4 News from Theresa Fowler, Labour councillor for Hollingdean & Stanmer…
Hollingdean & Stanmer Councillor News As ever, there’s been a lot happening around Hollingdean and Stanmer, as well as around the city more widely, and I’ve been busy trying to help residents with their issues as much as I can. A lot of the problems that come up are connected to housing, particularly the shortage of genuinely affordable flats and houses and some really serious issues in the private rented sector. The community union Acorn have done some fantastic work defending tenants recently, including here in H&S where there was a really positive outcome to a stressful situation in Thompson Road, proving what a bit of organised people power can achieve. As a member of Housing Committee, I was also really pleased to support Acorn by persuading the administration to affirm the council’s determination to join the fifty-plus other local authorities who already have landlord licensing.
So, I’ll sign off with a plea to all fireworks lovers: enjoy your celebration, but please consider your neighbours, friends and animals too. Organised displays are bigger, brighter, more social and safer, but if you must have an event in your garden, please buy the quieter fireworks that are available, and give your neighbours plenty of warning, thank you! Theresa

Another issue much on my mind at this time of year is the problems caused for some by fireworks. Back in January, I proposed a Notice of Motion at council supporting an RSPCA campaign and calling for action to reduce the impact of fireworks on both animals and vulnerable people. The motion was passed, with the
council calling on organisers of public displays to advertise them well in advance, allowing residents to take precautions for any friends, family or animals they need to protect. We also called for a public awareness campaign around the negative impacts fireworks can have, and what can be done by all of us to help mitigate any problems.

Friends of Hollingbury & Burstead Woods At the time of writing Brighton & Hove City Council still hasn’t appointed an officer to deal with the Ash Dieback disease so we are still unable to work in the woods until a strategy has been formulated. We had arranged a full work session for volunteers to work on the chalk banks and north hedge on the 2nd October but this time the elements conspired against us with a forecast of strong winds and heavy rain so we reluctantly decided to cancel: the forecast proved to be right so we made the correct decision. We hope to run our November and December work sessions but will be asking our volunteers to sign up in advance so that we can plan for any alterations if the Covid situation changes. Please check our website (www. fhbw.org.uk) or follow us on FB for the latest information. Now that the clocks have gone back and the evenings are well and truly drawing in some of us feel a sense of melancholy and perhaps don’t venture out so often as the days get colder, but if you can, wrap up warmly and get your ‘nature fix’. Although our group has been prevented from working in the woods due to the Ash Dieback situation the Council has not closed the woods to the public so enjoy the autumn colour, but please be sensible and avoid the woods if strong winds are forecast. Many of the trees are still in full leaf and as the chlorophyll breaks down the carotenoids are revealed which produce the wonderful reds, oranges and golds on our deciduous trees. This important part of the trees’ lifecycle is known as senescence from the Latin ‘to grow old’ but unlike human cells that die the
trees use the winter period to recycle the nutrients, predominantly nitrogen, which they process and store ready to produce new growth hormones to fuel the buds in the spring. This dormant period gives the trees a head start over annual plants that completely die at the end of their growing season; the stored energy in the roots and shoots allows the tree to build on the previous season’s growth producing our large veteran trees which can support so many creatures both great and small. Our woods may look as though they’re sleeping but in reality they’re preparing themselves for spring just like we are preparing for getting our volunteers back working.

Fiveways Fireworks in traders parking Preston Park petition Wednesday 3 November at 8pm
Fiveways traders presented a petition to the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 21 September.
Coles Funfairs hope to stage a free firework display in Preston Park on 3rd November (subject to council clearance). A funfair, bar and catering will be open from 4-10pm, with fireworks at 8pm.
The petition, signed by 650 people, asked the council to overturn a decision to change the one-hour free parking on Preston Drove and Ditchling Road back to pay and display parking. Clair Letton of Wigwam Toys, speaking on behalf of traders, told the committee: “We cannot survive in the face of Amazon, supermarkets and chain stores if it’s difficult, unappealing or inconvenient for our customers to get to us and to use us.” She said customers were not willing to pay for one hour’s parking just to buy milk and go to the post office. The council’s response was that the changes in free parking to paid parking were agreed by councillors in early 2021 as part of budget-saving proposals. They said: “We do appreciate that any increase in parking charges can be challenging for all concerned and none of us enjoy having to increase parking charges across the city. As a council we have had to make significant savings for the current 21/22 financial year and these changes were introduced to ensure there is better enforcement of these bays to allow more short-term parking to support local businesses.” The committee agreed to note the petition and Cllr Nancy Platts proposed an impact assessment of the policy’s effect on small businesses, which was agreed.

10 Sad news from Artists Open Houses…
Ned Hoskins Ned Hoskins, painter and founder of the Artists Open Houses, has died at the age of 81. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Ned’s style evolved into bold, colourful abstracts inspired by the world around him. In 1981, frustrated by the lack of visual arts in the Brighton Festival, Ned flung open the doors of his home to the public and the Fiveways Open Houses were born. The following year, other local artists began to open their houses and the phenomenon began to grow. Ned believed art is for everybody. He wanted ordinary people to be able to view and own original art. By removing the invisible barriers that kept people out of art galleries and inviting people into his home, Ned brought art to the people. Ned’s art has sold around the world, but the thing he was most proud of was the legacy of the Artists Open Houses.

