Hove Park Councillor News Vaccination Programme: Over 70,000 people in Brighton & Hove had received their first dose of vaccine by 4th March. More people are being invited to book a vaccination appointment as the NHS programme works through the priority groups so if you have not been invited, look out for a letter with your name on it. Hove Park Bin Provision: Hove Park is now on a short list of about four parks where Cityclean are looking at the bin provision. Joe Lewis from the council is in charge of this programme and both myself and Cllr Brown will keep you updated on progress. This follows on from Conservative council budget wins to secure funding for sports infrastructure such as tennis court nets and basketball hoops and replacement bins in open spaces including Hove Park and the Hove Recreation Ground.

Climate Q&A: I took part in the Q&A on 19 March with Cllrs Mac Cafferty and Platts. This was organised by a group of people who live and work in Brighton, Hove and Portslade. Please keep the questions coming! Hove Park Miniature Railway: The railway could re-open to the public this summer from July to October. This will only happen if permitted under the Government guidelines at the time. Please celebrate with the railway and the wonderful team that keeps it going in what is the 70th anniversary year. Summer Events In The City: It became apparent at the council’s Licensing Committee on 4 March that the council had not made a decision on summer festivals and events even though news appeared in the press on Festival and Pride. Licensing officers noted in response to a question from me that it was premature to announce events given the dynamic pandemic situation. Events on council land are subject to a go-ahead from the Chief Executive. The Director of Public Health can prohibit events if they pose a risk to public health. Cycle Lane Impact: A group of residents living on the Old Shoreham Road have noted that bins were being moved by the council away from the OSR because they cannot be emptied safely. A child had been injured so let’s all work with officers and the council to highlight any safety concerns that we have. Please get in touch if you have a new or ongoing concern. Trusler’s Mill This was formerly known as West Mill and then Streeter’s Mill. Originally standing in Belle Vue Fields, now Regency Square, the mill was moved from there in 1797 by 36 yoke of oxen to the top of Millers Road, a little to the north-east of the present Dyke Alehouse in Dyke Road. In 1866 James Trusler was its owner. This photo was taken in 1870 and the mill was pulled down in 1885.

News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse…
A Suspicious Device February is usually a quiet time of year for Three Cornered Copse. The mud and the cold weather tend to keep activity levels at a minimum, so it was exciting to learn that the bomb squad, accompanied by the police, had cornered off a part of the woodland because of a discovery of “a suspicious device”. Reports indicated that the device was a suspected grenade, which was duly detonated with a controlled explosion. Locals reported hearing the loud noise echoing up and down the woods. As to the veracity of the grenade, (was it a toy or replica?), and to why it would be in the copse, it remains a mystery. As far as we know the copse has never been used for any military manoeuvres. After a few hours of yellow vest activity, the peace was returned to our parkland, and the police and bomb squad cleared up and departed. Activity for the Friends group is still limited to individual projects of course, until the lockdown is lifted. Some three years ago the Friends began a planting schedule of native trees and shrubs, donated by the “I Dig Trees” programme. The saplings were protected by a plastic collar supported by the cane. The plastic was starting to break down, become brittle, so it was time to remove these from the environment. The saplings were Blackthorn, Hawthorn, Common Dogwood and Guelder Rose. Each native species is significant for supporting specific insects. For instance Blackthorn is a habitat for the rare Brown Hairstreak butterfly. Some saplings had died, some had barely sur-

vived, but some had actually thrived. Most of the survivors were in bud and ready to start the Spring growth. We look forward to seeing the new shrubs begin to get established this year. The planting area certainly looks cleaner without the plastic. We also look forward to tackling the jobs piling up in the copse. It is mainly an un-managed space, but all woodlands need management, and have always been managed, ever since there have been people to do so. The council’s park rangers have been barely visible in the past 12 months, switching to Covid duties, and we need their tools to move trees and un-block the pathways. More details of future workdays, and the restrictions that would apply, as always, are found on our website, www.threecorneredcopse.org.uk; also news of any more suspicious devices. Simon Baxendale

10 years of Hove Beach Croquet Club You don’t hear much talk of ‘big society’ any more, but it was at that time (2011) and on that principle, that my friend Adrian Bunting and I started Hove Beach Croquet Club. We wanted it to be a place where anyone could come along and hang out, sit in a deckchair, on our wonderful Hove seafront, watch the world go by and maybe play a bit of croquet. In the early days, we would set out the pitch on a Saturday at lunchtime and hope that people would come, or that we could talk someone into a game. Some days noone came, but then maybe the next day a few people would turn up and on these small wins we’d carry on. It is really a story Every group and every individual has a of keeping at it. story. Over the last 10 years, we have been running croquet sessions for local charities. They bring groups down, usually in the morning, and we set out the deckchairs and pitches and give them whatever coaching they need to get started. We are able to provide an environment where people can relax, chat, develop friendships and focus on something that is a million miles away from the daily grind of living with severe physical or mental health issues.
If you are involved with a local group who might benefit from some croquet therapy, get in touch. There is no charge and I promise they will love it. Graeme Kerr hovebeachcroquetclub@gmail.com

13 Meet a local resident who publishes books…
Jo Baldwin Trott moved to West Hove from London last summer. She works from home as a business mentor, author and publisher. She has just published “Being Fine. The Other F Word”, 14 stories, mostly from men, encouraging us to share our worries. Have you been happy with your decision to move to West Hove? My kids summed it up, ‘We should have moved here years ago, Mum.’ We are very happy. I have loved Hove since I was six years old. I regularly visited my great-aunt with my dad on our rare holidays together. What sort of books do you publish? I publish two types: purpose driven sole-author books and multi-author books for the social consciousness. ‘Silver Linings’ are positive stories from lockdown from around the world. ‘Being Fine. The other ‘F’ word’ is encouraging men to speak up and to share their fears. Mental health is worsening. Men wear masks, worry about shame and are too good at keeping quiet and sometimes to tragic ends. As one reviewer said, ‘It should have been written years ago, it might have saved my marriage.’ All my books support a charity, too. ‘Being Fine’ supports MyBlackDog.co - an online peer-to-peer service. Tell us about your next book… Women Leading in our New World is the second in the series on equality in leadership. They’re inspiring messages for wom-
en to embrace leadership and for men and women to lead more compassionately together. Our world has changed, leadership should follow. And a book on immunity. This is the word I would love to see trending, instead of vaccine. You are a director of 50:50 Parliament. Tell us about that… Founder Frances Scott took action when so many do not. In 2013 alone in her kitchen she wrote down “50:50 - equal Parliament”. She saw the urgency for a representative government. Until we achieve equal governance women will continue to be the meal on the table. A third isn’t good enough. Women steer clear of local and national politics for very good reasons, we help them to tackle those reasons. I mentor candidates and host events. We now support over 2,000 women of all parties. I’ll probably stand one day, too. What do you like to do to relax? Get a coffee from Big Beach Café and walk along the seafront with my daughters and our Yorkie Nala. I love singing and writing songs or listening to music, preferably live. I can’t wait for gigs again. Front Row Jo will be back. For more information, visit jobaldwintrott.com

Shipwreck The sailing vessel “Ville de Napoleon” hard aground on one of the Aldrington beaches on 11 November 1891, after a violent gale. Local historian Judy Middleton says on her website (hovehistory.blogspot.com) that the five French sailors were rescued and taken to The Adur Hotel on Kingsway, now The Gather Inn. Another vessel which arrived a few hours later also ran aground but unfortunately only one of the four-man Welsh crew was saved.

