Friends of Stoneham Park When the pandemic started, few of us could have believed that 15 months later we would still be under some sort of public health restrictions. It seems amazing to believe that the coronavirus pandemic could still be with us as we enter our second summer with the disease. The fact is that the four-week delay in the removal of the last of the restrictions means that we have had to postpone our summer fair. We had hoped that the date of 17 July gave us enough time after the scheduled ending of restrictions on 21 June to build in a buffer if things were delayed slightly. But, with cruel timing, the unlocking date is a mere two days afterwards! We are hopeful that we can find another date, possibly in September, when we can host the summer fair. Please keep a look out on our website (www.friendsofstonehampark.uk) and our social media pages for more information.

Meanwhile, life goes on for the Friends of Stoneham Park in other ways. We have yet another fabulous mural from Fek to replace the very popular Harry Potter. This one depicts Batman and the green-haired Joker locked in mortal (or, perhaps, mildly mortal) combat and follows the nice tradition of comic book characters being painted there. Please pop down and take a look next time you are in the area. We are pleased to report that the weekend litter problem has been mitigated substantially by the park now having its litter bins emptied over the weekend. We had asked for extra bins, which the council said we would get. Our wishes were not granted, but weekend refuse collections seem to have had an equally beneficial effect. We hope that the scenes of bins overflowing with rubbish on a Saturday afternoon have been banished to the…bin! If you couldn’t commit to getting involved with our summer fair this month, but might be available and willing to help out at a future date, please drop us a line at events@friendsofstonehampark.uk. Meet a Poets Corner resident who can help you look stylish…
Poets Person…Michelle Barrett Michelle Barrett lives in Poets Corner. She has been a personal stylist for 21 years, working with many well-known people. How did you become a personal stylist? Just before I graduated from The London College of Fashion in 2000, I got a job working with Boyzone and Enrique Iglesias at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party and Miss World. I knew from there onwards that that was the job I wanted to do. What does a personal stylist do? It depends on the job. When I am working with a celebrity there might be a brief to work to. When I was working with Katy Perry there was a look of the tour or set that I had to work to. It is similar when working with an actor. Dressing a presenter is often similar to taking on a private client. With a private client I offer several different packages. All of them include a colour analysis which is a guide to colours that best compliment your skin, hair and eyes. I also include a body shape guide which identifies the client’s body shape and informs them of styles that will suit them. Finally, we do an online wardrobe edit and go through their clothes and remove anything that does not work. I also offer personal shopping which includes a Look-book of clothes I suggest they consider adding to their wardrobe. I have packages for men and women. Which famous people have you worked with? Too many, haha! I have worked with everyone from Katy Perry to Jerry Springer and Renée Zellweger to Michael McIntyre through film, TV, theatre and editorial.
the same. It means that clothes mix and match together seamlessly. I don’t tend to follow trends which might seem odd for a stylist, but I think timeless looks suited to you, your lifestyle, environment and personality work best. What is your top tip for looking stylish? Avoid extreme trends. Learn what suits your colouring and body shape, and when something works, repeat it. Try out new styles, but be honest with yourself. Don’t just buy something because it is ‘in’. It will never feel good. Define your own style rather than following someone else’s look. For more information, visit capsuleclosetstylist.com or email michelle@capsuleclosetstylist.com.
What is your own personal style? Capsule. My wardrobe consists of around seven colours. I encourage clients to do To advertise to 3000 POETS CORNER homes and 12,000 across HOVE visit www.brightonandhovemagazines.co.uk

10 A Poets Corner resident tells us about her first novel…
Local author…Sue Teddern Sue Teddern lives in Poets Corner. She is a TV and radio scriptwriter whose credits include Birds of a Feather and The Archers. Her first novel, Annie Stanley All At Sea, is published on 8 July. Tell us more about Annie Stanley All At Sea… Annie is an unfulfilled, out-of-work teacher. When her father dies and his new partner wants to scatter the ashes somewhere that Annie doesn’t feel represents his life, she steals the urn and takes it on a tour of the sea areas of the Shipping Forecast, which her dad loved. En route, she reconnects with people from her past and learns to look to the future. That makes it sound quite serious. And, at times, it is. But, because of my comedy background, I’d like to think it also has its funny moments. Why did you decide to write your first novel, after many years of being a scriptwriter? I wanted to see if I could do it. In many ways, it’s a similar process: planning, structure, creating strong characters and believable dialogue. Annie is on a journey, both literally and emotionally, so the structure came quite easily. I have a map of the Shipping Forecast regions on the wall by my desk and I always knew who Annie would encounter in Cromarty, Tyne, Portland and Fair Isle. Does Brighton & Hove feature in the book? Yes, in the sea area Wight chapter. Annie is a graduate of Sussex Uni and bumps into an old flame when she stops off in Brighton. They spend the day together; visiting the Rampion wind farm, hanging out on the pier. I visited so many places, while researching the book, but that really wasn’t necessary for the Brighton chapter. Are you planning any more novels? My second novel is already written and will be published in 2022. It’s called The
Pre-Loved Club and is set in Brighton and Hove; Ned lives in Poets Corner and Gemma lives in Bevendean. They are both single parents, after being dumped by their partners, and become friends, hence the title. Who are your own favourite writers? One Day by David Nicholls made a huge impression on me. I also love Maggie O’Farrell, Anne Tyler and Patrick Hamilton, who has a Brighton and Hove bus named after him. Annie Stanley All At Sea is published by Mantle/Pan Macmillan and is available from online retailers and bookshops.

