in October 2016. He enjoyed views across Sussex from the glass observation pod and un-

veiled a plaque which is on display in the beach building. Photo courtesy of British Airways i360
