One of the things we hope to see happening this year is the local community groups who weren’t able to meet for most of 2020 start to open again and with it local people once more get to interact and meet socially without restriction. With that in mind we ask you to please let us know as your groups open up again throughout 2021. We can help by reminding the wider community what your group is all about, where and when you meet and whether you are inviting new people to join.

News from Chris Henry and Carmen Appich, Labour councillors for Westbourne ward…

Westbourne Councillor News Westbourne Ward has been slowly but surely getting the facelift we have been campaigning for. The latest instalment has been the clearing of the walkways to Aldrington Station.

POETS CORNER

5

You’ll see from the pictures that it’s been cleared of overhanging branches and vegetation on the two 100m footpaths serving the platforms at Aldrington making the footpaths feel much more open and secure. The next exciting development at this train station will be a new entrance to the platform from the northern side, off Old Shoreham Road. It’s a great little station and we want more people to use it and feel safe. We also promised to unlock some money to get the Western Esplanade some TLC and to make the area more family friendly.

Covid has made us feel that the need for outdoor space and safe outdoor fitness is needed now more than ever. So in 2021 you will begin to see some improvements start. Integral to these plans is the Rockwater venue, which many of you will have visited and had a coffee at. We want this stretch to be a comfortable and exciting area for families and local residents so we have worked hard with the owner to ensure that the building, how it operates and who it appeals to is something we can benefit from in Westbourne and Hove. With a revamp to the sports facilities, such as the tennis, we hope to stop the slow decline of the beautiful stretch of Hove. Christmas has been different this year, but we hope you and your family enjoyed it and had an opportunity to catch up, whether virtually or in person. We look forward to seeing you and working with you to keep Westbourne Ward beautiful in 2021. Chris and Carmen Christopher.Henry@brighton-hove.gov.uk Carmen.Appich@brighton-hove.gov.uk

Poets Corner news…

The Friends of Stoneham Park We can only hope that this coming year proves to be better than the one just departed. With vaccination underway, the pandemic that has affected all our lives we hope will be substantially mitigated within the next 12 months. What does that mean for us in the Friends of Stoneham Park? There is a chance, but nothing more than that, that we will be able to stage some events once the weather improves and the difficult winter months are behind us. If so, then we hope to have another go at holding the outdoor cinema and will contact those who won free tickets in the ballot back in September. If that works out well, then we may have some more screenings.

There is a chance, but nothing more than that, that we will be able to stage some events once the weather improves... Likewise, we might be able to hold an Easter egg hunt in the park come April, and this is under active consideration. If that goes ahead, then we are probably going to hold the Midsummer Fair in June. But that is a long way off and there are, to borrow a phrase, many known unknowns and a good helping of unknown unknowns. Last month, we had a Zoom meeting at which, once again, we were pleased to welcome a new face. Matters for discussion included the general state of the park, litter, and fly-tipping. You read that right, fly-tipping. I cannot think of anything quite as selfish as dumping a wardrobe or a mattress in our park, just because the tip turned you away because you were in a van, or because you didn’t make it in time before closing. How does it look to the hundreds of families who use our

park and whose children play in our park? There are safety implications, should a youngster choose to play in some unstable, soggy, dumped chipboard furniture. Please don’t do it. Likewise, please think twice when putting goods out on the pavement outside your house. Some of this stuff doesn’t get picked up by people who actually need it, but by others (often older children) who take it to the park and smash it up. A computer monitor was a recent gift for us to clear away. We do hope that in the coming year we can finally get a grip on the bins, restore some of the grass, and improve the sports facilities in the park. But we really do need your help if you can spare a bit of time to help us achieve these goals. Richard Hearnden www.friendsofstonehampark.uk

Accessible gardening at Ingram Crescent The Ingram Crescent Community Garden team of volunteers have recently fitted wheelchair-accessible raised beds or “pods” within the Ingram Crescent Rose Garden, thanks to a grant from the council. The secretary of the estate’s residents’ association, Kim Foster, told us more… A small group of volunteers took over the care of the 120’x 60’ Rose Garden in late 2016. The first six months or so were spent clearing the wildly overgrown beds to allow the existing plants to begin to thrive again. Currently, there is a core group of four gardeners, three of whom live on the estate, and we welcome anyone who’d like to join us. We wanted to provide fully accessible gardening - for both wheelchair users and for those who find it difficult to bend - and these drive-in beds meet the needs of both. We are thrilled with our TerraForm Pods (https://terraform.fr/english-version/), very thankful to BHCC for the funding and to the construction team for turning our wish into reality.

Community garden volunteer Ann tests out one of the new pods

we made twice as much in donations for produce this year than last - all donations go back into the garden by way of plants, compost etc.

