News from the Friends of Three Cornered Copse…
The Weary Copse At this time of year, the woodland floor of Three Cornered Copse is looking a little tired. The vegetation has a ragged appearance. The greens are no longer vibrant, the floor is dry and dusty, and because the high canopy is so dense, a reduced amount of light filters through to a few surviving plants among the tree roots. Leaves are starting to fall and carpet the floor, and here and there a few toadstools appear. All of the action is in the hedgerows. It’s been a good year for berries, the season started on time, and we had a warm spring. The hawthorn bushes are laden with fruit, and the blackberries have been ripe for many weeks. The birds and small mammals are gorging themselves in this natural food bank. For our summer visitor birds the copse is a last chance to fill up before heading out over the channel to their winter homes in the Mediterranean and Africa.

Hedgerows in Three Cornered Copse
The grey squirrels seem to be more numerous than ever. You’ll see one or two every few metres in the woodland, gathering nuts and frantically devouring them. Great entertainment for the dogs who walk there each day. A fraction of our copse remains under threat from the proposed developments at Toads Hole Valley. Reassuringly there are a growing number of objections appearing on the planning site, which was recently amended with modified plans. Unfortunately they still contain plans to carve a strip of land from the edge of the copse at the corner of Dyke Road Avenue and King George VI Avenue. This is to accommodate an “AREA OF LAND REQUIRED OUTSIDE OF HIGHWAY CONTROL TO FACILITATE 4.3m PEDESTRIAN/CYCLEWAY TO BE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE” [by the council]. In other words, the proposal is to use the Woodland Drive Conservation Area (which includes Three Cornered Copse) to provide a cycle path and pavement. The council will gift the land. The discussions continue, but planning comments are still being added. Details of how to access these are on our Facebook page. As for the Friends of Three Cornered Copse, we remain dormant as a team, but active as individuals. Many thanks are due to those that regularly collect litter that accumulates each day, (new litter pickers are very welcome!). In the meantime we wait for the council to allow our work days once again, even in small groups. Simon Baxendale

Gaynor Wingham meets the official photographer for Formula 1…
Hove Park person… Bryn Lennon Photography, travel and sport would be a dream job for many people. Bryn Lennon, a Hove Park resident, has a career in sports photography which takes him around the world. He originates from the Lake District. In 2007 he lived in Poets Corner, Hove, and three years ago he moved to Woodruff Avenue, Hove Park, where he lives with his wife and two children. How did he start? Bryn said he always had an interest in photography and was offered to study photography at GCSE in the 6th form. Following an evening course at the local Arts centre in Kendal he went on to achieve a BA at the London College of Printing. He worked in the darkroom of a specialist motorsport agency when digital photography was becoming a viable option. He became their Formula One digital technician and travelled to the Grand Prix for two seasons. He joined Allsport agency in 2001 (which had been bought by Getty Images) when the British cycling revolution was taking place and he started to cover more cycling. He worked first with the track team and then with the road team where he became the Team Sky photographer with Getty Images. Since then he has covered 14 Tour de France events including the first British win by Bradley Wiggins and many other British cycling successes. Bryn has covered three Olympic Games, two Paralympics, over a hundred Grand Prix events and hundreds of Premier League games and Ironman triathlons. This year he is the official photographer for F1. COVID-19 has presented its own challenges. Earlier this year in Melbourne Australia a member of the McLaren team tested positive for COVID-19 and the race

was cancelled before any of the cars had turned a wheel. He managed to get back to the UK before lockdown and with no sports events was assigned to cover news stories. However, one of the first sports to return was Formula One which started with a double header race in Austria. With all the attention on them, the team’s movement was heavily restricted and F1 separated them into 44 different bubbles across the paddock and pit lane. Bryn must be regularly COVID tested every five days with the pandemic around. Bryn said he likes the variety of the job, the travel, and the sense of optimism that there’s “a big picture around the corner”. He keeps active by cycling around the South Downs. He must have picked up some tips! Bryn Lennon | Photographer | Getty Images Website: www.brynlennon.com Twitter: @brynlennon

