News from Clare Rainey, Green councillor for Queen’s Park ward…

QUEENS PARK

We have now been in some form of lockdown for over four months (at the time of writing) and it has been a time of reflection and change. Some people have enjoyed a slower pace of life.

It is still an extremely busy time at the council with swift changes being made in response to emerging patterns of how and where the virus is spreading, and to ever-changing Government guidelines. Some of these changes have had a positive impact on the environment such as improvements to pedestrian and cycle routes, and fewer cars on the road. We have all enjoyed improvements in air quality and increased evidence of nature and wildlife. In my ward the closure of Madeira Drive to vehicles has meant that residents have had a new open space to use for exercise and recreation, which has been invaluable in an area with few green spaces and where many people live in flats or houses with little or no outside space. This has also made it easier to visualise how Madeira Drive could look and function once the restoration of Madeira Terrace is complete. The area east of the seafront has the potential to become a newly revitalised part of the city, with its own unique character, attracting residents and visitors alike and providing a great venue for some of Brighton and Hove’s many fantastic events, as well as inspiring more.

For others it’s been a time of increased pressure due to having to juggle commitments such as working from home; looking after people who are shielding or self-isolating; home schooling; and volunteering for one or more of the many organisations supporting local communities through the crisis. My thoughts are with those who have gone through the trauma of contracting COVID-19, or caring for somebody else who has.

Many businesses have struggled during lockdown. Some of the sectors the city relies on most economically, such as tourism, hospitality, the creative industries, and arts and culture have suffered the biggest financial losses. All councillors are committed to helping struggling businesses and sole-traders, many of whom have found new and innovative ways of working. I have been greatly encouraged by the responses to the crisis in my own area of work in the creative sector, and have seen a significant increase in collaboration and collective working. Despite its hardships and loss the COVID crisis has opened our eyes to different ways of doing things, and, like crises tend to do, has led us to re-evaluate what is most important and what we want our priorities to be moving forward. 7 Meet the Chair of Badgers Tennis Club…

Liz Foster lives in Queen’s Park Road. She’s a retired teacher and is currently chair of Badgers Tennis Club in Church Place, one of the oldest tennis clubs in the country. How long have you lived in Queen’s Park? I moved in 1982. Once I discovered the area, I never wanted to live anywhere else in Brighton.

By chance! I joined when my eldest son was about 11 and desperate to learn how to play. Badgers had just re-opened and was offering junior coaching. It was a magical space - a real secret garden - and the coaching was fantastic. When the club was suddenly sold in 2013 and we found out there were plans to bulldoze it for housing, the members were determined to try and save it. That’s when I found myself being elected as Chair. It has been a steep learning curve but I have been in with the adults...and usually beating us! amazed by the devotion the club inspires It is not just a cliché to describe us as a and the time people are willing to give. family...that is the culture we have worked hard to create. When was Badgers founded? We think we can date it to 1895. We have some of the minutes of committee meetings from the First World War when wounded officers were welcomed with tea and cake....and we still take tea and cake seriously! What ability levels does Badgers cater for? All abilities! Our coach, Jon Miller, runs courses for adults from beginners to performance level...and our junior courses are very popular. We are determined that tennis should be seen as available to anyone who is keen to play. One of the things I love most is that, over the 20 years I have been a member, I have seen juniors learning to play and then joining

How has Badgers been affected by the new social distancing guidelines? We are lucky in that our site has plenty of space. Once we were allowed to play doubles and resume social tennis, life became easier. It has affected the use of our lovely clubhouse, in which we have hosted some memorable events from christenings to weddings. But we are currently looking at setting up a joint venture with Mint Fitness in Kemptown and yoga classes are about to re-start. Live Theatre Returns to Queens Park It seems hard to imagine now, but there was a time when Queens Park, especially in the summer, was host to numerous events that drew in people from the local community and beyond.

The Picnic in the Park, the Bark in the Park, the regular Shakespeare performances at the Royal Spa Nursery, and of course Festival installations like the luminous dangling moon. Thankfully, some intrepid musicians have started to entertain people in an impromptu fashion in the park, alongside the usual hula-hoopers and jugglers. It’s been a tough time for workers in the creative industries, but at least now audiences and performers can get out and enjoy the buzz of live outdoor performance.

