FIVEWAYS

It has been quite a journey with many twists and turns, with the most dramatic happening in 2020 with the pandemic and a total restructuring of the business and the creation of The Brightonian and its sister publication The Hovarian. Six months in, these new magazines have quickly taken root in their respective communities with lots of great feedback from residents and businesses alike. Please keep sending in your suggestions.

NORTH LAINE

This November marks our sixteenth year producing local magazines in Brighton and Hove. It all started with the first edition of The Fiveways Directory back in November 2004.

4 Meet the founder of Mothers Uncovered…

Queen’s Park person… Maggie Gordon-Walker Maggie Gordon-Walker lives in Queen’s Park. She is the director/founder of Mothers Uncovered, a creative support network for mothers. She is also a writer, actress and comedian. How long have you lived in Queen’s Park? Since 2007. How did you come to set up Mothers Uncovered? Because when I became a mum, I felt incredibly isolated, invisible and lonely and others I spoke to felt the same. Everything seemed overwhelmingly hard, but I gave the impression I was fine. All the groups seemed to be entirely baby-focused and I felt a place was needed for mothers that stemmed the gap between informal dropins, not always suitable for discussing difficult or painful issues, and the medical scrutiny of statutory services.

You are also part of Basic Income South East. How would that work?

News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

A playground fit for the future on the way... Anyone who’s visited the Queen’s Park children’s playground recently would be forgiven for thinking that the local authority has given up on it. Some of the equipment has been fenced off for months, while the paintwork on other pieces is looking in urgent need of a lick of paint. But the good news is that far from giving up, the Council hired a Play Development Officer. Since his appointment in August, Steve Hyder has hit the ground running, visiting all 52 of the Council’s playgrounds to conduct detailed condition surveys and prioritise which need urgent attention. The appointment is interesting. Steve, who recently met with Friends of Queen’s Park Committee members and local City Councillors Clare Rainey and Nick Childs, describes himself as a “poacher turned gamekeeper”. Not only has he worked for playground equipment suppliers, he has experience as an operational inspector for the Register of Play Inspectors International too. So he knows a thing or two about Health and Safety. With that background it was unsurprising to learn that some of the equipment in the playground will be removed as soon as possible. This will mean that, for a short period, the site will resemble a smile urgently in need of a new set of dentures. Happily that phase should not last long. Not wishing to over promise, there’s a small possibility, that, if funding, including Section 106 monies from local developments, can be identified, a refurbishment programme costing more than six figures could be completed by the end of the year. Steve’s boss Paul Campbell says, ‘Whilst this may seem like a long way off, we would rather be cautious with our promises than unrealistic. We have over 30 playgrounds across the city that all need TLC.’ So what can Queen’s Park residents expect? “It won’t be a cookie cutter job,”

Play Development Officer Steve Hyder and Cllr Clare Rainey (who allocated her ward budget for use on the playground) with Lynda Ginart, Chris Lowe and Caroline Burnard of the Friends of Queen’s Park

Steve assured Friends of Queen’s Park members. “Replacing like for like would be the easy option. I am keen that we take account of latest best practice to reconfigure the playground, as well as introduce new elements.” A topographical site survey to inform the design is the ideal. “Design options must reflect the natural environment in terms of material and colours used,” Steve reassured the Friends Group members and local Councillors. The other guiding principle that will dictate the design options, about which the local community will be invited to comment, is long term sustainability. Money is tight and kit needs to last and have low maintenance costs too. Geoffrey Bowden

Theresa McIvor Honour for Simon Charleton awarded MBE Simon Charleton of Queen’s Park has been awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours, for services to young people with special educational needs during Covid-19.

The honours were delayed this year due to the crisis. Simon is the Chief Executive of St John’s College in Walpole Road. He said: “This is down to the amazing, dedicated work of our staff. Sadly, the pandemic is still with us.”

5G mast approved An application by H3G to install a 20m 5G phone mast on the south side of Eastern Road/Edward Street, opposite Park Street and Tillstone Street, has been approved by the council. A council report said that the mast would exceed the height of the nearby street furniture, and so it would be prominent in the streetscene; however, nearby trees would mitigate its visual impact and it would not harm the character of the area significantly enough to warrant refusal.