Lockdown 2020:

Plans for 2021:

Due to the amazing Spring weather, and the size of the garden, we were gardening almost every day during Lockdown, which provided both our exercise and afforded the garden loads of extra attention! Running several ad-hoc ‘gardening workshops’ brought in new visitors and even some new volunteers! Estate residents used the garden much more than in previous years, taking advantage of our benches, stopping for a chat and enjoying the space. We were also ‘discovered’ by locals exploring their neighbourhood, and we became a focal point for so many people. We grow vegetables as well as flowers, and thanks to the increase of visitors,

For more information, visit/join the Ingram Crescent Community Garden page on Facebook, or email icra.committee@gmail.com

We‘re looking forward to being able to construct our bird feeding station, a plan made possible by another BHCC grant and which has been on ‘lockdown-hold’. We’re keenly looking forward to seeing the growth of our newly created wildflower meadow at the west entrance to the garden. We’re also planning to organise a community tree-planting event (when Covid-appropriate), and then…perhaps a Summer Garden Party to celebrate the ‘elimination’ of Covid-19.

New mast proposal...

A phone mast is proposed to be sited on this corner

The 17.5m grey mast with associated equipment is proposed by Cornerstone and Telefónica UK Ltd (which owns O2). They say that a mast is required at this location to provide 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G coverage for Telefónica users in the area after a Notice to Quit was issued for their installation on the rooftop of the Saxon Works building in Olive Road, which is to be redeveloped. They want a location as close as possible to the existing site to avoid creating coverage gaps, and the proposal allows for 5G services to be added without any additional installation. The application can be found on the council’s planning register: planningapps.brighton-hove. gov.uk (BH2020/03207).

West Hove Forum has also made a donation from its allocation of the Healthy Neighbourhood Fund. A recent grant from Rampion Wind Farm has meant that the scheme can finally go ahead. We are now seeking the final thoughts of residents nearby on the scheme, which will ultimately see one quadrant around each of the two pavilions transformed into an incredibly colourful and vibrant area to create visual interest and improve biodiversity. The two quadrants in question are those situated closest to the water so that the scheme may be viewed from all around the Lagoon, including from the water and as far away as the Big Beach Café.

19 Meet a local writer…

Frances Quinn is a local author, whose first novel, The Smallest Man, is published this month. How long have you lived in Hove? We moved here from Tunbridge Wells in October 2018. Up till then I had two ambitions in life: to live in Hove and to get a novel published. I got my publishing deal three weeks after moving here, so I ticked them both off in the same month! What’s your book about? The Smallest Man is set in 17th century England, and tells the story of Nat Davy, a boy with dwarfism, who’s sold by his father and given as a present to Queen Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I. He becomes a sort of human pet at the court, just as the country is heading for the civil war that will end in the execution of the king. Where did you get the idea from? It’s inspired by a true story. The real character was a man called Jeffrey Hudson who, as a boy, was presented to the queen in a pie! I didn’t want to write a fictionalised biography though, so I created Nat, who has his own story. Who do you think the book will appeal to? Obviously, I hope historical fiction fans will like it, but it’s had good reviews from people who don’t normally read historical novels too. I think sometimes historical fiction overdoes the history lessons – of course, the background has to be accurate but it was equally important to me to tell a page-turning story, with a bit of humour, some quirky characters, and not so much of the clashing swords, heaving bosoms and gadzookery side of things.

Do you plan to set any future books in Brighton and Hove? I hope to. My second book, which is out next year, had to be set mainly in London for plot purposes, but I’m hoping this area’s colourful history will give me an idea for the next one. I love the Hove Museum, so I’ll be looking for ideas there, and if anyone knows of a local story that would make a good background for a novel, I’d really like to hear it – you can get in touch through my Facebook page, @FrancesQuinnAuthor, or on Twitter I’m @franquinn. The Smallest Man is published by Simon & Schuster. It’s available from Amazon, bookshop.org and independent bookshops.

21 This article is by residents of Hove Park and Goldstone Valley…

Toads Hole Valley development In the next few months, the Council are expected to consider granting planning permission for this huge development.

Despite hundreds of Hove residents raising concerns with the Council, there is nothing in the planning application about improving infrastructure, in order to reduce the impact this huge traffic-generating and environment-destroying development will have. Congestion will be made worse as King George VI Avenue (the main route for Hove residents to access the bypass) is to be declassified from a major to a minor road, reducing capacity, so forcing traffic to seek other routes, through already overcrowded residential streets. There is no logic to this. There will be one major entrance/exit at the bottom of King George VI Avenue (Snakey Hill) onto Toads Hole Valley. 6,000 vehicles will use this entrance each day. Surely it would be better to have the main entrance at the top of Snakey Hill, so traffic can access the bypass directly to and from the estate? The council refuse to consider this. Toads Hole Valley is a wildlife haven. Local and national wildlife groups have raised objections to the application. Dormice (one of the UK’s most vulnerable species) protected by law live there. Once their habitat has been destroyed, they will be given a

