7 News from Conservative councillors for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen and Vanessa Brown…

HOVE PARK SCHOOL Look out for the November recording of the ‘Digital Surgery’ facilitated by Ian Pope from the Politics Project with students at Hove Park School. ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING POINTS We have secured an in-depth discussion of this matter at the next Carbon Neutral Member Working Group on which Cllr Bagaeen sits. TOADS HOLE VALLEY With discussions between the developer, the council & National Highways abruptly ending, the council has updated the planning register with several technical documents from the developer. We have asked the developer to organise a community update as a matter of urgency and have asked for a summary document that outlines and explains the changes between the current submission and the last one, noting how longstanding differences have been addressed. ALDI We have objected to the application at Court Farm on King George VI Avenue, expressing concern about the traffic modelling and the abrupt drop in engagement on the developer side. SACKVILLE ROAD With excavations and piling progressing, please get in touch if you are experiencing problems relating to nuisance, traffic and noise from the project. CIL and s106 DEVELOPER CONTRIBUTIONS FOR HOVE PARK We have been working very closely with developers and they are very determined to see that money is put into Hove Park Ward. We are aware of attempts by neighbouring wards to dip into these contributions from developments in Hove Park. We are particularly concerned that

neighbouring wards are benefitting from different streams of council funding for highways improvements eg pedestrian crossings while Hove Park is not down as a priority for these, both to our dismay and to that of residents who have been fighting hard for these. We continue to push for safer crossings on Goldstone Crescent, Shirley Drive and the Droveway but have secured a win for the Old Shoreham Road/Lullington Avenue area. HOVE TIP We have been supporting residents who have expressed concern that complaints and weekly reports of nuisance were not resulting in the halt of the activities causing concern - noise, flies and smell. We have organised a visit of the tip in recent weeks for local residents and have a better understanding of processes and procedures to protect residents’ amenity. Veolia, who manage the site, have changed their operations to move noisier activities to later in the first hour to between 7:30 and 8:00 instead of 7:00 to 7:30. They have reduced the number of days they are servicing the site and operating before 8am. They are also installing a 3-metre-high acoustic fence which should reduce noise for neighbours. 9 News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse…

Fall in the Copse As usual, the wintry nights and dark evenings have suddenly crept up on us and the daylight hours are squeezed as we move into mid December.

The birds and squirrels are busy attending to the abundant autumn fruits; this year there are hundreds of (grey) squirrels in the woods, proving great entertainment for the dogs who are walking there. Some interesting bird species are found here. One of our members spotted an albino blackbird recently. (It is just like a normal blackbird, but with a mottled white head, but still quite rare.) We have probably completed our work days for 2021, after the stuttering start through lockdown in the early part of the year. In late November we tidied and cleared paths, picked up litter, and took down some of the precarious branches that were waiting to fall. Thankfully, fly tipping has only occasionally been a relatively infrequent problem in Three Cornered Copse, but ever since houses have been built along its boundaries, rubble, bricks and non-native garden waste has found its way into the woods. Because of its slightly wild appearance, it seems folks think it less offensive to dump waste over the boundary, rather

HOVE PARK

Three Cornered Copse has exhibited a splendid display of autumn colours this year, helped by relatively mild conditions and moderate winds, helping to keep the leaves on their branches while they turn to gold. Thankfully the dry conditions mean the paths are not quite as muddy as they can be at this time of year, so still passable in all places.

than disposing of it legally. The copse is a public park in the same way as, say, Hove Park, where no-one would think of tipping a wheelbarrow of garden waste. Unfortunately the council have had to enforce the rules on several occasions lately. In the time where care for our environment should be high on our agenda, the disposal of waste should be more thoughtful and considerate for users of our green spaces. Another Toads Hole Valley amendment has been published, in November, and it lists a few changes to the huge scheme, which will transform our neighbourhood. Much of it concerns the modification of traffic flow in the two main arterial roads which bracket the copse. Well worth a look for those of us concerned with looking after this precious green space. In the meantime, have a very peaceful Christmas, from The Friends of Three Cornered Copse. Simon Baxendale