Theresa McIvor, a volunteer at the Volunteering Matters LifeLines charity, has been awarded an MBE. Before the pandemic Theresa volunteered in the LifeLines office as well as at the Brooke Mead Assisted Living Facility in Albion Street. Volunteering Matters LifeLines supports the 50+ age group, offering activities to reduce loneliness and improve health. Since the pandemic started Theresa has been answering calls from isolated vulnerable older people who needed help with shopping and collecting prescriptions. She explained: “My job was, and still is, to be a friendly voice on the other end of the phone offering advice and reassurance, spending time with each person having a chat so they didn’t feel so alone.” In addition, she runs a virtual coffee morning over the phone. Theresa said: “I was so shocked when I heard I had been awarded an MBE for my service to the community because it was so unexpected. There are so many thousands of other people out there who have done such a great job supporting their communities, that I feel deeply honoured and humbled to have been recognised in this way.” If you would be interested in finding out more about the activities Volunteering Matters LifeLines offer, please call 01273 688117 or email lifelines@volunteeringmatters.org.uk

13 Councillor news from David Gibson, Green councillor for Hanover & Elm Grove…

When I wrote my last column two Labour councillors had just resigned making the Greens the largest party and handing them control of the council. Since then my focus has been a bit more on running the council. I am very involved with housing and finance. In terms of housing we are still providing an offer of accommodation for all rough sleepers; we have secured a grant of £3.5 million from the Government to help us avoid their return to the streets. The grant was the largest achieved by any council except Greater London. Despite the pandemic we are still pressing hard for our joint (with Labour) target of 800 additional council homes by 2023. I am hopeful this will be boosted by our new plan to acquire 173 rented homes for the council from the joint housing venture with Hyde. Crucially these homes will now be let at significantly lower rents, under these new arrangements. LIGHTING

In terms of finance, the Greens are seeking to reduce the severity cuts in response to the pandemic and instead intend to use up to 40% of council reserves to protect services for people. These reserves have been set aside for a rainy day and quite frankly we are experiencing a thunderstorm at the moment. The money will be replenished once the worst impacts of the pandemic are over and the sun shines again. Locally, it is heartening that, following hard work and planning, a new sustainable community food co-op for Hanover and Elm Grove will be up and running in November. I’m impressed by the dedication of community volunteers on the Phoenix and Pankhurst estates who have made this vital resource a reality, in these difficult times. I am supporting the campaign to make the Free Butt an asset of community value. The community want to keep the building for community activities and for social housing and are opposing the developers’ planning appeal against the council decision not to grant planning permission. I continue to organise painting out graffiti and bulb planting sessions with GoodGym and local volunteers once a month in the ward. If you have an idea about somewhere that could be improved (or better still can help) please get in touch. As I write this it looks like we could be facing another lockdown. Do stay safe and once it is all over let’s build back better (fairer and greener). David.Gibson@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Brighton and Hove Climate Assembly... The last few months have seen huge changes to our lives. For many Brighton and Hove residents, focusing on getting through, day to day, has been the only option. This has been a painful time for many in which it hasn’t felt easy or natural to think too far ahead. Now, as we take our first tentative steps out of lockdown, it feels like a good time to collectively reflect: What do we truly value? What should we lose and what should we take forward from the ways our lives have altered? The City Council are providing residents with an opportunity to think in the longer term – to consider the kind of city that we want to live in – and to have a real influence on making that collective vision a reality. Brighton and Hove’s first “Climate Assembly” kicked off on 22nd September. This is a local experiment in what is called “deliberative” democracy – essentially an attempt to bring local residents more deeply into political decision making. The Climate Assembly will be hosted online, over five sessions this autumn, with 50 residents that make up a representative sample of the city’s population taking part. Those 50 residents will learn about the challenges, opportunities and trade-offs that the city faces in tackling climate change. They will thrash out the options and, together, come up with a list of recommendations for the Council to take forward. By its very nature, a citizens assembly of this kind needs to represent all of Brighton and Hove’s residents. That means young people, working families, older generations, people of all professions, income groups and from all neighbourhoods. This is an opportunity to put forward your ideas to address the climate crisis and make

Brighton and Hove a cleaner, greener and more liveable place. Do you need more help accessing the local shops? Do you want to see the seafront free of cars? Do you have an idea that can help to reduce traffic and increase space for people to gather and children to play in your community? How to get involved: Climate Conversations Brighton - this is the dedicated online space for people in the city to share views and be part of the wider conversation about the Climate Assembly and its focus on transport policy for the city. It’s quick and easy to register. The focus of the discussion at the moment is: “How can we step up actions to reduce transport-related emissions in the city?” Ideas and responses are already being shared. It would be great if more people were getting involved and sharing ideas. https://climateconversationsbrighton.uk. engagementhq.com/

17 Hanover news…

Hanover is to be transformed into a real-life advent calendar once again. Each day, in the run-up to Christmas, homes on one local street will be invited to create window displays that glow with festive spirit.