With a population of around 3,500 people, workplaces for 1,800 and a 900-pupil school, the development will increase traffic on local Hove roads by 40%. traffic island in the middle of Snakey Hill to help them cross to the local copse to find a new home. Hedgehogs will be saved by the workmen spotting them and moving them to safer ground! How much longer will Hangleton residents be able to enjoy hedgehogs visiting their gardens? Hove’s drinking water comes from the aquifer at Toads Hole Valley. Southern Water and the Environment Agency have concerns about the effect the 10-year building works and climate change will have on it. Please support us in getting the council to understand that before this development is agreed a solution needs to be found to reduce the huge negative impact on humans, wildlife and the environment. 23 News from the Friends of Hove Park…

Best Wishes for the New Year... All our events for 2020 unfortunately had to be cancelled like so many others throughout the country. We don’t yet know how 2021 will develop but, with the vaccine rollout underway, we can hope it will be possible to gradually return to a more normal existence.

So hoping you stay safe and well and here’s a final 2020 photo showing the only snowman visible so far this winter around the park - it forms part of the Christmas decorations on a house opposite.

Despite the difficulties, the gardeners have managed to keep the park in good shape and it has once again retained its Green Flag award. One of the few winter flowering plants in the park is shown providing a colourful display to brighten up the short days. The park has been invaluable for so many people in these tough and challenging times and the café has continued to provide sterling service under the various restrictions. Dog walking has been particularly popular one busily eyes a squirrel high up a tree and lets everyone know it’s there with enthusiastic barking.

25 Meet a local resident who runs a jewellery business…

Hove Park person…Louise Head Louise Head lives with her family in the Hove Park area, near The Upper Drive. She and her husband started a jewellery business, Willow & Waterhouse, in the summer. What do you like about living in Hove? HOVE PARK

We love living in Hove and we’ve always felt so happy here. The people and community are incredible and there’s nowhere quite like Brighton and Hove is there?! We love the buzz and how close we are to the vibrancy of the beach and serene countryside. Why did you decide to set up a jewellery business? The curveball of a year that 2020 was and life in lockdown made us rethink things and so we set out planning our little business which launched in August 2020. We wanted to help people find beautiful jewellery and make gifting from afar easy by lovingly wrapping and sending presents directly. A love of fine jewellery runs in our family and we’re fourth generation jewellers. My grandfather ran his business from Hatton Garden in London many years ago and my uncle has continued the tradition. Willow and Waterhouse has been a dream of ours for a long time and we’re excited to see what 2021 holds. What sort of jewellery do you sell? We specialise in fine gold and silver jewellery, stones and pearls. All our jewellery has been handpicked and our collection is inspired by the beautiful coast and countryside that surrounds us. What’s your most popular item? Our pearl necklaces and earrings have been incredibly popular and many have been given as gifts. The best part of what we do is writing customer’s messages on little personalised cards before popping

their gift in the post and sending it to their loved ones. We’ve been really touched by people’s messages especially given the year it’s been. What do you like to do to relax? With a one and three year old we rarely find time to relax! We love family time and when we’re not working, we can usually be found exploring at the beach, Lagoon or walking on the Downs. We’re often hunting for the Gruffalo or searching for dinosaur tracks when we’re out and about! For more information visit www.willowandwaterhouse.com or email hello@willowandwaterhouse.com

29 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at the wildlife of Hove…

Wildlife on the coast The coast is the most paradoxical entity in Hove; constantly changing but reliably ever-present. As I’m regularly beside or in the water I thought I would share some of the things that I’ve seen whilst walking and swimming between Shoreham Port and the Palace Pier.

This is the time of year when Cormorants become gregarious to ease their search for fish shoals but can often be seen ‘shooting fish in a barrel’ in the Lagoon. You may have thought the Lagoon a strange place for fish, but I can assure you Plaice can be found there. Although we’re just heading into mid-winter, it won’t be long before migratory birds return to Britain after spending the winter amongst milder climes. Wheatears, Swifts and Swallows are all grateful visitors as they refuel before continuing their journey north. But birds aren’t the only warm-blooded animals you can see from the promenade. Sometimes you’ll get to see a Grey Seal bobbing along in the shallows, sticking their heads above water checking out the oblivious swimmers.

GENERAL

The most obvious wildlife along the seafront are the birds, gliding lazily even on the most severe of south-westerlies. Black-headed, Herring and Lesser Black-backed make up the majority of ‘sea gulls’, but occasionally the massive, stern-looking Greater Black-backed Gull can be seen patrolling the shallows.

finding out what is present in the waters you rarely get to see. This time of year is excellent to begin getting your eye in for what lurks beneath as rougher seas self-clean, leaving their waste on the beach. The most numerous are mermaid’s purses which are little keratin sacs attached to seaweed holding the developing embryos of sharks and rays. The most common seen along our seafront are Thornback Rays and Small-spotted Catsharks but another 10 different types of egg-case can be found along the strandline.