10 Gaynor Wingham meets Marc Wise of 9Vines in Woodland Parade…

New Vines at 9Vines! A welcome new addition to Hove Park appeared during lockdown in Woodland Parade. 9Vines was opened by Marc Wise offering wines from all over the world in a shop/bar atmosphere where you can buy a few bottles or relax with a glass or two and some plates of local cheese or meat. Marc is no newcomer to the world of wine as he was a wine merchant in London for 20 years, starting and running a business called Planet of the Grapes, which he said was very similar to 9Vines. He felt the shop/bar model worked well to encourage people to try better wines and taste a wider range of wines. He moved to Brighton for more space and a more relaxed lifestyle, and he said he loves being near the sea and Downs. He said he looked for a site for quite some time before he found Woodland Parade. He finds the old-style parade very attractive and excellent for parking, an important detail if you want people to buy a few bottles at a time. He loves the area which he stumbled across whilst walking his dog in Hove Park. 9Vines opened in strange circumstances with the pandemic, but Marc said it has been a great start as the locals have been really welcoming and incredibly supportive. There is a real interest in wine in the local area and having the bar licence has meant people have been bumping into neighbours and friends over a glass and this has led to a relaxed feeling. They recently started monthly wine tastings which have been very popular and they plan to continue with these and add more event type tastings such as Beaujolais Nouveau day, creating a fun atmosphere to quaff a glass or enjoy an accompaniment of a plate of local cheese and meats. They are also increasing the range

of deli products and beers, as they find out more about what people want. We hope they go from strength to strength, as people get to know they are there. I was pleased to discover this with my husband! A great place to meet and buy those wines and deli items for Christmas and New Year this year. Good luck! Address: 7 Woodland Parade, Hove, BN3 6DR Open: Tuesday to Saturday 11-8pm and Sunday 12-8pm Email: marc@9vines.wine. Phone: 01273 702177

Kingsway to the Sea scheme awarded £9.5 million Plans to improve Hove seafront will receive a boost from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund. The Government made the announcement in the Autumn Budget Statement. A total of £9.5 million will be allocated to the scheme. The council is working with community organisations to develop ‘Kingsway to the Sea’, a project to regenerate the underused and run-down spaces on the seafront in West Hove. As well as improving the area for residents, the investment will complement other work underway on the seafront. It will improve access to green space, high quality attractions and outstanding sports facilities in a wonderfully diverse landscape. The scheme aims to protect and enhance the green spaces in the area, improving biodiversity and providing leisure and sports facilities which are relevant to the needs and aspirations of residents living and working in a densely populated part

of the city. Residents and users of the seafront area between the King Alfred Leisure Centre and Hove Lagoon have been taking part in a consultation to give their views on what they would like to see. Councillor Martin Osborne, co-chair of the city’s Tourism, Equalities, Communities & Culture Committee, said: “We’re delighted to receive this funding which will help us realise some of the ambitions our residents, businesses and local clubs have for this part of the seafront.” Work on the ‘Kingsway to the Sea’ project began back in 2018 when the West Hove Forum approached the council to work on plans to develop the area. Since then, council officers have been working with the West Hove Seafront Action Group. This led to the council commissioning landscape architects Untitled Practice to create an initial design.

15 Meet a writer who lives in West Hove…

Heather Eyles lives in West Hove. She is a writer who is best known for her children’s books, including “Well I Never”, and she has recently published the second volume of her memoirs, “Therefore I Am”. Why did you decide to write your memoirs? The subtitle of this book is ‘betrayal in the family’. I wanted to share my sense of compassion for the girl I once was, who played out her trauma in her life and relationships. Abuse within the family is a subject that is rarely spoken about, but, in this era of growing awareness of the harm that ‘keeping secrets’ can do, I want to bring the subject out of the dark and let some sunshine in. I hope the memoirs can be an instrument of healing for others. Tell us about the book… The book contrasts the wide-eyed excitement of a child and young teenager in the 1960s, when the world was rapidly changing and new freedoms were beckoning on every side, with the profound betrayal, secrets and shame that were waiting at home. I had kept my diaries of the time, so was able to resurrect some of the fun times and friendships, the laughter and the depths of despair that are the lot of the typical teenager. Fun and anguish go hand in hand. Does Brighton & Hove feature in the book? Very much so. I lived in Horsham, and Brighton had all the enticements of the big town. In those days there was a direct train line! I still have a receipt from Wades department store in Western Road, and the Lorelei coffee shop in The Lanes was a great ‘with it’ meeting place. I used to visit my boyfriend, who had a tiny, topfloor bedsit in Regency Square, and go for walks on the West Pier.

Do you still write children’s books? Not for a while now, but many are available on Amazon. The first volume of my memoir, “Me I Am”, is about my early childhood, but is definitely not a children’s book! As I have grandchildren, I may still get some new inspiration. Who are your own favourite writers? I have always loved autobiography and biography as I am fascinated by people and psychology. Joan Didion’s “The Year of Magical Thinking” had me gripped. “Therefore I Am” by Heather Eyles is available from Amazon as a paperback and on Kindle. For more information, visit heathereyles.com.