Parklets Green councillors joined residents in Hanover and Elm Grove to relax in a ‘pop-up parklet’, a temporary mini-outdoor space with chairs, cushions, a rug, plants and decorations.

We’re on the lookout for people to be street reps, to organise a date for their street and share it with their neighbours. To find out more, join the Hanover Advent Calendar Facebook group or contact: hanoveradventcalendar@gmail.com Cllr Elaine Hills

Hanover Queens WI Hanover Queens WI are meeting again on Zoom every second Thursday of the month at 7.30pm. Next meeting: Thursday November 12th with Wendy Guest on Mindfulness… something to help us through the winter months. Now is a good time for new members as it is only £10.75 until April 2021. Do give us a try and for a free first session contact us at wihanoverqueens@gmail.com or via Facebook. The WI is not just about cakes and crafts but a voice for women to take forward issues that concern us and to be heard at government level. Hanover Queens WI

The parklet, at the back of Lewes Street, was created by laying out a large piece of AstroTurf. Councillor Elaine Hills, who organised the event and convenes the Hanover Liveable Neighbourhood group, said: “Parklets are an ideal way to increase the number of welcoming outdoor spaces at which neighbours can gather. And with people being less able to gather indoors due to Covid-19 restrictions, we need to look for more ways in which we can socialise safely.” Further pop-up parklets are planned at other locations in the ward. Green Councillors now want to explore how parklets can be included in the Hanover ‘Liveable Neighbourhood’ scheme, the first pilot ‘low traffic neighbourhood’ initiative designed to curb residential traffic to be given the go-ahead by the city council.

Madeira Drive reopening... At a meeting of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 29th September, councillors agreed that Madeira Drive should be reopened to one-way traffic, with a two-way cycle lane, more space for pedestrians and an increase in parking bays for blue badge holders. KEMPTOWN

Madeira Drive was closed to motor vehicles in April to give residents more space to exercise in the early stages of the Covid-19 lockdown. Councillors approved the reopening as part of an update on the city’s Covid-19 Urgent Response Transport Action Plan. 25 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Kemp Town Football Club Back Row ( left to right) AV Stephens; HC Tattershall; AG Fuller; G Cotton; GG Christian Centre Row EH Davis; SB Christian (Honorary Secretary); W Turner (Capt); AC Stevens (Vice-Captain); WHR Davis Front Row ( left to right) RE Shoesmith; HE Bowley; H Winterborn; S Hilton Sports teams usually have their team photographs taken outside, but this time the Kemp Town Football Club has chosen to go into a photographic studio for a special occasion. No doubt it was their becoming champions of Brighton, Hove and District League, Division II in 1920, the year following the amalgamation of Brighton Football League with Hove FL. The team have washed and dressed for the occasion with clean kits, hair and faces. Most have managed to lace up their training tops although three have lost – or deliberately discarded - the neck laces, and boots are still a bit grubby. The goalkeeper, A Fuller, stands centre back in a turtle-neck jersey. The three men in suits, A Stevens, E Davis and W Davis, may have been founders, coaches or managers; we don’t know. In the front row, H Bowley holds the shield, H Winterborn sits behind the cup and between them is the football. The photograph (ACC12371/1) came to The Keep in a miscellaneous collection of

school magazines, theatre programmes and cricket handbooks belonging to George Hood. George, a nursing officer, was born in 1932, and lived and worked in Brighton. Perhaps our photograph was given to him by a friend or relative - he certainly left no information as to how it came into his collection. It’s impossible not to speculate about this unusual photograph, unusual because it shows a football team created so soon after the First World War. One can’t help wondering about the experiences of these young men. Had any of them been to the front? Had they survived physical wounding or suffered the mental and emotional trauma that we know affected so many returning troops? Perhaps we can only admire the determination to get back to a semblance of normality. Whatever the individuals may have suffered, in this photograph they are showing us that it’s the team that counts. www.thekeep.info

27 News from Green councillor Amy Heley…

Councillor News for Preston Park ward councillors hosted an online meeting with residents and our local PCSOs to discuss the recent spike of crimes in Preston and Blakers Park. One of the outcomes of this meeting was a plan to set up a forum where residents, councillors and the police can discuss public safety issues and find ways to resolve them in the Fiveways and Preston Park area. Please get in touch if you’d like to get involved and hear more.