Recently the Sussex Wildlife Trust has campaigned for #HelpOurKelp to proCetaceans are the most numerous mamtect the Kelp Forest where many of the mal group within the UK and many of animals I’ve mentioned live, and next year them occur nearby with several sightings a brand new National Lottery funded proof Bottlenose and Common Dolphins. 30 We catch up with one of Brighton & Hove Albion’s former players…

Meet Adam Virgo Adam Virgo played football for Brighton & Hove Albion from 2000-2005 and then again from 2008-10, with a spell at Celtic in between. Since he retired as a footballer he has worked as a TV pundit and co-commentator for channels including BT Sport, Sky, Eurosport and Channel 5, and he also runs his own football academy, the Adam Virgo Academy, in Brighton and Sussex. What was the highlight of your career with the Albion? Making my debut is my favourite highlight. This may surprise many as people will remember me for my goal against Swindon and my goal against Ipswich to keep us in the Championship. Another highlight is playing at the Millennium Stadium in the League One play-off final. The reason I picked my debut is because it was always my dream to become a professional footballer and it’s a reward for the sacrifices and hard work to get to that point. It was a goal I set myself from the age of five. The experience of playing for your hometown club and the experience of playing a competitive professional game for the first time is one I will never forget. Who was the best player you played against? When I played Ipswich earlier in my career, I played against a young Darren Bent who went on to play for Tottenham and scored over 100 Premier League Travel to

goals. Even at that young age his movement and his thinking of where to be in the 18-yard box was something you could clearly see he would go onto a successful career. We played Tottenham in the FA Cup and I played against Robbie Keane. You are always interested when you mark a player like him to see what all the fuss is about as he played for Liverpool and in the World Cup for the Republic of Ireland. His movement was exceptional, he never stopped running and he had this mindset of always knowing what was going to happen before everyone else did. Are you still in touch with any of your old team-mates? When you move from club to club you do build friendships with players but once they move on it’s difficult to keep in touch with everyone. You will find with most footballers that they may keep in touch with one or two good friends from their playing days (as I have done), but fortunately in my job travelling the country with my media work I always say hi and have a catch-up with ex-players, for example Steve Cook at Bournemouth who I catch up with regularly when I cover Bournemouth. He was kind enough to pass on a signed shirt for my son! What do you think of the current Brighton team? I think Graham is assembling a very good squad of players to be competitive in the Premier League. I’ve enjoyed watching his style of play as I felt this needed to

31 players aged 13-18 are kept in the academy system longer. Tell us more about the academy… We will soon be approaching our third birthday and as a family run business we are extremely proud of what we have achieved so far. Aimed at girls and boys of any ability, the academy offers weekly training sessions during the term and 5-star rated football camps during the holidays. Players are coached by our FA qualified and UEFA coaches.

I am heavily involved in the academy so parents and children can rely on my personal advice and my 21+ years in the professional football industry to get the best out of their academy experience. I hope to build players’ confidence (whether they want to play professionally or just for the enjoyment of the game) but change even though Chris Hughton did if we do produce a professional footballer, a brilliant job. My only concern is the lack of goals. Hopefully this will change as the I will feel extremely proud. 33 An update on what has happened to the Coral Health & Fitness centre...

Introducing Hove Fitness & Squash... Indoor sports facilities have been hit hard during the coronavirus pandemic, having to close their doors for much of 2020, so you may think it’s a surprising time to start out in the leisure sector.

Hove Fitness & Squash, on the former site of Coral Health and Fitness, Orchard Road, Hove, has retained several of Coral’s popular instructors and, since opening in October, welcomed back many of its loyal customers. However, the new club is far more than just a change of name, with exciting new classes, renovated squash courts, a new café and bar, and easier online booking, as well as a fresh new look. The club is really keen to make sure both old and new customers feel really welcome, with something to offer for everybody. “Our ambition is to create a truly community-focused and inclusive environment where absolutely everyone is welcome, no matter what your age or previous gym, fitness class or squash experience is,” explains Matt.

The club is really keen to make sure both old and new customers feel really welcome Listening to feedback, the team have introduced earlier opening hours, new ‘pop-up’ classes and great coffee, courtesy of Trading Post Coffee Roasters. They’re also making sure the club is completely Covid-safe. “Our members’ safety is our top priority,” says Lucy. “We’ve introduced one-way systems, made sure there’s plenty of space in gyms and classes and everything is cleaned several times a day.”

Precautions such as spaced-out court bookings are also keeping the squash and racketball players safe. Squash was a major part of the former Coral club, enjoyed by club players of all levels, while also establishing a national centre of excellence for junior squash.

GENERAL

Luckily, three local sports and fitness enthusiasts, Lucy Egan, Matt Lambert and Ben Hutton, have been prepared to take on the challenges and uncertainties of coronavirus to open a new club in the heart of Hove.