17 Volunteers are needed to help with local Beavers, Cubs and Scouts…

3rd Hove has a thriving Beaver Colony, Cub Pack and Scout troop that serves the local community and puts on an array of exciting and challenging activities for boys and girls aged 6 – 14 years old. Currently we are faced with a shortage of adult volunteers and uniformed leaders and we are calling on the local community to help in any way possible. Beavers can join at 6 years old and enjoy a whole range of exciting activities such as cooking, singing songs around a campfire, exploring the local neighbourhood and crabbing at the lagoon. These challenging yet fun tasks help them earn badges and prepare them for later life. Beavers can then move on to Cubs when they turn 8 years old and eventually Scouts when they turn 10½ years old. Wish Park playground refurbishment The playground is a source of much enjoyment and exercise for thousands of children year in year out. This is terrific, but heavy use has taken its toll and much of the equipment needs replacing. In autumn 2020 the Wish Park Friends Group submitted a proposal to Brighton & Hove City Council for refurbishment of the playground. This included feedback from parents and children who responded to a questionnaire, giving their views on the current equipment, how the playground could be improved and what they had experienced elsewhere in the city and further afield. So, it’s great to know that investment is coming to Wish Park playground in early 2022 and much of the feedback from parents and children has been taken on board. Did we get everything we asked for? Life’s rarely like that but with a new sequence of climbing frames, slides, swings, sandpit, zip wire, to name but a few items, there will be much new for children to experience and enjoy. The refurbished playground will have ‘Toddler’ and ‘Junior’ zones with equipment that will appeal to children of a wide age range. The Friends Group is in discussions for trees to be planted to the south side of the playground to provide the shading

which parents requested. In anticipation of the refurbishment, we have spent Sunday mornings tidying the flower beds next to the playground which has included planting 750 spring bulbs. This is a terrific start to 2022 and the proposed schedule for completion is February / March. The graphics give some idea of what is coming to the park.

New hedge for Hove Junior School A new plaque celebrating the life of “Granny Lollipop” has been unveiled at Hove Junior School on Portland Road to mark the completion of a brand new hedge on the south side of the school grounds.

Granny Lollipop was the nickname of the mother of local resident Elaine Evans who generously contributed to the cost of the hedge. The hedge was the brainchild of school parent Deborah Griffiths and Wish Ward elected representative Councillor Robert Nemeth. The project was backed by the school and was paid for by donations from Hove Civic Society, Brighton CPRE, the ward budgets of Cllrs Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn, Elaine Evans, the West Hove Forum and various generous parents. The function of the hedge is to tackle pollution, promote biodiversity and improve the school and public realm. It features around 100 elaeagnus bushes.

News from Robert Nemeth and Garry Peltzer Dunn, Conservative councillors for Wish ward…

Wish Ward Councillor News By now, residents will have noticed that a large series of works are underway on the least safe corners of Portland Road. The project is something that Cllr Garry Peltzer Dunn and I kicked off early in 2018 which falls within our long-term campaign with the two local schools to make walking with kids safer. The first victory in that regard was of course securing Hove’s first ever pavement parking ban to stop a selfish minority parking directly outside the doors of Wish Park Surgery near the two schools. Council officers assessed the junctions and concluded that six should be modified – Ingram Crescent West, Portland Avenue, Coleman Avenue, Grange Road, School Road and Rutland Gardens. Portland Avenue and Coleman Avenue particularly suffer from speeding so junction changes and recent renewal safety markings are particularly welcomed. Each road is being treated differently but the ultimate aim is to make walking safer by narrowing crossing widths and stopping illegal parking on corners. It is perhaps stating the obvious but increased visibility massively benefits motorists and cyclists too. Very much linked to this, our petition for 20mph on Portland Road, which many local residents signed, was warmly received by the Council. Again, the benefits for pedestrians and cyclists are obvious. Interestingly though, our own tests show that little, if any, time is added to car journeys when 20mph is observed because, quite simply, Portland Road has so many obstructions. Travelling over 20mph is either inappropriate or simply leads to getting stuck behind the car in front quicker. In addition to the hedge which is now in

place along the south side of Hove Junior School’s playground, the locations of the trees that we won funding for from the development of the Westerman Complex on School Road are now marked out with some pits prepared already. Some damaged trees are due to be replaced also. Another interesting development is that the Government has approved West Hove for ‘mini-Holland’ funding which provides a great opportunity to look carefully at numerous junctions and traffic flows generally. However, it could prove to be highly controversial if residents are not properly involved. The Government has also approved £9.5 million for the Hove seafront which is quite simply incredible. We continue to push for major improvement to Boundary Road and, indeed, are heavily involved with the spending of a small pot of COVID recovery cash on signage, deep-cleaning, planting and marketing. Cllrs Robert Nemeth & Garry Peltzer Dunn Robert.Nemeth@brighton-hove.gov.uk Garry.Peltzerdunn@brighton-hove.gov.uk

30 News from the Friends of Stoneham Park…

A new games arena for Stoneham Park This month will see the biggest investment in Stoneham Park for a generation, as major building work commences to replace the old multi-use games area with a more modern and safer version.