News from Conservative councillor for Hove Park Samer Bagaeen…
Where’s the fudge... Planning in Hove Park Through the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), a Neighbourhood Planning Programme led by Locality, with planning consultancy AECOM, was commissioned in April this year to provide design support to Hove Park Neighbourhood Forum. The Forum requested professional advice on design guidelines for any potential building modification or infill development within the Hove Park Ward area. Two socially distant blended walks followed in May and the draft design code guide for Hove Park was produced early in September.
es with large green gardens in cities are gone. This set a dangerous precedent for Hove Park and, while the Forum is mindful of the need for more housing, the council was not even enforcing rules that meant developers had to provide affordable homes for our residents. That’s the fudge.
The main objective of the design code is to develop design guidelines that any building modification or potential development in Hove Park should follow in order to retain and protect the historic and residential character of the area. The report also addresses streetscape improvement, pedestrian and cycling safety, and sustainability strategies.
Residents unhappy with committee outcomes have discovered that their options to appeal are very limited. It could cost £1,500 - £2,000 to get a barrister to assess a planning case against the council, with a further £1,500 needed to get the relevant paperwork issued.
The Forum also commissioned a Housing Needs Assessment with Government funding. This report concluded that the dwelling mix in Hove Park must continue to be determined by life-stage modelling. In simple terms, Hove Park plays an important role in the wider market in the city - since the city centre is dominated by smaller homes, the Hove Park Neighbourhood Area provides an option for those looking for larger homes. Unfortunately, recent planning officer recommendations in Hove Park and approvals at committee went against this modelling. These include building houses on back gardens against Government and Council policies. In September, councillors noted at the planning committee that the days of hous-
It does not end there. To then get proceedings issued against the council, there are further costs around £2,000. At that point the council could concede or go to court (if it’s court then that’s another £4,000 - £5,000 in barrister fees). Residents who take this route against the council can only expect to get back 60/80% if they win the case. Where does this leave us? We, all of us, need to engage more with applications early on so that all views are heard. It then becomes more effective to put a case to the council. Cllr Prof Samer Bagaeen

Goldstone Crescent flats approved... The Planning Committee, meeting on 17th September, has approved plans to replace two family houses on the eastern side of Goldstone Crescent, opposite Hove Park, with two three-storey buildings of seven flats each. The plans were submitted as two separate planning applications for 55 and 57 Goldstone Crescent, between The Droveway and Woodruff Avenue. The council received objections from neighbours concerned about extra traffic and parking problems, the scale of the new buildings, overlooking and overshadowing. There was also concern about the large number of houses around Hove Park being demolished and replaced with flats. Hove Park ward councillor Vanessa Brown strongly objected to both applications. She

The new flats (on the left) proposed for 57 Goldstone Crescent
said in her submission: “They are both to knock down a perfectly good family home and to build 7 flats on each site. This is not the correct location for blocks of flats. There are some flats at the Old Shoreham Road end of Goldstone Crescent but only up as far as the first turning off Goldstone Crescent – Hove Park Road. These two houses are situated in the middle of owner occupied residential houses facing the park and are not near any flats. To pass these applications would set a terrible precedent.” However, a report to the committee concluded that the schemes would make a small contribution to the council’s housing targets, which in conjunction with “the high quality of architecture, good standard of accommodation, lack of a significant impact on highways safety and neighbouring amenity as well as a net gain in biodiversity” would allow the application to be recommended for approval subject to conditions. In the committee debate, Councillor Elaine Hills welcomed the fact that more people on low incomes would be able to afford to live in the area. The committee voted in favour of both applications.

Local news…
Outdoor cinema, our delayed annual general meeting, and new drawings for the nature trail. So much has happened in such a short space of time, and there is so much to tell you about. Let’s start off with the very exciting news about our outdoor cinema. Showing a film in Stoneham Park has been an idea bubbling away at the back of the cupboard for four years. At last we are going ahead now, of all times! The film chosen is The Goonies (1985), written by Chris Columbus and Steven Spielberg, and directed by Richard Donner. It will be shown on a big screen in the park at 18.30 on Saturday 3 October. There is no charge but, because of the pandemic, it is a ticketed event. This event is one of the many exemptions to the recently announced Rule of Six, and has been approved by the local authority. Please see our website or Facebook page for details. If you can’t make it this time, we expect to have more showings in the future! Next, our annual general meeting. We were pleased at the turnout, with a couple of new faces. The meeting had to be delayed because of the Lockdown, but we were able to report a healthy financial position, elect a new chairman, and arrange a date for us to clear the park of some massive weeds that had grown since Lockdown. Our previous chairman, David Jarvis, stood down after two years in the job and remains our artistic consultant, a job for which he is well qualified. Our next meeting will be in the first week of October and you are most welcome. Again, check online for details. And finally, the nature trail or wildlife garden. This really has been in the pipeline for a long time, and I have written about it many times before. You will recall that in last month’s issue of The Hovarian we sang the praises of trees and, in particular, a call for more trees in Stoneham Park. We have now engaged the services of a local landscape gardener, Zachary Lewis, who has produced some excellent preliminary
drawings (pictured) of what this area might look like with some magnificent trees. The cost of this will be considerable and we hope to add to our existing funds with fundraising activities in the near future. This story is likely to run and run! Richard Hearnden www.friendsofstonehampark.uk