Hanover & Elm Grove Councillor News As I write this the city is suffering from a bin strike, triggered by unhappiness expressed by drivers about being moved more often to different rounds. The strike is also set in the difficult national context of the HGV driver shortage, which has put more pressure on drivers and the service. Combined with the pandemic, it’s clear that there are real challenges affecting the Cityclean service, that has a history of industrial relations problems going back many years. In the short term, I hope that by the time you read this a solution has been found both to the immediate grievances, but also, a positive proposal found on pay. At the time of writing in mid-October councillors at a meeting agreed to pave a way forward in the dispute, based on getting good value for council services but also addressing low pay for staff across the council. We’re hopeful that the GMB will consider the latest offer. Increasing the pay of the lowest paid council workers fits with our manifesto pledges, that firstly led to the introduction of a living wage for council staff and secondly involves a commitment to reduce the ratio between the highest paid and lowest paid council officers. This ratio is now under 10:1 and falling. With fuel and living costs soaring, this pressure is set to rise. Despite the difficult and challenging bin strike there are some positives to report in other areas. Our proposal to roll out a self-funding covered bike storage facility is now out to consultation and we are expecting that we might see the first bike stores installed in our area over the next six months.
In the field of private rented housing we have now recruited more enforcement staff capacity to deal with bad landlords. These workers will be in action in November. It is also pleasing that we have £2.5m to help unlock sites to build new affordable council housing -providing a boost to our ambitious plans to help address the affordable housing shortage across the city. Finally it is worth mentioning that the Hanover and Elm Grove Communities Forum are considering a petition to ask the council to designate our area as a ‘community council’. This would give us access to more resources, but at this stage it is important to feed back your views. David Gibson

15 News from the council…
People living in Hanover and Tarner are being invited to get involved in a project that will help shape the city’s first liveable neighbourhood. The project will create a liveable neighbourhood planned and designed to reduce motor traffic cutting through residential streets, also known as rat-running. It could also help to open up streets for more community use, green space and active travel. The council now want local residents to get involved by giving us their ideas for how to improve the area. Using a new website -climateconversationsbrighton. uk.engagementhq.com/liveable-hanover-tarner - created for the project, residents are able to show the council exactly what they would like to see, identify problem areas and things that could be added or improved. The council will also be holding a series of outdoor events where residents can share their views. This information will help the council develop their plans before putting them out for formal consultation, most likely early in 2022.
For more information or to request a paper copy of the questionnaire, email transport. projects@brighton-hove.gov.uk or call 01273 290390 and leave a message. Engagement events are planned in November as follows and others may be added: Thursday 4 Nov, 3-5pm Elm Grove School Sun 7 Nov, 1-3pm Chates Farm Court/Albion Hill Tuesday 23 Nov, 3pm – 5pm Carlton Hill School
Hanover news…
Free children’s books Richard Sinclair, the award-winning children’s book author featured in the July edition of The Brightonian, has free copies of his books to give away. Richard, based in Hanover, has a few hundred copies of his books sitting in storage, due to unforeseen complications of Brexit / Covid. Rather than gathering dust, he would prefer them to be enjoyed, so is looking for a school or a suitable children’s charity who may be
able to use them, perhaps as an early Christmas present. They are beautifully illustrated board books suitable for primary age children. Richard can be contacted directly at: SinclairOnLine@gmail.com. Serious enquiries only please.

17 News from Hanover Action…
Want to help the council do the right thing locally on climate? Here are four things you can do. Facing climate anxiety is a real challenge. In November, governments from across the world gather at COP26 in Glasgow, to discuss how to tackle the climate emergency. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed and stuck in the face of such big issues. At Hanover Action we are motivated by the “think global, act local” idea. We want to share four tangible, positive ideas. We encourage you to get involved! 1. Ask the council about the local plan The council published a programme in spring with the ambitious target of being a carbon neutral city by 2030. You can keep councillors’ attention focused by asking a question at one of the many committee meetings throughout the year. Fifteen minutes are reserved for questions at every meeting. Any resident can ask a question. How to ask a question • Start on the council website here: https://www.brighton-hove.gov. uk/council-and-democracy-draft/ your-council/go-full-council-or-committee-meeting • Find the most relevant committee for your question - if in doubt, ask it at the main council meeting. • Send your question by email to the Democratic Services officer for the committee (information will be on the agenda papers on the website) and cc: democratic. services@brighton-hove.gov.uk
2. Get involved with improving transport The council is consulting on our Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan. See the council website for more info and then respond to the survey https://consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/parking/ ltp5-and-lcwip/ Deadline: 15 November 3. Help get more bike hangars where they’re most needed The council will be putting 100 secure bike storage hangars across the city focusing on places with the highest interest and need. Take part in this survey if you’d like to see a hangar in your street: https://consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/parking/ cycle-hangar-survey/ Deadline: 14 November. 4. Take part in the Hanover and Elm Grove Liveable Neighbourhood consultation Comment on the changes you would like to see in your street or area: Hanover & Tarner Liveable Neighbourhood | Climate Conversations (engagementhq.com). Deadline: 22 November If you have other ideas please get in touch. Our next meetings on the website: https://hanover-action.org.uk/ or email us at contacthasl@gmail.com .
• You don’t have to ask the question yourself in the meeting - you can nominate someone else to do this. If you submit a question - let us know! We’d be really happy to support you. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

20 News from Labour councillors Nick Childs and Amanda Evans…
Councillor News for Queen’s Park October proved a challenging month for our city with bin strikes causing significant disruption. It was frustrating to see positive industrial relations unravel. At the time of writing, the Labour opposition had offered to assist the Council with trying to negotiate a settlement. Locally, we have been celebrating our successful campaign which has led to the Council commencing consultation on a school road closure order at Queens Park School. This will restrict traffic at drop-off and pick-up during term time making it safer for children as well as reducing pollution. Residents are encouraged to participate in the consultation at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/parking/ school-streets-queens-park/ After making representations, the council agreed to install gates at both ends of Queens Park Rise. This allows the road to be closed at pick up and drop off during term time but will allow access for the rest of the time – something many residents on the road had requested. Cllr Childs was pleased to attend St Luke’s Residents Association in September and listen to concerns about anti-social behaviour, the Pepper Pot and Community Speed Watch. We both remain very concerned about the lack of action over speeding on Freshfield Road and continue to lobby for a crossing and controls. The issue of anti-social behaviour remains challenging. We have removed misused benches from Upper Rock Gardens, have triggered police action at several properties and are lobbying for a permanent solution to address the future of Upper Rock Gardens. We had mixed feelings about the introduction of an Article 4 Directive to protect the Queens Park conservation area. We support greater protection of historic
features, but the Direction introduces a restriction of paint colours that residents may use. This makes sense in part of the area, but not in others such as Park Street, which is characterised by a range of colours. We feel some streets should not have been included in the Directive. Residents can view the protected area at: brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/planning/ heritage/queens-park-conservation-area. After June 2022 residents must obtain permission to paint their home in a colour not specified in the order. Finally, it was great to attend the Tarnerfest in September. Thank you to all those involved for putting on such a great community event.