“When the old club closed earlier this year, it was a blow to hundreds of supportive members. But it’s great that, with a dedicated and passionate team, we’ve been able to establish an inclusive, community-based club, where we can continue to develop squash talent from a young age.” Working together in challenging times, Ben, Lucy and Matt have created a thriving fitness hub, with free parking, where everybody can enjoy the exercises they love, and then socialise – safely – in the well-stocked bar and café. 2021 could be another challenging year, but with strong support from current members, and the exciting opportunity to welcome lots of new members, Lucy, Matt and Ben are ready to welcome it with positivity and energy. 35 13-year-old Jamie Price tells us why he loves being a scout…

Why Scouting is Great... I joined the 14th Hove Scouts group as a cub at the age of eight. My dad had told me that he had really enjoyed it when he was a child. When I first went along I didn’t really know anybody there but soon made friends as there were lots of people the same age and they were really welcoming.

On my first Summer with Scouts I had the chance to go on an International Jamboree for a whole week of camping. Thousands of Scouts from all across the world came together in one place and did tons of fun activities in the local area. That year it was in Weymouth, Dorset. We helped restore an ancient Roman road, went crabbing in the harbour, made lots of new friends, cooked our own food and had fun every second of it.

GENERAL

During the time I’ve been at Scouts so far I have learnt teamwork skills, leadership skills and worked on badges which taught me other great skills such as coding, sewing, knot tying and cooking. Scouts have been so great for me. I have been to so many wonderful events that everyone should have the opportunity to experience.

need in my life and it has also been a great way to make new friends. Jamie Price

Scouting is really inclusive, it’s great for boys and girls of all ages; you can start at the age of 6 all the way to 18.

Jamie is a member of the 14th Hove Scouts (St Andrew’s Portslade), based in Vale Park (14thhove.scoutsites.org.uk).

Beavers: 6-8

Cubs: 8-10.5 Scouts: 10.5-14 Explorers: 14-18 You do great activities every week within your troop at the Scout hut, and the older you are the more adventurous activities you will do. My absolute favourite thing to do with the Scouts is camping but there are also weekend trips to local activity centres to try things such as rock climbing, archery, caving and lots more. Scouting has taught me many skills I will

36 Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…

A Victorian boomtown... 120 years ago, on January 22nd 1901, Queen Victoria’s death signalled the end of an era in which few British subjects could remember another monarch.

In 1801, only 101 persons lived in Hove; by the time of Queen Victoria’s funeral, a hundred years later, this had rocketed to an astounding 30,000. A spectacular rate of growth matching that of the northern industrial towns (such as Bradford) during the industrial revolution. At the start of her reign, the village of Hove consisted of just one single street (Hove Street) with its “mean and insignificant assemblage of huts” and manor house; a sprinkling of grander houses; the Ship Inn; the desolate ruins of St Andrew’s Church; and the Coastguard Station (to combat the smugglers). Eastwards across open fields, the labourers and fisherfolk of the village gazed up in awe as the elegant cream façades of Brunswick Town rose from a gargantuan building site to magnificently dominate the distant skyline. However, the wealthy aristocratic elite overflowing across the border from Brighton, not wishing to be associated with such vulgar hoi polloi, never deigned to put the name of humble Hove on their calling cards, preferring the prestigious designation of West Brighton instead. In 1893, this boomtown had amalgamated with Aldrington, a parish which at the start of the Victorian age had not one single inhabitant. By the end of Victoria’s reign, great swathes of Hove’s fields lay buried

During her 63-year reign, Hove had experienced a remarkable expansion from miniscule village - infamous for its grisly pursuits of bullfighting, the gibbeting of highwaymen, smuggling and brutal Napoleonic War army camps - into a genteel, flourishing Victorian new town.

39 Fantastic local charity Time To Talk Befriending are in need of volunteers…

Time To Talk Befriending Although the telephone cannot replace face to face human interaction which most of us crave and need, it has been quite literally a lifeline for many during the pandemic.

The beneficiaries of our service are people mostly in their 80+ years, and who have a rich life history to share, yet many feel hidden behind the four walls of their homes which is why befriending is such a lifeline. Barriers relating to age are broken down as we connect volunteers spanning across the generations, which proves time and again to be mutually rewarding. We only have to read the reviews to know that volunteers get a lot out of the 30-45 minutes a week they give to befriending. But don’t take our word for it! Here are a few quotes from volunteers who share what befriending means to them:

GENERAL

It is amazing to witness the dual benefits of befriending once we have connected two like-minded people together. As a result, we’ve heard many older people say how they ‘want to live again’ and that they now have ‘purpose and no longer feel invisible’ which is a far cry from ‘not wanting to be here anymore’, something we sadly hear far too often.