School Streets at Downs Junior School: Downs Junior School is taking part in the council’s new School Streets programme, which closes roads outside schools for drop off and pick up times. This allows for more space to aid social distancing, as well as improving the air quality and

providing more safe space for walking, cycling and scooting to and from school. This exciting new scheme relies on volunteers to help with the closure, so if you are able to help, please contact the school.

Elm disease: This year has been particularly bad for our elm trees, as we are seeing a huge increase of elm disease, that is resulting in elm trees dying across the Preston Park ward and whole city. Councillors are grateful to the volunteers from Plant Your Postcode for creating posters that raise awareness of the disease, and we are working with the council teams to increase awareness and stop the spread of elm disease. Elm disease spreads through beetles in the bark of the trees, so if you buy logs, it is really important to make sure they are not elm. If you are unsure of what your logs are, the council are able to check them for you get in touch for more information.

lors took part in September’s Keep Brighton and Hove Tidy campaign, with a community clean up in Preston Park. After the increase of litter we saw in lockdown, it was great to see residents across the city come together to keep our green spaces clean.

Electric vehicle charging points: Many residents are delighted to see new electric vehicle charging points across the ward. This is part of a city-wide rollout of over 200 new charging points. Over the next few months, more will become electric-only bays so that it is easier for those who have electric vehicles to charge them.

29 News from a local group…

Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods We had hoped by now to have resumed our monthly work sessions in a socially distanced way as some independent groups are doing, but unfortunately as we work under the Council’s Ranger Service they are bound by the government’s Coronavirus rules and have told us it’s not yet safe for our volunteers. Our committee members have regularly been walking through the woods and are pleased to report that the incidences of camp fires and litter have decreased considerably, possibly because the weather has now changed, but we’d like to think that our notices alerting the public to the danger of fires in the woods helped. We were alerted to some trip hazards and are pleased to say the Council has now removed the tree stumps. We have also been working with the Council to try and resolve a problem that has arisen since the Council leased Hollingbury Golf Course. It is not clear if the hazel coppice we planted in the National Park area of woodland and the butterfly glade we created on a redundant golf tee a decade ago are within the boundary of the golf course or not. Our volunteers have put in a lot of hard work to encourage wildlife in both these areas so we will be very disappointed if we have to give these up. Sadly, Ash Dieback has

The Millennium yew tree reached the ash trees on the golf course and it is only a matter of time before the trees in our woods become infected. We will monitor them for signs of the disease and advise the Council if they become a safety issue. It is now 20 years since we planted our Millennium Yew tree on the edge of Snowdrop glade and when it was still fairly small a mysterious person would decorate it every Christmas. It is now well over 20 feet tall (6 metres+) and looking magnificent. We hope you will find time to walk through the woods this winter and look out for the fungi on the fallen dead wood and the wood pigeons gorging themselves on the ivy berries, and perhaps challenge yourself to identify the leafless trees: much harder! We hope by the time the snowdrops start to push up through the soil next February that a vaccine will have been developed and we can get back to normal. Enjoy the woods and follow us on Twitter and Facebook and check out our website (www.fhbw.org.uk) for any changes regarding our work sessions.

37 News from the council…

Latest government figures show that 20,280 European Union citizens living in Brighton & Hove have now applied to stay in the UK after the Brexit transition period ends on 31 December. As a consequence of the 2016 referendum, when 52% of the British population voted to leave the EU, all EU citizens, as well as those from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, need to apply to the EU settlement scheme if they want to protect their right to continue living, working and accessing healthcare in the UK from next year. Cllr Marianna Ebel, chair of the council’s Brexit Working Group, said: “In Brighton & Hove our message is clear, we want our EU residents to stay and we will support them in continuing to make the city their home.” If you know of Cllr Marianna Ebel someone who is eligible who hasn’t yet applied, please encourage them to do so at: www.gov.uk/ settled-status-eu-citizens-families. Bin Consultation The council has launched a public consultation on what should be done about the hundreds of business waste bins that line our streets and pavements. At present traders can leave their bins outside their premises all day. But with so many trade bins being placed on our pavements the council is receiving mounting complaints about them blocking pavements and roads, attracting fly-tipping and vermin, and causing problems with social distancing. It’s a very tricky issue, so the council wants to find a way forward that works for everyone. The consultation sets out the issue and then gives a number of options on what can be done to keep the trade street bins to a minimum. The main idea is to introduce ‘Time-banded Collections’ (or T-Zones) in the city centre and areas where there is high footfall, narrow pavements and heavy traffic. The city centre has been divided into 13 of these T-Zones. T-Zones would mean in certain areas of the city, businesses would only be allowed to have their bins and/or bags of waste on the highway between 6am and 9am for collection purposes. The consultation ends on Monday 24 November. You can find it at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ rubbish-recycling-and-streets/ commercial-bins/ J.H. BRICKWORK Our Services include