Mad Dogs Theatre Company was set up by local actors Fiona Bruce and Owen Aaronovitch, and has been devising performances for children and adults for over 20 years. As active members of the Friends of Queens Park, the two actors also spent five years organising Shakespeare in the Park at the Royal Spa Nursery, so have a special affinity with the setting; with its gentle grassy slopes and colonnades, the Royal Spa is a special place for both audiences and performers. With this in mind, Brighton-based Mad Dogs Theatre Company will be presenting Frogs and Mogs and Doggy Tales at the Royal Spa Nursery on Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th of September. Performances will be at 2pm and 4pm each day, and tickets are only £5 for both adults and children, bookable online via the Eventbrite website. The show is aimed at children over five and their families/carers, and is a fast-paced, inventive and humorous retelling of three folk tales, with plenty of live music and lots of silly hats. It’s an outdoor show, so people will need to bring rugs to sit on, and to dress for the weather. Appropriate Covid-19 measures will be followed, so audiences will sit in family groups, and adults will need to wear face coverings at the point of entry. News from the Friends of Queen’s Park…

Something fishy going on here... Last month I focussed on the swan population living in the Queen’s Park pond and, in passing, mentioned that beneath the surface lurked all manner of fish life, writes Geoffrey Bowden from the Friends of Queen’s Park.

My photograph shows Friends of Queen’s Park committee member and local ecologist Chris Lowe ably supported by 10-year-old Joel Eaves-Butterworth, conducting an audit of the fish population to determine exactly what is swimming beneath the surface. Joel, on holiday from Kendal in Cumbria, is, according to his mum, a budding ecologist so was in his element. Happily the audit has revealed that the good reputation of the Koi carp remains intact. The species shown in Joel’s net turns out to be a feral goldfish. The in-breeding of the humble goldfish has created the two-tone effect. That colour combo deceived casual observers to jump to the hasty conclusion that the pond was playing host to one or more of the 100 or so species of Koi carp. Sigh of relief all round, but we still urge folk to stop tipping the contents of their fish tanks into the pond. It is illegal!

The magnet effect of Queen’s Park Queen’s Park residents never fail to sing praises of their park. But its attractions reach beyond the immediate neighbourhood. My photograph shows Julie Parker, left, from Portslade and her pal Jill Taylor from Woodingdean, who told me that they hadn’t visited the park for some time, but thought it was time to check it out again, as they had heard such glowing reports. “Those reviews weren’t exaggerated,” exclaimed Jill, “and spending an afternoon by the pond having a good chinwag and watching the wildlife makes life worthwhile.” Have a local editorial item? Sadly, many, if not all the pond’s fishes have arrived as a result of folk who are no longer able or interested in looking after their aquatic charges. Possible sightings of hundreds of Koi carp, which can be bad news for the oxygen content and general ecological balance of the pond, have been reported.

Madeira Drive At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, the council temporarily closed Madeira Drive to motor vehicles to provide a safe space for residents to walk and cycle and they say they have received a lot of positive feedback from those who’ve used the space over the last few months. At a full council meeting on 13th August, two petitions – one to reopen Madeira Drive for all users and another to keep it closed to traffic – were discussed. Fiveways Face…Suzy Bolt Suzy Bolt lives on Ditchling Road in Fiveways. As a yoga teacher and leadership team coach, she has had to reinvent her business since lockdown and is now running a virtual wellbeing platform, 360mindbodysoul. What was your life like before lockdown?

FIVEWAYS

I travelled a lot with coaching/training work and taught yoga in my home yoga studio. All my work was people-facing so Covid has completely changed my life. Tell us more about 360mindbodysoul… As we headed towards lockdown, I started to realise that it was going to be a huge challenge to us all, on many levels. I also knew that I wasn’t going to be the only one who was losing everything workwise, so after taking all my yoga classes online from March 16th, I invited my own personal trainer, Ross Cooper, to run classes with me too. From there it grew, offering Mindfulness and Pilates. The super affordable timetable and its structure has helped a lot of people get through the last five months. Now we all love it and people want it to continue, so it’s become an established business with long-term plans. It’s really exciting. What sort of people have signed up? All ages. Multigenerational. We have young people aged 15 working out in the house alongside their parents who have been introduced by their grandparents. I think our oldest member is 75! We love that it feels like a big family group with friends/family joining each other in class. Everyone is welcome and we pride ourselves on that. We really have fun, it’s live and we get to know people.