This represents an exciting upgrade of the facilities in the park and will benefit visitors and residents alike. Disruption is likely to last three weeks, so please bear this in mind when visiting the park.

and camping chairs to watch Back to the Future. We hope to see a similar turnout on Saturday 4 December as we screen the children’s animation Arthur Christmas. Check out our website for tickets!

The current ageing and rusting hulk will be dismantled entirely to make way for a new arena which will house both football and basketball. The dimensions will be different from the old unit, creating a larger space to the west which will be the home of our new nature trail (pictured). We have teamed up with our friends at Davis Park and Wish Park to apply for substantial funding from the Forestry Commission to plant new trees in West Hove, and this will form an integral part of the nature trail, we hope. The project is coming along nicely, and we hope to have some news about it in the new year.

In a busy few weeks, we held a park tidy-up and a quarterly meeting, the first in-person for almost two years. Everyone is always welcome to attend our meetings to raise matters of concern to them about Stoneham Park. Last month, we discussed the issue of dogs in the park. Dogs are not allowed inside the park at any time, under any circumstances. Should this rule be changed and the park become more inclusive? Perhaps dogs kept on a short lead at all times or excluded from certain sections would be a sensible compromise? Please let us know what you think by emailing us on the address below. Be sure to include the word ‘dogs’ in the subject!

Regular readers will be pleased to know that our open air cinema at the end of October was a tremendous success. We estimate an audience of a hundred people pitched up with their picnic blankets

From all of us at the Friends of Stoneham Park, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy 2022. Richard Hearnden info@friendsofstonehampark.uk

Meet a local dance teacher…

Poets Person…Vicky Moteane Vicky Moteane lives in Poets Corner and runs local dance school Elastic. They run classes at Bishop Hannington Community Centre and St Peter’s Church Hall on Portland Road. How long have you lived in Hove? For 12 years. We moved down from London, wanting the sea on our doorstep and a less hectic environment for our toddlers, but somewhere that still had a buzz about it. My mum, who has been heavily involved in my girls’ upbringing, was living in Seaford at the time (she’s since joined us in Hove) and I also needed to live closer to her wonderful support. For me, the period buildings, the sea, independent shops, sense of community and general positive vibe, all makes Hove a pretty special place to live.

35 Christmas at Samuel Chapman Hair – Hove

Fabulous hair for the festive season Samuel Chapman Salon, Hove! Assistant Manager, Adam says, “The festive holidays are here and we’re ready to spread a little extra sparkle by ensuring you look and feel fabulous.” Here are Samuel Chapman Salon’s top hair tips for a truly beautiful Christmas: Step into Christmas…

GENERAL

Senior Stylist, Jade loves a Christmas up-do. When in the chair, ask your stylist to show you a couple of easy party options. “At my appointments I ensure that we pull out all the stops to make an unforgettable entrance at your party.” Add some Christmas colour Go for it! Depending on the look you’re after, you may need more than one colour appointment, so it’s best to book early as Christmas is the busiest time. Floor manager, Reid suggests keeping an eye on our salon Instagram - @schapmansalon, for some creative colour inspiration. You’ll find lots of ideas to inspire your next salon visit. To keep your colour salon-fresh into the new year Reid recommends: •

Using a sulphate-free shampoo – All products sold in Samuel Chapman salon are sulphate-free, paraben-free & cruelty-free.

Rinse your hair with cold water as hot water opens the hair cuticle and washes colour away.

Use a heat protectant when drying and styling as heat will cause faster fading.

Extending the party season Prevent your hair from becoming dry and brittle from the cold weather. Junior stylist, Seb suggests our own range ‘Samuel Chapman Hair Care – Repair Mask’. “Shampoo twice. The first shampoo wash will remove dirt, while the second wash will help your locks benefit from the nourishing properties of the shampoo. Then towel dry your hair to remove most of the water, apply the mask through the mid-lengths & ends, avoiding the root area. Brush through and wrap up for at least 10 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. I’d recommend doing this at least once a week.”

