Copse management It’s been a great summer. For weeds, that is. Those of us who are lucky enough to have a garden have reported that weeding has been a significant chore over the past weeks, thanks to the heavy rainfall in May and June, the peak growing season. But if you want to see thistles over six feet tall and bramble branches as thick as pork sausages, you need to walk through Three Cornered Copse. Usually in July, the ground is baked as hard as concrete and the grass is starting to wear, but this year, there is mud in places and the vegetation is growing thick and fast. This means work for the gardeners, namely the Friends of Three Cornered Copse. But the way the council are working these parks is changing. There are currently eight

park rangers for the Cityparks department, and at least 25 Friends groups who work in, and care for, the green areas of the city. The Cityparks budget is being cut each year as central government funding reduces, which means that there is a greater reliance on volunteer groups in the city, to pick up some of the tasks that rangers would normally perform. Previously our work days would be led by a park ranger, but they are spread too thinly across each green space and have other duties added to their workload. With this in mind, two of our committee attended a training course to take over the leadership of work days. The course was called “Leadership For Conservation Volunteers”, and we spent a day at Stanmer Park with the rangers. We learned about risk assessment, emergency procedures (where would an air ambulance land in Three Cornered Copse?), and how to work with tools we would use to tackle the tasks our group need to perform. For example, using a mattock when wearing flip-flops is not a good thing to do... This allows us some autonomy in setting work days and operating in the copse without the presence of the ranger, but we still remain covered by the council’s insurance and guidance.

Hove Park Councillor News PARK LODGE (DYKE ROAD) Application for 5G equipment on the roof without leaseholders’ knowledge! 16 antennas and 7 ground-based cabinets. Please get in touch if you are able to lend your support. WEALD AVENUE Following public consultation, officers have recommended not to proceed at this stage with the proposals for Nevill Road (cycle lane) and Weald Avenue (access restrictions). This is an excellent result for our communities. ZONE P Changes have been agreed with residents and officers and will go to a consultation later this year. FRIENDS OF DYKE PARK A group of us met at BOAT on 6 July. If this is of interest, then do please get in touch. YOUNG ARTISTS The team behind the Sackville Trading Estate and your local councillors are excited to announce the launch of a new drawing competition for local primary school children in the Hove Park ward. Children from Cottesmore, the Bilingual Primary School and Aldrington will have the opportunity to create a piece of artwork inspired by Brighton beach huts. The winner will have their artwork printed and displayed on one of the hoardings surrounding our Sackville site. SACKVILLE TRADING ESTATE Work has now started on site. Midgard, on behalf of Moda Living, has started the enabling works to prepare the site for construction. This will involve clearing the existing vegetation, soft stripping of the existing buildings in preparation for demolition and installing hoardings to secure the site. Over the next eight weeks, specialist contractors will begin to demolish the existing buildings and prepare for the piling
activities to take place. A specialist rig will be used to limit any vibration and noise. In addition, they will use specialist dust and noise suppression equipment on site to minimise disruption to the local area. There will be an increase in traffic movements to and from site so if you are impacted in any way, please do get in touch. Midgard has worked with the council to develop a logistics plan that minimises disruption as much as possible and Cllr Brown and myself have worked to change the construction traffic routes to minimise disruption to Hove Park residents. As we move into the autumn, the piling works will continue as they construct the foundations for each of the buildings. Midgard is currently setting up a dedicated Sackville Road website. This will be a good place to get up-to-date information and for you to engage with the project. Councillor Professor Samer Bagaeen

Latest plans for Droveway dairy The council’s Planning Committee, meeting on 7th July, has approved amended plans for the former Dairy Crest depot in The Droveway. The latest plans propose a mixed-use development with 19 residential units and commercial space, and will involve the partial demolition of the existing northern wing and the erection of a new northern wing, as well as a new central wing. The site is a locally-listed heritage asset and has been the subject of two similar applications for developments of 14 homes, which both received planning permission (one on appeal). The council received 20 objections to the plans and one letter of support. Concerns included overlooking, traffic and parking issues, overdevelopment, unattractive design and loss of light to properties on Mallory Road. However, a council report to the Planning Committee said: “The proposal would ensure the retention of much of the fabric and character of a locally listed heritage asset and would secure an active use of the site for the future.” In the debate, Cllr Sue Shanks said she hoped the scheme would get built, but Cllr Alistair McNair commented: “This part of Hove is a lovely area to walk around. It’s leafy, spacious gardens…but what also makes it special is that each house there is quite different.” He was worried that the development was nothing like the character of the surrounding area. The Conservation Advisory Group was concerned about the proposed removal of pantiles which typify traditional cowsheds. Councillors voted 5-2 in favour of the development but added a condition that the pantiles on the roof should be retained.