The Hove Station Neighbourhood Plan includes the Stoneham area of Poets Corner…
Hove Station Neighbourhood Plan Residents are being given the chance to give their views on the latest Hove Station Neighbourhood Plan. The draft has been prepared by the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum and submitted to the council along with supporting documents. The council is now required to publish them for consultation before they’re submitted to an independent examiner.
How the Conway Street area could be improved (looking south from Conway Place)
What is a Neighbourhood Forum? Neighbourhood planning is a way for local people to take a lead in planning the future of their area. It can be led by a parish council or by a neighbourhood forum set up for the purpose. Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum was formally designated by the council in 2014 and is the first local group in the city to reach the stage of submitting its neighbourhood plan to the council. The Forum undertook a public consultation on the plan in 2019 and has since made some amendments in response to comments. What’s the plan? The Neighbourhood Plan sets an overall aim “to facilitate the regeneration of the Hove Station Neighbourhood Area in a way which realises its potential by creating a vibrant and inclusive community, focused on a new Hove Station Quarter, as a great place to live, work and relax”. It includes positive policies to ensure that planned regeneration delivers improved local facilities and creates a greener and more attractive environment. What happens next? When this current consultation is completed, the council will submit the draft plan and all responses received to the
examiner who will consider if the plan meets all the statutory requirements. The council will then decide whether to put the neighbourhood plan to a local referendum. If approved at referendum, the neighbourhood plan will be formally ‘made’, and the policies used to help decide the outcome of planning applications in the area. Councillor Marianna Ebel, Deputy Chair of Tourism, Equalities, Communities and Culture Committee, said: “I’m so pleased the hard work of the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum is coming to fruition and would urge as many people as possible to respond and give their views during the consultation period.” You can read more about the plan on the council’s webpage (brighton-hove.gov.uk/ content/planning/neighbourhood-planning/hove-station-neighbourhood-plan). You can find the consultation at: consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/planning/ hove-station-neighbourhood-plan-submission/ The consultation ends on Thursday 15 July.

It feels like summer is finally here, so we hope you are benefiting from time outdoors. We all deserve some beach time and if you get to our lovely Western Esplanade we hope you benefit from the extra bins, extra toilets and lifeguarding stations. It’s going to be very busy with staycations this summer, so we hope our local businesses benefit whilst the area can be respected and kept litter free. Fingers crossed. We have had a lot of reports of scams over the last three months and we’re very worried that they are not just online, and ‘get-richquick’ schemes, but also fake parking attendants and doorstepping. Anyone can fall victim and people of all ages and backgrounds get scammed so pleased stay alert. If you need advice and support please contact Citizens Advice. We are also very keen to keep our neighbourhood a crime and anti-social behaviour free zone, so it was great to meet more residents who are setting up Neighbourhood Watch schemes. Sharon (pictured left) is the latest resident to get active with her neighbours. We enjoyed a stroll around Poets Corner with her and your local PCSO, Aidan, and Tracy who has become the local expert in Neighbourhood Watch. allow Pedal People to cycle their elderly residents along the area and also to help wheelchairs, electric wheelchairs and pushchairs to navigate the area more easily. We think it also makes the area look more friendly and nicer to walk around, so we hope you agree. Finally, we continue to work on improvements to the Western Esplanade and we hope that you will be contacted over summer by the council for your opinion. Hopefully landscaping improvements will start by the end of the year. Meanwhile, enjoy your summer and be safe on our beach and parks. Rockwater shacks to remain for six months Rockwater beach bar, on the Western Esplanade, have received permission to retain their six timber beach-hut style kiosks, or shacks, for another six months (from the date of the planning permission), on condition that they are removed by the end of that period. The shacks are used to sell food and drinks and were introduced during Covid-19 restrictions, while the main building was being refurbished and extended. The shacks are not considered suitable as a permanent form of development. A council report said: “As a permanent addition they would not be considered acceptable given their scale and design, and they would result in visual clutter to the area and add to the sprawl of the main site given the significant extensions that have already been consented.” Rockwater have also been told to paint the shacks in the same colour as the adjacent beach huts.
report said: “A promenade space of 5.5 metres is considered sufficient to successfully accommodate any queues and allow people to pass by.”
The council’s Planning Committee, meeting on 9 June, unanimously approved the Eleven objections to the application were retention of the shacks for a further six received. Well, what a few months we have had down at the Lagoon! The pools are full, the businesses are fully open and busy, hordes of personal trainers have taken to the area like ducks to water (forgive the pun) and the grass is growing (too long for some and lovely for others.) Oh, and by the way the Planting Scheme, designed by Nick Dexter, funded by Rampion Wind Farm, West Hove Forum, the Council and LagoonFest sponsors, and project-managed by volunteers Chris Flint and Tom Stear, has finally arrived! Garden contractors Dan Boorman and Milo Foster-Prior and a group of dedicated volunteers – including Brighton College students - have planted and watered 1,000 grasses and perennials in two borders by the pavilions. Many thanks to The Gather Inn, Lagoon Watersports and Hove Deep Sea Anglers who provided us with water. We are all so chuffed! If you would like to help with the watering and maintenance, please let us know. Our other big project is LagoonFest 2021 on 4th September (Covid restrictions willing). We are well underway with our preparations and are really looking forward to welcoming families and friends to Hove Lagoon for a wonderful day out – particularly this year. In addition to our usual LagoonFest activities, we will be hosting a Talk Tent with a variety of speakers throughout the day. We need more volunteers, so please contact us if you would like to join the LagoonFest crew. Also, we need prizes for the tombola and raffle and the loan of tents and gazebos. We will provide more details about the event in the coming months. The FoHL Committee has established a Projects work stream led by Paul Hirchfield, our Assistant Secretary. The aim is to identify projects which will improve the
Lagoon’s infrastructure and landscape. Examples are a water fountain by the café, FoHL notice boards, improved public toilets and shade for the paddling pool. Some of these will be funded from any LagoonFest profits and others will be lobbied for. Any ideas gratefully received. Unfortunately, we have recently experienced some vandalism at the public toilets, the Big Beach Café and LagoonFunPlay, but a combination of CCTV footage, social media publicity and swift action from the local police led to the young perpetrators being identified and charged. They are now doing community service at the Lagoon and elsewhere. 21 An update from your Local Action Team…
Seafront Landscaping Plan Landscape architects Untitled Practice have been appointed by the council to work on a landscape design covering the Western Lawns, from the King Alfred Leisure Centre to Hove Lagoon. Untitled Practice have also worked with the council on the Valley Gardens design in Brighton. A virtual inception meeting was held in May to which representatives of the West Hove Seafront Action Group (WHSAG) and ward councillors were invited. The landscape design is intended to form a cohesive plan for this stretch of Hove Lawns, to avoid piecemeal development. There could be a new path along the whole stretch, linking the seafront to the green spaces. The architects will also look at providing more shelter, shade and seating. The design will cover only the lawns and not the esplanade. It could be financed through S106 developer contributions and it must be cost-neutral to the council’s maintenance budget. Any plants will need to be able to withstand sea storms and salt. The design will include recreational, cultural and mindful activities. A West Hove seafront improvement plan is also being drawn up to repurpose the pitch and putt greens and possibly some of the fallow bowling greens. This will be
led by council officers. There has been no decision on the use of any of these spaces and no business bids are currently being considered. Community views will be sought through an initial questionnaire, followed by a focus group and a public consultation. A planning application could be submitted in September. Street Trees Hove Civic Society are asking for an amendment to the City Plan, to say that one new tree should be planted for each new dwelling to mitigate substantial CO2 emissions through the construction and occupation of new buildings. Hove Civic Society are very worried about the reduction in the number of trees because of disease and the decrease in resources. They fear that, as trees are not being replaced, Hove will look terrible in 50 years’ time unless we do something now. The West Hove Forum has agreed to support this proposed amendment. West Hove Forum meetings are attended by ward councillors and a wide range of community representatives. The next meeting of the West Hove Forum will be on Wednesday 21st July at 2pm, via Zoom. If you would like to attend on behalf of a group or business, please email westhoveforum@gmail.com. Part of the Western Lawns