Top Tip While your repair mask is on wrap your hair in cling film to retain the heat from your scalp and ensure the mask penetrates deeply into the hair. Book your hair appointment today with our fabulous team: Call 01273 323597 (Option 1) Email Hello@samuelchapmansalon.com Online www.samuelchapmansalon.com Receive £10 off your first Cut & Blowdry with this voucher. 36 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…

Christmas for the old folks, 1960 These ladies are nearly ready to begin their Christmas treat. But first the one to our left carefully places her friend’s paper hat on her head, taking care not to dislodge her hairnet. Will it be paper hats for all? The lady with her back to us, as well as the one helping her friend, are wearing hats fixed with hatpins, so they’re probably not about to come off, no matter how festive the season! We know from the register kept by staff at the Argus (ref ARG/3/8324) that this photograph was taken on Thursday 7 January 1960. It’s been labelled as, ‘The Annual Dinner for Old Folks at Hove Town Hall’ (ref ARG/3/8324). We also know that more photographs were taken on that occasion, one of them being of Alderman A Clarke, who processed through the Town Hall with a Christmas pudding, dressed as Father Christmas. Many helping hands were extended to the elderly during the last century, if records kept at The Keep are anything to go by. Councils and charities were in constant debate over what types of assistance they would finance – heating, housing, meals – but for summer outings and Christmas treats people contributed time and money freely. The ‘Brighter Brighton and Hove Old Folks’ Treat Fund’, set up by Andrew Melville, the owner of the Theatre Royal, was entirely funded by local people. Fund-raising concerts were held through the year and contribution boxes placed in shops and pubs. Every pub in Brighton and Hove had one – and there were nearly 500 locals in 1929! In that year, the largest amount - £11, 19 shillings and 10 pence - came from the Royal Hussars along

the Lewes Road, in the heart of industrial Brighton. These boxes must have looked quite ornate in their position on the public bar, as in 1928 they had all been regilded at a cost of £9, 8 shillings! In December 1930, 1,400 officially ‘old’ people – those aged over 70 – were entertained at The Dome. They played games (the records don’t tell us which ones!) and went home with prizes and gifts. Theatre staff had looked after them, the casts of local pantomimes had entertained them and local shops had donated the presents. There were tobacco, pipes and cigarettes for the men, slippers, stockings and socks for the ladies. It was a triumphant occasion. They were the ‘Old Folks’, the ‘Old Veterans of Brighton and Hove’, and, for a time, according to Mr Melville, ‘sunshine had been brought into their lives’. www.thekeep.info

42 Local charity Sussex Bake Down on baking for people in need…

Sussex Bake Down: made with love... There is nothing like homemade cake. It looks, smells and tastes magnificent and provides a warm, fuzzy feeling that’s hard to beat. Everyone at the Sussex Bake Down believes this is because each cake is made with love. We endeavour to show our support for local people in need by baking delicious homemade treats for them. In Brighton and Hove, around 5,500 families receive support from food banks or other emergency food organisations. We are on a mission to ensure every single one of them receives a goodie bag of baked delights each week. We aim to achieve this with a very simple system whereby bakers bake something of their choice, in their own home, and donate it by dropping it off at one of our eight cake hubs dotted around the city. The most desirable bakes are simple bakes: flapjacks, brownies, cookies, fairy each week. We now provide well over cakes, scones or loaf cakes, which means 200 goodie bags to four food banks and anyone who enjoys baking can be involved. many other local projects that support We also have a fabulous batch of birthday young care leavers, women fleeing abuse, cake bakers who lovingly create cakes for asylum seekers, refugees and homeless people referred to us by the food banks people. and projects we support. Pamela has health issues, and was referred by a friend to Together Co who thought it might help to have someone to keep her company.

Scheme member, Pamela: “My daughter puts storybooks on my iPad, and I do puzzles when I can to keep myself occupied, but I also really enjoy having Shapla to speak to. We get on really well – Shapla tells me things about her family, and I tell her things about mine. We really enjoy talking and it’s amazing how much we learn from one another. I’ve never known a person be so active. Volunteer Shapla and scheme member Pamela “Shapla has been so thoughtful too. 45 News from the council…

The World Reimagined Brighton & Hove will be one of the host cities for The World Reimagined – a ground-breaking national art education project that works to transform people’s understanding about the Transatlantic Slave Trade, its impact on all of us and to help us work together to make racial justice a reality. The World Reimagined will see trails of large-scale globe sculptures in several cities across the UK from August to October 2022. Artist Yinka Shonibare’s original globe sculpture, The World Reimagined, is the inspiration for the project, and his globe sculpture will be the base canvas on which commissioned artists can create their own designs. Each host city will present a set of 10 globes creating a 60-90 minute walking trail. Each globe will be decorated by commissioned artists who will express one of nine themes from the Journey of Discovery of the Transatlantic slave trade. Principal artists designing globes for the national project include Lakwena Maciver, Zak Ové, Nicola Green, Maxim (Prodigy), Kimathi Donkor and Lina Viktor. Opportunity for artists The World Reimagined are currently running an Artists Open Call for paid commissions to participate and are inviting artists to submit their proposed designs. Artists can sign up on the website (theworldreimagined.org/artists) to find out more. Submissions close at 5pm on 31 December 2021. Community programme Wrapped around the trails will be a broader learning and community programme. Bursaries will be available to schools across the city and selected schools will participate in the Globe Programme for free, supported by an artist across two years, to embed arts-based learning and