Sharon Duggal publishes her second novel... Sharon Duggal lives in Poynter Road. Her first novel The Handsworth Times was chosen as the 2017 “City Reads” title in Brighton & Hove. Her latest novel, Should We Fall Behind, is published on 22nd October by Bluemoose Books. What was it like to have your debut novel chosen for “City Reads”? It was a total honour to have my debut novel read by such a variety of different people across the city I live in. I was especially pleased to be selected as it meant my book was sent in the direction of readers who may otherwise not have come across it. I am hoping some of those same readers will also read my second novel as a result. What is your new book about? Should We Fall Behind is a story about people who live side by side in a busy city but hardly seem to notice each other until, one day, someone called Jimmy arrives in their midst and things begin to change. It is a book about the stories behind the stories of ordinary people - people who could be any of us. Essentially, I wanted to write about the universal human experiences which connect us all regardless of who we are. Has the book been influenced by your own experiences? It is inspired by the urban multicultural communities I am intrinsically part of and is specifically influenced by experiences of people from immigrant backgrounds like my own family. I think most writers draw from their own unique experiences of the world, either directly or indirectly. I think it would be almost impossible not to; even if you are writing about completely imagined places and events, you bring your own understanding of the world to it.
Are you now able to concentrate completely on your writing? Sadly not. I have a part-time job, freelance work and a family. However, I am very lucky that my job, with New Writing South, means I am in close contact with a wide variety of other writers and there is much to be gained from being part of a community of writers like this which helps me develop my own creative work. Who are your own favourite writers? That’s difficult to answer as there are so many I love for different reasons. John Steinbeck, Patti Smith, Emile Zola, Annie Proulx, Roald Dahl, Toni Morrison, Jhumpa Lahiri, Elizabeth Strout, Colm Toibin, RK Narayan, Leonard Cohen, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Hermann Hesse… the list is endless. Should We Fall Behind by Sharon Duggal is available online and from all independent and high street bookshops including City Books in Hove and Waterstones in Brighton and Hove.

Hove Methodist Church Hove Methodist Church has reopened, but they are not opening every Sunday for service. They share an online service between the Methodist Churches of Brighton & Hove, and the “live” service rotates around the churches in turn. The next live Sunday service will be on 25th October (10.30am). Sunday services follow the Methodist Church guidelines for worship, which means wearing a mask, cleansing hands on entry and keeping a safe distance. Hymns will not be sung, but communion will be shared in the Sanctuary. In the meantime there is a weekly Thursday Communion service in the church at 10am (masked and distanced), and a church support group that meets in Rev Andy Lowe’s back garden on a Friday morning. The church building has also reopened for classes, including Slimming World, Pilates, yoga, drama tuition and MusicBugs (a music group for parents, babies and toddlers), plus a couple of support groups (AA and CODA). The list is changing weekly. The Lunch Club are still delivering hot lunches and food packages twice a week, but are hoping to reopen for smaller groups in November.

19 News from Councillor Robert Nemeth, Conservative councillor for Wish ward…
Wish Ward Councillor News We see the starting point of problems as a number of tyre-slashing incidents in mid-2016 but today it is more likely to be car-keying. Roads to the south of Portland Road have been particularly affected with incidents taking place late at night. Each week, we found ourselves advising residents to report crimes. We did so on the basis that reporting would lead to a tipping point with a police operation being launched, or a crackdown initiated. In response, some streets have had a mail-drop letter from the police. The usual response though was a closed file with a note mentioning a damage threshold of £5,000 not being reached and the case being closed. Having strongly made the case that these incidents combined are causing far in excess of this figure each weekend, with over 30 vehicles being keyed at around £500 per vehicle on one night recently, we called on Sussex Police to launch a dedicated operation to catch the perpetrator(s). We pointed out that £1million of damage has taken place since mid-2016. The police responded. One young individual was apprehended very swiftly, with brave assistance from a number of residents in South Portslade. J.H. Completely separate to the issue of car damage, crimes are being committed on a near-nightly basis on the streets of West Hove. We now feel that Sussex Police is taking the matter seriously but much is still to be done. The last thing that we want to see is residents taking matters into their own hands through sheer frustration at the system. Damage is still happening at the Lagoon for example with those responsible yet to be stopped or apprehended. The schools returning at long last seems to have had an effect on anti-social behaviour generally and matters have improved in Wish Park and Stoneham Park at least. Autumnal nights help in that regard. We continue to join our local PCSOs for patrols in the area so that they know every nook and cranny. We hope to update residents soon on various tree-related projects in the ward but are waiting for some final answers from the Council on locations. 21 Meet a local songwriter…
West Hove person…Ken Murray Ken Murray is a songwriter, living in the St Leonards area of West Hove. Now 73, he has been in the music business on and off for 50 years and one of his songs has recently been released as a single on music website Bandcamp. How long have you lived in West Hove? WEST HOVE
8 years West Hove. 57 years Brighton and Hove. Tell us more about the new single… I met Matt Coldrick, Gabrielle’s ex-guitarist, some time ago and we recorded four of my songs; celebrated Scottish singer Astrid Williamson did the vocals on one of the songs. I met Matt again in November of last year and we recorded three more of my songs; one of them “Thankful” was a homage to my grandparents living in rural Kent in the fifties but Matt has transformed it into a glorious gospel song beautifully sung by Brighton singer Alison David. We managed to get Neil Cowley who played and co-wrote on Adele’s albums to play some superb piano on the track. Have you worked with any interesting singers in the past? I was part of the Gatton-Hurley-Murray partnership; we were house songwriters for the famous Surrey Sound studios in the late seventies and early eighties. At the time Police, 10cc and Siouxsee and the Banshees were recording there. We recorded a single, “Sweet Maxine”, with Peter Cox (Go West) on lead vocals and Judy Tzuke on backing vocals before her career took off. We wrote for soul singer Earlene Bentley, The Real Thing and many more. I co-wrote five tracks on Wild Willy Barrett’s eponymous album “Call of the Wild”. I have co-written with Frank Holland of the Pretty Things, well-known Brighton studio owner and songwriter Kev Stagg, and lately with Matt Coldrick.
Have you done any other jobs alongside songwriting? I have worked in the coffee supply industry for 35 years. I had the contract to supply coffee to business class lounges at 15 UK airports. Luckily I retired before Covid 19! What do you like to do to relax? I am a life member of Arundel Cricket Club and played league cricket for them until three years ago; I am on the committee and sometimes umpire. Travelling with my wife H and playing piano and writing songs. Ken’s song “Thankful”, sung by Alison David, can be found at thegratitudeproject1.bandcamp.com/releases, and there’s a video on YouTube under: Alison David Ken Murray and Matt Coldrick “Thankful”.