As a charity we are motivated to provide support for people in their senior years, helping to create a sense of belonging through personalised befriending interventions. So, whilst befriending currently continues to be mostly over the phone or through postal contact, thanks to the wonderful kindness of community volunteers we have been fortunate to see large numbers of new and existing be-friendships blossom. having a conversation and talking about her life makes me feel proud to be part of the charity.” Nicola. “It’s an opportunity to give something back to the community.” Jos. “It’s really interesting...hearing different perspectives and sharing common interests.” Paul. “An amazing, rewarding and beautiful experience...our time together is precious. The whole journey since joining the charity has been wonderful. I would recommend it to everyone!” Claire. Could you help make a difference? Even if you cannot commit to once a week, a fortnightly call can mean a lot to someone who is experiencing loneliness. Visit our website to find out more: www.tttb.org.uk/volunteers. Emily Kenward

The Peace Statue Crowds on 12 October 1912 at the unveiling of the Brighton & Hove Memorial to King Edward VII, who died in 1910.

GENERAL

The memorial, now known as the Peace Statue, was sculpted by Newbury Trent and is located on the seafront border between Brighton & Hove. Edward VII was known as “The Peacemaker” for encouraging good relations with some other European countries and the statue is of an angel carrying an olive branch and standing on a globe.

43 Brighton & Hove has won the first Gold Sustainable Food Places Award in the UK…

City wins gold award Brighton & Hove has become the first in the UK to win a Gold Sustainable Food Places Award from Sustainable Food Places. The award recognises the city’s outstanding achievements on a range of key food issues and most recently on tackling food poverty during the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s testament to a number of city-wide food projects, businesses, community and voluntary groups, individuals and departments of the local authority striving to enshrine sustainable practices.

The coordination of projects within the city has led to Brighton & Hove being a hive of sustainability and good food work...

45 This group of local dads are having great fun…

Outta Puff Daddys Founded in 2012 and based in Brighton, the Outta Puff Daddys are a dads-only street dance crew - a group of dads all aged 40+ that for the past eight years have met at Brighton Marina Studios almost every week to craft their own unique approach to dad dancing!

As a group of men, their camaraderie and friendship go far beyond just dancing – supporting each other through various personal tragedies and challenges, they now use their profile to actively promote men’s mental health and prostate cancer awareness. Encouraging men to be far more open and honest about their physical and mental health is very important to them. There is a stigma that suggests men are weak if they talk about their mental health, assuming that no one will listen or take them seriously. They say, “This could not be further from the truth; you’ll be amazed who’s happy to listen. We are all stronger together.” They have appeared on the BBC, ITV and more recently embraced the world of TikTok! With over 20k TikTok followers and one of their recent videos amassing over 900k views, they don’t intend to stop there with loads of exciting plans for 2021.

GENERAL

Originally choreographed by JP Omari, they are now led by the crew’s co-founder, Paul Jukes. They are all about having fun, never taking themselves too seriously and over the years have performed in front of thousands at various shows and events across Sussex. They dedicate many hours of rehearsal time to their routines, which nearly always play on the ‘dad dancing’ stereotype lifting the spirits of their audience.

Homebase car park!! They would like to take this opportunity to thank Brighton Marina Studios for all their incredible support which has included implementing many Covid precautions, ensuring the safety of all those that use the fantastic dance studios. The Outta Puff Daddys would encourage you to join the OPD journey. Follow, like and share them on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, helping to spread their positive message. For media, performance or sponsorship opportunities please contact them directly via any of their social media accounts. Dad dancing has never looked so good!

During the pandemic they have always continued to dance as this has been vital for their own mental health in these challenging times. This has been via Zoom and in various outdoor spaces including their favourite (and now TikTok famous) Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

Memories of Brighton Past

GENERAL

At Home Instead Brighton, Hove & Shoreham, our CAREGivers provide companionship and spend quality time with the elderly in our community. Often our clients tell us interesting stories from Brighton past…

Jean enjoying a trishaw ride with Pedal People

We thought we would share some from our client Jean Novis (93) who has lived in Brighton all her life and experienced World War II as a young girl. Jean was at the intermediate school on London Road, York Place, when the war first started. She remembers preparation sirens going off, so residents were ready for the real ones. Jean would say goodbye to her father on the platform at Brighton station. She laughs, “The train would start moving and I would run along the platform holding his hand through the window and I would say ‘I’m running out of platform!’. It was funny but very sad at the time as I didn’t know if I’d ever see him again.” After the war began, Jean’s school was bombed, and two teachers were killed. She was never evacuated as she didn’t want to leave her mother at home, but Brighton was a dangerous place to be living. Bombs would be dropped off along the coast rather than be taken back overseas. Jean remembers when they hit the gasholder at Black Rock, sending huge

Brighton ice rink in West Street

flames more than 300 feet into the sky, and Western Road was hit tremendously. Jean remembers having ration cards. Due to the lack of food and necessities they had to eat what they could...one lady even used to sell horse meat in Kensington Gardens! However, Jean still has fond memories of the ice rink in the war, which was once along West Street (now the Odeon). It was the only ice rink along the south coast at the time. The allied troops from Canada and America who were in Brighton would visit the ice rink and hold hands with the children and women, guiding them round. Everyone found it very sad when they all had to go home to their own countries. The day the war ended people were out on the streets of the city dancing and singing - there was a blackout, but everyone was happy! 49 Healthy living advice from Mary Henderson, a doctoral researcher in gut health…

Ten tips to kickstart your 2021! I don’t know about you, but after the year we’ve had, I’m so ready for 2021! Here’s some tips for health and self-care to kickstart your new year. Get outdoors.