23 A new group based at Rockwater…
Have you spent way too much time at home over the past year? Struggled to work amid constant interruptions? Engaged in a battle of wills with the biscuit tin, only for the tin to win? Congratulations - you have 50% of the skills necessary to be an author! Have another biscuit. Rather like lockdown, writing is a solitary business. But a dynamic writing group can inspire and encourage. Certainly, without my fellow writers acting as colleagues and cheer-leaders, I would not be published today. So when I moved to Hove a year ago, I longed to find my way into a writers group. Instead, I suggested the idea to the Events team at Rockwater and Hove Writers was born. Looking back over the years, I can see ten ways that writers groups have helped me to finish my novels and get them published.
9. I wrote every week because it was embarrassing to turn up and admit that I’d done nothing
1.
I learnt to write (and how not to write) by critiquing other people’s extracts
2.
Reading aloud showed me which lines sing and which strike bum notes
10. And I realised that authors are everyday people who work diligently towards an achievable goal.
3.
I found trusted readers to wade through chapters when I’d read them so many times they looked like a bowl of Alphabetti Spaghetti
So Hove Writers meet on Monday evenings in a beautiful space at Rockwater which, crucially, has a bar.
First, we have Power Hour involving workshops, guest authors, exercises for 4. The hive mind—a friend from a writers inspiration. Then we Shut Up and Write, a two-hour, uninterrupted stretch of time group even put me in touch with my dedicated to writing. It’s motivating to literary agent work alongside other engaged writers— 5. Fellow authors understand the stranger aspects of writing fiction (the the productivity spreads! 25 Meet a local resident…
Hove Park person…Alex Webster Alex Webster grew up close to Hove Park. He studied musical theatre and spent 15 years living and performing in America. After moving into the real estate profession in the United States and building up a successful business, he has now returned to his Hove Park roots and is an estate agent at Marchants Hove in Queen Victoria Avenue. HOVE PARK
What was the highlight of your musical theatre career? I got to perform in many shows but joining vocal group The 12 Tenors I toured all over the world performing in many amazing countries. This I feel was the highlight for me and is what originally took me to America. How did you come to move into real estate? My father worked in overseas properties selling homes in Spain, so it’s always been around me. After I left the performing world it felt like a logical step for me, and a good friend who was a realtor put in a good word for me with his company and the rest was history. Why did you decide to move back to Hove Park? It’s where I grew up, I love the area and wanted my children to experience it also. Our office is located close by and it feels like I have come home! Does estate agency differ a lot between the two countries? Yes! It’s the same product at the end of the day but the process is very different. You can represent a seller and a buyer in America. You can work just with a buyer and show them any property whether it’s your instruction or not. Kind of like a property finder here in the UK. You deal a lot more with the legal side and contracts are signed from day one. You also have to pass a very lengthy licence exam to qualify to do the job!
You are also a TV and radio host. Tell us about that… So before moving to America I had worked in some TV and radio and always had a passion to go into it in some way. After I decided to finish my theatre career I was offered an opportunity with a mainstream radio station in America hosting their evening show. The same company then asked me to be a TV presenter for them, on a show called TVC Golf. We got to interview top golfers such as Bernhard Langer and Phil Mickelson and play on some of the most beautiful courses. It was a big success and they then asked me to present a show based around property. For more information, contact Alex at Marchants Estate Agents Hove; 01273 541177; 07859 734944 or alex@marchants.org