We were forced to cancel our summer fair, scheduled for 17 July, because of the continuation of Covid restrictions. Those two extra days meant that we could only have held the fair if no more than 30 people attended - which rather defeated the object! Over the next couple of months we intend to host smaller events, so that a tremendous amount of organisation time and effort is not wasted should restrictions be re-imposed as they have been in the Netherlands, Israel and Australia, to name just three countries. We have a play for very young children with puppeteers coming in September, and we have confirmed a Sunday afternoon concert by the amazing Hangleton Brass Band. We hope other small concerts can be held, too. Meanwhile, in the park itself, we have another fabulous mural by our very own street artist, ‘Fek’, and our plans for planting more trees have moved up a gear with £10,000 of funding identified. We will let you know what stage this project reaches in a couple of months: regular readers will know that it has taken a long time to get this far! The rusty old football cage, some of you might have heard, is going to have some major work done to it in the next few months, and the wooden borders by the Snug café are due to be filled up with

soil in the not-too-distant-future, ready for planting in time for spring. Or so we hope. The Snug, itself, is now open as the Covid restrictions start to recede. If you want to have a coffee and a light meal in Stoneham Park, you should be well catered for. The bad news is that while ‘Fek’ paints with real talent and skill on the kick wall next to the ping-pong table, the table itself is covered with offensive graffiti. What mindless vandals we have in our midst! Those responsible should be ashamed. We will be holding a park tidy-up event on Saturday 14 August between 10.30 and 12.30. We will try to do a bit of gardening, pick up litter, shovel sand back into the sandpit, and repair some damaged property. If you can, please bring a pair of gloves and some hardy shoes and meet us by the flagpole. Speaking of flags and flagpoles, didn’t England do well in the Euros? Bring on the World Cup next year! Mayor to reopen church hall Saint Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Portland Road have been refurbishing their church hall to fix some structural problems and to make it more attractive and a better space. They hope it will be a useful resource for the local community. Father Alexander in the church hall
The hall will be reopened by the Mayor, Cllr Alan Robins, on 21st August. Parish priest Father Alexander Lucie-Smith told us more… What issues did you have with the hall? It’s a very big church, which was built very quickly in 1915. It was built with the “pennies of the poor” – all the parishioners would have contributed. It has a fantastic bell tower but no bells! The issues were partly aesthetic and partly structural. It was very dingy, there was water coming in and the kitchen and bathrooms had come to the end of their lives. The old kitchen was awful, and the lighting and heating were both hideous and expensive. The day-to-day maintenance costs of a hall are staggering.
raising funds through cake sales, coffee mornings, concerts and raffles, and we’ve received donations. It’s a community-building exercise. The refurbishments are costing roughly £150,000. What improvements are you making? We are putting in a new kitchen and toilets, as well as new lighting, heating and windows, to let in more natural light, with the revelation of the original woodwork. It will also be replastered and painted. We’re hoping it will become a community hub. How much will it cost to hire it? The fee will be £25 per hour. Is your church now fully open again following the lockdown?
How have you raised the funds?
Yes, it’s been completely open since December, but the congregation is building up again gradually.
The previous parish priest, Father Jerry O’Brien, left us a very healthy bank balance and the diocese gave us permission to dip into it, but we’ve also been

19 Meet a local resident who runs a fitness studio…
Gary Vaughan lives in Poets Corner and last year opened HITZone Hove fitness studio. How long have you been a fitness coach? I’ve been working in fitness for five years now; I qualified as a personal trainer and Pilates instructor whilst living in the States. Exercise has always been a big feature of my life, in some way or form. I’ve trekked to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, scuba dived in many countries and ran several half marathons back in my former home of Melbourne, Australia. Why did you decide to open HITZone? HITZone is a franchise and at the core of who we are is community, and making a real difference in people’s lives through creating aliveness, vitality and wellbeing. My previous career was in clinical psychiatry for 15 years, where my passion for change and making a difference positively impacted the lives of many whom I worked alongside. The values and focus of HITZone aligned perfectly with my personal values around community, supporting change and connection. As such I relocated myself and my family from Dallas, Texas, USA to Hove and HITZone Hove was born in January 2020. What is different about HITZone? HITZone isn’t a “gym”. It’s a community for everyone who wants maximum results in minimal time. Whether the aim is to lose weight, be healthier, increase fitness levels or performance, our unique small group approach will help all. We have no mirrors at the studio, no egos and no attitudes! We have a fantastic community of like-minded members who have now found a love for exercise and have a lot of fun whilst doing so. Yes, it really is possible to have fun whilst exercising.
Do you get involved with any community events? Absolutely we do, after all community is at the heart of HITZone. This year we’re confirmed as hosting a stall at LagoonFest and late September we’ll be opening our doors to the general public as part of Brighton & Hove City Council’s TAKEPART 2021 community event. What do you do to relax? Walking in The Downs, weekends away, and enjoying a good wine in my inner Poets Corner secluded garden. HITZone Hove is at Unit 23, Hove Enterprise Centre, Basin Road North, BN41 1UY (in Shoreham Port, just off Kingsway). For more information, check out “HITZone Hove” on Facebook or visit www.hitzoneglobal.com.