Parks update... Preston Park and Blakers Park Frogs and newts in the Rotunda pond: One of my favourite things about being a ward councillor is the chance to meet people who are real experts in a given field and put them in touch with their opposite number within the council. This morning I joined a local herpetologist (that’s an expert on reptiles and amphibians to you and me) and a CityParks officer to discuss the Rotunda pond in Preston Park. As many residents will be aware, the conditions this year have led to a lot of algae in the pond. A CityParks employee currently clears this daily and the pond will be cleaned out in October/November. In future, we can consider putting in other pond plants to discourage the algae. We will also look at protecting a section of the pond from any unwanted incursions into the pond that are likely to stir up the bottom of the pond as these can cause the frogs and newts to die. Modern flea and worm treatments mean dogs are a particular threat. Play area in Blakers Park: Residents have been disappointed by the ongoing delay in reopening the play area in Blakers Park and the increase in anti-social behaviour from groups of young people congregating there in the evenings. Please report such behaviour to the police via the 101 number. This allows the police to build a picture of how regularly it happens and how much damage it causes. Ward councillors have also raised this with the newly appointed PCSO.

The play area remains closed because repairs are needed to the play equipment. Unfortunately, Blakers was one of the worst parks for defects, while the council currently only has a tiny maintenance team to cover all of the city’s parks and play areas. The good news, however, is that we expect the repairs to be done imminently and an officer responsible for overseeing play areas throughout the city has recently been appointed and is due to start on 1 September, in a post that has been empty for almost a year.

Parking in Preston Park: Residents regularly contact me about traffic in Preston Park outside the designated parking areas. Following the painting of the new road markings at the top of Lime Tree Walk, additional bollards and signage are due to be installed to make it clear that, for the safety of all park users, access to the Walk is for disabled drivers and pedestrians. Hollingdean Terrace development gets go-ahead A potential new development at 19 Hollingdean Terrace was given permission by the council’s Planning Committee on 5th August.

Coachwerks currently includes a wholefoods shop and provides affordable workspace for a number of creative industries. The proposal would result in the loss of almost all of the current commercial floor space and the uptake of the new proposed commercial floor space by some of the existing occupants of Coachwerks cannot be guaranteed. 81 objections were received to the proposals, many of which were concerned about the loss of the community facilities at Coachwerks. One local resident wrote: “This is such a valuable community space. The zero waste shop, run by local volunteers, lets families and older people buy as small amount of food as they like, also organic fresh veg.” The planning officer’s report recommended the scheme for approval, concluding that it would make a welcome contribution to the council’s housing targets and the city’s supply of commercial floorspace, which would be of a much improved standard. Hollingdean & Stanmer ward councillor Martin Osborne told the planning committee that he and Cllr Theresa Fowler objected to the application. He was concerned about the loss of employment floor space and said that Coachwerks was a commu-

Gareth Giles, agent for the applicant, said that the existing Coachwerks building was in a very poor state of repair and it wasn’t possible to simply upgrade what was there. Cllr Carol Theobald, a member of the Planning Committee, commented that the current building looked scruffy. The new development would improve the area but there was too much housing compared to studios and she would have liked some parking there. Although the application has been granted, according to the current managers, Rachel Entwistle and John Anderson, this does not mean the end of Coachwerks. They are currently working with others towards securing its future. While they agree that the site is somewhat dilapidated, they believe this should be remedied via investment, rather than demolition, and they look forward to Coachwerks continuing to provide a source of affordable studio space and local, healthy food for the community.