27 News from Conservative councillor for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen…
ZONE P I am not pleased with how it’s been handled by the council administration. It is a mystery how the council will respond to the consultation that happened at the end of 2020. Some of you will have also had issues renewing your Zone P permits. This comes in spite of an email from parking officers to councillors on 30 April informing us that a new system will be easier to navigate. NETWORK RAIL Might close a lane on the Old Shoreham Road for a few weeks from August. Watch this space! COUNCIL MEETINGS We currently have an interim arrangement regarding reducing numbers in attendance. What this means is that opportunities for being part of the decision-making processes, even on the committees I sit on, like transport, have been taken away from us. I am fighting hard to get this decision reversed but the administration and officers are resisting. I am also pushing to delay a special transport meeting later this month where the Old Shoreham Road consultation outcomes will be decided – with reduced councillor attendance. SACKVILLE TRADING ESTATE Midgard are the construction partner. The project’s Community Liaison Manager is Matthew White 07909 744 088 / matthew.white@ midgard.ltd.uk and the project manager is Scott Marsden 07741150649 / scott.marsden@midgard.ltd.uk. There have been attempts to use s106 monies to connect the estate to the other side of the railway. I believe this money is best used in our parks in the ward on top of the investment we have already secured - covered elsewhere in this month’s Hovarian.
ALDRINGTON TUNNEL Council transport officers removed the barriers at the entrances to the tunnel and replaced them with bollards without informing local councillors. We’ve had complaints so please write in with your thoughts. The council is replacing the ‘cycling is prohibited’ signs with ‘share the space’ ones. This change was brought in to help disabled people on bikes navigate the tunnel but it looks like it is putting pedestrians at greater risk. Officers have dismissed local residents’ objections to a bike share hub at the north side. SHIRLEY DRIVE I’d been assured that the police would run speed checks on Shirley Drive but I am not aware that this has happened. This and other roads are officially residential streets but feel like unofficial B roads. We have gathered intel on accidents etc and will seek experimental traffic regulations. Do please reach out if you want a copy of the data. Councillor Professor Samer Bagaeen

Upgrade for Hove Park’s playground
HOVE PARK
The children’s play area in Hove Park is having a fantastic £142,000 upgrade. Hove Park playground will soon have a host of new equipment including a double castle multi-play unit; a castle battering ram; new swings and slides; a fairy-tale toddler section and a net climbing frame.
There will also be new paths, surfaces and a picnic area with tables and chairs installed. Access for all children The park will have improved access, and all the new play equipment will be fully accessible for all children, including youngsters with disabilities. The majority of the current play area and equipment is being replaced due to its age plus wear and tear. But some equipment, including the climbing pole and bucket swing, will remain and stay open for play during the refurbishment. These items will also be replaced in the next couple of years.
‘New equipment in place for summer’ Councillor Amy Heley, chair of the council’s Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee, said: “Hove Park is much loved and very well used by local residents and people throughout the city. The playground is always a busy and exciting place to be for children of all ages. However, some of the play equipment is coming to the end of its life and must be replaced. It will mean the closure of most of the play area for around four weeks, but this will ensure the brand new equipment is in place well before the school summer holidays.”
Playground manufacturer Kompan was chosen to supply and build the park The area being developed has been after winning a tendering process. The cordoned off with no public access during playground’s refurbishment is part of the the work, which was due to start on 7 June council’s £3 million plan to upgrade 45 and take around four weeks to complete. play park areas over the next three years. 31 News from the Friends of Hove Park…
New starts... The old equipment which stayed open during the refurbishment will remain but is intended to be replaced in the next couple of years. The work which started on Monday 7 June is progressing well and will hopefully be completed by the time you read this. Some of the new equipment being installed can be seen in the photos. The Friends are planning to restart some of their activities and have already held a successful litter pick in May. A further litter pick is scheduled for July and there are plans for a monthly gardening session to help look after designated areas of the park. And finally what about this webbing festooning leaves on a tree in the children’s playground! At the edge of the web a silken thread runs down to the ground with small caterpillars dotted at intervals along it. Are these ermine moth caterpillars like those responsible for the temporary ghostly veil blanketing trees elsewhere in the country?