23 News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…
It’s all about swings and roundabouts Seen from a height much of the area must resemble the site of an ancient settlement. That might get the juices of an archaeologist racing, but it isn’t doing much to fire the imagination of children, parents, grandparents or carers who have fond memories of the playground from their childhoods. The ground is scarred with the imprints where knackered play kit once stood. It has been removed by council officials, who looked, reeled in horror and declared it all unsafe and beyond repair. Before we all reach for the happy pills to banish the clouds of gloom, the sound of the galloping hooves of the cavalry can be heard in the distant foothills of Queen’s Park riding to the rescue! A revamp will soon get underway courtesy of a chunky-sounding council budget of £146,000. Deciding what pieces of equipment and where it will be sited will be driven by the community. “This is very good news,” said Caroline Burham, secretary of the Friends of Queen’s Park (FoQP) and a member of our playground project sub-committee. Last month she and fellow playground sub-committee member Jerome Hansen along with ward councillor Clare Rainey joined Steve Hyder, Brighton & Hove Cityparks’ Play Development Officer, and met members of the
local community in the first step of the broader consultation process. The FoQP playground sub-committee has agreed to work with the Council to facilitate the formal consultation, which will include some members of the local community. “We will get a chance to review the wording of the formal consultation before it gets posted onto the Council’s Consultation Portal this month,” continued Caroline. “The analysis will inform the framing of the tender document and we’re being offered a chance to review submissions too. “While the sums involved sound large,” said Caroline, “it won’t be sufficient to purchase everything that people have told us that they would like to see in the playground. To bring in more equipment we will start looking for external funding.” Work installing the new equipment is unlikely to start till early in the New Year. Diary note: The traditional Friends of Queen’s Park carols service will take place at the Royal Spa on Friday 3rd of December.

Winter Fair St Luke’s Church are delighted (after two years) to be holding a Winter/Christmas Fair on Saturday 20th November. It will take place from 10am to 2pm, with a Grand Draw, a bouncy castle and all the usual fun of the fair! Queen’s Park news…
Queen’s Park Conservation Area Brighton & Hove City Council’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture (TECC) Committee, meeting on 16th September, confirmed the Article 4 Direction for the Queen’s Park Conservation Area, following a public consultation. This will mean that certain permitted development rights are removed and a planning application will be needed to change the paint colour of the front of a building, unless the colour is on an approved list. A report to the committee
said that there had been a relatively small number of objections and most of these related to painting. The Article 4 Direction will come into force on 4 June 2022.

Kemptown person…Charles Fieldus Charles Fieldus lives in Montague Street and is a poet. How long have you lived in Kemptown? I was born in Kemptown in 1972 and have lived all around the world since then. I moved back to Kemptown in 2009 and I have been writing poetry since 1993. Tell us about your poetry…

My poetry is based on life experiences and covers a wide range of issues and information. I examine the relationship between faith and life and try to support others through the written word, spanning love, hope and faith and the proximity of Catholic beliefs, the order of prayer and the Catholic church. To help others in distress and at different points in existence is part of my aim. I write some love poems and all of my poetry is written in prose to get my message across.

I have produced some poems in book format independently with images attached, to support charities, and have had success in this field. Who are your own favourite poets? My favourite poets vary and I get a lot of inspiration from songs and hymns. St John the Baptist Catholic Church in Kemptown is where I listen to information daily and gain the topics for my poetry.

29 Lina Talbot reviews a local café…
Kemptown’s new arrival – Coffeetzar
KEMPTOWN
Coffeetzar arrived on College Road two years ago, happily unaware of the oncoming Covid waves. But since reopening in May 2020 they have managed to stay open and provide especially for the NHS staff from the Royal Sussex County Hospital, some of whom need to eat at 7.30am – so I’m sure that’s been a tough call.
The savoury meals with their Mediterranean flair are all baked in the basement kitchen: both with meat – such as sausage rolls, some made with chorizo! – and with cheese, especially feta, mozzarella and halloumi. And all combined with lots of veg and bread or pastry. And herbs! Favourites are the feta and spinach filo pastry pie and a yummy-looking feta, artichoke and mushroom pizza, but there are buns, wraps and quiche as well. The café has built up a solid rep with the locals: I can tell you it can get busy! Many work in the area, and sometimes are to be seen working on their laptops inside Coffeetzar. There are several tables indoors as well as the six parked on the pavement outside, hopefully in the sun. According to research, that’s till about 2.30pm. At weekends when brunch is provided, extra staff are needed. This can include the boss Idon himself, who though of Greek descent likes to promote a wider Mediterranean cuisine with features of Spanish, Greek and Italian cooking. The
whole design of the café with its white, sun-bleached look and laurel trees outside, and the white shop counter with decorative tile work and white walls inside, is to rekindle the feel of a café overlooking the Mediterranean, perhaps on Santorini, one of Idon’s favourite locations. Yes, there is also cake, looking colourful and sumptuous, including black forest gateau and red velvet cake. These are not Mediterranean cakes! They are layered with icing or chocolate or cream, and made with various fruit including raspberry, sour cherry, pistachio, lemon and banana – yum! So not surprising that around 3.30pm students from Brighton College begin to come down for afternoon tea. As well as, of course, for coffee, which unusually is made here from Cuban coffee beans. I intend to come that bit earlier, bag a table in the sun and try out one of Coffeetzar’s tempting offerings. Lina Talbot Reviewed on behalf of local customers