21 Robert Nemeth, Conservative councillor for Wish ward, on plans for lighting Hove Beacon…
Wish Ward Councillor News It is with great pleasure that Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I can announce that Hove Beacon is now on course to be lit in time for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in June next year after our proposals were accepted at Full Council.
WEST HOVE
The proposals have two elements. The first is lighting the city’s beacons for the Jubilee (at Hove and at two locations in Brighton). The second is installing an LED scheme at Hove Beacon that is turned on for the Jubilee and kept in place thereafter. I credit a former Mayor of Hove, Mrs Audrey Buttimer, for highlighting its significance. The replica beacon, which is situated on the promenade adjacent to Hove Lagoon, was lit by Audrey’s husband in 1988 to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Spanish Armada. Our discussions gave the idea of reviving it as something to light, with fire. But it was local lighting designer Eleni Shiarlis who gave Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and me inspiration to modify our approach to light instead with a colourful environmentally-friendly, light-pollution-compliant, LED scheme that is low-maintenance and cost-efficient. Eleni mocked up such a scheme in 2018 and it looked fantastic, so we have been working with council officers on engineering solutions ever since. It will be beautiful, and can realistically be done, especially after unanimous backing during Budget Council negotiations which provides funding to do the job properly. The Government is encouraging local authorities to light their beacons on 2nd June 2022 to mark the Platinum Jubilee in continuance of the country’s long tradition of celebrating royal jubilees, weddings and coronations. Hove Beacon and the city at large should of course be made ready for this event.
We need to get it right this time as past years have seen the Mayor of Brighton & Hove having to travel to other local authority areas to get involved in lighting events. This is simply embarrassing. I am fully won over to the idea that much pleasure would derive from regularly lighting the Hove Beacon, which is an under-recognised public monument with fascinating historical connotations. Residents, tourists and visitors alike will love it! Getting the Hove Beacon lit will be the latest instalment of our long-running campaign to improve Hove seafront which includes constantly championing the Lagoon; highlighting crime and anti-social behaviour generally; pushing for greater sea safety; and calling on the Council to paint railings and remove graffiti. Cllr Robert Nemeth robert.nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk

25 A new local club…
Welcome to Laguna Girls Run Club
WEST HOVE
Laguna Girls Run Club is a running club for teenage girls. The idea developed during the first lockdown, when my 13-year-old daughter and I found a different way to start the day together.
Rather than the usual morning rush to school – we were now getting up early and putting on our trainers. Smaller runs became longer runs and before I knew it, she was getting herself out of bed early and telling me that it was time to go! The runs together were special as this was the time we connected and talked about anything and everything; from periods and boys to mental health and childhood memories! Before I knew it she had completed her first ever 10km run, which gave her confidence and self-belief. As the lockdown restrictions eased, we invited one of her friends along, and we were soon talking about how awesome it would be to start a running club for girls, and so Laguna Girls Run Club was born! The idea behind this run club is to encourage teenage girls to stay active, which is crucial for positive mental and physical health, especially now as the pandemic has led to a rise in stress and anxiety amongst young people. Research conducted by ‘Women in Sport’ found that nearly 60% of girls in the UK aren’t meeting the recommended exercise guidelines and that by the age of 14, a high percentage of girls drop out of sport for a variety
of reasons (body image, lack of choice in PE, confidence etc). Laguna Girls Run Club provides a safe space for the girls to connect with one another, learn about the six ways to wellbeing (Being Active, Connecting, Noticing, Learning, Giving and Caring for our Planet) and to take part in running activities that are both fun and challenging. We are being hosted by the wonderful Lagoon Watersports every week. We will be running drop-in sessions over the summer holidays and you can come and say hello to us at Lagoon Fest on the 4th September. Our autumn term starts on Saturday 18th September. You are welcome to join us for a trial session and we also offer concessions as we believe in giving everyone the opportunity to be part of this special club. 27 Community composting and a colourful bench come to Wish Park…
News from the Friends of Wish Park
Matthew said, “Having moved 16 months ago from Goldstone to Wish ward I wanted to improve our environment and community. Finding the FOWP whose objectives are to improve Wish Park, encourage goodwill, foster community spirit and raise environmental awareness has been a real joy. The friends are a great bunch and encouraged the idea to bring composting to Wish Park. We are reducing CO2 emissions and food waste, making new connections and building a stronger community through the scheme.” Things continue to move apace in the park with the ‘Second Mural’, which at 14 metres long is a substantial work of art. The new mural depicts a wide range of park users and dogs on a summer’s day – taking time to relax, chat, work out or make new friends and acquaintances. The design and colour palette are the work of Becca Angel who led on last year’s mural design. David Wicken who is managing the project and fundraising appeal praised the generosity of local people who have donated over £3,500 to make it happen and of the local businesses who have sponsored various aspects of the project.

Look out for social media announcements.” Wish Park is a place for every generation, and it is much loved and used. The Friends are currently working towards improving the park environment and amenities for residents and park users. Working closely with council officers they are confident that the playground revamp will be in the next scheduled programme later this year. They have also applied for funding for a new outdoor gym. Relaunching the gardening group and holding community events are also forthcoming priorities.