33 Lockdown has been challenging for Viva Vinyl…
Local business: Viva Vinyl Viva Vinyl is a record store and café in Queen Victoria Avenue near Hove Park. We spoke to the maître d’, Julie Rosehill… Challenging! The record store has been closed for all three lockdowns and the café has only been able to serve takeaways. As you can imagine this has greatly diminished our revenue. To compound things, in the height of the last lockdown, the inspiration behind Viva Vinyl, Brian Rosehill, suddenly passed away after a 30-year battle with Parkinson’s disease. However, fortunately he used lockdown to replenish the vinyl shelves and so we are now back and raring to go with thousands of new records. Have you made any changes to the business? We’ve taken the downtime to redecorate so you’ll notice a rather garish pink exterior, new shelving for the vinyl, and more comfortable chairs. What sort of food do you offer? We haven’t reinvented the wheel at Viva Vinyl. We serve traditional, hearty café food like sandwiches, all day breakfasts and cakes. Fridays are quite special as we offer speciality salt beef sandwiches but we have exciting plans ahead. On July 18th we will be hosting a New York style deli brunch with chicken soup, Mediterranean style salads, salt beef, bagels and lots of sweet treats, and this will hopefully become a monthly occurrence. Furthermore, as lockdown restrictions come to an end, we will finally be bringing back our themed pop-up nights, catered by our fantastic head chef Julien. What sort of stock do you have? In the record store we have a selection of over 10,000 vinyl records ranging from
HOVE PARK
How has the lockdown been for Viva Vinyl?
60s, psych and progressive, to folk, rock and blues. Trust me, if you’re a keen collector or just fancy a touch of nostalgia we’ve got something for you. We also stock CDs, DVDs and books for those that prefer something they can touch, rather than streaming from your phone. Do you buy/source records? As well as selling records we also value and purchase collections and are always on the lookout for new stock. And if there’s a particular title you’re on the lookout for, trust us, we can find it for you, no matter how rare! Any closing comments? Lockdown has been really hard and while we know how easy it is to buy records online, there is no substitute for the record shop experience. Please support us and all local business to keep your community thriving. Look forward to welcoming customers again, both old and new! Viva Vinyl is at 63 Queen Victoria Avenue, Hove BN3 6XA. 35 Scott Burey tells us about a new place in Hove to meet up…
Kingsway Coffee...
When you think about it, the word Coffee means SOOOO much more to people than just a drink. When someone says ‘Do you want to go for a coffee?’, they mean do you want to meet up and chat and get away for a few moments in the day. And that’s what Kingsway Coffee is - a happy, warm, inviting place for everybody, for people to meet, work and socialise. Although we are focusing on making the best coffee experience possible, we will have much more to offer too - a very exciting selection of teas, and the most delicious selection of cakes and food - all sourced locally. What can we expect from this new venture? We’ve got some exciting plans for the future! It’s going to focus on the best of local produce and talent, and embrace that community spirit we feel has somewhat been lost over time. It’s being run by myself and Darren, my partner for 20 odd years, and when I say odd, that doesn’t mean I can’t remember the exact time we’ve been together, it just means they’ve been odd. And we want to have lots of fun! We want everyone that comes in to have lots of fun too! We want people to come in, have time out, and hopefully leave with a smile on their face to carry through for the rest of their day. I’ve been performing in drag for the past 20 years, and I want to bring that air of cheekiness with me to the coffee shop, minus the high heels of course. Darren, on the other hand, is much more sensible and will bring the calmness needed to the proceedings.
Scott (right) and Darren
If someone’s never been before, what would you say to them? COME!! What are you waiting for?! Everybody wants to get out right now and get back to the way things were. A lot of people will be feeling anxious about this for some time and we’re here for that very reason - to offer a safe, happy place. 36 Advice from doctoral health researcher Mary Henderson on exercising in the heat…
Mad dogs and Englishmen All this warmer weather we’ve been having has put many in the mood for outdoor activity which is funny because it’s harder to exercise in the heat! When you exercise, you generate heat and your core temperature rises, so when you’re sweltering even before you’ve put your trainers on, your body has to work twice as hard to stop you from overheating. When it’s humid, your sweat doesn’t evaporate as well which is a main way of keeping cool. Training in hot humid weather can hinder your performance and lead to heat illness. This poses an even bigger danger for the elderly, young children and larger individuals. Here’s some tips for exercising safely in the heat. Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun! In other words, if you can, aim for cooler mornings and evenings. Wear light-coloured, breathable materials to allow for heat loss. Stay well hydrated. You need to drink more than you usually would but don’t overdo it. Hydrating should start from the night before. Extra if alcohol’s involved. Try to drink smaller amounts often instead of gulping a lot in one go right before your session. This isn’t enough time for the fluid to hydrate your body and it will only slosh around in your stomach. Most of us get more than enough salt(s) from our diet, but you might need an isotonic drink which can also help to retain water. Use a water-resistant sunscreen and apply it 30 minutes before heading out so that it has time to absorb into your skin. Wear sunglasses – ones that fit firmly but comfortably to your head and think about a visor or a headband if you get particularly sweaty. You don’t want to be running into people because you’ve got sweaty sun cream in your eyes!
Dehydration can lead to heat exhaustion and heat stroke. It doesn’t always come on immediately and can develop after a few days of heat exposure. Symptoms of heat exhaustion are heavy sweating, muscle cramps, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headache, fainting, nausea or vomiting, dark urine and/or cool, moist skin. If not treated, heat exhaustion can progress to heat stroke. Signs to watch for are dry, hot skin (no sweating), rapid, weak pulse, confusion, a body temperature of above around 39.5°C, seizures and unconsciousness. If you suspect heat stroke, call for medical assistance and try to keep the person cool and out of the sun. Having said this, do be motivated by the sunshine to get active.

Fostering...is it the right time for you? Brighton & Hove City Council know that the decision to become a foster carer can take years, and a lot of careful thought, consideration and research. Many will hold back until the ‘time is right’, so here we look at some of the most common fostering circumstances. We took early retirement
GENERAL
Martin, 64, and Liz, 60, took early retirement when Martin sold his business, and quickly experienced a “growing void”. The couple weren’t ready to take things easy and wanted to take on another challenge. They now enjoy fostering teenagers because it is a “familiar stage of parenting”. Liz says, “Having teenagers keeps me young, it’s got me back into real life!” We don’t have children of our own, but we have plenty of experience to share Sarah, 33, and Gemma, 35, don’t have children of their own, but both work professionally in childcare roles. It’s true that you will need some childcare experience to foster, but this does not have to have been gained through parenthood. To gain the childcare experience required, you need to understand how it feels to be fully responsible for a child overnight and on a regular basis. We wanted to make a difference as a family Sarah, Stephen and their two children aged 11 and 7 began fostering a year ago. Fostering has been a positive experience for them all and Sarah says she is proud of the “wonderful compassion, kindness and maturity” that her children have displayed. Stephen says, “It has turned out to be one of the best things we have ever done - for the children as well as for Sarah and myself.” I needed to re-evaluate my life skills and my career path Dave, 45, gained valuable experience through his 15-year career as a youth worker, but felt the time was right for him to help change the future of one young person at a time. “I loved my job, but I love being a foster carer even
more. I’ve been able to use my professional experience to help guide the young people in my care.” Beverly, 39, felt unfulfilled and unhappy in her role as a sales executive, so took a new direction in life as a foster carer. “I felt sick of feeling like what I was doing wasn’t enough – I wanted to make a difference.” They both received extensive training to ensure they had the skills and expertise required. When my children left home, I needed to fill the void When Nick and Felicity’s children left home, the time felt right for them to make a difference as foster carers. For some parents, children leaving home is a liberating time, but many find it difficult to adjust to the sudden emptiness and space. Fostering is a great opportunity for people whose own children are moving on in their lives. Felicity says, “I had so much more ‘Mum’ left in me.” Email fosteringrecruitment@brighton-hove.gov.uk for details of upcoming virtual information events or visit www.fosteringinbrightonandhove.org.uk