23 Local news…
News from the West Hove Forum Following two fatal incidents in August, local councillors have been given a full briefing on sea safety. It wasn’t possible to increase the number of lifeguards along the city’s coast for a variety of reasons, mostly as a result of Covid-19, but the council are taking people’s comments into account for next season and signage has been increased.
Rockwater planning application
The application can be found on the council’s planning register: planningapps.brighton-hove.gov.uk. Search for BH2020/02211.
Seafront petition An online petition has been started by Hove resident Andrea Lewis for the council to improve the state of the seafront in Hove and Portslade: https://present.brighton-hove.gov.uk/ mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=714 The petition closes on 23rd November.
Pavement parking
The proposed design for Rockwater
Rockwater bar on the seafront has submitted a second planning application. Their first application, which has already been approved by the council, included a roof terrace. Proposed alterations and extensions in the second application include a retractable roof. Hundreds of supporting comments have been submitted, including one from MP Peter Kyle, with only a few objections so far. However, the Conservation Advisory Group has recommended refusal of the application on the grounds that it is harmful to the beachscape and to the Sackville Gardens conservation area. The West Hove Seafront Action Group will be submitting a statement in support of the new application.
There is currently a Government consultation for new legislation on pavement parking, which could increase the powers of local councils to ban this. Brighton & Hove City Council has for a long time lobbied for more powers to deal with the problem. They say they welcome the consultation as pavements are for people and vehicles parked there can reduce the independence of many vulnerable people. Pavement parking is difficult to stop and increasing numbers of drivers are blocking access as well as damaging pavements and grass verges. During the consultation the council will be asking for powers to put in and enforce a universal ban on pavement parking or, in the short term, new powers to tackle obstructive parking. You can find the consultation at: https:// www.gov.uk/government/consultations/ managing-pavement-parking. It closes on 22nd November 2020. West Hove Forum meetings are attended by ward councillors and a wide range of community representatives. If you would like to attend our next meeting on behalf of a group or business, please email us at westhoveforum@gmail.com.

25 West Hove news…
Brighton & Hove City Council has announced a U-turn on plans to close the south end of Richardson Road to traffic without any consultation with traders.
Hove Micro-School
Enterprising primary school teacher Rachael Ammari has launched Brighton & Hove’s first micro-school to educate up to six primary age A petition was drawn up by local resident Amanda Menahem which was signed by children within the safety of her every business on the small shopping street. own home-schooling bubble in The U-turn was confirmed to Cllr Robert Boundary Road. Nemeth after he raised concerns on behalf of Wish Ward residents on nearby streets who were concerned that the plans would result in chaos.
St Philip’s Church Services at St Philip’s Church on the corner of New Church Road and Richardson Road have now restarted.
A spoken service with communion takes place every Sunday at 9.30am. Hymns are not allowed because of Covid-19 but the organist David plays before and after the service. Face masks must be worn unless exempt and social distancing is practised. They are a friendly congregation and get together for coffee too. They look forward to welcoming you.
With a Masters in Education and over five years’ professional teaching experience, including at Hove Junior School and Benfield Primary School, Rachael has recently returned from two years teaching in Miami where the concept of micro-schooling is well known. Rachael explains: “With the fear of Covid19 resurfacing during the winter months, I can provide a safer alternative for parents and children of primary school age, who are worried about returning to mainstream schooling too soon. A micro-school can offer peace of mind during this uncertainty and can be the perfect bridge between home-schooling and mainstream education.” Hove Micro-School will have a limited number of pupils - up to a maximum of six with an initial start-up to cater for four children between the ages of 8-11. This will allow the children to interact with their peers in a safe and consistent environment, enabling extra care and attention that cannot be provided in a larger class. The school opened on 7th September and operates Monday to Friday from 8.30am until 3.30pm. For more information, visit hovemicro-school.com or email rachaelammari@hovemicro-school.com