17 Meet a local resident who is setting up a new estate agency…
Poets Person…Kevin Keehan Why did you decide to set up your own estate agency? I have worked in the property industry for the past 15 years, starting out in estate agency before moving into the property investment and development sector. Friends and family would often ask for my advice when it came to selling or renting their home because of my experience. My partner in the business is a close friend of mine, Chris Pearson, who started out in estate agency also 15 years ago, and when the opportunity arose of acquiring our now office on Portland Road, we knew the time was right for us to make the leap of faith and open our own agency. When are you opening and where will your office be? We officially opened our doors on the 17th March and our office is located at 95 Portland Road. Having grown up in Hove, Portland Road and the surrounding areas like Poets Corner and the New Church Road district have become very trendy and sought-after places to live, so it’s great to be amongst the vibrancy the area offers. Will your business be different from others?
type of people who can just sit back and wait for the phone to ring. We like nothing more than building relationships along the way and seeing the happy faces when handing over the keys on completion. Are many people moving into the area at the moment? Brighton and Hove has always been a sought after place to live and has never been shy of buyers re-locating from London and surrounding areas in particular, with numbers only increasing since the first lockdown was lifted. We are very lucky where we live and you can totally understand why it’s so in demand. We understand that you have also been managing AFC Varndeanians, a county league football team. Tell us more about that… I have played on the Sussex non-league football circuit since leaving school and most recently I was player-manager at AFC Varndeanians, who play their trade in the Southern Combination Football League. My football will have to take a back seat now that Pearson Keehan is open and Saturdays are proving very busy already with viewings and valuations. I’m not out of football completely though; I am manager and chairman of my son Zach’s football team – Seagulls FC.

Hove Waste Site to operate from 7am Waste service provider Veolia have successfully applied for permission to change their operating hours to allow the Household Waste Recycling Site off Old Shoreham Road to be serviced from 7am instead of 8am, Monday to Friday. There will be no change to the public opening hours. Veolia also asked for changes to where different recycling materials must be placed. Glass, hardcore, asbestos and paper will be moved to the western side of the site. The proposed changes have already been implemented partly due to the impacts of Covid-19.
Veolia wanted to change the hours to allow containers to be emptied before the site opens to the public, so that it won’t need to Another commented: “During hot summer close to the public during the day, days we already get the smell as it is too Veolia wanted to change the hours to allow containers to be emptied before the site opens to the public, so that it won’t need to close to the public during the day, which often causes a queue of cars into the site. The council received 20 objections. A number of representations expressed concerns about the transfer of food waste onto the site; however, the application didn’t seek to introduce food waste. There were also concerns about vermin, smells, air pollution from the communal bin storage, health and safety, increase in noise and disturbance from the additional open hours, and an increase in traffic. The west flank of the site backs onto the gardens of houses in Aldrington Avenue and one local resident said: “Commencing operations at 7am will increase the noise and nuisance to these residents earlier in the day when they should be entitled to less road noise.”
close to the residential area. If communal bin waste will be included this would only get worse.” A report to the Planning Committee said that none of the waste groups to be relocated would result in additional odours. Existing measures would ensure noise impacts are maintained at an acceptable level. There have been no complaints to the council regarding noise or odour for over four years.
At the Planning Committee’s meeting on 10th March, some members commented that they thought the queues of cars into the site were due to the temporary cycle lane on the Old Shoreham Road. Cllr Chris Henry said he lived near the area and it was chaos. He said that as the cycle lane was temporary, the change of operating hours should also be temporary. An amendment was made to limit permission for the change of operating hours to two years and the committee voted unanimously to support the application.

21 Councillor Robert Nemeth, Conservative councillor for Wish ward, on sea swimming in West Hove…
Wish Ward Councillor News As sea-swimming becomes more and more popular in West Hove, the time has come for us to have a lifeguard station here during summer months.
POETS CORNER
Working with swimming safety campaigners such as Karen Young, and numerous swimming clubs and seafront businesses, Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I will be upping our campaign for this vital facility henceforth. A variety of different discussions and tragic incidents has led us to conclude that the lifeguard service needs to be extended from the King Alfred to a point further west – perhaps south of the Lagoon. We began asking questions a year ago, starting with the positions and timings of the buoys in response to concerns about boats passing too close to swimmers. Such incidents are accidents waiting to happen. More recently, working with the West Hove Forum, I asked a long series of questions about the lack of safety flags in West Hove, particularly in response to sewage leaks, which are more common than one might think. I stated that more effort could be made to alert the public and local doctors’ surgeries. Most tragically, I raised at a meeting of Full Council the awful loss of Andrea Lauro who set out to sea from close to Hove Lagoon by kayak in August last year. It was a seemingly calm day, yet the sea was unpredictably choppy. Not long afterwards, and in a similar spot, Gareth Jones was lost to the sea whilst walking his dog. Our community was devastated by these incidents. In the summer of 2018, lifeguards in Brighton & Hove carried out 86 water rescues and saved at least 24 lives. First aid was administered to around 250 beach-goers and around 226 missing people were found.
Robert with swimming safety campaigner Karen Young
There were issues with the lifeguard service last year in terms of recruitment which has been put down to the COVID crisis. Such issues are feared for the current season too. Looking ahead though, it makes absolute sense that a lifeguard station is created in West Hove. Such a facility would be manned from 10am to 7pm and work in conjunction with safety flags, buoys and updated patrol routines. Not only would the presence of a lifeguard station increase safety on the beach, it would help with seafront crime – such as vandalism of beach huts and damage to the shelters and toilets. Please do e-mail me on robert.nemeth@ brighton-hove.gov.uk if you can support in some way. Cllr Robert Nemeth