43 Congratulations to all those Hovarians receiving honours from the Queen…
Queen’s Birthday Honours
Singer and songwriter Alison Moyet, who was born in Essex but now lives in Hove, has been awarded the MBE for services to music. She began her recording career in 1982 with synth-pop band Yazoo and went on to top the UK album charts two years later with her first solo album, Alf. She has won three Brit awards. Alison commented: “A remarkable, happy-making 60th birthday surprise for me. Basildon’s Alf with extra initials. I didn’t see that coming. Recognition for a life in music is always unpredictable and humbling. This doesn’t come with a goody bag or gym membership, so I don’t feel too bad a thief. Instead, I think of my grandparents who toiled so that I might prance. It makes me proud to be able to attach their history to this.”
Nadine Benjamin
Nadine said: “What a moment in my life to remember and a very proud moment for my family! Thank you also to everyone that has supported me along my journey! I would not be here without you!”
Lisa King from Hove is Director of Communications at domestic abuse charity Refuge and has been awarded the OBE. Lisa said: “I am truly humbled to receive this honour. When I joined Refuge 18 years ago, I knew very little about the prevalence of domestic abuse in this country. Now, 18 years on, I am so proud to work with so many survivors who have really helped drive change in this country. We know we have so much work yet to do, and this honour will help drive me forward to continue the fight, until we can be sure that no woman or child is turned away from accessing the support they need, and that women can live safely, free from abuse.”
Nadine Benjamin from Hove is a lyric soprano and has been given the MBE for services to opera. She has performed at the Royal Opera House and has been an English National Opera Harewood Artist. In 2015 she founded an opera and mentorship programme “Everybody Can!”, to provide a platform to support others in achieving their own visions. Have a local editorial item? 46 Local history from Rachel Bridgeman…
From Guernica to Hove In July 1937, Pablo Picasso unveiled one of the greatest works of art of the 20th century – Guernica. Depicting the terror, tragedy and agony inflicted on an innocent civilian population during the Spanish civil war, this anti-war painting immortalised a horrific war crime.

For on 26th April 1937, German and Italian bombers of General Franco’s Nazi and Fascist allies had appeared in the skies above this unsuspecting, sleepy Basque market town. Within three hours of saturation bombing, Gernika (Guernica) had been obliterated. This atrocity, coming on top of civil war and hunger, triggered the coordination of an unprecedented mass-evacuation of refugee children. In May 1937, an ageing steamer (built for just 800 persons) docked at Southampton crammed to the gunnels with 4,000 traumatised children.
Girton House
It is still the largest single influx of child refugees ever in British history. Receiving no British government finance, the children’s welfare was entirely funded by voluntary contributions and supported by the National Joint Committee for Spanish Relief, charities, churches, trade unions and thousands of local volunteers. From a transit camp in Southampton, the children were dispersed to 94 Basque ‘colonies’ (residential homes) across Britain. Girton House on the seafront at Hove was a colony for 44 boys (later moving to Aylesbury in Furze Hill). The Brighton &

After the fall of Bilbao in June 1937, the children started to be repatriated. Eventually, most of those remaining at Hove were orphans, or had imprisoned or refugee parents. All but 400 children returned to their homeland - 250 settled in the UK permanently.

49 News from the council…
Ash dieback forces removal of trees Although many of the trees the council are removing look healthy, they are mainly riddled with the fungal infection ash dieback (ADB) and could cause serious damage to people and property if left alone. The disease is not only affecting ash trees in Brighton & Hove, it’s also killing the species throughout the country, with the worst affected areas being in the south-east of England. Although the council has relatively few ash trees within more urban areas, around 20% of all woodland trees owned by the council are ash. With an estimated 75-80% of ash trees throughout the country expected to die within the next five to ten years, we must accept that our woodlands will look very different as a result.

The council’s tree experts will use this as an opportunity to develop areas with a wider range of species and habitat diversity to cope with diseases. They are working closely with ecologists to minimise any potential disturbance to protected species like nesting birds and bats. Ash dieback is impossible to contain Unfortunately, ash dieback is impossible to contain. The symptoms first become visible during early June when the leaves are emerging. These show themselves as wilting, and dark discoloration on the leaves with elongated lesions developing on the smaller branches. Eventually the whole crown will become infected. The disease spreads via spores caught in the wind from tiny mushrooms born from the main leaf stalk and can spread over a ten-mile radius within one year. Some ash trees are tolerant or resistant to ADB and will be retained where possible to help re-stock our woodlands with native ash trees. Tree tops will be left on site mostly as a means to feed nutrients back into the cycle and to avoid suppressing ground flora with layers of wood chip. Please be careful in woodland areas Until ash removal works have been completed within our woodlands, remember to be extra careful when in these areas, especially during windy days, due to the potential risk of falling trees and deadwood. The first two sites the council have started work on are Coney Hill Woods, next to Mill Road near Waterhall, and Coldean Lane.