Ghost Stories for Christmas 2021
Following a break in 2020 due to ill health, director and producer Craig Johnson says: “We are delighted to be back at The Lantern performing our annual show again, which has been a staple of the Brighton Christmas season since our first production nine years ago. This year’s proceeds will be donated to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, which saved my life in 2020. I am eternally grateful for the care I received, without which I might have ended up in a literal ghost story, so it feels fantastic to give something back, particularly in light of all of the pressures felt by the NHS over the past two years.”
This year’s show, which includes strong language, promises tales of horror, melancholy and dark humour and is not suitable for children. Tickets are priced at £10 and are available from ghoststoriesforchristmas.com.
Late Night Christmas Shopping Come and join in the festive fun at Kemptown Village’s late night Christmas Shopping event on Thursday 2nd December from 4-8pm. Our amazing independent local businesses and St George’s Church are so excited to be able to open their doors again for an evening to welcome our local community and beyond to celebrate Christmas with mince pies, mulled wine and carols, and a Kemptown sprinkle of Christmas magic. The elves are dusting off their bells to jingle, and a certain special someone will be wishing everyone a Merry Christmas from his Christmas Grotto, so come and join in the festive fun.
The Maker’s Fair The Maker’s Fair is coming to St George’s Church on 13 November. It’s a community art and design fair, showcasing the work of some of Brighton’s most talented makers, with 40 exhibitors. There will be high-quality original art, prints, ceramics, jewellery and handmade wares, making it the perfect opportunity to start some Christmas shopping. Saturday 13 November, 11am-5pm, St George’s Church; free entry. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

Brighton’s original Ghost Stories for Christmas returns to The Lantern Theatre (St James’s Street) from 16th - 18th December, featuring a trio of spine-tingling tales from masters of horror Ramsey Campbell and John Paul Fitch and, this year, award-winning novelist Kate Mosse.

33 There are activities for the whole community at Dorset Gardens Methodist Church…
Dorset Gardens…a community hub There’s a hustle and bustle along St James’s Street where people from all walks of life go by. So it’s only right the neighbourhood has a space where everyone can feel at home. photo by Liz Neale
Tucked away on a side street is Dorset Gardens Methodist Church, a four-storey tardis and shared community hub for this diverse part of Brighton. People are back in the building and keen to spread the word about what’s going on.
Lynn Staff is the Dance For Parkinson’s co-ordinator. She said: “It’s an opportunity to get creative, and using the imagery and choreography that dance offers, we can enable dancers to bypass the part of the brain that no longer functions well. We love being part of a community at Dorset Gardens.” It’s not just Sunday morning hymns floating through the building – local theatre group Freckle Productions rehearse their magical shows based on books by Julia Donaldson. Right now they’re working on Zog and the Flying Doctors with its energetic musical score and intricately designed puppets. Food and friendship is an integral part of life at the Methodist church. HIV charity Lunch Positive provides grassroots support with weekly lunch clubs. Gary Pargeter explained: “Lunch Positive is led and delivered by people with HIV, and our work includes outreach to people at home, peer support and befriending, mental health support, and engagement with specialist services.”

John Cornish runs the Beaver Scout Group with children aged six to eight, constantly dreaming up new challenges. “We did milk bottle car racing this term and the Beavers raced them across the floor - everybody won a prize. We even sprayed fizzy water over the winners, Formula One style.”
Children enjoy a healthy snack at the ever-popular Tearaway Tots group
Cake and a cuppa features strongly at Dorset Gardens, with the promise of a chat thrown in too. The Clare Project meet for their transgender support and social group, offering a safe space for advice and a friendly welcome to anyone wishing to explore issues around gender identity. Children’s worker Liz Neale runs Tearaway Tots playgroup for over a hundred families and their little ones, and retired minister Cynthia Park is part of the Thursday Open House sessions. She said: “It delights me that Dorset Gardens Methodist Church has been serving the community of St James’s for over 100 years. The community has many very diverse people living within it and it is wonderful to become part of their lives and gain from their different perspectives and experiences.” Cake is sure to be guaranteed. 35 The Bronze opens as a safe space in Kemptown…
The Bronze opens with everyone welcome ethos... St James’s Street’s new cocktail bar and smokehouse offers live music, drag brunches – and a safe space for all.
It was one of the first signs that The Bronze was opening with the community in mind. Emily and David - who have enjoyed success at numerous Sussex venues – are taking steps to make it accessible for everyone: there’s an area where music levels can be controlled for those with hearing challenges, and the lighting is designed for neurodivergent people. Pride Flag colours adorn the exterior, proclaiming the venue’s everyone welcome mantra in the heart of the city’s LGBTQ+ Village. “It’s vital that we can all reconnect, feel comfortable and just be ourselves,” says Emily. David says his team is committed to paying their staff properly and treating everyone with respect. “This breeds a culture of togetherness, happiness and long-term success for both the staff and customers,” he says. Chef Harry Hiscock’s smoked food menu is winning fans with its deep flavours, responsibly sourced ingredients and inspired vegetarian and vegan options. “Our kitchen uses as much of the plants or meat as we can,” says Harry. “We’re

When The Bronze opened soon after lockdown, it put a call out to the community for its name, and a raft of suggestions poured in. “We did get a few ‘Bar-y-McBarface ideas!” says David Pearse, who co-owns The Bronze with his wife Emily and friend Harry Hiscock. “But The Bronze stuck – it seemed like a strong name for a venue with an ethos of fairness, positivity and fun.”