23 Poets Corner news…
The Friends of Stoneham Park What we want to do is channel some of that community spirit for Stoneham Park. At our recent public meeting, we decided we would go ahead with a summer fair in July, subject to all the usual caveats. We hope that restrictions will be lifted during the spring and summer and that some sort of normality will return by July. If so, and of course it is still a big ‘if’, then the fairground rides, the street food and ice cream, stalls and entertainment will return to the park. The only snag is the amount of hard work and organisation that goes into these events. All we really need are people to offer to spend an hour or two serving drinks behind the bar, or staffing a children’s sideshow game, or flipping burgers to make the event go like something of which we can all be proud. If you would like to get involved, then please drop us a line at events@friendsofstonehampark.uk.
POETS CORNER
Much has been spoken about community spirit recently. The pandemic has drawn in its wake a greater awareness of our neighbours and our neighbourhood, whether it be street WhatsApp groups, volunteering for the NHS, or chipping in to help others.
censing law, it will all be worth it in the end! The past month has showed how hard work put in a few years ago can come to fruition. The crocuses and daffodils that have been evident as winter becomes spring were all planted by the Friends and continue to delight visitors to the park. We are also pleased to note a fall in the amount of fly-tipping on the park’s periphery - it seems the message has got through! And, yes, we have even been promised two extra litter bins to take the strain of the extra rubbish generated at weekends. We hope to see them soon.
As ambitious as ever, we are also hoping to hold at least one and (perhaps) two outdoor cinemas. We were all set to show the 1985 adventure film The Goonies back in October but the weather and then the virus defeated us. The show is on hold and will be back again as soon as we can screen it. As we have now acquired an enormous three-and-a-half metre wide cinema screen and have managed to scythe our way through the thicket of entertainment li- Richard Hearnden

24 A lovely way to remember the lives lost through Covid…
Brighton & Hove Covid Memorial Quilt Sewing a 10cm square to remember a life lost … it seems such a small thing. But, if a name carved onto a war memorial can offer comfort, then a name embroidered onto a patchwork quilt will surely have the same effect.
A group of women has joined together to sew a quilt to honour the Brighton and Hove residents who died from Covid this past year. Some are experienced stitchers, while others haven’t threaded a needle in 30 years. The idea for the quilt came from Emma Daniel who, along with other Brighton and Hove women, had contributed to The Women’s Quilt in 2017, with each square remembering one of the 598 women killed in the UK by their partners, between 2009 and 2015. What if we created a Brighton and Hove quilt, with names of the (currently) 442 mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends and neighbours who have died from Covid in 2020 and 2021? We all agreed that it would be a hugely worthwhile project and immediately found our fabrics, needles and threads. Squares are currently being sewn, embroidered and embellished, to eventually
become a huge quilt which, we hope, will find a permanent home in our city, so that it can be visited as a place of remembrance. Sewing a square for a stranger is quite a responsibility, especially if you don’t know their favourite colours or interests. But, if it’s made with care and sensitivity, it feels important and is a very moving experience. All the stitchers confirm this. ‘It’s such a wonderful project that I’m proud to be a part of,’ says Louise, who has sewn squares for Thora, Charlotte and Brenda. If you’d like to join the team of stitchers or have a name included, please email bhcovidquilt@gmail.com. You can also get involved via our Facebook group: Brighton and Hove Covid Memorial Quilt Volunteers. https://www.facebook. com/groups/742369290035047 Sue Teddern

27 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…
RAF police dogs on Hove Lawns
The second dog is performing an equally impressive feat. He has been ordered to keep perfectly still underneath his handler’s arm during the jump, and he looks up at him with adoration, almost as if he is saying, ‘I’m doing it right, aren’t I?’ The crowd, with the children pushed to the front, are thoroughly enjoying it. When this photograph was taken, police dogs were a much-loved part of major shows and public displays. Forty police dogs and their handlers had first appeared at the Three Counties Agricultural Show at RAF Staverton in 1947 and their success had been immediate, particularly since one of them had been pulling a cart with a ‘German prisoner of war’ – actually Aircraftsman F Elliott - on it. They quickly became part of the annual Royal Tournament Show at London’s Earl’s Court and an indispensable part of the RAF public relations department. They needed to engage audiences on their own account, too, as most of the Alsatians accepted for training as RAF police dogs were, and, in fact, still are, donated by members of the public. Their popularity reached a peak in 1960, when a record 250,000 people attended the 30 performances of the Royal Tournament between June and July. The draw was a three-year-old dog named Judge

who was regularly ‘shot’ by intruders who appeared to be making a sudden attack on the arena. The gasp of shock was followed by growing dismay as the dog lay still for several minutes. Calls, whistles – and, doubtless, tears from the children - went unheeded. You can imagine the audience’s relief when Judge jumped up and went to his handler at the end of the show. A publicity leaflet written about the RAF police dogs in 1958 called them ‘an indispensable weapon in our security armoury’. Training, the leaflet emphasised, ‘is done by firmness and kindness; cruelty, however, slight, is never tolerated; an Alsatian dog works to please its master, not because it is forced to do so. The order given more often than any other to the trainee handlers is, ‘Praise your dog.’ www.thekeep.info

29 Exciting news on the Ledward Centre…
Brighton’s new LGBTQ+ Centre is emerging
Major world cities have for decades offered them, and they exist in Manchester, Birmingham, London and others. Indeed, Brighton does already have The Rainbow Hub on St James’s Street, which has proved to be a welcome point of contact for LGBT+ people seeking support, information or guidance, in a safe, non-judgemental environment. But now, plans are afoot for something larger, and with more facilities: The Ledward Centre. Named after the much-missed community activist James Ledward, The Ledward Centre is in the cavernous, glass-fronted, former retail outlet space on Jubilee Street, within the celebrated Jubilee Library complex. It will include a café, bookshop and information point, as well as a cinema, onsite radio station, workspace, art gallery, meeting space and offices for LGBTQ+ magazine, Scene. The existing Rainbow Hub will move in, too. “The Ledward Centre has a lovely abbreviation – TLC – which encompasses what we’re all about: caring for the LGBTQ+ community and reaching those who are isolated within it,” says the Centre’s Director, Duncan Lustig-Prean. “From the light, modern and accessible building itself to the services and cultural activities for which it will be home, The Ledward Centre will live and breathe the values that make the full spectrum of Brighton’s LGBTQ+ communities so confident, vibrant and proud.” It’s clear that it’s needed: despite advances in rights legislation, studies show that
LGBTQ+ communities experience disproportionate levels of social isolation, health issues, and discrimination. Therefore, a welcoming, safe space where support, community and uplift are available under one roof is key. Membership will be free, and open to the whole of the LGBTQ+ community and our allies, and members will be asked to consider making a regular monthly donation according to what they feel they can pay to help to cover operating costs. “The Ledward Centre is on track to become a shining example of an inclusive community working together to support one another, understand one another, and come together to have fun,” says Chair of The Ledward Centre, Christopher Gull. “We’re overwhelmed by the positive reaction so far, and are hugely grateful to the city, and to the LGBTQ+ community, for their support. The Centre will be a space for our LGBTQ+ communities to enjoy for generations to come.” The Ledward Centre is calling for volunteers and supporters. Visit www.ledcen.org.uk for more. Torsten Højer