Hydrate.

Daylight hours (11am-3pm) if you can but even after dark will give you time out from your screen, busyness and boost your mood.

The closest thing you can get to a ‘detox’ is to not put so many ‘toxins’ in to start with. Avoid sweetened drinks which play havoc with your blood glucose and hunger signals, including smoothies and those artificially sweetened.

Our body functions around natural cycles. In fact, every single cell has a clock so it makes sense to work with this. For example, having three squares meals a day in line with your body’s digestion timings is better for your metabolism. We are most ‘ready’ for food before 12pm and less so as we approach bedtime. Rest. Sleep is the time your brain cleanses itself and processes the thoughts of the day. Your body is resting and repairing. It supports good mental health. If you can’t sleep, then rest or read, but don’t stress. Gentle exercise can help reset the body and make it easier to sleep the next night. Try new foods.

Eat better. More good fats for the body and brain. Less saturated fat including coconut oil. More fruit and veg. More wholegrains full of B vitamins for brimming energy levels. Get some ‘me time’ if you can. A hot bath. A run. A good book. A good album. Mindfulness. All humans have a natural tendency to spot negatives. Mindful practice improves our thinking skills and helps us to feel ok, whatever life throws at us. New research also suggests that this may improve how our bodies function. Worth checking out.

Food is to be enjoyed even if you’re trying to shift excess lockdown and Christmas pounds. There’s tons of delicious healthy foods to choose from. Try a new healthier recipe a week. Set yourself a new year challenge. Work your way through a book series. Go vegan for a month. Learn a new craft. Do a Strava monthly 50k walking challenge. Tell people about it if that works for you. If it doesn’t, don’t. Get active. Walking counts. Little but often is better than lots once a month. Discover new local routes. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

51 Hove sleep consultant Paddy Foley has advice on children’s sleep issues…

Accidental sleep consultant One of my favourite tunes is “The Sun Rising” by The Beloved. The sun rising was less fun when viewed from my daughter’s bedroom floor after a sleepless night!

Most of them have the ability to sleep well; it’s up to us to give them the tools to achieve this. It’s good to look at the causes for any sleep issues. I like to call it the fundamentals, such as wake windows. Are they overtired before they go down for a nap? Having the afternoon nap too late can cause problems when they go down in the evening. Have they built up enough sleep pressure? Looking at the sleep environment, is the room dark enough? Do they nap on the go or at home? A tip from me: if possible, a nap in their cot will give them a much more restorative sleep. It’s not about putting them in a room and letting them cry for hours but looking for the reason they may be upset. Nothing prepares you for the sleep deprivation as a first-time parent, or even a multiple parent. Sometimes you can have

one child that sleeps well and another not so well. Most of them have the ability to sleep well; it’s up to us to give them the tools to achieve this. Sticking to a routine and staying consistent goes a long way towards reaching this goal. In my experience, my daughter tended to be in a much better mood after a good sleep! Also, we were in a much better mood on account of us getting a good night’s sleep as well. One of the good things about taking a couple of years off was meeting other parents and chatting about our various sleep issues. It’s one of the reasons I trained to become a sleep consultant. One thing I will say is share the burden if you can. It gives yourself or your partner a well-deserved rest. Healthy sleep is great for all of the family. paddy@sleepylambs.com Facebook: @paddyfoleysleep

53 News from the council…

A new online app service aims to collect 10,000 unwanted electrical items and provide at least 500 reused electricals to residents within the first year of operation. City residents now have a free and easy way to dispose of unwanted electrical items like laptops, mobile phones and small appliances while helping charities and the environment.

A new service – the first of its kind in the country – has been set up in Brighton & Hove A new service – the first of its kind in the country – has been set up in Brighton & Hove where people can book online through a special app and have their items collected from their doorstep. Goods that are working or can be refurbished will be donated to charity. Anything that can’t be saved will be recycled responsibly. Importantly, people can be reassured that any items with personal information stored on them will have the data completely wiped by professional security experts.

Dispose of batteries responsibly The council are calling on residents and businesses to dispose of old, unwanted or dead batteries responsibly. Batteries that are thrown into ordinary bins, household waste or mixed with other recycling are extremely dangerous as they can explode and cause fires. Instead, old, unwanted and dead batteries should be taken to Household Waste Recycling Sites (off Wilson Road in Brighton and off Old Shoreham Road in Hove) or dropped off at one of the many battery recycling points throughout the city, including many local supermarkets. The council doesn’t collect batteries, so you can find your nearest recycling location at recyclenow.com by entering your postcode, town or city.