committed to sustainably sourced, local ingredients wherever possible.” “Christmas is going to be fantastic,” Emily continues. “Throughout the season we’ll be offering groups a feast of smoked foods, including whole smoked hogs which we use to create an array of dishes, and of course vegan and vegetarian options. The smoked foods conjure the warm aromas of a cosy Christmas, and we can’t wait to share it with our community.” In the coming months, live Jazz will be on the first Thursday of every month, drag brunches on the last Sunday of each month, and a new Blues night will be on the last Friday of every month. 37 This article is by John Rawlings of the The Natural Medicine Practice…
A healthier life after Covid-19 One of the many issues concerning people in these strange days is how to treat what has become known as Long Covid, continuing symptoms suffered by those who appeared to recover from the virus but who have not got back to what they describe as ‘normal’.
These symptoms can be varying levels of fatigue, breathlessness, muscle or joint pain, abdominal problems, anxiety, and ‘brain fog’, but how can these draining effects be alleviated? Guidelines issued by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) have instructed doctors not to keep offering painkillers to those with chronic primary pain, but to prescribe exercise and acupuncture instead. For those in recovery but not up to a stroll along the seafront or on the South Downs, a short walk around the block will get you started, daily if possible, which can be gradually increased if you are up to it. Any exercise is better than none, but be kind to yourself.
tion, the practitioner rapidly and expertly applies the needle to the correct area and then removes it immediately. CFEA practitioners are witnessing far more complete recoveries in their patients after even a few treatments. 39 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…
Madeira Terrace arches, 1930 The photographer may have chosen this spot to record the recently-completed link with the original path created by Brighton surveyor Philip Lockwood in 1890. The extension allowed people to walk from the Aquarium to the Madeira Terrace Shelter Hall (now the Concorde 2). The image allows us to appreciate how faithful the designers and builders of 192729 were to the original Victorian engineering and its beautiful perspective. It can’t be that chilly, as there’s a gentleman sitting on a bench behind the lady, reading a newspaper. The walkway has been swept; it is lit by electric light bulbs at regular intervals and the planting against the retaining wall – a late nineteenth century wall garden! – has been clipped neatly. For Victorians at leisure, walking was an important pastime. It brought health, visual pleasure, an increase of natural knowledge and the advantages of social intercourse. The Madeira Terrace arches meant that these could be obtained regardless of the weather. But it’s interesting to note that the intentions of the planners and designers in the 1890s seem to have been to provide an amenity largely for the very wealthy residents living in the mansions of Sussex Square and Chichester Terrace. These privileged individuals only had to take the ornate lift from Madeira Drive down into the Shelter Hall (which was equipped with a reading room and lavatories) and they could
then walk west under the arches or on the raised central section as far as Royal Crescent. Limiting the walkway to the distance between Royal Crescent and Sussex Square was probably a calculated decision. It ensured that the masses descending for a day or weekend trip from Brighton Station didn’t walk far enough to enjoy the arches with their betters! Anyone familiar with Brighton knows that these arches present a sorry state today. Sections have been gradually closed off since 2012 and now the whole area is inaccessible. What was – and probably still is – the longest cast iron structure in Britain is now perhaps the longest, most depressing sight on the south coast. Council plans are certainly afoot to restore the structure, with a ‘technical design’ planned this autumn. Let’s hope that work starts before we lose the original vision altogether. www.thekeep.info

41 News from the council…
Jubilee Clock Tower restoration Brighton & Hove City Council have been restoring parts of the Jubilee Clock Tower. Work began on the Grade II listed landmark at the end of September by the same team who have been working on Big Ben in London.
The next phase involved re-lettering the faded and missing letters from the clockfaces followed by the replacement of the bird prevention netting with steel mesh and, where possible, without the use of spikes. The steel mesh is being used following advice from the RSPB and helps prevent birds becoming trapped. Work was scheduled to finish around the end of October.
Brighton & Hove’s history. These works will mean that the clock will once again be working, instead of being right just twice a day.”
Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “It’s so important we take care of landmarks which are such an iconic part of
The Jubilee Clock Tower was donated to the city in 1888 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee the year before.
Consultation on cycle hangars People in Brighton & Hove are being given the chance to have their say on the installation of 100 new cycle hangars. The hangars would be used for residents to park their bikes securely near their home where they don’t currently have space. With many people living in shared accommodation where storage space is at a premium, it can be difficult for many people to safely store their bikes. The cycle hangars are approximately the size of one parking space and can store six standard sized bicycles. There will be an annual cost of £50 - £70 per year for each space.
The council are now in the early stages of planning where they should be installed and this survey is designed to assess demand for secure on-street cycle parking that will be solely reserved for residents. The cycle hangar scheme will be rolled out in stages following further consultation through a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO). The survey closes on 14 November and you can find it at: consultations.brighton-hove. gov.uk/parking/cycle-hangar-survey

43 Fiveways’ Catherine Duffy on reclaiming and retaining strength and fitness for women post-menopause…
It’s never too late! Sooner or later all women hit the menopause and, along with the psychological impacts of the reduction of female hormone production (oestrogen and progesterone), our bodies can really feel it too.
While all exercise is good for women of all ages, strength training (exercise using body weight or additional weights) in particular really comes into its own during and after menopause, as it is particularly beneficial in strengthening muscles and, through that, building denser, stronger bones. The NHS recognises the benefits and these are some: • It can help us to retain functional fitness, so carries over benefits into daily living – think of the carrying of shopping, of children, shifting furniture, decorating. Stronger arms, back and legs helps to stave off niggles and aches. • It can make us feel happy! It is well documented that exercise releases endorphins that help to make us feel good.
• Strength training can help us to regain the strength to do the things we used to do – to play like we did as girls – remember trampolines, handstands and cartwheels? (I know - pelvic floors and trampolines are not necessarily compatible!) You truly do not need to be fit, or strong, or be anyone’s idea of slim to start strength training.