31 News from the council…
Work has begun on an £80m roll-out of full-fibre broadband throughout the city, beginning with Moulsecoomb & Bevendean ward.
Hydrogen fuel revolution Brighton & Hove City Council is part of a new energy group dedicated to putting Greater Brighton at the forefront of a hydrogen fuel revolution. Local authorities, businesses and organisations from across the region have formed a group called Hydrogen Sussex. By pooling expertise and lobbying power, Hydrogen Sussex aims to position the clean fuel as a mainstream energy carrier to help the drive to become a zero-carbon economy. Hydrogen Sussex will be well placed to support and stimulate the development of clean alternatives for some of the highest emitters of carbon and air pollution that are also critical for the UK economy – planes, ships, lorries and buses.
This will mean faster and more reliable internet, with connections less prone to slowing down during busy times of the day or when several devices are connected at the same time. The rest of the city is set to follow over the next four to five years. Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty said: “This represents real progress not just for our residents but will play an incredibly important part in supporting the local economy as we plan our recovery from the pandemic. While there may be some disruption during installation, we have been assured by the company installing the technology, CityFibre, that this will be kept to a minimum.” More information can be found at cityfibre.com.
The bid to encourage the development of hydrogen comes as one the group’s members, Shoreham Port, begins work on an ambitious new partnership with H2evolution to create a green hydrogen hub. A planning application will shortly be developed to establish a 20-megawatt electrolysis plant to the south of the port’s famous lock gates. Hydrogen Sussex members are helping to facilitate projects: Ricardo and Brighton & Hove Buses are working together on a project to convert existing buses to hydrogen fuel cells, and Hydrogen Sussex has enabled organisations to collaborate on bid applications. Councillor Phélim Mac Cafferty, leader of Brighton & Hove City Council, said: “This is the first step of many to develop our region as a hydrogen fuel hub.” Hydrogen Sussex can be found on LinkedIn and Twitter @HydrogenSussex

33 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at the wildlife of Hove…
Paradise ponds Although I don’t get to survey ponds as much these days, they’re still one of my favourite habitats. The Sussex Wildlife Trust has some fantastic wetlands and ponds, but even our concrete dew ponds provide a vital habitat for a host of animals and plants. That’s right, a concrete dew pond had Great Crested Newt, Smooth Newt, Palmate Newt and Common Toad as well as a load of bugs and beetles! GENERAL
If you’re looking for an instant biodiversity boost to your garden then adding accessible water is a great way of doing it. At first it seems surprising that animals and plants can find their way to virgin ponds so quickly when we usually just see them milling about under the surface, but what if their pond dries out? They must have a way of finding a new pond in order to survive. Well, most diving beetles and water boatmen are capable flyers able to cover large distances looking for reflected light from the surface of water bodies. Glass produces a similar effect and this is why you sometimes find your car windscreen covered in mayflies in the summer. Even the heavier set species like Frogs and Newts can travel long distances to find water and may get to your pond in the year after construction. Even quicker than that are the birds and insects that will use the pond for drinking and bathing. There are some key factors to a good garden pond for wildlife. First is make sure that it can hold water! A liner would be useful, or you could use clay if you’re feeling fancy. Second is that you don’t need to go too deep. Most diversity in a pond is between 10 and 30 cm so having as much of the pond at this depth as possible is ideal. A good way of making
sure you get this depth is by having gently sloping sides, which also means wildlife can get in and out easily. Finally, when filling the pond make sure to use rainwater from a butt where possible as this will be untreated and better than using tap water. Once this is all done, you can sit back and relax whilst the plants and animals start preferring your garden to your neighbour’s! For inspiration, I recommend following the development of Kate Bradbury’s (Brightonian) pond on Twitter. glennnorris@sussexwt.org.uk

34 This advice was sent in by Annie Chester of Middleton Avenue…
Foxes – to feed or not to feed? In Middleton Avenue we have recently had problems with food being left in plastic bags for foxes. Foxes will catch rats, but if you leave unsuitable food for them, you will be encouraging rats. I love foxes and would not be averse to leaving food for them, but certain rules need to be followed. If you do choose to feed them, I hope you will keep the following facts in mind when you do so, so that your choice is an informed one: 1.
Do not feed them regularly. Not everybody likes them, and a concern is that foxes, if fed regularly, will come to depend on humans for their food. They won’t starve if you stop feeding them, but they could be hungry and, unafraid of people, could get aggressive in approaching other people.
2.
Make sure you leave them the right foods and certainly NOT in plastic bags. In general, the best things to feed them are those they could find in nature, for example: • Raw meat (cooked is okay).
Foxes will generally pick up a closed plastic bag and they will take it to a place they consider safe before opening it. Because many of the contents of the bags they brought here were totally unsuitable for foxes, they left them strewn all over the
Foxes will catch rats, but if you leave unsuitable food for them, you will be encouraging rats. pavement or people’s gardens, along with the plastic bags. As the contents included such things as quantities of bread, sweets, baked beans etc, you can imagine what a mess it left for us to clear up.
• Fresh fruit or berries. • Fresh vegetables. • Earthworms (foxes eat earthworms and other insects, sometimes as a large part of their diet). 3.
Remember foxes are canids (dog family) so these are the things you should NOT feed them: • Chocolate - poisonous to canids: it can make them very sick and even kill them. • Highly processed foods like candy, bread, potato chips and other snacks.