A survey carried out last year by environmental charity WRAP found Just download The ZeroNet app at nearly a quarter of UK households www.thezeronet.com or from the Tech-Takeback admitted to throwing used batwebsite at www.techtakeback.com and book a col- teries in the rubbish bin instead of lection appointment. A full list of the items collected recycling them correctly. Figures can be viewed at by the Environmental Services Aswww.techtakeback.com/ sociation show that in just one year, revaluelectricals_accepteditems.html between April 2019 and March 2020, almost 260 fires were started by batteries in recycling or waste management facilities in the UK after people didn’t recycle properly. You can also help by using rechargeable batteries where possible. Have a local editorial item? Email info@brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

55 News from the council of a new film to improve road safety among young drivers…

Keep your Mind in Gear Road safety in young drivers is not good and Brighton & Hove City Council and the NHS decided to see if a short film could help by introducing mindfulness in a simple film. Keep your Mind in Gear is a short film produced as a partnership between the Road Safety Department of Brighton & Hove City Council and Sussex Mindfulness Centre.

• Failure to look properly/emotional/ physical distraction is the largest collision factor for young drivers in Sussex and nationwide. • Research suggests that mindful driving can improve driver awareness and increase driver safety. We produced a film to be shown to young people, within driver awareness courses and within schools and colleges, to get the message across to young people to be less distracted when behind the wheel. The aim is to introduce mindfulness to drivers in order to give them a tool to ensure that they are able to fully engage with the road environment when they are driving. Key issues covered in the film are distraction – mobile phone/passenger/music/emotional (remembering an argument with partner) – and also road

Residents in Brighton & Hove are being asked to contribute to an exciting plan to improve and develop council sports facilities across the city.

Many more people are likely to be struggling to pay their fuel bills and keep their homes warm this year.

Brighton & Hove City Council are currently developing a Sports Facilities Investment Plan to provide good quality, accessible, sustainable facilities and services into the future. The plan aims to encourage increased participation in sport and physical activity and improve the health and wellbeing of residents across the city.

59 There is now a single point of contact for anyone in the city affected by dementia…

Dementia support Anyone in Brighton & Hove affected by dementia can now access support via Ageing Well to find ways to increase their overall wellbeing. Through the Ageing Well’s Single Point of Contact (SPOC) telephone service, people living with dementia and those caring for them can now find out what organisations and activities in the city best meet their needs and preferences.

People in the early stages of dementia can contact Ageing Well, who have developed innovative ways of delivering services, providing much needed social support and activities to some of the most isolated and vulnerable people in the city. Depending on the personal needs and wishes of the individual, Ageing Well services will signpost people to dementia-friendly services and activities. Activities include gardening and cookery courses, music and singing sessions, befriending services and peer support group sessions. Ageing Well continues to offer the dementia-focused weekly activities and Cognitive Stimulation Therapy courses will soon be offered. There will also be opportunity to enjoy music sessions led by new partner Open Strings Music. “Our collaborative working model under Ageing Well enables us to provide a range of options to choose from, whether that be social activities, peer support or more therapeutic-based options. 61 News from the council…

Help people in need on our streets this winter... This year hundreds of vulnerable people were brought in from the streets where they were rough sleeping to be given shelter during the pandemic.

Charities and organisations across Brighton & Hove continue to work with people to help them find a permanent solution to their homelessness. The city’s Make Change Count campaign has played a part in this and urgently needs your support to help people this winter. While rooms have been found for anyone who is sleeping rough to help them have a safe space to follow the stay-at-home guidance, the familiarity of friends has been limited by the physical distancing rules. People need help and support to adapt to living in new ways. The Make Change Count campaign links local organisations which are experienced in supporting rough sleepers and preventing homelessness. The participating organisations are: BHT, St Mungo’s, Sussex Nightstop, Equinox, Antifreeze, The Clock Tower Sanctuary, YMCA Downslink Group, Umbrella Brighton & Hove and YMCA Brighton. These organisations, like many in the city, are currently working during the Coronavirus crisis to provide connections into services and help people meet their basic needs. Sadly, the council are also aware that some people are still sleeping rough in the city.

GENERAL

Throughout the Covid crisis, the council have worked with health and community sector partners in the city to provide safe, self-contained accommodation for people who were sleeping rough. Looking after people in need has been a priority and everyone who needs it is being provided with food and support.

Some of these are people newly arrived in the city, a few people have refused accommodation, and some have left the Covid-19 accommodation they were in. Council outreach workers are out on the frontline seven days a week as well as providing essential help behind the scenes. Supporting Make Change Count helps with this vital work. Contributions are used to provide food, access to shower facilities, healthcare, clothing and a wide range of practical help based on individual needs. This can be life-changing and lifesaving. Fundraising activities have been hit by the pandemic and donations are lower than in previous years. It’s quick and easy to donate online at: justgiving.com/campaign/MakeChangeCount2020 Let Streetlink know if you see anyone in need living on the streets so tailored help can be offered (streetlink.org.uk).