31 Meet artist Hannah Thompson
Local artist goes to pieces Artist Hannah Thompson lives in central Hove. She has recently created a dual-image jigsaw puzzle, designed for sharing. What is your background? I trained in scenery painting, working in London’s West End, and later opened my business ‘Chalkline Studios’ in NYC. I moved back to England determined to become a better painter rather than just paint for a living and grew much more interested in people, with their busy active lives. I’m interested in ‘the time inbetween’ all that activity; sketching is my visual eavesdrop. Why did you decide to design a jigsaw? Lockdown ignited my interest in jigsaws, as it did for many I think. After suffering horribly with Covid at Christmas I turned to puzzling and became quite reflective about the benefits of this low-energy activity. I then decided to join up two passions, painting and puzzles. In recent times there’s been a lot of distance and solitude, so I wanted to target creating something to do together. ‘Share a Bench with Me’ is a new simple jigsaw design idea, one puzzle using two paintings, one image facing one puzzler, one image facing another. Here’s hoping no more getting neckache working upside down somewhere in the sky!
of many designs and is currently stocked at City Books. ‘Share a Summers Day with Me’ is in production. We hear you run community art classes… Like many freelance workers a lot of my work vanished in the first lockdown. Sadly both the community centres, Somerset Centre and The Hop 50+, where I ran art sessions and conversation groups, both needed to suspend activities. I especially wanted to make this puzzle into XL pieces (dementia friendly) as well as 1,000 pieces. What are your other interests besides art?
I love the seaside and city living, there’s lots of people and real ale! My green space, though, makes me tick. It’s called ‘Branch Out’. I’ve planted hundreds of willow trees which I coppice and use to make, and then sell, wreaths and planters at local markets. First concept thoughts were for it to be a tool May find a jigsaw on the table too, now! for carers to use, encouraging conversation For more information visit and interaction or even to be competitive. www.artistatlarge.co.uk or Jigsaws are good for wellbeing, memory email hannah@artistatlarge.co.uk and cognitive skills. Hove’s first postwomen... Looking happy, although a little bemused, four young ladies pose for the camera. It’s a special occasion. They are wearing the uniform and badges and carrying the bags of the General Post Office.
They’re even holding letters ready to deliver! We may be looking at the first postwomen of Hove. We know virtually nothing about this specific image (ref AMS/7312/13/38) apart from the fact that it was probably taken during the First World War in the photo-
graphic studio at 33 George Street run by the brothers Thomas and George Wiles. Although women had been employed by the Post Office before 1914, the war saw a drive to recruit thousands more female workers to replace the male employees who had been called up.

Many photographs in the collection are of individuals or small groups, such as our postwomen. They were taken in the photographic studio at the back of the shop where customers could choose from a variety of backdrops including potted plants, scenic views and classical pillars. The background to our sitters looks a little ad hoc. Perhaps it was taken on the spur of the moment just as they were about to head out on their first delivery?

A distinct group of photographs was taken between 1915 and 1919. This was a time when thousands of shell-shocked or wounded soldiers were making their recovery in various makeshift hospitals in Brighton and Hove. George Wiles’ photographs show them playing games in their hospital wards, recuperating in local parks and being treated to days out by wealthy business owners. These are moving images of individuals making enormous efforts to rehabilitate themselves, both mentally and physically. If you are interested in viewing digitised images from the Thomas Wiles collection (AMS/7312) you can book a seat in the Reading Room through our website, www.thekeep.info. GENERAL
This image started life as a thin glass plate negative, one of hundreds which had been sitting in a dusty shoebox for many years. At the end of 2018 archivists at The Keep received these negatives, and, several weeks later, staff and volunteers working in the reprographic department revealed hundreds of crystal-clear images. There were family groups, children dancing, buildings, streets, animals – even a pair of old leather boots! The pictures covered the period from 1912 to the 1930s and give us Hove in all its glory. The earliest image, taken on 2 September 1912, is of Jimmy Smith having just scored a goal for Brighton and Hove Albion vs Portsmouth at the Goldstone Ground in Hove (now the Goldstone Retail Park).