New 5G phone mast... A planning application has been submitted to the council for a phone mast in Boundary Road. An 18m mast with associated equipment cabinets is proposed by Hutchison 3G (H3G), to be located outside 69 and 70 Boundary Road (Colosseo restaurant).
WEST HOVE
H3G say that they need to upgrade existing sites and build new sites in order to provide the latest 5G technology, which means their service will be much faster and able to handle more data. They say that the site selection process has been influenced by the numerous vertical elements of street furniture already close to the site, including lamp-posts, and that the height of the pole has been kept down to the absolute minimum capable of providing the required new 5G coverage. The site has been located in a position that they say will not impede pedestrian flow or the safety of passing motorists. The council has received more than 100 objections from neighbours who are concerned about the height of the mast, street clutter and possible adverse health effects from 5G technology. One said: “The tower is considerably taller than the two storey buildings in the area and will be an eyesore. It will also obstruct the narrow pavement for those with buggies and wheelchairs.” The council’s Environmental Protection department have said in the past that the balance of evidence to date suggests that exposures to radiofrequency radiation below National Radiological Protection Board guidelines do not cause adverse health effects and that exposures of the general public to radio waves are well within the international health-related guideline levels that are used in the UK. The application can be found on the council’s planning register: planningapps. brighton-hove.gov.uk (BH2020/02143).

29 News from the Friends of Hove Lagoon…
Friends of Hove Lagoon update Despite the restrictions of Covid 19, FoHL has been quite busy. The Lagoon itself has, of course been a popular place for socially distanced activity during lockdown and more so since lockdown has been relaxed.
WEST HOVE
What’s particularly gratifying is that the Big Beach Café, the LagoonFunPlay rides, Lagoon Watersports and the Gather Inn have reopened (with social distancing) and the Cheese Hut and B&NFS (Fish) have remained open throughout. We have tried our best to support them all. There have been some unfortunate episodes of vandalism, which have been reported to the police and which we wish to pursue further, as it is becoming a regular and increasing issue for the Lagoon. The FoHL/LagoonFest Committee has been meeting monthly on Zoom and, once we are allowed to, we will be holding open meetings again at the Big Beach Café and the Gather Inn. We have sent out regular bulletins so that our supporters can be kept informed and feel supported during these difficult times.

More recently we have held socially distanced Lagoon and Beach Clean-Ups with Surfers Against Sewage and two of our committee members, David and Francis, are leading on regular Weedathons and Recycling sessions, respectively. Volunteers are most welcome!

Our biggest event – LagoonFest - was cancelled this year in response to the Government’s restrictions on large public events. Instead we have decided to hold a few smaller events until we begin planning for LagoonFest 2021 on 4th September next year. Our first “LagoonFest Extra” event was a socially distanced Hove Lagoon Big Picnic on 5th September, in conjunction with The Social Society. We attracted a good number of families - and dogs - who enjoyed their picnics (and in

31 Black History Month continues in Brighton with online and live activity…
Black History Month 2020 October 2020 marks the 17th year for Black History Month in Brighton, since a 2003 event at the Old Market, organised by Bert Williams MBE and Sarah Lee from Brighton & Hove Black History.
Like most festivals this year, celebrations this year are moving to online spaces for safety reasons due to coronavirus-19, but don’t expect to see a diminished appetite for enjoyment of this special month. These events are the tip of the iceberg so make sure to check our website for more events and details. Banyan Tree Theatre Group has teamed up with Komedia Sundae Club to share the magic and mystery of East African heritage with a story to inspire and enlighten young minds on Sunday 5 October as an online event. Writing Our Legacy will host its popular Poetry Room (3 Oct), an online event compered by poet Akila Richards featuring poets Jinhao Xie and Neelam Saredia-Brayley, live African music from Gambian master percussionist Musa Mboob, DJ set from DJ Fever2Ray from African Night Fever. The monthly Writers of Colour Social features Eleanor Hope and Sharon Duggal (30 Oct). Supported by Arts Council England. Throughout October, urbanflo creative will produce a physical exhibition at three different sites in the city plus a virtual exhibition linked to two festivals as part of neXus arts exchange, which is a collaboration between artist Vian Roos in association with Vrystaat Arts Festival (South