37 News from Martlets hospice…
Why Gus is Willing to help Martlets Martlets is a local charity that relies on the generosity of local people to fund its services and one in three patients are cared for thanks to gifts in wills. Gus Ferguson explains why he’s chosen to remember Martlets in his will. He also shares his memories of the care Martlets gave him and his wife Margot.
“The majority of my estate will be left in trust to my son Oscar; he has special needs and is on the autistic spectrum. Oscar volunteers in one of Martlets’ charity shops. He’s really looking forward to going back when COVID restrictions are lifted. I’m also planning to raise money for Martlets through my Keyboard Karaoke nights in Brighton, once social venues open up again. So, we’re doing our bit as a family to support the work Martlets does. “Margot had cancer and our oncologist connected us with Martlets. She was under Martlets’ care for the last 10 weeks of her life and spent her last birthday on the ward. We did make preparations for Margot to die at home, but in the end she needed to come in. The care was fantastic. The staff got to know us and were supportive in a way that showed they really understand people as individuals. “With Margot’s condition, and Oscar being on the spectrum, it was important for us to put our trust in Martlets. 40 Could you provide a foster home for a vulnerable child?
Fusion Fostering Fusion Fostering are an independent foster care agency who are looking to recruit carers from all walks of life. Regional Manager Fiona Hutchison told us more… Why should people consider fostering? There are many vulnerable children within our care system who need secure, loving foster homes, but not enough people are coming forward. Fostering is life changing. It’s not always easy; there’ll be days when you wonder why you’re doing it. But there’ll also be magical days. It may be the smallest of things that’ll show you you’re making a difference; the first signs that your child is beginning to trust you and believe you actually care. A smile, a hug, doing what you ask for the first time, sharing a painful
memory, just hanging out with you. It’s those important little moments that will remind you of why you chose to foster. Can anyone foster? There’s an assessment process; we need to make sure that fostering is right for you, and you for it, but don’t worry, you get lots of support along the way. What kind of people make good foster carers? There are some myths about the types of people who make good foster carers. You shouldn’t rule yourself out just because you

42 Get involved with the PAG Group for better green spaces…
Palmeira and Adelaide Garden Group Many dogwalkers and families enjoy being in Adelaide Crescent and Palmeira Square gardens. We need to ensure that these gardens maintain their beauty for everyone to use now, and in the future.
What is PAG? Founded in 2019 Palmeira and Adelaide Garden Group (PAG) aims to deliver attractive, biodiverse green spaces, successfully provide education and volunteering opportunities and promote a sense of pride and ownership of these wonderful green spaces. Residents from across Brighton and Hove use these gardens, and PAG has amassed an impressive 200 supporters and a number of volunteers that clean the gardens
on a daily and monthly basis. Volunteering improves residents’ mental and physical well-being and creates opportunities for neighbours to meet. Funding They have faced local challenges but have proudly overcome them and firmly established themselves in the area. Events in the summer of 2019 raised a total of £1600, which included sponsorship from local businesses. PAG wants to work in partnership with the council and has put forward an ‘easy maintenance’

43 plan for the gardens, which also aims to increase pollinators. Table sales in 2019 included stalls owned by local artisans selling various exciting products such as upcycled furniture, ceramics, artwork and gift items. The Easter egg hunt was great fun for children and adults alike and raffle tickets raised much needed funds. PAG wants to provide ‘bee hotels’ and other facilities to encourage children to spend more time outdoors, creating a sense of belonging and joy. The importance of lockdown in green spaces Lockdown has made us see the significance of green spaces to our mental well-being and overall happiness; however increased litter is a major problem. It has negative impacts on the environment and wildlife. PAG will be linking with the next Keep Britain Tidy campaign from the 28th May-13th June. See Twitter page @KeepBritainTidy #GBSpringClean for more details. Upcoming events PAG are planning four amazing events this year, to recreate a sense of community as we slowly become accustomed to the new norm. In May/June they would love to hold a treasure hunt and in July/August/September they are planning to hold more table sales. No specific dates can be displayed yet as council permissions are required but PAG will publicise details on their Facebook group and on ‘Next Door Palmeira’ as soon as possible. 45 Homesharing is a great way for older people to stay in their own homes…
A new member of a Brighton family Lockdown has been challenging for many, and for the older population, isolation can be particularly challenging. Whilst there are no easy solutions, more and more people seem to be reaping the benefit of homesharing. After seeing interviews on the national news, an older lady in Brighton found a homeshare through Two Generations. Here’s her family’s experience:
“The whole process felt very safe with all the checks that were done and Two Generations has been fantastic all around, from careful research to answering all of our questions and making sure we had the best possible fit. “We have found it to be a great experience and, having got to know her during the process, Alison already feels like a new member of the family! We’re really excited about Alison, our new Homesharer moving in!” The Morris Family Homesharing: Physical help and companionship In a homeshare, a younger ‘homesharer’ lives in a room in the home of the older ‘householder’. In return, the homesharer offers practical support around the house and companionship. There’s no rent. Instead, the pair pays a small monthly fee to the homeshare organisation, keeping them accountable to mediate any issues that may arise throughout the arrangement. There is also a financial bursary in place for any householder who would struggle to pay their fee.
GENERAL
“We contacted Two Generations for my partner’s elderly mother who needed an overnight presence as well as companionship in order to allow her to stay in her own home independently. We found both in Two Generations, who have been nothing short of brilliant in terms of providing us with a wonderful Homesharer, Alison. Homeshare programmes, like the one run by Two Generations, help by matching householders with the most compatible homesharer, considering both’s interests, cultures and also the kind of support needed, like food shopping and technology to stay connected with their family. Is it safe? Two Generations perform thorough references, Enhanced DBS checks, and conduct introductory meetings via phone/video calls. Covid-19 protocols are in place so the householders meet the programme coordinators and potential homesharers virtually before agreeing to share their homes. Two Generations have also partnered with charities such as TogetherCo in Brighton for a secure referral process. If you feel that sharing your spare room with a credible homesharer could benefit your physical and mental health, give Two Generations a call on 03333 44 77 38.

Developers of an open-air swimming pool on the site of the former Peter Pan’s playground in Madeira Drive on Brighton seafront have been granted permission to change their plans for the site.
They have reduced the number of modular building units, increased the floorspace and increased the length of the swimming pool to 50 metres (from 25 metres). They have also been granted permanent consent for the pool and 10-year temporary consent for the modular buildings. They had been granted five-year temporary consent in 2019 for the whole scheme. Over 300 letters of representation were submitted in support of the application. However, there were objections from heritage groups, who were concerned that the design would not complement the historic arches opposite and would interrupt views from Madeira Terraces. The council’s Seafront Team, however, said: “Installing a 50m permanent facility will help Sea Lanes to create a stand-out sports destination which will be a unique attraction for open water swimmers and athletes from across the country.” The committee approved the application by seven votes to two and Sea Lanes Brighton hope to begin construction of the pool in November. It will be known as the National Open Water Swimming Centre and it’s due to open in spring 2022
Christmas market for Valley Gardens Councillors have approved a bid from local business E3 Events to operate a Christmas market in Valley Gardens in the centre of Brighton (St Peter’s Square, Richmond Square, Victoria Gardens and Old Steine). The proposal includes giving a percentage of profits to support the local community and Valley Gardens. The preferred bid also includes a commitment to prevent the use of single-use plastics in the market. The Christmas market will be free to attend and run for three years, starting this year, from 26 November to 31 December. It will offer a mixture of retail stalls, food and drink, entertainment and attractions. Cllr Martin Osborne, co-chair of the Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee, said: “We are hoping to be able to support an offer of outdoor events by the end of this year to aid the recovery. The Christmas market will provide opportunities for local suppliers and offer a wonderful winter attraction for residents and visitors.”