anti-racist practice into their teaching. Michelle Gayle, co-founder of The World Reimagined, said: “If we’re going to make racial justice a reality for all, it calls on us to courageously face our shared history with honesty, empathy and grace. If we do that, we can create a future in which everyone can say I’m seen. That’s the mission of The World Reimagined and we’re so delighted to work with the people and communities of Brighton & Hove.” There will be trails in seven other cities across the UK, which include Birmingham, Bristol, Leeds, London, Liverpool and Swansea. You can find out more by visiting The World Reimagined website: theworldreimagined.org.

49 News from the Hove Learning Federation…

School to move to Holland Road In January 2022, Louise Smith, Head of School at West Hove Infant School Connaught Road, will welcome her pupils and their families to a new school building at Holland Road, a building they will share with their link school and friends at Hove Junior School. Louise Smith with Mr Wolf

Over the years over 1,400 children have graduated from the Connaught Road site and moved into Hove Junior School at Holland Road, about a mile away. The demand for school places across the city has been falling in recent years and the space once needed at Connaught Road is no longer required. The federated governing board that oversees both schools believes the move to Holland Road provides a pragmatic solution and safeguards the provision of education from an infant school that has maintained an Outstanding Ofsted rating since 2008. Many parents with children at both schools have welcomed this planned move, as it means they will no longer need to make the drop off and pick up dash across town twice a day. The two schools have worked closely for many years and this move will only serve to strengthen the bond. Lorna Cummings

GENERAL

Louise is no stranger to setting up new sites; in 2011 along with a team of staff from the original West Hove site at School Road, she created a mirrored version of this established infant school.

Head of School at Holland Road knows both schools well, having previously been Head of School at West Hove Infant School on School Road. She welcomes the idea that children will experience their infant and junior education in one building, starting their journey in the cosy classrooms at the base of the purpose-designed building and graduating to the year 6 classrooms on the second floor with inspiring city and sea views. The plans for the move are well underway and to help the children with the transition Louise Smith is relying on the support of her special puppet friend Mr Wolf. Throughout lockdown Louise Smith and Mr Wolf read stories to all West Hove Infant School children, producing more than 50 short films. These films helped to keep pupils connected to school and the fun and nurturing spirit of the school alive. Mr Wolf has been explaining the move to Connaught Road pupils exploring the ups and downs of change in a child-friendly way. All the staff and Mr Wolf are very excited about the move and all look forward to having the children on one site.

55 Christmas news from Martlets hospice…

Remember Together this Christmas with Martlets ... “We miss Mum every day but Christmas is always that bit harder because it is a time that she loved. Carrying on traditions that she started with our children make her feel closer to us.” - Rebekah, whose mum was cared for by Martlets

David Phillips, supporter engagement manager, Martlets, commented: “This year has been challenging for everyone. We want to thank our incredible community that has come together to keep Martlets caring. We know that moments spent with each other will have more meaning than ever. Remembering loved ones together is an important part of what makes this time of year so special.” As a charity in the heart of Brighton and Hove and the surrounding areas, Martlets has organised a Community Christmas Memory Tree trail to give people the space to stop and remem-

ber loved ones during the busy Christmas rush. A map of the trees is available at martlets. org.uk/remember-together. Martlets is planning an in-person and a virtual ‘Light up a Life’ service this year at 4.30pm on Sunday 12 December to remember loved ones. Register online to join us in the hospice garden or our virtual service at martlets.org. uk/remember-together. Each of Martlets’ eight charity shops rely on the support of customers shopping for gifts and party outfits – and donations of those unwanted gifts afterwards! Make it a more sustainable Christmas by checking out charity shops first and order cards and presents online too at www.martlets.org.uk. Martlets keeps caring thanks to the support of our community; please consider making a donation this Christmas.

61 Breakwater BN3 have created an affordable changing robe and have some tips for staying safe in the sea…

New local business...Breakwater BN3 We’re Lara and Mel, and Breakwater BN3 is our family business that launched September 2021. We’ve been blown away by the support from the community, so wanted to share our journey.

In response to comments on community forums about other changing robes we implemented several features as standard, such as full-length arms. By adding quick Velcro fastening we addressed the issue of fumbling with the chunky twoway zip, until hands had warmed in the deep fleece-lined pockets. The Breakwater is also designed to be less bulky and we added a free drawstring bag to make it even easier to store and carry. And of course, it is waterproof and windproof to protect you from the elements. With our love of the sea and outdoors, it’s great to have launched a local start-up that complements our family lifestyle. Whether camping, kitesurfing, swimming or simply jumping through the waves with our kids, the Breakwater changing robe has become an essential piece of kit for our everyday life. We say wear it how you like! With colder weather setting in, now is the time to invest in a changing robe and consider how to stay safe in the sea. Stay safe Never go out alone – buddy up! Let someone know where you are and have a charged phone with you. Check the weather forecast and tide times. If you need support with this, join a group.