Hanover Councillor News I’ve been appointed deputy chair of the Children Young People and Skills Committee, and my main areas of responsibility are special educational needs, young people’s mental health and inclusion. I’m also now chair of both the Corporate Parenting Board and the Modernisation Oversight Group. I’m looking forward to these new responsibilities and to working collaboratively with colleagues from all parties to achieve the best outcomes we can for the young people in our city. These are exciting yet difficult times and there are many challenges ahead. What’s important is that that we move forward from Covid in a way that is fair to all residents. People with respiratory conditions are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill with Covid and poor air quality exacerbates this. So clean air is an absolute priority for us. We also want residents to be as healthy as possible as this too helps fight the disease. I’m co-ordinating the Hanover Liveable Neighbourhood (HLN) project, which aims to improve our air quality along with our physical and mental health. The council agreed to a request by local community group Hanover Action for a pilot ‘low traffic neighbourhood’, which will stop vehicles from outside the area cutting through our narrow streets. The cleaner air and quieter roads will allow kids to play and the rest of us to socialise more easily outdoors, while maintaining social distancing. The case for covered cycle storage During the lockdown, bike shops were selling out and people were using bikes even more! Electric bikes are taking off and are ideal for tackling our hilly terrain. The new Climate Assembly set up by the Council, where 50 randomly selected local people help shape how we combat the climate crisis, will consider transport as its first topic as it is one of the city’s biggest carbon emitters: https://new. brighton-hove.gov.uk/climate-change/ brighton-hove-climate-assembly The terraced housing in Hanover and much of Brighton does not allow easy access to back gardens to store cycles; in family housing and multi-occupied property, storing bikes securely indoors is difficult without taking up valuable living space. People do not feel happy leaving expensive bikes locked to hoops outside, vulnerable to weather and theft. There is therefore a need for secure, weatherproof external cycle storage. A couple of years ago Hanover Action carried out an online survey via their website which asked residents whether they would like covered cycle storage in their street and whether they would be prepared to pay for it. This had 73 respondents across Hanover and 85% of those who replied supported the idea of covered storage. Local councillors are

A Bikehangar cycle store constantly being approached by residents asking whether storage is planned and how they can access it. A great model is the ‘Bikehangar’ store produced by cycle storage company Cyclehoop https://www.cyclehoop. com/. This is widely used in London and other major cities. A pilot unit in Shaftesbury Road has been successfully tested in Brighton. The Bikehangar takes up the space and width of less than a car parking space and can store six bikes. Users pay to rent a space. The Council have been great in supporting the very successful Brighton BikeShare and in the provision of cycle lanes and one-way contraflows. We now need to make a strong case for the provision of covered cycle storage to help support the shift to cycling. North Laine artist…Robbie Allen Robbie Allen is an artist and illustrator. He’s spent 10 years living/travelling abroad but is now back in the North Laine area of Brighton. What was your favourite country that you spent time in and why?

Tell us about your art… I’m quite versatile really. I sketch (pencil and ink), I paint traditionally (watercolour and oil) and I paint digitally (concept and fantasy art). I also do murals! One day you might see me with my sketchbook or easel out in public, and the next day I’ll be indoors working on my Wacom tablet! I love to capture the uniqueness of a person’s character, the splendour of beautiful landscapes and the almost human qualities of animals. I’m also passionate about myths, legends and storytelling in fantasy art/illustration. How has travel influenced you and your art? It has shown me life through different lenses and made me more aware of the relationships between people and their environment. It has drawn my attention to the similarities and differences between us all. It has also helped me reflect on the wonders of the universe and deepen my philosophical thinking. In terms of my art, travel has increased my awareness of light, colour, shape, form, perspective and composition. Now when I paint, I can recall in detail all the amazing places I’ve visited and use my experienc-

es to enrich my current work. Travel has also taught me to appreciate the truth and reality of what I observe thus helping me to produce honest and faithful representations of my subjects, whilst being fully present in the moment. It’s great when local people come and talk to me or watch what I’m doing. I’m always happy to chat and receive commissions from anyone for portraits, landscapes, townscapes or special occasions. I intend to paint some autumn and winter scenes of Brighton and the local area very soon, and I’m also planning to write and illustrate my own visual storybook, based on the legend of Atlantis. Sleep Easy to tackle Our Plastic youth homelessness Ocean Family breakdown is a leading cause of youth homelessness, and pressure created by Covid-19 has drastically increased the number of vulnerable young people presenting as homeless in Sussex and Surrey.

Brighton Museum has opened “Our Plastic Ocean”, the first online show addressing the global crisis of marine plastic pollution.