53 Robert Nemeth pays tribute to the former Member of Parliament for Hove…
Mike Weatherley
2nd July 1957 – 20th May 2021
I first met Mike in 2004 over a pint when he was campaigning to be Member of Parliament for Brighton Pavilion and still working as the accountant for music mogul Pete Waterman. His energy was infectious but he didn’t win that particular election. He was soon picked as the Hove candidate though and did win in 2010 by 1,868 votes; at which point he asked me to run his office in Parliament. A very close-knit team was built and we had five years of adventures, battles and challenges.
Mike may well have felt that his biggest achievements in Parliament were setting up Rock the House, a music competition for up and coming bands, and being appointed Intellectual Property Adviser to the Prime Minister. He famously wore an Iron Maiden T-shirt in the House of Commons to reflect his love of the genre. Alice Cooper once turned up for lunch on the Terrace. I felt that his greatest success was getting squatting in residential buildings criminalised. Pushing legislation through Parliament as a back-bencher is no mean feat and this change in the law helped tackle a crazy quirk that was bringing misery to many. These battles took their toll though; not least on his health during his long battle with oesophagus cancer. Despite this, he was a great defender of both Hove and Portslade throughout his term as our man in the House of Commons and fought constantly for their unique identities to be preserved and promoted.
GENERAL
I helped Mike with his Maiden Speech that he was always proud of which mentioned numerous local causes that were close to his heart including Emmaus in Portslade. He loved being an MP and was ever so proud to show his elderly parents around the Palace of Westminster on one occasion.
Mike’s influence on me was huge. He was a liberal in the real sense and embraced others’ interests and passions. People really warmed to him in the flesh and he made them feel special in a quite magical way. He briefly moved to Los Angeles for work and finally relocated to Alfriston from his beloved flat at Sussex Heights in Brighton. His three children – Mark, Chris and Becky – were nearby which would have meant the world to him. Although I hadn’t seen Mike so much over the past few years, I miss him already. Cllr Robert Nemeth, Wish Ward

An opportunity to stay active in later life…
A charity event on 24-25 July…
Lifelong learning with the u3a
Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail
If you are no longer in full-time work you have an amazing opportunity to experience new ideas, interests and friendship with your local u3a.
The Macmillan Coastal Garden Trail sadly had to be cancelled in 2020 but a scaleddown trail is planned this year for the weekend of 24-25 July. There will be 14 gardens to see, with eight in Brighton & Hove; three of them are new to the trail too. The trail will raise money for the Macmillan Horizon Centre in Brighton. All across the UK, over 400,000 u3a members are learning, staying active and having fun in later life. It’s local, social, friendly, low-cost and open to all. Brighton and Hove u3a, like over 1,000 others across the country, exists to promote lifelong learning through selfhelp interest groups chosen by members. There are also Monthly Meetings with speakers and coffee mornings where you can get to know people and what’s going on. Join a group to learn French, Spanish or participate in advanced Italian; study art, local history or wine appreciation; join discussion groups devoted to poetry, books or film, there’s also photography and community gardening or join one of our five walking groups; you can choose from over 60 other groups you’ll find on our website: http://www.brightonandhoveu3a.org . Contact us (contact@brightonandhoveu3a.org) or come along to our Open Day at St George’s Church in Kemp Town at 12 noon on Saturday 24 July. There you can speak to group leaders and sign up to pursue your existing interests - or discover new ones.

59 An event for people of all abilities…
Brighton Yoga and Wellbeing Festival Photo by John Isaacson (Insta: @john.a.isaacson)
Now in its 8th year, the event - which is the second largest in the UK - will include classes from internationally renowned yoga teachers, and will feature retail stalls, music, a children’s area and vegetarian food, as well as inspirational talks on subjects ranging from anatomy to nutrition to breathing techniques. Running over the weekend of 24th and 25th July, the first day of the festival will be live and in person at Cardinal Newman School, and the second day will be online. And it’s not just for experienced yogis the event is open to people of all abilities, experiences and backgrounds with special taster classes for those who have not tried yoga before. The festival was launched in 2014 and is run by the Brighton Yoga Foundation - a registered charity. But its reach goes far beyond the weekend itself. The personal benefits of yoga are well-documented. Regular practice improves stress, sleep, strength and flexibility, and many of us turned to our mats to strengthen bodies and calm minds to cope with the stresses of lockdown. But there is an increasing awareness that it can also be a powerful tool for social change. At the Brighton Yoga Foundation, we believe that yoga has the ability to transform lives - enabling people who have been through trauma to reconnect with their bodies and society. Our teachers reach out to people with mental health problems, stressed teenagers and those who have experienced domestic violence and offer free classes to those who can’t afford
them. We also provide classes for those in stressful jobs such as the police force and the NHS. Our classes are safe and inclusive, and we are committed to breaking down the barriers that mean yoga is often inaccessible to those who need it most. These obstacles include cost, lack of information and the perception that yoga is only for able-bodied people. We firmly believe that yoga is for everyone. Festival goers will be asked to pay what they can afford, and proceeds from the event will go towards our important work. It has been a difficult year for everyone, and we hope that the festival will provide a wonderful opportunity for people to relax, reconnect and recharge bodies and minds. 63 There are several Shakespeare favourites this month at the BOAT in Dyke Road Park…
July line-up at the Brighton Open Air Theatre
In July at BOAT, there are extended runs of Shakespeare favourites A Midsummer Night’s Dream (7-10 July), by Changeling Theatre, and Romeo and Juliet (14-17 July), presented by The Duke’s Theatre Company, whose production is packed with live music, uproarious comedy and heartbreak. There’s also The Comedy of Errors by Oddsocks Productions at the end of the month (30-31 July).
You can spend An Afternoon with Joe Stilgoe on Sunday 4 July. Joe is an internationally acclaimed singer, pianist and songwriter who has created a fresh sound for jazz in the 21st century. Another musical offering is Illyria’s performance of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic opera HMS Pinafore, with a reduced cast on a beautiful nautical set (29 July). For children, there’s a brand new, familyfriendly dance adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden (18 July). The iconic story is brought to life like never before in this high quality one-hour ballet, performed by an accomplished cast of dancers and musicians, with original choreography. Wonders with Grimm (25 July) by Heartbreak Productions is an evening of enchanting storytelling, full of magic, puppetry, and music, as you enter
GENERAL
Other drama this month includes Dracula (21-24 July). Identity Theatre present this Victorian Gothic masterpiece with full respect for the original nightmare creation. With shades of fairy tale and folk legend, this beautiful adaptation reflects aspects often missed in contemporary reworkings – the underlying sensuality and sheer abandon buried but very much alive in the original text. Don’t Dress for Dinner (1-3 July) is a breath-taking boulevard farce by Marc Camoletti.
An Afternoon with Joe Stilgoe is on 4 July
into the fantastical world of the Brothers Grimm with altered endings and a modern twist. There’s also an action-packed adaptation of The Three Musketeers by Immersion Theatre (28 July), who invite you on a swashbuckling adventure of epic proportions. This gripping tale, brimming with excitement, danger and comedy, as well as bags of audience interaction, will have families on the edge of their seats to find out whether the heroes will thwart the scheming Cardinal Richelieu and the deadly Milady de Winter. 65 Eona Johnston interviews an artist who lives in Hove…
Artist Annie Mendelow Annie Mendelow has been an artist for the past 60 years and has lived locally for the past 17 years. I recently interviewed her about her inspirations, methods of painting and how she believes artists are being impacted due to pandemic circumstances. Brighton Birds screenprint by Annie Mendelow
Style Previously Annie focused more towards oil paintings and nude artwork. Around 10 to 15 years ago Annie became interested in photography, as well as etching and screen printing. Recently, she has photographed white tulips every day, in addition to appreciating the beautiful sunset. She has become more involved in creating screen printing pieces. ‘Screen printing is more graphic. It is not the same as a brush and canvas and it is very technical,’ Annie told me. The method involves taking a photograph, processing it into a black and white photo on a computer and developing a screen. Ink is pushed through each screen and dragged through different colours, so it has many layers. For instance, Annie created a large nude screen print, which involved 15 different screens. Each screen was made of nylon mesh, having holes of different sizes. A screen was made for each area and each colour. This method is done by hand and is an organised, timeconsuming process. Inspiration Annie gets inspiration from her surroundings and other artists. Travelling,