Manual weed removal to continue A report to Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting on 16th March, gave an update on Cityclean’s management of weeds. The council developed a plan in 2019 to end the use of pesticides on public land, which means that manual techniques are now used for weed removal.
Staff have reported that manual weed removal is a lot harder than with pesticides. The preferred method is using a weed ripper. A new brush attachment for sweepers was trialled; however, it wasn’t strong enough. There are no other pesticide-free products that are effective enough to tackle weeds across the city. Strong salt water will kill weeds but could also damage vehicles and other highway structures. Trip hazards: The report acknowledges that the growth of weeds around pavement slabs results in trip hazards and will lead to an increase in claims against the council. One concern is that weeds are growing through tarmac where it has been used to replace pavements during construction work and the ground has not been treated. Hoes can’t be used on tarmac without damage to the pavement. Council officers will produce a further report on this issue. Plan for 2021: This year weeding staff will be included in the seasonal recruitment campaign rather than relying on agency staff.
GENERAL
The report said that the weeding season for hard surfaces takes place from March to October and no glyphosate had been used in 2020. The weeding schedule was deeply affected by Covid-19 and there were issues with recruitment of staff. Areas were targeted based on feedback, complaints, observations and past experience. Weed removal will be rotated so that crews are using the equipment for limited periods of time, for health and safety reasons. Specific areas will be targeted, using Cityclean’s better understanding of where weeds are kept down by footfall and where more attention is required. Benefits: A link with the end of glyphosate use cannot be proven; however, bees and other insects seem to be thriving in the city. Some residents have asked the council not to remove the weeds when they have seen insects and wildflowers flourish. Public consultation: There was to have been a consultation on weeding in 2020, but this was disrupted by the pandemic. A public consultation is now planned for autumn 2021. A cleaning blitz involving local communities is also planned for 28 May to 13 June. Residents who would like excessive weeds removed from public land can contact Cityclean on 01273 292929 or email cityclean@brighton-hove.gov.uk.

53 Healthy living advice from Nathalie Sansonetti…
5 easy steps to instinctive eating I don’t dispute the fact that these months can be beneficial to those who would otherwise never give their livers a break. In a way, it also encourages some self-awareness, as many people become aware of how much healthier they feel when they ‘cut’ x, y or z. However, for many, the ‘dry’ months are often followed by very ‘wet’ 11 months of the year. This naturally happens when eliminating something that brings us pleasure – even for a short while - triggers a feeling of lack and deprivation. In my practice, I always work to improve one’s self-awareness and instinctive way of eating or drinking – all year round, rather than when marketers want to boost specific food and drink sales. So, rather than implementing ‘blanket’ eliminations (and subsequent ‘lack’ mindset), I would encourage you to aim for balance 12 months of the year. This way, you won’t need to eliminate anything, really, ever. Here are 5 easy steps to make some positive – more instinctive - tweaks to your daily habits: Re-acquaint yourself with food. Food is never the enemy or the cause of your health or weight issues. Ask yourself: how do you view food/drink? Is it a gap-filler? Something scary or to be resented? What am I not digesting from my environment? Recognise your attitude to food and where it comes from. Never ignore or suppress hunger. Instead, accept and respect your body’s signals.
Eat up to about 70% of your fullness levels. You’ll need to slow down to figure that out. Eat every 3-4 hours: this will balance out your blood sugar levels throughout the day and help beat the deprivation mindset and cravings. Appreciation. Some encourage saying a blessing before eating. If that’s too much for you, just say thank you before you eat or drink. Realising why you eat or drink will change how, when and what you eat and drink. It will help you to be more in touch with yourself, how you feel about what you put into your body, how it affects your health, energy, focus, emotions. Let’s declare 2021 a National Healing Foods Awareness Year. Nathalie Sansonetti, Nutritional Therapist & Health Coach Want support to achieve your 2021 health goals? I’m not a fan of ‘dry January’, ‘Dechox March’ or any of the so-called national days that direct us – mostly for economic reasons – into a deprivation mindset.
54 Local psychotherapist Donna Butler with advice on mental wellbeing…
Mental health after the lockdown Donna Butler lives in the Sackville Road area. She has spent 34 years working in the NHS and until recently was lead psychotherapist at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, providing emotional support to staff through the pandemic. She is a co-author of ‘Mental Health & Wellbeing in the Workplace’. How have the hospital staff been affected by Covid? The impact has been profound. Staff were tired before the pandemic - and these are people who are trained and are used to being resilient. For NHS workers, making moral decisions whilst being fearful that they may take the virus home, has had an impact. For some, it has manifested in anxiety, stress, depression and feeling burnt out. What sort of reactions to the pandemic are “normal”? Our individual reaction depends on many factors - personality type, family health history and whether you have felt isolated. At the start of the pandemic, many people experienced intense fear and anxiety, whilst other people were relieved not to have to go to work or college. People had a wide range of feelings - depression, feeling angry, stressed, hopeless. For some, the pandemic has been a creative time. It is important to remember everyone is different. What feelings should people be concerned about? Feeling disconnected from family and friends may have triggered mental health issues. If anxiety or depression stops you being able to connect with life after restrictions are lifted, it may change with time. If not, seek help from your doctor. Many people have been bereaved. If a sense of hopelessness develops into suicidal thoughts it is important to seek help.