Since March, YMCA DownsLink Group, who provide supported accommodation and housing advice to young people across the region, have seen a 61% increase in presentations of homelessness compared to last year. To compound the problem, the charity had to cancel its biggest annual fundraising event, Sleep Easy, in March. So, they have re-invented Sleep Easy to encourage people to sign up on Friday 9th October 2020 and raise money by sleeping ‘anywhere but your bed’. Just grab a sleeping bag and sleep anywhere you like - your garden, hallway, lounge or any other safe space. Children and young people are positively encouraged to take part and will be provided with special activity packs. There will also be virtual entertainment on offer throughout the evening. If current trends continue, our oceans could contain more plastic than fish by 2050. Back to School Circus Street School was one of a small number of elementary schools established in Brighton before the 1870 Education Act, and it came under the control of the new School Board soon after its formation in December 1870.

Entries for subsequent weeks show that, rather than being seen as a welcome escape from the factory floor, daily attendance at school was resisted by many pupils and truancy was clearly a problem. Some parents were also unconvinced of the benefits of schooling: a chimney sweep collecting his son from school questioned the use of education, saying ‘it wouldn’t help him sweep the chimneys.’ The Keep holds many resources that reflect life for the working classes in Brighton from the mid to late 19th century. Census returns for the area around Circus Street, for example, show how densely populated it was, while health reports suggest what it must have been like to live in such overcrowded conditions. But anyone who needs reminding of the gap between rich and poor in Victorian England should add school log books from this period to their reading list. One entry here notes that ‘several [boys] away for want of boots’; another refers to a boy ‘who has been out on the beach for about a week sleeping in bathing machines’, while another abruptly states ‘one boy who attended very badly got hurt and died on Monday.’

The earliest log book for the school in The Keep’s archives dates back to February 1873, and it paints a bleak picture: ‘Commenced school with 14 boys. Weather very cold and snowing. Find the children very backward and rude... Not one would be able to pass the 1st Stand[ard] in arithmetic. The desks are old and very unsteady and the books in stock are too difficult for the children.’

Thankfully, things began to improve slowly for both pupils and their teachers at Circus Street. The summary of the 1884 Inspector’s Report states that: ‘As headmaster, Mr Gibbins has I believe worked assiduously and under his supervision in most subjects a decided advance has been made. Writing and Arithmetic very good, Reading and Repetition not strong in the Upper part of the school; class subjects Geography and English on the whole good, as also Music by note. Mental Arithmetic very satisfactory.’ The following year, the school moved to a new building designed by borough architect Thomas Simpson, and remained there until it closed in 1926. www.thekeep.info

School Streets From September, 14 schools will be taking part in the city’s School Streets project, approved in June by the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability committee.

Some schools aren’t able to take part for technical reasons while some have chosen not to take part. We hope people will support the Headteachers’ decisions made with the health and safety of families, staff and neighbours in mind.

Barriers will be placed at either end of the restriction and will be manned by trained volunteers. A Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) may be issued to vehicles parked in contravention of road traffic regulations. The level of the penalty will vary according to the type of contravention. By opening up their spare room, individuals can sleep well, have a hot meal, access crucial amenities including somewhere private to wash and above all experience kindness in an otherwise bleak situation. The majority of Nightstop guests have either suffered a family or relationship breakdown or breakdown of their tenancy often brought about by a number of combining pressures such as a strain on finances due to income loss or austerity measures, the challenge of living with poor mental health and a local private rental market increasingly beyond affordability. Regardless of reason, Nightstop guests are individuals – both interesting and interested in life, often working or studying, who have aspirations and plans and who just need a secure place from which to navigate this phase in their life. What difference has Covid-19 made? Covid-19 has brought even more anxiety for those facing or experiencing homelessness. Many families and individuals have faced challenging lockdown circumstances and the end of the furlough scheme and the prospect of a recession on the horizon will only precipitate the issues that place people at risk of homelessness.