47 Meet the Director of Programming at Regency Radio…
Local DJ…Ambrose Harcourt Ambrose Harcourt is DJ and Director of Programming on Regency Radio, Brighton’s new local radio station, available on DAB+, Alexa, TuneIn radio, Radio Player, Regency Radio Mobile App etc, and over the last 30 years he’s worked at many local radio stations including Southern FM and Juice FM, and on BBC One and Two and Radio 5. He is also a vice president of Chestnut Tree House and St Barnabas House hospices.
During the Lockdown, a couple of my friends, Jay Jackson and Carlos English, started Lockdown Radio, then approached me to get involved so applied to Ofcom for a licence. Because of Brighton & Hove’s history, we wanted a name that represented the city and Regency seemed to fit perfectly so it became REGENCY RADIO. Tell us about your own shows… I do the love shows with the LOVE HOUR Monday to Thursday from 9pm to midnight - and then 7 to 10am with SUNDAY SOUL/MOTOWN BREAKFAST SHOW and finally the LOVE ZONE, 9pm to midnight to include the Love Bites Top 3. How is the radio station doing so far? Fantastic feedback with non-stop music and NO ADVERTS proving popular. Radio Analytics show figures that we thought it would take us two years or more to achieve. Radio Player, that monitors over 500 radio stations in the UK, indicates we are outperforming the big radio stations at certain times. What is your role as a vice president of the two hospices? Chestnut Tree House in Poling near Arundel is the only children’s hospice in East and West Sussex and Southeast Hampshire looking after over 300 children and families with life limiting illnesses. I was a Founding Patron of the charity. We had to raise £5 million in three years to build the
house and I was very involved in fundraising and helping to raise the profile of the charity as Vice President. St Barnabas House is the adult hospice in Worthing, which has come a long way from its days in Columbia Drive to the new house in Titnore Lane. Again involved in fundraising and coming up with ideas for the house’s welfare plus people and families who use the facilities. What do you like to do to relax? As the pandemic eases, seeing family and friends helps me to chill out. I love sports so enjoy watching cricket, football, tennis, rugby, athletics and happen to be a season ticket holder for Chelsea FC and catch BHAFC every now and again. I love gardening too and we are members of the RHS and National Trust. For more information, check out www.regencyradio.co.uk

Lynn Ruth Miller memorial show
Return of Scoops improvised comedy
Originally from Ohio, Lynn relocated to Brighton at the age of 81 where she became a much loved presence on the local and professional comedy circuit. She was famed for being the world’s oldest performing comedienne and many of the world’s top comedians counted her amongst their friends. Lynn came to comedy at the age of 70 and was dubbed the new ‘Joan Rivers of Fringe Comedy’. Lynn was featured in a diverse range of shows from First Dates to America’s Got Talent and Britain’s Got Talent where she got to the last 100. Her comedy garnered many awards including the TO&ST (2014) and she was a finalist for the 2015 Old Comedian award. She won the People’s Choice award in 2009. Her comedy friends are thrilled to be able to honour her memory with a show on 7th November at The Caroline of Brunswick in Ditchling Road at 3:30pm, with proceeds going to a charity close to her heart – The Clock Tower Sanctuary in Brighton. 50 An appeal from YMCA Downslink...
Help a young person facing homelessness You can change the life of a local young person facing homelessness for just 40p a day! Can you imagine what it would have been like to navigate your teenage years without a supportive family? Or, worse, that your home wasn’t a safe place to be? There are many reasons that young people become homeless, but it is never their choice. That’s the message from YMCA DownsLink Group, the south coast’s biggest youth charity, who are launching a new, hard-hitting campaign to drive awareness of youth homelessness. The statistics around youth homelessness speak for themselves: •
It is estimated that 20% of homeless people are aged 16 to 24.
•
Approximately 40% of 16-25 year olds in the UK have sofa-surfed at some point due to having nowhere to live.
•
61% of LGBTQ+ people aged 16-25 who became homeless had first felt frightened or threatened by family.
Jack has an all too familiar story. His relationship with his family broke down after he came out as gay. He found himself homeless when he ran out of places to stay. He moved into YMCA DownsLink Group’s 24-hour supported accommodation, and, after two years is able to see a future.
Jack: “When I told my family I was gay it was probably the worst day of my life. My dad just couldn’t look at me and my mum wouldn’t stop crying. It made me feel terrible about myself – I got so depressed and low……..I was in a really bad place mentally – I think I just hated myself back then. Moving into the YMCA was the best thing to happen to me. The support workers were amazing and they just seemed to ‘get me’ and know what I needed. They encouraged me to join a local LBGTQ group and that was the start of me accepting myself for who I am. I feel so different now, I’ve mostly stopped self-harming and if I’m feeling low I know I’ve got people to talk to. I’m starting an apprenticeship soon and I feel so much more positive about the future.” By becoming a Room Sponsor, not only are you giving a vulnerable young person a home, you are giving them a second chance. Being young and homeless can create a cycle of poverty, ill-health, and exclusion that can be impossible to break. Your support will change lives. This will include ‘memory trees’ placed across the city and Martlets’ annual ‘Light up a Life’ service to remember loved ones on 12 December. This year Christmas will come early with a Martlets choir performance of ‘Songs of Joy’ on 27 November at Hove Methodist Church – please book your tickets at www.martlets.org.uk/events. To help you get ahead, Martlets is also planning a boost for online Christmas shoppers with ‘Black Friday’ and ‘Cyber Monday’ deals with 30% off from 22-29 November. This will include deals on their specialist clothes stores on DePop and Thriftify and Martlets’ eBay site, and their own store online.martlets.org.uk, with handpicked treasures old and new.
His popular print series of “subverted scenes and corrupted pleasures” sees Jem cleverly inject a punch of witty surrealism into some very famous landmarks, Brighton of course being the latest victim.
You can also stock up on Martlets Christmas cards with memorable Brighton and Hove scenes - this year they have a new card featuring Hove based drag artist Davina Sparkles that is sure to stand out on anyone’s mantlepiece!
Open daily 11am-11pm, until 13 January 2022 Hotel Pelirocco, 10 Regency Square, BN1 2FG More information at JemPanufnik.com
There will also be a selection of Christmas deals on selected sites from 1st - 19th December.