36 A great project by the Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals…
Small Acts of Friendship In June, local resident John Austin, who will be 77 this month, overcame his fear of heights and joined 35 fundraisers (including his daughter and granddaughter) to raise money for the Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals by abseiling from the 150-metre high i360. John, who lives in Berriedale Avenue, is a Trustee of the Friends and is fundraising for their Small Acts of Friendship project providing extra support to staff and patients on the elderly care wards. Small Acts of Friendship is a project launched by Friends of Brighton & Hove Hospitals in October 2017 in partnership with the Elderly Care team at the Royal Sussex County Hospital. It is a programme providing personal services and activities, ranging from hairdressing to music, art and poetry groups, which help patients retain a sense of dignity, social activity and well-being in hospital. It has benefited over 4,000 patients and was identified as an example of outstanding practice by the Care Quality Commission. Last year Small Acts of Friendship expanded to provide support during bereavement and plans are in progress to fund two Friends Rooms where patients can end their lives peacefully and provide Friendship bags to give relatives the information and help they need. With more funds, Small Acts of Friendship will be extended to the respiratory care wards and to Mill View Hospital, supporting physical fitness and hobbies to help mental health recovery. John says: “We are planning more fundraising events including another i360 abseil and a Sea Swim Challenge and possibly a “sky-walk” which will involve scaling London’s largest football stadium the home of Tottenham Hotspur. My fundraising page remains open for donations
until the end of August at https://www. justgiving.com/fundraising/john-austin16 We also have a partnering programme enabling local organisations to work with us to actively support our local NHS in collaboration with their customers and employees.” Details of the Friends’ activities can be found at brightonhospitalfriends.org.uk. Top 5 mistakes people with gut problems make Whether you suffer from occasional bloat or full-blown IBS or IBDs, these are the most common mistakes I encounter in my practice:
2. Shovel food down. We’ve all done it: eating in front of a computer, answering emails, texting etc. We forget to chew, speed up and realise at the end of our meal that we’ve eaten on automatic pilot. By not chewing your food enough, you miss the first stage of the digestive process which involves mixing your food with enzymes found in your saliva. 45 News from BNJC on their new development in New Church Road…
A vibrant community hub for Hove BNJC (Brighton & Hove Jewish Community) are building a vibrant community space in central Hove and hope to welcome people of all faiths and every background when they open their doors in 2022. Their core mission is to breathe fresh life into the local Jewish community, honouring 250 years of Jewish history in the city, and to build world-class facilities and host a programme of cultural events for everyone in Brighton & Hove to enjoy. When BNJC opens next year, Hovarians will be able to sample fresh produce at their Jewish-style bakery, contemporary café and bistro restaurant, which will serve a fusion of Middle Eastern and Eastern European cuisine that will add to the rich tapestry of dining options in the city. Co-working facilities will also be available for small businesses and freelancers, as well as professional development workshops. Based at 29-31 New Church Road, next door to St Christopher’s Prep School, BNJC plans to host a wide range of after-school clubs, plus life-long learning courses for adults. BNJC is on schedule to open its doors in late Spring of 2022. Although Covid-19 presented a challenge, the team have continued to work hard to keep plans on track where possible. BNJC recently celebrated reaching the highest point in their build with a Topping Out ceremony. Amongst those in attendance was Labour MP for Hove Peter Kyle, as well as community leaders from across the city. Peter Kyle praised the significance of building a Jewish community hub in Hove, commenting that: “In an era where lots of people are talking about the Jewish community, most will only see Jewish life from
How the central courtyard will look
the outside. Not many have the chance to see it from within. What excites me most is that this will be a facility for everyone to walk in and experience Jewish life, interact with Jewish culture, Jewish food and feel a part of it. We’re so proud that this has been created in our community.” This forward-thinking development aims to provide the opportunity for everyone to have a place to connect to Jewish culture and enjoy outstanding amenities. BNJC’s CEO Marc Sugarman commented: “We’re so excited to open our doors in 2022 and hope that BNJC becomes a home from home – a place to meet friends, have a coffee, a bite to eat, enjoy a fascinating talk, take a class or just hang out.” E: info@bnjc.co.uk W: www.bnjc.co.uk T: 07929 402082 Follow BNJC on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram @BNJCBrighton

47 The CCTV will help prevent littering at these two hotspots and also allow the environmental enforcement team to hand out fines to those who don’t bin their rubbish properly or take it home.
Extremely difficult to catch people who litter The council’s enforcement officers already patrol Hove Lawns and the whole seafront on foot; however it’s extremely difficult to catch people leaving their rubbish behind. If these people see an officer approaching they simply wait until the officer leaves. The new cameras will allow the officers to be quickly directed to those seen dumping their litter as the cameras will be monitored from the council’s CCTV control room. The cameras are being placed on street lighting columns to monitor the lawns and the central beach and will not face or monitor anything else including housing, hotels, shops, bars or cafés.

LIFE OF LIBRA
‘Fines can be as high as £2,500’ Council leader Phélim Mac Cafferty, whose Brunswick & Adelaide ward covers the lawns, said: “We’re having to install these cameras due to the amount of rubbish people are leaving on Hove Lawns and the central seafront area. Our Streets Team collected 100 tonnes of rubbish from the seafront in just 17 days recently, and much of it was from these two areas. The cameras will help act as deterrents so people bin their rubbish responsibly or take it home. If they don’t then these cameras give us a far greater chance of catching people and fining them, which can be as high as £2,500. Everyone knows not to leave litter behind and that it’s a criminal offence, so we must use whatever means necessary to stop these thoughtless people who don’t care what state they leave our beautiful beach and lawns in.”

Refurb for public toilets
Sir Peter Field made a Freeman of the City
A total of £2.7 million will be spent upgrading 11 of the busiest public toilets in the city, the council has agreed.
Brighton & Hove City Council have made Sir Peter Field an Honorary Freeman of the City of Brighton & Hove.
At the same time, the council has also agreed to end its contract with toilet company Healthmatic and begin running the service ‘inhouse’. The current contract will end on 31 January when the 36 loos will be directly maintained by the council. The current Healthmatic staff will then be employed by the council. The move comes after the council decided it wanted more control over the cleaning, maintenance and refurbishment of the toilets. The toilets earmarked for an upgrade are: Goldstone Villas, Hove Lagoon, King’s Esplanade, Lower Promenade East of Brighton Pier, Peter Pan, Royal Pavilion Gardens, Station Road, St Ann’s Well Gardens, The Colonnade, The Level and Western Esplanade.
GENERAL
The investment will see loos in the highest footfall areas, including the seafront, being refurbished over the next three years.
Sir Peter has served as Lord Lieutenant of East Sussex for 13 years. He has also served as a magistrate for over 20 years and chaired the Brighton and Hove Business Community Partnership. Having lived in Brighton and served the city throughout his career, he has been recognised for his distinguished service. Award for those who helped during Covid pandemic All those who helped during the Covid-19 pandemic have also been made Freepersons of the City. A framed scroll was presented at a special council meeting on 15 July. A council report said: “A number of individuals from the public, business and voluntary sector have contributed to the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and shown inspirational, selfless devotion in supporting the city during what has been one of the most challenging periods in its history. It is impossible to list the names of all those who contributed to the effort.” The council has also launched a year-long Covid Recognition Scheme. People will be encouraged to nominate those they think helped during the pandemic, through the council’s website.