GENERAL

As members of the local watersports community, we were pained at the high cost of changing robes. When we started to research, we found many shared our frustrations. This led us to set up a business, with the mission to create a more affordable changing robe that didn’t compromise on quality or look.

Wear the right kit Wear something on your head to preserve body heat. Consider wearing neoprene gloves, booties, or a suitable wetsuit. We’d recommend bright colours to be seen. Know your limits As the temperature drops, decrease the time you spend in the water. If you start to feel comfortable in the water, that is the time to get out. Get dry. Get warm. Ensure you dry and change quickly into plenty of warm layers, preferably protected from the wind. Enjoy a hot drink. Check out our website and social media to learn more about Breakwater BN3: www.breakwaterBN3.co.uk Facebook and Instagram: @BreakwaterBN3 To help us grow our reach, the Breakwater robe is available on Amazon for £95.

65 A local writer tells us about her latest children’s book…

New book: “Eddy Feels at Home” Sarah McGeough lives in Artists Corner and is an author and book coach. She is passionate about supporting adoptive families and helping people fulfil their dream of writing a book. It seems a lifetime ago since I was sitting on the beach through lockdown in May 2020, talking to my friend about writing a book. At that point I had a few ideas as to what I might write about, but it felt like it would be a hard task to make it become a reality. How on earth do you write a book?

Both books cover a topic that is close to my heart. Since adopting our son I have always had the worry of telling him about his background. I wanted to be able to do it in the right way. There didn’t seem to be many good adoption books out there, so I decided to write them myself. The colourful characters of Flossy and Frank Flamingo and Eddy Emu make them a wonderful story for all children. Eddy Finds a Family is unique as it explains both the parent and child’s journey. My son often asks, ‘How did you find me?’ and, ‘Was I lost?’ as he is interested to know how we came together to be a family. It is vitally important he understands. Eddy Feels at Home focuses on Eddy settling in with his new family and highlights the ups and downs in the early stages of adoption. I am passionate about helping adoptive families and am proud to say Connecting people looking to date, network and socialise through events that support local businesses. www.connectedbrighton.com

GENERAL

Fast forward to now and my first children’s book Eddy Finds a Family has been a great success, I qualified as a coach in June 2021 and recently launched my second book Eddy Feels at Home.

Adoption UK have officially endorsed my latest book. I am volunteering with them to start an adoption community group in the Brighton and Hove area. Having a new career as a book coach is hugely fulfilling. I have spoken to many people who have had an idea but don’t know where to begin, or they have written a fair amount but have no confidence to progress. I pride myself in being able to empower people to believe in their book dreams. Both books are available via my website, as well as my Eddy short stories and Sarah’s seaside blog. If you have ever thought about writing a book, then please get in touch. I offer a free discovery call. 67 Healthy living advice from Nathalie Sansonetti…

Open your eyes and ‘smell’ the statistics But is anyone actually looking at the root of the problem staring us in the face?

Cover half of your plate with colourful vegetables

What about new research from the University of Gothenburg (Sweden) reporting that over 80% - yes: 80% of people - in intensive care with Covid were OBESE? (After taking into account all other health factors such as heart disease and diabetes.) What about numbers from the CDC (US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) showing that 89% of those hospitalised with Covid had at least one of the five risk factors (hypertension, obesity, diabetes, lung disease and cardiovascular disease) – hypertension and obesity being the most prevalent?

WILL place you, the overstretched health services and the economy in a stronger position long-term.

eating foods that are closer to their natural states

How about the fact that over 62% of all UK adults are now obese, with 58% women and 68% men? Is anyone ‘at the top’ putting MORE serious resources right now into curbing THAT pandemic? Not that I can see.

having half of your plate covered with colourful vegetables

doing more about stress.

The good news: new research reported in the British Medical Journal observed 3,000 health workers in six different countries and discovered that a plant-orfish-based diet reduced the chances of a moderate to severe Covid infection by more than half!

If the proof really is in the ‘pudding’ – then how about the fact that, despite the widespread uptake of vaccination, Covid cases continue to rise - as do sales of processed and fast-foods?