55 A great National Lottery-funded project to brighten up part of the city…
Mosaic Bench Community Project In the last days of the school summer holidays exciting community workshops were held with a view to create dazzling mosaic benches for the centre of town.
The workshops were led by local mosaic artist Caroline of Luna-Moon Mosaic and the project was a collaboration with One Brighton CIC and Evolution Arts, and was funded by the National Lottery. It brought together nearly 200 people of all ages and abilities to work on the creation of a series of colourful seats that will be permanently displayed outside Brighton Junction in Isetta Square (New England Street) for everyone to sit on and enjoy. The making took place in twice daily workshops over a week in August. While the sun streamed in at the open windows there was a frenzy of tile cutting, sticking and grouting that went on inside the foyer at Brighton Junction. The theme of the design was ‘rainbows and bubbles’ which was felt to beautifully and positively illustrate the past Covid year whilst also being suitably cheerful and Brightonesque! In the main the children worked on the “bubbles” which were created on a mesh backing with pre-cut tiles and were later added into the overall design. The adults meanwhile, after a demonstration from Caroline and her daughter Margo, took
turns in cutting and shaping the ceramic tiles and sticking them to the grey concrete benches in rippling rainbow stripes. The youngest person working on the mosaics was three and the oldest in their 70s. Food and drinks were provided by John at the Junction Café to keep the hungry volunteers refreshed. In all, five benches were completed during the week of workshops and a further two seats completed later at Stanmer Craft Museum. It was a challenging project but everyone who took part thoroughly enjoyed themselves and they chatted happily as they worked. It brought the community together after such a difficult year! The benches will be out for use in Isetta Square, Brighton BN1 4GQ, this winter. 57 News on a council consultation…
Share your views on travel and transport People across Brighton & Hove are being given the chance to share their views on the future of travel and transport in the city.
Earlier in the summer, the council published a document which will form the basis of the Local Transport Plan 5 (LTP5). They have also now published a similar document, their first Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP), which sets out strategic plans for improving the walking and cycling environment in the city. The council now want your views on both documents to help shape their plans. LTP5 will set out the council’s outcomes and priorities for transport and travel to 2030. It will support the council’s move towards becoming carbon neutral by 2030, along with other plans and strategies. The council wants to reduce the need for people to travel and change how they travel.
Ideas in the plan include: •
A network of mobility hubs to provide seamless interchange between different forms of travel.
•
A Liveable City Centre to create an attractive central area by placing restrictions on vehicle access, with exemptions for disabled people and others, such as emergency services, local residents, local businesses, taxis and buses.
•
Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, where motor traffic is greatly reduced in a group of residential streets to create more liveable places. Traffic is reduced by installing “filters”, such as bollards and planters. An expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone.
The six priority areas of the plan are: •
Create an inclusive and integrated transport system
•
Develop streets and places that encourage and enable active travel
•
Increase public transport use
•
Reduce car use
•
•
Promote and facilitate the use of low and zero emission vehicles
•
Promote and use technology to reduce and manage travel.
You can find the consultation at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ parking/ltp5-and-lcwip and the closing date for comments is Monday 15 November.

61 News from the council…
Free HIV and sexual health test vending machines New sexual health and HIV vending machines have been launched in five venues in Brighton & Hove.
The HIV self-tests are 99.7% accurate. By using a single drop of blood they give a result in just 15 minutes. The kits are for people WITHOUT SYMPTOMS who want to check their sexual health or HIV status. The venues for the new vending machines are: •
The Jubilee Library, which is run by the council
•
Portland Road, Hove, between Wish Park Surgery and Kamsons Pharmacy
•
the Wellsbourne Centre, Whitehawk
•
the Brighton Sauna, and
•
the Black & Minority Ethnic Community Project Centre on Fleet Street.
The initiative is being run jointly by the Martin Fisher Foundation and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty has welcomed the new service. He said: “Brighton & Hove is a HIV Fast Track City – which means we’re working together to end all new cases of HIV by 2030. For this to happen, everyone at risk of HIV needs to take an HIV test and be aware of their HIV status. Having free testing kits more readily available will help us achieve this goal. We have some of the best HIV support, treatment, and prevention services and community organisations in the country. And I’m delighted that the Jubilee Library is one of the venues for this vital new service.”

63 News from the council…
Next stage for School Streets Members of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting on 21 September, approved a report on delivering School Streets to all eligible infant, junior and primary schools, with the first six to be implemented in the next year. The approach to School Streets, as set out in the report, has been informed by the closures that were introduced in September 2020 to support the safe reopening of schools as part of the council’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic.
•
Queen’s Park Primary School
•
Westdene Primary School
•
St Mary’s Catholic Primary
•

•

•
Hove Junior (Portland Road site)
Schools have been chosen based on criteria including their location, complaints about illegal parking and road safety and involvement in other active travel schemes and activities. What are School Streets? School Streets support the safe movement of children to and from school by creating streets that allow for more walking, cycling or scooting. They reduce congestion around the school gates, improve air quality and encourage active and sustainable travel around the school. They also help remove the issue of double parking and cars idling outside schools. A number of School Streets schemes were introduced in the city in September 2020 in response to the need for additional space during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The report recommended the delivery of School Streets at six schools per year. The priority schools for a closure in 21/22 will be:
Changes to current schemes The committee also agreed changes made to current School Street schemes outside St Luke’s, Brunswick Primary School and St Nicolas CE Primary School. Having listened to comments from residents and key stakeholders, the report recommended removing the permanent road closures and reverting back to a model where closures are only in operation during drop-off and pick-up times. Timed restrictions will remain in place at Downs Infant School and Downs Junior School pending a review of additional measures to support closures at these sites as part of the programme moving forward.