After she completed her degree, she moved to Scotland and opened a gallery selling work produced by contemporary artists.
exploring landscapes, aspects of nature and simple everyday things have an impact on her concepts for pieces. She is also influenced by traditional artists such as Rembrandt and Leonardo. Artists who use colour heavily inspire her, such as the 1920s Scottish colourists, impressionists, Modigliani and the work of the PreRaphaelites. Pandemic and creativity ‘People can’t enjoy art and go to galleries, which is very negative,’ Annie stated. Despite people being able to access art online it is not the same as seeing it in real life. Art students have also been negatively impacted as studying art online does not feel the same. It was a pleasure to speak with Annie, and hopefully as restrictions are lifted, the art world will return to its previous state. www.annemendelow.com

Hove schoolboy donates his hair
Brighton and Hove Buses (part of the Go-Ahead Group) have submitted a planning application to demolish their existing bus garage buildings (the West Garage) on Conway Street and build a new four-storey bus garage, including offices and engineering floorspace.
Year 6 Shoreham College pupil Xan, who lives in Hove, has been growing his hair since he read about the Little Princess Trust back in 2017 and decided he wanted to help.
GENERAL
Plans for new bus garage
Artist’s impression of the proposed new bus garage as viewed from Conway Street
The external façade will be clad alternately with dark grey aluminium panels and glazed partitions, which the developers say will give the building “a nice modern style look which will be in keeping with the future development of the surrounding area,” staying away from the very industrial look of a standard bus depot.
In June he finally had the big cut and donated 35cm of hair to the charity! The Little Princess Trust, which relies solely on the efforts of community fundraisers, makes wigs from donations of human hair for children who have lost theirs through illness.
Community walls are proposed for the southern boundary of the site on Conway Street, which could take the form of street art. These will be interspersed with greened fencing, planted out with vegetation to increase wildlife.
Whilst he was growing his hair Xan commented, “People often think I’m a girl because of my hair, but that does not bother me. I want to grow it as long as I can so that there is a lot of hair for them to make the wigs.”
For full details and to comment on the application, visit planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk and search for application BH2021/01731.
Xan not only donated his hair but also raised money through a JustGiving page where his supporters donated over £684.

69 Keep safe if you’re swimming in the sea this summer…
Beach and sea safety Brighton & Hove’s seasonal lifeguards are now patrolling the city’s beaches until the end of the school holidays in September.
•
Hove (opposite King Alfred)
•
Central Hove Lawns (bottom of Grand Avenue)
•
Central Brighton (opposite the seafront office)
•
East side of the Palace Pier (Madeira Drive)
The stations have new lifeguard lookout towers which provide greater visibility for the team. Please help the council maintain a safe and enjoyable seafront by taking extra care if you are swimming in the sea. While the air temperature may be warm, the water is still cold. Keep an eye on children near the water’s edge and keep pets on leads and away from the shoreline. There is additional information about seaside safety on the RNLI’s website at: rnli.org/safety. The seafront team also post safety messages from their BHSeafrontTeam social media accounts on Facebook and Instagram. If you are heading to the beach, please enjoy the beach responsibly. That includes disposing of litter in the appropriate bins provided.
Flags The team is also keen to remind people to swim within the areas patrolled by the lifeguards. These are clearly marked with red and yellow flags. A red flag means it is dangerous to bathe or swim and you should stay away from the water. This could be due to dangerous sea conditions, but it could also be as a result of a health risk caused by a sewage spill following a storm. Don’t drink and go in the water Brighton & Hove City Council’s seafront team is also calling on residents and visitors to avoid swimming if they have consumed alcohol. It is never safe to go into the sea after drinking alcohol. Even a small amount can speed up the onset of hypothermia. Drinking reduces your capabilities and perceptions. You may also think you are a better swimmer than your true ability and take unnecessary risks.