33 Local history from Lindsey Tydeman of The Keep archive centre…
Hove’s Floral Clock Next time you’re crossing Palmeira Square, have a look at the mound in the middle. It still houses Hove’s Floral Clock, installed to celebrate the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. Sometimes it’s working – often it isn’t – but in 1953 it was cutting edge technology…
One clock face was superimposed on bedding plants in the shape of a Maltese cross with a lion and unicorn. The other was superimposed on the Hove Borough coat of arms. The colour scheme was red, blue and green. In June 1953, coach parties arrived and crowds of sightseers wore out the lawn around the clock. This necessitated the laying of two 20ft crazy-paving paths on the east and west sides, and the Council also built a two-foot high fence around the structure, ‘to keep out cats and dogs’, according to the Sussex Daily News. The floral clock and its novel ‘carpet bedding’ brought Hove to the attention of the horticultural world. In 1966 Hove was invited to exhibit a replica of the clock at Chelsea Flower Show. This proud moment for the Borough is captured in a collection of photographs at The Keep (ACC 7505), showing four Hove plantsmen anxiously surveying the structure while a fifth scrambles underneath making it secure. This time it featured a road safety design by Hove schoolgirl Jacqueline Robson, who had won a competition with
GENERAL
The accession of Queen Elizabeth in 1952 posed a dilemma for local authorities. How best could they show their loyalty to their young monarch while also providing something of use and beauty to the general public? Weymouth had a floral crown but the councils of Liverpool, Edinburgh, Bromley, Hastings and Hove chose a floral clock. And Hove went one better; its clock had two faces rather than one, making it the only two-dialled floral clock in the world. her design and slogan, ‘Don’t be a donkey, practise road safety’. After its installation, the floral bedding under the clockface was regularly renewed to give different civic messages. Designs celebrated the promotion of BHA to the Football League Division III in 1965, the Diamond Jubilee of the Women’s Transport Service in 1967, the Centenary of the South Eastern Electricity Board in 1971 and fifty years of The British Legion – ‘Service – Not Self’ – in 1971. www.thekeep.info

35 Glenn Norris of the Sussex Wildlife Trust looks at the wildlife of Hove…
Bats in Hove I will never forget the first time I heard the echo-locating calls of Common Pipistrelles along the Water of Leith in Edinburgh. Ten years on I still get a buzz when I’m listening in on their private conversations as they search for love and food; two of the highest priorities in our natural world.
Being a small bodied animal and using an enormous amount of energy to fly, bats feed heavily during the night; a Common Pipistrelle can feed on thousands of tiny midges in one night. For this reason, bats indicate the presence of healthy invertebrate-rich habitats. To avoid conflict, different species have evolved to feed on different prey at different times and amongst different habitats. Daubenton’s Bats have large feet for picking up insects off the surface of the water whereas the large Noctule catches moths flying over 5m. In Hove, bats are most likely to be seen in the few remaining green spaces: Hove Park, Hove Cemetery and Benfield Valley Nature Reserve. The bats found in Hove are probably the aerobatic Common Pipistrelle and heavy-duty Noctule as these bats are tolerant of artificial lighting from streetlights and have even adapted to feeding on the moths and insects that have been attracted by the artificial glow. During the day these bats are most likely roosting in the roof voids of buildings, cracks in mortar and under loose roof tiles;
GENERAL
All 17 species of bat that breed in the UK can be found in Sussex and 15 of these have been recorded on Sussex Wildlife Trust reserves. Most notable is the annual presence of the 18th British bat, the Greater Mouseeared Bat hibernating in a disused train tunnel. Considered extinct in Britain since the 1990’s, this individual was first seen again in 2002 and has been recorded in the same tunnel every winter since. Where it goes for the summer, we have no idea.
pipistrelles are so small that they can fit in a hole the size of your thumb. And although they’ve learnt to tolerate light, they still aren’t fond of flying over brightly lit roads, so within Hove, the railway line looks like an ideal bat super-highway as they move through the landscape. At this time of year, they’ll have just finished mating and are frantically feeding throughout the night to gain enough weight for their hibernation in old railway tunnels and other cool dark places through the winter. These days, bat detectors are relatively inexpensive and easy to use, so pick one up, head outside just after sunset in a local park or woodland and dial in to the usually inaudible buzzes, clicks and whistles. glennnorris@sussexwt.org.uk