51 Meet the man in charge of Brighton & Hove’s museums…
Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust CEO Hedley Swain Hedley Swain was appointed six months ago as the first Chief Executive Officer of the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust, when the organisation left Brighton & Hove City Council to become a charitable trust. What is your background?
GENERAL
I trained as an archaeologist and worked at the Museum of London for many years. Most recently I have been Arts Council England’s director for South East England and worked closely with all the arts organisations in the city – I knew it would be a great place to work. What has it been like beginning your new role in the middle of a pandemic? Really hard work! The first few months with museums closed and the lockdown in place it was particularly tough, I would come into the Royal Pavilion and just have the security staff to talk to. Not getting time to meet all the other staff properly was the hardest bit. It also means we will have a tough financial period with far fewer visitors for a while – that does mean it’s a good time to visit if you can. What are your plans for the future of the Trust? We want to be one of the best museum services in Britain, bringing benefits to the people of Brighton & Hove and welcoming visitors from all over the world. We have great buildings, collections and staff, we now need the opportunity to get the best from all of them. And of course, the Royal Pavilion is unique but we do need to remind Brighton & Hove people to visit – I think many local people take it for granted. Are there any new exhibitions coming up? We have the Bowie photographic exhibition at Brighton Museum as well as
objects on loan from Buckingham Palace at the Royal Pavilion. We have a new exhibition by master ceramicist Richard Slee at Hove Museum at the moment. How can local people support you and get involved? Come and spend your money here. Visit, become a member, donate. We need as much support as possible. But also tell us about your experiences at our sites, it will help us make the service even better. Brighton & Hove residents can enjoy half-price admission to the Royal Pavilion and Preston Manor and free admission to Brighton Museum & Art Gallery. They can also bring up to four children (under 18) free of charge. Website: brightonmuseums.org.uk

53 Hove news…
Vallance Hall plans approved Brighton & Hove City Council have approved an application to demolish part of Vallance Hall in Hove Street and to build a new four-storey office building.
The proposal is to partially demolish the existing courtyard buildings at the rear of the site and replace them with a four-storey office block. There will also be car parking in the basement. Nine objections were received when the plans were first submitted in 2019 and a further 11 objections were received after the plans were substantially amended. Concerns from neighbours included overlooking, loss of light, overshadowing, and noise and pollution from the underground car park. A bungalow to the east of the site in Vallance Road will lose light as a result of the development and Regent House, an office building to the south, will also lose light and sunlight to its north-facing windows. However, a council report to the Planning Committee considered that this loss of light, while regrettable, would not be significant enough to warrant refusal of the application. The report said: “The development is considered to be of a suitable scale, massing and design for the site which makes effective use of the land to provide much needed employment space for the city and is considered to represent a high quality design.” Ian Coomber, a planning consultant representing FuturLab, a tech firm who have an office in Regent House, asked the committee to reject the scheme. He said that his clients’ office is single-aspect. It currently has north-facing views over Vallance Hall
View of the proposed development from Vallance Road
and his clients will be faced with a brick wall above the height of their windows. Neighbour Teresa Sutherland told the committee: “I think the proposed development will have a severe impact on my property and enjoyment of daily life in terms of loss of daylight and overshadowing, as it is unacceptably close and directly overlooking habitable rooms.” Peter Young, a planning consultant representing the developers, said that there had been four design alterations since the scheme was initially submitted. It had been notably lowered and set back from Vallance Road. Members of the Planning Committee voted unanimously to approve the plans.

55 City news…
Council looks into food waste collection The Government has been consulting with local authorities on proposals that they all collect a core set of recycling materials, including food waste, to help drive up recycling rates. If the Government’s proposed changes are adopted, it will be mandatory for local authorities to introduce weekly food waste collections. (This is likely to happen from October 2023.) Under the proposals, councils will also have to collect plastic pots, tubs and trays; aluminium foil, food trays and tubes; and food and drink cartons. In addition, plastic film, eg bread bags, will have to be collected by the end of the 2026/27 financial year. An analysis of the city’s waste in 2020 showed that 37% of the contents of kerbside rubbish bins consisted of food and drink waste. Around 60% of this food waste was deemed avoidable and 53% was packaged. Cityclean have been looking into different waste collection options. For kerbside collections, the option recommended in the report would provide: • Fortnightly residual rubbish collections (a change from weekly) • Fortnightly recycling collections (as per current arrangements) • Weekly food waste (new collection service) • Fortnightly charged garden waste (as per current arrangements) For communal areas, collection arrangements would remain as they are, with the inclusion of a food waste service.
GENERAL
A report to the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability (ETS) Committee on 22nd June gave an update on the future introduction of a food waste collection service.
The cost of introducing kerbside food waste collection could be offset by the changes to the frequency of rubbish collections. Cllr Robert Nemeth, speaking for the Conservative group, was concerned about moving to fortnightly rubbish collections, as this could lead to piles of waste on residents’ doorsteps for long periods, especially if collections were missed. He preferred the option of continuing with weekly rubbish collections, in addition to providing a food waste service. Labour councillor Gary Wilkinson said that one of the most recurrent issues in his mailbag is missed bin collections, so he proposed an amendment to explore both options – to retain weekly rubbish collections or to reduce them to fortnightly. Both options would include the weekly food waste service. This was agreed by the committee. A feasibility study and business case will now be completed. There will be consultation with residents, trade unions and staff, and a further report will be brought back to a future committee for decision.