39 A new book for local history enthusiasts‌

Ghosts of the past Author Calvin Partridge has produced a new colour 40-page book merging pictures of Brighton today with those taken from exactly the same spot up to 150 years before. Finally the Victorian cameras were bulky so photographers would often mount their tripods on a horse and cart. It was then easy to stop in the road to take a picture in the light traffic, but the same was not true for me struggling to take the same picture from 10 feet in the air in the middle of a road at Seven Dials!

41 A local charity supporting the families of prisoners…

Sussex Prisoners’ Families De wasn’t expecting her son to go to jail. It was his first offence and she had been assured by his legal team that his previous good record would go in his favour. So when he was given a 5 year sentence, her world caved in.

A Google search put De in contact with Sussex Prisoners’ Families – an organisation set up in 2013 to support the 5,000 families a year in Sussex who have someone sent to prison. We support families practically and emotionally, providing one to one advice, support groups and outings for children and families feeling the strain. People come to us with different needs. Some are wearily familiar with the criminal justice system. Others are brand new – bewildered by the terrifying and baffling new world they have been thrown into. Most are consumed with crippling anxiety about their loved ones behind bars. Problems range from the basics such as which prison they have gone to, to worries about the prisoners’ health to advice about visiting. Many callers to our advice line are parents whose sons have mental health or learning difficulties, terrified about their chances of coping in what can be an unforgiving system.

Charity director Sam Hart (centre) with Hove MP Peter Kyle and court volunteers at HMP Lewes visitors’ centre

how to broach the issue of imprisonment, leaving children with an unclear or false idea of where their parent has gone. “I just googled prisons and found all these horrible pictures of brutality and bars,” recalls one young person whose dad was sent to prison. “I was terrified.” Small wonder that prisoners’ children are 2-3 times more likely to develop mental health problems than their peers. As Christmas approaches and the loss of a loved-one becomes harder to bear, our hard-working, compassionate team will be on hand to support families through the struggle.

Covid-19 has exacerbated the problem. To reduce the chances of the infection spreading within the system, prison visits Sam Hart (Director) were stopped for several months. Although they have now resumed, they are www.sussexprisonersfamilies.org.uk at reduced capacity and many families are Facebook.com/sussexprisonersfamilies choosing instead to move to video visits. 01273 499843 Children are suffering too. The loss of their mum or dad combined with stigma which can result in bullying at school is hard for children to take. This is combined with the fact that parents sometimes struggle with Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

43 City news…

Brighton & Hove City Council’s Planning Committee, meeting on 30th September, voted by 7 to 3 against a new scheme for a development of up to 28 storeys at Brighton Marina. The proposed development at Brighton Marina

However, an appeal against the non-determination of the application was submitted by the developer on 17th September, so the decision now rests with the Planning Inspectorate. Had the decision remained with the committee, they decided that they would have refused planning permission.

Project Wenceslas Brighton Lions Club are once again launching Project Wenceslas, to help combat fuel poverty. People who receive the annual Winter Fuel Payment and feel they do not need it are invited to donate the amount to Brighton Lions and every penny will go towards helping people in the city to alleviate their fuel poverty. People in difficulty will be referred to Brighton Lions and direct applications will not be accepted.

Donations can be made at www.brightonlions.org. uk or cheques payable to Brighton Lions Wenceslas There is already an existing planning permission for 853 should be sent to Brighton flats on the site in a development of up to 40 storeys. The buildings would include up to 1,000 flats, as well as commercial floorspace, in Phases 2 and 3 of the development at the Outer Harbour.

Many councillors on the committee felt that the planning application was unacceptable, the design was poor and there was a complete failure to provide affordable housing. However, Cllr Tracey Hill, who was in favour of the proposals, said: “We need to increase the density of our housing if we are going to address the crisis that this city has.” Have a local editorial item? 45 A series of history walks created by the people who live here…

Discover Brighton A unique series of free online history walks have been created by local community publisher QueenSpark Books, giving locals and visitors a chance to step into Brighton’s past.