39 Healthy living advice from Nathalie Sansonetti…
Who’s in charge here? Now more than ever, I feel the need to voice my passion for healthy eating, healthy habits and, last but not least, healthy thinking. You may feel that external factors have been controlling your wellbeing and stopping you in your attempt to feel well physically and mentally. Whether Covid-19, stress, sugar, pollution, genes, slow metabolism, low immunity or even emotions triggering you to eat the ‘wrong’ foods, all these factors have one thing in common: YOUR ability to control their impact on you.
Step one: Always start with self-awareness: You are the best judge of what habits, foods and even thoughts work for or against you right now. You know that you don’t drink enough water, smoke too much, don’t move enough, eat too much sugar. You know what these are doing to you. Sit with objectivity and compassion for yourself and make a list of the genuinely good things, habits, foods and thoughts that work for you – versus those that don’t. (This should be a long list and no one else has to see it.) Step two: Take one food/thought/belief/ habit out of that list and make a decision to change it for what you know does work for you. You may need help with that, or to do some research, but do it. Step three: Address one new habit/food/ thought from your list when you’ve made a lasting change to the previous set. Give yourself time (even months) to really feel the difference these changes have made. You’ve probably had years of thinking/ eating/acting in a certain way; it may take time to shift these.
GENERAL
If you want to start taking charge of your health, here are some tips I have gathered from helping hundreds of patients turn their health around, that could do the same for you:
Make a list of the good things that work for you versus those that don’t
Step four: Train yourself to control your thoughts. Only YOU are responsible for them, and they affect your emotions, choices and reactions, and ultimately they will manifest physically. So stop those that don’t serve your ‘plan’. Take full responsibility for your eating habits, thoughts, lifestyle choices. No one else - not viruses, ‘new world order’, ‘those in charge’ or even your genes or metabolism – are ultimately responsible. You are. New graffiti hotline If you see someone tagging or have evidence against anyone daubing graffiti, you can now report it though the council’s environmental enforcement hotline.
Bus pass times for older people Older person’s bus pass travel time has reverted to the previous hours of 9am to 4am.
Residents can call 01273 295063 and council officers will be able to respond quickly. The phone line is open from 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. A voicemail function is in place outside of these hours. Environmental enforcement officers can fine anyone found drawing graffiti on public and private land where they don’t have the landowner’s permission. They will issue fixed penalty notices of £150. The council are also working closely with Sussex Police on prosecuting offenders. Two recent high profile prosecutions include a Hove man found guilty of racially or religiously aggravated criminal damage and a Brighton man ordered to pay almost £2,000 compensation for tagging offences. Residents can also call the hotline number to report fly-tipping offences. The council are not responsible for the removal of graffiti on private property. However, they can take legal action against offenders where they have evidence. The street cleaning team will remove or paint over any offensive graffiti in public places. They aim to remove offensive graffiti within 24 hours of it being reported to them. They are also responsible for removing graffiti on council property. If you are in a resident or community group, the council have a community clean-up scheme which could give you supplies to paint over graffiti in your local area.

24-hour concessionary travel was introduced temporarily for holders of an older person’s bus pass was introduced during the height of lockdown restrictions to help older people travel earlier in the day when many supermarkets were offering dedicated early morning shopping slots due to shortages. Reverting the hours is designed to reduce the number of older and younger age groups mixing in the busy morning commute time. Those with an older person’s bus pass can still travel on city buses between 9am and 4am on weekdays and all day on weekends and bank holidays. The 24-hour travel allowance remains for Brighton & Hove disabled person’s pass holders.

Brighton Dome is amongst hundreds of theatres and arts venues across the country currently closed for live events due to the coronavirus pandemic. Following its closure and the cancellation of Brighton Festival 2020, the organisation lost 67% of its self-generated income. The 1,800 capacity Concert Hall is only able to consider vastly reduced attendances of socially distanced performances and the Corn Exchange and Studio Theatres are undergoing major refurbishment until autumn 2021.
Café Domenica at Brighton Dome Brighton Dome has reopened its doors for the first time since lockdown in a special partnership with social enterprise charity Team Domenica. Café Domenica at Brighton Dome is based in the venue’s foyer on Church Street, offering a selection of freshly made food and drinks. Team Domenica offers work-based training for people with learning disabilities. Due to social distancing measures, their two Brighton & Hove locations have had to reduce their opening hours and needed an additional site to continue their work.
The registered arts charity is now asking the community to raise £25,000 for the BringBackBrightonDome appeal which will help towards the additional £250,000 it needs to raise in the next year. Supporters can choose a range of ‘rewards’ for different levels of donations.
Café Domenica at Brighton Dome is open from Tuesday to Friday, 9am to 4pm.