43 Advice from the council…

Brighton & Hove City Council has urged residents and visitors to keep themselves safe if they go in the sea and not to use inflatables, following two fatal incidents in the first two weeks of August. Brighton & Hove’s coastline can be extremely dangerous, with winds coming in from multiple directions causing dangerous wave conditions on the shoreline. The RNLI guidance is that inflatables, blow-up toys and airbeds are designed for pools, and shouldn’t be used in the sea, as they can easily be swept out. The lifeguard service is operating at a reduced level due to Covid-19 restrictions. This means that not all bathing areas can be covered by lifeguards. Instead, a specific zone is being lifeguarded in each of the Brighton, Hove and Rottingdean beaches. It is more important than ever that everyone plays their part in preventing further tragedies this summer by following sea safety guidance: • • • • • • • •

learn what the beach flags mean, and take them seriously keep close to the shore remember sea swimming is different from being in a pool make sure children are closely supervised teach yourself and children to float in the water always wear a proper life vest if using a kayak or SUP ensure the kayak or SUP is attached to you by a leash overloading a kayak or SUP with people will make it unsteady and unsafe • if you get into trouble and have your mobile phone, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard • follow the lifeguard’s advice.

The Warren Outdoors Brighton production company Otherplace had to cancel its Brighton Fringe pop-up, The Warren, in Victoria Gardens in May due to the Covid-19 lockdown. The company is currently recreating The Warren in a new outdoor site, on the beach next to Brighton Palace Pier, with a daily programme of live comedy, theatre, cabaret and family shows. Highlights for September include: The Carole King and James Taylor Story and Jamie Kenna starring as Max Miller in The Cheeky Chappie. The Warren Outdoor Season runs until 27th September 2020. 48 The open-air theatre season draws to a close…

Brighton Open Air Theatre There are some great shows lined up for the last month of the condensed season at the Brighton Open Air Theatre (BOAT) in Dyke Road Park. Comedy this month includes stand-up from performers such as Tim Vine, Shappi Khorsandi and Marcus Brigstocke; and Trumpton Comes Alive (5th September) features classic songs from 1960s children’s TV programmes, Camberwick Green, Trumpton and Chigley. The Magic Flute by Opera Anywhere on Sunday 13th September is a show for the whole family to enjoy, featuring original puppetry.

From West End to Broadway on 24th September features West End star Alison Carter singing hit songs from some of the greatest Broadway and West End musicals; and on 25th September, Blighty, Broadway and Beyond tells the story of Noel Coward and Gertrude Lawrence.

On Saturday 19th September, Seriously Collins and Real Magic combines the UK’s leading tributes to Phil Collins and Queen, and Brighton’s very own Eagles tribute band – The Alter Eagles – return to BOAT for the third year running on Sunday 20th.

Finally there’s the traditional End of Summer Party with the Brighton Beach Boys performing the glorious harmonies of songs such as God Only Knows and Sloop John B (Sun 27th Sept).

There’s also plenty of Shakespeare this month, including Twelfth Night, The Improvised Shakespeare Show and Much Ado about Falstaff.

Lexical Lockdown

Richard B Gough has just published his debut novel, The Black Lion, book one in a series called “Spirits of the Past”.

Lexical Lockdown is a book of poems by 29-year-old Melanie Haagman from Brighton.

When successful solicitor Matt spots a medieval cottage up for sale, he gives up his career to rent it out as a holiday let. Set in the heart of the old town of Brighton, the step proves to be fruitful as the bookings come rolling in. But the cottage has a dark secret: its guests are haunted by ghosts from the past. When one guest hands Matt a medieval hat found in the ‘Underworld’, it occurs to him that past and present are intertwined. Every sign seems to lead to Deryk Carver, the owner of the Black Lion pub who met a terrifying end in the sixteenth century. Desperate to find the truth, Matt embarks on a journey on All Hallows’ Eve.

She says: “During lockdown I was temporarily out of work and have always used poetry as a way of making sense of uncertain times and difficult situations. I began writing poems about the pandemic and posting them online. They received a lot of positive feedback so I decided to write a poem a day during lockdown. Each poem is entitled with the date and outlines breaking news and anything significant that occurred during that day of the lockdown. I feel it captures the circumstances we all faced together in a raw, honest and at times comical way.

Richard B Gough has previously self-published a gay and lesbian wedding planner guide, a couple of short stories about his dog and a gluten-free cookbook.