55 News from the council about a phone app rewarding active and sustainable travel…
Move for Change
The ‘Move for Change’ initiative, powered by the BetterPoints app (moveforchange. betterpoints.uk), has been launched to encourage and reward residents and employees for walking, cycling, and using public transport. By signing up to the Move for Change challenge, residents and commuters can collect points which can then be exchanged for discounts and vouchers at local shops. Please continue to follow all government guidance and restrictions on movement and travel. App users can also earn or win BetterPoints or BetterTickets (for monthly online raffle prizes) by taking part in surveys and competitions. Local businesses that have signed up to offer rewards so far include: HISBE; Infinity Foods; Organic Earth; Rhythm & Bikes; Cranks; Bike Shed; BN3 Bikes; Cycle Wand; and Baker St Bikes. You could collect points for: • Your walk to work • Using active travel on the school run • Cycling around the city • Leisure and exercise activity • Using local buses and BTN BikeShare
The way we travel around Brighton & Hove is changing. Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have seen more people choose to walk or cycle short distances, while the number of people working from home has also increased. We are also facing a climate emergency. The council has pledged to become a carbon neutral city by 2030 and encouraging more people to choose active and sustainable transport means we can further reduce toxic emissions and improve the city’s air quality. Active travel also has many proven mental and physical health benefits. Chair of the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee Amy Heley said: “Using BetterPoints is a great way of being rewarded for something that already has so many benefits. If we’re to meet our goals of being a carbon neutral city, we need to do everything we can to encourage more of our residents and those who work in our city to travel actively and sustainably. I’d also like to thank those local businesses who have signed up to offer rewards. If we can get more people walking, cycling, scooting and using public transport while supporting our local economy at the same time, then it’s win-win.”

58 City news…
Council looks into recycling pots, tubs and trays A report to the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 16th March examined the benefits and disadvantages, as well as the possible cost of recycling plastic pots, tubs and trays (known as PTT). At present, only plastic bottles are collected for recycling in Brighton & Hove, but many people have called for other types of plastic to be recycled, as they are in some other parts of the country. Pots, tubs and trays are made from a much cheaper kind of plastic than bottles. PTT in the city is currently sent to the Energy Recovery Facility (ERF) incinerator in Newhaven which generates electricity for 25,000 homes. None of it goes to landfill. Some parts of household PTT such as polypropylene are commonly sorted by other local authorities, but some of the other plastic types are harder to recycle and have to be sent on to the incinerator, with added costs. Advantages of recycling PTT: PTT is bulky but lightweight. The estimated yearly total of recycled PTT would weigh around 550 tonnes, increasing the city’s recycling rate by 0.5%. Recycling PTT would reduce the contamination level within recycling bins. This is because many residents already place PTT in recycling bins, believing it will be recycled. The contents of the whole recycling bin are then contaminated and have to be treated as waste. In some cases, a whole lorry load of recycling then has to be treated as waste. Reducing the volume of plastics sent to the Energy Recovery Facility will reduce its carbon emissions.
Disadvantages of recycling PTT: The mixed nature of the plastic material means that only 22-39% of it would be regularly recycled. The rest would be sent to the incinerator and incur a disposal cost. There would be a significant cost to capture the relatively small amount of lightweight material and then to sort and process it. Some PTT collected in the UK is still being exported and disposed of irresponsibly and damaging the environment in developing countries. Once Veolia (the company who have the contract for waste management in Brighton & Hove) have sold the materials on, they will have no control over what happens to them. The report says a feasibility study is needed on retrofitting the Hollingdean Materials Recovery Facility recycling centre to enable it to introduce PTT recycling. Veolia say they don’t recommend adapting the Hollingdean centre to recycle pots, trays and tubs, but they will continue to explore alternative options with the council.

Libraries Consultation
Seafront petition
A consultation on Brighton & Hove City Council’s Libraries Strategy is taking place. It opened on 22nd March and will end on 4th July.
A petition by Hove resident Andrea Lewis calling for the repair of seafront railings and furniture in Hove and Portslade was considered by the March Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture (TECC) Committee, having been referred from a meeting of the Full Council in January.
There are online surveys for three separate age-groups. Hard copies will also be available once libraries are open again for public use. The surveys are seeking people’s views on detailed aspects of the full range of libraries services, including asking why people don’t use them. They include detailed questions on library stock in all formats. The consultation is on the council’s consultation portal: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk

2.

3.

Committee Co-Chair Cllr Martin Osborne thanked Andrea Lewis for the petition. He said that the age of the Victorian seafront infrastructure created a particular challenge. The maintenance of assets is not divided by geographical area, but is prioritised by factors such as health and safety risk, condition and level of urgency. Cllr Osborne said: “Like most local authorities, the council faces a backlog in its required planned maintenance. Financial controls applied over a number of years have meant substantial cuts in what can be achieved within the annual programme.” The petition had asked how residents could help with crowdfunding projects. Cllr Osborne replied that residents would be welcome to crowdfund to support maintenance of a specific restoration project agreed with the council. The committee agreed to note the petition. J.H. Brighton Festival to return in May... The 54th Brighton Festival will return to the city with a celebration of art and culture from 1 May 2021, extending across the whole month and possibly into June.
Brighton Festival is known for presenting artistic work in new and interesting ways and 2021 will continue to celebrate a wide range of artforms, from visual art and installation, classical to contemporary music, theatre and comedy, film and literature. Following the latest government guidance on when lockdown restrictions can be eased, events will take place online, in unusual outdoor pop-up locations, and from 17 May live performances will open for socially distanced audiences in venues across the city. Brighton Dome will host events with Covid-secure public safety measures approved by the Good to Go industry mark. The popular Children’s Parade, which traditionally marks the opening day of the festival, will be adapted to be an event without gathering, creating a visual spectacle on Brighton’s streets for visitors to enjoy throughout the month. Community arts charity Same Sky has produced the much-loved event for over 30 years and will be offering schools and community groups alternative activities for children to make their own flags and artwork to honour the spirit of the event along the parade route in the city centre. Andrew Comben, Chief Executive of Brighton Festival, said: “Although the festival will feel different from previous years, without the large groups of people

coming together that we’re used to, we have been planning for a festival full of beauty and fun that can still happen with social distancing in place. We believe we can deliver a carefully managed, safe and responsible events programme that will help build confidence with our audiences to bring them back to what they love. Lemn Sissay’s artistic vision, and the way he speaks to the things that really matter, feels even more relevant today and I’m delighted he has brought fresh inspiration and direction to this year’s programme. We’ll be flexible in our planning and remain optimistic that, with the public’s help, the government’s roadmap will stay on track and that the city can look forward to an arts and culture-led recovery.” Brighton Festival 2021 launches on Tuesday 30 March 2021 at brightonfestival.org

What is likely to reopen in April? This magazine went to print in mid-March, so we are hoping that nothing has changed in the two weeks between then and the start of April. If all goes to plan, according to the Prime Minister’s roadmap we should see an opening up of certain businesses and venues in April.