65 Brighton Dome have announced their Christmas programme…
Celebrate Christmas at Brighton Dome There really is something for everyone at Brighton Dome this December with a full festive season of live events. From South American circus to enchanting ballet, classic carols to new arrangements of favourite songs and a rebellion against Christmas convention in an online musical film.
Returning to Brighton with their sell-out Christmas show, Ballet Theatre UK’s The Snow Queen is an enchanting re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen’s festive fairytale - the story that inspired Disney’s Frozen. A perfect outing for the whole family, this talented young company of international dancers will perform the magic of ballet to a glorious score. To celebrate the end of the year in style, Brighton Philharmonic Orchestra’s New Year’s Eve Viennese Gala promises an afternoon of classical music featuring favourites from the Strauss family and the wonderful world of Viennese operetta. Christmas wouldn’t be the same without a rousing sing along and this year will be a special return for local choirs to the stage. Brighton Gay Men’s Chorus bring an evening of fun and frivolity featuring favourite festive tunes and sparkling new arrangements. The Choir with No Name join their London and Brighton choirs for a night of Christmas classics, with donations and profits from the event supporting the charity’s work with the homeless, in partnership
The Snow Queen
with Brighton Housing Trust. And Brighton Festival Chorus host their joyful celebration of classical Christmas music, accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Brighton Festival Youth Choir. Premiering online on Thursday 16 December, An_Other Christmas: Recorded Delivery is a rebellion against tradition for those less enamoured with the festive season. This free alternative Christmas film is a celebration of otherness, the others and the other in everyone, featuring music from artists Douglas Dare, Camille O’Sullivan, Eska and Duke Garwood. Tickets for all Christmas events will be available from Brighton Dome’s website and ticket office. Brighton Dome, Church Street, Brighton BN1 1UE brightondome.org Ticket Office: 01273 709709 Open for in-person bookings Monday-Saturday 10.00 am-5.00 pm

67 A big show coming to Brighton’s Theatre Royal this Christmas…
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, the award-winning feel-good musical sensation, will visit Brighton this Christmas from Tuesday 7 December 2021 – Sunday 2 January 2022. Jamie New is sixteen and lives on a council estate in Sheffield. Jamie doesn’t quite fit in. Jamie is terrified about the future. Jamie is going to be a sensation. Supported by his brilliant loving mum and surrounded by his friends, Jamie overcomes prejudice, beats the bullies and steps out of the darkness, into the spotlight.
With an original score of catchy pop tunes by lead singer-songwriter of The Feeling, Dan Gillespie Sells and writer Tom MacRae (Doctor Who), this musical will have everybody talking about Jamie for years to come. West End star Layton Williams, one of the most exciting talents in UK theatre, reprises the role of Jamie New. Roy Haylock, also known as his drag alter ego Bianca Del Rio, winner of RuPaul’s Drag Race, will also return to play Hugo/Loco Chanelle, and Shobna Gulati (Coronation Street, Dinnerladies) who has starred in the West End, UK Tour and movie adaptation of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, re-joins the cast to play Ray. This fun and fabulous show heads to Theatre Royal Brighton for a four-week run and is the perfect fit for Brighton during the festive period. It’s time to dust off your glad rags, put on your heels and

enjoy a night out at the theatre! Bianca Del Rio said: When I was asked to spend Christmas on tour with “Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” in a seaside resort city, I immediately said “Yes!! Sign me up!!” while visions of tanning on sunny beaches were in my head. Then I was told the city would be Brighton. Well...the sunny visions quickly went away, but I’m still thrilled because no city does Christmas like Brighton. Get the mulled wine ready because I’ll be on my way soon!!” Tickets at atgtickets.com/brighton

Green flags for three Brighton parks
Within this eclectic collection, Nick has singled out a series of stunning French and American safety promotion posters, dating from the 1930s to the 1950s, which form the bulk of the exhibition entitled ‘Accidents do happen..’ In addition to this, you will discover historically interesting and decorative original mounted prints, with connections to Brighton, England and Spain from the 1860s through to the early 2000s. With original maps and prints from just £5, this is an affordable and unusual exhibition that is not to be missed! To get a preview of the work on show, visit: http://www.instagram.com/ intheframebrighton ‘Accidents do happen..’ runs from Tuesday 16 November to Sunday 22 November at Gallery40, Gloucester Road, Brighton BN1 4AQ (5 mins from Brighton Station). 11am - 6.30pm (Sunday 11am - 4pm)
A record-breaking 2,127 parks and green spaces have collected a coveted Green Flag Award for 2021, as the scheme celebrates 25 years as the international quality mark for parks.
GENERAL
North Laine resident Nick has been collecting vintage posters and ephemera for over ten years, having an eye for creative graphic design, well-executed engravings, antique maps and much more.
Preston Park, The Level and Kipling Gardens in Rottingdean have again collected Green Flag Awards, as well as four parks in Hove and Portslade. Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said: “I would like to congratulate everyone involved in the 2127 parks and green spaces on their achievement. To meet the requirements demanded by the scheme is testament to the hard work of the staff and volunteers who do so much to ensure that their site has high standards of horticulture, safety and environmental management and is a place that supports people to live healthy lives.”