With the focus of health agencies and governments having totally shifted to finding quick fixes for Covid, very little valuable, lasting advice is provided to help boost people’s immunity or to change dietary habits. Granted, curbing obesity is NOT a quick fix or cure for Covid, but it

The fund is open to organisations that: •

Are BME led and/or have a predominantly BME membership

Have an annual income of £20,000 or less

Aim to improve well-being, build cohesion or promote fairness

Groups must have a governing document and are expected to have a bank account or be in the process of opening one. All grants will need to be spent by 31 May 2022. The deadline for application is 10 December 2021. For details of how to apply, visit: brighton-hove.gov.uk/content/ life-events-and-communities/

Explore the city’s history by cycle There’s a new way to explore Brighton & Hove’s history and culture thanks to a new addition to a city cycle map. An ‘excursions’ layer has been added to the Brighton & Hove cycle map which shows the locations of more than 150 commemorative plaques. They have even been split into five different categories: Arts & Culture; Civic, Political and Military; Foundation and Development of the Resort; Science and Industry; and Sport.

Tagore, Indian Polymath au thor and Nobel Laureate from Bengal, at Hotel du Vin in Ship Street.

They stretch as far east as the Rudyard Kipling plaque in Rottingdean, as far west as the Margaret Powell (writer) plaque on Old Shoreham Road and as far north as the Havergal Brian (composer) plaque in Moulsecoomb.

The map allows you to filter each category and plan your route. Its Way finder can be used to find the quietest or quickest route and will even tell you how many calories you’ve burnt and how much CO2 you’ve saved.

The new map layer coincides with the recent unveiling of a plaque in honour of Rabindranath

73 Local news…

A259 cycle lane to be made permanent Brighton & Hove City Council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, meeting on 16th November, approved a report which recommended that the A259 Phase 1 cycle lane, along the south side of King’s Road and Kingsway, be made permanent.

Funded by the Government’s Active Travel Fund, the temporary westbound cycle lane was introduced on 16 August 2020, under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order, with amended parking and waiting restrictions. The easternmost section between the Brighton Palace Pier and West Street was removed on 27 August 2020, in response to initial feedback, and the remaining section (between West Street and Fourth Avenue) has been carefully monitored since that date. The report said that figures from March 2018 showed average daily count figures of 1,400 cyclists. Figures from March 2021, following implementation of the new lane, showed an average daily figure of 2,119 cyclists. This is an increase of 51.3% and warmer months have shown an even greater increase in usage. Early signs from the casualty data are also positive, with no casualties involving pedestrians or cyclists recorded between August 2020 and March 2021; however, further monitoring is needed before any definitive conclusions can be reached. During video surveys undertaken in September 2020, approximately 80% of

westbound cyclists were observed to be using the new on-carriageway lane. Those remaining on the promenade lane tended to be inexperienced cyclists, or those travelling to and from seafront destinations such as the i360. In order to address these issues, the council will be making improvements to the West Street ramp, changing the signage and removing redundant markings. The council’s long-term ambition for the A259 is to have a two-way protected cycle lane on the south side of the road, linking Brighton to Shoreham, but this is subject to future funding and feasibility and will involve working with West Sussex County Council.

77 News from the council…

Consultation on single-use barbecues Brighton & Hove City Council want your views on the use of cheap, single-use barbecues on the beach. They have launched a consultation on whether people should be allowed to use single-use, throw-away barbecues on our beaches or in parks and open spaces.

Proper portable barbecues will still be allowed on certain beaches, parks and open spaces, as they are now. The consultation also asks for views on whether people should be allowed to let off balloons and so-called ‘sky lanterns’ into the atmosphere, which can harm animals, the environment and, in the case of lanterns, cause fires. The questionnaire comes after complaints from residents about people leaving single-use, often still hot, barbecues on our beaches, parks and open spaces. A fire was caused in the Cityclean depot from a barbecue in 2019. Residents also want action against balloons and sky lanterns Other residents have asked for action against balloons and sky lanterns, after reports of people letting them off in public spaces. The council believe single-use barbecues are problematic for reasons including: • • • •

posing a fire risk when in use and if not disposed of correctly presenting a risk of injury to people and animals if not set up correctly, they can scorch and damage the environment when not disposed of it means the taxpayer has to pay for the tidy-up.

GENERAL

Proper portable barbecues will still be allowed

Lanterns and balloons are also problematic because: •

both return to the ground as litter and can be ingested by wildlife, causing risk of death, injury and entrapment

they’re impossible to dispose of in a safe way as the owner has no way of finding them, once released

for lanterns, there is no way of ensuring they are extinguished before reaching the ground and they can therefore cause a fire.

The RSPCA has already called for sky lanterns to be completely banned. It says when sky lanterns are ingested by an animal, sharp parts can cause internal bleeding. Animals can also become entangled in fallen lantern frames and marine life is endangered by lanterns falling into the sea. The consultation is open until Sunday 2 January 2022.