61 There are plenty of family shows at the BOAT this month…
August at the Brighton Open Air Theatre August brings plenty of family-friendly productions to the BOAT, including Brighton Little Theatre’s production of Roald Dahl’s The Twits (11-14 August).
For slightly older children, there are productions of Treasure Island (18 August) and The Secret Garden (29 August). The Shakespeare line-up this month includes As You Like It (21 August), Macbeth (22 August) and The Tempest (28 August). She Stoops to Conquer is a romantic romp by Oliver Goldsmith, first performed in 1773. It’s filled with ludicrous misunderstanding, mischief and mayhem in a production by Rain or Shine Theatre (Sunday 1 August). Oscar Wilde’s classic play of manners, The Importance of Being Earnest, will be performed by two dashing entertainers from outdoor theatre company Slapstick Picnic (Friday 6 August). Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre is brought to life in a powerful staging by DOT productions (26 August). There’s a dynamic new adaptation of Sophocles’ Ancient Greek play Antigone, set in the future. It infuses Ancient Greek theatrical techniques with live music and singing throughout, audience interaction and a comedic Greek chorus commentating on the action (19 August).
GENERAL
There’s a “delightfully daft” retelling of Beauty and the Beast by IKP Theatre (2-3 August); and Folksy Theatre present Little Red and the Big Bad Wolf with live music, puppetry and audience interaction (Sunday 8 August). Immersion Theatre are bringing a funny and exciting musical version of The Jungle Book, with the chance to meet the characters after the show (Wednesday 4 August); and there’s an enchanting adaptation of The Tale of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny by Quantum Theatre (Sunday 15 August). There’s a musical version of The Jungle Book on 4th August
A Moment is a look into the complex emotions of two characters living through the AIDS crisis in the 1980s, by contemporary dance duet Thomas Page Dances. They dance through intimate human connections into explosions of physicality, with their unique style of gesture, contortion and grounded visceral movement, and an intricate score by composer Robert Singer (5 August). Drag in the Park has already sold out, but at the time of writing there are still tickets available for Sing-A-Long-A-Drag Queen, a family-friendly Pride event with Brighton’s bubbliest drag queen, Misney (7 August). 63 A new portrait of Brighton by Orlando Gough…
Brighton book…Coming and Going Orlando Gough grew up in a flat inside Brighton College, where his father was a House Master. He is now a composer of operas and choral music and has just published a portrait and memoir of Brighton, where he still lives, called “Coming & Going”.
It was a classic lockdown project. Here I was, spending my entire time in Brighton, looking around and thinking, this is a very interesting place. And this is a place that has been a formative influence on my life. Tell us more about “Coming & Going”… It’s part memoir, part psychogeography (whatever that may be), part history, occasionally fiction. George the Fourth, Dusty Springfield, seagulls, Edward Carpenter and my brother Jamie, Le Gateau Chocolat, Biba, bungaroosh, Haile Selassie and Max Miller, flint penises, Wartz, Elizabeth Robins, Fatboy Slim, Gandhi, Ranji, Caroline Lucas, vegan fish and chips…. Essentially it’s a sequence of stories; but at the same time it’s fascinated by the relationship of past and present, of fact and fiction, of the urban landscape and the natural world. What was it like growing up inside a school? Weird, but not horrible; there was a ready-made community, and amazing facilities: swimming pool, tennis courts, roofs to climb on. The balcony of our flat was directly above the school kitchen. I learnt, from my brother Jamie, about guerrilla cookery, poking snails and earth and weeds through the air conditioning vents into the custard. I learnt how to climb trees, how to reflect

sunlight into my father’s classroom, how to ride a bike with no brakes, how to provoke the Head Master. What part of the city are you living in now? Just off the Western Road, in a street full of beautiful houses and interesting, frisky neighbours. It’s also a street for hen parties, a street for drug deals, a street for vulnerable people. It’s a full-on urban street. What are your favourite parts of Brighton? The area just south of Seven Dials with its beautiful houses, its view to the sea, the atmospheric St Nicholas Rest Garden…..the North Laine with its quirky shops, its sophisticated graffiti….the Undercliff walk from the Marina to Saltdean, between astonishing chalk cliffs and the sea……Southwick Beach, where industry meets the sea, with its beautiful eroded wooden groynes. “Coming and Going” by Orlando Gough is published by Uniformbooks (uniformbooks. co.uk) and is available from Magazine Brighton, City Books, The Kemptown Bookshop and Waterstones.

65 An event to raise money for Alzheimer’s Society on 18 September…
Brighton Memory Walk 2021 Brighton and Hove residents are being invited to don their walking gear, lace up their boots, and unite against dementia by signing up to Alzheimer’s Society’s Brighton Memory Walk this autumn.
Over a year since the pandemic began, people with dementia are still bearing the brunt of coronavirus and demand for Alzheimer’s Society’s services is still increasing. Memory Walk will bring together people who have been personally affected by dementia, those who want to walk to remember a loved one, and people looking for a fun-filled activity to raise money for charity at 20 locations across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Supporters can also opt to walk on their own, or with loved ones, on the paths, pavements, parks or pebbles in a location of their choosing throughout September.
GENERAL
Hundreds of Alzheimer’s Society supporters from across Brighton and Hove will put their best foot forward at Hove Lawns on 18 September 2021 alongside family, friends and colleagues to raise money for the charity.
By marching out in support of Alzheimer’s Society, walkers will raise crucial funds to help the charity reach more people through its vital services, like the Dementia Connect support line, which have been used more than five million times since March 2020. Sign up for free at alzheimers.org.uk/ memorywalk.