47 Hove news…
Eighteen storey development for Ellen Street The council’s planning committee, meeting on 2nd September, granted permission for a new development to be built in Ellen Street in Central Hove, to the south of the Conway Street bus garage.
There was already an existing approved scheme for a development of 4 to 17 storeys, creating 186 apartments plus office and retail space. That scheme was rejected by the Planning Committee as it didn’t provide sufficient affordable housing, but was allowed on appeal in January 2019. The new scheme, known as “Hove Gardens”, is for buildings of 2 to 18 storeys, providing 216 build-to-rent studios and flats, as well as commercial and community floorspace. A report to the planning committee recommended the scheme for approval. It said: “The need to provide housing in light of Brighton and Hove’s difficulty to meet its 5 year housing supply and the improvements to the public realm are considered to outweigh the harm to heritage assets.” The scheme was supported by the Goldsmid ward councillors, as well as the Hove Station Neighbourhood Forum, although the council’s Heritage team and the Conservation Advisory Group both objected. The Conservation Advisory Group said: “The buildings are of poor design and appear slab like and monolithic.”
GENERAL
The site is currently occupied by single-storey industrial sheds and is immediately to the west of the Hove Station Conservation Area.
During the committee debate, Cllr Chris Henry said that there had been really good public consultation on the scheme and he would be supporting it. He commented: “For those of us who live and work around this area it is a dump, it’s a very unpleasant area and this regeneration project is really welcome.” Other members were also supportive of the plans. However, Cllr Nick Childs was concerned that the amount of affordable housing was insufficient and said the development didn’t meet the needs of the city. Cllr Carol Theobald thought the scheme was too dense and too high, and Cllr Tony Janio said that a car-free scheme for 216 units was “complete and utter nonsense”. Cllr Bridget Fishleigh said that there was a projected £8 million profit for the development, so it should be rejected if it couldn’t deliver more than 10% affordable housing. The committee voted 6 to 4 in favour of the scheme.

49 News from the council…
Consultation on school admission numbers... Brighton & Hove City Council is to consult on a plan to reduce the total number of school places across the city for the academic year starting in September 2022.
There are concerns that a potentially large surplus in school places in years to come could lead to some schools facing financial problems. The proposals, which have been developed through a cross-party working group, aim to reduce the total number of school places in the city by 360 in order to help manage this. The Children, Young People and Skills committee agreed on 14th September to a public consultation on proposals to reduce the Published Admission Numbers (PAN) of nine schools in the city. They are: • Balfour Primary School from 120 to 90 pupils • Benfield Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils • Brunswick Primary School from 120 to 90 pupils • Downs Infant School from 120 to 90 pupils • Goldstone Primary School from 90 to 60 pupils • Moulsecoomb Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils • Stanford Infant School from 90 to 60 pupils • West Blatchington Primary School from 60 to 30 pupils • Hove Park School and Sixth Form from 300 to 180 pupils.
GENERAL
The Government advises councils to have between 5-10% surplus places in total to allow it to take account of parental preference and fluctuations in pupil numbers. But for September 2022 the current predictions are for around 19% surplus places city-wide. The figures for September 2023 are even higher.
Committee chair Councillor Hannah Clare said: “Our priority is to ensure that families have a wide choice of schools – and ensuring that through managing the large number of spare places we have, we keep all schools in the city open. We want to be able to offer families school places within a reasonable distance of their home. Sadly, having too many school places puts our schools at financial risk.” Decisions about school numbers for September 2022 need to be agreed by the end of February 2021. Consultation on the proposals will run from 5 October to 27 November. The committee will then consider the results of the consultation and make decisions early in the new year. The consultation will be available on the council’s consultation portal at https://consultations.brighton-hove.gov.uk/

53 News from the council…
Royal Pavilion & Museums awarded lifeline Between April and June, Royal Pavilion & Museums lost £1.3m through closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic – a heavy blow as nearly 70% of the running costs are covered by earned income from ticket sales, retail, programmes, and events. Welcoming visitors back Royal Pavilion & Museums will use the money to support making the necessary changes and adjustments to cope with Covid-19, such as implementing new Covid safety measures across the Royal Pavilion & Museums sites to assist with their phased reopening and expanding the digital and online experience for visitors. The money will also go towards marketing to attract more UK visitors, as well as supplying PPE to keep staff and visitors safe. It was vital to secure funding as Royal Pavilion & Museums is reliant on income from admissions, retail and location hire to support and maintain the Grade I and II listed historic buildings, the collections of millions of objects, art works and cultural and community activities. Without this emergency support the service and its collections and the historic buildings, which need constant maintenance, would have been at risk. Throughout the lockdown, staff have been working with Public Health England, Brighton & Hove City Council, the Royal Pavilion & Museums Trust and unions to follow government guidelines and ensure the buildings and work environments are safe for both visitors and staff.
GENERAL
The Royal Pavilion has received a welcome boost through a National Lottery Heritage Emergency Fund grant of £235,000.