The nine trails are based on QueenSpark’s newest books, as well as some old favourites. Each themed walk is generated from the memories of people who have lived, worked or visited Brighton over the past 100 years. All the walks are digitised, enabling you to follow the route on your web-enabled smartphone or tablet, with historic photographs, texts and audio recordings at the points of interest. Take a pleasant stroll along the seafront to hear about the West Pier in its heyday and strange things hauled up in fishing nets; discover what it was like to be gay in the 1950s and 60s and what life was like in the city during the War; explore Brighton’s lost theatres, cinemas and shops, and hear from those whose ‘slum’ homes were demolished to make way for Churchill Square; visit the city’s alternative spaces, peek into the terraced homes of the rich and poor, and discover Brighton’s unsung heroes. Hannah, a volunteer with the project, said: ‘I learned a lot about the history of Brighton’s buildings that I had no idea of before!

They will definitely make me see the city differently in the future.’ QueenSpark, the UK’s longest-running community publisher, has been documenting and archiving the lives of local people since 1972. The charity’s Development Director, John Riches, said: ‘No other city in the UK has such a unique ‘people’s history’ as that held by QueenSpark Books. It is testament to the thousands of local volunteers who, over nearly 50 years, have collected these stories – and the hundreds of people that have told them. We’re delighted that we can now make this history freely available to locals and tourists to access as they walk around the city.’ The walks are available from the book publisher’s website and can be accessed from this link: https://queensparkbooks.org.uk/ discover-brighton/ The walks form part of QueenSpark’s Archives Alive! project, which is supported by the National Heritage Lottery Fund, and we thank the players for their support.

47 City news…

Cinema Closures On 9th October, Cineworld temporarily closed its chain of cinemas until further notice, including its cinema at Brighton Marina. This is due to a delay in the release of some big commercial films, such as the latest James Bond film “No Time to Die”. At present there is no set date for re-opening.

Artists Open Houses 2020 Artists Open Houses is to return for a four-week festival from 21st November to 13th December.

GENERAL

A statement from Cineworld says: “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and will communicate our future plans to resume operations once film studios are able to bring their pipeline of major movie releases back to the big screen. We can assure you that once a line-up of movie releases is confirmed, we will be ready to re-open our cinemas, as we did in July, with the same safety levels you have already seen while at the same time keeping the great experience that you are used to getting from us.” Picturehouse Cinemas are owned by Cineworld, so those cinemas have also sadly been shut temporarily, including The Duke of York’s in Preston Road, which opened in 1910 and is one of the oldest cinemas in the world, and Duke’s at Komedia in Gardner Street.

The festival will incorporate aspects of both the (re-scheduled) AOH May and Christmas festivals, Some Odeon cinemas are to close during the week but so that you can enjoy both will stay open from Friday to Sunday. At the time of writing, great art and a Christmas Odeon Brighton on West Street was still open all week. shopping experience away from the High Street. Visitors will have the opportunity to buy original artwork direct from the artist. There is also a new online strand. Visit aoh.org.uk for full details.

49 City news…

Whole Estate Plan Pavement Weeds Brighton & Hove City Council is putting together a Whole Estate Plan which will set out a vision for how the downland will be managed over the next 100 years.

A petition signed by 200 people was brought to the Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 29th September, calling for the council to effectively manage weeds.

To help create the plan, the council is seeking the views of residents, groups and organisations in the city and will be launching a public consultation in November.

The council’s City Downland Estate consists of around 12,500 acres and is mostly situated within the South Downs National Park. The Estate was initially acquired by the Council around 100 years ago with the aim of protecting the town’s water supply and controlling development. The new plan will refresh the previous City Downland Policy, created in 2006, which resulted in significant improvements including an increase in public access. It will include all council owned land within the South Downs National Park, the Agricultural Estate, parks and land used for leisure, sport and recreation. To find out more, visit: www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/CDE

Conservative councillor Lee Wares also tabled a question on what was being done to clear the weeds and whether sufficient resource would be made available to repair pavements damaged by weeds. The committee chair, Green Party councillor Amy Heley, replied that a plan had been developed in 2019 to end the use of pesticides in parks, open spaces, pavements and highways. This means that manual techniques are now used for weed removal. Cllr Heley said that most of the worst affected areas had been cleared. However, the weeding schedule had been badly impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and there would be a review at the end of the weeding season in October. New brushes for the mechanical sweepers will be trialled and a report will be brought to committee in the new year. To ask for excessive weeds to be removed from public land, call 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove.gov.uk.