66 A great local business…
Connected Brighton My name is Lyndsey, I’m Brighton born and bred and a Preston Park girl. I love trying new things, meeting new people, sharing stories, eating out, travel, drinks with friends, time with family and all things fitness (mainly to balance out my love of wine and chips!) And Connected Brighton is my baby. Whether you are single or in a couple, just moved to the area or been here forever, if you want to meet new people and try new things then Connected Brighton is for you. We host events across the city designed to help you make new friends and try new things such as Paddle Boarding, Kayaking, Petanque, Mezcal Tasting, Cocktail Making, Escape Rooms, Games Nights, Drinks, Dinners, Lunches and Brunches! I started the business in response to lockdown and the number of life changing break ups, make ups, job losses, job changes and moves to the coast. I had my own break up and got made redundant, and for a moment wasn’t sure what life post lockdown was going to look like. But I knew I wanted to make the most of it. Feeling inspired to bring like minded people together I saw an opportunity to offer something different that would connect people looking to be part of a supportive community, but that would also support our brilliant local businesses. Helping put cash back in tills and smiles back on faces after a tough year. And so here we are! Several brilliant events later, working with Visit Brighton and fantastic partners we are building a community of fun people who want to do fun things. New events are coming up with great local businesses offering bespoke experiences that showcase what Brighton & Hove has to offer. We are still keeping Covid safe with small groups and being outside where possible.
We can also help with private parties or team building events, get in touch to discuss. Subscribe to my weekly newsletter for recommendations or follow my Instagram for daily tips and promotions. Opening up the North Laine Gateway
A drawing of the proposed regenerated arches
A current view of the arches
One of the first things visitors to Brighton see is a gloomy underpass daubed with graffiti and strewn with old posters and stickers. It’s funny to think that this underpass houses one of Brighton and Hove’s most individual visitor attractions: Brighton Toy and Model Museum.
additional 10% from the Toy Museum, we are already at the halfway mark and are now looking for additional partners to help with match-funding. North Laine is a vibrant area known for its many quality independent traders, but is often overlooked as visitors head straight from the station to the sea. If you are able to contribute to this fantastic scheme, please contact Brighton Toy and Model Museum (info@brightontoymuseum.co.uk).
Brighton Toy and Model Museum, working alongside Benedict O’Looney Architects and the Railway Heritage Trust, have submitted a planning application to replace the modern brickwork which fills the Victorian arches with glazing to regenerate the area by bringing light and life to the underpass, making Trafalgar Street the “Gateway to the North Laine”. Brighton and Hove Tourism Alliance and Network Rail are also involved in regeneration proposals, with plans of their own to improve the space beneath Brighton railway station’s entrance. Their contribution to the project includes a plan for the removal of the tattered posters and graffiti at the top of Trafalgar Street, replacing it with an attractive new mural instead. The Railway Heritage Trust has pledged 40% of the structural costs, and with an
Jan Etches, Brighton Toy and Model Museum’s General Manager, said: “We are keen to use this opportunity to regenerate our end of Trafalgar Street so that visitors to Brighton get a much improved first impression of the city and also draw their attention to Trafalgar Street and the other wonderful North Laine independent traders. We hope that everyone gets as excited about this project to improve our community as we are!” Brighton Toy and Model Museum is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It was established in 1991 by Chris Littledale to share his love of toys and models, and houses one of the finest collections in the world.

Returning by popular demand will be the famous Globe of Death with its team of motorcyclists performing high velocity stunts; plus amazingly ‘elastic’ tumblers from Kenya; nail-biting knife-throwing from the Czech Republic; hand-balancing from the Garcia family featuring their talented teenage sons; and high-adrenaline skills via an astonishing Wheel of Death.
Martin Burton, Founder and Director of Zippos Circus, commented: “I cannot tell you how pleased we are to be back on the road again. We have worked tirelessly with the government and public health authorities to get the show back on tour in line with official regulations and guidance and are now confident that we can do so in a Covid-secure manner. The outdoor nature of the circus and well-ventilated Big Top plus socially distanced seating and a range of new hygiene and safety measures will all help ensure that Zippos Circus will be a safe place for both our performers and families to enjoy and we look forward to welcoming everybody to our new show.” There are shows at 3pm and 7pm from Monday to Saturday and on Sundays at 12pm and 4pm. Tickets cost from £13 and are available from zippos.seetickets.com.

77 Some lovely local floral displays…
Pavement gardening Since Brighton & Hove City Council resolved to discontinue the use of pesticides on public land, council workers have struggled to keep the city’s pavements clear of weeds. Some Hove residents have been planting flowers around the bases of the street trees for many years, but these little gardens seem to have proliferated recently, with green-fingered residents replacing the weeds with some lovely floral displays. Here are just a few that we’ve spotted around Hove – thank you to everyone who has taken the trouble to do this. Brittany Road GENERAL