People can use these venues in a group of six people, or with members of up to two households. At this step, formally organised outdoor sport will also return, provided it is Covid-secure. Indoor facilities should not be used, except for toilets, and no spectators will be allowed. Businesses will be able to host outdoor children’s activities for up to 15 people (not counting under-fives). Junior parkrun events will be returning from Sunday 11 April. No earlier than 12th April, non-essential retail and personal care facilities will be allowed to reopen. This will include hairdressers. Indoor sports and leisure facilities will also be able to reopen at this stage, including gyms, sports courts, swimming pools and dance studios. Community champions go Above & Beyond Stories of hope, kindness and humanity have been brought to life on the sides of 24 new Brighton and Hove buses.
Photos of community champions are now appearing on bus sides with a little bit about their amazing achievements on panels inside. The buses are on route 1, between Mile Oak, the city and Whitehawk. Brighton & Hove and Metrobus Managing Director Martin Harris said: “I’ve heard so many incredible stories of altruism and compassion in this city over the years and felt it was time to recognise and celebrate the people behind those stories.” Some are involved with supporting disabled families, others with keeping the city’s tap water clean, running football sessions for disabled children or connecting isolated people. There are community stars who have shown how table tennis can change the world, or people who have given homeless young people a bit of hope. Among those recognised are Wen Wei Xu and Tim Holtam of Brighton Table Tennis Club; Emily Kenward of local charity Time to Talk Befriending; and five members of the Possability People team. Community star Kay Sexton devotes her free time to local initiatives at Weald Allotments in Hove, including the Weald Community Fridge; and Charlotte Keynes of the Grace Eyre Foundation has made sure that people with learning disabilities have not felt alone during lockdown.
GENERAL
Brighton and Hove Buses went on a mission to find and celebrate people who have gone out of their way to make a positive impact on other people’s lives. Local community groups and members of the public were invited to nominate.

Another community champion is Gerald Flanagan, head park-keeper at Wish Park, who is known for the warm welcome he gives to every visitor. He also gives up his free time to help make the park a better place. At Hertford Infant and Nursery School, teachers Zoe McGuigan, Justine Harvey and Rachael Durneen have been busy keeping the school open for those that need it and keeping home learning going. They’ve worked hard to provide lifelines like food parcels and emotional support to the most vulnerable families. Executive Head Teacher Zoe McGuigan said: “Seeing ourselves on the bus has created a few giggles but this recognition highlights and celebrates the excellent work of every school. All our colleagues could be here as we need to all recognise that we have gone ‘Above and Beyond’! Thank you!” To see the full list of community champions, visit busesaboveandbeyond.co.uk

71 Brighton-based comedian Nik Coppin has used lockdown to write his first book…
Nik Coppin’s Comedy World Stand-up comedian Nik Coppin has performed around the world for 20 years. Forced to stay at home in Brighton for the past year, he wrote his first book, “Nik Coppin’s Comedy World”, featuring anecdotes from his adventures on tour. The book has been chosen as a finalist for the Wishing Shelf Book Awards. What is your favourite country to visit?
GENERAL
Now, that’s a hard one! There are so many great comedy clubs and wonderful friends I have around the world now that it’s hard to pick them apart. Scotland, Spain and Germany are amazing places with regard to mates and shows, and Southeast Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Cambodia are the same, but also have many fascinating aspects to them. But I suppose for sheer volume of shows with all the big festivals in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, as well as loads of friends, fascinating parts, wildlife and of course weather, Australia edges it, I reckon. Who are your favourite comedians? I think Richard Pryor tops that list for me. His stand-up comedy has really stood the test of time and his backstory in finding his comedic voice is fascinating. The amazing storytelling and longevity of Billy Connolly is also right up there for me and what Eddie Izzard has achieved with original offbeat comedy and unusual image has been spectacular too. All very hilarious, inspiring comedians as far as I’m concerned. Are you making any plans to resume touring later this year? I certainly hope I can tour this year with matters regarding the pandemic easing up. The Edinburgh Fringe is looking unlikely in August, so one can only hope that happens and I can get also get back to
Southeast Asia later this year and Australia in 2022. What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you on tour? Some people might think it’s funny me falling into a 4ft drainage ditch in Penang, Malaysia, whilst texting. Being bruised, battered and bloodied wasn’t funny at the time, but in retrospect it kind of was. That I could have died, especially if the ditch was full of water, isn’t really amusing, but turning up at my secure accommodation trying to get past security in such a state probably was. For more details, I guess you’ll have to get my book! “Nik Coppin’s Comedy World” is available from Amazon.

75 News from the council…
Symptom-free Covid testing Symptom-free community testing is now available in test centres and participating pharmacies across Sussex.
You can book a test at one of 25 pharmacies across Sussex or at one of two dedicated testing sites, one at the Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre in Brighton, one at Hove Town Hall. More pharmacies will be available across Sussex in the coming weeks. If you have already been vaccinated, you should still book a test as it’s possible to still carry the virus. The testing process takes around 10 minutes and booking in advance means there’s no waiting around. At both pharmacies and testing centres, you will carry out your own swab test and it will be processed by staff on site. You should receive your result within 30 minutes. It’s recommended that two tests a week are taken, three days apart. To make an appointment please go to www.brighton-hove.gov.uk/communitytesting or call 01243 642130. Parents and carers of school and college age children are being encouraged to start regular twice-weekly Covid testing from home. You do not need to have symptoms. Schools and colleges will be providing test kits for their pupils but will not be expected to provide them for families. Tests are now available to collect for adults in households with primary, secondary and college age children, includ-

At Whitehead-Ross Education & Consulting we are launching a new traineeship programme for young people aged 19-24 in Brighton. We have focused in on what young people need within the city: a supportive environment, an opportunity to develop skills and a chance to get into the workplace and build a professional network. Through this programme we engage with young people who are unsure of their options and help devise a plan to help them achieve their goals. Alongside tutorials we help trainees gain qualifications in Functional Skills Maths and English as well as an award in Employability Skills. Add on a work placement that puts all these developed skills to use, the programme should culminate in the trainee leaving us feeling ready to take on the next challenge, ready to face life post COVID, with increased self-worth and bolstered confidence. We have seen so many people pass through our doors in Brighton looking for the support and guidance to make the next move into work and this exciting traineeship programme gives us the ability to really focus on each individual, create a bespoke programme and help them find their feet in an incredibly chal-

lenging time within an ever-evolving work landscape. Young people are sometimes presented with lots of different options and that can feel overwhelming; with a traineeship they get individualised advice and guidance from dedicated staff. This is a route into work that puts the trainee in the driving seat with direct influence in where they go and how they get there.
